Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam, have made remarkable progress in terms of economic development over the past decades. Yet, rural areas in these countries lag behind. This dissertation studies households in such rural areas in Thailand and Vietnam. It sheds light on (i) the influence of local shocks on individual well-being, (ii) household debt behaviour and expectations towards future income, and (iii) the role of non-cognitive skills on individual labour market outcomes. Hence, it provides rich insights into the factors influencing household perceptions and decision making behaviour as well as the importance of non-cognitive skills in rural areas of Southeast Asia. The first chapter of this dissertation provides information on the study background, the data and presents an overview of each Chapter. The remainder of the dissertation consists of four essays stretching out over the next Chapters. Chapter 2 analyses the impact of witnessing nearby flood events on a person's individual subjective well-being. While previous studies and a negative effect of directly experienced environmental shocks, this Chapter shows that observing such events also has detrimental consequences for individual well-being. We hereby compare individuals that self-reported a direct flood shock with those who did not. Additionally, it demonstrates that observing traumatic events not only impact current evaluations of subjective well-being but translate into negative future well-being expectations. Chapter 3 studies the relation between high income expectations and over-indebtedness. Extensive survey data on households´ borrowing behavior and future income expectations were collected for this study. Using indicators of objective and subjective over indebtedness, a strong positive relation between high income expectations and household over-indebtedness can be shown. An additional lab-in-the-field experiment reveals that over-confidence is related to over-borrowing. The last two Chapters (Chapter 4 and 5) focus on the importance of non-cognitive skills for individual labour market outcomes in a rural labour market setting. Measures of non-cognitive skills are validated in Chapter 4, studying one of the most commonly used models capturing a person's personality, the Big Five Factor model. The results reveal a five factor structure similar to that found in samples from industrialised countries. In a next step, Chapter 5 analyses the importance of non-cognitive skills for individual occupational attainment and earnings. The findings show that non-cognitive skills are important determinants for labour market outcomes in rural labour markets. A high level of responsibility and efficiency are important characteristics with respect to occupational attainment and emotional stability is associated with higher earnings. Longer life expectancy and low fertility rates increase the share of elderly among the population of most industrialized countries. This demographic change affects the economy and the society and is most likely to proceed in the future. Therefore, policy makers and families need to be aware of the implications associated with an aging population. One particularly great challenge comes with the rising number of fragile elderly people, for which most countries are currently unable to provide sufficient care solutions. Germany, for instance, is facing a constantly rising share of people in need that mostly receive informal care from friends and family. Public support promotes these informal care arrangements (§3 SGB XI) and endorses care receivers to remain in their domestic environment. Even though such informal care arrangements are preferred by most families, caregiving can have a large impact on the caregiver’s life. Policy makers need to measure and incorporate these outcomes in order to provide suitable aid for caring families and, thereby, ensuring sustainable and dignified population aging. This dissertation consists of three academic papers and contributes to the topic in several ways: the first paper reviews the recent literature on the effects of informal caregiving on the caregiver and, thereby, assesses the opportunity costs associated with informal care provision. Further, we evaluated the methodology that is commonly used and identify certain risk groups as well as arrangements that are particularly burdensome. The second paper takes a specific look at the subjective well-being of caregivers in Germany and analyzes effects associated with providing care. In contrast to most prior studies, the paper uses large population-based longitudinal data, accounts for unobserved heterogeneity, and estimates the relationship with different methodologies. The paper further values well-being losses monetarily, which allows a comparison to formal care alternatives. The third paper provides new insights on individual selection behavior in the market for supplemental health insurances. This is an increasingly popular way to insure against long-term care needs, a risk not fully covered despite a statutory long-term care insurance. Private insurance markets are fragile in the presences of asymmetric information and, therefore, might not be a sustainable solution to cover the increasing risks of an aging society. We developed an innovative approach to disentangle different selection behaviors in a heterogeneous sample and identify asymmetric information exemplarily for the market of supplemental dental insurance, despite no risk-coverage correlation for the aggregated sample. Eine längere Lebenserwartung und niedrige Geburtenraten erhöhen den Anteil an älteren Menschen in der Bevölkerung der meisten Industrieländer. Dieser demografische Wandel wird sich mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit in der Zukunft fortsetzen und hat sowohl Einfluss auf die Wirtschaft als auch auf die Gesellschaft. Daher müssen sich politische Entscheidungsträger und Familien bewusst sein, welche Auswirkungen eine alternde Bevölkerung mit sich bringt. Eine besonders große Herausforderung birgt die steigende Zahl von gebrechlichen, älteren Menschen, für die die meisten Länder gegenwärtig keine ausreichende Versorgung zur Verfügung stellen. Deutschland ist beispielsweise mit einem ständig steigenden Anteil von pflegebedürftigen Menschen konfrontiert, welche meist informelle Pflege von Freunden und Familie erhalten. Die öffentliche Unterstützung fördert diese informelle Pflegearrangements (§ 3 SGB XI) und unterstützt Pflegeempfänger, in ihrem häuslichen Umfeld zu bleiben. Auch wenn solche informelle Pflegearrangements meist von den Familien bevorzugt werden, kann die Pflegebelastung einen großen Einfluss auf das Leben der Pflegeperson haben. Die Politik muss diese Belastungen erfassen und bei Entscheidungen berücksichtigen, um geeignete Hilfe für pflegende Familien und damit einen nachhaltigen und würdevollen Alterungsprozess der Bevölkerung sicherzustellen. Diese Dissertation besteht aus drei wissenschaftlichen Papieren und trägt auf unterschiedliche Weise zum obigen Thema bei: Das erste Papier untersucht die neuere Literatur über die Auswirkungen der informellen Pflege auf die Pflegeperson und beurteilt dadurch die Opportunitätskosten, die mit dem Leisten von informeller Pflege verbunden sind. Weiter werden die angewandte Methodik analysiert und bestimmte Risikogruppen und Pflegearrangements identifiziert, die besonders belastend sind. Das zweite Papier betrachtet speziell das subjektive Wohlbefinden von Pflegekräften in Deutschland und analysiert die Auswirkungen von informeller Betreuung. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten früheren Studien verwendet das Papier einen großen bevölkerungsrepräsentativen Längsschnittdatensatz, berücksichtigt unbeobachtete Heterogenität und schätzt den Zusammenhang mit verschiedenen Methoden. Weiter bewertet das Papier die Verluste in Lebenszufriedenheit monetär, was einen Vergleich mit formellen Pflegealternativen ermöglicht. Das dritte Papier liefert neue Erkenntnisse über das individuelle Selektionsverhalten auf dem Markt für Krankenzusatzversicherungen. Diese sind eine zunehmend beliebte Möglichkeit, um sich für den Pflegefall abzusichern; ein Risiko, das trotz einer gesetzlichen Pflegeversicherung nicht vollständig abgedeckt ist. Existieren jedoch asymmetrische Informationen, können private Versicherungsmärkte instabil werden und bieten somit keine nachhaltige Lösung, um die steigenden Risiken einer alternden Gesellschaft abzusichern. In diesem Papier wird ein innovativer Ansatz entwickelt, der die verschiedenen Verhaltensweisen bei der Selektion in einer heterogenen Stichprobe separiert. Somit kann, exemplarisch für den Markt der Zahnzusatzversicherung, die Existenz von asymmetrischen Informationen nachweisen werden, obwohl sich in der Gesamtstichprobe keine Korrelation zwischen Risiko und Versicherungsdeckung zeigen lässt.

This dissertation studies the economics of well-being using modern microeconometric techniques and focuses on two specific domains, health and life satisfaction. The thesis first frames the analysis by discussing relevant issues in conceptualising and measuring well-being and by outlining the key concepts in microeconometric evaluation methods used in the analysis. Three self-contained chapters represent the main body of this dissertation. The first study examines the causal effect of family income on child health in the UK using an instrumental variables strategy. We find that income has a very small but significant causal effect on subjective child health and no significant effect on chronic health conditions, apart from respiratory illnesses. We examine the role of potential transmission mechanisms and show that the timing of income does not matter for young children. Moreover, our results provide further evidence that maternal health does not drive a spurious relationship between family income and child health. The policy implication of our study is that financial transfers are unlikely to deliver substantial improvements in child health. The second study investigates the causal effect of smoking bans on self-assessed health in Germany. Using a difference-in-difference design, we find that non-smokers benefit strongly, particularly young non-smokers, and that smokers report no or even negative short-run effects following the introduction of smoking bans. We demonstrate that health improvements for non-smokers materialise largely with the enactment of smoking bans. Our study supports the policy recommendation of introducing smoking bans as a means of improving public health and shows that norm activation may induce compliance with smoking bans even in the absence of formal sanctions. The final study applies the life satisfaction approach to evaluate the welfare effects of the transition in and out of daylight savings time (DST) for both the UK and Germany. Using a regression discontinuity design, we demonstrate that the transition to DST reduces life satisfaction in the first week after the transition for both Germany and the UK. Consistent with economic theory on the shadow price of time, these effects are mainly driven by families with young children in the household. The costs and benefits of the transition back to standard time in autumn seem to offset each other. Our findings suggest that public policy could help time-constrained individuals to adjust more easily by providing them with more flexibility to reallocate their time.

Theory suggests that subjective well-being is affected by income comparisons and adaptation to income. Empirical tests of the effects often rely on self-constructed measures from survey data. This paper shows that results can be highly sensitive to simple parameter changes. Using large-scale panel data from Germany and the UK, I report cases where plausible variations in the underlying income type substantially affect tests of the relationship between life satisfaction, income rank, reference income, and income adaptation. Models simultaneously controlling for income and income rank as well as models with a number of income lags are prone to imperfect multicollinearity with consequences for the precision and robustness of estimates. When testing relative-income effects, researchers should be aware that reference income constructed as average of a rather arbitrarily defined reference group and reference income predicted from Mincer-type earnings equations are two approaches that can produce inconsistent results, and that are probably not as reliable and valid as previously assumed. The analysis underlines the importance of robustness checks and regression diagnostics, two routines that are often not carried out diligently in empirical research. Der Theorie nach wird subjektives Wohlbefinden von Einkommensvergleichen und Einkommensanpassungseffekten beeinflusst. Empirische Tests dieser Effekte verwenden oft selbstkonstruierte Messgrößen aus Umfragedaten. Dieser Artikel zeigt, dass Ergebnisse sehr sensitiv gegenüber einfachen Parameterveränderungen sein können. Unter Verwendung großer Paneldatensätze aus Deutschland und Großbritannien zeige ich Fälle, in denen plausible Veränderungen der zugrundeliegenden Einkommensart substantiellen Einfluss auf Tests des Zusammenhangs zwischen Lebenszufriedenheit, Einkommensrang, Referenzeinkommen und Einkommensanpassung haben. Modelle die simultan für Einkommen und Einkommensrang kontrollieren sowie Modelle mit einigen Lags der Einkommensvariable sind anfällig für imperfekte Multikollinearität mit entsprechenden Konsequenzen für Präzision und Robustheit der Schätzer. Forscher sollten bei Tests von relativen Einkommenseffekten darauf achten, dass Referenzeinkommen konstruiert als Durchschnitt einer recht willkürlich definierten Referenzgruppe sowie Referenzeinkommen, das mit einer Lohngleichung des Mincer-Typs prognostiziert wird, zwei Ansätze sind, die inkonsistente Ergebnisse liefern können und daher möglicherweise nicht so verlässlich und valide sind, wie bislang angenommen. Die Analyse unterstreicht die Bedeutung von Robustheitschecks und Regressionsdiagnostik - zwei Routineprozesse, die in empirischen Studien oft nicht gründlich durchgeführt werden.

Recent studies focused on testing the Easterlin hypothesis (happiness and national income correlate in the cross-section but not over time) on a global level. We make a case for testing the Easterlin hypothesis at the country level where individual panel data allow exploiting important methodological advantages. Novelties of our test of the Easterlin hypothesis are a) long-term panel data and estimation with individual fixed effects, b) regional GDP per capita with a higher variation than national figures, c) accounting for potentially biased clustered standard errors when the number of clusters is small. Using long-term panel data for Germany and the United Kingdom, we do not find robust evidence for a relationship between GDP per capita and life satisfaction in either country (controlling for a variety of variables). Together with the evidence from previous research, we now count three countries for which Easterlin's happiness-income hypothesis cannot be rejected: the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Die neuere Forschung hat sich darauf konzentriert die Easterlin-Hypothese (Wohlbefinden und Volkseinkommen korrelieren im Querschnitt, aber nicht in der Zeitreihe) auf globaler Ebene zu testen. Unser Artikel liefert Argumente für das Testen der Easterlin-Hypothese auf nationaler Ebene, wo individuelle Paneldaten das Ausschöpfen wichtiger methodologischer Vorteile ermöglichen. Wir erweitern die bisherige Literatur zur Easterlin-Hypothese durch a) Schätzungen mit individuellen fixen Effekten anhand von längerfristigen Paneldaten, b) Verwendung von regionalem BIP pro Kopf mit einer höheren Varianz als nationale BIP-Daten und c) Berücksichtigung von potentiell verzerrten Cluster-Standardfehlern im Fall von wenigen Clustern. Wir verwenden längerfristige Paneldaten für Deutschland und Großbritannien und finden keine robuste Evidenz für einen Zusammenhang zwischen BIP pro Kopf und Lebenszufriedenheit in den beiden Ländern (unter Verwendung von einer Reihe von Kontrollvariablen). Zusammen mit früheren Forschungsergebnissen zählen wir drei Länder in denen die Easterlin-Hypothese nicht verworfen werden kann: die Vereinigten Staaten, Deutschland und Großbritannien.

Umwelt- und Wirtschaftspolitik, so schien es Jahrzehnte lang, stehen im Widerspruch. Was hilft der gesunde Wald, wenn Millionen keine Arbeit haben? Zwar gehen mit Arbeitslosigkeit seit Einführung der sozialen Sicherungssysteme nicht länger Not, Leid und Elend einher. Aber das Stigma bedrückt die Betroffenen und ist für die Gesellschaft eine Last. Und so ist die Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen das Kernziel aller Politik. Allzu oft werden dabei allerdings die Interessen der zukünftigen Generationen vernachlässigt. Neue Straßen und Flughäfen oder deren Ausbau wie auch Gewerbeparks im Grünen werden mit dem Arbeitsplatzargument legitimiert. Dabei gibt es zur Bekämpfung von Arbeitslosigkeit ein sozial und ökologisch wesentlich verträglicheres Konzept: die gerechtere Verteilung der zur Verfügung stehenden Erwerbsarbeitszeit. Die Arbeitslosigkeit ließe sich zumindest rechnerisch abschaffen, wenn die Menschen im Schnitt 30 Stunden in der Woche für Lohn arbeiteten. Dieser als Kurze Vollzeit für alle bezeichnete Ansatz ist so plausibel, dass man sich über die dürftige Resonanz in Politik und Gesellschaft wundert. Das Impulspapier stellt Zusammenhänge von Wachstum, Arbeitsplätze, Glück und Nachhaltigkeit her. Environmental and economic policy seemed to have been in conflict for decades. But what use is a healthy forest when millions of people are without work? Even if unemployment - since the introduction of social security systems - does no longer necessarily lead to misery, distress and suffering, the stigma has a depressing effect on the concerned person and becomes a burden for society. Consequently creating jobs is the core objective of all kind of policy. The interests of future generations however are often neglected in this context. Construction or extension of streets and airports or for example industrial parks in the country are advocated with the argument of new employment. At the same time a socially and ecologically much more appropriate concept exists: The fairer distribution of paid work. In purely mathematical terms unemployment could be suppressed by an average of 30 paid working hours per week. Given the plausibility of this approach called Short fulltime for everyone the weak response in politics and society is surprising.

Wie glücklich sind Migranten der ersten Generation in Deutschland heute? Wie beeinflussen formelle oder informelle Diskriminierungen ihre Lebenszufriedenheit? Welchen Einfluss haben materielle und immaterielle Ressourcen? Welche Vergleichsmaßstäbe ziehen sie zur Beurteilung ihres Glücks heran? Und wie verändert sich die Beurteilung des subjektiven Wohlbefindens (SWB) im Zeitverlauf? Wir nutzen Längsschnittdaten des Sozioökonomischen Panels und ein Mehrebenen-Verfahren, um diese Fragen statistisch zu beantworten. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Lebenszufriedenheit der Zugewanderten zwischen 1984 und 2008 stetig gesunken ist. Diskriminierungen sind eine Determinante. Einen größeren Einfluss haben jedoch der Besitz und die Verteilung von Ressourcen - wie bei der einheimischen Bevölkerung auch. Für die Beurteilung ihrer Lebenszufriedenheit ziehen Migranten verschiedene soziale und zeitliche Vergleichsmaßstäbe heran. Das Haushaltseinkommen wird in der Regel mit der deutschen Bevölkerung verglichen. Für soziale und gesundheitliche Ressourcen spielen hingegen ethnisch-nationale Referenzgruppen eine größere Rolle. Wichtigster Referenzpunkt ist jedoch die eigene Vergangenheit. Mit dem Wechsel der Staatsangehörigkeit verliert dieser Vergleichspunkt allerdings drastisch an Bedeutung. How happy are first-generation immigrants in Germany today? How do patterns of formal or informal discrimination affect their subjective life satisfaction? What is the effect of material and immaterial resources? What are the relevant standards for the evaluation of happiness? And how does the level of subjective well-being change over time? To answer these questions,we use longitudinal data of the German Socio-Economic Panel and a multilevel approach. Our findings show that the subjective well-being of immigrants has declined continuously between 1984 and 2008. Social discrimination has a negative effect on subjective wellbeing. Yet, the major influence comes from the ownership and control of resources - as in the domestic population. Immigrants use different social and temporal reference scales to evaluate their happiness. While household income is usually compared to local Germans, the ethnic community is the standard reference for evaluating social and health resources. The most important reference point, however, is the immigrant's individual past. Yet, the naturalization of the immigrant greatly reduces the significance of this reference.
