Selective exposure to online health information can be ascribed to two related defense motives: the motivation to confirm one’s subjective perceptions and the motivation to protect relevant parts of the self-image, such as physical integrity. Our aim was to identify how these motives come into effect in the context of a health threat (fictitious feedback on an alleged heart disease risk). In a preregistered online study with N = 763 participants, we analyzed the impact of perceived and suggested risk on the degree of bias in selecting risk-related information on a fictitious Google search results page. Applying a 2 × 2 design with the experimental factor “risk feedback” and the quasi-experimental factor “perceived risk,” we formulated six hypotheses. First, we expected a main effect of perceived risk on selective exposure to information suggesting no risk, and second, we hypothesized a main effect of perceived risk on mean quality rating of information suggesting a risk. Third, we proposed a main effect of risk feedback on selective exposure to information which suggests no risk, and fourth, we proposed a main effect of risk feedback on mean quality rating of information suggesting a risk. Fifth, we expected an interaction effect between perceived and suggested risk, and sixth, we proposed an interaction effect between perceived and suggested risk in different forms for each of the four conditions on quality ratings. Only the third hypothesis was confirmed: Receiving information which suggested a health risk increased the tendency to select information denying the risk. Additional exploratory analyses revealed moderator effects of health information literacy and participant age on the aforementioned relationships. In sum, our results underline the crucial role of defense motives in the context of a suggested health threat.

The study examines how a regional university, having recently overseen a dramatic internationalization, deals with the consequences of COVID-19, and how the students - many of whom are international and coming from the global peripheries - experience the pandemic. The study is informed by the critical theory of late modernity and capitalism - especially the theory of uncertainty and risk (Beck, 1992; Beck, Giddens, & Lash 1994). It explores the power relations of the communicative dynamic between the administrators managing the crisis and the students perceiving and living it. It is an early-stage research report, published days after a pilot study was run. A survey among international students (including local, tuition-fee paying, and exchange students) was distributed to obtain initial responses. The analysis is complemented by insights based on close observation of the unfolding situation and analysis of the documents issued by the university. The findings explain the uncertainty experienced by international students, characteristic of many CE universities. The study covers the topics of attitudes towards epidemics, information imbalance, perception of security, and evaluation of the responses. The paper concludes with an urgent call to recently internationalized universities for a recognition of the complexity of students’ fears.

The article enriches the understanding of trust in news at a time when mass and interpersonal communication have merged in the digital sphere. We propose disentangling individual-level patterns of trust allocation (i.e., trust figurations) across journalistic media, social media, and peers to reflect the multiplicity among modern news audiences. A latent class analysis of a representative survey among German young adults revealed four figurations: traditionalists, indifferentials, optimists, and cynics. Political characteristics and education corresponded with substantial heterogeneity in individuals’ trust in news sources, their inclination to differentiate between sources, and the ways of integrating trust in journalistic and non-journalistic sources.

Die vorliegende Arbeit unternimmt es, anhand des jüdischen Symbols des Eruvs Grenzziehungen und Raumansprüche in urbanen Umgebungen unter dem Gesichtspunkt interkultureller und interreligiöser Kommunikation und deren Scheitern zu analysieren. Sie widmet sich der Frage, wie sich durch unterschiedliche Machtansprüche in diesen Umgebungen Konflikte bilden und wie diese sich kommunikativ lösen lassen. Zum Verständnis heutiger komplexer ethnischer, ökonomischer, religiöser und sozialer Raumkonstellationen bedient sie sich der Konzepte globalisierter ethno- und ideoscapes, wie sie Arjun Appadurai für interkulturelle Räume vorgeschlagen hat. Für die kommunikationswissenschaftliche Analyse der erwähnten interkulturellen Konflikte bedient die Untersuchung sich der Unterscheidung zwischen interkulturellem und kulturspezifischem Vokabular in ähnlicher Weise, wie Richard Rottenburg Metacode und Kulturcode voneinander abgrenzt, um interkulturelle Aushandlungsprozesse auf der diskursiven Ebene zu beschreiben und entsprechende Lösungsvorschläge machen zu können. Aus der daraus hervorgehenden Verbindung neuerer Raumkonzepte und Vermittlungscodes wird ein Ansatz interkultureller Konfliktlösung in wandelbaren urbanen Szenarien vorgestellt. Using the Jewish symbol of the Eruv as an example, the present work undertakes to analyze border demarcations and spatial claims in urban environments from the point of view of intercultural and interreligious communication and their failure. It is devoted to the question of how conflicts are formed through different claims to power in these environments and how they can be resolved communicatively. To understand today’s complex ethnic, economic, religious and social constellations in urban spaces, the study uses the concepts of globalized ethno- and ideoscapes as proposed by Arjun Appadurai for intercultural spaces. To analyze intercultural conflicts within these scapes it makes use of the distinction between intercultural and culture-specific vocabulary in a similar way Richard Rottenburg distinguishes between metacode and cultural code in order to describe intercultural negotiation processes on the discursive level and to propose appropriate solutions. From the resulting combination of newer spatial concepts and mediating codes, an approach of intercultural conflict resolution in changeable urban scenarios is presented.

Against the background of increasing divisions in society, this article proposes that a fresh approach is required if we are to bridge across currently entrenched cultural groups. The approach proposed here takes on a relational perspective in which the focus is shifted towards the basic human motives that are at play in any given situation. A non-binary stance is expounded, in which we both accept the validity of the other’s point of view as well as respecting our own commitments and boundaries. If this balancing act is accompanied by relevant skills from the areas of self-competence, social-competence and strategic competence (Bolten 2020, p.63), and in particular mindful awareness, then we will have the greatest chance of establishing collaborative communication channels across cultural groups and moving towards sustainable relationships. Angesichts zunehmender Spaltungen in der Gesellschaft wird der Einsatz einer angemessenen kollaborativen Kommunikation zwischen den verschiedenen kulturellen, voneinander distanzierten Gruppen noch dringlicher. Dafür schlägt dieser Artikel einen neuen Ansatz vor. Er geht von einer relationalen Perspektive aus, bei der der Schwerpunkt auf die grundlegenden menschlichen Motive verlagert wird, die in der jeweiligen Situati- on aktiviert werden. Es wird eine ausbalancierte, nicht-binäre Haltung dargelegt, die sowohl die Gültigkeit des Standpunkts des anderen akzeptiert als auch die eigenen Ver- pflichtungen und Grenzen respektiert. Wenn dieser Balanceakt von relevanten Fähigkei- ten aus den Bereichen der Selbst-, Sozial- und Strategischen Kompetenz (Bolten 2020, p.63) sowie insbesondere von der Achtsamkeit begleitet wird, dann können kollaborati- ve Kommunikationspraktiken und somit nachhaltige Beziehungen entstehen.

Wenn sich Kommunikation immer in einem bestimmten Setting und Rahmen ereignet, dann gilt dies zweifelsohne auch für die Wissenskommunikation, die heute immer mehr im Kontext netzwerkförmiger Strukturen stattfindet und durch die beteiligten Akteure und ihre kulturellen Mehrfachzugehörigkeiten mitgestaltet wird. Ein zentrales Ziel von Wissenskommunikation ist es, vorhandene Expertisen transparent werden zu lassen, Austauschprozesse von Erfahrungswissen unter den beteiligten Netzwerkakteuren zu ermöglichen und vorhandenes Wissen weiterzuentwickeln. Die Konzeption ist maßgeblich davon beeinflusst, wie das Konstrukt Wissenskommunikation im jeweiligen Kontext definiert wird und welche Methoden eingesetzt werden, um gemeinsames Wissen entstehen zu lassen, das im Anschluss für alle Beteiligten einen Mehrwert bieten kann. Der Artikel geht von der Annahme aus, dass die Wissenskommunikation verbessert werden kann, wenn die damit verbundenen Kommunikationsprozesse und zugrunde liegenden Beziehungen stärker berücksichtigt und reflektiert werden. Eine in diesem Sinne verstandene relational orientierte Wissenskommunikation kann einen wesentlichen Beitrag leisten, um ein „sustainable glocal relationship building“ (Bolten 2020a:101) auch für den Bereich der Personal- und Organisationsentwicklung voranzubringen. Abschließend werden relevante Perspektiven skizziert, die erste Anregungen diesbezüglich enthalten. Dazu zählen die Sensibilisierung für Heterogenität und Akzeptanz von Erfahrungsvielfalt, das Bewusstwerden der eigenen Haltung und persönlichen Einstellungen, eine Sensibilisierung für unterschiedliche Praktiken kommunikativer Interaktionen, eine Orientierung an strukturprozessualen Perspektiven und Prinzipien der Selbstorganisation. If communication always takes place in a specific setting and framework, then this undoubtedly also applies to knowledge communication, which today increasingly happens in the context of network-like structures and is shaped by the actors involved and their multiple cultural affiliations. A central goal of knowledge communication is therefore to make existing expertise transparent, to enable exchange processes of experiential knowl- edge among the network actors involved, and to further develop existing knowledge. The conception is in turn decisively influenced by how the construct of knowledge commu- nication is defined in the respective context, and which methods are used to create shared knowledge that can subsequently offer added value for all participants.

In ihrem Essay fragt die israelische Autorin Lilah Nethanel nach der Bedeutung von Mehrsprachigkeit und Transnationalität für die hebräisch-europäische Schreibkultur im frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Hierzu beleuchtet sie Leben und Werk des hebräischen und jiddischen Schriftstellers Zalman Schneur (1887-1959). Anhand bisher unbekannter persönlicher Korrespondenzen zeichnet Nethanel den Weg von der veröffentlichten Fiktion zurück zu den biografischen Hintergründen des Autors nach, die von so existenziellen Erfahrungen wie Krieg und Flucht, Emigration und Einsamkeit geprägt sind. Diese Dokumente, die erst mehr als fünf Jahrzehnte nach Schneurs Tod in Madrid entdeckt wurden, machen die moderne jüdische Schreibkultur in ihrer gesamten Komplexität sichtbar: Auf Deutsch, Französisch und Jiddisch verfasst, wurden die Briefe aus dem nachrevolutionären Russland, dem Weimarer Berlin und dem Paris der 1940er Jahre verschickt. Sie legen das vielschichtige biografische Mosaik offen, das in Schneurs literarisches Werk eingeflossen ist, und bieten neue Perspektiven für das Verständnis moderner jüdischer Schriften in Europa.

Sexual and/or gender minority populations (LGBQ/T) have particular cancer risks, lower involvement in cancer screening, and experience barriers in communication with healthcare providers. All of these factors increase the probability of health decisions linked with poor outcomes that include higher levels of cancer mortality. Persistent discrimination against, and stigmatization of, LGBQ/T people is reflected in sparse medical curriculum addressing LGBQ/T communities. Marginalization makes LGBQ/T persons particularly reliant on knowledge derived from online networks and mainstream media sources. In what is likely the first nationally-funded and nation-wide study of LGBQ/T experiences of cancer, the Cancer’s Margins project (www.lgbtcancer.ca) conducted face-to-face interviews with 81 sexual and/or gender minority patients diagnosed and treated for breast and/or gynecological cancer in five Canadian provinces and the San Francisco Bay area (US). With specific attention to knowledge access, sharing, and mobilization, our objective was to document and analyze complex intersectional relationships between marginalization, gender and sexuality, and cancer health decision-making and care experiences. Findings indicate that cancer care knowledge in online environments is shaped by cisnormative and heteronormative narratives. Cancer knowledge and support environments need, by contrast, to be designed by taking into account intersectionally diverse models of minority identities and communities. In Gesundheitskrisen wie der COVID-19-Pandemie stellt die massenmediale Berichterstattung eine zentrale Informationsquelle dar. Sie wird dabei nicht nur individuell genutzt und verarbeitet, sondern auch gemeinsam rezipiert, im sozialen Umfeld besprochen oder in Sozialen Medien diskutiert. Wie sich die interpersonale Kommunikation über pandemiebezogene Berichterstattung gestaltet, ist jedoch selten beforscht worden. Der Beitrag widmet sich daher der Anschlusskommunikation zur Medienberichterstattung in der COVID-19-Pandemie. In einer qualitativen Interviewstudie mit 22 Teilnehmenden fragen wir nach (a) Kommunikationspartner:innen, (b) den kommunikativen Rollen innerhalb der Anschlusskommunikation, (c) den Funktionen der Anschlusskommunikation sowie (d) nach potentiellen Veränderungen im Zeitverlauf. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Anschlusskommunikation (a) insbesondere mit Familie und Freund:innen im direkten sozialen Umfeld stattfindet, aber auch zur Entstehung neuer Beziehungen beiträgt. Sie erfolgt (b) vor allem auf Augenhöhe, sodass die Rolle der Austauscher:innen dominiert, wobei manche Personen als Multiplikator:innen fungieren. Die Anschlusskommunikation erfüllt (c) die Funktion des Teilens und Erhaltens von Informationen, der Informationsvalidierung und gemeinsamen Wahrheitssuche sowie dem Coping mit negativen Emotionen. Veränderungen im Zeitverlauf (d) sind vor allem mit Blick auf das (Themen-)Interesse und die Kommunikationsrollen zu beobachten., In health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, mass media coverage is a key source of information. It is not only used and processed individually, but also used collectively, discussed within people’s personal social network, or on social media. However, how interpersonal communication about pandemic-related media coverage is shaped has rarely been researched. This chapter therefore addresses the follow-up communication about media coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a qualitative interview study with 22 participants, we ask about (a) the communication partners, (b) the communicative roles within the follow-up communication, (c) the functions of the follow-up communication, as well as (d) potential changes over time. The results show that follow-up communication (a) takes place especially with family and friends in the immediate social network, but also contributes to the formation of new relationships. It takes place (b) primarily at eye level, so that the role of the exchanger dominates, with some people acting as multipliers. The follow-up communication fulfills (c) the function of sharing and receiving information, information validation and joint truth-seeking, as well as coping with negative emotions. Ein Basiswissen ��ber Klimapolitik erm��glicht demokratische Teilhabe und Engagement f��r den Klimaschutz. Bestehende Studien zum Wissen der Deutschen konzentrieren sich jedoch entweder auf Folgen und Ursachen des Klimawandels oder auf andere Politikbereiche. Zudem gibt es wenig Forschung zu den Quellen und dem Prozess des Wissenserwerbs. Daher untersucht die vorliegende Studie, welchen Beitrag Mediennutzung und interpersonelle Kommunikation zum Wissenserwerb ��ber Klimapolitik leisten, und welche anderen Faktoren neben den Informationsquellen das Lernen beeinflussen und erkl��ren. Die Studie wurde im Kontext des UN-Klimagipfels 2015 in Paris durchgef��hrt und kombiniert eine dreiwellige Panel-Befragung der deutschen Bev��lkerung (N = 1121) mit einer qualitativen Tagebuchbefragung (N = 42) und einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse der genutzten Medieninhalte der TagebuchschreiberInnen. Es zeigt sich ein eher niedriger Wissensstand; mittelfristig gibt es einen Lerneffekt in Bezug auf besonders aktuelle Aspekte des Themas. In all planning processes, including those we label participatory, there are neglected parties. Even when co-produced decisions, equity objectives, or common initiatives are at hand, some actors are likely to be less listened to, or they are never even recognised, hence, ‘perfect’ participation does not exist. Nevertheless, participatory objectives continue to be an important resilience factor in attempts to make—and architectonically shape—new built environments, based as much in concerned parties’ wishes and knowledge of local circumstances, as in the repertoire of traditional professional solutions and political or profit-driven exploitation. This article makes a sample survey on land-use oriented planning and its capacity to include concerned parties, ranging from total neglect of residents to formalised government-steered participation and more spontaneous or insurgent community-driven attempts to communicate a wish. Two basic questions with ethical implications are here raised concerning how planning communication is grounded: Who is invited into dialogue, and what kind of flaws in the establishment of communicational links can be found? These questions are discussed here as examples of ethical dilemmas in planning concerning previously analysed cases in Sweden with an initial reflection also on known cases in India, Germany and Australia. Communicational mechanisms such as ‘dialogic reciprocity’ and ‘successive translational steps’ are especially discussed as areas of possible improvement in participatory practices.

This article explores the current ‘place’ of e-government in realizing public value in the context of what seems to be an emerging platform urbanism. It highlights a complex platform-based urban ecosystem encompassing private and public organisations and citizens. This ‘mainstreaming’ of e-government practices puts demands on cities and governments to reconsider their own role in ‘city making’ so as to achieve meaningful public oversight. The point of departure is the operationalization of this ‘place’ by conceptualizing participation and (multi-sided) platformisation as a framework to draw attention to the dynamic domain of e-governance where shifts can be seen in market structures, infrastructures, and changing forms of governance, and which may challenge the public interest. This is illustrated by an exploration of the social traffic and navigation application Waze.

Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist Thích Nhất Hạnh has been a leading figure in the promotion of nonviolent practice throughout the world. We examine his concept of engaged Buddhism, theories of nonviolence, and intersections with rhetorical and communication studies. His approach takes nonviolence beyond the realm of refusing to use physical violence to the recognition that language itself can be violent. In order to understand this approach we detail the concepts of interbeing, loving speech, and deep listening. We examine the role of love in Nhất Hạnh’s theory of nonviolence, comparing it with approaches taken by Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Examples are given from many of Nhất Hạnh’s speeches and writings with particular attention paid to a love letter he wrote to US President George W. Bush during the Iraq War. Thích Nhất Hạnh offers the practice of writing a love letter to one’s perceived enemy as a means to persuade for a turn to nonviolence.

Conflict has been a topic widely studied in communication and management studies literature. How groups handle conflict can affect group performance, satisfaction, and commitment (Martínez-Moreno, González-Navarro, Zornoza, & Ripoll, 2009; Pazos, 2012; Staples & Webster, 2007; Workman, 2007). Much of this literature focuses on online, task-oriented work groups, and how these groups differ from face-to-face (F2F) groups. However, hybrid groups (i.e., those that work both F2F and online) are increasingly common. To better understand conflict in hybrid groups, we review 68 articles regarding online, hybrid, and F2F groups that highlight the differences between F2F and online groups and consider what these differences mean for hybrid groups. In doing so, we identify several emergent themes related to how conflict is managed in online and hybrid groups. The literature suggests that there are many benefits to online and hybrid groups, such as the ability to assemble more diverse teams and work asynchronously, but that conflict is also more common in online than F2F groups. Strong norms and leadership behaviors that encourage trust and cohesion appear to reduce conflict and its effects on group performance and decision making, especially in online groups. These findings suggest that in hybrid groups, F2F meetings might be used to quickly establish group norms, trust, and cohesion, which can then improve online group interactions. However, more research is needed to understand how conflict occurs and is managed in hybrid groups. Future communication research should focus on examining conflict management in hybrid groups using computer-mediated communication perspectives.

The study discusses the role of dialogue communication in the interaction of the state, business, and civil society. The results are aimed at creating favorable conditions for the development of a business climate not only for a single region but also for the entire Russian economy. The study uses methods of system analysis, a sociological expert survey, an in-depth interview, methods for analyzing statistical data, which together revealed the substantive essence of communication barriers in the space of dialogue between the authorities, business and the public. The results of studies are aimed at identifying the role of dialogue communication in the interaction of the state, business, and civil society as an essential element of the socio-economic development of the country’s business climate. The research results can be used in practical activities of the authorities to improve the effectiveness of dialogue between the authorities, business structures and civil society in the context of the socio- economic development.

Die Corona-Pandemie stellt eine Phase der Unsicherheit dar und geht mit Handlungs- und Entscheidungsbedarfen einher, für deren Bewältigung das individuelle Kommunikations- und Informationshandeln eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Dabei ziehen Rezipient*innen situationsbedingt bestimmte Quellen anderen vor und legen beispielsweise unter bestimmten Bedingungen mehr Wert auf interpersonalen Austausch anstelle von medialer Suche. Das Ziel des vorliegenden Beitrags liegt darin, verschiedene Typen des interpersonalen und medialen Kommunikations- und Informationshandelns mit Bezug zur Corona-Pandemie zu identifizieren und ihre Spezifika herauszuarbeiten. Auf Basis 21 leitfadengestützter Interviews, die mittels einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet wurden, konnten je sechs inhaltsbezogene und zwei strategiebezogene Typen des interpersonalen sowie des medialen Kommunikations- und Informationshandelns identifiziert werden. Bei den interpersonalen Typen liegt der Fokus auf Emotionsbewältigung, auf Erfahrungs- oder Informationsaustausch. Sie zeichnen sich durch unterschiedliche Offenheit gegenüber dem Thema aus, während die medialen Typen von konkreten Interessensfeldern und sowohl durch Strategien der aktiven, gezielten Suche als auch der passiven Form des Scanning gekennzeichnet sind. Mit Blick auf die vorliegenden Erkenntnisse zeigt sich für die frühe Phase der Pandemie ein hohes Informationsbedürfnis und eine umfassende, auch selektive und kritische Rezeption medialer Inhalte und eine durch emotionale und informationelle Unterstützung geprägte Art des persönlichen Austauschs im sozialen Umfeld., The corona pandemic is a phase of uncertainty that is accompanied by the need for action and decision-making. To cope with uncertainties and prepare for decision-making interpersonal communication and information-seeking behavior play an important role. Depending on situational factors, individuals prefer certain sources to others and, for example, place more weight on interpersonal exchange instead of seeking information using media channels. This paper aims to identify different types of interpersonal communication and media information seeking about the Corona pandemic. Based on 21 semi-structured interviews, which were analyzed by qualitative content analysis, six content-related and two strategy-related types of interpersonal communication and information-seeking behavior using media channels were identified. The focus of the identified types of interpersonal communication was on coping with emotions and on exchanging experiences or information as types of social support and was further characterized by different degrees of openness to the topic. In contrast, the types of information-seeking behaviors using media channels were characterized by concrete fields of interest and by strategies of both active, targeted seeking, and passive forms of scanning. The findings illustrate that the early phase of the pandemic revealed a high need for information and a comprehensive, also selective, and critical reception of media content, whereas interpersonal communication was characterized by emotional and informational support., Risiken und Potenziale in der Gesundheitskommunikation: Beiträge zur Jahrestagung der DGPuK-Fachgruppe Gesundheitskommunikation 2020

The article discusses the problem of identifying a global intercultural discourse of communication participants, characterizes its parameters, and reviews strategies for its actualization. The purpose of the article is to build and justify a model of this discourse. The methods used in work include discourse analysis, modeling method (contrastive and comparative) analysis, transactional analysis, textual information analysis method, critical analysis, etc. Scientific results of the research: parameters of the global intercultural discourse are refined, its intercultural model is built, and discourses of the participants of intercultural communication are analyzed. The theoretical significance of the research lies in the development of a sample of global intercultural discourse that input in the theory of global discourse. The practical value of the work is that research results can be used both in the practice of intercultural communication and in the process of preparing monographs, textbooks, and training in the field of intercultural communication.

Prosoziales Handeln ist eine Grundvoraussetzung für den Zusammenhalt in demokratisch verfassten Gesellschaften und eng mit Kommunikation verknüpft. So werden beispielsweise emotionale und informationelle Unterstützung über wechselseitige Gespräche verwirklicht, aber auch andere prosoziale Handlungen häufig zusätzlich verbalisiert. Medial vermittelte Kommunikationsmodi erweitern die Anzahl möglicher Interaktionspartner und damit die prosozialen Handlungsmöglichkeiten. Der Beitrag widmet sich der Frage, wie prosoziales Handeln im Zusammenhang mit Kommunikation in den Alltag der Menschen integriert ist: Welche Arten prosozialen Handelns lassen sich beobachten, welche Kommunikationsmodi werden dafür genutzt und in welcher Relation stehen diese beiden Aspekte? Emotional and informational support, for example, are realized within reciprocal conversations, instrumental support may be accompanied by additional verbalization. Mediated communication modes amplify the amount of possible interaction partners and therefore the possibilities to behave prosocially. This study addresses the question of how prosocial behavior in relation to communicative behavior is integrated in people’s everyday life: Which types of prosocial behavior can be observed, which communication modes are used for this purpose and how are these two aspects related? Results of a partly standardized diary study with 57 participants show that the bigger part of prosocial behavior was realized face-to-face, while a number of mediated communication modes was used as well to exchange emotional, informational and instrumental support. Upon arrival to Europe, young adult gay migrants are found grappling with sexual norms, language demands, cultural ex- pectations, values and beliefs that may differ from their country of origin. Parallel processes of coming-out, coming-of-age and migration are increasingly digitally mediated. Young adult gay migrants are “connected migrants”, using smartphones and social media to maintain bonding ties with contacts in their home country while establishing new bridging relation- ships with peers in their country of arrival (Diminescu, 2008). Drawing on the feminist perspective of intersectionality, socio-cultural categories like age, race, nationality, migration status, and gender and sexuality have an impact upon iden- tification and subordination, thus we contend it is problematic to homogenize these experiences to all young adult gay migrants. The realities of settlement and integration starkly differ between those living on the margins of Europe—forced migrants including non-normative racialized young gay men—and voluntary migrants—such as elite expatriates including wealthy, white and Western young gay men. Drawing on 11 in-depth interviews conducted in Amsterdam, the Netherlands with young adult gay forced and voluntary migrants, this article aims to understand how sexual identification in tandem with bonding and bridging social capital diverge and converge between the two groups all while considering the interplay between the online and offline entanglements of their worlds.

In this report we present a reflection on the Collaborative Poetics Network's first "Carnival of Invention" which was held on 15th June 2018 at the University of Brighton, England. Collaborative poetics is an arts-based research method that brings together expertise from artists, academics, and community participants, to share knowledge and promote social change through engaging and accessible ways. On the day of the Carnival over 40 contributors from around the world came to participate in a series of workshops, presentations, installations and displays. In this article we outline the themes addressed on the day and the media utilized in these interactive and experiential sessions. We argue that this event supported the benefits of arts-based research in developing, analyzing, and communicating rich data sets. A normal conversation often follows a single transition in which adjacency pair demands co-related and immediate feedback. However, when this synergy is violated to some extent, it is believed that this will lead to unequal turn-taking especially in institutional dialogue. Different social settings could also allow some conversational participants to be dominant or less dominant. This study will investigate the effect of institutional role by using some of the strategy proposed by Heritage (1997). Heritage asserts that these four strategies that will be discussed in this paper namely turn-taking organization, turn design organization, sequence organization and repair organization, enables researcher to determine the institutional field or roles of any speaker in a conversation. Other factor such as lexical choices, which may likely to be associated with the speaker’s institutional representation will also be analyzed.

The paper addresses the problem of underdeveloped communication culture of social workers in Ukraine. The term of ‘social worker communication culture’ has been defined and its components have been listed. The criteria, parameters and development levels of social worker communication culture have been examined. Summative assessment has shown through the combination of quantitative and qualitative data analyses that communication culture of social workers in Ukraine should be improved urgently. The pedagogical conditions of social worker communication culture development and the suggested methodology have been substantiated and verified in a post-qualifying training. The obtained results can be of help when designing the training programmes for social workers in the Social Welfare System in Ukraine and other developing countries undergoing social and economic reforms.

The research is based on a set of scientific approaches, incorporating generative features of communicative and activity-oriented, dialogue, personality-oriented, culture-oriented, technological ones.The communication structure presented by the coherent aspects such as perceptive, communicating and interactive ones, along with the peculiarities of the process of cross-cultural communication (CCC) give grounds for defining the main components of the content of training future managers of foreign economic activity for CCC. They are motivating and orientating, conceptual and cognitive, communicating and activity-oriented. Within each component the basic criteria of evaluation of preparation of future managers of foreign economic activity for CCC are elaborated. Their availability is proved with the help of the definite indices.The conceptual and cognitive component is defined by the cognitive criterion according to which the efficiency and quality of mastered by students knowledge are assessed. The indices worked out within the cognitive criterion are knowledge quality (i.e. fullness and flexibility) and ways of acquiring new knowledge in CCC. On the base of the motivating and orientating component a subjective criterion is elaborated to evaluate the necessary professional and personal qualities of future specialists. It is represented by the indices of motivation for CCC preparation and reflexivity of communicating activity. Within the communicative and activity-oriented component an operational criterion is developed with the index of communicative skills and the index of skills to manage cross-cultural conflicts. On the base of the assessment criteria and indices the levels of future managers' preparation for CCC are differentiated into low, satisfactory, sufficient, high. The level characteristics are worked out and generalized in descriptions.

This article presents selected African concepts and discourses, such as African Renaissance and Pan-Africanism, as well as more recently evolved concepts, such as Afrofuturism, Afrotopia and Afropeanism, thereby taking new theoretical approaches into account.In parallel to these theoretical discourses, organisations in Africa are challenged by experiences of cultural diversity and globalised work spaces. This organisational situation is subject to new research on intercultural and international collaboration and communication.This article focuses on intercultural communication in Chinese-Tanzanian organisational contexts, using a case study approach within the hermeneutical philosophical frame. The study follows a qualitative research paradigm. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in three different organisational and entrepreneurial contexts and observations were made in one selected organisation. Data were analysed through a five-step model of content analysis. The observations supported the interpretation of empirical findings.Findings show that Chinese and Tanzanian employees experience intercultural communication with regard to four topics: within and across cultural and hierarchical boundaries, in online communication, with regard to support and in terms of working conditions.The discussion interlinks theoretical African discourses and empirical insights on intercultural Chinese-Tanzanian communication. Finally, conclusions are drawn and recommendations for theory and practice are given. Parallel zu diesen neuen theoretisch-philosophischen Diskursen, sind Organisationen praktischerweise in afrikanischen Kontexten herausgefordert, mit kultureller Diversität und globalisierten Arbeitskontexten umzugehen. Diese organisationale Situation ist zu einem neuen Forschungsfeld geworden, das interkulturelle und internationale Kollaboration und Kommunikation einschließt. Der Artikel zeigt empirische Ergebnisse zur interkulturellen Kommunikation zwischen chinesischen und tansanischen Arbeitnehmern. In diesem Artikel machen wir das Sprechen über Nachhaltigkeit zum Untersuchungsgegenstand, indem wir nachvollziehen, wie Nachhaltigkeit kommunikativ konstruiert und dabei als dynamische, aber relativ stabile soziale Fiktion erkennbar wird. Wir leisten gleichzeitig einen Beitrag zur methodischen und methodologischen Reflexion der handlungspraktischen Relevanz des (sozialen) Imaginären. Dabei stützen wir uns auf eine empirische Studie, innerhalb derer wir sozialwissenschaftlich induzierte Gespräche mit und zwischen Personen, die über die Nachhaltigkeit ihres Alltags sprachen, untersucht haben. Die Teilnehmenden dieser Gespräche sahen sich mit dem bekannten Dilemma konfrontiert, dass vollständig nachhaltiges Handeln aufgrund des universellen Geltungsanspruchs der Nachhaltigkeit unmöglich zu sein scheint. Mithilfe der dokumentarischen Methode arbeiten wir die Art und Weise des kommunikativen Umgangs mit der Unmöglichkeit, allen Nachhaltigkeitsanforderungen gerecht zu werden, an empirischem Material heraus. Im Fokus stehen dabei insbesondere Rechtfertigungsmuster, normativ-imaginäre Gedankenspiele und die rhetorische Distanzierung von tagtäglichen Handlungszwängen durch grammatikalische Konstruktionen im Konjunktiv, die auf wünschenswerten oder unerwünschten, dys- oder utopischen Alternativszenarien fußen. This editorial delivers an introduction to the Media and Communication thematic issue on “Communicating on/with Minorities” around the world. This thematic issue presents a multidisciplinary look at the field of communicating on and with different members of minority groups who, based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or a background in migration, experience relative disadvantage and marginalization compared to the dominant social group. The contributors to this thematic issue present a variety of professional contexts (i.e., portrayals in journalistic content, in fiction and non-fiction audiovisual content, on social media platforms and in health care). Mit der Theorie der Resonanz beschreibt Rosa intensive, nicht-entfremdete menschliche Weltbeziehungen als Erfahrungen der Resonanz, der Affizierung und Anverwandlung. In der theoretischen Diskussion viel beachtet, blieben empirische Zugänge bislang selten. In der vorliegenden Studie wird der Frage nachgegangen, unter welchen Umständen Menschen in medienvermittelter interpersonaler Kommunikation Resonanzerfahrungen erleben, und welchen Einfluss spezifische Medieneigenschaften dabei nehmen. Dafür wird die soziologische Resonanztheorie von Rosa mit Medienwirkungstheorien wie der Theorie der sozialen Präsenz sowie mit der psychologischen Flow-Theorie kombiniert und in Beziehung gesetzt. Rosa selbst verortet Resonanzerfahrungen in vielen Bereichen der täglichen Lebensgestaltung. Mit einem Mixed-Method-Design aus Experience Sampling und problemzentrierten Leitfadeninterviews wurden daher die alltäglichen Kommunikationserfahrungen von elf jungen Erwachsenen zwischen 18 und 23 Jahren untersucht. Ziel war die Analyse erlebter Resonanzerfahrungen hinsichtlich möglicher beeinflussender Aspekte. Auch die Zusammenhänge von Resonanz und Medienwahl wurden betrachtet. Die Untersuchung zeigte, dass die Teilnehmenden in unterschiedlichem Maße Resonanzerfahrungen erlebten. Dabei spielten Medieneigenschaften entsprechend der medialen Reichhaltigkeit eine Rolle, starken Einfluss nahmen jedoch auch Aspekte wie Konzentration, Herausforderung und Wohlbefinden. Die vier Kommunikationsziele Resonanz, Verständnis, Kontrolle und Distanz konnten als Entscheidungsfaktoren für die Medienwahl identifiziert werden. Auch aufgrund kommunikationsfremder Ziele verzichteten die Teilnehmenden wiederholt auf potentiell intensivere Resonanzerfahrungen., With the theory of resonance Rosa describes intensive, non-alienated human world relations as experiences of resonance, of affection and transformation. While this theory has received much attention in theoretical discussions, empirical approaches have so far remained rare. This study investigates the circumstances under which people experience resonance in mediated interpersonal communication, and what influence specific media properties have on this. For this purpose, Rosa's sociological resonance theory is combined, and put into relation with, media effects theories such as the theory of social presence as well as the psychological flow theory. Rosa himself locates experiences of resonance in many areas of everyday life. Using a mixed-method design of experience sampling and problem-centered guided interviews, therefore, the everyday communication experiences of eleven young adults between the ages of 18 and 23 were investigated. The aim was to analyze experienced resonance regarding possible influencing aspects. The correlations between resonance and media choice were also considered. The study showed that the participants experienced resonance to varying degrees. Media characteristics according to media richness played a role, but aspects such as concentration, challenge and well-being also had a strong influence. The four communication goals resonance, understanding, control and distance could be identified as decision factors for the choice of media. A discourse analytic approach was used to examine how twenty young adult romantic couples (ages 19-26) employed criticisms and insinuations of infidelity in their natural unstructured interactions to indirectly and creatively pursue closeness. The research has been motivated by an expanding arena of research that shows that ostensibly contentious interactional moments among young adult intimates may not be adversarial, but rather may be methods that promote a playful repartee that leads to affiliation. I demonstrate how criticisms are both often highly gendered and typically formulated and responded to in tongue-in-cheek, non-serious ways that involve the creative use of various forms of irony, laughter, rekeyings, abrupt non-sequiturs, and topic shifts that mitigate the potential for the criticisms to become adversarial. Similarly, the insinuations of infidelity were often designed by the couples to attend to interactional breaches. They functioned as a brief but effective way for one partner to signal that they had been dismissed or neglected in the preceding discursive turns. In his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination to be President of the United States, Donald J. Trump presented the audience with a stark world of good vs. evil, chaos vs. stability. We use Burke's concept good terms and evil terms to rhetorically analyze the acceptance speech. While Trump used specific references to real events in his use of good and evil terms, his promises for stability over chaos are indefinite terms, which allowed a divided Republican Party to unite behind his candidacy. However, governance has required concrete concepts to solve real world issues.

The study reveals the pedagogical conditions of training future managers of foreign economic activity for cross-cultural communication. The analysis of the scientific research in this field has shown that the essence of the pedagogical conditions has not been generalized or systemized yet. On the base of the invariable vectors of the pedagogical process, the pedagogical conditions of training future managers of foreign economic activity for cross-cultural communication are outlined. They are: creating multicultural surrounding in the process of training managers for gaining experience in cross-cultural communication (organization); adaptive gradual management of the educational activity with due regards for personal, professional, communicative qualities of future managers of foreign economic activity (management); subject and subject interaction, directed at the optimal management of cross-cultural conflicts (communication).

This study seeks to investigate the ways in which the speech act of disagreement is expressed by young male and female Persian speakers. To collect the data 100 participants (50 males, 50 females) were selected randomly from among undergraduate and graduate students of University of Isfahan and Islamic Azad University (Najafabad branch). The focus of this study was on the role that gender and power might play in the employment of strategies to mitigate the threat of disagreement. Students were asked to complete a discourse completion test (DCT) designed by the researcher. They were supposed to read nine suggestions situations, and react to them via making disagreements. Respondents were expected to disagree with three interlocutors with higher status, three peers and three with lower status. In order to analyze the utterances of disagreement, Muntigl and Turnbull’s taxonomy (1998) was employed. The results revealed that although both males and females were concerned about the power status of interlocutors and try to apply the appropriate strategies while expressing their disagreements, females were more cautious and used different strategies from those of males.

This thematic issue brings together papers by researchers who are studying the ways that today’s adolescents interact with their peers, families, and the larger media environment in the digital age. The contributors highlight both the challenges and the opportunities that this new age presents for the healthy development of young people. (author's abstract)

Der Smartphonegebrauch durchdringt immer umfassender alltägliche Handlungsweisen, sodass direkte soziale Interaktionen auch davon beeinflusst werden. Es stellt sich die Frage, wie sich dies auf Gesprächssituationen auswirkt. Der vorliegende Text setzt eine wechselseitige Beeinflussung und Bedeutungszuschreibung von Akteuren voraus, vor dem Hintergrund einer gemeinsamen Sinn-Konstitution in Konversationen. Es wird untersucht, welche Wirkung durch den Smartphonegebrauch beobachtbar ist, wenn die aufeinander bezogene Aufmerksamkeit nicht mehr vorauszusetzen ist. Im Ergebnis wird festgehalten, dass die Smartphone-Nutzung in der Face-to-Face-Interaktion eine Unterbrechung der Kommunikation auslösen und je nach Intensität und Dauer eine damit einhergehende Verletzung der Norm von gegenseitiger Anerkennung und schließlich auch eine Gefährdung der Konstituierung des sozialen Selbst der Gesprächspartner hervorrufen kann. Dieses Ungleichgewicht wird wiederum mit Hilfe des Smartphones selbst gelöst, indem es als Substitut für die ausbleibende Bestätigung genutzt werden kann.

While fathers seldom say "I love you" to their son(s), there is also acknowledgment that sons rarely say it to their father. Confessions of love are like notes in a melody of previous affirmations, so what is it like for a son to say it, especially if large parts of his life are spent in "connective avoidance" with his dad? Writing on the (im)possibility of eventually saying "I love you," just before he died, I offer a "blissfully poetic" account of the experience of saying it. I also reflect on the lingering significance it has had for my experience of loss and bereavement. Although this text offers no easy formula, it ends by showing what a text of bliss might eventually look like for a son in recovery. Addressing the questions, so what? Interpersonale Kommunikation erlebt durch technologische Entwicklungen einen kontinuierlichen Wandel. Während Festnetztelefone geographische Einheiten miteinander verbinden, stellen Mobiltelefone eine Verbindung zwischen Individuen her. Smartphones erweitern die kommunikativen Möglichkeiten durch internetbasierte Kommunikationskanäle. Diese Entwicklung führt einerseits zu einer Komplexitätsreduktion kommunikativen Handelns, andererseits zu einer Komplexitätssteigerung. Dieser Beitrag geht von der These aus, dass beide Aspekte parallel und in einem wechselseitigen Einfluss zueinander bestehen. Online communication platforms have enabled millions of users to easily communicate with one another. WhatsApp is one of the most popular communication platforms in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), especially among university students. To better understand the effectiveness of WhatsApp, this research examines the trends and impact of WhatsApp usage among undergraduate university students in Abu Dhabi. The study also investigates the use of emoji and text messages as a replacement to the interpersonal communication that conventionally occurs in the process of face-to-face interaction. By means of a survey, this study found that Abu Dhabi University students consider WhatsApp to be an effective interpersonal communication medium. Although miscommunications often occur while using WhatsApp, the perceptions of the respondents varied greatly due to their own experiences and feelings regarding its use.

Ethische Fallbesprechungen (EFB) sind ein zentrales Element der Ethikberatung im Gesundheits- und Sozialwesen. Die Qualität von EFB hängt auch von der Selbstreflexions- und Diskursfähigkeit der Akteure ab. Um diese Kompetenzen zu fördern, wird in diesem Beitrag das Instrument der inneren EFB erarbeitet. Das Modell der inneren EFB verbindet das Konzept der inneren Ratsversammlung (Schulz von Thun) mit dem Schema einer prinzipienorientierten Falldiskussion (Marckmann und Mayer) und umfasst vier Schritte: 1) Wahrnehmung der inneren Pluralität; 2) Prinzipienethische Strukturierung; 3) Brainstorming und kritische Reflexion; 4) Entwurf einer integrierten Stellungnahme. Ethical case deliberation (ECD) is a central element of ethical consultation in health care and welfare services. The quality of ECD depends, among others, on the ability of the actors to self-reflect and to engage in discourse. To promote these competencies, the instrument of the inner ECD is developed in this paper. The inner ECD combines the concept of inner council (Schulz von Thun) with the processing logic of an ECD oriented to the four principles of biomedical ethics (Marckmann and Mayer). The inner ECD encloses four steps: 1) perception of internal plurality; 2) structuring according to the four principles approach; 3) brainstorming and critical reflection; 4) integrated response.

Most of the research on the implications of mobile communication for social networks has focused on its uses and consequences in the intimate realm of close friends, family, and loved ones. A number of scholars have also become interested in ways that mobile communication helps and hinders the broader realm of network connectivity, including diverse, weak, and new ties. A collection of theoretical perspectives on mobile communication and diverse, weak, and new ties proposes that heightened connectivity in the intimate realm can come at the expense of being engaged more broadly – a scenario I characterize as network privatism. At the same time, the available empirical research in the literature tends to tell a different story, or rather stories. This analysis brings theory and empirical findings into closer conversation with one another by reviewing and synthesizing the literature in this area. Observed patterns in the literature offer new insight into questions of mobile communication and network privatism, while also pointing to opportunities for refinement of theory, analysis, and measurement as this line of inquiry further develops.

Objective: The purpose of this study was assessment of the human communication indexes between employees branches of Social Security Organization (SSO) of Tehran. Method: The method used in this study, the survey method is most common in quantitative research. The sample size was calculated based on Morgan 271 were randomly selected based on these numbers. This study was conducted to collect data and information from the questionnaire were used. Questionnaire consisted of 32 questions of human relations which 5 first question demographic questionnaire and subjects such as sex, education, work experience, marital status and age were included in the study, as well as other questions samples to determine the basis of human relations based on the five choice Likert scale (always, often, sometimes, rarely, never) was designed. In this project, SPSS software was used to analysis the data. Findings: The results showed that the level of communication skills of staff from the employees' point of view is evaluated desirable (p0.05). Thus, no significant correlation between duration of working on their score is an index of human communications staff. Staff's view about the employees in the organization about human relationships in terms of a significant relationship between marital statuses (p>0.05) of employees and their score to human communications index of staff. However, 35% of married people and 19% of single people evaluated communication skills of personnel, appropriate. Thus, there is no significant correlation between duration of working and their score to staff index of human communications (p>0.05). Disponível em: O artigo objetivou identificar a percepção de produtores rurais de Tupã/SP sobre a legislação que implantou e regulamenta a logística reversa de embalagens de agrotóxicos, bem como as informações que têm sobre sua obrigação. Buscou-se trazer elementos contidos na legislação e considerações de diversos autores, por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica, assim como foi aplicado um formulário com 19 questões, sobre o comportamento de 20 produtores rurais frente às informações relativas à devolução das embalagens vazias de agrotóxicos. As discussões revelam que cerca de 60% dos respondentes são indiferentes, conhecem muito pouco ou desconhecem sua responsabilidade como primeiro elo da cadeia da logística reversa das embalagens vazias de agrotóxicos, talvez em virtude de falhas no processo de comunicação e na fiscalização. Sugere-se que deva haver maior empenho do Poder Público com vistas a intensificar a fiscalização e tornar mais compreensível as responsabilidades desses agricultores.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Logística reversa, comunicação e agronegócios, embalagens vazias de agrotóxicos, legislação ambiental. ABSTRACTWith the purpose to identify the perception of farmers Tupa/SP on legislation that established and governs the reverse logistics of empty pesticide containers, as well as the information they have on their obligation. Este artigo apresentará uma discussão sobre a educação inclusiva e noções de deficiência. As reflexões são resultado de um estudo que produziu quatro narrativas (registradas por meio da história oral) em que se revelaram concepções sobre a deficiência elaboradas por professores que convivem com crianças com deficiência. Os objetivos do texto são, portanto, apresentar um repertório teórico que dá base para as leituras feitas das entrevistas; refletir sobre como se produziu os registros por meio da história oral; e apontar reflexões iniciais sobre o que aparece em comum nessas narrativas dos professores. A análise inicial que apresentamos aqui se norteia pelas contribuições da linha de estudos teóricos chamados disability studies e pela leitura das narrativas. Tal diálogo permitiu compreender como se dá a construção de sentidos e de significados relacionados à criança com deficiência para esses sujeitos. O estudo preocupa-se com tais concepções, pois acredita que podem influenciar nos contextos de formação, no seu desenvolvimento humano e processos identitários. The reflections are the result of a study that produced four narratives (recorded through Oral History) that proved concepts on disability prepared by teachers and parents living with children with disabilities. The text's objectives are therefore present a theoretical repertoire that gives basis for the readings of the interviews; reflect on how to produce the records through oral history; and point out initial reflections on what appears in common in these narratives of parents and teachers. The initial analysis presented here was guide by the theoretical line contributions call by disability studies and by the narratives reading. Such dialogue allows us to understand how is the construction of senses and meanings related to the child with disabilities for these subjects. The study is concerned with such concepts, as it believes that they can influence the formation of contexts in its human development and identity processes. Las reflexiones son el resultado de un estudio que produjo cuatro narrativas (grabado a través de la historia oral) que resultó conceptos sobre deficiencia preparados por los profesores y los padres que viven con los niños con deficiencia. Los objetivos del texto, por tanto, se presentará un repertorio teórico que da base para las lecturas de las entrevistas; reflexionar sobre cómo producir los registros a través de la historia oral; y señalar reflexiones iniciales sobre lo que aparece en común en estos relatos de padres y maestros. El primer análisis que aquí se presenta se basa en los aportes de la línea de los estudios teóricos y llamada la disability studies mediante la lectura de los relatos. Este diálogo nos permite entender cómo es la construcción de sentidos y significados relacionados con el niño con deficiencia para estos temas. El estudio se ocupa de tales conceptos, ya que cree que pueden influir en la formación de los contextos en sus procesos de desarrollo y la identidad humana. The current evils of the scholars and researchers are the consequence of a dysfunctional communication system. The incompatibility between the spirit of the laws and its mode of application illustrate a worrying retreat of the democratic principles. The university is the mirror of the political system.

Objetivo: Identificar na literatura como ocorre a comunicação entre profissionais de saúde e os pacientes com deficiência auditiva. Método: Revisão integrativa. A busca foi realizada nas bases de dados MEDLINE, BDENF, LILACS e SciELO por meio de seus descritores: comunicação, enfermagem, deficiência auditiva, surdez, surdos e cuidados de enfermagem. Resultados: Os 19 artigos foram agrupados nas seguintes categorias: estratégias de comunicação; formação profissional; relacionamento do profissional com o surdo e sugestões para melhoria da comunicação entre surdos e profissionais de saúde. Conclusão: Cada surdo apresenta necessidades comunicacionais específicas, cabendo ao enfermeiro a escolha, junto com o surdo, da melhor estratégia de comunicação, respeitando suas limitações.

We consider the characteristics of one form of digital narrative—the blog—and what they may offer to personal narratives about mothering, families, and food and other resources. We draw on narrative analysis of six months of posts from two blogs about feeding families, written by mothers in the context of constrained economic, time, socioemotional, and environmental resources, to make a second-order analysis of the features of blogs that operate to support or transgress normative narratives. We focus on how, on the "About Me" pages of these blogs, the relations between the written and visual narratives, and the semantic multiplicities and contradictions, the styles and the cross-platform genres of the written stories, generate both normative and transgressive narratives around mothering and family, the bloggers' own involvements with the blog, and resource issues. This study examines how Occupy Wall Street (OWS) protestors’ practices and stated understanding of media act on social perceptions of networked media. It stems from a discursive content analysis of online commentary from OWS protestors and supporters, using different sources from the first Adbusters blog in July 2011 until May 2012. We demonstrate how the belief in the myth of an egalitarian Internet was incorporated into the offline structure of OWS and led OWS participants to adopt rhetoric that distances the movement from past protest actions by stating the movement was “like the Internet”.
