Abstract

A comprehensive set ofPARTHENOS Guidelines to FAIRify data management and make data reusableis focusing on the topic of common policies. This compact guide offers twenty guidelines to align the efforts of data producers, data archivists and data users in humanities and social sciences to make research data as reusable as possible based upon the FAIR Principles. Each guideline has recommendations for both researchers and archives as it is recognised that different priorities may apply to each case. The guidelines result from the work of over fifty PARTHENOS project members. They were responsible for investigating commonalities in the implementation of policies and strategies for research data management and used results from desk research, questionnaires and interviews with selected experts to gather around one hundred current data management policies (including guides for preferred formats, data review policies and best practices, both formal as well as tacit). Abstract

Since the first ESFRI roadmap in 2006, multiple humanities Research Infrastructures (RIs) have been set up all over the European continent, supporting archaeologists (ARIADNE), linguists (CLARIN-ERIC), Holocaust researchers (EHRI), cultural heritage specialists (IPERION-CH) and others. These examples only scratch the surface of the breadth of research communities that have benefited from close cooperation in the European Research Area. While each field developed discipline-specific services over the years, common themes can also be distinguished. All humanities RIs address, in varying degrees, questions around research data management, the use of standards and the desired interoperability of data across disciplinary boundaries. This article sheds light on how cluster project PARTHENOS developed pooled services and shared solutions for its audience of humanities researchers, RI managers and policymakers. In a time where the convergence of existing infrastructure is becoming ever more important – with the construction of a European Open Science Cloud as an audacious, ultimate goal – we hope that our experiences inform future work and provide inspiration on how to exploit synergies in interdisciplinary, transnational, scientific cooperation. 4. On Open Access to Research Data: Experiences and reflections from DANS.

Abstract

This paper addresses the question of what open access means in relation to research data. To that end we (1) briefly discuss the definition of open access and the most important expected benefits; (2) highlight the publication - data distinction and the challenges regarding research data; (3) discuss research data and open access in terms of its focus, licensing, and current practices at DANS in publishing data sets open access. Use case illustrate challenges and positive developments. As a result, we see that open access for research data is not clearly defined and that the focus lies on publications, but in general it should come down to accessibility with minimal restrictions for reuse. While publications may need a different business model, making research data open access faces three challenges: awareness is needed for the importance of data and the value for publishing them; ownership should not comprise research data being open access; data management is an essential process in publishing data and needs to be part of a research project. We feel that open access regarding research data logically focusses on reuse. Therefore, it seems logical to combine open access with the FAIR principles. In terms of licensing, it is best not to license data at all, but to apply the Creative Commons CC0 tool. However, citing is a requirement in the initial definition of open access, which would make it relevant to use a Creative Commons licence. CC-BY is in that respect the best match with regards to the open access definition. While there is no clarity yet about what open access for research data exactly means, we see there is a gradual transition to making data open by using the Creative Commons means. This transition does still need careful guidance as publicly sharing research data is not yet common practice. Some extra reuse conditions may then help in at least making the data accessible. In summary, open access for research data relates more to reuse and less to accessibility and it is here where the requirements still need to be defined and put in place. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
