Abstract In 2015, Radboud University (Nijmegen, the Netherlands) started a project to extend its CRIS (Metis) with functionalities that allow researchers to register (metadata) and archive (uploading files) their research data, while at the same time making the data available for reuse in a FAIR way (via national Dutch data archive DANS). The new functionality was integrated with already existing functions in the CRIS, thus offering a one-stop-shop interface to researchers in which registration and archiving of data is combined with registration of publications, the uploading of full text to the university's repository, the linking of datasets and publications and the creation of researcher's profile (CV) pages. Next to the functional extension of the CRIS, the project also included an organizational element: the establishment of support and management structures and workflows, including data curation processes, in order to assure the quality of the data registration process and to foster the FAIRness of the research data. In the period up to now, we continued to transform the university's CRIS, by bringing it in line with the research life cycle perspective and policy changes in Research Data Management (RDM), including a Data Management Plan (DMP) module and FAIR data. In this paper, it will be argued and demonstrated that both for researchers and research institutes, a CRIS oriented approach to RDM brings added value. We also point to future use cases that put a central role for CRIS's even earlier within the research life cycle, e.g. at pre-registration of research questions and informed consent/ethics approval procedures. We further envision our CRIS to play a linking pin function between storage and service locations of data during research and at publication. The paper will use Radboud University as a good practice of past, present and future use of CRIS's in the research life cycle that universities and research institutes as well as researchers and research support desks are currently dealing with in the FAIR data era. In 2016, Radboud University (Nijmegen, The Netherlands) and national data archive DANS initiated a project to extend Radboud University's CRIS (METIS) to allow researchers to register and archive their research data in the CRIS, at the same time making data available for reuse at the DANS archive. As we speak (spring 2018), a data management plan (DMP) module is being added, allowing researchers to draft and register DMPs via the CR IS. All modules together offer a one-stop-shop for researchers: data registration and archiving combined with Registration of DMPs and articles, uploading full text to the publication repository, linking between results and the creation of researcher's profile pages. The paper will explain the technical adjustments to the CRIS and DANS systems, and the services guaranteeing FAIR data archiving. This latter also includes services on data curation processes, which secure the quality of the metadata and documentation of the archived data. We use Radboud University as a good practice of the use of CRISs in the research data life cycle. Background: Epilepsy prevalence is over 20% for those with ID. It is difficult to diagnose and treat and more likely to be treatment resistant. The evidence informing prescribing is sparse, particularly for new drugs such as perampanel (PMP). Aims of the Study: This study seeks to strengthen the research evidence regarding PMP for people with ID by pooling information from two isolated and separately conducted studies: the UK‐based Epilepsy Database Register (Ep‐ID) and the data from the Kempenhaeghe clinic in the Netherlands. Methods: A single data set of comparable data was created and analysed under agreement and supervision of a UK statistician. Results: Seizure reduction within twelve months was evident in 62% of Dutch and 47% of UK patients. Retention rates were higher for those in the UK (P =.01) and for patients with moderate to profound ID, whilst side effects were more prominent in the Dutch cohort. Conclusions: Comparable rates of seizure reduction are in line with estimates for non‐ID patients, adding to the evidence suggesting that PMP has a similar impact on those with ID. Taking a European perspective and sharing data across centres can help strengthen the evidence for prescribing antiepileptic drugs in the ID population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The VALID Data Archive is an open multimedia data archive in which data from children and adults with language and/or communication problems are brought together. A pilot project, funded by CLARIN-NL, was carried out in which five existing data sets were curated. This pilot enabled us to build up experience in conserving different kinds of pathological language data in a searchable and persistent manner. These data sets reflect current research in language pathology rather well, both in the range of designs and the variety in pathological problems, such as Specific Language Impairment, deafness, dyslexia, and ADHD. Recent developments in instrumentation and methodology are major driving forces in the advances of solid Earth sciences. The deployment of large and dense sensor networks enables data centres to acquire data of increased volume and quality. The analysis of such data provides scientists with a better understanding about natural phenomena in the subsurface. At the same time new challenges arise to exploit the growing information potential. Innovative methods based on Artificial Intelligence offer concrete opportunities to tackle those challenges. In this paper we investigate Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for seismo-acoustic event classification in The Netherlands. A supervised deep learning approach is applied to continuous seismic waveforms in order to automatically detect seismo-acoustic events and discriminate their sources. Our region of interest is characterised by high seismic noise conditions and intense anthropogenic activity which deeply influence the recorded signals. Site conditions and our aim for a tool that could support operational earthquake analysis motivated us to devise a novel specialised CNN architecture. Building on existing approaches, we designed, trained and evaluated two CNN models: arch-time and arch-spect. Our results suggest that as CNN inputs, spectrograms are more suitable than continuous waveforms. Therefore, we propose a model (arch-spect) that achieves a performance among the highest in modern source detection systems. Furthermore, we focus on explainability aspects and propose a method to gain insights in the behaviour of a 'black-box' deep learning classification system. By generating visualisations of activations we aim to empower domain experts with a useable cross-checking tool and pave the way for a broader operational uptake of Artificial Intelligence based methods. • Assessing feasibility of DL-based detection of low-magnitude induced seismo-acoustic events. • Evaluating performance in comparison with an operational seismic detection system. • Introducing a visualisation mechanism for the inspection of CNN (intermediate) results. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) operates two operational dual-polarization C-band weather radars providing 2D radar rainfall products. Attenuation can result in severe underestimation of rainfall amounts, particularly in convective situations that are known to have high impact on society. To improve the radar-based precipitation estimates, two attenuation correction methods are evaluated and compared: 1) modified Kraemer (MK) method, i.e., Hitschfeld–Bordan where parameters of the power-law Zh–kh relation are adjusted such that reflectivities in the entire dataset do not exceed 59 dBZh and attenuation correction is limited to 10 dB; and 2) using two-way path-integrated attenuation computed from the dual-polarization moment specific differential phase Kdp (Kdp method). In both cases the open-source Python library wradlib is employed for the actual attenuation correction. A radar voxel only contributes to the computed path-integrated attenuation if its height is below the forecasted freezing-level height from the numerical weather prediction model HARMONIE-AROME. The methods are effective in improving hourly and daily quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), where the Kdp method performs best. The verification against rain gauge data shows that the underestimation diminishes from 55% to 37% for hourly rainfall for the Kdp method when the gauge indicates more than 10 mm of rain in that hour. The improvement for the MK method is less pronounced, with a resulting underestimation of 40%. This article concentrates on the retro-archiving of older digital research data. The ADA approach was developed and used to retro-archive older data files, most of which were between 10 and 30 years old. The origin and main characteristics of the ADA approach are described in the second section of the article. The third section discusses two recent data-archiving pilot projects that were conducted in the Netherlands. The first of these projects, the ADA project, laid the foundation for the ADA approach, which was subsequently applied and tested again in the second project, eDNA, which focused on archaeological data.
