An overview of Sweden's hydroelectric system and hydroelectric infrastructure is presented.

The European Space Agency SnowSAR instrument is a side-looking, dual-polarised (VV/VH), X/Ku band synthetic aperture radar (SAR), operable from various sizes of aircraft. Between 2010 and 2013, the instrument was deployed at several sites in Northern Finland, Austrian Alps and northern Canada. The purpose of the airborne campaigns was to measure the backscattering properties of snow-covered terrain to support the development of snow water equivalent retrieval techniques using SAR. SnowSAR was deployed in Sodankylä, Northern Finland, for a single flight mission in March 2011 and 12 missions at two sites (tundra and boreal forest) in the winter of 2011–2012. Over the Austrian Alps, three flight missions were performed between November 2012 and February 2013 over three sites located in different elevation zones representing a montane valley, Alpine tundra and a glacier environment. In Canada, a total of two missions were flown in March and April 2013 over sites in the Trail Valley Creek watershed, Northwest Territories, representative of the tundra snow regime. This paper introduces the airborne SAR data and coincident in situ information on land cover, vegetation and snow properties. 4. A comprehensive spatial model for historical travel effort -- a case study in Finland.

Contributing to multidisciplinary studies of human population history, this paper presents an analysis chain to comprehensively model the historical travel environment in Finland, based on a study of spatial patterns of overall accessibility within the country. We created a spatial historical travel environment model over the whole country using high-quality terrain and landscape spatial data, combined with information from historical sources that characterize the landscape in terms of travel effort given the environmental and human-related factors current up until the late 19th century. Spatial analyses of historical travel effort based on the travel environment model indicate travel speeds for different parts of the country, ranging from 0.6 to 5.3 km/h. This is nearly a tenfold range, potentially highly significant for studies relying on historical travel effort and contacts between population groups in Finland. The results show that the overall travel effort in southern Finland is significantly smaller than in the north: almost all areas in southern Finland have average travel speeds above 3 km/h, whereas the average travel speeds below 2.5 km/h are typical in the north. A more detailed study using random 100 km transects highlights the variability of the least-cost routes in different landscapes and between different source data combinations in each cost surface. The paper identifies great potential in combining the existing spatial data archives with archaeological, linguistic, and genetic data in a GIS analysis, to study the travel effort and its impact on the observed spatial patterns of languages, genetic traits, and archaeological findings. 5. Google May Open Data Center in Finnish Paper Mill.

The data center will be opened on a site of a closed paper mill which the company has acquired for $51 million. Google Inc. claims that first there are a number of contingencies to be resolved and plans to be put in place.

The open-source Video In Situ Snowfall Sensor (VISSS) is introduced as a novel instrument for the characterization of particle shape and size in snowfall. The VISSS consists of two cameras with LED backlights and telecentric lenses that allow accurate sizing and combine a large observation volume with relatively high pixel resolution and a design that limits wind disturbance. VISSS data products include various particle properties such as maximum extent, cross-sectional area, perimeter, complexity, and sedimentation velocity. Initial analysis shows that the VISSS provides robust statistics based on up to 10 000 unique particle observations per minute. Comparison of the VISSS with the collocated PIP (Precipitation Imaging Package) and Parsivel instruments at Hyytiälä, Finland, shows excellent agreement with the Parsivel but reveals some differences for the PIP that are likely related to PIP data processing and limitations of the PIP with respect to observing smaller particles. The open-source nature of the VISSS hardware plans, data acquisition software, and data processing libraries invites the community to contribute to the development of the instrument, which has many potential applications in atmospheric science and beyond. The Nadir Mapper (NM) and Nadir Profiler (NP) within the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suites (OMPS) are ultraviolet spectrometers to measure Earth radiance and Solar irradiance spectra from 300–380 nm and 250–310 nm, respectively. The OMPS NM and NP instruments flying on the Suomi-NPP (SNPP) satellite have provided over ten years of operational Sensor Data Records (SDRs) data sets to support a variety of OMPS Environmental Data Record (EDR) applications. However, the discrepancies of quality remain in the operational OMPS SDR data prior to 28 June 2021 due to changes in calibration algorithms associated with the calibration coefficient look-up tables (LUTs) during this period. In this study, we present results for the newly ( v 2 ) reprocessed SNPP OMPS NM and NP SDR data prior to 30 June 2021, which uses consistent calibration tables with improved accuracy. Compared with a previous ( v 1 ) reprocessing, this new reprocessing includes the improvements associated with the following updated tables or error correction: an updated stray light correction table for the NM, an off-nadir geolocation error correction for the NM, an artificial offset error correction in the NM dark processing code, and biweekly solar wavelength LUTs for the NP. This study further analyzes the impact of each improvement on the quality of the OMPS SDR data by taking advantage of the existing OMPS SDR calibration/validation studies. Finally, this study compares the v 2 reprocessed OMPS data sets with the operational and the v 1 reprocessed data sets. The results demonstrate that the new reprocessing significantly improves the accuracy and consistency of the life-time SNPP OMPS NM and NP SDR data sets. It also advances the uniformity of the data over the dichroic range from 300 to 310 nm between the NM and NP. The normalized radiance differences at the same wavelength between the NM and NP observations are reduced from 0.001 order ( v 1 reprocessing) or 0.01 order (operational processing) to 0.001 order or smaller. Abstract: This is the first research paper on data center from Finland. The objectives of this study are to evaluate air management and energy performance of cooling system and investigate the possibilities of energy saving and reuse in the data center. Field measurements, particularly for long term''s IT and facility powers, were conducted. Different performance metrics for the cooling system and power consumption were examined and analysed. Key problem areas and energy saving opportunities were identified. The electrical end use breakdown was estimated. Results show that IT equipment intake conditions were within the recommended or allowable ranges from ASHRAE. The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) value for a typical year was about 1.33. Noticeable recirculation of hot air was not observed, but extreme bypass air was found. The air change rate was set much bigger than the recommended ASHRAE''s value. There was no heat recovery system. The air management and heat recovery issues therefore need to be addressed. Fan speeds (Computer Room Air-Conditioning Unit) should be reduced and the ventilation rate should be minimized. Further, a simulated heat recovery system was presented demonstrating that the data center could potentially provide yearly space and hot water heating for 30,916m2 non-domestic building. 9. Methodological and Ethical Dilemmas of Archiving Qualitative Data.

The Finnish Social Science Data archive started archiving qualitative data in 2003. Many researchers found this to be highly problematic. Their main reason for opposing the archiving of qualitative data was research ethics. Researchers who oppose the archiving of qualitative interviews mainly appeal to the confidential nature of the interview situation. This kind of argument against archiving is put under scrutiny in this article. It covers issues such as the presentation of research subjects and the understanding of research relationship. Researchers tend to define the interview relationship as unpredictable and private, and interviewees as helpless participants in need of protection. In contrast, the interviewees themselves define the relationship as an institutional one aiming to foster science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
