Background: Pes planus, commonly known as flat foot is a deformity of the foot, characterized by loss of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. There are several diagnostic methods available, such -as radiographs and digital footprint scanning techniques, that involve the usage of ink, dyes, and expensive instrumentation which may be harmful and not readily available at all time. The arch height may prove to be a user-friendly, portable, and affordable means of grading the foot. However, no tools were found during the search for review of literature. Hence, a need for a tool to measure the arch height and further give standard range of the arch height for flat feet and non-flat feet was identified. Objective: To design a tool and further provide values to differentiate flatfoot and non-flatfoot using arch height as a measurement tool. Relevance: The instrument was designed to quantify arch height and values to differentiate flatfoot and non-flatfoot are provided by comparison with Chippaux Smirak Index (CSI). Method: The study evaluated the medial longitudinal arches of 30 individuals (60 feet) using static footprints and arch height measurement with tool. The footprints were classified into flatfoot and non-flatfoot using CSI. Data was subjected to appropriate statistical analysis. Results: The range of medial longitudinal arch height between 15-21 mm in sitting position and 13-19 mm in standing position identified with non-flat foot, while the range of medial longitudinal arch height between 10-14 mm in sitting position and 8-12 mm in standing position identified with flat foot when compared with CSI. These findings suggest that the tool can be used effectively to measure the medial longitudinal arch height and differentiate between individuals with flat foot and non-flat foot. Conclusion: The study concludes that the tool is effective in measuring the medial longitudinal arch height and can be used to differentiate between individuals with flat foot and non-flat foot. Approximately 90% of patients with arthritis exhibit forefoot deformities, including deformities within the metatarsophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints. Current pharmacological treatment with Disease Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) consists of two groups: synthetic drugs (sDMARDs) and biological drugs (bDMARDs). The objective of our study was to investigate foot anthropometry changes in RA patients based on the administered treatment over a five-year period Method: A longitudinal analysis was conducted with RA patients who were grouped based on their pharmacological treatment. The pharmacological treatment groups were categorized into (I) methotrexate (MTX), (II) MTX plus biological treatments (including all variables), (III) biological treatment alone, and (IV) a miscellaneous group comprising patients with diverse treatments, including patients for whom various drugs had failed or who had not achieved remission with pharmacological treatment. For the anthropometric measurements, a foot measurement platform validated by McPoil et al. was used. Post hoc analyses with Bonferroni correction were performed to identify pairwise differences between the treatment groups while controlling for Type I errors due to multiple comparisons. Results: In the period from 2018 to 2023, significant changes were observed in several foot measurements. For instance, the MTX group showed a statistically significant increase in left heel width (p = 0.026). The MTX group experienced a slight increase in left foot length, while the Biologics and MTX + Bio groups exhibited more substantial increases in both maximum medial arch height and midfoot width. Conclusions: Different RA treatments can have a significant impact on foot structure over a five-year period, showing notable changes in heel width and overall foot morphology. Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of minimally invasive ultrasound-guided fascial release and a foot orthoses with first metatarsal head cutout on the biomechanics of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot in cadaveric specimens. Design: A cross-sectional study was designed (20 body donors). Anthropometric measurements of the foot, foot posture index, and the windlass test and force were measured in different conditions: unloaded, loaded position, with foot orthoses, after a 25% plantar fascia release and after a 50% release. Results: For the anthropometric measurements of the foot, differences were found in foot length (P = 0.009), arch height (P < 0.001), and midfoot width (P = 0.019) when comparing the unloaded versus foot orthoses condition. When foot orthoses were compared with 25% plantar fascial release, differences were found in foot length (P = 0.014) and arch height (P < 0.001). In the comparison with 50% plantar fascial release, differences were found in the arch height (P < 0.001). A significant interaction between foot orthoses condition and grades was found in the arch height during the windlass test (P = 0.021). Conclusions: The results indicate that the presence of foot orthoses leads to a significant increase in arch height compared with other conditions. Background: Dimensions of foot provide valuable information in determining the sex and stature of the individual based on various statistical formulae and equations. There were many physical anthropometric studies show the gender difference. Objectives: 1. To determine the correlation of various measurements of the feet with gender. 2. To derive logistic regression equations for gender determination from foot dimensions among Telanganite adults. Material and Methods: The present study was conducted in Prathima Institute of Medical Sciences, Karimnagar, Telangana State, India, amongst 436 students from Telangana state, aged between 18-22 years. After obtaining Institutional Ethics Committee clearance and informed consent from the participants, foot length, foot breadth and Bi-malleolar breadth were recorded and foot index was also calculated. The data was then subjected for statistical analysis using SPSS version 21. Results: The mean values of Foot length, Foot breadth, and Bi-malleolar breadth were found to be significantly higher in males than females. The average foot index in males and females were 43.465 and 41.595 respectively. Prediction of gender with logistic regression equations using multiple parameters was found to be better than that with individual parameters. Background: Physiological changes in the foot may be influenced by external factors such as shoe types or demographic parameters, leading to podiatric conditions in adulthood. The aim of this study was to assess the changes in morphological measurements of the feet of boys and girls during childhood and adolescence. Methods: A total of 1678 Ecuadorian children aged 8 to 17 years participated in the study. The length, width, and height of the foot were analyzed using a 3D scanner to obtain the arch height ratio for the diagnosis of pediatric flat foot. Results: Statistical differences were observed for lengths, widths, and perimeters of the foot in boys aged 5 to 15–16 years and girls aged 5 to 12–13 years. Differences in the height of the navicular bone were found in all age groups, with changes from 2.8 to 4.1% in boys and from 1.3 to 1.5% in girls. The greatest differences between boys and girls of the same age were found at 14 years old onwards. The highest prevalence of flat foot was found in 8-year-old girls (64.9%) and in 12-year-old boys (82.5%). Conclusions: The feet of Ecuadorian children develop progressively during childhood and adolescence. Boys presented with longer and wider feet than girls of the same age. Context: To investigate the effects of midfoot joint mobilization and a 1-week home exercise program, compared with a sham intervention, and home exercise program on pain, patient-reported outcomes, ankle-foot joint mobility, and neuromotor function in young adults with chronic ankle instability. Design: Crossover clinical trial. Methods: Twenty participants with chronic ankle instability were instructed in a stretching, strengthening, and balance home exercise program and were randomized a priori to receive either midfoot joint mobilizations (forefoot supination, cuboid glide, and plantar first tarsometatarsal) or a sham laying of hands on the initial visit. Changes in foot morphology, joint mobility, strength, dynamic balance, and patient-reported outcomes assessing pain, physical, and psychological function were assessed pre to post treatment and 1 week following post treatment. Participants crossed over to receive the alternate treatment and were assessed pre to post treatment and 1 week following. Linear modeling was used to assess changes in outcomes. Results: Participants demonstrated significantly greater perceived improvement immediately following midfoot mobilization in the single assessment numeric evaluation (sham: 5.0% [10.2%]; mobilization: 43.9% [26.2%]; β: 6.8; P < .001; adj R²: .17; Hedge g: 2.09), and global rating of change (sham: -0.1 [1.1]; mobilization: 1.1 [3.0]; β: 1.8; P = .01; adj R²: .12; Hedge g: 0.54), and greater improved 1-week outcomes in rearfoot inversion mobility (sham: 4.4° [8.4°]; mobilization: -1.6° [6.1°]; β: -6.37; P = .01; adj R²: .19; Hedge g: 0.81), plantar flexion mobility (sham: 2.7° [6.4°]; mobilization: -1.7° [4.3°]; β: -4.36; P = .02; adj R²: .07; Hedge g: 0.80), and posteromedial dynamic balance (sham: 2.4% [5.9%]; mobilization: 6.0% [5.4%]; β: 3.88; P = .04; adj R²: .10; Hedge g: 0.59) compared to the sham intervention. BACKGROUND: Occupational foot-transmitted vibration (FTV) exposure is common in industries like mining, construction, and agriculture, often leading to acute and chronic injuries. Vibration assessments require technical expertise and equipment which can be costly for employers to perform. Alternatively, researchers have observed that self-reported discomfort can be used as an effective indicator of injury risk. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of standing FTV exposure on self-reported ratings of discomfort, and whether these subjective ratings differed by body area and exposure frequency. METHODS: Participants (n = 30) were randomly exposed to standing FTV at six frequencies (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 Hz) for 20–45 seconds. Following each exposure, participants rated discomfort on a scale of 0–9 in four body areas: head and neck (HN), upper body (UB), lower body (LB), and total body. RESULTS: Results indicated that participants experienced the most discomfort in the LB at higher frequencies (p < 0.001), consistent with the resonance of foot structures. The HN discomfort tended to decrease as the exposure frequency increased, although not statistically significant (p > 0.0167). The UB discomfort remained relatively low across all frequencies. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests a potential connection between resonant frequencies and discomfort, potentially indicating injury risk. Although self-reported discomfort is insufficient for directly assessing injury risk from FTV, it provides a simple method for monitoring potential musculoskeletal risks related to vibration exposure at resonant frequencies. While professional vibration assessment remains necessary, self-reported discomfort may act as an early indicated of vibration-induced injuries, aiding in implementing mitigation strategies. The 6-item Foot Posture Index (FPI-6) is a reliable tool for the evaluation of foot deformities. Our aim was to translate and cross-culturally validate the FPI-6 for use in French-speaking countries and to determine the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the French version. Cross-cultural adaptation was performed according to guidelines. Two clinicians assessed the FPI-6 in 52 asymptomatic individuals. We evaluated intra- and inter-rater reliability with the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), correlations (p-value < 0.05) and Bland-Altman plots. Standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC95) were determined. For the cross-cultural adaptation, we modified several items of the FPI-6 user guide and added footnotes to ensure correct interpretation. ICC of the total FPI-6 scores were 0.94 to 0.96 for the intra- and inter-rater reliability for dominant and non-dominant lower limb. Correlations were significant (p < 0.001); r 0.88 to 0.92. Total score SEM was 0.68 to 0.78 and MDC95 was 1.58 to 1.82. Intra- and inter-rater reliability of this French version of the FPI-6 was excellent for the total score and good to excellent for each item. The French FPI-6 can be used in French-speaking countries. The identification of SEM and MDC scores is useful for clinical interpretation. Background. Clinicians employ foot morphology assessment to evaluate the functionality of the method and anticipate possible injuries. This study aims to correlate static foot posture and the dynamic barefoot evaluation in a sample of healthy adult participants. Methods. The foot posture was evaluated using the Foot Posture Index-6 (FPI-6) and the dynamics were evaluated through baropodometric examination. Two operators independently assessed the participants' foot posture through FPI-6, and then a dynamic evaluation was performed by asking them to walk 8 times across a platform. One hundred participants (mean age: 32.15 ± 7.49) were enrolled. Results. The inter-rater agreement between the two assessors was found to be excellent. The majority of the feet belonged to the 0 < FPI < 4 class (32%), followed by the 4 < FPI < 8 (31%) and the FPI > 8 ranges (19.5%). Our "area of contact" analysis showed a significant poor correlation between FPI and total foot, midfoot, and the second metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) (−0.3 < r < 0). Regarding "force" parameters, the analysis showed a poor correlation between the midfoot, hallux, and the second toe (−0.2 < r < 2); finally the "pressure" analysis showed a poor correlation between FPI, the fourth MTPJ, and the second toe (−0.2 < rs < 0.3) and a moderate correlation between the hallux (r = 0.374) and the fifth MTPJ (r = 0.427). This study aimed to investigate the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) with gastrocnemius (GCM) strength exercise on foot morphology in patients with stroke. Herein, 31 patients with chronic stroke meeting the study criteria were enrolled and divided into two groups; 16 patients were randomized to the gastrocnemius neuromuscular electrical stimulation (GCMNMES) group, and 15 patients to the conventional neuromuscular electrical stimulation (CNMES) group. The GCMNMES group conducted GCM-strengthening exercise with NMES. CNMES group conducted NMES at paretic tibialis anterior muscle with ankle dorsiflexion movement. These patients underwent therapeutic interventions lasting 30 min/session, five times a week for 4 weeks. To analyze changes in foot morphology, 3D foot scanning was used, while a foot-pressure measurement device was used to evaluate foot pressure and weight-bearing area. In an intra-group comparison of 3D-foot-scanning results, the experimental group showed significant changes in longitudinal arch angle (p < 0.05), medial longitudinal arch angle (MLAA) (p < 0.01), transverse arch angle (TAA) (p < 0.01), rearfoot angle (RA) (p < 0.05), foot length (FL) (p < 0.05), foot width (FW) (p < 0.05), and arch height index (AHI) (p < 0.01) of the paretic side and in TAA (p < 0.05) and AHI (p < 0.05) of the non-paretic side. The CNMES group showed significant changes in TAA (p < 0.05) and FW (p < 0.05) of the paretic side and TAA (p < 0.05) and AHI (p < 0.05) of the non-paretic side. An inter-group comparison showed significant differences in MLAA (p < 0.05) and RA (p < 0.05) of the paretic side. In an intra-group comparison of foot pressure assessment, the experimental group showed significant differences in footprint area (FPA) (p < 0.05) of the paretic side and FPA symmetry (p < 0.05). The CNMES group showed a significant difference in only FPA symmetry (p < 0.05). An inter-group comparison showed no significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05). Background: The biomechanics of the hindfoot in ankle osteoarthritis (OA) are not yet fully understood. Here, we aimed to identify hindfoot motion in a gait analysis using a multi-segment foot model (MFM) according to ankle OA stage and the presence of subtalar compensation defined by hindfoot alignment. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records, plain radiographs, and gait MFM data of 54 ankles admitted to our hospital for the treatment of advanced ankle OA. Spatiotemporal gait parameters and three-dimensional motions of the hindfoot segment were analyzed according to sex, age, body mass index, Takakura classification, and the presence of subtalar compensation. Twenty ankles were categorized as compensated group, and 34 ankles as decompensated group. Results: No spatiotemporal gait parameters differed significantly according to the presence of subtalar compensation or ankle OA stage. Only normalized step width differed significantly (P = 0.028). Average hindfoot motion (decompensation vs. compensation) did not differ significantly between the sagittal and transverse planes. Graphing of the coronal movement of the hindfoot revealed collapsed curves in both groups that differed significantly. Compared with Takakura stages 3a, 3b, and 4, cases of more advanced stage 3b had a smaller sagittal range of motion than those of stage 3a (P = 0.028). Coronal movement of the hindfoot in cases of Takakura stage 3a/3b/4 showed a relatively flat pattern. Conclusions: The spatiotemporal parameters were not affected by the hindfoot alignment resulting from subtalar compensation. The sagittal range of hindfoot motion decreased in patients with advanced ankle OA. Once disrupted, the coronal movement of the subtalar joint in ankle OA did not change regardless of ankle OA stage or hindfoot compensation state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Accessory and sesamoid bones are hidden anatomical structures that fulfil a wide variety of functions in the human body. Therefore, studying the nature, formation and dimensions of these structures is of great importance for the medical literature. In our study, we aimed to measure the presence and area (size) of these ossicles. Material and Method: Our study was performed retrospectively on the images of individuals who applied to Ordu University and whose radiological images were obtained. The presence of accessory and sesamoid ossicles (present/absent) and their sizes (measured using the PACS system) were evaluated on radiographs and Computed Tomography (CT) images. The results of the ossicles were divided into gender, age, and bilateral groups. Statistical analyzes were performed with the SPSS program. Results: The most common and largest accessory ossicles in the foot were os peroneum (18.2%), os naviculare accessoria (17.4%), os trigonum (12.1%) and os intermetatarsarum (7.8%). Sesamoid ossicles at the level of the first metatarsophalangeal (mtp) joint of the foot and the first metacarpopgalangeal (mcp) joint of the hand were found to be 100% common. The second most common sesamoid bone in the hand and foot was at the fifth mtp (22.22%) and mcp (68.53%) joints. In the hand, the most common accessory ossicles were os triangulare (6.08%), os radiale externum (2.60%) and os centrale (1.73%). Accessory ossicles (fabella: 19%, cyamella: 17.5%) were found in 25.5% of the knee. Conclusion: Accessory and sesamoid ossicles are most commonly found in the hand, foot, and knee. The presence and size of these ossicles can be both beneficial and harmful. Sesamoids provide mechanical benefit, whereas accessory ossicles can be mistaken for fractures and may lead to unnecessary medical conditions. Background: Currently, more than 150 surgical techniques have been described for the treatment of hallux valgus. The abundance of techniques indicates that there is no technique that has been designated as a gold standard. In recent years, a particular interest in the use of minimally invasive techniques has grown. The aim of this study was to prospectively compare clinical, radiologic, and postoperative outcomes between the MICA technique and open chevron technique over a 1-year follow-up period. Methods: Between January 2016 and August 2020, data were prospectively collected from consecutive patients preoperatively and at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 12 months following minimally invasive chevron and Akin (MICA) or open chevron osteotomies. Radiographic outcomes were measured using weightbearing radiographs preoperatively and at 3 and 12 months postoperatively. Clinical outcomes were measured using the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS), Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ), VAS (visual analog scale), Foot Function Index (FFI), Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS), and Euro-QoL-5D (EQ5D) questionnaires. Results: Of the 68 patients, 42 patients (62%) underwent a MICA surgery and 26 patients (38%) underwent open chevron osteotomy. Both groups showed significant improvement in HVA, IMA, and DMAA at the 1-year follow-up. Our findings show that both clinical and radiologic outcomes of the MICA technique are comparable to the conventional open technique. No significant differences were found in clinical outcomes (VAS, AOFAS, MOXFQ, FFI, and FAOS), complication rate, and operative times. Background: Imaging diagnosis plays a fundamental role in the evaluation and management of injuries suffered in sports activities. Objective: To analyze the differences in the thickness of the Achilles tendon, patellar tendon, plantar fascia, and posterior tibial tendon in the following levels of physical activity: persons who run regularly, persons otherwise physically active, and persons with a sedentary lifestyle. Design: Cross-sectional and observational. Participants: The 91 volunteers recruited from students at the university and the Triathlon Club from December 2016 to June 2019. The data were obtained (age, body mass index, and visual analog scale for quality of life together with the ultrasound measurements). Results: Tendon and ligament thickness was greater in the runners group than in the sedentary and active groups with the exception of the posterior tibial tendon. The thickness of the Achilles tendon was greater in the runners than in the other groups for both limbs (P =.007 and P =.005). This was also the case for the cross-sectional area (P <.01) and the plantar fascia at the heel insertion in both limbs (P =.034 and P =.026) and for patellar tendon thickness for the longitudinal measurement (P <.01). At the transversal level, however, the differences were only significant in the right limb (P =.040). Conclusion: The thickness of the Achilles tendon, plantar fascia, and patellar tendon is greater in runners than in persons who are otherwise active or who are sedentary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Estimation of stature from measurements of different human parts is a significant aspect of forensic medicine and forensic osteology to identify unknown individuals. Stature is dependent on several variables including genetics, race, age, geographical location, and climate conditions, so it is necessary to define a robust relationship for different people to aid in the identification of individuals. The current study was carried out to test a correlation between stature and foot parameters in a population from Najafabad, Iran. Methods: A total of 206 volunteer adults comprising 106 males and 100 females between the ages of 19 and 38 years were recruited for the study, and measurements of stature, foot length, foot width, medial arch height, lateral malleolus height, medial malleolus height, and navicular height were recorded. Linear regression models were used to estimate stature. Results: The results indicated a positive correlation between stature and foot measurements. Among all parameters, the left foot length (LFL) and right foot width showed the most (r=0.819) and the least (r=0.551) relationship with stature, respectively. A strong correlation between stature and foot dimensions was identified that could add a further dimension to the identification of individuals from skeletal parts. Objective: This study examines the effect of the lower limb misalignment and its possible compensatory effect on plantar pressure in a normal population. The aim of this paper is to present a structured method for the analysis of posture and its changes using a standardized digital photography technique and plantar pressure measuring device. Design: Cohort. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: A total of 200 adult volunteers between 18 and 22 years of age who had no current symptoms of pain and foot or ankle pathology participated in the study. Main Outcome Measures: The gold standard measure of lower limb alignment with weight-bearing status is the mechanical axis and their angles using Image J software. Structural and functional measurements of the same foot were taken using a plantar pressure measuring device. In this study, 5 alignment (thigh, knee, leg, ankle, and foot) characteristics were measured on the lower limb using the 2 techniques, and, additionally, the foot contact area, peak pressure, foot axis, rearfoot angle, and subtalar joint flexibility score were analyzed in 10 different regions of the foot. Results: This study has shown a reasonable correlation between digitalized measurements and plantar pressures values. Quadriceps angle affected midfoot impulse, foot axis angle, subtalar joint minimum angle, and rearfoot angle positively. Subtalar joint flexibility scores were analyzed in 10 different regions of the foot. There was a positive correlation between rearfoot angle and quadriceps angle (P= .009, r= .261). Results of both methods show that they endorse each other. Conclusions: The posture of the standing feet may have influence on lower limb alignment. Currently, there are no studies carried out by using digital photogrammetry and foot scan. The authors claim that patient-friendly digital photogrammetry would have a positive contribution to the monitoring of patients, even including new ones in the treatment programs, reducing any possible loss in the personal and national economy. This study aimed to compare the foot muscle morphology and foot posture between healthy adults and lifesavers in sandy beach sports. The participants included 15 lifesaver athletes and 15 healthy adults. Using a non-contact three-dimensional foot measurement device, the foot length, width, and arch height of the right foot were measured while standing and sitting without back support, and the transverse arch length ratio and arch height index were subsequently calculated. Muscle cross-sectional area was measured using an ultrasound imaging device. Muscle cross-sectional areas, arch height, foot width, arch height index, and transverse arch length ratio were larger in the lifesaver than in the healthy adult group. Lifesavers had higher arches and more developed intrinsic and extrinsic muscles than healthy adults. Background Intrinsic foot muscle (IFM) weakness can result in reduced foot function, making it crucial for clinicians to track IFM strength changes accurately. However, assessing IFM strength can be challenging for clinicians, as there is no clinically applicable direct measure of IFM strength that has been shown to be reliable and valid with the foot on the ground. Purpose The purpose was to investigate the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of a novel, budget-friendly IFM dynamometer and determine its agreement with a handheld dynamometer (HHD). The researchers also examined correlations of foot morphology and activity level to IFM strength. Study design Descriptive Laboratory Study Methods Two assessors measured IFM strength of 34 healthy volunteers (4 male, 30 female; age=21.14±2.57, height=164.66 ±7.62 cm, mass=64.45±11.93 kg) on two occasions 6.62±0.78 days apart with the novel dynamometer to assess intra- and inter-rater reliability. The HHD was used to measure IFM in the first session in order to assess validity. Results For the novel dynamometer, intra- and inter-rater reliability was moderate-to-excellent (ICC = 0.73 - 0.95), and the majority of the strength tests were within the 95% limits of agreement with the HHD. Wider foot morphology and a higher number of days walking over the prior seven days had small but significant correlations with IFM strength (dominant foot r = 0.34, non-dominant foot r = 0.39; r = -0.33, -0.39 respectively). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of specialized Kyokushin karate exercises on the activity of leg muscles and the height of the medial longitudinal arch in adolescent girls with foot pronation. Methods: This study recruited twenty-four adolescent girls with foot pronation who voluntarily agreed to participate and were randomly assigned to either a training group (n=12) or control group (n=12). The training program consisted of eight weeks of specialized Kyokushin karate exercises. The fibularis longus, tibialis anterior, and lateral gastrocnemius muscles activity was measured during single-leg landing using surface electromyography. The medial longitudinal arch height was measured using the navicular drop test. All statistical analyses, including independent and paired t-tests, were conducted using SPSS software, version 26 at a significance level of 0.05. Results: The results showed that following eight weeks of specialized Kyokushin karate exercises, there was a significant increase in the activity levels of the tibialis anterior (P=0.005) and lateral gastrocnemius (P=0.04) muscles in the training group compared to the control group. However, there was no significant change in the activity of the fibularis longus muscle in the training group compared to the control group (P>0.05). Within the training group, there was a significant increase in the activity of all three measured muscles (fibularis longus, P=0.009; tibialis anterior, P=0.008; and lateral gastrocnemius, P=0.008) from post-test to pre-test (P<0.05). Additionally, the study found that the amount of navicular drop in the training group was significantly reduced compared to the control group (P=0.04) after eight weeks of training Conclusion: This study demonstrated that eight weeks of specialized Kyokushin karate exercises resulted in a significant increase in the activity levels of the tibialis anterior and lateral gastrocnemius muscles in adolescent girls with foot pronation. These exercises also improved the height of the medial longitudinal arch, indicating a potential solution for correcting flat feet. Background: Foot malalignment can augment the risk of lower-extremity injuries and lead to musculoskeletal disorders. This study aimed to clarify the contribution of rearfoot alignment to plantar pressure distribution and spatiotemporal parameters during gait in healthy adolescent athletes. Methods: This retrospective study included 39 adolescent athletes who were divided into the rearfoot eversion and control groups according to a leg heel angle of 7°. A total of 78 legs were analyzed (45 and 33 legs in the rearfoot eversion [women, 53.3%] and control groups [women, 48.5%], respectively). Gait was assessed using an in-shoe plantar pressure measuring system and a wearable inertial sensor. Results: The foot plantar pressure distribution in the hallux was higher in the rearfoot eversion group than that in the control group (p = 0.034). Spatiotemporal parameters showed that the foot pitch angle at heel strike was significantly larger in the rearfoot eversion group than that in the control group (24.5° vs. 21.7°; p = 0.015). Total sagittal range of motion of the ankle during the stance phase of gait was significantly larger in the rearfoot eversion group than that in the control group (102.5 ± 7.1° vs. 95.6 ± 15.8°; p = 0.020). Logistic regression analysis revealed that plantar pressure at the hallux and medial heel and foot pitch angle at heel strike were significantly associated with rearfoot eversion. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that rearfoot eversion affects the gait patterns of adolescent athletes. Notably, leg heel angle assessment, which is a simple and quick procedure, should be considered as an alternative screening tool for estimating plantar pressure and spatiotemporal gait parameters to prevent sports-related and overuse injuries in adolescent athletes. Background: Foot problems related to diabetes are associated with significant morbidity and mortality and are costly to the health service. Studies suggest that increased plantar pressure is a risk factor for ulceration in susceptible individuals. This feasibility study explored the use of a pressure sensing mat in a clinic setting to identify any patterns that could indicate early risk of foot disease in a diabetes cohort with designated low foot risk. Methods: Static and dynamic pressure measurements were obtained from 54 individuals (27 with, and 27 without diabetes) using a footscan® pressure sensing mat (Gait and Motion Technology Ltd.). Bare foot mid-stride dynamic foot pressure measurements were obtained. Maximum pressure was recorded for 10 anatomical regions of the foot. Results: Left medial heel, left lateral heel and right medial heel measurements in the diabetes group during walking were significantly lower than those in the control group (left medial heel: median 23.2, vs 28.8, P<0.006; left lateral heel: median 21.4, vs 25.1, P<0.021; right medial heel: median 22.8, vs 28.7), s< 0.017. This related to lower pressures in females compared to females without diabetes at these sites. Conclusions: A pressure sensing mat is a portable, simple and time-efficient method to obtain plantar pressure measurements in a clinic setting. The reasons for lower heel pressure values in the diabetes population are unclear although pressure measurements remained in the acceptable range across all areas assessed. More research is required into whether longitudinal plantar pressure measurements could be utilised in routine foot screening in predicting and preventing foot ulceration in diabetes. Background: Overweight (OW) and childhood obesity (OB) may cause foot problems and affect one's ability to perform physical activities. The study aimed to analyze the differences in descriptive characteristics, foot type, laxity, foot strength, and baropodometric variables by body mass status and age groups in children and, secondly, to analyze the associations of the BMI with different physical variables by age groups in children. Methods: A descriptive observational study involving 196 children aged 5–10 years was conducted. The variables used were: type of foot, flexibility, foot strength and baropodometric analysis of plantar pressures, and stability by pressure platform. Results: Most of the foot strength variables showed significant differences between the normal weight (NW), OW and OB groups in children aged between 5 and 8. The OW and OB groups showed the highest level of foot strength. In addition, the linear regression analyses showed, in children aged 5 to 8 years, a positive association between BMI and foot strength (the higher the BMI, the greater the strength) and negative association between BMI and stability (lower BMI, greater instability). Conclusions: Children from 5 to 8 years of age with OW and OB show greater levels of foot strength, and OW and OB children from 7 to 8 years are more stable in terms of static stabilometrics. Background: Medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) in patients with varus knee osteoarthritis (OA) causes changes to ankle and hindfoot alignment. However, the compensatory ability of the ankle and hindfoot varies according to the severity of ankle OA. Purpose: To investigate whether the changes in ankle symptoms and ankle and hindfoot alignments differ after MOWHTO according to the severity of preoperative ankle OA. Study design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: The data of 130 patients who were followed for ≥4 years were reviewed. Patients were classified into 2 groups according to their severity of ankle OA: group 1, modified Kellgren-Lawrence grade 0 and 1; group 2, grade ≥2. Four radiographic parameters were examined to evaluate ankle alignment: tibial plafond inclination, talar tilt, talar inclination, and tibial surface angle. The hindfoot alignment was evaluated using the varus-valgus angle (VVA) of the calcaneus. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to evaluate ankle pain. The patient-reported outcome measure of the knee joint was the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score. Results: There were 110 patients in group 1 and 20 patients in group 2. In group 2, the change in talar inclination after MOWHTO was significantly greater and the changes in tibial plafond inclination, talar tilt, and VVA were significantly smaller compared with in group 1 (all P <.05). Ankle pain VAS scores were more severe in group 2 than in group 1 pre- and postoperatively (all P <.05), and group 2 reported that ankle pain worsened postoperatively (P <.05). In both groups, knee WOMAC scores improved, and there were no differences between groups pre- or postoperatively (all P >.05). A multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that a small VVA change (odds ratio, 0.775; P =.027) and severe OA grade of the ankle joint preoperatively (Kellgren-Lawrence grades 2-4 vs 0 and 1; odds ratio, 4.241 [ P =.046]) predicted increased ankle pain VAS scores after MOWHTO. Conclusion: Although the patient-reported outcome measures for the knee joint improved irrespective of the presence of ankle OA, ankle pain worsened after MOWHTO in patients with ankle OA. Background/Aims: Whole body vibration could benefit functional mobility in people with Parkinson's disease. A preliminary study was undertaken to analyse the acute effect of whole body vibration on unobstructed walking and obstacle circumvention in people with Parkinson's disease. Methods: People with Parkinson's disease and typically healthy individuals as matched controls were divided into four groups with nine individuals in each: experimental or placebo for people with Parkinson's disease and experimental or placebo for the control group. The participants were evaluated in two different gait conditions: unobstructed walking and obstacle circumvention. Then the participants undertook a session of whole body vibration on a KIKOS P201 lateral vibratory platform in two positions: feet shoulder-width apart, and feet shoulder-width apart with slightly flexed knees. The participants were re-evaluated after this session. Results: After whole body vibration, those in the experimental Parkinson's disease group had a reduced co-contraction of the tibialis anterior and the gastrocnemius lateralis muscles during unobstructed walking, whereas the co-contraction of the tibialis anterior and the gastrocnemius lateralis muscles increased in the experimental control group. In addition, those in the experimental control group had reduced stride duration in unobstructed walking and in obstacle circumvention. After the placebo intervention, the co-contraction of the tibialis anterior and the gastrocnemius lateralis muscles increased in all conditions and stride duration was reduced in unobstructed walking. Conclusions: Although whole body vibration had no acute efficiency on gait (unobstructed walking and obstacle circumvention), it can improve other components, such as strength, which could be important for people with Parkinson's disease. The aim of this study was to investigate whether body proportions change as stature increases in elite Spanish athletes. The sample includes a total of 2,030 participants, comprised of 1,357 adult males, and 673 adult females. The male athletes were classified into five groups by stature, and the female athletes were classified separately into four stature groups. Ten anthropometric measurements were collected, and eleven body proportions were calculated. The body proportions with significant differences between stature groups in males were relative arm length (0.53–1.60%), relative forearm length (0.69–2.08%), relative thigh length (1.17–1.56%), relative tibial length (1.37–6.39%), cormic index (−0.94 – −4.49%), Manouvrier index (1.60–9.60%), and crural index (1.05–4.79%). In females, the body proportions with significant differences were relative forearm length (1.43%), relative thigh length (1.94–3.88%), relative tibial length (2.74–4.56%), cormic index (−0.74 – −3.72%), and Manouvrier index (1.97–8.71%). The distal parts of the upper and lower limbs increase proportionally as stature increases, whereas relative hand and foot lengths, which are the most distal parts of the extremities, remain constant in elite athletes. To have biodynamic features, the feet have bones located in a special posture, the joints that keep together those bones, the ligaments that provide linkage to those joints, and tendons of muscles particularly which end the foot. This study aimed to research the morphology of the medial side and plantar ligaments. The study was conducted on a total of 30 feet belonging to 2 women and 13 men cadavers that exist at the Anatomy Department of the Medical Faculty of Uludag University. After the dissections, 61 parameters that belonging to the ligaments and general features of the foot, were evaluated. The statistical analysis of the collected data was evaluated by SPSS 20.0. According to the findings, while the descriptive statistics of the foot and the ligaments related to the foot, the statistically significant difference of any of the parameters wasn't observed when they were compared between the right and left sides of the foot. In terms of the correlative relations, the parameters that showed high correlation were chosen and 28 formulas were developed using regression analysis. We foresee that our findings of the features belonging to normal anatomic structures will deepen our knowledge besides providing important benefits before or during orthopedic and plastic surgery operations related to the region. Also, our findings were discussed by comparing the findings of similar studies belonging to many other researchers in literature, and our study's contribution to the literature was evaluated. Introduction: Commercially available dynamic response (DR) prosthetic feet have unique ankle designs, which provide different degrees of ankle motion. Differences in ankle motion between the prosthetic and anatomical foot creates an asymmetry in the locomotor system and affects its functions of shock absorption, progression, and stabilization. Ankle motion during gait can be assessed by quantifying the center of pressure (CoP) movement during the stance period of gait. Although previous studies have compared gait parameters between DR and non-DR feet, no studies have examined difference in CoP trajectories among common designs of DR feet. Methods : LP-Variflex, Talux, and Variflex prosthetic feet were used as test feet to represent the common DR feet, that is, low-profile (LP), multi-axial (MX), and J-shaped (JS) ankle designs, respectively. Five subjects with unilateral transtibial amputation (TTA), six subjects with unilateral transfemoral amputation (TFA), and three healthy controls participated in the study. Subjects were prosthetic users for at least 18 months and were classified as K-level 3 or K-level 4 functional level. Each subject received standardized functional prosthetic gait training and accommodation with each test foot. For data collection, subjects walked on level ground using standardized shoes and CoP data were collected using in-sole sensors. The testing order of feet was randomized. The A-P and M-L location of CoP was determined at the following gait phases: initial contact (2% of gait cycle), early midstance (15% of gait cycle), terminal stance (35% of gait cycle), preswing (50% of gait cycle), and before toe-off (60% of gait cycle). The maximum A-P and M-L CoP excursion was also calculated. The A-P displacement of the CoP was normalized to the foot length, and the M-L displacement was normalized to the foot width. Analysis of variance was used to calculate differences in CoP between test feet, and a comparison-wise alpha of P < 0.1 was considered as significant. Results : In the TTA group, there was a significant difference between feet in A-P CoP location during early midstance (15% gait cycle). For the MX foot, the CoP was located at 21.3% +/- 3.1% of the foot length, which was significantly greater than the LP and JS feet (15.6% +/- 2% and 14.1% +/- 3.4% foot length, respectively). During the period from terminal stance to toe-off (35%-60% gait cycle), the split keel design of JS and LP feet had greater M-L movement compared with that of the MX foot. In the TFA group, there were no differences in CoP trajectory between test feet. The maximum A-P excursion for all prosthetic feet was significantly greater than control subjects (80.4% +/- 0.5% and 69.1% +/- 2.7% foot length, respectively). The maximum M-L excursion for all prosthetic feet was significantly lesser than control subjects (14% +/- 3.7% and 26.2% +/- 3.7% foot width, respectively). Conclusions : Differences in ankle design among different DR prosthetic feet can influence the asymmetry and functions of the locomotor system. In the TTA group, the MX foot resulted in a faster transition from initial contact to midstance, compared with the JS and LP feet. The split keel design of JS and LP feet closely mimicked the motion of the anatomical foot in late-stance period and provided controlled weight transfer from the prosthetic limb to the intact limb. In the TFA group, ankle design did not have a significant effect on CoP movement. All prosthetic feet had greater A-P CoP excursion and lower M-L excursion compared with the anatomical foot. Lower limb amputation has been associated with secondary impairments such as knee osteoarthritis in the uninvolved limb. Greater knee loading in the frontal plane has been related to severity and rate of progression in knee osteoarthritis. Reduced push-off work from the involved limb can increase uninvolved limb knee loading. However, little is known about specific effects that prosthetic foot damping may have on uninvolved limb loading. We hypothesized that uninvolved limb peak knee internal abduction moment (IAM) and loading rates would be greater when using a high-damping foot compared with a low-damping foot, across walking speeds. Eight healthy, young subjects walked in a prosthesis simulator boot using the experimental feet. Greater uninvolved limb first peak IAM (+16% in fast speed, P = .002; +11% in slow speed, P = .001) and loading rates (+11% in fast speed, P = .003) were observed when using the high-damping foot compared with low-damping foot. Within each foot, uninvolved limb first peak IAM and loading rates had a trend to increase with increased walking speed. Forensic science has made an astonishing progress in the field of forensic science from blood grouping to D.N.A fingerprinting& Anthropometry to Dactylography. Nevertheless, the most commonly used tool for identification beyond the forensic laboratories still remains the same i.e. built, complexion, stature, colour of eye, mole, scar mark etc. Hence, the aim of this current study is to establish a relationship between the dimension of foot and stature estimation. The present study was conducted among 200 medical students, out of which 100 were male students and 100 were female students. All the students were between the age group of 20-30 years. The data was analyzed using S.P.S.S (I.B.M version 20, Armonk, NY, U.S.A). The regression analysis showed that there is significant correlation between the foot parameters and stature. Knowledge about prevalence and etiology of running-related injuries (RRIs) is important to design effective RRI prevention programs. Mental aspects and sleep quality seem to be important potential risk factors, yet their association with RRIs needs to be elucidated. The aims of this study are to investigate the epidemiology of RRIs in recreational runners and the association of mental aspects, sleep, and other potential factors with RRIs. An internet- based questionnaire was sent to recreational runners recruited through social media, asking for personal and training characteristics, mental aspects (obsessive passion, motivation to exercise), sleep quality, perceived health, quality of life, foot arch type, and RRIs over the past six months. Data were analyzed descriptively and using logistic regression. Self-reported data from 804 questionnaires were analyzed. Twenty-five potential risk factors for RRIs were investigated. 54% of runners reported at least one RRI. The knee was the most-affected location (45%), followed by the lower leg (19%). Patellofemoral pain syndrome was the most-reported injury (20%), followed by medial tibial stress syndrome (17%). Obsessive passionate attitude (odds ratio (OR):1.35; 95% confidence interval (CI):1.18-1.54), motivation to exercise (OR:1.09; CI:1.03-1.15), and sleep quality (OR:1.23; CI:1.15- 1.31) were associated with RRIs, as were perceived health (OR:0.96; CI:0.94-0.97), running over 20 km/week (OR:1.58; CI:1.04-2.42), overweight (OR:2.17; CI:1.41-3.34), pes planus (OR:1.80; CI:1.12-2.88), hard-surface running (OR:1.37; CI:1.17-1.59), running company (OR:1.65; CI:1.16-2.35), and following a training program (OR:1.51; CI:1.09-2.10). These factors together explained 30% of the variance in RRIs. A separate regression analysis showed that mental aspects and sleep quality explain 15% of the variance in RRIs. The association of mental aspects and sleep quality with RRIs adds new insights into the multifactorial etiology of RRIs. We therefore recommend that besides common risk factors for RRI, mental aspects and sleep be incorporated into the advice on prevention and management of RRIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the interexaminer and intraexaminer reliability of classification with the Viladot method of plantar impression obtained by means of a footprinting mat. Footprints were taken from 40 participants using a footprinting mat. The images were subjected to analysis by 3 independent examiners. To investigate intraexaminer reliability, the analysis was repeated by 1 of the examiners 1 week later. Excellent intraexaminer reliability was found (κ = 1.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.77-1.0; P <.00). For interexaminer reliability, in the right foot high concordance was found for typical feet (κ p = 0.76; 95% CI, 0.58-0.93; P <.00) and excellent concordance for cavus feet and flat feet (respectively: κ p = 0.86; 95% CI, 0.68-1.0; P <.00; and κ p = 0.81; 95% CI, = 0.63-0.99; P <.00). In the left foot high concordance was observed between the 3 evaluators for typical feet and cavus feet (respectively: κ p = 0.75; 95% CI, 0.57-0.93; P <.00; and κ p = 0.69; 95% CI, 0.51-0.87; P <.00) and excellent concordance for flat feet (κ p = 1.0; 95% CI, 0.82-1.0; P <.00). The Viladot method is reliable for analyses involving 1 or more examiners, presenting excellent intraexaminer reliability and high to excellent interexaminer reliability. The important function of the intrinsic foot muscles is the dynamic stabilization of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA). Several studies have reported that implementing short foot exercise (SFE) and electrical stimulation (ES) amid the intrinsic foot muscles may increase MLA height. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of ES versus SFE on navicular drop (ND), calcaneal pitch angle (CPA), and crosssectional area (CSA) of the abductor hallucis (AbdH) muscle. 20 healthy female subjects were randomly assigned to undergo ES (n=10) or SFE (n=10). SFE performed 30 repetitions whereas 20 min per day for ES, 3 days/week, for 4 weeks. ND, CPA, and the CSA of the AbdH muscle were assessed before and after intervention. The results showed that ES group significantly decreased in ND after training (p<0.05) without significant differences between groups. The CPA is a little change in both groups (SFE = 0.4° and ES = 2.4°; p>0.05). The CSA of the AbdH muscle in both groups was increased (ES =10.93 mm² and SFE=7.44 mm²; p<0.05) with no significant difference between ES and SFE. These results demonstrated that ES and SFE alone could improve intrinsic foot muscle size. Nevertheless, ES tended to increase MLA more than SFE alone. Subtalar arthroereisis has been accounted for as a minimally invasive, successful and generally safe technique in the treatment of flatfoot in children. The primary aim of our study was to evaluate the subtalar extra-articular screw arthroereisis (SESA) in children with flexible flatfoot clinically and radiologically. This prospective case series study included 84 feet of 42 patients who underwent Subtalar Extra-articular Screw Arthroereisis (SESA) due to symptomatic flexible flatfoot. This study included 26 males (62 ℅) and 16 females (38℅). The mean age at surgery was (9.92 years); range from (7–15 years).The average follow up period was 29.1 months (ranged from 2 to 48 months). The values of the pre- and post-SESA weight bearing X-ray angles were 149 ± 6 and 127° ± 8° respectively for the Costa-Bartani angle, 43° ± 8° and 25° ± 6° respectively for the lateral T-1stMT angle and 26° ± 7° and 8° ± 3° respectively for calcaneal pitch angle 6° ± 4° and 15° ± 5°. The average AOFAS preoperative score was 68.7 ± 5.7 (Range, 58 to 78) whereas post operative AOFAS score was 97.4 ± 2.3 (range, 94 to 100). All data were analyzed statistically with graph instat. With final conclusion that SESA is an optimal technique for the correction of flexible flatfoot (FFF) as it is simple and can be performed rapidly and is effective procedure in reducing pain and restoring medial longitudinal arch in children with flexible flat foot. BACKGROUND: Evaluation of the effect of a pad on foot morphologies in patients with medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) requires more reliable and objective methods, rather than conventional subjective observations. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of pads on foot morphologies during quiet standing in athletes with MTSS. METHODS: We measured three-dimensional foot morphologies in 30 feet with MTSS and 40 healthy feet. RESULTS: The analysis showed that Hallux valgus degree, calcaneal angle, arch height, and arch height ratio differed significantly as a result of the pad support, compared to no pad support in the MTSS group. The pad support only resulted in significant differences in arch height, compared to no support in the control group. Furthermore, thumb side angle, calcaneal angle, and arch height ratio were significantly different between the MTSS and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our study results suggest that changes in foot morphologies because of the use of a pad can be measured objectively in patients with MTSS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Jones fractures are relatively common in soccer players and require an extended recovery period because this type of fracture has a high incidence of delayed union, nonunion, and refracture. There has been some previous research on risk factors for Jones fracture, but no study has yet investigated the effect of the length of the fifth metatarsal bone and the positional relationship of the articular surface of the fifth metatarsal bones and the tarsal bones. Clarification of the characteristics of the foot structure that predispose soccer players to Jones fracture may aid in the prevention of this injury. Purpose: To investigate the association between Jones fracture and foot structure as assessed with a mapping system on weightbearing dorsoplantar and lateral foot radiographs. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: We used a mapping system to evaluate the radiographs of 60 feet from 30 university soccer players with Jones fractures and a control group of 60 feet from 60 male university soccer players without Jones fracture. The groups were compared regarding the length of the fifth metatarsal and the positions of the metatarsal and tarsal bones. Results: Analysis of weightbearing dorsoplantar foot radiographs showed that the fifth metatarsal was significantly longer and that its proximal tip was positioned more proximally in the Jones fracture group as compared with the control group. Analysis of weightbearing lateral foot radiographs showed that the reference points for the medial arch were significantly higher in the Jones fracture group than in the control group. Conclusion: This study indicated that the proximally longer fifth metatarsal may cause greater stress at the base of the fifth metatarsal bone because the lever arm becomes long. In addition, high medial longitudinal arch may contribute to increased load on the lateral side of the foot. Background: Computerized baropodometry, a posturographic recording technique used in the diagnosis and assessment of plantar pressure, which records the pressure points exerted by the body on the plantar surface, is an accurate, objective and quantitative examination. Its record is used in the diagnosis and evaluation of plantar pressure, both in static and dynamic positions. Objective: Analyze the baropodometric profile of patients in a physiotherapy clinic. Methods: A cross-sectional study of documentary character of baropodometry exams registered in the database of a physiotherapy clinic in Teresina (PI), carried out from January 2015 to December 2018. Totaling 193 exams, which include the types of feet, peak plantar pressure and correlation between peak plantar pressur e with age, weight, height and BMI. The collected data were analyzed statistically by the software Win Track version 12.0, and presented through tables and figures. In this research, all ethical precepts were carried out in accordance with the resolution of the National Health Council and was approved by the ethics committee. Results: There was a higher prevalence of hollow feet (96.89%), showing a greater occurrence of displacement of the center of gravity posteriorly to the right (46.11%), it was found that there was no satisfactory correlation of anthropometric parameters with peak plantar pressure (p>0.05). Conclusion: It was possible to observe that the examinations evaluated showed a higher prevalence of hollow feet and center of gravity posteriorized to the right. Context: Altered foot dynamics due to malalignment of the foot may change plantar-pressure properties, resulting in various kinds of overuse injuries. Objective: To assess the effect of foot characteristics on plantar-pressure-related measures such as maximum pressure, maximum pressure-time, and pressure-time integral underneath the medial aspect of the foot during running. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: 8 men and 17 women. Main Outcome Measures: Static non-weight-bearing rear-foot and forefoot alignment and navicular drop were measured. Plantar-pressure data were collected while subjects jogged at 2.6 m/s on a treadmill. Maximum pressure, time to maximum pressure, and pressure-time integral of the medial side of the foot were extracted for data analysis. Multiple-regression analysis was used to examine the effect of arch height and rear-foot and forefoot alignment on maximum pressure and pressure-time integral in the medial side of the foot. Results: In the medial rear-foot and midfoot regions, only rear-foot alignment had a significant effect on the variance of maximum pressure and pressure-time integral. There were no significant difference effects in the medial forefoot region. Conclusion: Rear-foot alignment was found to be a significant predictor of maximum plantar pressure and pressure-time integral in the medial rear-foot and midfoot regions. This indicates that control of rear-foot alignment may help decrease plantar pressure on the medial region of the foot, which may potentially prevent injuries associated with excessive rear-foot eversion. Introduction: The foot is an important element of the human motor system. It is a single mechanism of propulsion and amortisation. Sports people, football players in particular, are especially prone to limb loading. In this discipline, the first contact with the sport as well as training begin at a very young age. In order to prevent traumas and injuries among young players, it is important to assess their foot arch. Material and methods: A group of 30 players aged 13-18 who played football at the Progres Sports Academy in Cracow and at the lower- and upper-secondary schools in Cracow under the patronage of Marcin Gortat were tested. The tests involved the podoscopic evaluation of both feet, the test of both feet on a tensometric mat and a survey. To assess the longitudinal foot arch, Clarke's angle was applied in the authors' own tests. The transverse arch was evaluated using the Wejsflog index. Results: For the overwhelming majority of the persons tested, the most common type of longitudinal arch was flat foot. Only a scant minority had a tendency towards hollow foot. The most common injuries among the examined footballers included muscle pulling and tearing as well as sprains and overloading. Most players suffered injuries of thigh muscles, knee joints, tarsal joints and feet. Consciousness disturbances are the most common posttraumatic complications. The purpose of this study was to compare the single and combined effects of nature sounds and foot sole reflexology massage on level of consciousness in traumatic comatose patients. This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in 2 teaching hospitals in an urban area of Iran. Samples were 120 traumatic comatose patients who were randomly assigned into control, nature sounds, foot reflexology massage, and nature sounds plus foot sole reflexology massage groups. Patients in all groups received routine care. Interventions were performed twice a day for 2 weeks, each time for 30 minutes. The patients' level of consciousness was assessed using the Glasgow Coma Scale before, 1 week, and 2 weeks after the intervention. The groups had no significant differences in the mean scores of the consciousness level before, 1 week after, and the last day of the intervention. Also, there was a significant difference in the number of patients who regained full consciousness ( P= .001) in the intervention groups compared with the control group. Significant differences in the number of days of consciousness were reported in at least one of the groups compared with other groups ( P= .001). This difference was significant in the control group compared with the foot reflexology massage group ( P= .032), as well as the nature sounds plus foot sole reflexology massage group ( P= .001). Objectives: This study compared foot arch height, plantar fascia thickness, a range of motion assessments of the ankle joint, strength of the ankle joint, plantar pressure, and balance between obese and normal weight young adults. Methods: Fifty-two participants were required for the present study design to achieve 80% power, 0.8 effect size (η2), and an alpha level of 0.05. The participants were categorized to normal weight or obese groups based on BMI (≤ 24 kg/m2 and ≥ 25 kg/m², respectively). The foot and ankle disability index and Sport survey were completed by the participants before the measurements. Foot arch height was measured using the navicular drop test, and plantar fascia thickness was measured using ultrasound. Plantar pressure and balance tests were also conducted, followed by ankle joint range of motion and strength tests. Results: Foot arch height and plantar fascia thickness was significantly higher in the obese group compared with the normal weight group (p < 0.01). There were significant differences in eversion of ankle strength, plantar pressure in the big toe and heel and anterior-posterior balance between normal and obese weight groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Obese young adults had more abnormalities in the medial longitudinal arch, plantar fascia, and plantar pressure as well as weakened ankle eversion strength and balance problems compared with the normal weight group. Background The medial longitudinal arch of the foot is a variable structure, and a decrease in its height could affect several functions and increase the risk of injuries in the lower limbs. There are many different techniques for evaluating it. Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlations of the Navicular Drop Test, several footprint parameters, and the Foot Posture Index-6 in people with a low medial longitudinal arch. Intrarater reliability and interrater reliability were also estimated. Design This was a repeated-measures, observational descriptive study. Methods Seventy-one participants (53.5% women; mean age = 24.13 years; SD = 3.41) were included. All of the parameters were collected from the dominant foot. The correlation coefficients were calculated. The reliability was also calculated using the intraclass correlation coefficient, 95% CI, and kappa coefficient. Results Statistically significant correlations were obtained between the Navicular Drop Test and the footprint parameters, with r absolute values ranging from 0.722 to 0.788. The Navicular Drop Test and the Foot Posture Index-6 showed an excellent correlation (Spearman correlation coefficient = 0.8), and good correlations (Spearman correlation coefficient = |0.663–0.703|) were obtained between the footprint parameters and the Foot Posture Index-6. Excellent intrarater reliability and interrater reliability were obtained for all of the parameters. Limitations Radiographic parameters, the gold standard for evaluating the medial longitudinal arch height, were not used. In addition, the results of this research cannot be generalized to people with normal and high medial longitudinal arches. Conclusions In participants with a low medial longitudinal arch, the Navicular Drop Test showed significant correlations with footprint parameters; correlations were good for the arch angle and Chippaux-Smirnak Index, and excellent for the Staheli Index. The Foot Posture Index-6 showed an excellent correlation with the Navicular Drop Test and a good correlation with the footprint parameters evaluated. All of the parameters showed high reliability. Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation among the navicular drop test, the arch angle, the Staheli index and the Chippaux-Smirak index. The reliability and the correlation among the footprint parameters were also estimated. Methods A cross-sectional study (n = 86; 59.3% women; 27.8 years, standard deviation: 4.8 years) was carried out. The navicular drop test was evaluated and footprint parameters using a plantar pressure platform were recorded in the dominant foot. Pearson correlation coefficients, intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement, and minimum detectable change were calculated. Results Both intrarater and interrater reliability were excellent for all the parameters evaluated (intraclass correlation coefficients > 0.880). Statistically significant correlations existed between the navicular drop test and footprints parameters (arch angle = 0,643; Staheli index = 0.633; Chippaux-Smirak index = 0.614). The footprint parameters had excellent correlation with each other (0.838-0.881). The navicular drop test and the footprint parameters studied were reproducible and thus had excellent reliability. Conclusion The correlations obtained between the navicular drop test and the footprint parameters evaluated were good. The navicular drop test appears to be a reproducible, valid, and simple test for evaluating medial longitudinal arch height, having fewer disadvantages than using footprint parameters. Objective: To investigate the reliability of normalised truncated navicular height (NTNH) as a clinical measure of static foot posture in children. Methods: A cross-sectional study of a random sample of 300 school-aged children 6-12 years with mean ± SD of (9.44 ± 1.76) years. Two raters independently recoded the NTNH for each participant. Intrarater and interrater reliability of NTNH was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: NTNH demonstrated excellent intrarater reliability (ICC = 0.98-0.99) and interrater reliability (ICC = 0.98). Objectives: This research was conducted to analyze the effect of foot reflexology on the anxiety levels of women during labor. Design, setting and subjects: The study was conducted as a semiexperimental study. It was conducted with 154 nulliparous pregnant women who applied to a maternity unit of a state hospital in the north-western part of Turkey to give birth. Interventions: Foot reflexology was applied once to the pregnant women in the experimental group when cervical dilation was 3–4 cm. The treatment was applied to the right foot and left foot reflex points for 15 min, for a total of 30 min. The data in the study were collected using the “Pregnant Women Introductory Information Form” and the “Spielberger State-trait Anxiety Inventory” (STAI TX-1). In evaluating the data, number, percentage, Chi-square, independent samples t-test, and repeated measure analysis of variance test were used. Main outcome measures: The mean scores of the STAI TX-1 were used to analyze the results. Results: The mean STAI TX-1 scores were measured before reflexology, in the latent and active phases of labor and early in postpartum period (four times in total). The mean STAI TX-1 scores were higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p < 0.001). The mean STAI TX-1 scores postreflexology application (when cervical dilation was 3–4 cm) and during the active phase of the labor (when cervical dilation was 6–8 cm) of the pregnant women in the experimental group were lower than those of the control group (respectively p = 0.010, p < 0.001). In the experimental group, there was no statistically significant difference between the mean STAI TX-1 scores pre- and postreflexology (p = 0.820). The mean STAI TX-1 scores in the early postpartum period were similar in the experimental and control groups (p = 0.080). Conclusion: Foot reflexology was found to have a positive effect in lowering the total anxiety scores of the pregnant women. Reflexology is a noninvasive and economical method, which may be used by health professionals to reduce problems during labor. Enhanced physical performance following whole-body vibration (WBV) has been attributed to increased muscle activity; however, few studies have measured the mechanisms underlying these changes. The objective of this study was to measure the responsiveness of the Ia pathway as well as contractile properties in 16 young adults (24±2 years, eight men, eight women) following repeated bouts of acute WBV (45 Hz, 2 mm). Hoffman reflexes (H-reflex), compound muscle action potentials (M-wave), and twitch contractile properties were measured prior to and immediately following five 1-minute WBV exposures, and at 3, 5, 10, and 20 minute post-WBV. M-wave and H-reflex amplitudes decreased by 8% ( P<.001) and by 46% ( P<.05), respectively, whereas peak twitch torque decreased by 9% ( P<.01) and rate of twitch torque development slowed 8% ( P<.05). Percent voluntary activation and maximal plantar flexor torque were unchanged as a consequence of WBV ( P>.05). In response to acute WBV, the root mean square of the soleus electromyography signal (EMGRMS) increased by 8%, while the EMGRMS of the lateral gastrocnemius increased by 3% ( P<.05). These data indicate that the responsiveness of the Ia pathway is diminished and contractile function is impaired immediately following WBV, and that the neural mechanisms underlying improved performance following WBV lie in alternative hypotheses possibly involving spindle disfacilitation or Golgi afferent modulation.
