We identified data-driven multidimensional physical activity (PA) profiles using several novel accelerometer-derived metrics. Participants aged 75, 80, and 85 (n = 441) wore triaxial accelerometers for 3–7 days. PA profiles were formed with k-means cluster analysis based on PA minutes, intensity, fragmentation, sit-to-stand transitions, and gait bouts for men and women. Associations with physical capacity and life-space mobility were examined using age-adjusted general linear models. Three profiles emerged: "Exercisers" and "actives" accumulated relatively high PA minutes, with actives engaging in lighter intensity PA. "Inactives" had the highest activity fragmentation and lowest PA volume, intensity, and gait bouts. Inactives showed lower scores in physical capacity and life-space mobility compared with exercisers and actives. Exercisers and actives had similar physical capacity and life-space mobility, except female exercisers had higher walking speed in the 6-min walk test. The aims of the current study were to analyze the association between the barriers to and changes in physical activity levels and sedentary behavior, as well as to examine whether these barriers change over time in patients with peripheral artery disease. In this longitudinal study, we assessed 72 patients (68% men; 65.7 ± 9.2 years). Physical activity was measured over a 7-day period using an accelerometer, and data were collected on time spent in sedentary activities, low-light physical activities, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activities. Personal and environmental barriers to physical activity were collected using yes or no questions. Assessments were repeated in the same patients after 27 months (95% confidence interval [26, 28] months). Most barriers remained stable in these patients; however, those who reported lack of money experienced an increase in sedentary behavior (β = 392.9 [159.7] min/week, p =.02) and a decrease in low-light physical activity (β = −372.4 [140.1] min/week, p =.02). These findings suggest that patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease typically exhibit stable barriers over time, and individuals reporting lack of money demonstrated a decrease in low-light physical activity and an increase in sedentary behavior after 27 months. Purpose: To investigate the validity of the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C) to assess the moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) level of children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV and propose cut-points, with accelerometer measures as the reference method. Method: Children and adolescents, aged 8–14 years (mean age = 12.21 y, SD = 2.09), diagnosed with HIV by vertical transmission, participated in the study. MVPA was investigated through the PAQ-C and triaxial accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X+). Receiver operating characteristic curve and sensitivity and specificity values were used to identify a cut-point for PAQ-C to distinguish participants meeting MVPA guidelines. Results: Fifty-six children and adolescents participated in the study. Among those, 16 met MVPA guidelines. The PAQ-C score was significantly related to accelerometry-derived MVPA (ρ =.506, P <.001). The PAQ-C score cut-point of 2.151 (sensitivity = 0.625, specificity = 0.875) was able to discriminate between those who met MVPA guidelines and those that did not (area under the curve = 0.751, 95% confidence interval, 0.616–0.886). The aim of this investigation was to quantify professional rugby union player activity profiles after the most intense (peak) passages of matches. Movement data were collected from 30 elite and 30 subelite professional rugby union athletes across respective competitive seasons. Accelerometer-derived PlayerLoad and global navigation satellite system–derived measures of mean speed and metabolic power were analyzed using a rolling-average method to identify the most intense 5- to 600-second passages (ie, worst-case scenarios) within matches. Player activity profiles immediately post their peak 5- to 600-second match intensity were identified using 5 epoch duration-matched intervals. Mean speed, metabolic power, and PlayerLoad declined sharply (∼29%–86%) after the most intense 5 to 600 seconds of matches. Following the most intense periods of rugby matches, exercise intensity declined below the average match-half intensity 81% of the time and seldom returned to or exceeded it, likely due to a host of individual physical and physiological characteristics, transient and/or accumulative fatigue, contextual factors, and pacing strategies. Typically, player exercise intensities after the most intense passages of matches were similar between match halves, positional groups, and levels of rugby competition. Accurate identification of the peak exercise intensities of matches and movement thereafter using novel methodologies has improved the limited understanding of professional rugby union player activity profiles following the worst-case scenarios of matches. Introduction: The effect of displayed step count in smartwatches on the accuracy of daily step-count estimation and the potential underlying psychological factors have not been revealed. The study aimed for the following: (i) To investigate whether the counting and reporting of daily steps by a smartwatch increases the daily step-count estimation accuracy and (ii) to elucidating underlying psychological factors. Methods: A total of 34 healthy men and women participants wore smartwatches for 4 weeks. In week 1 (baseline), 3 (follow-up 1), and 8 (followup 2), the number of smartwatch displayed steps was blinded for each participant. In week 2 (Intervention), the number of steps was not blinded. During baseline and follow-ups 1 and 2, the participants were instructed to estimate their number of steps four times per day. During the 4-week washout period between follow-ups 1 and 2, no feedback was provided. The Body Awareness Questionnaire and the Body Responsiveness Questionnaire (BRQ) were used to elucidate the psychological facets of the assumed estimation accuracy. Results: The mean absolute percentage error between the participants' steps count estimations and measured steps counts were 29.49% (at baseline), 0.54% (intervention), 11.89% (follow-up 1), and 15.14% (follow-up 2), respectively. There was a significant effect between baseline and follow-up 1 [t (61.7) = 3.433, p < 0.001] but not between follow-up 1 and followup 2 [t (60.3) = -0.288, p = 0.774]. Only the BRQ subscale "Suppression of Bodily Sensations" appeared to be significant at the Baseline (p = 0.012; Bonferroni adjusted p = 0.048) as a factor influencing step-count estimation accuracy. Conclusion: The counting and reporting of daily steps with a smartwatch allows improving the subjective estimation accuracy of daily step counts, with a stabilizing effect for at least 6 weeks. Individuals working in the field of dentistry have a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) owing to monotonous and one-sided physical exertion. Inertial measurement units (IMU) are increasingly shifting into focus for assessing postural risk at work. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of an ergonomic lecture and training intervention on postural risk and MSDs in dental assistant students using inertial sensor-based motion capture (MoCap). Eighteen female dental assistant students (age: 19.44 ± 6.83 years; height: 164.59 ± 5.32 cm; weight: 64.88 ± 16.52 kg; BMI: 19.70 ± 4.89 kg/m2), randomly divided into intervention (n = 9) and control (n = 9) groups, participated in the present study. The participants completed the Nordic Questionnaire on MSD prevalence, after which a 90 s MoCap with Xsens IMU was performed. A lecture on ergonomics was provided, followed by a five-week intervention for the intervention group. Follow-up assessments were performed, and 5- and 18-week follow-up MSD questionnaires were administered. Mixed analysis of variance (MANOVA) showed a significant difference in the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and part-scores of the upper arm and wrist. Despite a reduction in MSDs, no significant differences in the time of measurement and groups were detected after the five-week training intervention and the 18-week follow-up questionnaire. A targeted ergonomics lecture was effective for dental assistant students, and technologies such as IMU improved workplace ergonomics in dentists. Background: Opt2Move is a theory-guided moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) promotion trial that uses multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) methodology to evaluate the individual and combined effects of four intervention components in a full factorial experiment among young adult cancer survivors (YACS; N = 304). All participants will receive the core mHealth MVPA intervention, which includes a Fitbit and standard self-monitoring Opt2Move smartphone application. YACS will be randomized to one of 16 conditions to receive between zero and four additional components each with two levels (yes v. no): E-Coach, buddy, general mindfulness, and MVPA-specific mindfulness. Objective: The primary aim is to determine the individual and combined effects of the components on MVPA post-intervention (12-weeks) and at 24-week follow-up. The secondary aim is to examine how changes in MVPA are associated with patient-reported outcomes, light-intensity activity, sedentary time, and sleep duration and quality. Potential mediators and moderators of component effects will also be examined. Results: Results will support the selection of a package of intervention components optimized to maximize MVPA to be tested in a randomized controlled trial. Conclusion: Opt2Move represents the first systematic effort to use MOST to design an optimized, scalable mHealth MVPA intervention for YACS and will lead to an improved understanding of how to effectively change YACS' MVPA and ultimately, improve health and disease outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate sleep‐wake behavior and gain insights into perceived impairment (sleep, fatigue, and cognitive function) of athletes competing in two international multi‐day adventure races. Twenty‐four athletes took part across two independent adventure races: Queensland, Australia and Alaska, USA. Individual sleep periods were determined via actigraphy, and racers self‐reported their perceived sleep disturbances, sleep impairment, fatigue and cognitive function. Each of these indices was calculated for pre‐, during‐ and post‐race periods. Sleep was severely restricted during the race period compared to pre‐race (Queensland, 7:46 [0:29] vs. 2:50 [1:01]; Alaska, 7:39 [0:58] vs. 2:45 [2:05]; mean [SD], hh:mm). As a result, there was a large cumulative sleep debt at race completion, which was not 'reversed' in the post‐race period (up to 1 week). The deterioration in all four self‐reported scales of perceived impairment during the race period was largely restored in the post‐race period. This is the first study to document objective sleep‐wake behaviors and subjective impairment of adventure racers, in the context of two geographically diverse, multi‐day, international adventure races. Measures of sleep deprivation indicate that sleep debt was extreme and did not recover to pre‐race levels within 1 week following each race. Despite this objective debt continuing, perceived impairment returned to pre‐race levels quickly post‐race. Therefore, further examination of actual and perceived sleep recovery is warranted. Adventure racing presents a unique scenario to examine sleep, performance and recovery. Highlights: Adventure, or expedition, racing is an ultra‐endurance sport, carried out over multiple days, which presents an extreme test of athletic performance under conditions of severe sleep restriction and deprivation. However, limited research has been conducted to examine sleep and perceived impairment of athletes who choose this sport.Using actigraphy, the team‐based nature of adventure racing was evident with severe sleep restriction synchronized between team members during the race.There was significant sleep debt accumulated across the race and was not recovered by the end of the measurement period. Furthermore, perceived impairment returned to pre‐race levels quickly after race completion, despite the remaining sleep debt objectively observed.This study posits that adventure racing presents a unique context to study sleep, performance, and recovery. Introduction: Physical activity is known to positively influence cognitive performance. For adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the relationship between physical activity levels and cognitive performance is unknown. This cross‐sectional study aimed to determine if cognitive performance [as measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)] of people living in the community with MCI is associated with their physical activity levels or sedentary behaviour. Methods: ActivPAL™ accelerometers were used to objectively measure physical activity and sedentary behaviour for seven full days. Cognitive performance was measured using the MoCA. Consumer and Community Involvement: No involvement other than as research participants Results: Eighty‐two participants from the Balance on the Brain randomised controlled trial were included. Most participants were retired (88%), with 33 (40%) reporting a fall in the last year. The median MoCA score was 24 (IQR 22–26). Participants achieved a mean of 6296 (±2420) steps per day and were sedentary for 10.6 (±2) hours per day. The only physical activity outcomes that had a fair, positive correlation were moderate‐ to vigorous‐intensity physical activity measures of total stepping time and total number of steps (with a cadence of ≥100 steps/min) with the orientation MoCA domain score (r(82) = 0.36, p ≤ 0.001 and r(82) = 0.37, p ≤ 0.001, respectively). Higher total sedentary time had a weak, positive correlation with better visuospatial/executive performance (r(82) = 0.23, p = 0.041). The orientation outcomes remained significant when analysed in an adjusted logistic regression model. Conclusion: This study found that performance in the MoCA orientation domain had a fair‐positive correlation with moderate‐intensity physical activity (i.e., stepping time and step count with a cadence of ≥100 steps/min) as measured by a thigh‐worn accelerometer for community‐dwelling older adults with MCI. When considering the relationship between cognitive domains and sedentary behaviour, consideration may be needed regarding whether cognitive enhancing activities (such as crosswords and other brain games) are being performed, which may confound this relationship. Regular moderate to vigorous physical activity is known to help memory and thinking skills. Moderate physical activity includes brisk walking, lawn mowing and water aerobics. Vigorous physical activity includes running, fast‐paced swimming, cycling and brisk walking up hills and steps. For adults with mild cognitive impairment (i.e., a person who is starting to have trouble with their memory, but the difficulty is not yet advanced enough to be diagnosed as dementia), we did not know how their level of engagement with physical activity may be related to their memory and thinking skills. A strength of this study is that we had a large population of 82 people living in the community with mild cognitive impairment to review. Background: Both kinematically-aligned (KA) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and bicruciate stabilized (BCS) TKA aim to reproduce the physiological knee kinematics. In this study, we compared the femoro-tibial component rotational mismatch between patients who underwent modified KA-TKA and those who received guided-motion BCS-TKA, and its influence on the clinical outcomes. Methods: In this retrospective study, 77 consecutive patients were included and divided into two groups: subjects who underwent modified KA-TKA with Persona (KA Group; n = 42) and those who received BCS-TKA with JOURNEY II (BCS group; n = 35). Range of motion, the 2011 Knee Society Score (KSS), the rotational alignment of the femoral and tibial components, and the correlations between the rotational mismatch and the 2011 KSS subscales were examined. Results: The postoperative objective knee indicators (P = 0.0157), patient satisfaction (P = 0.0039) and functional activity scores (P = 0.0013) in the KA group were significantly superior to those in the BCS group 1 year postoperatively. There was no significant difference between the two groups observed in the rotational mismatch. In the BCS group, significant negative correlations were identified between the rotational mismatch and objective indicators, patient satisfaction, and functional activity scores but not in the KA group. Conclusions: The short-term clinical results following KA-TKA showed superior objective knee indicators, patient satisfaction and functional activity scores. A negative correlation was observed between component rotational mismatch and the 2011 KSS subscales in the BCS group, compared to no relationship found between the two in the KA group. Monitoring training load is essential for optimizing the performance of athletes, allowing practitioners to assess training programs, monitor athlete progress, and minimize the risk of injury and overtraining. However, there is no universal method for training load monitoring, and the adoption of wearable global positioning system (GPS) and accelerometer technology in team sports has increased the volume of data and, therefore, the number of possible approaches. This survey investigated the usage, applications, and understanding of this technology by team sports practitioners. Seventy-two practitioners involved in team and athlete performance monitoring using GPS and accelerometer technology completed the survey. All respondents reported supporting the use of GPS technology in their sport, with 70.8% feeling that GPS technology is important for success. Results showed that 87.5% of respondents use data from wearable technology to inform training prescription, although only 50% use the data to influence decisions in competition. In addition, results showed that GPS metrics are used more than accelerometer-derived metrics; however, both are used regularly. Discrepancies in accelerometer usage highlighted concerns about practitioners' understanding of accelerometer-derived metrics. This survey gained insight into usage, application, understanding, practitioner needs, and concerns and criticisms surrounding the use of GPS and accelerometer metrics for athlete load monitoring. Such information can be used to improve the implementation of this technology in team sport monitoring and highlight gaps in the literature that will help to design future studies to support practitioner needs. Objectives: To explore the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive functions in older adults using NHANES, a national US population study dataset, and to explore the causal association with Mendelian randomization (MR) using the UK Biobank. Methods: First, an observational study was conducted with the NHANES database with participants ≥60 years. Sleep duration was measured with accelerometers for 7 consecutive days. Participants were divided into habitual short sleep (<7 h) and long sleep (>9 h) groups. Cognitive functions were measured with the CERAD Word Learning sub-set, Animal Fluency, and Digit Symbol Substitution test (DSST). Multivariate regression models were used to explore relationships between sleep duration and cognitive functions. Second, bidirectional MR was conducted with data for self-reported sleep duration, which came from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) comprising 446,118 adults from the UK Biobank, and general cognitive performance, which was obtained from a recent GWAS study (N = 257,841). Inverse-variance weighted (IVW) was used as the primary estimation of the outcome. Results: In the observational study, 2687 participants were included. Sleep duration was associated with cognitive functions in a non-linear way. Habitual long sleep (>9°h) was associated with lower scores on DSST (OR = 0.01, p =.003) in the fully-adjusted model. The association between habitual short sleep and cognitive functions was insignificant. For the MR, genetically predicted lower general cognitive performance was causally associated with a higher prevalence of habitual short sleep (OR = 0.97, p = 5.1 × 10−7) and long sleep (OR = 0.97, p = 8.87 × 10−16). Discussion: Short and long sleep duration might be both causally associated with worse outcomes of cognitive functions in older adults, highlighting the importance of maintaining sleep health. This study adopted a quasi-experimental design to explore the effects of fundamental movement skill intervention on the acquisition and retention of physical activity levels and health-related fitness in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In the experiments, 11 children received fundamental motor skill training (12 weeks, 60 min/session, 4 times/week), and 10 children maintained traditional physical activity. Assessments were performed using an ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometer, health-related fitness pre–post intervention, and 1-month follow-up tests. The sedentary time during physical activity was significantly decreased (p = 0.01), and there were large changes in health-related physical fitness indicators, including significantly improved body composition (body mass index, F(1,19) = 8.631, p = 0.03, partial η2 = 0.312), muscle strength and endurance (sit-ups, F(1,19) = 3.376, p = 0.02, partial η2 = 0.151 and vertical jumps, F(1,19) = 5.309, p = 0.04, partial η2 = 0.218), and flexibility (sit and reach, F(1,19) = 36.228, p = 0.02, partial η2 = 0.656). Moreover, the follow-up tests showed that the children's sedentary time continued to reduce, and the muscle strength and endurance (sit-ups, F(1,19) = 4.215, p = 0.01, partial η2 = 0.426) improved continuously after the intervention. Based on this study, actionable and regular fundamental movement skill programs can be provided in the future as an effective way to achieve the healthy development goals of children with ASD. Background: Accelerometers were traditionally worn on the hip to estimate energy expenditure (EE) during physical activity but are increasingly replaced by products worn on the wrist to enhance wear compliance, despite potential compromises in EE estimation accuracy. In the older population, where the prevalence of hearing loss is higher, a new, integrated option may arise. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the accuracy and precision of EE estimates using an accelerometer integrated into a hearing aid and compare its performance with sensors simultaneously worn on the wrist and hip. Methods: Sixty middle-aged to older adults (average age 64.0 ± 8.0 years, 48% female) participated. They performed a 20-min resting energy expenditure measurement (after overnight fast) followed by a standardized breakfast and 13 different activities of daily living, 12 of them were individually selected from a set of 35 activities, ranging from sedentary and low intensity to more dynamic and physically demanding activities. Using indirect calorimetry as a reference for the metabolic equivalent of task (MET), we compared the EE estimations made using a hearing aid integrated device (Audéo) against those of a research device worn on the hip (ZurichMove) and consumer devices positioned on the wrist (Garmin and Fitbit). Class-estimated and class-known models were used to evaluate the accuracy and precision of EE estimates via Bland-Altman analyses. Results: The findings reveal a mean bias and 95% limit of agreement for Audéo (class-estimated model) of −0.23 ± 3.33 METs, indicating a slight advantage over wrist-worn consumer devices (Garmin: −0.64 ± 3.53 METs and Fitbit: −0.67 ± 3.40 METs). Class-know models reveal a comparable performance between Audéo (−0.21 ± 2.51 METs) and ZurichMove (−0.13 ± 2.49 METs). Sub-analyses show substantial variability in accuracy for different activities and good accuracy when activities are averaged over a typical day’s usage of 10 h (+61 ± 302 kcal). Discussion: This study shows the potential of hearing aid-integrated accelerometers in accurately estimating EE across a wide range of activities in the target demographic, while also highlighting the necessity for ongoing optimization efforts considering precision limitations observed across both consumer and research devices. Background: The sedentary aspects of work have been associated with increased health risks. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of high intensity interval training (HIIT) and increased steps on anthropometric, body mass, and body composition changes over a 12-week period. Methods: 12 sedentary, obese, body mass index (BMI) = 32.98 ± 3.21 kg/m2, adult (46.10 ± 9.56 years), females volunteered for the study and were randomly assigned into one of the two groups, the HIIT group and the STEP group. During the 12-week study, all participants' movements were monitored during their workday, via an accelerometer, a Movband™, 5 days/week. Findings: The HIIT group (n = 5) engaged in structured exercise (~15.0 ± 3.5 minutes), defined as total body moves which consisted of eight different routines: upper and lower extremity, two cardio segments, two total body, yoga, and abdominal exercises. The STEP group (n = 7) averaged ~7,000 steps/day throughout 12 weeks. Pre- and post-program measurements included: five anthropometric measurements (biceps, waist, abdomen, hips, and thigh), along with body mass and body composition measures: relative (%) body fat via dual x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, fat mass, fat-free mass, and lean mass. Conclusions: Statistical significance was determined among participants for biceps, hips, and thigh measurements along with body mass and body composition changes for improved health. Application to Practice: This work is suggestive that a physical activity intervention integrated into the workplace via work processes and/or structured exercise is supportive in reducing anthropometric and body composition measurements, while changing body mass, to increase health and reduce obesity-related chronic disease risks in sedentary women. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) attached to the distal tibia are a validated method of measuring lower-extremity impact accelerations, called tibial accelerations (TAs), in runners. However, no studies have investigated the effects of small errors in IMU placement, which would be expected in real-world, autonomous use of IMUs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a small proximal shift in IMU location on mean TAs and relationships between TAs and ground reaction force loading rates. IMUs were strapped to 18 injury-free runners at a specified standard location (∼1 cm proximal to medial malleolus) and 2 cm proximal to the standard location. TAs and ground reaction forces were measured while participants ran at self-selected and 10% slower/faster speeds. Mean TA was lower at the standard versus proximal IMU location in the faster running condition (P =.026), but similar in the slower (P =.643) and self-selected conditions (P =.654). Mean TAs measured at the standard IMU explained more variation in ground reaction force loading rates (r2 =.79−.90; P <.001) compared with those measured at the proximal IMU (r2 =.65−.72; P <.001). Purpose: To quantify match load associated with padel and compare responses with both singles and doubles tennis. Methods: On separate days, 12 participants (7 men and 5 women) played 60-minute padel (PADEL), singles tennis (SINGLES), and doubles tennis (DOUBLES) simulated games. Participants wore a 10-Hz GPS/100-Hz triaxial accelerometer unit and heart-rate monitor. Exercise-related sensations and blood lactate concentration were monitored every 20 minutes. Match-play characteristics (temporal structure) and shot selection were derived from video analysis. Vertical jump ability was assessed before and after each game. Results: Heart rate, exercise-related sensations (overall perceived exertion and limb discomfort), and physical load (total distance covered, PlayerLoad, acceleration density and load) for SINGLES were higher compared with DOUBLES and PADEL (all P ≤.05). Blood lactate concentrations remained low (1–2 mmol·L−1) and did not differ between conditions. Effective playing time (P <.001) was lower in SINGLES and DOUBLES compared with PADEL. The number of forehands (P =.002) and backhands (P <.001) was greater for SINGLES than for DOUBLES and PADEL. The number of volleys/smashes and lobs (P <.05) was greater for PADEL compared with SINGLES and DOUBLES. Performance for squat, countermovement, and multirebound jumps was similarly reduced below baseline after match play (P <.05), independent of condition. Conclusion: Padel imposes a unique match load on players that is different from singles tennis and more closely resembles that of doubles tennis. Purpose: To identify associations between amount of school recess provision and children's physical activity (PA), weight status, adiposity, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Method: Data from 6- to 11-year-old participants (n = 499) in the 2012 National Youth Fitness Survey were analyzed. Parents/guardians reported children's PA levels and recess provision, categorized as no/minimal (9.0%), low (26.1%), medium (46.0%), or high (18.9%). Children wore a wrist-worn accelerometer for 7 days and completed anthropometric measurements. Fitness was assessed using grip strength and treadmill, pull-up, and plank tests. Cross-sectional linear and logistic regression compared outcomes across levels of recess provision adjusting for the survey's complex sampling design. Results: Children with high provision of recess were 2.31 times more likely to meet PA guidelines according to parent report than those with no/minimal recess. Accelerometer-measured PA followed a more U-shaped pattern, wherein PA was higher in children with high, compared to low, recess provision but comparable to those with no/minimal recess provision. There were no associations with weight status, adiposity, or fitness. Conclusion: Current recess recommendations (20 min·d−1) may be insufficient as 30 minutes per day of recess was associated with a 2-fold greater likelihood of achieving recommended PA levels. Background Acetabular dysplasia (AD) causes pain, limited function, and development of early hip osteoarthritis. Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a surgical treatment for AD that aims to reposition the acetabulum to reduce pain and improve function. Purpose To examine pain recovery and physical activity (PA) before and during the six months after PAO. Study Design Case series, prospective Methods Individuals with AD scheduled for PAO were enrolled. Pain intensity was evaluated before PAO and at one week and one, three, and six months following PAO. PA levels was evaluated before and six months following PAO using accelerometers (time spent in sedentary behavior, light PA, moderate-to-vigorous PA [MVPA], and daily steps) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ; time spent in walking and in MVPA). Pain improvements was examined over time following PAO using a repeated-measures one-way ANOVA as well as improvements in PA levels before and six months after PAO using paired-sample t tests. In addition, time spent in MVPA was qualitatively summarized at each time point (before and six months after PAO) measured by both the accelerometers and IPAQ. Results Out of 49 screened participants, 28 were enrolled, and 23 individuals (22 females; age=23.1±7.9 years) completed both study visits. Compared to pre-PAO pain, participants reported significant improvements in pain at one month and onward following PAO (p<0.011). However, PA levels at six months following PAO did not differ from pre-PAO PA levels (p>0.05). Qualitatively, participants reported spending more time in MVPA recorded by the IPAQ (pre-PAO=73.3±150.2 mins/day; six-months after PAO=121.2±192.2 mins/day), compared with MVPA recorded by accelerometers (pre-PAO=22.6±25.2 mins/ day; six-months after PAO=25.0±21.4 mins/day). Conclusions Individuals with AD reported significant pain reduction at one month and up to six months after PAO, but PA levels did not change six months after PAO compared to baseline testing. Future studies should consider examining longitudinal pain recovery and PA improvements over longer periods of time with larger samples of individuals with AD undergoing PAO and identifying modifiable factors to minimize pain and increase PA participation. Purpose: Dyadic synchrony is positively associated with social competence. Although children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and children diagnosed with Down Syndrome (DS) both have trouble with dyadic synchrony, the origin of their difficulties is fundamentally different. In this mixed method study, we investigated differences in dyadic synchrony and social behavior between children diagnosed with ASD and DS. Methods: Twenty-seven children diagnosed with ASD (10 cisgender females; Mage = 10.98 years; SD = 2.21) and twenty-five children diagnosed with DS (11 cisgender females; Mage = 11.91 years; SD = 2.27) performed a collaborative drawing task with a parent in which they had to synchronize their drawing movements. We continuously tracked their dominant hand movements using wearable accelerometers, and performed Cross-Recurrence Quantification Analysis to extract synchrony measures. Additionally, we compared the social behaviors (interpersonal synchrony, emotion regulation, and social cognition, motivation, and confidence) of these children using quantitative parental questionnaires. Results: Parent-child synchrony measures were significantly higher for children diagnosed with ASD. Yet, parents were significantly more positive about the social behaviors of children diagnosed with DS. No significant correlation between the synchrony and questionnaire measures was found. Conclusion: While children diagnosed with ASD synchronize better during a collaborative task, the social behavior of the children diagnosed with DS (including social synchrony) is more positively evaluated by their parents. Exploring the temporal and bi-directional relationship between device-based measures of physical activity and sleep in ambulatory children with cerebral palsy (CP). 24-hour activity data were collected from children with CP (n = 51, 43% girls, mean age (range); 6.8 (3–12) years; Gross Motor Function Classification System levels I to III). Nocturnal sleep parameters and daily physical activity were measured for seven consecutive days and nights using ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers. Linear mixed models were constructed to explore the relationships between sleep and activity. Light and moderate-to-vigorous activity were negatively associated with sleep efficiency (SE) (resp. p = 0.04, p = 0.010) and total sleep time (TST) (resp. p = 0.007, p = 0.016) the following night. Sedentary time was positively associated with SE and TST the following night (resp. p = 0.014, p = 0.004). SE and TST were positively associated with sedentary time (resp. p = 0.011, p = 0.001) and negatively with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (resp. p < 0.001, p = 0.002) the following day. Total bedtime and TST were negatively associated with light physical activity (resp. p = 0.046, p = 0.004) the following day. The findings from this study suggest that ambulatory children with CP may not sleep better after physical activity, and vice versa, indicating that the relationship is complex and needs further investigation. The use of device-based accelerometry is a feasible method to measure 24-hour activity patterns with sleep and physical activity in ambulatory children with cerebral palsy. The relationships between sleep and physical activity in children with cerebral palsy are not as expected based on patterns shown in peers with typical development. Introduction: Stroke survivors may not maintain gains made in gait performance after task-oriented circuit training. Behavior change interventions may enhance the long-term adoption of physical activity. This study uses a co-design methodology to develop an intervention and tools to facilitate physical and exercise therapists in supporting an active lifestyle in stroke survivors, which is defined as a lifestyle that integrates daily walking performance with day-to-day activity. Objectives: (1) To describe the insights generated during the co-design process; and (2) To describe the tools that were developed during the co-design process. Methods: A multidisciplinary team consisting of staff members of the Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy, exercise and physical therapists specializing in neurorehabilitation and conducting task-oriented circuit class training in primary care settings or day therapy centers within residential care facilities, stroke survivors and their carers, experts in measuring movement behavior in stroke survivors, a company specializing in manufacturing sensors and related software, behavior change specialists, and co-designers all collaborated in a three-stage (define, develop, and deliver) co-design process. Results: In the design process, the team iteratively developed a prototype accelerometer system for measuring walking performance with a feedback function for stroke survivors and their therapists and a prototype toolbox for therapists to support the facilitation of behavior change in their stroke survivors. Discussion: This study shows how co-design can be applied to develop interventions for stroke survivors. Both the prototype system for measuring walking performance and the toolbox incorporate behavior change techniques to support a more physically active lifestyle in stroke survivors. This study examined the bivariate association between fatigue and depression symptoms and physical activity behavior in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). The sample of adults with MS completed the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and wore a waist mounted accelerometer during waking hours for 7 days. We categorized participants as having elevated fatigue and depression based on cut-points for the FSS (i.e., 4+ as indicative of severe fatigue) and the HADS (i.e., 8+ as indicative of elevated depressive symptoms). We used a two-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to examine the contribution of fatigue and depression to volume and pattern of sedentary, light (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Results indicated no bivariate association between fatigue and depression and measures of physical activity behavior. The MANOVA indicated there was a significant association between fatigue and MVPA (F = 2.30, p = 0.032) and steps/day (F = 13.6, p < 0.001), independent of depression symptoms. There was no association between depression symptoms and physical activity behavior. This study demonstrated an interrelation between fatigue symptoms and MVPA and steps/day in MS, independent of depression symptoms, and this should be considered in the future design and delivery of physical activity interventions in MS. Fatigue and depression are prevalent and burdensome symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). These symptoms can collectively worsen psychological and functional outcomes in MS. Fatigue symptoms may impact ambulatory physical activity to a greater degree than depression symptom status in persons with MS. Objective: Compare the long-term effects of two different individualised physical activity interventions in hip or knee osteoarthritis patients. Design: Randomised, assessor-blinded, controlled trial. Setting: Primary care. Subjects: Patients with clinically verified hip or knee osteoarthritis, <150 min/week with moderate or vigorous physical activity, aged 40–74. Intervention: The advice group (n = 69) received a 1-h information and goalsetting session for individualised physical activity. The prescription group (n = 72) received information, goalsetting, individualised written prescription, self-monitoring, and four follow-ups. Main measures: Physical activity, physical function, pain and quality of life at baseline, 6, 12 and 24 months. Results: There were only minor differences in outcomes between the two groups. For self-reported physical activity, the advice group had improved from a mean of 102 (95% CI 74–130) minutes/week at baseline to 214 (95% CI 183–245) minutes/week at 24 months, while the prescription group had improved from 130 (95% CI 103–157) to 176 (95% CI 145–207) minutes/week (p = 0.01 between groups). Number of steps/day decreased by −514 (95% CI −567–462) steps from baseline to 24 months in the advice group, and the decrease in the prescription group was −852 (95% CI −900–804) steps (p = 0.415 between groups). Pain (HOOS/KOOS) in the advice group had improved by 7.9 points (95% CI 7.5–8.2) and in the prescription group by 14.7 points (95% CI 14.3–15.1) from baseline to 24 months (p = 0.024 between groups). Conclusions: There is no evidence that individualised physical activity on prescription differs from individualised advice in improving long-term effects in patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis. Parent–child patterns in objectively measured movement behaviours were the highlight of this study. A total of 381 families (337 mothers, 256 fathers, 190 daughters, and 191 sons) from 36 randomly selected schools and kindergartens provided valid accelerometer data. Sedentary behaviour and physical activity (PA) were assessed using ActiGraph accelerometers. Spearman's rho was used to evaluate parent–child associations, while logistic regression analysis (the backward LR method) was used to recognize factors related to children's achievement of PA recommendations. Results indicated that girls engaged more in light PA, while boys showed higher levels of moderate and vigorous PA. Mothers spent less time sitting and more time in light PA compared to fathers, resulting in higher total PA levels. Father–son pairs showed a stronger association in total PA than mother–son pairs. Children aged 6–10 years and those with mothers who engaged in more vigorous PA were more likely to meet PA recommendations compared to younger children and those with less active mothers. Early childhood is a crucial time for children to develop their fundamental motor skills (FMS), serving as a foundation for engagement in lifelong physical activity (PA). With increasing concerns over the declining levels of PA and motor competence (MC), the aim of this study was to explore the predictors of PA in children in a play-based curriculum. A secondary purpose was to explore levels of PA and MC during the school day. The final aim was to explore whether there were sex differences. Children (N = 94; Mage = 68.96 months, SD = 8.25) in five classes from four different schools in Wales were tested on the TGMD-2, standing long jump, and MABC-2. Levels of PA were measured using ActiGraph GT3X-BT accelerometers, and 85 children met the wear time criteria. Object control (OC) skills, standing long jump, and age significantly predicted the percentage of time spent performing sedentary behaviours F(10,73) = 3.026, p = 0.003, R 2 = 0.29 (adj R 2 = 0.20) and time spent on MVPA F(10,73) = 3.597, p < 0.001, R 2 = 0.33 (adj R 2 = 0.24). Children spent an average of 48.7% of the school day performing sedentary behaviours and 9.1% performing moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and did not achieve 60 min of MVPA. The MABC revealed that 67% were below the 15th percentile. Girls spent more time than boys performing sedentary behaviours (p = 0.014), and boys spent more time than girls on MVPA (p = 0.004). Boys outperformed girls at OC skills (p < 0.001), while girls outperformed boys at locomotor skills (p < 0.001). These findings reinforce the pivotal role teachers and parents play in providing opportunities for children to be PA. OC skills and jump were positively associated with PA, emphasising the importance of developing FMS in early childhood. There were also sex disparities for both PA and MC, along with low levels of MC, highlighting the need for investing in comprehensive programmes and initiatives that prioritise the development of FMS during early childhood. To investigate a smartphone-enabled quantitative evaluation of anticipatory postural adjustments (APA) during one-leg stance (OLS) movements among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). This cross-sectional study included 10 young controls, 10 older individuals, and 13 individuals with PD. A smartphone and accelerometer were attached to the participants' lower back (L5), and the movements of the lower back toward the stance side during OLS were measured. For acceleration, the time to the peak value in the stance direction (peak latency [PL]) and the amount of displacement to the peak value in the stance direction (peak magnitude [PM]) were analyzed as APA characteristics. Additionally, the measured PL was divided by the PM for each group to obtain the APA ratio (APAr) as a new index. Individuals with PD showed a delayed PL and decreased PM (vs. young controls: p =.002 for PL, p <.001 for PM) (vs. older individuals: p =.022 for PL, p =.001 for PM). The APAr clustered the young controls, older individuals, and individuals with PD. According to the receiver operating characteristic curve the APAr value was 0.95, and individuals in the PD group were identified (i.e. area under the curve: 0.98; sensitivity: 85.0%; specificity: 100%). Moreover the APAr was correlated with severity and balance ability in individuals with PD (p =.015 for NFOG-Q, p =.028 for UPDRS, p =.036 for TUG, p =.015 for Mini-BESTest, p =.018 for OLS time). This smartphone-based evaluation using the APAr index was reflective of disease severity and decreased balance ability among individuals with PD. Background: There is a growing population of survivors of colorectal cancer (CRC). Fatigue and insomnia are common symptoms after CRC, negatively influencing health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Besides increasing physical activity and decreasing sedentary behavior, the timing and patterns of physical activity and rest over the 24-h day (i.e. diurnal rest-activity rhythms) could also play a role in alleviating these symptoms and improving HRQoL. We investigated longitudinal associations of the diurnal rest-activity rhythm (RAR) with fatigue, insomnia, and HRQoL in survivors of CRC. Methods: In a prospective cohort study among survivors of stage I-III CRC, 5 repeated measurements were performed from 6 weeks up to 5 years post-treatment. Parameters of RAR, including mesor, amplitude, acrophase, circadian quotient, dichotomy index, and 24-h autocorrelation coefficient, were assessed by a custom MATLAB program using data from tri-axial accelerometers worn on the upper thigh for 7 consecutive days. Fatigue, insomnia, and HRQoL were measured by validated questionnaires. Confounder-adjusted linear mixed models were applied to analyze longitudinal associations of RAR with fatigue, insomnia, and HRQoL from 6 weeks until 5 years post-treatment. Additionally, intra-individual and inter-individual associations over time were separated. Results: Data were available from 289 survivors of CRC. All RAR parameters except for 24-h autocorrelation increased from 6 weeks to 6 months post-treatment, after which they remained relatively stable. A higher mesor, amplitude, circadian quotient, dichotomy index, and 24-h autocorrelation were statistically significantly associated with less fatigue and better HRQoL over time. A higher amplitude and circadian quotient were associated with lower insomnia. Most of these associations appeared driven by both within-person changes over time and between-person differences in RAR parameters. No significant associations were observed for acrophase. Conclusions: In the first five years after CRC treatment, adhering to a generally more active (mesor) and consistent (24-h autocorrelation) RAR, with a pronounced peak activity (amplitude) and a marked difference between daytime and nighttime activity (dichotomy index) was found to be associated with lower fatigue, lower insomnia, and a better HRQoL. Future intervention studies are needed to investigate if restoring RAR among survivors of CRC could help to alleviate symptoms of fatigue and insomnia while enhancing their HRQoL. This study aimed to reveal the key lifestyle elements that improve physical and mental health in university students by focusing on physical activity, nutrition, and sleep. This cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2021 and December 2021. The participants were 290 first-year students (mean age, 18.63 ±.63 years; age range, 18 to 23; 198 female). The outcomes were daily step counts measured using accelerometers, dietary intake by nutrient category, sleep duration, subjective sleep quality, exercise frequency and duration by exercise type, screen time, depression level, and subjective fatigue by body part. Depression and subjective eye fatigue represent mental and physical health outcomes. Subjective sleep quality predicted depression (β = −1.22, P <.001) and eye fatigue (β = −.23, P <.01) in the path analysis. Participants with higher subjective sleep quality performed more frequent aerobic exercise (P <.01), longer session times of physical relaxation exercise (P <.05), and shorter screen time (P <.05). Subjective sleep quality could be a key factor for high mental and physical health. To describe physical functioning after severe COVID-19-infection. An explanatory sequential mixed method design was used. Thirty-nine participants performed tests and answered questionnaires measuring physical functioning six months after hospitalisation due to COVID-19. Thirty of these participants participated in semi-structured interviews with questions regarding how they perceived their physical functioning and recovery from COVID-19 at 12 months post-hospitalisation. At six months, physical functioning measured via chair stand test and hip-worn accelerometers was lower than normal reference values. There was a reduction in breathing muscle strength. Participants estimated their functional status during different activities as lower compared to those before COVID-19-infection, measured with a patient-specific functional scale. At one year after infection, there were descriptions of a rough recovery process and remaining symptoms. Patients recovering from severe COVID-19 seem to have reduced physical functioning and activity levels, and they perceive their recovery to be slow and difficult. They experienced a lack of clinical support and contradictory advice regarding rehabilitation. Coaching in returning to physical functioning after the infection needs to be better co-ordinated and there is a need for guidelines for health professionals to avoid patients receiving contradictory advice. Coronavirus infection disease-19 (COVID-19) can have a great impact on a person's physical functioning. In the early course of the COVID-19 pandemic there were not any clear guidelines regarding rehabilitation for this group of patients. Background: Esports is competitive video gaming, performed within teams or individually, across multiple genres. Players are required to be sedentary for extended periods and require a high-level of cognitive skills for successful competitive performance. There are conflicting findings within the physical activity research in the esports industry. The aim of this research is to explore self-reported physical activity through accelerometer-assessed physical activity, to gain a better insight into the physical activity behaviours of international e'athletes. Method: Participants (n = 796) across multiple popular esports games, holding any in-game rank, competing at any level, were recruited. The survey consisted of demographic details, esports experience, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Long Form (IPAQ-LF), and Behavioural Regulations towards Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ-3). Within a convenience sample, local intervarsity e'athletes (n = 18) were recruited to wear a wrist-worn accelerometer to measure physical activity for 7-days and then complete the survey. Results from the accelerometers were compared to the survey results to explore physical activity reporting within this population. Results: When comparing IPAQ-LF to accelerometer data, players significantly over-report moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and weekly MET-min− 1 (p =.018, r =.63 and p ≤.001, r =.92). The BREQ-3 showed that e'athletes categorised as high physical activity displayed significantly higher levels of intrinsic motivation, when compared to players categorised as low and moderate physical activity. Conclusions: E'athletes significantly over report physical activity time when measured through the IPAQ-LF, suggesting previous surveys may overestimate physical activity and further research is needed. Given the exponential growth of the industry and the level of physical inactivity, esports may contribute to global physical inactivity levels. Key Points: Despite in-game rank not influencing physical activity time or motivation, higher levels of intrinsic motivation were associated with increased physical activity among e'athletes. This suggests the importance of fostering intrinsic motivation to promote sustained engagement in physical activity within esports communities. Introduction: Wearables are potentially valuable tools for understanding mobility behavior in individuals with neurological disorders and how it changes depending on health status, such as after rehabilitation. However, the accurate detection of gait events, which are crucial for the evaluation of gait performance and quality, is challenging due to highly individual-specific patterns that also vary greatly in movement and speed, especially after stroke. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy, concurrent validity, and test--retest reliability of a commercially available insole system in the detection of gait events and the calculation of stance duration in individuals with chronic stroke. Methods: Pressure insole data were collected from 17 individuals with chronic stroke during two measurement blocks, each comprising three 10-min walking tests conducted in a clinical setting. The gait assessments were recorded with a video camera that served as a ground truth, and pressure insoles as an experimental system. We compared the number of gait events and stance durations between systems. Results and discussion: Over all 3,820 gait events, 90.86% were correctly identified by the insole system. Recall values ranged from 0.994 to 1, with a precision of 1 for all measurements. The F1 score ranged from 0.997 to 1. Excellent absolute agreement (Intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC = 0.874) was observed for the calculation of the stance duration, with a slightly longer stance duration recorded by the insole system (difference of -0.01 s). Bland-- Altmann analysis indicated limits of agreement of 0.33 s that were robust to changes in walking speed. This consistency makes the system well-suited for individuals post-stroke. The test--retest reliability between measurement timepoints T1 and T2 was excellent (ICC = 0.928). The mean difference in stance duration between T1 and T2 was 0.03 s. This study examined the concordance between accelerometry-measured and self-reported physical activity (PA) and sedentary time in adults with autism. Twenty-four participants wore an ActiGraph GT3X + accelerometer for seven consecutive days and completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF) on the last day of their study participation. Bland-Altman plots assessed the magnitude of agreement between the two measures. Nearly 80% of the participants accumulated the recommended ≥ 150 min of moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA)/week, but were also sedentary for over nine hours/day according to accelerometry data. Findings showed that adults with autism tended to overreport MVPA (b = 1.606, p < 0.01) and underreport sedentary time (b = 1.161, p = 0.03) via the IPAQ-SF, as compared to objective measurements. There is a well‐established relationship between physical activity (PA) and physical fitness in children, being the latter an important marker for present and future health; however, there is still insufficient knowledge for the transition from the preschool age to early childhood. Therefore, this study in Swedish children aimed to investigate the estimated effect of meeting the aerobic component of the PA guidelines at 4 and/or 9 years of age on physical fitness measured at 9 years of age. PA was assessed using a wrist‐worn ActiGraph accelerometer and identical data processing in 217 healthy children in Sweden (114 boys and 103 girls). Physical fitness test included cardiorespiratory (20 m shuttle run test), motor (4 × 10 m shuttle run), and muscular fitness (hand grip strength and long jump). A linear mixed model was run, investigating the interaction between meeting the PA guidelines and time (either 4 or 9 years of age) and each fitness component (at 4 and 9). Interactions by sex were also checked. Meeting the PA guidelines consistently (at 4 and 9 years) was significantly associated to better performance in physical fitness parameters for motor fitness (−0.76 s, p < 0.001) and lower body muscular fitness (+4.6 cm; p < 0.001) at 9 years. There was an interaction between meeting the PA guidelines and time point, for cardiorespiratory fitness (+4.58 laps; p < 0.001). Increased physical activity may prevent disease onset and severity in individuals with cardiovascular disease. However, studies evaluating physical activity in people with cardiovascular disease are limited. This prospective observational study aimed to objectively assess the level of physical activity in patients with cardiovascular disease and determine the actual extent of physical activity in their daily lives. Participants aged 20 years or older with cardiovascular disease at a cardiology clinic were included. Physical activity was measured using an activity meter with a three-axis acceleration sensor. Overall, 58 patients were included in the study. Household activities were found to be more frequent sources of physical activity. The step count was related to age and housework, while total physical activity and household activity were related to age and work. Locomotive activity was related to sex and housework. Total physical and household activities tended to decrease with age. These findings indicate the influence of work and household chores on physical activity and suggest that physical activity may be underestimated if household activity is not also assessed. Steps per day were measured by accelerometer for 7 days among 5,545 women aged 63–97 years between 2012 and 2014. Incident falls were ascertained from daily fall calendars for 13 months. Median steps per day were 3,216. There were 5,473 falls recorded over 61,564 fall calendar-months. The adjusted incidence rate ratio comparing women in the highest versus lowest step quartiles was 0.71 (95% confidence interval [0.54, 0.95]; ptrend across quartiles =.01). After further adjustment for physical function using the Short Physical Performance Battery, the incidence rate ratio was 0.86 ([0.64, 1.16]; ptrend =.27). Mediation analysis estimated that 63.7% of the association may be mediated by physical function (p =.03). In conclusion, higher steps per day were related to lower incident falls primarily through their beneficial association with physical functioning. Purpose: The authors examined associations between preschoolers' daily glycemic variability, parents' report of hypoglycemia fear, and preschoolers' daily moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) in 25 families of preschoolers with type 1 diabetes. Methods: Parents completed a valid measure of hypoglycemia fear, and their child wore an accelerometer for up to 7 days. Parents provided glucose data from their child's devices. The authors used multiple regression and multilevel modeling to analyze their data. Results: Preschoolers (mean age 4.2 [1.7] y; 50% boys) engaged in a mean of 154.5 (59.6) and 339.2 (85.1) minutes of MVPA and SB per day, respectively, and parents reported relatively low levels of hypoglycemia worry and avoidance behaviors. Preschoolers' SB (r =.19, P =.02) and MVPA (r = −.20, P =.01) levels were significantly correlated with parental hypoglycemia worry scores but not with parents' hypoglycemia behavior scores (P =.15 and P =.92, respectively). While multilevel models did not show an association between MVPA and preschoolers' glycemic variability, preschoolers who engaged in more daily SB experienced higher glycemic variability (P =.04). Conclusions: Research exploring MVPA, SB, and parental hypoglycemia fear in preschoolers with type 1 diabetes could have important clinical implications because it may reveal modifiable treatment targets that can impact preschoolers' health and activity patterns. Aim: Teaching is known as a high-stress occupation. Managing fatigue and promoting work engagement, teachers' expectations and perceptions can impact work-related stress–recovery–balance and physical activity levels. The main objective of the current study was to investigate the relationship between intrinsic motivational factors and the autonomic nervous system, such as heart rate and heart rate variability regulation, sleep, and physical activity levels. Methods: The research included 66 primary and high school teachers in Tampere, Finland, in 2020–2021. The Reiss Motivation Profile® (RMP) was selected as an instrument to provide a practical approach to understanding people's intrinsic motivators and the effects of those on the Firstbeat®-measured heart rate and heart rate variability, and accelerometry. Stepwise multiple linear regression models were used to assess whether the RMP motives reflected Firstbeat®-measured outcomes. Results: Motives such as Acceptance, Eating, Family, Physical Activity, Power, Tranquillity, and Vengeance were found to have a relationship with Firstbeat®-measured outcomes. An increase in the Physical Activity motive was related to lower stress and less light physical activity. Furthermore, an increase in the Physical Activity motive showed a relationship with better recovery and a higher amount of vigorous physical activity. However, the statistical analysis of heart rate and heart rate variability showed only low explanatory power (R2 = 0.111–0.140) for stress, recovery, and sleep. On the contrary, the explanatory power of measurements related to physical activity and sedentary behavior was higher (R2 = 0.171–0.298). In addition, the need for Acceptance as an important intrinsic motive that may prevent people from vigorous physical activity deserves further research. Conclusion: The results indicated that there are several factors affecting the autonomous nervous system but also behavior. The basic desires explained sedentary and physical activity behavior better than the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. Background: Studies suggest a correlation between excessive sedentary behavior, insufficient physical activity, and an elevated likelihood of experiencing psychiatric disorder. Nonetheless, the precise influence of sedentary behavior and physical activity on psychiatric disorder remains uncertain. Hence, the objective of this research was to investigate the possible causal relationship between sedentary behavior, physical activity, and the susceptibility to psychiatric disorder (depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), utilizing a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. Methods: Potential genetic instruments related to sedentary leisure behaviors were identified from the UK Biobank database, specifically a summary-level genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving 422,218 individuals of European descent. The UK Biobank database also provided the GWAS data for physical activity. Primary analysis was performed using inverse variance weighting (IVW) to assess the causal relationship between sedentary behavior, physical activity, and the risk of psychiatric disorder (depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder). Sensitivity analysis was conducted using Cochran's Q test, the MR–Egger intercept test, the MR-pleiotropy RESidual sum and outlier test, leave-one-out analysis, and funnel plot analysis. Results: According to the IVW analysis, there was a significant association between genetically predicted leisure television watching and an increased risk of depression (odds ratio [OR] = 1.027, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.001–1.053; P = 0.04). The IVW analysis also indicated that there was a decreased risk of depression associated with fraction accelerations of > 425 milligravities, as measured by accelerometers (OR = 0.951, 95%CI: 0.914–0.989; P = 0.013). The other MR methods obtained consistent but non-significant results in the same direction. However, there was no evidence of a causal association between genetic liability for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, accelerometer-assessed physical activity, computer use, or driving and the risk of depression. Furthermore, IVW analysis has also found that driving has a slight effect in reducing the risk of schizophrenia (OR = 0.092, 95%CI: 0.010–0.827; P = 0.033), while leisure television viewing has a significant protective effect against the onset of bipolar disorder (OR = 0.719, 95%CI: 0.567–0.912; P = 0.006). Conclusion: The study provides compelling evidence of a link between depression, bipolar disorder, and excessive TV watching. Furthermore, it suggests that higher accelerometer-assessed fraction accelerations of > 425 milligravities can serve as a genetic protective factor against depression. To mitigate the risk of developing depression, it is advisable to reduce sedentary activities, particularly television watching, and prioritize engaging in vigorous physical exercise. Introduction: Cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are commonly found in the aging brain and have been implicated in the initiation and severity of many central nervous system diseases. Furthermore, an increased WMH volume indicates reduced brain health in older adults. This study investigated the association between WMH volume and physical activity in older adults with depressive symptoms (DS) and mild memory impairment (MMI). Factors associated with the WMH volume were also investigated. Methods: A total of 57 individuals aged over 65 years with DS and MMI were included in this study. The participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging to quantify WMH volumes. After WMH volume was accumulated, normalized to the total intracranial volume (TIV), the percentage of WMH volume was calculated. In addition, all participants wore a triaxial accelerometer for 2 weeks, and the average daily physical activity and number of steps were measured. The levels of blood biomarkers including cortisol, interleukin-6 (IL-6), brain-derived insulin-like growth factor-1, and brainderived neurotrophic factor were measured. Motor and cognitive functions were also assessed. Results: Faster maximum walking speed and longer time spent engaged in moderate physical activity were associated with a smaller percent of WMH volume, whereas higher serum IL-6 levels were associated with a larger percent of WMH volume. The number of steps per day, time spent engaged in low levels of physical activity, cognitive function, and all other measured biomarkers were not significantly associated with percent of WMH volume. Discussion: Higher blood inflammatory cytokine levels, shorter duration of moderate physical activity, and lower maximum walking speed were associated with a higher percent of WMH volume. Our results provide useful information for maintaining brain health in older adults at a high risk of developing dementia and may contribute to the development of preventive medicine for brain health. Background: Physical inactivity is associated with feelings of burnout and fatigue, which in turn are associated with reduced performance among healthcare practitioners. This study explored movement behaviours of general practitioners (GPs) and the association between these behaviours with burnout and fatigue. Methods: GPs in Northern Ireland were asked to wear a thigh-worn accelerometer for seven days and complete validated questionnaires to assess the association between daily number of steps, time spent sitting and standing with feelings of burnout and fatigue. Results: Valid accelerometer data were obtained from 47 (77.0%) participants. Average workday sitting time, standing time and number of steps were 10.6 h (SD 1.5), 3.8 h (SD 1.3), and 7796 steps (SD 3116) respectively. Participants were less sedentary (8.0 h (SD 1.6)) and more active (4.7 h (SD 1.4) standing time and 12,408 steps (SD 4496)) on non-workdays. Fourteen (30.4%) participants reported burnout and sixteen (34.8%) reported severe fatigue. There were no significant associations between sitting, standing and step counts with burnout or fatigue (p > 0.05). Conclusion: GPs were less active on workdays compared to non-workdays and exhibited high levels of sitting. Feelings of burnout and fatigue were highly prevalent, however movement behaviours were not found to be associated with burnout and fatigue. Given the increased sedentariness among GPs on workdays compared to non-workdays, GPs should consider how they can improve their movement behaviours on workdays to help optimise their wellbeing. This study aims to investigate the association of physical activity metrics with measures of glucose variability in people with type 1 diabetes. From August 2019 to January 2022, people with type 1 diabetes, attending clinics or participating in ongoing research at the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait, were invited to participate in the study. Physical activity was measured over a 7‐day period using a wrist‐worn accelerometer, and glucose variability data were measured by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) of the same period. Three hundred and eleven participants were recruited (age 33 (10) years, BMI 27(5) kg/m2 and n = 311 (169 female and 142 male)). Overall physical activity levels were not associated with any measure of glucose variability. The intensity gradient, which measures the distribution of physical activity intensity, was negatively associated with mean glucose (−1.01(−0.28, −1.74) and p = 0.007), CONGA (−1.00(−0.28, −1.72) and p = 0.007), J‐index (−11.7(−2.23, 21.2) and p = 0.016), HBGI (−2.73(−0.44, −5.02) and p = 0.020), GRADE (−2.27(−0.59, −3.95), p = 0.009) and GRADE – euglycaemia (−4.26(−0.46, −8.06) and p = 0–029) and the M‐value (−4.41 (−0.05, −8.77) and p = 0.049). Overall physical activity remains important, but it may be worth recommending people with type 1 diabetes to spend proportionately more of their day doing moderate to higher intensity physical activity, although this remains to be confirmed in an appropriately designed trial. Background: Few adolescents meet guideline levels of physical activity associated with good health, highlighting the need for intervention. Interventions promoting adolescents' physical activity should be guided by research applying behavioral theory to identify potentially modifiable correlates and associated processes. We applied an integrated social cognition model to identify theory-based constructs and processes that relate to physical activity intentions in a secondary analysis of two samples of Finnish adolescents using a correlational design. Method: Participants in the first sample (n = 455) completed self-report measures of social cognition constructs from theory of planned behavior, habit, self-discipline, and past and current physical activities. Participants in the second sample (n = 3878) completed identical measures plus measures of socio-structural and socio-environmental factors. Participants from the first sample also wore accelerometers for 1 week. Hypothesized model effects were tested using variance-based structural equation modeling in data from the first sample and subsequently confirmed in a pre-registered analysis of data from the second sample. Results: Across both samples, habit, attitude, perceived behavioral control, and self-reported past behavior were associated with physical activity intention. Effects of self-reported past physical activity on intention were partially mediated by social cognition constructs. Effects of accelerometer-based physical activity were small by comparison. Effects of socio-structural and socio-environmental factors on intention in the second sample were partially mediated by the social cognition constructs. Conclusion: Results corroborate beliefs and habit as consistent correlates of adolescents' physical activity intentions and provide preliminary evidence that social cognition constructs account for effects of socio-structural and socio-environmental factors on intentions. Background: Physical activity (PA) improves outcomes, but disadvantaged children typically experience more sedentary behavior (SB). This study explored movement, executive function (EF) health, and academic achievement (AA) for economically disadvantaged kindergarteners. Methods: Children in 2 classrooms (n = 16; n = 7) wore wrist‐based accelerometers to assess PA/SB during the school day. Independent t‐tests and analysis of variance analyzed mean group differences in PA/SB and EF/AA, and correlations explored AA and EF associations. Results: The movement‐based class spent significantly less time in SB compared to the contemporary class (t = 2.552, g = 1.115), made greater reading (t = −2.611) and math (t =.967) gains, and had better EF (t =.012). There were significant negative correlations between SB and math (r = −.534) and reading (r = −.592), but no significant relationships with EF. Implications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity: Schools should consider methods to decrease time spent in SB at lower‐SES schools, which is financially feasible and less time‐consuming than programs to increase PA. Conclusion: Decreased SB time was associated with better AA. Physical activity presents an important cornerstone in the management and care of individuals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Twenty-one individuals with HCM (age: 52±15 years old, body mass index (BMI): 30±7 kg/m2) completed 7-day monitoring using wrist-worn triaxial accelerometers (GENEActiv, ActivInsights Ltd, UK) and were compared to age and sex-matched healthy controls (age: 51±14 years old, BMI: 25±4 kg/m2). For individuals with HCM, clinical parameters (left atrial diameter and volume, peak oxygen consumption, NTproBNP and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure (MLHF)) were correlated with accelerometry. After adjusting for BMI, individuals with HCM spent less time in moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (86 (55–138) vs. 140 (121–149) minutes/day, p <0.05) compared to healthy controls. Individuals with HCM engaged in fewer MVPA-5 min (6 (2–15) vs. 27 (23–37) minutes/day, p <0.01) and MVPA-10 min bouts (9 (0–19) vs. 35 (17–54) minutes/day, p <0.01) versus healthy controls. For HCM only, peak oxygen consumption was correlated with MVPA (r =0.60, p <0.01) and MVPA-5 min bouts (r =0.47, p <0.05). MLHF score was correlated with slee p duration (r =0.45, p <0.05). Individuals with HCM should be encouraged to engage in moderate-intensity physical activity bouts and reduce prolonged periods of inactivity in order to potentially improve exercise tolerance and reduce disease burden. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the participation experiences of patients with type 2 diabetes in an Automated Personalized Self-Care program, assess the changes in self-care behavior and glycemic control, and evaluate the stages of change and readiness to change using the transtheoretical model (TTM). Methods: We examined 16 patients with type 2 diabetes who participated in a diabetes self-care program using a mobile application. Purposive sampling continued until data saturation. Using a mixed method study, we analyzed the participants’ characteristics, self-care behavior, stage of change, and readiness to change quantitatively and analyzed the qualitative data using Elo and Kyngas’s content analysis method. Results: The compliance group (CG) showed improved self-care behavior and glycemic control. In the CG, the proportion of participants in the action stage was higher in the exercise and diet domains and lower in the blood glucose testing and medication domains than in the non-compliance group (NCG). Readiness to change, motivation for health behaviors, and social motivation were higher in the CG, whereas personal motivation was higher in the NCG. In this qualitative study, three categories and 11 subcategories were identified. The findings suggest the CG regarded their experience in the program more frequently as positive, whereas the NCG perceived greater barriers to using the mobile application in the program. Conclusion: Based on the differences identified between the CG and NCG, TTM-based strategies are needed to facilitate the progression of NCG to the action stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of an active reading intervention on physical activity (PA) levels in preschoolers. Participants were recruited from the 3–5-year-old classes at two preschools. A total of six classrooms and 37 children participated in three conditions: an active reading book read by a researcher (Act_R) trained in active play techniques, an active reading book read by a preschool classroom teacher (Act_T), and a book about health behavior read by both the researcher and the teacher (Sed_H). The order in which classes received each condition was randomized. The Actigraph accelerometer assessed PA. Motor skills were assessed with the Peabody Motor Development Scale, 2nd Edition. Participants spent significantly more time in sedentary behavior during the Sed_H condition compared to Act_R (p < 0.000) and Act_T (p < 0.008). Participants spent significantly more time in MVPA during Act_R compared to Act_T (p = 0.030), Act_T compared to Sed_H (p < 0.001), and Act_R compared to Sed_H (p < 0.001). The amount of MVPA participation within the active reading sessions was not dependent upon the level of fundamental motor skill competence. Background: Although a significant lack of physical activity has been linked to an increase in obesity among Emirati women, the factors associated with accelerometer-measured sitting and physical activity times in Emirati women remain unclear. Objectives: To explore the association of accelerometer-measured sitting and physical activity times with sociodemographic, anthropometric, and sleep quality factors among Emirati working women. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: A convenience sample of 163 healthy working Emirati women aged 18–45 years was used. Sedentary and physical activity times were measured using the Fibion accelerometers worn on the thighs for 4–7 days. General demographic information, anthropometric measurements, and self-reported sleep quality (Pittsburgh sleep quality index score) were collected. Only participants who had valid data (i.e. wear time of ⩾600 min (10 h) per day for a minimum of 4–7 days) were evaluated. All values were normalized to a 16-h day to mitigate differences in wear time among the participants. Results: Overall, 110 Emirati women were included. The mean sitting time per 16-h day was 11.6 ± 1.1 h; mean moderate activity time per day, 40.88 ± 17.99 min; and mean vigorous activity time per day, 2.41 ± 1.21 min. Longer sitting time was associated with high body fat, secondary education, and divorce. Sitting time was reduced in those with good sleep quality. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity time was increased in women with postgraduate education and was decreased in women with a longer work experience and with comorbidities. The total activity time increased with increasing age and good sleep quality, whereas it decreased with increasing body fat, presence of at least one comorbidity, secondary education, and divorce. Conclusion: Certain demographic, anthropometric, and sleep quality factors were associated with accelerometer-measured sitting and physical activity times among Emirati working women. Athletes in contact sports are exposed to repetitive impacts as an inherent part of sport. There is concern over the accumulative effect; however, much is still unknown regarding their short-term effects. This study investigated impact accumulation and outcomes over three seasons (2015, 2017, 2019) in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision players. Impacts were recorded using helmet accelerometers, and virtual reality testing (VR) was done across the season. Incidence rates for impacts (total; ≥25 G to <80 G; ≥80 G) all significantly differed by season (p < 0.05). VR scores changed across the seasons, specifically significant decreases in spatial memory (p < 0.05) in 2015, significant changes in balance and spatial memory (p < 0.05) in 2017, and no significant changes in 2019. Linear regressions predicting VR change score by impact incidence rate were nonsignificant. Monitoring exposure to impacts and changes in outcomes is useful; however, results are fluid, and many factors could indirectly have protective effects on athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Music listening is widely used during exercise, but effects on physical activity are unknown. This review aimed to examine the effectiveness of music listening on physical activity of adults. Searches were conducted until September 2022. Eligible randomised controlled trials examined intentional music listening to enhance physical activity in adults. Trials were assessed using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. The GRADE approach assessed certainty of evidence. One high and two low risk-of-bias trials (113 participants, 63–68 years) from cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs were included. Moderate certainty evidence favoured music listening for total amounts of physical activity (n = 112, δ = 0.32, 95% CI = −0.06–0.70) and weekly moderate intensity physical activity (n = 88, MD = 52 min, 95% CI = −8–113). Low certainty evidence favoured music listening for exercise capacity (6-min walk test) (n = 79, MD = 101 metres, 95% CI = 2.32–199.88). There is imprecise, moderate certainty evidence that music listening increases physical activity by a small amount in older adults. Future research including adults of all ages with and without health conditions might investigate music listening with focussed behaviour change interventions. There is uncertainty in the current evidence but listening to music may lead to small increases physical activity in older adults with health conditions. Listening to music while walking may lead to improved exercise capacity.
