Background: Positive attitude toward evidence-based practice (EBP) principles in healthcare education may be one of the first steps for motivating a healthcare professional student to later apply EBP principles in clinical decision-making. The objectives for this project were to pilot an international web-based survey of chiropractic students and to describe student attitudes, behaviors, and knowledge about EBP principles. Methods: We used SurveyMonkey™ to develop our survey based on an existing questionnaire used to measure basic knowledge, skills and beliefs about EBP among allied healthcare professionals and CAM practitioners. We invited 26 chiropractic educational institutions teaching in English and accredited by official organizations to participate. Academic officials and registrars at participating institutions forwarded an invitation email and two reminders to students between July and September 2010. The invitation contained a link to the 38-item web-based questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were performed for analysis. Results: Fourteen institutions from Australia, Canada, US, Denmark and New Zealand participated. Among an estimated 7,142 student recipients of invitation letters, 674 participated in the survey for an estimated response rate of 9.4%. Most respondents reported having access to medical/healthcare literature through the internet, but only 11% read literature every week and 21% did not read literature at all. Respondents generally agreed that the use of research evidence in chiropractic was important. Although 76% of respondents found it easy to understand research evidence and 81% had some level of confidence assessing the general worth of research articles, 71% felt they needed more training in EBP to be able to apply evidence in chiropractic care. Respondents without previous training in research methods had lower confidence in assessing published papers. While more than 60% marked the correct answer for two knowledge items, the mean number of correct answers to the five knowledge questions was 1.3 (SD 0.9). Conclusions: Although it is feasible to conduct an international web survey of chiropractic students, significant stakeholder participation is important to improve response rates. Students had relatively positive attitudes toward EBP. Examination of factors related to the retention or voluntary turnover of Registered Nurses (RNs) has mainly focused on urban, acute care settings. This paper explored predictors of intent to leave (ITL) a nursing position in all rural and remote practice settings in Canada. Based on the conceptual framework developed for this project, potential predictors of ITL were related to the individual RN worker, the workplace, the community context, and satisfaction related to both the workplace and the community(s) within which the RN lived and worked. A national cross-sectional mail survey of RNs in rural and remote Canada provided the data (n = 3,051) for the logistic regression analysis of predictors of ITL. We found that RNs were more likely to plan to leave their nursing position within the next 12 months if they: were male, reported higher perceived stress, did not have dependent children or relatives, had higher education, were employed by their primary agency for a shorter time, had lower community satisfaction, had greater dissatisfaction with job scheduling, had lower satisfaction with their autonomy in the workplace, were required to be on call, performed advanced decisions or practice, and worked in a remote setting. The statistical evidence for predictors of ITL supported our framework with determinants related to the individual, the workplace, the community, and satisfaction levels. The importance of community makes this framework uniquely relevant to the rural health context. Our findings should guide policy makers and employers in developing retention strategies. This paper applies a general Bayesian inference approach, based on Bayesian evidence computation, to geoacoustic inversion of interface-wave dispersion data. Quantitative model selection is carried out by computing the evidence (normalizing constants) for several model parameterizations using annealed importance sampling. The resulting posterior probability density estimate is compared to estimates obtained from Metropolis-Hastings sampling to ensure consistent results. The approach is applied to invert interface-wave dispersion data collected on the Scotian Shelf, off the east coast of Canada for the sediment shear-wave velocity profile. Results are consistent with previous work on these data but extend the analysis to a rigorous approach including model selection and uncertainty analysis. Purpose - This paper aims to examine whether the corporate governance rankings published by a market information intermediary are reflected in the values that investors accord to firms. Design/methodology/approach - Panel data from 289 Canadian firms in the four-year period 2002-2005 were analyzed using a price model. Findings - The results suggest that the corporate governance rankings published by the market information intermediary are related to not only firm market value, but also to accounting results. Practical implications - This study provides empirical observations that would be useful for various organizations involved in the regulation of corporate governance practices and the standardization of relevant data elements. Originality/value - This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that information published by an information intermediary is reflected in firm market values. This paper elicited context specific underlying beliefs for physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption and smoke-free behaviour from the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), and then determined whether the TPB explained significant variation in intentions and behaviour over a 1 month period in a sample of grade 7-9 (age 12-16 years) adolescents. Eighteen individual interviews and one focus group were used to elicit student beliefs. Analyses of this data produced behavioural, normative and control beliefs which were put into a TPB questionnaire completed by 183 students at time 1 and time 2. The Path analyses from the main study showed that the attitude/intention relationship was moderately large for fruit and vegetable consumption and small to moderate for being smoke free. Perceived behavioural control had a large effect on being smoke free and a moderately large effect for fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity. Intention had a large direct effect on all three behaviours. Common (e.g. feel better, more energy) and behaviour-specific (e.g., prevent yellow fingers, control my weight) beliefs emerged across the three health behaviours. These novel findings, to the adolescent population, support the importance of specific attention being given to each of the behaviours in future multi-behavioural interventions. Objective This paper examined the 12-month rate of mental disorders and subsequent service use among Canadian seniors aged 65-79 and 80 and over and adults aged 20-49 and 50-64. Methods This is a secondary analysis of data [n = 33 695] of the population-based Canadian Community Health survey, Cycle 1.2 (CCHS 1.2). Major Depressive Episodes (MDEs), specific Anxiety Disorders (AD) and Alcohol Abuse/Dependence rates were assessed. Results The 12-month rates for the two senior groups aged 65-79 and 80+ for MDEs, ADs, and Substance Dependence (SD) are 1.7% and 1.6%; 1.4% and 0.8%; and 0.1% and 0.0%, respectively. Seniors aged 65-79 and 80+ had significantly lower rates than adults aged 20-49 and 50-64 for all mental disorders and SD. Among the total sample, seniors aged 65-79 and 80+ had significantly lower utilization rates than adults aged 20-49 and 50-64 for all three provider categories (GP only, GP and Other Health Professional, Any Other Health Professional but GP). Females aged 65-79 and 80+ were less likely to have reported service use for mental health reasons as opposed to those females aged 20-49 and 50-64. Males aged 65-79 and 80+ were more likely to have reported having used mental health services in the past 12 months as opposed to males aged 20-49 and 50-64. Conclusions The presence of common mental disorders is lower in seniors as compared to younger adults. Age and gender influence mental health service utilization rates. Abstract: Accuracy in population estimation from individual measurement has been traditionally a research focus in both theoretical and applied ecology. In forest sciences, estimation of productivity and value recovery of forest products is essential for decision-making to achieve the goal of sustainable forest management. In this paper, we review the basic structure of data in forest sciences, describe commonly used statistical procedures in obtaining population estimates, and examine the accuracy associated with the forest products value estimation using forest inventory data of Manitoba, Canada. Our results suggested that simplified statistical procedures could bring about a wide range of bias in estimating lumber value recovery at the stand level, and improved understanding of stand structure and its reconstruction through computer simulation could be essential in reducing the bias involved in the estimation. Abstract: Grass reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is an important agrometeorological parameter for climatological and hydrological studies, as well as for irrigation planning and management. There are several methods to estimate ETo, but their performance in different environments is diverse, since all of them have some empirical background. The FAO Penman–Monteith (FAO PM) method has been considered as a universal standard to estimate ETo for more than a decade. This method considers many parameters related to the evapotranspiration process; net radiation (Rn), air temperature (T), vapor pressure deficit (Δe), and wind speed (U); and has presented very good results when compared to data from lysimeters populated with short grass or alfalfa. In some conditions, the use of the FAO PM method is restricted by the lack of input variables. In these cases, when data are missing, the option is to calculate ETo by the FAO PM method using estimated input variables, as recommended by FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper 56. Based on that, the objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the FAO PM method to estimate ETo when Rn, Δe, and U data are missing, in Southern Ontario, Canada. Other alternative methods were also tested for the region: Priestley–Taylor, Hargreaves, and Thornthwaite. Data from 12 locations across Southern Ontario, Canada, were used to compare ETo estimated by the FAO PM method with a complete data set and with missing data. The alternative ETo equations were also tested and calibrated for each location. When relative humidity (RH) and U data were missing, the FAO PM method was still a very good option for estimating ETo for Southern Ontario, with RMSE smaller than 0.53mmday−1. For these cases, U data were replaced by the normal values for the region and Δe was estimated from temperature data. The Priestley–Taylor method was also a good option for estimating ETo when U and Δe data were missing, mainly when calibrated locally (RMSE =0.40mmday−1). When Rn was missing, the FAO PM method was not good enough for estimating ETo, with RMSE increasing to 0.79mmday−1. When only T data were available, adjusted Hargreaves and modified Thornthwaite methods were better options to estimate ETo than the FAO PM method, since RMSEs from these methods, respectively 0.79 and 0.83mmday−1, were significantly smaller than that obtained by FAO PM (RMSE =1.12mmday−1). The role of the principalship is that of an expert in assessment, instruction, curriculum and data analysis. In the past, aspiring principals obtained their training through many years of teaching, leading departments, perhaps administering summer programs to gain additional experiences. However , the expectations of working long, unpaid hours; dealing with teacher dissatisfaction; student discipline, public scrutiny on school management issues and the public display of student achievement outcomes from standardized tests have challenged many new principals. Tenosynovial giant cell tumor is a neoplastic disease of joints that can cause severe morbidity. Recurrences are common following local therapy, and no effective medical therapy currently exists. Recent work has demonstrated that all cases overexpress macrophage colony-stimulating factor (CSF1), usually as a consequence of an activating gene translocation, resulting in an influx of macrophages that form the bulk of the tumor. New anti-CSF1 drugs have been developed; however there are no preclinical models suitable for evaluation of drug benefits in this disease. In this paper, we describe a novel renal subcapsular xenograft model of tenosynovial giant cell tumor. Using this model, we demonstrate that an anti-CSF1 monoclonal antibody significantly inhibits host macrophage infiltration into this tumor. The results from this model support clinical trials of equivalent humanized agents and anti-CSF1R small molecule drugs in cases of tenosynovial giant cell tumor refractory to conventional local therapy. This paper presents, for the first time, multivariate analyses of Canadian national data and tests the relationship between class-based egalitarianism and housework for married and cohabiting male and female university professors in 2000. Consistent with evidence in the general population, gender accounts for more variation in housework than a host of other predictors (i.e., class- and gender-based ideology, institutional contexts and resources, available time, presence of children, age, minority racial status, and religiosity). Nevertheless, these forces play important roles in increasing or decreasing domestic labor contributions of both male and female academics. Among these, professors who possess class-based egalitarian views do more housework, and egalitarianism increases domestic labor contributions of males and decreases that of females. Design for moisture control has now become an established part of building envelope design. Hygrothermal modeling tools, capable of simulating moisture transfer in materials, are a key element of the design process. There are three principle methods of moisture transfer in envelopes. They are, in order of magnitude, capillary action, vapour convection, and vapour diffusion. Wind-driven rain has the potential to deposit large amounts of liquid water on the exterior surface, as well inside walls through rain penetration, providing a significant source for moisture transport. Most hygrothermal models are capable of handling wind-driven rain impinging on or penetrating the surface of the envelope. Correct results presuppose the availability of reliable rain intensity data. Many data sets, however, do not record hourly rain intensities but qualitative intensities such as light, moderate, or heavy. This paper examines several methods for assigning quantitative values to weather observations available in Canada. Real data, such as data from rain gauges, is preferable although the latter have shortcomings. Differences in catch can be up to 50% depending on gauge type, size, and exposure. When only rain codes are available the values recommended by the local meteorological service can provide adequate estimates. In case where there is observer bias a better estimate can be obtained by adjusting the value for light rainfall. If very little information is available stochastic modeling of rainfall is possible though the accuracy, especially for individual months is low. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Almost 36 million tonnes (t) of cereal grains are harvested annually on more than 16 million hectares (ha) on the Canadian prairies. The net straw production varies year by year depending upon weather patterns, crop fertility, soil conservation measures, harvest method, and plant variety. The net yield of straw, after discountinng for soil conservation, averages approximately 2.5 dry (d)t ha-1. Efficient equipment is needed to collect and package the material as a feedstock for industrial applications. This paper investigates the costs, energy input, and emissions from power equipment used for harvesting straw. Five scenarios were investigated: (1) large square bales, (2) round bales, (3) large compacted stacks (loafs), (4) dried chops, and (5) wet chops. The baled or loafed biomass is stacked next to the farm. Dry chop is collected in a large pile and wet chop is ensiled. The baling and stacking cost was $21.47 dt-1 (dry tonne), with little difference between round and large square baling. Loafing was the cheapest option at $17.08 dt-1. Dry chop and piling was $23.90 dt-1 and wet chop followed by ensiling was $59.75 dt-1. A significant portion of the wet chop cost was in ensiling. Energy input and emissions were proportional to the costs for each system, except for loafing, which required more energy input than the baling systems. As a fraction of the energy content of biomass (roughly 16 GJ dt-1), the energy input ranged from 1.2% for baling to 3.2% for ensiling. Emissions from the power equipment ranged from 20.3 kg CO2e dt-1 to more than 40 kg CO2e dt-1. A sensitivity analysis on the effect of yield on collection costs showed that a 33% increase in yield reduced the cost by 20%. Similarly a sensitivity analysis on weather conditions showed that a 10°C cooler climate extended the harvest period by 5-10 days whereas a 10°C warmer climate shortened the harvest period by 2-3 days. This paper illustrates three concepts new to the data envelopment analysis (DEA) literature, and applies them to data from Canadian paratransit agencies. First, it predicts valid confidence intervals and trends for each agency’s true efficiency. Second, it uses panel data analysis methodology, a set of statistical procedures that are more likely to produce valid estimates than those commonly used in DEA studies. This paper provides a summary of the findings from in-depth interviews with thirty social work educators and administrators involved in developing and offering c-learning in their programs in Canada. Using qualitative data analysis, four interrelated categories were developed: Professional Challenges, Pedagogical Challenges, Faculty Challenges and Administrative Challenges. A large number of issues were identified in each of these categories. Six themes emerged from the study. These themes form a two-part framework for examining policy issues and implementation tasks. Using time-use data from Canada, Norway, and Sweden, this study briefly outlines the essence of the activity setting approach and illustrates one aspect of its usefulness by exploring the impact of social contact on travel behaviour. The activity system approach views behaviour in context. Activity settings are generic components of the activity system and studying them using time-use diaries can provide major insights into travel behaviour. Focusing on social contact, this paper characterizes the social environment in terms of social circle (interaction partners) and social space (location). The analysis shows that there are clear differences in the levels of social interaction across various groups, including those who work at home. The 1992 Canadian data showed people working at the workplace spend relatively more time with others, about 50% of total time awake. Working at home reduced the time with others to a low of 15.7%. when people worked at home the family benefited, almost doubling the time spent with them compared to those working at the workplace. Persons working at home only spend the most time alone. There is a tendency for persons with low social interaction to travel more. It is argued that individual need, or want, social contact and if they cannot find it at the workplace they will seek it elsewhere thus generating travel. Whether this is the result of need or opportunity is of minor relevance, what it does suggest is that working in isolation at home will not necessarily diminish travel but rather may simply change its purpose. Trip-related falls are one of the major causes of injury among seniors in Canada and can be attributable to an inadequate Minimum Toe Clearance (MTC). Currently, motion capture systems are the gold standard for measuring MTC; however, they are expensive and have a restricted operating area. In this paper, a novel wearable system is proposed that can estimate different foot clearance parameters accurately using only two Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors located at the toe and heel of the shoe. A small-scale preliminary study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of foot clearance estimation using the proposed wearable system. We recruited ten young, healthy females to walk at three self-selected speeds (normal, slow, and fast) while wearing the system. Our data analysis showed an average correlation coefficient of 0.94, 0.94, 0.92 for the normal, slow, and fast speed, respectively, when comparing the ToF signals with motion capture. The ANOVA analysis confirmed these results further by revealing no statistically significant differences between the ToF signals and motion capture data for most of the gait parameters after applying the newly proposed foot angle and offset compensation. In addition, the proposed system can measure the MTC with an average Mean Error (ME) of −0.08 ± 3.69 mm, −0.12 ± 4.25 mm, and −0.10 ± 6.57 mm for normal, slow, and fast walking speeds, respectively. Through tests conducted at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority's (TRCA) Archetype Sustainable Houses, a hybrid residential space heating system with a supervisory controller was monitored and studied to evaluate its performance and effectiveness for the heating season. A high efficiency natural gas furnace (NGF) and an electric air source heat pump (ASHP) were coupled together to meet the space heating demand of the house. This integrated system is called the cloud based Smart Dual Fuel Switching System (SDFSS) that considers time-of-use (TOU) pricing, fuel cost, short-term weather forecast, and equipment efficiencies and capacities. This multi-variable decision-making process defines an optimal schedule for the hybrid system to run more cost effectively. This paper analyses two separate SDFSSs. According to these analyses, the SDFSS systems showed lower operating cost with respect to the furnace or the ASHP system alone with various carbon tax (CT) levels from $0 to $250/tonne of CT with an increment of $10/tonne of CT that were simulated, along with a significant GHG emission reduction relative to the conventional heating systems. Furthermore, with these technologies, Canada's residential sector could potentially meet Canada's Paris Agreement goals. The SDFSS technology is a is flexible, user friendly, ubiquitous technology for the smooth transition from today's natural gas dominated space heating system to the future's low carbon infrastructure powered by a heat pump and renewable energy. This paper addresses differences in survey response across city size by applying an explanation from House and Wolf to areas within cities. The data are from Toronto, Hamilton and Kitchener, in Canada. Consistent with other literature, response falls sharply from largest to smallest place, but variation in response rates within the cities is negligible. The intra-city analysis is accomplished by factor analyzing variables such as population density, crime rate and ethnic structure, mostly computed for census tracts, into a variable labelled social disorganization. What House and Wolf termed "compositional" variation in response is handled by record linking with municipal assessment information. Process simulation (PS) is essential in the eco-efficiency assessments (EEA) of dairy processes. PS indeed allows for analysis of a process with the help of mathematical models, and its ability to calculate rapidly and at little cost the mass and energy balances of processes can be exploited in the EEA of dairy processes. This paper presents the prototype of a workable tool developed to carry-out EEA of dairy processes. A process modelling and simulation software dedicated to dairy processing was developed to perform inventories of material and energy flows (IMEF) on the processes modelled by the software user. Addition of impact analysis data sets allowed for quantification of the potential environmental impacts associated with the modelled processes. Inputting economic data then made it possible to calculate the economic value associated with the modelled processes. Gathering these methods within a single numerical tool enabled EEA of any process modelled by the software user, but also identification of the hot spots and the opportunities for eco-efficiency improvements, comparisons of several scenarios of raw milk valuation, and assessment of their economic viability. In order to present the operational aspect of the developed prototype, it was used to compare the EE of fluid milk processing in Canada (Quebec) and the United-States of America. Individual eco-efficiency indicators (EEI) results showed that the potential environmental impacts were higher for the American scenario in three damage categories out of four. Economic viability results showed a slight advantage for the American scenario. Considering all the EEI, the comparative EEA did not offer evidence of a general benefit of one scenario over the other. The current low level of physical activity among Canadians is a dominant public health concern. Accordingly, a clear understanding of physical activity patterns and trends is of paramount importance. Irregularities in monitoring, analysis, and reporting procedures create potential confusion among researchers, policy-makers, and the public alike. The purpose of this paper is to consolidate reported findings and provide a critical assessment of the physical activity surveillance procedures, analytical practices, and reporting protocols currently employed in Canada to provide insights for accurate and consistent interpretation of data, as well as recommendations for future surveillance efforts.
