Patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs) for chronic wounds mainly focus on specific types of wounds. Our team developed the WOUND‐Q for use with all types of wounds in any anatomic location. We conducted 60 concept elicitation interviews with patients in Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United States. Analysis identified concepts of interest to patients and scales were formed and refined through cognitive interviews with 20 patients and input from 26 wound care experts. Scales were translated into Danish and Dutch. An international field‐test study collected data from 881 patients (1020 assessments) with chronic wounds. Rasch measurement theory (RMT) analysis was used to refine the scales and examine psychometric properties. RMT analysis supported the reliability and validity of 13 WOUND‐Q scales that measure wound characteristics (assessment, discharge, and smell), health‐related quality of life (life impact, psychological, sleep impact, and social), experience of care (information, home care nurses, medical team, and office staff), and wound treatment (dressing and suction device). BACKGROUND: It is unclear how individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are affected by texting, or how the texting performance of those with CTS might be impaired or different from individuals without CTS. OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of this case-control study was to determine the immediate effects of texting on superficial blood flow, sensory threshold, and symptoms of fatigue, numbness, and pain for individuals with CTS compared to asymptomatic age-matched controls. Another objective was to detect differences in texting performance between the two groups. METHODS: Superficial blood flow, pain, fatigue, numbness, and touch threshold were measured before, and at three time points following a standardized 15-minute texting task. Overall texting speed was compared between groups. RESULTS: Changes in red blood cell concentration after the texting task was not significantly different for either the CTS group or controls for any of the measurement time points. Mean touch thresholds at baseline were 4.0 g/mm2 for the CTS group versus 2.6 g/mm2 for healthy controls; a 53%greater touch threshold. Following the texting task, touch threshold did not change for normal controls, but increased to 6.7 g/mm2 for the CTS group, representing a significant increase in touch threshold from baseline. Texting performance was compromised in people with CTS, and symptoms worsened with a short-term controlled texting task. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that texting performance is limited in individuals with CTS and that texting results in a short term increase in touch threshold values for individuals with CTS. Purpose: The interconnectedness of phonological categories between the two languages of early bilinguals has previously been explored using single-probe speech production and perception data. Our goal was to tap into bilingual phonological representations in another way, namely via monitoring instances of phonetic drift due to changes in language exposure. Design: We report a case study of two teenage English–Czech simultaneous bilinguals who live in Canada and spend summers in Czechia (Czech Republic). Voice onset time (VOT) of word-initial voiced and voiceless stops was measured upon the bilinguals' arrival to and before their departure from a two-month stay in Czechia. Data and Analysis: Each bilingual read the same set of 71 Czech and 58 English stop-initial target words (and additional fillers) at each time of measurement. The measured VOT values were submitted to linear mixed effects models, assessing the effects of target language, measurement time, and underlying voicing. Findings/Conclusions: After the immersion in a Czech-speaking environment, for both speakers the count of voiced stops realized as prevoiced (i.e., having negative VOT) increased and the measured VOT of voiced stops (appearing different for English and Czech initially) drifted towards more negative (more Czech-like) values in both languages, while no change was detected for the voiceless stops of either English (aspirated) or Czech (unaspirated). The results suggest that the bilinguals maintain three-way VOT distinctions, differentiating voiceless aspirated (English), voiceless unaspirated (Czech), and voiced (English–Czech) stops, with connected bilingual representations of the voiced categories. Originality: Data on phonetic drift in simultaneous bilinguals proficient in their two languages have not previously been published. Significance/Implications: We show that observing phonetic shifts due to changes in the ambient linguistic environment can be revealing about the organization of phonological space in simultaneous bilinguals. Objective: This questionnaire‐based survey assessed the attitudes of dental hygiene students towards treating elderly patients. Methods: The 14‐item UCLA 14‐item Geriatrics Attitudes Scale (GAS‐14) questionnaire was used in this survey. A further set of nine questions evaluated the opinions of the students towards the existing geriatric curriculum in their respective institutions. Students from five dental hygiene schools from three countries (Switzerland, Belgium and Canada) participated in this survey. General demographic information from the participants was collected. Mean GAS‐14 scores were calculated; ANOVA and Bonferroni's tests were used for statistical analyses (p < 0.05). Results: Three hundred eighty‐five students (Switzerland: n = 157, mean age = 25.38 ± 4.6 years; Belgium: n = 82, mean age = 27.58 ± 12.8 years; Canada: n = 146, mean age = 25.95 ± 12.3 years) completed the survey for a response rate of 86.3%. The overall GAS‐14 scores for Switzerland, Belgium and Canada were 3.61 ± 0.42, 3.24 ± 0.37 and 3.32 ± 0.36, respectively. Switzerland scored significantly higher than Belgium and Canada (p < 0.0001). Overall scores revealed a significant effect of progressive training (p = 0.010). The GAS‐14 score was influenced by the nationality of the participants (p < 0.0001), but not influenced by sex, age, origin, religion, or marital and accommodation statuses. Majority of the students (75.8%) agreed that geriatric dentistry was an important part of their education. 77.4% agreed that they would like hands on experience in treating the elderly patient during their education. 85.1% of the participants considered mobile dental clinics as a good solution for the provision of dental care to the institutionalized elders. Conclusions: The general attitudes of DH students towards treating the elderly patients are on an acceptable level and improved as they progressed through their dental hygiene academic programmes. The negative effects of exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) on children have been well documented, including externalizing difficulties such as aggression. Although aggressive behavior is a common concern for these children, sibling aggression in children exposed to IPV has rarely been studied. Our purpose was to investigate similarities and differences in multiple informant reports of aggression by siblings exposed to IPV, and to examine how exposure to IPV was linked to these differing perspectives. Forty-seven sibling dyads and their mothers were recruited from the community. Aggression was assessed by observers, by mothers, and by the siblings themselves, whereas IPV was assessed by both maternal and child report. Informants had very differing views on aggression. Regression results indicated that children's reports of their own exposure to IPV accounted for significant variance in observed aggression between siblings, as well as in the maternal reports of aggression by both siblings. Aims and Objectives: To identify whether a Compassionate Mind Model‐based curriculum reduces students' perceived fears of compassion and improves their professional well‐being. Background: Enabling compassion is mandatory within nurse education but evidencing it is challenging. Research suggests that application of the Compassionate Mind Model might reduce students' fears of compassion and also decrease compassion fatigue. This study reports outcomes of a post‐registration curriculum based on that model for training Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (Health Visiting). Design: A quantitative, prospective evaluation of a 12‐month training course for Health Visiting students. Reporting was guided by the STROBE checklist for observational studies. Methods: Fears of compassion scales were applied at course start (time 1), mid‐point (time 2; +6 months) and end (time 3; +12 months) to evaluate fears of compassion of 26 post‐registration student Health Visitors (81% of course cohort) who provided data at all three points. The Professional Quality of Life tool was administered simultaneously to evaluate compassion satisfaction and burnout/secondary traumatic stress (compassion fatigue). Results: Between time 1 and time 3, mean fears of compassion scores decreased by 16.6‐48.5% (repeated measures analysis of variance); mid‐point scores were intermediary. At time 3, compassion satisfaction had increased slightly (+4.1%), negatively correlated with fears of compassion for self (r = −0.602; p =.001; n = 26) and fears of receiving compassion from others (r = −0.568; p =.002; n = 26). Burnout score decreased by 18.7%, correlated positively with fear of compassion for self (r = 0.493; p =.011; n = 26) and fear of receiving compassion from others (r = 0.615; p =.001; n = 26). Secondary traumatic stress score decreased by 16.5% but was not correlated with any fear of compassion. Conclusion: Findings suggest that application of the Compassionate Mind Model might reduce practitioners' fears of compassion linked to a decrease in risk of compassion fatigue. This study's aim was to explore the complexities of how power tilt use is integrated within the context of daily life. Other studies have used mobility-type metrics of frequency, duration, and amplitude as measures of power tilt use in the context of daily life but results lack depth in explaining the complex interplay of participating in daily activities and power tilt use. This grounded theory study explored how power tilt was used in daily life from the perspectives of people experienced with using power tilt and therapists experienced with prescribing power tilt. Data collected from 22 in-depth interviews and five 3-day journals were analysed using a constant comparative approach. The resultant substantive theory offers an avenue for examining the complex, iterative relationships of person, environment, technology and occupation that comprise daily life, influencing how power tilt is used at any point during the course of the day. The knowledge generated from this research contributes to the advancement of understanding of how the decision to use tilt is integrated in daily life occupations. The theory can inform clinical practice related to individualizing power tilt use within the context of the person's own reality of daily life. The decision to use tilt or not use tilt at any point during the day, is made contingent on the iterative transaction between environmental, functional and personal contexts at that point in time. Feedback from each experience where power tilt was used generates learning and knowledge about the context of power tilt use, informing subsequent occurrences where tilt use may be an option. The substantive theory generated in this study can provide an avenue to explore how and why context influences the decision-making process to foster an in-depth understanding of why tilt is chosen or not chosen to affect problems/issues/situations occurring in day-to-day life. Aims: The current study aimed to explore differences in adverse outcomes between youth and adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) living in child welfare care (i.e., foster care or group home) with those living with their biological parent(s) or with adoptive or other family member(s) in Canada. Methods: Data gathered from the Canadian National FASD Database were used for analysis. A total of 665 youth and adolescents with a clinical diagnosis of FASD under the age of 18 living in child welfare care, with biological, adoptive or other family members, were included in the sample. Key areas examined included living situation, legal problems, experience of sexual or physical abuse, mental health (anxiety, conduct disorder, mood disorder and post‐traumatic stress disorder) and suicidal ideation. Descriptive statistics and chi‐square comparisons were utilized to explore these differences. Results: Results revealed a significantly higher rate of reported sexual and physical abuse among individuals in child welfare care compared with those living with biological parents or with adoptive or other family member(s). Rates of difficulty with the law were also higher among those in child welfare care compared with adoptive/other family members. Conversely, the rate of mood disorders was significantly higher among those living with adoptive/other family members compared with child welfare care. Results highlight similar rates of reported suicidal ideation/attempts across all living situations, as well as mental health concerns. Conclusions: Results offer rare insight into the lives of youth and adolescents under age 18 with diagnosed FASD who reside in child welfare care in contrast to those living with biological parent(s) or with adoptive or other family members. These findings increase our awareness of the complexity of mental health concerns and suicide risk across all living environments. American eel population status in Canada was last assessed in 2012 and 2014. The present report re-assessed American eel abundance indices and investigated temporal trends in relative abundance in five management regions. Assessment included fishery-dependent and - independent data; however, the lack of data in several regions and/or for different life stages limited our ability to fully evaluate American eel population trends in Canada. Between 1874 and 2016, reported American eel landings in Canada varied between 200.6 and 1411.7 tons. From the 1880s to 1990 reported landings fluctuated without an overall trend, but showed relative stability in the 1970s and 1980s. Since about 1990 reported landings have steadily decreased. Fishery-independent indices, updated since the last assessment, were developed using generalized linear mixed models including temporal, environmental, and effort variables to account for changes in catchability. Overall, 12 fishery-independent datasets were evaluated of which 9 reflected yellow eel abundance. Trend analysis indicated that American eel abundance was stable (6 surveys), declining (4 surveys) or increasing (2 surveys). The 25th percentile reference point when compared to the initial year indicated 8 downward trends; however, when the 25th percentile reference point in the terminal year was compared to those in 2012 an increase in abundance was observed for 5 surveys over the last 5 years. Reference points for defining the stock status of American eel in Canada were not estimated as further data and analysis are needed. However, trends in relative abundance are similar to the last stock assessment in 2012 and recovery plan in 2014. Commercial landings and fisheriesindependent surveys suggest that American eel abundance has been stable since 2000 but at low abundance and the downward trend in several surveys remains a concern for the recovery of the population in Canada. Therefore, the American eel population is similar to 2012 and its stock continues to be at risk. Objectives: Patients adapt to cancer through self‐management, which requires collaboration between patients and their healthcare providers. We aimed to describe patterns of patient–provider collaboration during radiotherapy and examine associations among patient–provider collaboration, self‐management and well‐being. Methods: An observational, cross‐sectional study was conducted at a cancer centre in the province of Ontario, Canada. Cancer patients (N = 130) completed a one‐time questionnaire during their radiotherapy. The questionnaire assessed three variables: collaboration with healthcare providers, self‐management and well‐being. Patterns of collaboration were analysed using descriptive statistics. Associations among study variables were assessed through structural equation modelling (SEM). Separate models were tested for patient–nurse and patient–oncologist collaboration. Results: Participants reported greater collaboration with oncologists than with nurses or radiation therapists. Most participants reported no collaboration with other providers within healthcare teams (e.g. social workers, dietitians). SEM revealed different patterns for the patient–nurse and patient–oncologist collaboration models, where collaboration predicted one self‐management aspect, and both physical and mental well‐being. Conclusion: During radiotherapy, patients collaborated mainly with doctors, nurses and radiation therapists. Collaborative relationships between patients and providers may enhance patient outcomes by fostering their self‐management skills. Initiatives to strengthen patient–provider relationships and support self‐management should be developed and applied to interprofessional‐cancer‐care teams. Impact: This is the first known study to empirically support the links among patient–provider collaboration, self‐management and patient outcomes. Background Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) care for patients in many acute care settings around the world. In Ontario, Canada, this class of nurses is called registered practical nurses (RPNs). RPNs have a broad scope of practice, which can include providing care for patients who receive epidural analgesia. However, no published studies are available regarding LPN/RPN knowledge, skill, and judgment in caring for patients receiving epidural analgesia. Purpose Examine the effectiveness of simulation education for RPNs regarding assessment of patients receiving epidural analgesia. Method The study had an education component, which included a pre-workshop Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), a knowledge questionnaire, a lecture, and practice time. A second OSCE, knowledge questionnaire, and debriefing were completed at the end of the workshop. Results The number of correct procedures performed by each RPN (n=20) increased during the second OSCE. Improvement also was identified in answers to knowledge questions related to adverse effects of opioids, assessment of sensory block, documentation of motor block, and removal assessment. Conclusion This study found use of standardized patients in an education workshop regarding epidural analgesia for RPNs improves knowledge acquisition and assessment performance. In the context of low consumption of vegetables and fruits and milk and alternatives among Canadian mothers and children, novel strategies are needed to improve maternal and child nutrition. This study evaluated the long‐term effects of an evidence‐informed healthy eating blog on dietary intakes and food‐related behaviours of mothers and their child. The study presents a secondary outcome analysis of a randomised controlled trial in which 84 mothers (mean age of 37.6 ± 6.7 years) of 2‐ to 12‐year‐old children living in Quebec City, Canada, were randomly assigned to a dietary intervention delivered through a healthy eating blog written by a registered dietitian (RD; n = 42) or a control group (n = 42) during a period of 6 months. Dietary intakes, maternal eating behaviours, food parenting practices, and body weight were measured at baseline, 3 months, at the end of the intervention (6 months), and 6‐month post‐intervention (12 months). Differences between groups were assessed with mixed linear models. Globally, this study found no evidence of long‐term differences in mean dietary intakes in mothers exposed to the blog and their children as well as other food‐related outcomes and body weight compared with the control condition. Potential predictors of adherence to dietary recommendations in mothers and children (e.g., involvement of children in household food activities) were identified. In conclusion, a healthy eating blog written by an RD did not result in evidence of any long‐term differences in dietary intakes and food‐related behaviours in mothers and their children compared with the control condition. Recent decades have seen a more thoughtful discussion regarding the inclusion of children and youth in research and decision making, challenging how we conduct child and youth-focused studies. Included is a focus on Youth Participatory Action Research approaches and how they facilitate engagement of child and youth voice. Similarly, there is a smaller yet equally important questioning of how we understand "voice," drawing attention to the conceptualization of "voice," and the need to account for its social positioning and construction. Despite these various advances, current discussions focus predominantly on research design and data gathering, with an emerging focus on the dissemination of findings. Discussions focused specifically on data analysis remain limited. This omission seems important, given the bridge analysis forms between data gathering and dissemination of findings, and how this impacts youth engagement in the research process overall. By not considering more thoughtfully the ways in which children do or do not engage in the analysis of their data, how are we impacting the positioning of their "voice" in the findings? Similarly, how does our analysis unintentionally strengthen or undermine the platform from which youth share their findings, especially with those in positions of power? In response to these questions, we use this article to consider data analysis in relation to voice and subsequent knowledge production. We also share our approach to participatory thematic analysis in the Spaces & Places research project, a participatory action research program with Indigenous youth in three communities of Atlantic Canada. Through the discussion and exemplar, we hope to contribute to how researchers consider "voice," ours and those of child and youth collaborators, and the ways in which we can account for both in the analysis process, and enhance the voices of children and youth as knowledge brokers in the dissemination that follows. Objective. To determine if osteosarcoma (OS) and Ewing sarcoma (EWS) of the pelvis based on MRI can be differentiated using radiomic analysis. Materials and Methods. In this study, 3.0 T magnetic resonance (MR) data of 66 patients (40 males and 26 females, mean age 27.6 ± 13.9 years) with pathologically confirmed OS or EWS of the pelvis (35 with OS and 31 with EWS) taken from April 2013 to December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. T2-weighted fat-saturated (T2-FS) and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted (CET1) images were manually segmented, and imaging features were extracted. Independent-sample t -test, Spearman's test, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method were used to select the most useful features from the original data set. The performance of radiomic analysis was investigated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) analysis. Results. 385 initial features were extracted from T2-FS and CET1 MR data. Nine features from T2-FS and 7 features from CET1 were selected by using the LASSO method. The radiomic analysis to differentiate OS and EWS of the pelvis based on T2-FS and CET1 images using the aforementioned selected features achieved AUC values of 0.881 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.799–0.963) and 0.765 (95% CI: 0.652–0.878), respectively. Conclusion. Radiomic analysis showed potential in differentiating OS from EWS of the pelvis, in which T2-FS demonstrated better diagnostic value. To differentiate OS from EWS of the pelvis using our multiparametric MRI-based radiomic analysis could preoperatively improve diagnostic accuracy and greatly contribute to therapy planning. Background: Internet analytics are increasingly being integrated into public health regulation. One specific application is to monitor compliance of website and social media activity with respect to jurisdictional regulations. These data may then identify breaches of compliance and inform disciplinary actions. Our study aimed to evaluate the novel use of internet analytics by a Canadian chiropractic regulator to determine their registrants compliance with three regulations related to specific health conditions, pregnancy conditions and most recently, claims of improved immunity during the COVID-19 crisis. Methods: A customized internet search tool (Market Review Tool, MRT) was used by the College of Chiropractors of British Columbia (CCBC), Canada to audit registrants websites and social media activity. The audits extracted words whose use within specific contexts is not permitted under CCBC guidelines. The MRT was first used in October of 2018 to identify words related to specific health conditions. The MRT was again used in December 2019 for words related to pregnancy and most recently in March 2020 for words related to COVID-19. In these three MRT applications, potential cases of word misuse were evaluated by the regulator who then notified the practitioner to comply with existing regulations by a specific date. The MRT was then used on that date to determine compliance. Those found to be non-compliant were referred to the regulator's inquiry committee. We mapped this process and reported the outcomes with permission of the regulator. Results: In September 2018, 250 inappropriate mentions of specific health conditions were detected from approximately 1250 registrants with 2 failing to comply. The second scan for pregnancy related terms of approximately1350 practitioners revealed 83 inappropriate mentions. Following notification, all 83 cases were compliant within the specified timeframe. Regarding COVID-19 related words, 97 inappropriate mentions of the word "immune" were detected from 1350 registrants with 7 cases of non-compliance. Conclusion: Internet analytics are an effective way for regulators to monitor internet activity to protect the public from misleading statements. The processes described were effective at bringing about rapid practitioner compliance. Given the increasing volume of internet activity by healthcare professionals, internet analytics are an important addition for health care regulators to protect the public they serve. Physician assistants (PAs) are a growing group of healthcare providers who could facilitate the adoption of electronic healthcare (e‐Health) into practice. In 2018, we conducted a Canada‐wide web‐based survey study of practicing PAs and student PAs regarding their current exposure to e‐Health, as well as their perceived value for its use and interest in future adoption. For this study, e‐Health was defined as technology that allows direct communication between patients and healthcare providers or facilitates patient self‐management for the purpose of assessment and management. We focused on telehealth, direct messaging (e.g. text, email), patient‐directed web‐based applications (apps) and patient‐provider shared web‐based apps. Survey responses were analysed descriptively and compared between practicing and student PAs with Chi‐square tests of independence. We also examined correlations between age, exposure, perceived value and interest in future adoption for practicing PAs and student PAs separately. About 186 respondents completed the survey; 145 practicing PAs and 39 student PAs. Fewer than half of respondents had exposure to the studied e‐Health modalities. Compared to practicing PAs, student PAs more often perceived value in e‐Health and expressed interest in its expanded adoption. In both groups, perceived value frequently correlated significantly with interest in adoption. Student PAs report little formal education during their training, and both practicing PAs and student PAs note a need for infrastructure support, and general knowledge about what is available and safe in order to enable them to expand their use of e‐Health in practice. The most interest is present for patient‐directed apps and patient‐provider shared apps. With workload and remuneration barriers to physician adoption of e‐Health, salary‐based PAs could have a role in facilitating the integration of e‐Health solutions into practice. Background: The Mesure de l'impact de la déficience visuelle dans les activités quotidiennes (MIDVAQ) is the Canadian–French adaptation of the Melbourne Low-Vision ADL Index. It measures performance, personal importance and handicap situation in 16 instrumental activities requiring near vision (standardized material, part A) and in 9 self-care and domestic activities (self-report questionnaire, part B). This study aimed at measuring the MIDVAQ reliability and its relationship with measures of visual functions and functional vision. Methods: The MIDVAQ was administered twice to 100 visually impaired participants, at home, with their personal visual and non-visual aid. A second rater was present at T1. Two different versions of part A were used alternately at T1 and T2. Results: The total Handicap scale demonstrates good internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.82) and very high inter-rater and test-retest reliability (ICCs = 1.00 and 0.86). Part A alternative versions are highly comparable. Vision function measures are significantly correlated with total Handicap score, for which 48% of the variance is explained by functional vision estimates, age, and education. Conclusions: The MIDVAQ is highly valid and reliable. It can be useful to measure the functional impact of the visual impairment, its progression, and the outcomes of low vision rehabilitation services. Even if administered at home in an ecological way, this measure of the impact of the visual impairment in daily activities is very reliable. Given its good metric properties, this tool can be confidently used to assess the functional impact of visual impairment, outcomes of the low vision rehabilitation services, etc. This measurement tool provides complementary information to those obtained from clinical measures of visual functions, by reflecting the interaction between the functional abilities with the requirements of the environment. Purpose: To describe the change in spatiotemporal gait asymmetry after discharge from stroke rehabilitation and examine the relationship with change in other clinical outcome measures. Methods: Secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study was conducted. Swing time and step length symmetry, balance, mobility, gait speed, and motor impairment were assessed at discharge and 6 months later. Participants (n = 61) were classified by shift in symmetry status (Asymmetric-to-Symmetric, Symmetric-to-Asymmetric, No Shift) and magnitude of difference scores (Improved, Worse, No Difference). Correlations between change in spatiotemporal symmetry and the other clinical measures of physical status were calculated. Results: At discharge, 61% (37/61) and 36% (22/61) of participants were asymmetric in swing time and step length, respectively. Of this subgroup, 43% (16/37) and 50% (11/22) shifted to symmetric gait by follow-up. In contrast, only six individuals significantly improved in swing and/or step symmetry according to minimal detectable change. Change in spatiotemporal symmetry was not significantly correlated with change in the clinical outcome measures. Conclusions: Despite overall gains in physical function and decreased prevalence of asymmetry, most individuals with stroke do not improve in swing or step symmetry following discharge from rehabilitation. Further research is necessary to elucidate factors that affect recovery of gait quality. Asymmetric gait after stroke is a major concern for patients and their therapists but can be resistant to intervention. Spatiotemporal asymmetry persists for many individuals following discharge from hospital stay despite improvement in other gait-related measures. Context: Medical schools of geographically large nations have expanded into rural areas to facilitate the development of a sustainable rural pipeline of physicians. Preceptor, or clinical teacher, recruitment at these sites has been an ongoing challenge. However, residents‐as‐teachers (RaT) curricula have not been modified to support the development of rural teachers. This study aimed to compare teaching opportunities between rural and urban family medicine residents and to identify mechanisms underlying potential differences. Methods: Year‐1 and Year‐2 family medicine residents at seven Canadian institutions participated in a mixed‐methods study utilising a quantitative survey and a qualitative interview. Rural and urban residents rated the quantity and types of teaching opportunities available during their training, from which a chi‐squared analysis was completed. Volunteer respondents participated in a structured interview, from which a thematic analysis was performed. Results: Rural family medicine residents had fewer opportunities to teach compared to their urban colleagues. This discrepancy was seen across multiple domains, including informal opportunities when on family medicine rotations, χ2 (4, n = 242) = 45.26, P <.000, Bonferroni's adjusted P <.000. Thematic analysis centred around determining factors influencing teaching opportunities and identified that the academic context, personal factors and programme factors were key dimensions. Within these dimensions, the number of medical students, a desire to be an educator and administrative support were cited as influences on teaching opportunities. Conclusions: The lack of teaching opportunities for rural trainees is attributable to a combination of practical and organisational factors revealed through thematic analysis. If rural graduates are not comfortable balancing the demands of service and teaching, this could compound the already prevalent issue of rural preceptor recruitment. It is essential to develop a rural‐focused RaT curriculum to close this gap and produce competent educators who are ready to inspire generations of rural physicians. As arguments mount for increasing the amount of training in rural family medicine environments, requiring the need for educational expertise in those contexts, our field may have overlooked how hard it is for trainees to develop rural environment‐focused teaching skills. Objective: Prenatal care is a vital and important part of a healthy pregnancy, providing many maternal and health benefits. Despite Canada's publically funded health care system with universal access, inadequate rates of prenatal care continue to be observed. As a modifiable risk factor, the process variables that influence satisfaction with prenatal care in Canadian settings have received little attention. The objective of this study was to identify the predictors of satisfaction with prenatal care. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational design was used to examine the relationships between expectations, interpersonal processes of care, the quality of prenatal care, personal characteristics, and the type of provider with overall satisfaction, and with four dimensions of satisfaction. A convenience sample of 216 pregnant women was surveyed using self-administered questionnaires with women in their third trimester. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify predictors of satisfaction. Results: The quality of prenatal care and provider interpersonal style together explained 80% of the variance in overall satisfaction. Patient-centered decision-making was a significant predictor of satisfaction with information, while having a midwife was a predictor of satisfaction with system characteristics. Expectations were not related to satisfaction. Conclusions for Practice: Improving quality of care, provider interpersonal style and patient-centered decision making, and improving the structural characteristics of prenatal care may be effective in improving women's satisfaction and utilization of prenatal care. The purpose of this study was to assess fitness and gross motor performance of children with ADHD, including users and nonusers of methylphenidate medication. Seventy boys took part in the study. Fitness level of children with ADHD using medication or not, including body composition, flexibility, and muscular endurance, was similar to that of a control group. The only difference was observed for body mass index, which was lower in children with ADHD using medication. Aerobic capacity was also similar when measured by a treadmill test. A lower performance was observed when aerobic capacity was estimated using a field shuttle test, however, suggesting that the methodology used is important. Process simulation (PS) is essential in the eco-efficiency assessments (EEA) of dairy processes. PS indeed allows for analysis of a process with the help of mathematical models, and its ability to calculate rapidly and at little cost the mass and energy balances of processes can be exploited in the EEA of dairy processes. This paper presents the prototype of a workable tool developed to carry-out EEA of dairy processes. A process modelling and simulation software dedicated to dairy processing was developed to perform inventories of material and energy flows (IMEF) on the processes modelled by the software user. Addition of impact analysis data sets allowed for quantification of the potential environmental impacts associated with the modelled processes. Inputting economic data then made it possible to calculate the economic value associated with the modelled processes. Gathering these methods within a single numerical tool enabled EEA of any process modelled by the software user, but also identification of the hot spots and the opportunities for eco-efficiency improvements, comparisons of several scenarios of raw milk valuation, and assessment of their economic viability. In order to present the operational aspect of the developed prototype, it was used to compare the EE of fluid milk processing in Canada (Quebec) and the United-States of America. Individual eco-efficiency indicators (EEI) results showed that the potential environmental impacts were higher for the American scenario in three damage categories out of four. Economic viability results showed a slight advantage for the American scenario. Considering all the EEI, the comparative EEA did not offer evidence of a general benefit of one scenario over the other. Objective: To examine agreement between administrative and self-reported data on the number of and constituent chronic conditions (CCs) used to measure multimorbidity. Study Design and Setting: Cross-sectional self-reported survey data from four Canadian Community Health Survey waves were linked to administrative data for residents of Ontario, Canada. Agreement for each of 12 CCs was assessed using kappa (κ) statistics. For the overall number of CCs, perfect agreement was defined as agreement on both the number and constituent CCs. Jackknife methods were used to assess the impact of individual CCs on perfect agreement. Results: The level of chance-adjusted agreement between self-report and administrative data for individual CCs varied widely, from κ = 5.5% (inflammatory bowel disease) to κ = 77.5% (diabetes), and there was no clear pattern on whether using administrative data or self-reported data led to higher prevalence estimates. Only 26.9% of participants had perfect agreement on the number and constituent CCs; 10.6% agreed on the number but not constituent CCs. The impact of each CC on perfect agreement depended on both the level of agreement and the prevalence of the individual CC. Conclusion: Our results show that measuring agreement on multimorbidity is more complex than for individual CCs and that even small levels of individual condition disagreement can have a large impact on the agreement on the number of CCs. While a significant health concern for sexual minority women, there is little qualitative research investigating their experiences of childhood trauma and suicidality. In this study, we used photovoice methods and an intersectionality framework. Drawing on qualitative interviews, we inductively derived three themes (a) Traumatized and discredited, (b) Cascading marginality, estrangement, and suicidality, (c) Reconstruction and reclaiming resilience. In Traumatized and discredited, we describe the sense of abandonment flowing from childhood trauma heightened by a lack of protection and neglect on the part of parents/guardians. The lack of support to deal with childhood trauma and the layering effects of marginality characterizes the theme Cascading marginality, estrangement, and suicidality. In the third theme, we discuss strategies for reconstruction and reclaiming resilience as participants worked to overcome these challenging experiences. Our study findings offer guidance to suicide prevention counseling programs for sexual minority women and affirm actions to address health inequities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Given that added knowledge and deeper understanding are needed with regard to regional variations in the creation of new firms, this study seeks to answer the following two research questions: What are the variables that explain entrepreneurial dynamism and how may they be apprehended under the four necessary and complementary dimensions of this phenomenon, namely the demand, supply, institutional and spatial dimensions? And how should the nature and interrelatedness of these dimensions and their associated variables influence regional policymakers and other regional stakeholders in their efforts to stimulate entrepreneurship in their region? In order to do so, we used mixed methods to collect and analyze regional data, first doing a regression analysis of quantitative data on 97 small regions in Canada's province of Québec, followed by a qualitative survey of regional stakeholders on eight matched pairs of regions. A phenomenological qualitative analysis was then effectuated in order to gain a deeper understanding of the research variables' effects and thus grasp the complex socio-economic reality of entrepreneurial dynamism in a region. The results of the study confirm the importance and interrelatedness of the four dimensions of entrepreneurial dynamism in providing new insights into these questions. Moreover, the findings that results from these quantitative, qualitative and holistic analyses have implications for the policies of regional authorities and for the actions of other regional stakeholders. The ideal tool for determination of malnutrition risk or malnutrition in long term care (LTC) is elusive. This study compares prevalence, association with resident risk factors and sensitivity (SE) and specificity (SP) of malnutrition or risk categorization in 638 residents from 32 LTC homes in Canada using four tools: the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF); Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) Global Category Rating and the Pt-Global webtool; and the interRAI Long Term Care Facility undernutrition trigger. Prevalence was most common with MNA-SF (53.7%) and lowest with InterRAI (28.9%), while the PG-SGA Global Category Rating (44%) was higher than the Pt-Global webtool (33.4%). Tools were consistently associated with resident covariates with few exceptions. The PG-SGA Global Category Rating demonstrated the best sensitivity and specificity when compared to all other tools. Objective: This study examined accessibility of communication tools in the workplace, use of education to update nursing knowledge, and use of information to make specific decisions in practice among registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in rural and remote communities in Canada. Methods: Data were analyzed from the cross-sectional survey, "Nursing Practice in Rural and Remote Canada II," of regulated nurses practicing in all provinces and territories of Canada. Data were collected from April 2014 to August 2015. Results: The survey was completed by 3,822 of 9,622 nurses (40% response), and the present analysis was conducted with a subsample of 2,827 nurses. High-speed Internet was the most accessible communication tool, and nurses used "online/electronic education" more often than "in-person education" to update their nursing knowledge. Internet searches were used more often than several other online/electronic sources to inform decision making. Compared to LPNs, RNs reported greater workplace access to most communication tools and greater use of online/electronic education as well as information sources in online/electronic and print formats. Compared to nurses in community-based health care and hospital settings, nurses in long-term care settings reported lower access to most communication tools, lower use of online/electronic and in-person education, and lower use of online/electronic information. Conclusions: Access to continuing education and up-to-date information is important for effective patient care. This study points to a need for further research on the continuing education and information needs of rural and remote RNs and LPNs, and on their capacity to incorporate and apply new knowledge in practice. LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, etc.) youth are at increased risk for negative outcomes. Yet little is known about their engagement with communities and resources that may ameliorate risk, particularly online. Oriented by a uses and gratifications approach, this secondary analysis (n = 4,009) of LGBTQ+ youth (aged 14–29) compares online versus offline experiences. Respondents were significantly more likely to participate in LGBTQ+ communities online. Youth were also more active, and felt safer and more supported, when participating in online LGBTQ + communities. Additionally, respondents sought online information, support, and resources at higher rates than offline. Increased attention toward online programming and resource development is warranted. Many time-series analysis techniques use sliding window approaches or are repeatedly applied over a continuous range of parameters. When combined with a significance test, intrinsic correlations among the pointwise analysis results can make falsely positive significant points appear as continuous patches rather than as isolated points. To account for this effect, we present an areawise significance test that identifies such false-positive patches. For this purpose, we numerically estimate the decorrelation length of the statistic of interest by calculating correlation functions between the analysis results and require an areawise significant point to belong to a patch of pointwise significant points that is larger than this decorrelation length. We apply our areawise test to results from windowed traditional and scale-specific recurrence network analysis in order to identify dynamical anomalies in time series of a non-stationary Rössler system and tree ring width index values from Eastern Canada. Especially, in the palaeoclimate context, the areawise testing approach markedly reduces the number of points that are identified as significant and therefore highlights only the most relevant features in the data. Residual spatial autocorrelation is a situation frequently encountered in regression analysis of spatial data. The statistical problems arising due to this phenomenon are well‐understood. Original developments in the field of statistical analysis of spatial data were meant to detect spatial pattern, in order to assess whether corrective measures were required. An early development was the use of residual autocorrelation as an exploratory tool to improve regression analysis of spatial data. In this note, we propose the use of spatial filtering and exploratory data analysis as a way to identify omitted but potentially relevant independent variables. We use an example of blood donation patterns in Toronto, Canada, to demonstrate the proposed approach. In particular, we show how an initial filter used to rectify autocorrelation problems can be progressively replaced by substantive variables. In the present case, the variables so retrieved reveal the impact of urban form, travel habits, and demographic and socio‐economic attributes on donation rates. The approach is particularly appealing for model formulations that do not easily accommodate positive spatial autocorrelation, but should be of interest as well for the case of continuous variables in linear regression. Previous research on gender differences and delay of disclosure of child sexual abuse is inconclusive; some research has found that male victims are more likely to delay disclosure than female victims, while other studies have found no gender difference. The present archival study investigated this inconsistency by examining factors that interact with delay. Judicial outcomes of child sexual abuse cases were coded (N = 4237) for variables related to the offense, the complainant-accused relationship, and court proceedings. Males and females differed with respect to delay only when the relationship between the complainant and the accused was established in the community (e.g., sports coach) or was a stranger to the child. When the accused was a parent, other relative, or a non-relative connected to the child through the family, there was no difference in delay between males and females. Further, males were more vulnerable in the community, as evidenced by a higher proportion of accused community members with male than female complainants, even though males represented fewer than 25% of cases in the database. These findings may help explain inconsistencies in gender differences in delayed disclosure. Implications regarding education about child sexual abuse are discussed, with a focus on male victims. Aims and objectives: To understand how parents experienced miscarriage in an emergency department setting. Objectives were to identify parents' needs, isolate factors that influenced their experience, and provide recommendations to improve care from the perspective of women, their partners, nurses and nurse managers. Background: Miscarriage is the most prevalent complication encountered during pregnancy. It subjects parents to a multitude of emotions and may have significant consequences on mental health. Emergency department visits are frequently the only opportunity for parents to receive formal support during a miscarriage; it is thus crucial to understand the experiences of parents in this setting. Design: The study employed a descriptive, exploratory, qualitative approach with semi‐structured interviews. Methods: The study was founded on the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Logic Model Development Guide (2004) and Meleis' Transitions Theory (2015). A total of 26 participants were interviewed (17 parents, 7 emergency department nurses and 2 emergency department nurse managers). Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research was used to report results. Results: Three categories of needs were identified: physical health, cognitive and emotional. For instance, parents expressed a need to receive more information during their visit to the emergency department (i.e., a cognitive need), whether about the diagnostic test results or how to ensure a better recovery. Parents also reported a desire for professionals to address their emotional concerns. Nurses were aware of the emotional impact of miscarriage but felt that they were not adequately trained in providing optimal care to parents in this situation. Conclusions: Parents who visited the emergency department for miscarriage reported several unfulfilled needs that generated dissatisfaction with care. Emergency department organisational constraints hindered optimal nursing care practices. Relevance to clinical practice: Nurses have an important role to play in improving parents' experience. LINKages, a nonprofit organization, aims to bridge the gap between older and younger generations by building intergenerational programs for youth and older adults. The objective of this project was to explore the influence of the LINKages intergenerational program on: a) older adults’ affect and levels of engagement, and b) youth volunteers’ experiences of engagement and perceptions of older adults. An exploratory case study design was used to address the study objectives. Sixty-five residents from four residential care homes and 87 youth volunteers in the LINKages program participated. Data were collected over 7 months. Statistically significant improvements in students’ perceptions of older adults and their experiences of engagement were found following their participation in the LINKages program. Participation also resulted in positive benefits for residents based on their observed levels of engagement and positive affect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Ontario Brain Institute (OBI) has begun to catalyze scientific discovery in the field of neuroscience through its large-scale informatics platform, known as Brain-CODE. The platform supports the capture, storage, federation, sharing, and analysis of different data types across several brain disorders. Underlying the platform is a robust and scalable data governance structure which allows for the flexibility to advance scientific understanding, while protecting the privacy of research participants. Recognizing the value of an open science approach to enabling discovery, the governance structure was designed not only to support collaborative research programs, but also to support open science by making all data open and accessible in the future. OBI's rigorous approach to data sharing maintains the accessibility of research data for big discoveries without compromising privacy and security. Taking a Privacy by Design approach to both data sharing and development of the platform has allowed OBI to establish some best practices related to large-scale data sharing within Canada. Introduction. With community-dwelling elders waiting to adapt their bathroom, Health and Social Services Centers in Quebec (Canada) combined human resources through cross-skilling within interdisciplinary teams. To this end, occupational therapists implemented in-house "tools" to support nonoccupational therapists in selecting bathing equipment. However, unknown psychometric properties of those in-house "tools" cast doubt on the quality of service provided to elders. Little is also known about the best processes to use to support the deimplementation of such nonevidence-based practices. This study presents the effect of a knowledge transfer and exchange intervention designed to deimplement in-house "tools" and replace them with an evidence-based tool (Algo). Methods. Censuses were conducted with the 94 Health and Social Services Centers of Quebec providing homecare services, before and after the knowledge transfer and exchange intervention (2009-2013). In 2013, the deimplementation of in-house "tools" and their replacement by Algo were measured with Knott and Wildavsky's levels of utilization. Results. Cross-skilling within interdisciplinary teams increased between censuses (87% to 98%), as did use of in-house "tools" (67% to 81%). Algo's uptake started during the knowledge transfer and exchange process as 25 Health and Social Services Centers achieved the first level of utilization. Nonetheless, no Health and Social Services Center deimplemented the in-house "tools" to use Algo. Conclusion. The knowledge transfer and exchange process led to the development of a scientifically sound clinical tool (Algo) and challenged the status quo in clinical settings regarding the use of nonevidence-based practices. However, the deimplementation of in-use practices has not yet been observed. This study highlights the need to act proactively on the deimplementation and implementation processes. Purpose Performance-based and disease indicators have been widely studied in firefighters; self-reported work role limitations have not. The aim of this study was to describe the distributions and correlations of a generic self-reported Work Limitations Questionnaire (WLQ-26) and firefighting-specific task performance-based tests. Methods Active firefighters from the City of Hamilton Fire Services (n = 293) were recruited. Participants completed the WLQ-26 to quantify on-the-job difficulties over five work domains: work scheduling (4 items), output demands (7 items), physical demands (8 items), mental demands (4 items), and social demands (3 items). A subset of participants (n = 149) were also assessed on hose drag and stair climb with a high-rise pack performance-based tests. Descriptive statistics and correlations were used to compare item/subscale performance; and to describe the inter-relationships between tests. Results The mean WLQ-26 item scores (/5) ranged from 4.1 to 4.4 (median = 5 for all items); most firefighters (54.5-80.5%) selected "difficult none of the time" response option on all items. A substantial ceiling effect was observed across all five WLQ-26 subscales as 44.0-55.6% were in the highest category. Subscale means ranged from 61.8 (social demands) to 78.7 (output demands and physical demands). Internal consistency exceeded 0.90 on all subscales. For the hose drag task, the mean time-to-completion was 48.0 s (SD = 14.5; range 20.4-95.0). For the stair climb task, the mean time-to-completion was 76.7 s (SD = 37.2; range 21.0-218.0). There were no significant correlations between self-report work limitations and performance of firefighting tasks. Conclusions The WLQ-26 measured five domains, but had ceiling effects in firefighters. Performance-based testing showed wider score range, lacked ceiling effects and did not correlate to the WLQ-26. Educating nursing students about the ageing population is situated within negative societal, heath care and nursing perceptions. A cross-sectional design using Burbank's perceptions towards older people scale was used to survey students in a pre-licensure nursing program in western Canada. Findings revealed that students' perceptions about older people were lower in the third year of the nursing program and after four clinical experiences. We suggest that students' first experiences in long-term care settings, in which they learn to provide basic care to older people, be balanced with experiences of older people in a variety of settings. Such experiences would allow students to develop the knowledge and skill needed to work with an ageing population with complex healthcare needs. More research is needed to better understand students' experiences and perceptions about where in the program more learning strategies about how to best work with older people would be helpful. Purpose: Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability worldwide. This study is part of a mixed methods pilot trial, exploring the effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility of providing behavioral activation (BA) treatment in a group format. Methods: Using an applied, descriptive approach, qualitative data were collected from individual interviews (18) and focus groups (5) at multiple data points throughout the trial and feedback given to group facilitators, who adapted the program accordingly. Results: Group BA is an effective and acceptable treatment format when a client-centered, flexible approach is utilized. This contrasted with findings from the comparison intervention, a peer support group, from which participants reported no benefit. Conclusions: Group BA is beneficial in a fiscally responsible evidenced-based health-care culture. Comparator groups need to be carefully selected. Previous research suggests that going unmatched in the competitive co-op job search process might have an emotional cost. This study examined the feasibility and efficacy of interventions for improving unmatched co-op students' emotional wellbeing. Participants (n = 74) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a positive psychology based writing task, a toolkit with materials and information about coping with stress, or a control condition. They completed a measure of emotional wellbeing before and after the intervention period (one week long). Controlling for pre-intervention emotional wellbeing, statistically significant gains in emotional wellbeing were reported only by those in the writing task condition. Administering positive interventions such as instructions to focus on "good things" may be particularly feasible and effective in the co-op context. Background: Healthcare professionals involved in pain management come from different disciplines, which may have different perspectives and training about evidence-based practice (EBP). A common concern for health professionals is pain management. Understanding how different professions involved in pain management view EBP forms the ideal context to study professional differences in EPP, and how this might influence pain management. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare different professions with respect to knowledge, attitudes and self-reported behavior toward EBP. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and psychologists who were involved in pain management (n=675) completed an online survey on a single occasion. The survey included demographic questions and the EBP-knowledge, attitude, behavior questionnaire (EBP-KABQ). This is a 27-item questionnaire that has been validated for use with different health professionals, and measures four constructs related to EBP (knowledge, attitude, behavior and outcome/decision). Differences between professionals were identified using a one-way between groups analysis of variance, with post-hoc testing (statistical significance was set at P value less than 0.05; clinical significance set at a mean difference of 10%). Results: The score on three of the four subscales of the KABQ were statistically different across professions. In general, knowledge scores were high for all professions (83-87%). Nurses demonstrated statistically higher levels of EBP knowledge (87%) when compared with other groups (F=4.79, P=0.001), but the differences were not deemed clinically relevant. Behavior was the lowest subscale and the most variable across professions (37-56%). Physicians had statistically significant (F=25.69; P=0.001), and clinically relevant, higher behavior subscale scores (56%) when compared with other professional groups. Physicians (73%) also had higher outcome/decision subscale scores (F=6.50; P=0.001), but this was only marginally different from other professions (65-73%). The attitude subscale scores were low and were not different across professions (range 57-59%; F=1.65, P=0.16; NS). Conclusion: The current study indicates that physicians and allied health professionals have similar EBP attitudes and knowledge. All professional groups seem to have suboptimal implementation of EBP. The nature of medical decision-making, its evidentiary pool, or longer experience with EBP may contribute to greater implementation amongst physicians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim and objective: To explore the accuracy with which nursing students can identify the fundamentals of care. Background: A challenge facing nursing is ensuring the fundamentals of care are provided with compassion and in a timely manner. How students perceive the importance of the fundamentals of care may be influenced by the content and delivery of their nursing curriculum. As the fundamentals of care play a vital role in ensuring patient safety and quality care, it is important to examine how nursing students identify these care needs. Design: Cross‐sectional descriptive design. Methods: A total of 398 nursing students (pre‐ and postregistration) from universities in Sweden, England, Japan, Canada and Australia participated. The Fundamentals of Care Framework guided this study. A questionnaire containing three care scenarios was developed and validated. Study participants identified the fundamentals of care for each of the scenarios. All responses were rated and analysed using ANOVA. Results: The data illustrate certain fundamentals of care were identified more frequently, including communication and education; comfort and elimination, whilst respecting choice, privacy and dignity were less frequently identified. The ability to identify all the correct care needs was low overall across the pre‐ and postregistration nursing programmes in the five universities. Significant differences in the number of correctly identified care needs between some of the groups were identified. Conclusions: Nursing students are not correctly identifying all a patient's fundamental care needs when presented with different care scenarios. Students more frequently identifying physical care needs and less frequently psychosocial and relational needs. The findings suggest educators may need to emphasise and integrate all three dimensions. Relevance to clinical practice: To promote students' ability to identify the integrated nature of the fundamentals of care, practising clinicians and nurse educators need to role model and incorporate all the fundamental care needs for their patients. Abstract: Purpose: This study investigates whether dental hygienists are routinely conducting oral cancer screenings (OCSs) as per their professional capability and responsibility. Factors that may mediate provision of OCSs, and ability to discuss sensitive topics with patients, are also examined. Methods: A pretested online questionnaire was sent via national and provincial regulatory bodies to target practicing registered dental hygienists across Canada. Analysis was conducted using statistical software. Results: Results of 256 surveys were analysed. Sixty‐four per cent of dental hygienists listed an OCS as part of their regular process of care. Except for the initial examination, respondents were significantly more likely to report being responsible for the OCS than the dentist, P<.001. On average, intraoral components are inspected at higher frequencies (96%) than extraoral components (73%). Confidence in OCS technique was high (70%). The majority felt prepared by their education to conduct OCSs (60%), but those with a bachelor's degree felt more prepared than those with a diploma, P=.005. The average time to conduct an OCS is 4.09 minutes, with most agreeing there is sufficient time in an appointment (57%). Only 37% felt their education prepared them to discuss sensitive topics, level of education had no effect, P>.05. Only 43% of respondents felt confident in their human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge and comfortable discussing HPV risk factors with patients. Conclusion: Dental hygienists in this study are regularly conducting OCSs; however, they lack comfort discussing sensitive topics such as transmission of oral HPV, and screenings may not be fully comprehensive. Aims: The objectives of the study were to: (1) examine the relationships between three different qualitative perceptions of safety culture and the Canadian Patient Safety Climate Survey factors; (2) determine whether these perceptions are associated with different hand hygiene practices. Background: Healthcare-associated infections and safety cultures are a worldwide issue. During the A/H1N1 Influenza pandemic, Europe and North America did not have the same responses. Importantly, healthcare professionals' perceptions can influence patient safety through infection prevention practices like hand hygiene. Design: A cross-sectional design was used with data collected in 2015. Methods: The Canadian Patient Safety Culture Survey and hand hygiene observations were gathered from three healthcare centres (two Canadian and one European). Descriptive analyses and ANOVAs were conducted to explore healthcare professionals' safety perceptions and practices. Results: The rates of hand hygiene practices varied widely between the three sites, ranging from 35-77%. One site (Site 3) was found to have the highest scores of management follow-up, feedback about incidents, supervisory leadership for safety, unit learning culture and senior leadership support for safety, and the highest levels of overall patient safety grades for the unit and organization. Conclusion: The quantitative results of this study support the previously described model based on qualitative results: individual culture, blaming culture and collaborative culture. Differences between continents emerged regarding infection prevention practices and the way we qualify infections.
