The experiment has achieved a low energy threshold with improved sensitivity to low-mass (l10 GeV/c2) dark matter particles. We present an analysis of the final CDMSlite dataset, taken with a different detector than was used for the two previous CDMSlite datasets. This analysis includes a data "salting" method to protect against bias, improved noise discrimination, background modeling, and the use of profile likelihood methods to search for a dark matter signal in the presence of backgrounds. We achieve an energy threshold of 70 eV and significantly improve the sensitivity for dark matter particles with masses between 2.5 and 10 GeV/c2 compared to previous analyses. We set an upper limit on the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section in germanium of 5.4×10-42 cm2 at 5 GeV/c2, a factor of ∼2.5 improvement over the previous CDMSlite result.

Abstract

In this letter, we present the performance of a 100 μm × 400 μm × 40 nm W Transition-Edge Sensor with a critical temperature of 40 mK. This device has a noise equivalent power of 1.5 × 1 0 - 18 W / H z , in a bandwidth of 2.6 kHz, indicating a resolution for Dirac delta energy depositions of 40 ± 5 meV (rms). The performance demonstrated by this device is a critical step toward developing a O (100) m e V threshold athermal phonon detector for low-mass dark matter searches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A model for charge trapping and impact ionization and an experiment to measure these parameters are presented for the SuperCDMS HVeV detector. A procedure to isolate and quantify the main sources of noise (bulk and surface charge leakage) in the measurements is also described. Abstract

CDMS II data from the 5-tower runs at the Soudan Underground Laboratory were reprocessed with an improved charge-pulse fitting algorithm. Two new analysis techniques to reject surface-event backgrounds were applied to the 612 kg days germanium-detector WIMP-search exposure. An extended analysis was also completed by decreasing the 10 keV analysis threshold to $\sim$5 keV, to increase sensitivity near a WIMP mass of 8 GeV/$c^2$. After unblinding, there were zero candidate events above a deposited energy of 10 keV and 6 events in the lower-threshold analysis. This yielded minimum WIMP-nucleon spin-independent scattering cross-section limits of $1.8 \times 10^{-44}$ and $1.18 \times 10 ^{-41}$ cm$^2$ at 90\% confidence for 60 and 8.6 GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs, respectively. Exclusion limits on EFT coupling constants computed using the optimum interval method are presented for SuperCDMS Soudan, CDMS II, and LUX, and the necessity of combining results from multiple experiments in order to determine dark matter parameters is discussed. We demonstrate that spectral differences between the standard dark matter model and a general EFT interaction can produce a bias when calculating exclusion limits and when developing signal models for likelihood and machine learning techniques. A background model is constructed using geant4 to simulate the surface-event background from Pb210 decay-chain events, while using independent calibration data to model the gamma background. Fitting this background model to the data results in no statistically significant WIMP component. In addition, we perform fits using an analytic ad hoc background model proposed by Collar and Fields, who claimed to find a large excess of signal-like events in our data. Abstract

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) uses ultrapure germanium detectors at a temperature of approximately 40 mK. These detectors are maintained in a state where shallow impurities are well neutralized. Free electrons and holes, generated by particle events, are “hot” and remain out of equilibrium in the bulk. In this system, carrier drift and diffusion occur simultaneously with the generation of free carriers, and with recombination to localized bulk and surface states. These processes jointly affect the space charge distribution in the bulk and at the surfaces of our detectors. The impact of space charge on the electric field likely accounts for much of the phenomenology found in our detectors. Any ability to predict the evolution of the space charge distribution requires a fundamental understanding of carrier transport processes under our operating conditions. To this end, we have measured carrier drift velocities as a function of electric field in an high-purity CDMS detector of germanium <100> at a temperature of 31 mK. We adapted CDMS electronics to perform a high-bandwidth measurement of charge propagation times for near-surface events in our detector under test. We find that measured velocities coincide reasonably well with predictions made in our previous theory treatment. This indicates that carrier mobility is limited solely by phonon emission. Abstract

Interleaved ionization electrode geometries offer the possibility of efficient rejection of near-surface events. The CDMS collaboration has implemented this interleaved approach for the charge and phonon readout for our germanium detectors. During a recent engineering run with negligible ambient radiation, the detectors were found to lose ionization stability more quickly than expected. This paper summarizes studies done in order to determine the underlying cause of the instability, as well as possible running modes that maintain stability without unacceptable loss of livetime. Additionally, first results are shown for the new version IZIP mask which attempts to improve the overall stability of the detectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) utilizes large mass, 3″ diameter×1″ thick target masses as particle detectors. The target is instrumented with both phonon and ionization sensors, the later providing a ∼1 V cm electric field in the detector bulk. Cumulative radiation exposure which creates ∼200×10 electron-hole pairs could be sufficient to produce a comparable reverse field in the detector thereby degrading the ionization channel performance, if it was not shielded by image charges on the electrodes. To study this, the existing CDMS detector Monte Carlo has been modified to allow for an event by event evolution of the bulk electric field, in three spatial dimensions. We have designed and tested a large-area (0.15 m2) neutron detector based on neutron capture on 6Li. The neutron detector design has been optimized for the purpose of tagging the scattering angle of keV-scale neutrons. These neutron detectors would be employed to calibrate the low-energy (< 100 eV) nuclear recoil in detectors for dark matter and coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering (CE ν NS). We describe the design, construction, and characterization of a prototype. The prototype is designed to have a tagging efficiency of ∼ 25% at the relevant O (keV) neutron energies, and with a mean capture time of ∼ 17 μ s. Abstract: CDMS-II uses detectors known as Z-sensitive ionization phonons (ZIPs) to search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), a very promising candidate for the dark matter in the universe. The most recent data run utilized 12 ZIP detectors (six Ge and six Si) running for year at the Soudan deep underground laboratory (780m below surface), resulting in the current world''s highest sensitivity to WIMP–nucleon coherent interaction [D.S. Akerib, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 211301]. The CDMS-II experiment is approved to run 30 ZIPs until summer 2007 and its goal is to another order of magnitude increase in sensitivity to WIMPs. Abstract: To improve surface event rejection for the SuperCDMS experiment, we have designed, fabricated and tested a new detector concept where ionization electrodes are interleaved with phonon sensors on both sides of the detector. This i-(interleaved)-ZIP concept has electrical fields tangential to all detector surfaces. A surface event will produce an ionization signal in one charge read out channel, whereas an event within the bulk of the crystal will cause a signal in both charge read out channels. In addition, the symmetric phonon channels on both sides of the crystal, two semicircles on one side for and two on the other for , allow three-dimensional reconstruction of event locations through time delays and relative energy collection between the four phonon channels. Abstract

The CDMS and EDELWEISS collaborations have combined the results of their direct searches for dark matter using cryogenic germanium detectors. The total data set represents 614 kg.d equivalent exposure. A straightforward method of combination was chosen for its simplicity before data were exchanged between experiments. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-section. For a WIMP mass of 90 GeV/c^2, where this analysis is most sensitive, a cross-section of 3.3 x 10^{-44} cm^2 is excluded at 90% CL. At higher WIMP masses, the combination improves the individual limits, by a factor 1.6 above 700 GeV/c^2. Alternative methods of combining the data provide stronger constraints for some ranges of WIMP masses and weaker constraints for others., Events, efficiencies, and main limit are available in text format (see README.txt)

Abstract

After 3 years of project study and development, a 40 kg, 62-crystal, thermal detector array CUORICINO started last February. It is supposed to test the two claimed, but still not confirmed, evidences in Dark Matter and in Double Beta Decay (DBD) reported in the last few years and it will have a first glance on Solar Axion. The technical goals that were forseen for this experiment would be the confirmation on the feasibility of the CUORE experiment, a 1 ton multipurpose experiment with bolometers, that could open a new era in DBD physics. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

CUORE is an experiment intended to investigate rare events like the double beta decay and the interaction of cold dark matter and solar axions. It consists of a tightly packed arrayof 1000 TeO2 bolometers, having a mass of 750 g each, operating in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy. A first step towards CUORE is CUORICINO, an experiment with 40.7 kg of TeO2 running since the beginning of 2003 in Gran Sasso. In this paper, the CUORE project is described, the first results of CUORICINO for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Te130 are given, and the physics potential and prospects of both CUORICINO and CUORE are presented.
