An approach to improve the tool wear behaviour of milling tools made of cemented carbide is a defined cutting edge preparation usingthe immersed tumbling process. One significant factor that influences cutting edge preparation is the effective pressure generated by the relative movement of the cutting tools and the abrasive particles. However, the development and influence of the process pressure has been discussed almost exclusively based on machining and preparation results. For a profound process understanding a wireless force measurement system was designed and the pressure forces of two media were examined. The influences of the used lapping media, the velocityas well as the depth of immersion using a simplified linear movement were analysed. Abstract Especially copper-zinc alloys (CuZn) with good machining properties are used for electrical components and fittings. By using copper alloys with lead content of 1 % ≤ Pb ≤ 3 % an improved chip breakage can be achieved. Legal regulations require the reduction of lead and demand further knowledge about the effect of the material properties in interaction with the used micro-milling tools. In this contribution the cutting conditions of copper as well as four copper alloys were examined. The results show considerable differences in the resultant surface roughness and burr formation. Furthermore, the influence of two different tool geometries and variied cutting edge micro-geometries were investigated while machining CuZn21Si3P. Thereby, tools with increased cutting edge radii r β showed increased active forces F a , burr height h 0 and decreased surface roughness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
