In technology and industrial production, many applications require wide-bandwidth current measurements. In this paper, a signal fusion scheme for a current sensor comprising tunneling magnetoresistance and a current transformer is proposed, achieving a flat frequency response in the DC to MHz range. The measurement principles in different cases of the scheme are introduced, and the total transfer function of the entire scheme is derived by analyzing each section separately. Furthermore, the feasibility and selected parameters of the scheme are verified through a systematic simulation utilizing the MATLAB software. Based on the proposed scheme, a group of principal prototypes are built to experimentally evaluate the bandwidth, amplitude and phase flatness, accuracy, sensitivity, and impulse response. The relative amplitude variation in the passband of the fusion sensor is less than 4%, and the estimated bandwidth of the fusion sensor is close to 17 MHz. The accuracy is better than 0.6%, even when measuring the current at 1 MHz, and the relative standard deviation is 5% when measuring the impulse signal. Current transformers (CTs) are widely used for energy metering, relay protection, condition monitoring and control circuits. However, CT saturation may lead to non‐negligible measurement errors and relay malfunctions, posing a threat to the stability and security of the power grid. In order to address the problem of CT saturation, a novel measurement‐protection‐integrated current transformer (MPICT) is proposed. First, the working states of the MPICT are summarised and the approximate expressions for the steady‐state measuring characteristics, the transient response characteristics, and the measurement errors are derived from the equivalent circuit model. Then, the feasibility of the MPICT and the theoretical analyses are verified by the 3D FEM simulation imitating the presented MPICT excited by diverse currents. Finally, a down‐scale prototype is fabricated and a series of tests are conducted in the laboratory to validate the effectiveness of the equipment. The simulation and experimental results suggest that the output of the MPICT can accurately reconstruct the primary current waveform, even if the primary current contains decaying or constant DC component. The object of research is a three-phase electricity metering unit, which includes a digital meter and measuring current transformers. The reduction of non-technological energy losses is restrained due to the insufficient accuracy of the accounting of electric energy in distribution power networks under a reduced load current of the metering unit. The possibility of representing the dependence of the relative error of electricity measurement on current values by a fuzzy function at reduced load has been confirmed. The boundaries of such a function are approximated with sufficient accuracy by the sum of two exponents, which is explained by its significant nonlinearity in the range of reduced current. The proposed EMRL software allows to estimate the real consumption and the most possible level of underaccounting based on the array of electricity meter readings. The accuracy of estimating by the EMRL the amount of electricity consumed with a probability of 0.7 can be estimated with a relative error not exceeding 2 %. The probability of psychophysical assessments of the accuracy of EMRL «very good» and «good» is at least 0.833. The trend of a significant decrease in the relative value of underaccounting with an increase in the level of electricity consumption was revealed. With a daily consumption of up to 10 kW·h, the amount of underaccounting can reach 18 %, and with a consumption of more than 20 kW·h, it does not exceed 6 %. The adequacy of the results of estimating the amount of consumed electricity at reduced load using the EMRL was confirmed by experimental data at a significance level of 0.05. The software capabilities allow to increase the accuracy of the accounting of electrical energy in distribution networks with a reduced load current of the metering unit. With the deep penetration of renewable energy and power electronic equipment, the overcurrent protection of an intelligent miniature circuit breaker faces new challenges. The electronic controller of an intelligent miniature circuit breaker is typically powered by the bus current rather than the phase voltage to ensure a robust overcurrent protection response under all conditions, including severe short-circuit faults. So, the performance of the current transformer serving as an energy harvesting unit and the corresponding direct current to direct current convention circuit is one of the critical issues due to the limited volume of an intelligent miniature circuit breaker. In this research, a finite element model of a current transformer for an intelligent miniature circuit breaker is constructed by COMSOL to evaluate the impact of the core material, the core size, and the number of coil turns on the energy harvesting capability of the current transformer. Meanwhile, the relationship between the output of the power supply and its design parameters is investigated by circuit simulation. As a result, a novel type of current transformer is proposed based on well-designed parameters. Finally, experimental tests have been conducted to verify the hysteresis characteristics, output characteristics, and energy harvesting effect. The results demonstrate that the hysteresis properties of the transformer align with the simulation results. The problem of getting rid of expensive and metal-intensive current transformers has been declared by CIGRE as strategically important for the electric power industry. However, almost all traditional current protections receive information from measuring current transformers. In this work, a resource-saving reed switch overcurrent protection without current transformers is suggested, which can be used as an alternative to traditional current protections for 6–10 kV electrical installations connected to a switchgear cell. The protection is designed following the novel method we have developed based on inductance coils. Inductance coils measure the electromotive force under different operation modes of an electrical installation and at different points inside the switchgear cell it is connected to; the EMF values are recalculated in the values of magnetic induction, and reed switches are mounted instead of inductance coils at the points where the magnetic induction is maximal. Moreover, these values are sufficient to detect phase-to-phase short circuits in the electrical installation. The dependence of the induction value on the position of an inductance coil inside the cell is derived with the use of the simplest formula of the Biot–Savart law. The results can be used at large and small industrial enterprises, electric power stations, and substations of plants; they can be interesting for the scientific community because they help to solve the topical problem of the electric power industry. The DC bias may affect the transient transfer characteristics of the current transformer (CT), threatening the correct action of the relay protection and the safe operation of the power system. Compared with the high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission in the unipolar-earth loop operation mode and geomagnetically induced current (GIC), the amplitude of the stray current is smaller, and the randomness and fluctuation are larger and accompanied by sudden changes. Combining the characteristics of stray current and the CT equivalent model considering the eddy current loss of the iron core, the mechanism of local transient saturation under the influence of bias magnetization is explained, and the CT saturation phenomenon caused by stray current and its effect on line distance protection are simulated and analyzed. The research shows that the influence of low amplitude and high duration of stray current will make the magnetic flux of CT grow and affect the transmission of steady-state and transient-state so that the measurement impedance appears amplitude-phase shift, which leads to under-range rejection of distance protection. This paper reports on the testing and evaluation of a passive autoranging (AR) method designed to dynamically extend the measurement range of a photonic current transducer (PCT) to pave the way toward a realization of a combined metering- and protection-class current sensor. The PCT utilizes a current transformer (CT), a piezoelectric transducer (PZT), and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) to enable current measurement at multiple points in an electrical power network whereby multiple sensors are deployed and interrogated serially using a single optical fiber. The autoranging technique relies on incorporating static MOSFET switches to instantaneously short individual serially connected CT burdens in response to a measured current magnitude exceeding pre-set thresholds. The AR circuit switching events produce distinctive signal features that are used by the proposed switching algorithm to apply appropriate scaling factors to reconstruct the measured current from the optical signal. It is shown through laboratory experiments that the AR circuit correctly reacts to pre-set burden current thresholds of 130% of the nominal value and 22 times the nominal value, signifying its "metering" and "protection" range boundaries. The circuit reaction time is below 4 ms, rendering it suitable for standard power system protection purposes. Moreover, the operation of the AR circuit is demonstrated for burden currents of up to 100 A for over 1 s, satisfying a test procedure for the secondary CT circuit, as required by some power system operators. It is demonstrated that the proposed switching algorithm allows for a correct reconstruction of the burden currents from the optical signal acquired by the FBG interrogator, offering the potential to realize a dual-class optical current sensor. An online measurement method is proposed in this paper, and a system is established for detecting the excitation impedance of current transformers (CTs) based on Norton's theorem. The theorem is carried out by connecting a resistance and an inductance at the secondary side port of the CT to get the equations for calculating the impedance. The iterative method is used to solve the equations, and the solution is revised to consider the nonlinearity of the core. The main variable in the equations is the variation of the secondary current with the resistance or inductance. To obtain the secondary current variation accurately, which is less than 1‰ of the current, a differential method is proposed, which is based on charging two capacitors and measuring the difference of their voltages instead of measuring each current separately first and then obtaining the current variation by subtraction. This is equivalent to saving two currents first and then measuring the current difference. The differential method avoids the problem of error amplification in the process of measuring two currents separately first and then subtracting them to obtain the current variation and solves the problem that two currents do not appear simultaneously. The results verify the correctness and accuracy of the proposed method and system. The acquisition of the excitation impedance is the basis for obtaining the working characteristics of CT cores, including magnetic and loss characteristics, as well as the error of CTs. One of the tasks in the operation of electric power systems is the correct functioning of the protection system and emergency automation algorithms. Instrument voltage and current transformers, operating in accordance with the laws of electromagnetism, are most often used for information support of the protection system and emergency automation algorithms. Magnetic core saturation of the specified current transformers can occur during faults. As a result, the correct functioning of the protection system and emergency automation algorithms is compromised. The consequences of current transformers saturation are mostly reflected in the main protections of network elements operating on a differential principle. This work aims to consider the analysis of current transformer saturation detection methods. The problem of identifying current transformer saturation is reduced to binary classification, and methods for solving the problem based on artificial neural networks, support vector machine, and decision tree algorithms are proposed. Computational experiments were performed, and their results were analyzed with imbalanced (dominance of the number of current transformer saturation modes over the number of modes with its normal operation) and balanced classes 0 (no current transformer saturation) and 1 (current transformer saturation). A bias current in the power system will cause saturation of the measuring current transformer (CT), leading to an increase in measurement error. Therefore, in this paper, we first conducted measurements of the direct current component in a 10 kV distribution system. Subsequently, a reverse extraction method for the CT distorted current under direct current bias conditions based on Random Forest Classification (RFC) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) was proposed. This method involves two stages for the reverse extraction of CT distorted currents under direct current bias conditions. In the offline stage, data samples were generated by changing the operating environment of the CT. The RFC classification algorithm was used to divide the saturation levels of the CT, and for each sub-class, Particle Swarm Optimization–Long Short-Term Memory Network (PSO-LSTM) models were trained to establish the mapping relationship between the secondary distorted current and the primary current fundamental component. In the online stage, the saturated data segments were extracted from the secondary current waveform using wavelet transform, and these segments were input into the offline model for current reverse extraction. The simulation results show that the proposed method exhibited strong robustness under various CT conditions, and achieved high reconstruction accuracy for the primary current. The aim of this paper is to show that the developed inductive current transformer may ensure the required wideband transformation accuracy and it may be applied, as the reference source, in the measuring system for the evaluation of the transformation accuracy of inductive current transformers for harmonics of distorted current. This device ensures 5 A and 1 A RMS secondary currents to provide the opportunity to use the differential measuring setup. Such solutions are characterized by the significantly reduced measurement uncertainty in relation to the comparative measurements made between two current/voltage channels. The problems required to ensure the high wideband transformation accuracy, including the self-generation phenomenon of the low order higher harmonics to the secondary current and a too-low frequency range of operation, were overcome in the design process. The values of its ratio error and the phase displacement of the developed reference wideband inductive current transformer did not exceed ±0.2%/° up to 1 kHz, ±0.4%/° from 1 kHz up to 1.5 kHz and ±0.5%/° from 1.5 kHz up to 3 kHz, as is required to perform the test procedure in accordance with the optional requirements for the inductive current transformers defined in the new edition of the standard IEC 61869-1. The internal electric field distribution is a key factor to characterize the partial discharge and voltage resistance of current transformers (CTs), and the conical current transformer has a special structure with complex electric field distribution. Therefore, it is more necessary to study, analyze and optimize the electric field distribution of CTs in the design process. In this paper, a new type of current transformer is taken as the research object. A simulation model is established by using finite element software, and the electric field distribution under the test of power-frequency withstand voltage is investigated. Then, a scheme is proposed, and the response surface is used to optimize the scheme. Experimental verification is conducted to validate the results. In this study, the finite element combined design of experiment approach can serve as a rapid and efficient approach for identifying an optimal solution to minimize the electric field strength within a current transformer. This paper presents the evaluation of tested inductive CTs' accuracy for distorted current harmonics in accordance with the optional accuracy class WB1 introduced by the new edition of the standard IEC 61869-1 published in the year 2023. The tests were performed in compliance with the interpretation sheet IEC 61869-2:2012/ISH1:2022. Therefore, the resistive and the resistive–inductive loads of the secondary winding of tested inductive CTs were used, as this was required for the given test conditions. The results indicate that the units designed for the transformation of a sinusoidal current of a frequency of 50 Hz ensure the high wideband transformation accuracy of the distorted current harmonics, as demanded by the power quality monitoring and distorted electrical power and energy requirements. The key to this is proper design using modern magnetic material(s) for the magnetic core and its oversizing in relation to the requirements for a given accuracy class defined for the transformation of sinusoidal currents with a rated frequency. Both tested inductive CTs with a rated primary current RMS value equal to 300 A, class 0.2 and 0.5, ensured compliance with the requirements of the WB1 wideband accuracy class. Transformers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of power grids. It is of great value to diagnose faults using the large amount of power data generated by the grid. It is possible to detect internal latent faults in transformers in advance of their occurrence if the normal operating condition of the transformer is detected in a timely manner. To perform online fault diagnosis of grid current transformers, we combine the Transformer and BiGRU methods. There is a temporal component to the fault input sample sequences. By using Transformer's multi-headed attention mechanism to extract deep features from fault input sample sequences, the temporal association between latent variables can be fully exploited. As a result of the extraction of features, BiGRU is used to generate fault category coding as an output. The experimental results indicate that using the proposed algorithm achieves better results than using a single model, which is useful for the study and application of fault diagnosis in power grids for current transformers. In this review article, ideas for the development of measuring methods and setups to test inductive instrument transformer accuracy for the transformation of distorted current or voltage are analyzed. This article proposes limiting values for ratio error and phase displacement at harmonics. Moreover, the manuscript discusses some remarks about the required test waveform of voltage and current, as well as the operating conditions of the inductive instrument transformer during the test. This includes designation of the number of harmonics, their RMS values and phase angles in relation to the fundamental component, as well as the required load of the VT's and CT's secondary winding. With the growing adoption of wide bandgap devices in power electronic applications, current sensor design for switching current measurement has become more important. The demands for high accuracy, high bandwidth, low cost, compact size, and galvanic isolation pose significant design challenges. The conventional modeling approach for bandwidth analysis of current transformer sensors assumes that the magnetizing inductance remains constant, which does not always hold true in high-frequency operations. This can result in inaccurate bandwidth estimation and affect the overall performance of the current sensor. To address this limitation, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of nonlinear modeling and bandwidth, considering the varying magnetizing inductance in a wide frequency range. A precise and straightforward arctangent-based fitting algorithm was proposed to accurately emulate the nonlinear feature, and the fitting results were compared with the magnetic core's datasheet to confirm its accuracy. This approach contributes to more accurate bandwidth prediction in field applications. In addition, the droop phenomenon of the current transformer and saturation effects are analyzed in detail. For high-voltage applications, different insulation methods are compared and an optimized insulation process is proposed. Finally, the design process is experimentally validated. The bandwidth of the proposed current transformer is around 100 MHz and the cost is around $20, making it a low-cost and high-bandwidth solution for switching current measurements in power electronic applications. This paper presents a newly developed method to determine the values of current error and phase displacement for the transformation of distorted current harmonics by the inductive current transformers. This approach eliminates the necessity for the utilization of an expensive, high-current supply system for the measuring setup. In this method, the secondary winding is fed by the distorted voltage with RMS values of harmonics calculated in order to reproduce the operation point of the inductive current transformer on the magnetization characteristic of its magnetic core, as in primary winding excitation conditions. This proposed approach is successfully verified with the typically used primary current excitation method, where the secondary currents of the reference and tested current transformers are compared in the differential measuring setup. It was confirmed that the inductive CT with current error and phase displacement for transformation of distorted current harmonics determined in the rated ampere-turns conditions may be effectively used in the measuring setup as the reference source of the primary current. Preventive maintenance in the transformer is performed through a differential relay protection system, and it protects the transformer from internal and external faults. However, the Current Transformer (CT) in the differential protection system mal-operates during inrush currents. CT saturates due to magnetizing inrush currents and causes false tripping of the differential relays. Moreover, identification of tripping in protection relay either due to inrush current or internal faults needs to be diagnosed. For the above problem, continuous monitoring of transformer breather and CT terminals with thermal camera helps detect the tripping in relay due to inrush or internal fault. The transformer's internal fault leads to high breathing process in the transformer breather, never for inrush currents. During inrush currents, CT temperature is increased. Continuous monitoring of breather and CT of the transformer through thermal imaging and radiometric pixels detect the causes of CT saturation and differentiates maloperation. Hybrid wavelet threshold image analytics (HWT-IA) based radiometric pixels analysis of the transformer breather and CT after de-noising provides an accurate result of about 95% for identification of the false tripping of differential protection system of transformer. The article elaborates on the accuracy of current transformers (CT) in interaction with temperature and frequency using Pearson's correlation. The first part of the analysis compares the accuracy of the mathematical model of the current transformer and the result of the measurement on the real CT using the Pearson correlation calculation. The mathematical model of CT is determined by deriving the formula of the functional error with the display of the accuracy of the measured value. The accuracy of the mathematical model is affected by the accuracy of current transformer model parameters and the calibration characteristic of the ammeter used to measure the CT current. Variables that cause deviation in the accuracy of CT are temperature and frequency. The calculation shows the effects on accuracy in both cases. The second part of the analysis refers to the calculation of the partial correlation of three quantities: (1) CT accuracy, (2) temperature, and (3) frequency on a set of 160 measurements. First, the influence of temperature on the correlation of CT accuracy and frequency is proven, following the proof of the influence of frequency on the correlation of CT accuracy and temperature. Malfunctions in relay protection devices are predominantly caused by current transformer (CT) saturation which produces distortion in current measurements and disturbances in power system protection. The development of deep learning in power system protection is on the rise recently because of its robustness. This study presents a CT saturation detection where the secondary current becomes distorted. The proposed scheme offers a wide range of saturation detection and consists of a moving-window technique and stacked denoising autoencoders. Moreover, Bayesian optimization was used to minimize the difficulty of determining neural network structure for the proposed approach. The performance of the algorithm was evaluated for a-g faults on 154 kV and 345 kV overhead transmission line in South Korea. The waveform variation has been generated by PSCAD for different scenarios that heavily influence CT saturation. Moreover, a comparative analysis with other methods demonstrated the superiority of the proposed DNN method. With the proposed algorithm to detect CT saturation, it significantly yielded high accuracy and precision for CT saturation detection which were approximately 99.71% and 99.32%, respectively. Current transformer saturation affects measurement accuracy and, consequently, protection reliability. One important concern in the case of overcurrent protections is the discrimination between faults and inrush current in power transformers. This paper presents an FPGA-based smart sensor to detect current transformer saturation, especially during inrush current conditions. Several methods have been proposed in the literature, but some are unsuitable for inrush currents due to their particular waveform. The proposed algorithm implemented on the smart sensor uses two time-domain features of the measured secondary current: the second-order difference function and the third-order statistic central moment. The proposed smart sensor presents high effectiveness and immunity against noise with accurate results in different conditions: different residual flux, resistive burdens, sampling frequency, and noise levels. The points at which saturation starts are detected with an accuracy of approximately 100%. Regarding the end of saturation, the proposed method detects the right ending points with a maximum error of a sample. The smart sensor has been tested on experimental online and real-time conditions (including an anti-aliasing filter) with accurate results. Unlike most existing methods, the proposed smart sensor operates efficiently during inrush conditions. In this paper, we present a novel technique for passively autoranging a photonic current transducer (PCT) that incorporates a current transformer (CT), piezoelectric transducer (PZT) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Due to the usage of single-mode fiber and FBG, multiple PCTs can be interconnected and distributed over a long distance, for example along a power network, greatly reducing the cost of sensor deployment and offering other unique advantages. The autoranging technique relies on the usage of multiple, serially connected CT burden resistors and associated static MOSFET switches to realize instantaneous shortening of the resistors in response to increasing measured current. This functionality is realized passively, utilizing a modular, μW-power comparator circuit that powers itself from the electrical energy supplied by the CT within a small fraction of the 50/60 Hz cycle. The resultant instantaneous changes in sensor gain will be ultimately detected by the central FBG interrogator through real-time analysis of the optical signals and will be used to apply appropriate gain scaling for each sensor. The technique will facilitate the usage of a single PCT to cover an extended dynamic range of the measurement that is required to realize a combined metering- and protection-class current sensor. This paper is limited to the description of the design process, construction, and testing of a prototype passive autoranging circuitry for integration with the PCT. The two-stage circuitry that is based on two burden resistors, 1 Ω and 10 Ω, is used to prove the concept and demonstrate the practically achievable circuit characteristics. It is shown that the circuit correctly reacts to input current threshold breaches of approximately 2 A and 20 A within a 3 ms reaction time. The object of the research is a measuring current transformer of the electromagnetic type, which is used as part of the electricity metering unit. The current transformers functioning in the mode of reduced primary current is accompanied by significant errors. The existence of such a regime for a long time due to downtime of production equipment leads to a significant underestimation of electricity. This leads to unjustified financial losses for energy supply companies as electricity in many countries has become more expensive. The static characteristic of the measuring current transformer at a reduced load of the metering unit is described by a linear statistical model. The parameters of the model are estimated on the basis of empirical data using methods of covariance analysis. The adequacy of the model is confirmed by analysis of regression residuals. The obtained statistical model of the static characteristic, unlike the known ones, is characterized by universality, as it describes current transformers with an arbitrary transformation ratio within the studied accuracy class of 0.5S. The uncertainty of the current error is estimated using the prediction intervals for the transformers secondary currents as a function of the primary currents, calculated on the basis of the obtained model. The prediction intervals for sample values of the current error were obtained through the application of the proposed approach for uncertainty estimation of such an error at a reduced load of the metering unit. It was found that the current error can reach –20 %. Taking into account the indicated intervals for measuring current transformers at a reduced load of the metering unit during billing will allow energy supply companies to increase the accuracy of commercial electricity metering. This paper presents the performance of the 26 kVA inductive high-current transformer (HCT) during operation in the frequencies range of transformed harmonics from 50 Hz to 5 kHz. Performed research concerns the determination of the possibility of obtaining an order of the higher harmonic of a given RMS value in its distorted output current for the required RMS value of the main component and the maximum safe instantaneous value of the input voltage equal to 400 V. The results are presented for serial, serial-parallel and parallel configurations of primary and secondary windings (9 cases). Therefore, the most favourable configuration of the primary and secondary windings sections may be chosen. The tests are performed for the transformation of the distorted current containing a fundamental component and one higher harmonic of order from the 5th changed by the 5 up to the 100th. The constant 10% higher harmonic level in relation to the main component of the distorted secondary current is set. Electronically enhanced current transformers (EECT) have gained much interest in power quality assessment. Their magnitude and phase angle error, which mainly relates to the properties of the ferromagnetic materials used, the impedance of the secondary load, and the inter-turns capacitance, are thoroughly analyzed. In contrast, the capacitance between the windings, i.e., inter-winding capacitances and their limiting effects on EECT operation, are rarely analyzed in detail—in particular, no details on the control design of the assisting electronic unit, its tuning recommendations, or both are provided. In this paper, the capacitive coupling between indication and compensating winding of EECT with simplified feedthrough construction is analyzed thoroughly in terms of current ratio error and stability of the implemented configuration of the trans-conductance amplifier. The preliminary assumption about the adverse effect of the inter-winding capacitance shunting both ends of the original amplifier, composed of two series-connected inverting amplifier stages, was confirmed and resolved within a modified amplifier with the help of a simplified simulation model and was experimentally proven with measurements on a custom-built EECT prototype. Furthermore, the analyzed phenomena were linked to trans-conductance amplifier parameters, explicitly with its compensating networks, and summarized in their design guidelines. Throughout the paper, the EECT features obtained with original and modified amplifier designs are compared with the plain composite current transformer to demonstrate the benefits of the modified amplifier, especially its robustness against inter-winding capacitance variations. This manuscript presents performed laboratory studies and the analysis of the impact of current shunt values used in the differential connection on the wideband metrological performance of inductive current transformers. Moreover, a comparison of the accuracy of wideband and 50 Hz-type inductive current transformers in the specified frequency range from 50 Hz to 5 kHz is presented. The main factor which may influence the wideband accuracy of inductive current transformers is the phenomenon of self-generation. This causes rapid changes in the accuracy, and simultaneously causes the most positive and the most negative values of current error and phase displacement. To evaluate the metrological performance in the differential measurement setup for higher harmonics of the distorted current, a digital acquisition board was used. Obtained results show that if proper values of current shunt resistance are chosen, such devices may be used to evaluate the wideband accuracy of inductive current transformers. The results indicate that the typical units designed for the transformation of sinusoidal current with a frequency of 50 Hz can achieve a comparable metrological performance to that of the wideband inductive current transformer. In this paper, we present an investigation into the influence of the load power factor of secondary winding on the metrological performance of inductive CTs with frequencies from 50 Hz to 5 kHz of the harmonic of a transformed distorted current. The results clearly indicated that the inductive load caused a deterioration in the transformation accuracy of the inductive CT. To ensure the most advantageous conditions of their operation, a resistive load should be used. The inductive CTs for the frequencies of the transformed harmonic of a distorted primary current from 50 Hz to 5 kHz may ensure the accuracy class designated for the transformation of the sinusoidal current of a frequency of 50 Hz with the same limiting values of errors. Moreover, an analysis of the generated low-order harmonics by a 300 A/5 A CT determined for the power factor of 0.8 inductive and 1.0 of the secondary winding was investigated. These results for the transformed distorted currents of 3rd, 5th and 7th higher harmonics were evaluated for a rated load and 25% of this value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inductive current transformers are characterized by different transformation accuracies for higher harmonics of distorted primary currents. Therefore, it is highly required to perform the tests of their metrological properties to choose the best unit that ensures the lowest values of current error and phase displacement. This study presents a comparison of two manufactured inductive current transformers. The results indicate that some inductive current transformers may be used to accurately transform distorted currents, enabling proper distortion of power metering and quality evaluation. However, to obtain adequate transformation properties in the wide frequency range, the cross-section of the magnetic core of the inductive current transformer should be oversized. Moreover, it is required to use a permalloy magnetic core instead of the typical transformer steel core. In the analyzed case, the metrological performance depends mainly on its accuracy for transforming the main component of the distorted primary current and self-generation of the low-order higher harmonics. The paper presents investigations and analysis of the parameters of the magnetic part of the equivalent circuit of the inductive CT in the frequencies range from 50 Hz to 5 kHz. Therefore, a measuring circuit used to determine the values of the transverse branch elements was developed. The research performed helps to understand the obtained values of the frequency characteristics of the current error and phase displacement of the corrected inductive current transformer. Moreover, the vectorial diagrams for the 1st, 20th and 100th harmonics are provided with consideration of the influence of the applied turns number correction of the secondary winding. The obtained results show that the increase in the frequency of transformed higher harmonics may cause a decrease in the values of the current error and phase displacement for the non-corrected inductive current transformer. However, if the number of turns of the secondary winding is corrected, the behavior is reversed, where the values of the current error are higher with increased frequency. High-frequency current transformers (HFCT) are widely used to measure fast transient current. Their advantages are simple structure and relatively moderate price. Their lower and upper bandwidth are limited, but the HFCT can be easily applied to many measuring applications in power electronics. The disadvantages of HFCT are substantial dimensions and a large weight. The paper proposes a system of a cascade connection of two transformers, which allows us to reduce these disadvantages. The properties of such an HFCT combination were investigated and described. In the article, the expression for double current transformer transmittances is derived. The frequency response of the sensor was determined, and the results were verified in a practical arrangement. An experimental setup of a cascade CT connection was made and tested, allowing for fast-changing signals in transients to be measured. We developed a novel artificial line circuit that compensates for the time delay of the transient recovery voltage (TRV) for a short‐line fault (SLF) interruption test and an analysis system that automatically extracts each parameter on the SLF line characteristics from the measured waveform with high precision. This new circuit and system can drastically improve the time efficiency for the adjustment and calculation of the prospective line‐side TRV condition, which is carried out before the main test, as compared to conventional methods. In general, a power transformer is equipped with differential protection relay with the second harmonic restraint criterion to improve reliability. However, this criterion may fail in some cases, resulting in incorrect operation of protection relay. Therefore, to further upgrade the performance of differential protection, this paper proposes a duty cycle-based scheme as complement. Firstly, the waveform of the differential current in one cycle and its two derived waveforms, constructed by translating and taking absolute, are transformed into corresponding square waves, respectively. Then, duty cycles of these square waves are calculated, and three criteria are presented to quantify the differences between the duty cycles of disturbances and faults. Finally, the criteria and the second harmonic restraint are combined through three logic gates to form the proposed scheme for protection. A large number of simulation experiments have verified the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, which outperforms the frequently used protection schemes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current transformers reduce large current values to measurable current values in electrical systems and provide isolation of various measuring instruments and relays from the main electrical system. Voltage current transformers are produced according to the tests defined in national and international standards during the production phase. In order for the relays used for protection in electrical systems to work correctly, medium voltage current transformers must be within the verified operating range. For this reason, it becomes very important for current transformers to work correctly. In case the main current has a harmonic structure, the operating range of the protection type medium voltage current transformers can change significantly. In this paper, it the steady-state thermal performance behaviour in a medium voltage current transformer is studied and analysed. The study was carried out considering four different loads. The numerical results of the temperature distribution were obtained using a 2D finite element software package. The iron losses in the core region were calculated using the maximum flux density that was obtained with a 2D finite element software package. A concern with the isolation transformer in a dual active bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter is the dc bias in magnetization. This article proposes a fluxgate-based current sensor to measure the dc component mixed with a large, high-frequency ac current. Compared with a commercial Hall effect current sensor, the proposed sensor significantly reduces measurement error. This article presents the working principle and design considerations. The auxiliary power supply (APS) is one of the critical components inside medium-voltage (MV) power converters. Besides high insulation capability and small footprint, low common-mode (CM) coupling capacitance and multichannel output are the desired features of APS in the emerging silicon-carbide-based MV converters due to their fast switching speed. This article presents the design and optimization procedure of a high-density isolated APS using an LCCL-LC resonant topology with an operating frequency of 1 MHz. The proposed design procedure attains consistent soft-switching operation under a random number of output channels. The galvanic isolation is realized by a current-fed single-turn 1 MHz transformer that can achieve a breakdown voltage of over 20 kV while maintaining a small size. Design optimization on the insulation system of the current transformer is proposed to obtain both high partial-discharge inception voltage (PDIV) and low coupling capacitance. Finally, two versions of APSs are developed, using air and silicone as dielectric materials, which can reach PDIV of over 5 and 16 kV, respectively. The corresponding coupling capacitances are 1.86 pF and 3.6 pF. Both designs can provide a maximum power of 20 W on the receiving side, and 120 W on the sending side. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to ensure the safety and reliability of power system, more and more monitoring and maintenance equipment on transmission lines are being used. However, these equipment would not work without the supply of power. At present, the current transformer has been widely used in the on line power acquisition device. As an important part of the current transformer, the performance magnetic core has great influence on the power acquisition. In this paper, the core parameters of the current transformer in the on-line power acquisition device are designed, and the parameters such as core material and air gap length are optimized and verified by simulation as well. The classification is carried out and the characteristics, capabilities and disadvantages of the known methods of programmed correction of the output current of a single-phase primary measuring channel (PMC) of the current are determined. A discretized model of short-circuit current (SCC) is proposed. A method and an algorithm for increasing the accuracy of a threephase current PMC in transient modes of electric power systems (EPS) under the condition of saturation of the magnetic circuits of its phase current transformers have been developed. The reliability of the developed method is confirmed by simulation of the PMC output current under the condition of phase-to-phase short-circuit of phases A and B without correction and with correction of its phase currents. It is shown that the developed method makes it possible to reduce the total error of the PMC in the transient modes of the EES under the condition of saturation of the magnetic circuits of the CT from 70-90% to 6-15%. The current transformer that was located in the neutral of the capacitor bank of the bus section 3A-3B of the Tallapiedra 110/13,8 kV substation was completely destroyed, and some units were also damaged, starting by a phase to neutral short-circuit and ending as a three phase short-circuit. Using mathematical modeling, several scenarios were simulated to find the cause for which this equipment failed. It was found that it was not capable of withstand the dynamic current that was experience for each of the scenarios that were analyzed. Properly dimensioning the overcurrent dynamic capacity for these equipments is of vital importance to prevent failures like the one that occurred or change the type of current transformer for a window or toroidal type, since the primary current does not physically circulate through these. In some conditions, the flux in the core of current transformers (CT) increases. If this increase in flux leads to saturation of the protective core, it can create a lot of problems in power system protection. One of the hardware solutions to prevent the occurrence of core saturation in CT is the fixed switched resistor demagnetization method. Due to disadvantages such as dependence on CT parameters and inefficiencies in severe core saturation, the use of this method has not been expanded. This paper proposes a new method to improve the fixed switched resistor demagnetization method. In the proposed method, instead of using a fixed resistor in the circuit topology, an adjustable resistor with an auxiliary transformer is used. In the previous method, the control process is based on flux estimation from the secondary terminal voltage. The control process in the proposed method is based on the second derivative of CT secondary current. To verify the effectiveness of the suggested method, first simulation is done using COMSOL and MATLAB softwares and then all necessary electronic and control circuitry are designed and built. Experimental test is carried out on a 20 kV- 500/5 A CT. The simulation and experimental results show that this method prevents the CT from saturation in case of short circuit faults. Current transformers (CTs) are extensively used in electrical switchyards and substations for metering and protection purposes [1] and are expected to operate properly for at least 30 years [2]. Normally, aging of CTs under service conditions is relatively slow, but they also may fail prematurely due to various reasons, such as design faults, inadequate quality during manufacture, lightning strikes, operation beyond rated conditions and inadequate maintenance [3]. Compared with other high voltage apparatus, failure of a CT can be violent or even catastrophic, causing damages to the CT itself as well as to nearby located assets and humans [4–9]. Build-up of internal pressure during a failure of a CT results in an instant fire due to burning of oil and explosion of porcelain housing, where porcelain pieces can spread to a distance up to 100 m [4], [6]. For the nonlinear problems caused by the hysteresis characteristics of current transformer, this paper proposes a nonlinear regression correction algorithm based on support vector machine to implement the output voltage waveform modeling of current transformer, parameter optimization and linear regression to achieve nonlinear correction. With support vector machine algorithm for fitting and simulating the output of the current transformer model, compared with BP neural network, support vector machine algorithm has better ability in nonlinear fitting, and the fitting error is less than 3.987e － 05. On the basis of constructing the regression model, the least square method was used to establish the linear function relation between the K value parameter and the output voltage, which realizes the accurate calculation of the current transformer input current. This method reduces the average squared error of the current transformer nonlinear output waveform to 0. 434 9, and the phase error is less than 1.64%, which corrects the distortion waveform, and improves the measurement accuracy of the current transformer.
