Cultural tourism, which includes the values of cultural heritage, aims to contribute by focusing on the values of cultural heritage, its promotion and protection. Kosovo as a tourist region in terms of cultural heritage is divided into seven cultural heritage regions: Prishtina Region, consisting of 118 heritage cities, Prizren Region, consisting of 500 heritage monuments, Peja Region, consisting of 856 monuments of cultural and natural heritage; Mitrovica region, consisting of 64 assets; The region of Gjakova, consisting of 148 monuments of all categories; The region of Gjilan, consisting of 174 monuments placed under temporary protection; and the Ferizaj region consists of 130 assets on the list of Cultural Heritage for temporary protection. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of cultural heritage in the development of tourism as an economical asset in Kosovo. Kosovo has many attractions and natural beauty, presents special cultural values from different periods and a favorable climate, which contribute and have potential in the development of different types of selective tourism. In order to determine if and to what extent cultural heritage in Kosovo is a factor in attracting foreign tourists, this research includes 300 foreign tourists, as well as the coefficient of determination and correlation between the attractiveness of cultural heritage and the motivation of foreign tourists to visit Kosovo. The coefficient of determination of 0.687 and the correlation coefficient of 0.829 between the attractiveness of cultural heritage and the motivation of foreign tourists to visit Kosovo indicate a very strong direct relationship between these two variables. The abandonment of inhabited places is a phenomenon widespread on a global scale that has spanned centuries. It has led to the birth of the so-called 'ghost towns'. These lifeless sites dot the internal Mediterranean and European areas, testifying to the changeability of the human settlements. Through a vision that reverses the paradigm that epitomises the 'ghost towns', these places can be transformed from a problem into an opportunity for the development of the territories that host them. The main topic of this article is to present and update investigations performed on three abandoned settlements sited in Portugal, Italy, and Albania in view of their tourist exploitation, considering three different tailored strategies: underwater tourism, dark tourism, and heritage tourism. For each site, we analysed the site history, the abandonment causes, and the territorial-geological features, thus arguing for the possible valorisation and enjoyment approaches with special attention to digital technologies, which are highly underexploited in the sector. This study, which is part of an international research landscape still in the initial stages, falls within the BEGIN project (aBandonment vErsus reGeneratIoN), which aims to develop a multilevel methodological–operational protocol useful in regional, national, EU, and non-EU contexts for the dissemination of knowledge, conservation, regeneration, valorisation, management, and fruition of areas classified as a 'ghost town'. Felt, one of the primary handicrafts of the Turks, stands as a significant cultural relic for the enduringly nomadic Kyrgyz populace. The art of felting to be up-to-date and popular in today's Kyrgyz society with its variety of uses by adapting to the dynamics of the modern age. Therefore, it is important to examine the evolution of felt in Kyrgyz culture from the past to the present and explore the areas where the tradition of felting is sustained in the modern era. Felt is one of the oldest handcrafts in Kyrgyz culture, and it plays a crucial role in preserving tradition, sustaining culture, and promoting cultural diversity and sustainability. Moreover, embroidery on felt items conveys information about Kyrgyz history, philosophy, lifestyle, mentality, and values. In this context, the present research endeavors to shed light on the role of felt in Kyrgyzstan's cultural economy and tourism, tracking its evolution from the past to the present day. In other words, it examines the significance of felt within Kyrgyz culture, the transformation of felt-based items, and their impact on contemporary Kyrgyz culture, economy, and tourism. To effectively investigate these aspects, printed sources related to the study were reviewed. Then, the data obtained through field research were analyzed in order to show the current appearance of felt. The findings underscore that the tradition of felting serves diverse practical functions in Kyrgyz society, thus explaining the continued usage of felt to this day. Furthermore, it was observed that the evolution and transformation of the felting tradition have made substantial contributions to the nation's cultural economy and tourism sector. Podcasting has emerged as an important tool for interpretive communication of heritage and promotion and marketing of tourism organizations. The integration of podcasting in these organizations' digital models and strategies became even more evident with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, setting an alternative and enriching medium for citizens to experience heritage. Thus, the aim of the paper is to explore the use of cultural heritage, tourism-related podcasts in the context of the Iberian Peninsula, a territory with deep geographical and intercultural relationships, with capacity for developing integrated tourism strategies and products, but also with dissimilarities in the tourism and media area. Through qualitative methodology, the cultural heritage, tourism-related podcasts available in Portugal and Spain in 2022 were mapped, an observation grid was built, and a content analysis was carried out, identifying the themes, the origin, the structure, sound expressiveness and narrative techniques used in podcasts. Thus, this paper contributes to a greater understanding of how podcasts are used in the tourism sector, highlighting the good practices existing in both countries, the advantages and potential of podcasts and pointing out new paths that could constitute innovative uses in communication in tourism. Mahikeng, the seat of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District and capital of South Africa’s North West province, has identified tourism as an economic driver based on cultural heritage related to Batswana, Boer, and British contestation. However, the colonial heritage is underutilised as visitors come to Mahikeng (formerly Mafeking) in search of experiences relating to the siege of Mafeking, the Anglo–Boer War, and the origins of the Boy Scouts movement but leave disappointed. This heritage has been downgraded in democratic post-apartheid South Africa as there is an agenda that seeks to highlight African cultural heritage, particularly relating to the anti-apartheid struggle. This formerly suppressed cultural heritage needs to be promoted as it is crucial to South Africa’s history, identity, and social cohesion. However, other heritages that are also important are falling by the wayside with the result that the country’s diversity as the ‘rainbow nation’ is being eroded, and heritage tourism opportunities, which could prompt Local Economic Development (LED), are missed. A more critical engagement with the colonial heritage by including African perspectives, critiques, interactions, and roles within the narrative is needed.

Çanakkale iline bağlı Ayvacık ilçesi 15.yy.’dan bu yana, Yörükler tarafından dokunan el yapımı halı üretimleri ile tanınan bir halı merkezidir. Ayvacık ilçesi dokuma halıların yanı sıra kültürel miras açısından da zengin bir bölgedir. 1980’lerde dünya el yapımı halı pazarında önemli bir yeri olan Ayvacık halılarının üretiminde son 20 yıllık süreçte ciddi bir düşüş yaşanmıştır. Bu çalışma, Ayvacık yöresinde halıcılığın günümüzdeki durumunu, halı üretiminde görülen gerilemenin sebeplerini ve halı üreticilerinin karşılaştığı güncel sorunları tespit ederek, yöreye ait büyük bir değer, bir kültür mirası ögesi, turistik bir ürün olan el halılarını sektörel bazda sürdürebilir kılmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışmada veriler, alan araştırması yöntemi kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen verilere göre; 2003 yılında Ayvacık’ın 34 köyünde halı dokumacılığı yapılırken, günümüzde bu sayının beşe düştüğü görülmektedir. Toplam 29 köy’de halı dokumacılığı terkedilmiştir. Halı üretiminin gerilemesindeki sebepler incelendiğinde; üretici ve üretim odaklı sorunlar, malzeme ve maliyet odaklı sorunlar, endüstriyel gelişim ve tüketici odaklı sorunlar ile pazarlama odaklı sorunlardan kaynaklandığı tespit edilmiştir.

This article considers the social and symbolic work of Hisor as a site of Tajikistan’s cultural heritage. Hisor carries with it an array of meanings and represents a convergence of multiple spheres of social life: leisure, education, life-cycle rites and religiosity. Hisor’s flexibility allows it to materialize Tajikistan’s governing ideology as one local project of modernity. This article discusses three contexts in which visitors experience Hisor as heritage: tourist visits to the ‘Old Madrassa’ museum, wedding photographs in front of the fortress walls and pilgrimages to the shrine of Makhdumi Azam. The heritage practices and discourses associated with Hisor offer a complex case study of how the temporal ambivalence of heritage operates on the ground in Central Asia and suggest some of heritage’s utility as a social practice for instantiating cultural memory. The tourism industry necessitates comprehensive planning programs and forward-looking studies to ensure the successful and effective management of tourism resources. Although Algeria is endowed with an array of natural, historical, and civilizational tourism assets, its tourism strategies continue to be hindered by deficiencies in service quality, which have yet to meet the expectations of foreign tourists in particular. From this perspective, the research paper seeks to develop a visionary and future-oriented approach to harness and capitalize on Algeria’s diverse and unique cultural heritage for the advancement of a heritage tourism industry. This paper aims to address the components, role and importance of cultural heritage in the cultural tourism development, analyzing Kosovo and its cultural heritage as a specific case. The favorable geostrategic position and natural resources have made Kosovo, although a small country, stand out with its rich cultural heritage. Currently, Kosovo has (23) cultural heritage assets under permanent protection and about 1590 more under temporary protection. A study has been carried out regarding the impact of Kosovo's potential for the cultural tourism development and knowledge of cultural heritage on the frequency of tourist visits for cultural purposes. The findings of this study have shown that Kosovo's potential for the cultural tourism development has an impact on tourist visits for cultural purposes and the higher the level of knowledge about Kosovo's cultural heritage, the more frequent the tourist visits for cultural purposes. It turned out that Kosovo has sufficient potential for the cultural tourism development and the level of knowledge of the respondents about the cultural heritage of Kosovo is sufficient. Also, it was found that in 70.0% of cases, the frequency of visits to monuments of the cultural and historical heritage of Kosovo is 1-5 times a year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

St. Nicholas Church is a remarkable Byzantine structure located in the Demre district of Antalya, in the southern region of Türkiye. The church and its accompanying tomb were built in the 5th century AD in memory of St. Nicholas after his death. It became a sacred cultural center and a pilgrimage site throughout the Middle Ages. Throughout history, the church underwent multiple reconstructions and substantial repairs necessitated by invasions, earthquakes, and other factors. During the Late Middle Ages, a flood of the river Myros submerged the church under approximately 6meters of alluvial deposits. The excavations, which began in 1862 and have continued intermittently to this day, have uncovered significant remains, which were subsequently restored in accordance with the conservation approach of their respective periods. However, certain ruins persist within privately owned areas. Although the church largely maintains its structural integrity, ongoing excavations within the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s designated areas in the monastery complex continually contribute new insights. This article aims to provide data on the restoration efforts undertaken on the church and its ruins, which now function as a Memorial Museum, preserving their original values during the restoration period of 2021- 2023. The primary goal is to contribute valuable insights for future restoration initiatives. Furthermore, the article seeks to advocate for the inclusion of the monument in the World Heritage List, the establishment of Site Management, and the enhancement of its global recognition. By making the newly unearthed spaces accessible to visitors, particularly for Russian pilgrims for whom the church holds significant religious importance, it is envisioned that this will not only foster faith and cultural tourism but also enrich the perception and interpretation of this historic structure. The urban–rural fringe is at the forefront of the confrontation between the agricultural and industrial civilisations. How to handle the relationship between the two civilisations in this region and ensure its sustainable development is an eternal topic in the science of the human-living environment. Thanks to the special historical background of the Third Line construction, China's industrial heritage connects with the urban–rural fringe that surpasses other countries. For the first time, this study connects China's Third Line construction, industrial heritage, and urban–rural integration within the same context, combining big data bibliometric methods to obtain the development characteristics and context of China's industrial heritage research starting from 2004. It has strong policy characteristics, is influenced by administrative orders, and is aligned with urbanisation efforts. Theoretical exploration is the first step in research, followed by value connotations and cultural qualities. It addresses various topics, including industrial heritage conservation, regeneration approaches, and cultural heritage tourism. The research focuses primarily on the value appraisal of industrial heritage, exploring revitalisation tactics and routes, as well as regional development models in urban–rural periphery areas. This study also examines how scholars generally consider the impact of industrial heritage on the economic, social, and cultural development of urban–rural fringe areas in order to integrate and propose various protection and utilisation strategies, such as industrial heritage preservation, cultural and creative industry development, and tourism resource development. Purpose: To understand the experiences, expectations and suggestions of digital nomads towards intangible cultural heritage in the places they travel. Design/methodology/approach: The qualitative research method was used and the research design is a phenomenological design. Multiple qualitative research design steps were followed in obtaining the research data. In this context, online interviews were conducted with a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers, and the social media accounts of digital nomads were monitored. The sample consists of nine digital nomads who were interviewed online and five digital nomads whose videos and comments shared on social media were monitored. The inductive thematic analysis method was used to analyse the data. Findings: It was found that digital nomads experience intangible cultural heritage elements, especially religious rituals and food culture, and actively participate in activities and rituals related to these elements as well as sharing them on their social media accounts. It was also concluded that the participants expected to work towards the protection of intangible cultural heritage elements through a number of activities such as awareness-raising and education, and that it is difficult to experience cultural heritage in societies that are not foreign-friendly. Research limitations/implications: The data were obtained from volunteer participants consisting of digital nomads and digital nomads who shared their experiences on social media. It is suggested that traditional food and religious rituals as intangible cultural heritage should be promoted and transferred by sharing the experiences these digital nomads on digital platforms. Practical implications: Religious rituals and food cultures are prominent in the ICH experiences of digital nomads. Digital nomads who stay longer in their destination than tourists can play an intermediary role in promoting and transmitting this heritage. The social media and other digital platforms enable digital nomads to share their experiences of cultural heritage and create a global dialogue and understanding through these experiences. Social implications: The experiences and expectations of digital nomads towards ICH require a reassessment of traditional approaches to the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage. By experiencing different cultural heritages and sharing these experiences through digital platforms, digital nomads contribute to the reinterpretation and reproduction of cultural heritage. This process reveals that cultural heritage is not limited to a particular community or geography, but is rather a global phenomenon, and therefore needs to be addressed from a global perspective. Heritage objects play an important role not only for the development of tourism but also for the knowledge of humanity. This contribution is focused on the perception of the importance of applying modern digital tools to heritage objects. The aim of the paper is to find out and analytically evaluate whether the implementation of modern digital tools motivates to a more significant visit of heritage objects. Based on a sample of respondents from the Slovak Republic, it finds out whether the implementation affects their interest in visiting the mentioned heritage objects as part of the development potential of tourism. The research objective was implemented through questionnaire research methods. The obtained data were verified by selected statistical methods. The research results point to certain differences in the perception of their importance as a tool to support their visitors’ rate. The main difference was found in the case the gender of respondents. There was found out, that women pay more attention on the level of digital tools implementation when deciding about visiting them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The study aims to understand how cultural route heritage is conceptualized and managed in China by systematically reviewing the research literature on Chinese cultural route heritage (CRH). The study intends to inspire further discussion on the theoretical and practical development of cultural routes since the development is still at a liminal stage in China. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 253 research articles related to Chinese cultural rote heritage from major Chinese and English research databases China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus have been comprehensively identified and reviewed for the purpose of the study. Findings: Four major themes of research on Chinese CRH have been identified: conceptual evaluation, list of the routes and characteristics of the routes, conservation and utilization. The results revealed that China has very rich resources in CRH, many of which were formed a long time ago, which exist across vast geographic regions and have assumed multiple functions and undergone dynamic reciprocal exchanges among diverse cultures and ethnicities. Practical implications: The paper summarizes some major obstacles faced by CRH in China and proposes a strategic model to address the need for a more sustainable development of CRH in the Chinese context. Originality/value: The paper offers a comprehensive overview of CRH in China and discusses practical issues in management and development of heritage great in size, number and complexity. Aceh Singkil is an economically successful area with many enticing tourist attractions, such as natural, ethnic, and maritime. This region, which is bordered by the sea and split by a major river known as the Lae Souraya, is home to several historical and cultural attractions. The existence of natural resources and cultural attractions persuades the local government to formulate the culture as an interesting package for the visitor. This article examines the role and resources of Aceh Singkil's natural and cultural heritage that are currently, but not properly, used. According to this typology, Aceh Singkil has phenomenal tourism and cultural attraction spots, which include natural tourist attractions, art and cultural performances, artificial natural (engineering) and important cultural places, royal historical heritage sites, important spiritual sites, spiritual values, local genius, and traditional culinary delights. Following a field investigation, researchers found issues such as how to operate and exploit these cultural sites for sustainable tourist growth. What typology may be used to depict tourism and cultural attractions in Aceh Singkil? This study seeks to identify and deconstruct examples of operating and exploiting these resources for the development of sustainable cultural tourism, as well as to build a typology capable of representing Aceh Singkil's tourist attractions. Theoretical and practical issues that indicate the uniqueness of regional ethno-cultural tourism are examined. Based on this data, experts believe that an ethno-historically based ethnocultural tourism model is required. Moreover, these findings and field investigations are critical to create an ethnocultural tourism model that pays special attention to the cultural traits of the Aceh Singkil people and national nature for both locals and visitors from other countries. The objective of establishing this model is to assist in the development and introduction of sustainable cultural attraction for visitors, the creation of new employment for people, the rise in sales of tourism and cultural products, and, of course, the improvement of tourism and art cultural infrastructure in the region. In the last two decades, cultural tourism has transformed the aesthetics and the relationship between the actors of the Arauco territories. In the post-COVID context, these transformations could be reinforced, especially considering the actual legal scenario about indigenous rights and the global ecological crisis. In most cases, the indigenous people, with cultural tourism initiatives, highlight their world vision, including the relations with nature. For this reason, we propose to study this scientific problem from the relational ontology perspective. In this study, we describe the situation of cultural tourism in Arauco Province, Chile, where Mapuche people, the Chilean State, and the international market coexist in permanent friction. The main objective is to analyze how the pandemic influenced Mapuche cultural tourism, from the Mapuche cultural perspective and the global conditions for their development. The methods of research mixed historical and ethnographic approaches with a sample of key actors of Mapuche cultural tourism. As results, we can show the Mapuche way of understanding cultural tourism and the new conditions derived from the pandemic and post-pandemic contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a game changer in many fields, including cultural heritage. It supports the planning and preservation of heritage sites and cities, enables the creation of virtual experiences to enrich cultural tourism and engagement, supports research, and increases access and understanding of heritage objects. Despite some impressive examples, the full potential of AI for economic, social, and cultural change is not yet fully visible. Against this background, this article aims to (a) highlight the scope of AI in the field of cultural heritage and innovation, (b) highlight the state of the art of AI technologies for cultural heritage, (c) highlight challenges and opportunities, and (d) outline an agenda for AI, cultural heritage, and innovation. The "Tourism through Folklore: Challenges and Opportunities" salons were organized by the Fellows of the American Folklore Society. Participants were clear-eyed about the damage to the integrity of cultural practices and community life that is often engendered by tourism, but they also considered concrete solutions involving greater community agency and the sustainable tourism initiatives of folklorists. They noted the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on spurring regenerative tourism. These salons considered the opportunities and pitfalls of immersive tourism experiences, how host/guest relationships can be reconfigured, and approaches for controlling access to over-touristed areas. Folklorists were viewed as being well-equipped to educate about culturally appropriate behavior and to generate substantive interpretative materials, both of which may require collaboration with the tourism industry. Fragmented guidance and unbalanced climate adaptation efforts for tangible and intangible cultural heritage are challenging the long-term sustainability of coastal tourism destinations. Conceptualizing and quantifying adaptation paradigms that optimize cultural heritage preservation from multi-faceted perspectives under fiscal constraints is highly prioritized by coastal tourism destinations. Informed by the Modern Portfolio Theory, this study developed, tested, and evaluated four adaptation paradigms using machine-learning approaches to optimize the historical significance, tangible, and intangible values of multi-type cultural heritage in Gulf Island National Seashore across a 30-year planning horizon under varying fiscal constraints. Results indicated that adaptation paradigms can provide transformative and flexible preservation portfolios to preserve tangible and intangible uses when facing degradation or loss from inadequate funding and intensifying climate threats. The mixed-paradigm framework optimizes preservation efforts between tangible and intangible cultural heritage quantitatively and can be generalized to coastal tourism destinations globally as a sustainable climate adaptation decision support tool. Heritage tourism should be integrated into tourism planning to preserve the culture of communities and contribute to local development. This research aimed to develop an e-marketing plan for promoting the real estate assets of Portoviejo, located in the Manabí province of Ecuador. The research methodology employed was a mix of non-experimental and exploratory approaches. By applying analytical techniques and collecting data, we identified and characterised 23 real estate assets in Portoviejo with great potential for cultural tourism. We used local methodologies from Instituto Nacional de Patrimonio Cultural del Ecuador (INPC) and Ministerio de Turismo del Ecuador. Also, we conducted interviews with local actors involved in the management and maintenance of cultural heritage. Finally, we developed strategies to utilise digital platforms to promote cultural tourism in the area and contribute to local tourism development through these real estate assets. Objective: The civic participatory system is a means of involving citizens in decisionmaking processes and monitoring public policies, aimed at increasing the transparency, accountability and efficiency of public administration. The civic participatory system implies the existence of formal and informal mechanisms for consultation, dialogue, collaboration and cocreation between public authorities and civil society in order to identify, formulate, implement and evaluate solutions to problems of public interest. In the field of culture and tourism, the civic participatory system plays an important role in promoting the enhancement of cultural heritage, cultural diversity, access to culture and sustainable tourism development. This article aims to analyse the civic participatory system in order to outline a current situation at national and regional level for the development and valorisation of cultural heritage through tourism in the Danube region, which is characterised by great ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity. Method: This paper will use the systematic literature review method to investigate multicultural communities in the Danube area and how to improve institutional capacities, social inclusion and sustainable urban development. Results: Considering the decreasing capacities of public administrators to integrate the participatory approach into decision-making processes, this article will report on the conceptual delimitations of the civic participatory system related to the tourism and culture sector in multicultural communities in the Danube region and identify the relevant actors corresponding to this process. Originality: The article makes a significant contribution to the knowledge of the current situation of the civic participatory system in the Danube region and to the formulation of concrete proposals for its improvement. The theme is relevant and current, given the importance of cultural heritage and tourism for the sustainable development of the Danube region, as well as the need to involve citizens in decision-making processes and to promote intercultural dialogue. Cultural heritage tourism is a multidimensional tourist activity because, apart from the advantages associated with practicing tourist activity, it is particularly associated with cognitive motives when it comes to practicing it, and even with discovering cultural identity. Such an activity has a specific value in relation to the adopted perspective. Researchers often attempt to determine the value that a tourism-related product has for the customer (tourist). Sometimes, it is defined as the value captured by the entity providing the tourism product. However, it is extremely rare for research to assess the social value of tourism. The aim of this work is to identify issues that can be used in measuring the social value resulting from cultural heritage made available in the form of a tourist product. The authors review the literature on cultural heritage and cultural identity, and then use a particular methodology to develop a tool for assessing social value. To develop their own research tool, the authors use the results of research conducted in 2021/2022 among managers of 70 cultural heritage tourism facilities in Europe. As a result, a tool was created that includes six statements that can contribute to the assessment of the social value resulting from the provision of material cultural heritage in the form of a tourist product. The reliability of the tool was estimated at 0.69 and its standardized rating at 0.71. The social value of cultural heritage, in the opinion of experts, achieved an average rating of 4.06 (on a scale from 1 to 5), with the 6-item version of the tool attaining an average rating of 4.10. Taking into account the usefulness of the proposed solutions, remember that the paper reflects only the European vision, which is one of many possible views.

This review constitutes a comprehensive systematic review analyzing cultural routes, with a particular focus on the concept of the cultural route as a tourist–cultural product. Within this framework, the paper offers an overview of contemporary technological challenges, concerns, and limitations. It thoroughly explores cutting-edge technologies pertaining to the promotion of cultural heritage, both in general and in the specific context of realizing the concept of the cultural route, a tourist–cultural service enriched by the utilization of new media. Additionally, it extensively references the latest techniques and models for enhancing the user experience of digital cultural tourism products. Moreover, the paper showcases existing digital platforms and tools that encapsulate and emphasize the notion of cultural tourism. It assesses the respective methodologies, technologies, and techniques employed in each case, accompanied by illustrative instances of their applications. Tourism development allows the enhancement of the heritage of local cultural resources, expressing the territorial potential. The Systematic Literature Review shown in this paper highlight the relationship between "cultural heritage" and "tourism". The current state of the art and the specific relationships between the contents of the selected publications demonstrate that tourism is an indispensable tool in local communication and cultural promotion policies and strategies. The House of Wonders (or Beit al-Ajaib), one of the iconic buildings of Zanzibar's waterfront, partially collapsed on 25th December 2020. This catastrophic incident, which included the famous clocktower, killed two people who had been inside the building and injured several others. The House of Wonders has prompted fascination and admiration since its construction as part of a redevelopment of Zanzibar's waterfront by Sultan Barghash in 1883. Its collapse attracted worldwide media attention. This article explores the dynamics of history and heritage in Zanzibar, using the collapse of the House of Wonders as the catalyst for analysing the ways that Zanzibaris feel about the presentation of the past. The research involved a series of interviews with residents of Stone Town in which participants discussed the collapse of the House of Wonders and themes of history, identity and tourism. Our project reveals the layered associations with the House of Wonders, one which acknowledges the building's Omani origins and colonial use but simultaneously its centrality as an icon of Zanzibar. The article also discusses what these findings about the House of Wonders reveal about the complex relationship between perceptions of Zanzibari cultural heritage and the role of tourism. Nowadays, cultural heritage is defined as a way for contemporary man to interact with history and past; consequently, heritage interpretation is beyond the mere transfer of information from specialists to nonspecialists. As contemporary interpretation has been conceptualized to guide people towards a constructive interaction with the cultural heritage. Based on this, the current research examines the evolution of heritage interpretation and the transition from positivist interpretation to constructivist interpretation. After developing the theoretical framework, using in-depth semi-structured interviews with experienced cultural tourism guides (interpreters), examine the effectiveness of their interpretation strategies from the two mentioned approaches. The research method is qualitative, and the sampling method is snowball. Data collection was done in 2021 and continued until theoretical saturation was reached (14th interview), and the results were analyzed using Maxqda10 software based on the thematic analysis method. The results showed that the themes of interpreting the site as a part of the whole, connecting the past and present, adapting the content of the interpretation to the previous knowledge, making the past of the site tangible for tourists, storytelling and narration using elements of intangible culture, participation of tourists in the process of interpretation and encouragement of discourse and self-interpretation, stimulating the mental creativity of tourists and education and flexibility in the program and allowing the visitor to discover is the correspondence of the strategies of the structuralist approach with the perspective of tourism commentators and their influence from this approach. Do historical celebrities contribute to city tourism today? While the existing literature has widely examined the tourism effect of modern film celebrities, it has not yet explored the long-run impact of historical and cultural celebrities on tourism economies. We answer this question by tracing the places of residence of Su Shi, one of the greatest Chinese cultural celebrities in the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127), and estimating the effect on average city tourism between 2002 and 2019. Our ordinary least square estimation finds that one more month of Su Shi's residence increases domestic tourism revenue today by about 0.3%, leading to an average tourism value of around 118 million Chinese Yuan (about 18 million US dollars). We consolidate the long-run effect with several robustness checks. Channel analysis further shows that his residence facilitates tourism development today and increased cultural heritage in subsequent dynasties. Purpose: This study aims to examine and analyse data relating to cultural heritage, smart tourism and smart tourism tools for preserving cultural heritage in the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on a qualitative review of data from National tourism board web sites, the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, and the European Heritage Label sites. The paper analyses various sources in terms of cultural heritage and smart tourism and examines different ways of applying smart tourism tools to cultural heritage. Findings: The findings show that smart tourism, and especially the preservation of cultural heritage in the Baltic states, is not a new thing, and it is rapidly progressing by inventing new technological tools for tourists to use and as well by digitising cultural heritage. Comprehensive examination of three countries shows that there is significant potential already and that there is a way to grow further for each of the countries by applying new technological tools for preservation of a cultural heritage. Originality/value: The paper reviews data on cultural heritage and smart tourism tools in the Baltic states where it already plays a steady and significant role. Specifically, it contributes to recognition of each of the states on a global level in terms of variety of cultural heritage that is being preserved and digitalised. Responsible tourism practices promote the idea that responsibility refers to both visitors and local communities, ensuring the protection and conservation of the natural environment and cultural heritage and contributing to a better quality of life. The role of "sustainability" in a tourist development strategy is to protect and reveal what already exists ("reuse, recycle, renovate") rather than consume. In these terms, cultural routes can serve as valuable tourism assets that can attract visitors and generate economic activity, while protecting the environmental and cultural heritage. This study is focused on Symi, a small and remote Greek island better known as a religious tourism destination, examining how cultural routes could be at the core of an economic development and social cohesion strategic plan. Symi served as a case study due to the island's rich cultural and natural heritage, including historic buildings, natural attractions, monuments, and archaeological sites. The revealing of those assets is crucial for the advancement of an integrated local strategy for cultural tourism in terms of responsible tourism. The primary objective of this study is to analyze how the development of a cultural routes network, integrating monuments from diverse historical periods, significant religious sites, and areas of significant architectural and environmental value, can contribute to a responsible tourism approach and further a sustainable development that generates multiple benefits for the local community in an insular region. This paper examines the conceptualization and expression of cultural diversity and unity within the European Capitals of Culture (ECOC) initiative using a case study approach. Previous case studies have examined the impacts of the programmes from a single-city perspective and used quantitative and economic-focused approaches to evaluate impact. However, the ECOC initiative was intended to showcase the diverse cultures in Europe rather than focus on economic outcomes. A cultural discourse analysis was applied to eight winning cities between 2015 and 2019 (proceeding the onset of COVID-19) to answer the question: are ECOC focusing on expressing their national or regional diversity and identities or are they communicating a more generalized European perspective? The results showed that in the past five-year ECOCs have chosen to engage in more diverse and localized forms of cultural expression in their events, but not in their visual communications. Based on the analysis, a series of recommendations for future programme development are made (also published as a separate policy brief) to enhance ECOC's ability to balance the communication of their diversity with their connection to Europe. It is not unusual for a place to wait for years before being inscribed on the World Heritage List, but Sarnath—the place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon—has been on UNESCO's "tentative list" for close to 25 years. As a sacred place for Buddhist pilgrimages, Sarnath continues to attract thousands of visitors annually and yet, remains under-developed, unlike other pilgrim towns or religious tourism destinations. This paper examines the reasons for the stunted growth of Sarnath. The findings are based on fieldwork conducted in Sarnath in 2019. The analysis of stakeholder interviews suggests several reasons for Sarnath not being able to capitalize on its religious and cultural heritage for tourism-led development. It was found that the protection of the site as an archaeological park by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which has been controlling development surrounding the park as well as prohibiting the performance of any rituals, have been the key endogenous factors that have contributed to the relative under-development of a Buddhist pilgrimage economy in the town. A handful of monasteries are where Buddhist followers stay and perform their pilgrimage rituals, rendering them as enclaves. Private-sector accommodation is also limited to around 15 hotels and guesthouses. Administratively, Sarnath does not have an independent governance structure. It is governed as just one ward (an electoral constituency) by the Municipal Corporation of Varanasi and is, thus, always under the shadow of Varanasi city. Varanasi is one of the most significant Hindu sacred cities and, hence, visitors stay there for much longer durations to soak in cultural offerings, including religious ceremonies around the Ganga River; a visit to Sarnath is secondary and often limited to a half-day tour. Moreover, the archaeological park at Sarnath serves a recreational purpose as a picnic site for domestic visitors. The exogenous factors mean that the interests of Sarnath (as a Buddhist site) are hardly acknowledged by the Hindu city of Varanasi. This paper argues that the multi-layered contestations that exist at the site level, the town–ward level, and between visitors and managers have further contributed to the poor state of heritage and tourism in Sarnath. The purpose of this work is to present the systematization of an academic-research experience that from heritage education has been carried out in Girardot as part of a process of patrimonialization of the petroglyphs of Alto Magdalena region from Colombia. Two academic programs at University of Cundinamarca, Bachelor degree in Education in Humanities: Spanish and English and Technology in Tourism and Hotel Management, have carried out research and itinerant pedagogical practices in the areas of the petroglyphs as part of a process of heritage education and research formative. Through an ethnographic look and an approach from the social imaginaries it was intended to verify how much the perceptions changed after the field trips. Finally, there are processes of patrimonialization and tourism derived from this heritage education in order for petroglyphs to be recognized as heritage before government bodies and thus develop an economic activation from cultural tourism. The article presents rural tourism as an opportunity for economic growth in the Junín district, Argentina. It highlights the importance of valuing the natural and cultural heritage of the area and proposes the generation of proposals guided by the Sustainable Development Goals and the training of the local community as tourist hosts. Rural tourism is presented as an alternative to mass tourism and as a way to stimulate the local economy and promote the dispersion of demand over time and territory. Additionally, it is mentioned that cultural tourism can be a driver of development in the 21st century, revaluing heritage features and providing growth opportunities for host communities. In Argentina, rural tourism has developed as an income alternative for owners of agricultural estates. The article also emphasizes the importance of promoting education and professional training in tourism, especially for young people, women, indigenous peoples, and vulnerable individuals. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of promoting sustainable cities and communities, preserving natural heritage, and fostering cultural exchange. The case of Junín, in the province of Buenos Aires, is mentioned as an example of sustainable tourism development. The article concludes with recommendations to improve tourism in the area, including community training and destination valuation. The need to showcase the place with its customs and daily activities, avoiding imitating other tourist destinations, is emphasized. The participation of tourists in local activities and interaction with the community is promoted. This study explores the potential for camping tourism in Pune, Maharashtra, India, by analyzing current camping opportunities, natural attractions, and cultural heritage abundance. The objectives were to assess the potential for camping tourism, identify existing camping options, evaluate natural and cultural attractions, and provide recommendations for industry development. Data from a survey supported the hypothesis that Pune’s natural beauty and cultural heritage make it a promising camping destination. The survey revealed a high interest in camping tourism and identified various camping options available in Pune, indicating suitable infrastructure. Participants appreciated the diverse natural attractions, such as lakes, mountains, beaches, and forests, and acknowledged the enriching cultural heritage with temples, forts, festivals, and museums. Challenges like lack of infrastructure and adverse weather were noted, but opportunities such as proximity to cities and increasing demand for outdoor activities were recognized. The study concludes with recommendations for stakeholders and policymakers to improve infrastructure, safety measures, sustainability, and marketing strategies to promote Pune as a premier camping destination. Overall, the study provides valuable insights and suggestions for fostering camping tourism in Pune, Maharashtra, India, contributing to local economic growth and positioning the region as an attractive camping destination.
