The article seeks to review, from a gender perspective, the findings of an exploratory qualitative analysis on the capacity of institutional participation mechanisms to recreate (or not) more democratic political cultures. To do this, it reconstructs a) the sense and meanings given to participation, (b) the educational impact they have on the participants, and (c) the subject's perception on the transformative capacity of participation. The field work was carried out based on direct observation of different experiences and semi-structured interviews with citizens of seven municipalities in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires (Argentina). In the first section, the treatment and contributions of political science, anthropology and sociology to the concept of political culture are revisited, proposing a definition it, secondly, the theoretical framework is broadened by incorporating the contributions of gender studies to the research; thirdly, the empirical data is analyzed under this reformulation; and finally, the conclusions highlight the aspects of the analysis that deserve further investigation.
