Mosquitoes pose a significant threat to global health, impacting over 40% of the world's population. Currently, a dearth of large-scale and long-term data on mosquito populations in China hinders related research and public health endeavors. In response, we meticulously compiled and analyzed existing studies to construct a comprehensive dataset illustrating the spatial variation of mosquito populations, density, and composition across mainland China. This dataset furnishes invaluable information to support further research on mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases on broader spatial and temporal scales. Mosquito-borne viral infections are on the rise worldwide and can lead to severe symptoms such as haemorrhage, encephalitis, arthritis or microcephaly. A protective immune response following mosquito-borne viral infections requires the generation of a controlled and balanced immune response leading to viral clearance without immunopathology. Here, regulatory T cells play a central role in restoring immune homeostasis. In current review, we aim to provide an overview and summary of the phenotypes of FOXP3 + Tregs in various mosquito-borne arboviral disease, their association with disease severity and their functional characteristics. Furthermore, we discuss the role of cytokines and Tregs in the immunopathogenesis of mosquito-borne infections. Lastly, we discuss possible novel lines of research which could provide additional insight into the role of Tregs in mosquito-borne viral infections in order to develop novel therapeutic approaches or vaccination strategies.

Mosquito surveillance is critical for actively tracking the location and monitoring population levels and the threat of mosquito-borne disease. Although light-emitting diodes (LEDs) light traps have grown in popularity, there is still a limited understanding of the application of light wavelengths for trapping nocturnally active wild mosquitoes in forest ecotypes. This study evaluated the performance of different UV wavelengths in trapping mosquito populations in a forested mountainous area in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand. Traps with different UV wavelengths were deployed in 6 locations, following a 6 × 6 Latin square replicated 6 times over a total of 36 nights. Light traps were operated between 18:00 and 06:00 h from October 2022 to August 2023. Mosquitoes were separately collected from individual traps every 4 h at 22.00, 2.00, and 6.00 h. Mosquitoes were killed by placing in a freezer (- 20 °C) for at least 30 min and then were morphologically identified using illustrated keys for adult females. Traps fitted with the LED 365 wavelength light source were the most effective in capturing 790 (23.66%) of the total mosquitoes collected, followed by the UV fluorescent 632 (18.93%), with the other 4 LED wavelengths collecting between 16.89% (LED 385) and 12.64% (LED 375) of the mosquitoes. Culex was the most common genus, representing 56.00% of total mosquito abundance. LED 365 and LED 385 were comparable to the UV fluorescent traps (the standard reference). Optimal trapping times were during 18:00-22:00 h. Mosquito-borne infectious diseases represent a significant public health issue. Age has been identified as a key risk factor for these diseases, and another phenomenon reported is relapse, which involves the reappearance of symptoms after a symptom-free period. Recent research indicates that susceptibility to and relapse of mosquito-borne diseases are frequently age-dependent. This paper proposes a new model to better capture the dynamics of mosquito-borne diseases by integrating two age-dependent factors: chronological age and asymptomatic-infection age. Chronological age refers to the time elapsed from the date of birth of the host to the present time. On the other hand, asymptomatic infection age denotes the time elapsed since the host became asymptomatic after the primary infection. The system of integro-differential equations uses flexible, unspecified functions to represent these dependencies, assuming they are integrable. We analyzed the global stability of both the disease-free and endemic equilibrium states using the direct Lyapunov method with Volterra-type Lyapunov functionals. Additionally, the paper explores several special cases involving well-known host-vector models.

The genus Haemagogus (Diptera: Culicidae) includes species that are important vectors of pathogens such as the yellow fever virus. The accurate identification of these species is essential for the control of zoonoses. Females of Hg. capricornii and Hg. janthinomys are morphologically indistinguishable, which makes the use of alternative identification techniques desirable. This study aimed to obtain sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene, in the region widely used for DNA barcoding, of Haemagogus specimens from the state of São Paulo, Brazil, to evaluate the effectiveness of these sequences in the molecular identification of the species. A total of 37 female and 2 male mosquitoes were collected in various locations in the state of São Paulo, using methods such as hand-nets, Shannon traps, CDC light traps with CO 2 bait and Nasci aspirators. The sequences of a 710 bp fragment of the COI gene were amplified by PCR and sequenced. A phylogenetic tree reconstruction was conducted using the Bayesian approach implemented in MrBayes v3.2.2, providing support values for taxa where genetic clusters may indicate the presence of new or cryptic species. We obtained 39 COI sequences representing three species: Haemagogus capricornii, Haemagogus leucocelaenus, and Haemagogus janthinomys. Bayesian analysis of the sequences produced clades that corroborate the morphological identification of the species. The separation of Hg. capricornii and Hg. janthinomys received 100 % statistical support and the Hg. capricornii was very well supported (91 %). The two sequences from male specimens, morphologically identified as Hg. capricornii, were grouped in the same clade, a sister clade of Hg. janthinomys. It is important to highlight that the Hg. janthinomys were positioned in several subclades, showing a polymorphism of this species within the state, a situation not observed for Hg. capricornii. For the first time, sequences of the mtCOI gene from Hg. capricornii were obtained and related to morphologically identified specimens. COI sequences proved effective in the molecular identification of Haemagogus species. As stewards of public and environmental health, mosquito control agencies are rightfully concerned about impacts on nontarget organisms. This study examined the impact of a modern, pyrethroid based ground adulticide program using ultra-low volume applications in a metropolitan county in central Florida. Nontarget insects and mosquitoes were collected in a before-after control-impact design at 21 sites over 1.5 years. While mosquitoes were reduced, we found no evidence for reduction of nontarget insects, regardless of taxon. Night-flying Lepidoptera may experience greater risk than other nontarget taxa, but overall effects of adulticide missions on this group were low and inconsistent. Instead, meteorology, habitat, and phenology dominate patterns of nontarget abundance. Background: Research on vector-borne diseases has traditionally centred on a limited number of vertebrate hosts and their associated pathogens, often neglecting the broader array of vectors within communities. Mosquitoes, with their vast species diversity, hold a central role in disease transmission, yet their capacity to transmit specific pathogens varies considerably among species. Quantitative modelling of mosquito-borne diseases is essential for understanding transmission dynamics and requires the necessity of incorporating the identity of vector species into these models. Consequently, understanding the role of different species of mosquitoes in modelling vector-borne diseases is crucial for comprehending pathogen amplification and spill-over into humans. This comprehensive overview highlights the importance of considering mosquito identity and emphasises the essential need for targeted research efforts to gain a complete understanding of vector-pathogen specificity., Methods: Leveraging the recently published book, 'Mosquitoes of the World', I identified 19 target mosquito species in Europe, highlighting the diverse transmission patterns exhibited by different vector species and the presence of 135 medically important pathogens., Results: The review delves into the complexities of vector-pathogen interactions, with a focus on specialist and generalist strategies. Furthermore, I discuss the importance of using appropriate diversity indices and the challenges associated with the identification of correct indices., Conclusions: Given that the diversity and relative abundance of key species within a community significantly impact disease risk, comprehending the implications of mosquito diversity in pathogen transmission at a fine scale is crucial for advancing the management and surveillance of mosquito-borne diseases.

The genus Orthopodomyia Theobald, 1904 (Diptera: Culicidae) comprises 36 wild mosquito species, with distribution largely restricted to tropical and temperate areas, most of which are not recognized as vectors of epidemiological importance due to the lack of information related to their bionomy and involvement in the cycle transmission of infectious agents. Furthermore, their evolutionary relationships are not completely understood, reflecting the scarcity of genetic information about the genus. Therefore, in this study, we report the first complete description of the mitochondrial genome of a Neotropical species representing the genus, Orthopodomyia fascipes Coquillet, 1906, collected in the Brazilian Amazon region. Using High Throughput Sequencing, we obtained a mitochondrial sequence of 15,598 bp, with an average coverage of 418.5×, comprising 37 functional subunits and a final portion rich in A + T, corresponding to the control region. The phylogenetic analysis, using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference based on the 13 protein-coding genes, corroborated the monophyly of Culicidae and its two subfamilies, supporting the proximity between the tribes Orthopodomyiini and Mansoniini, partially disagreeing with previous studies based on the use of molecular and morphological markers. The information generated in this study contributes to a better understanding of the taxonomy and evolutionary history of the genus and other groups of Culicidae.

Some mosquitoes, including species of the genus Toxorhynchites, are known for actively preying on other mosquito larvae, making these predators valuable allies in the fight against vector-borne diseases. A comprehensive understanding of the anatomy and physiology of these potential biological control agents is helpful for the development of effective strategies for controlling vector populations. This includes the antennae, a crucial component in the search for hosts, mating, and selection of oviposition sites. This study utilized scanning electron microscopy to characterize the sensilla on the antennae of adult mosquitoes from two species that are exclusively phytophagous, including Toxorhynchites theobaldi and Toxorhynchites violaceus, as well as Lutzia bigoti, which females are allegedly hematophagous. The types of sensilla in each species were compared, and five basic types of antennal sensilla were identified: trichoid, chaetic, coeloconic, basiconic, and ampullacea. The analysis also found that they were morphologically similar across the three species, regardless of feeding habits or sex. The identification and characterization of basic types of antennal sensilla in T. theobaldi, T. violaceus, and L. bigoti suggest that these structures, which play a crucial role in the behavior and ecology, have common functions across different mosquito species, despite differences in feeding habits or sex., (© 2024. Transgenic mosquitoes are used in many aspects of mosquito research, and convenient selection markers are crucial to identifying transgenic individuals even among large numbers of wild types. Visual markers, in the form of fluorescent proteins expressed in larval and adult mosquito tissues, are the most commonly used. This requires observing large numbers of mosquitoes under the fluorescence microscope and recognizing positive individuals expressing the fluorescent genetic marker. As research models, mosquito larvae possess the following two advantages over many other insects, greatly facilitating fluorescence screening: (1) Being aquatic, they can be isolated in a drop of clear water, an ideal medium for live observations under the binocular microscope; and (2) synchronous hatching from many eggs is easily obtained, so that large populations of larvae can be screened in batches of several tens of thousands at a time. Screening at the neonate stage, when larvae are ∼1-mm-long, allows the concentration of hundreds of larvae in a drop of water that fits in the observation field of the microscope at medium magnification. Thus, many individuals can be screened rapidly. We strongly recommend screening larvae at the neonate stage and before any feeding for two reasons, as follows: (1) Food particles can be strongly autofluorescent, thereby dramatically increasing the fluorescence background noise around larvae, and (2) tissue autofluorescence increases during development, notably in the digestive tract, significantly decreasing the specific signal-to-noise ratio. Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) annually kill nearly half a million people. Due to the lack of effective vaccines and drugs on most MBDs, disease prevention relies primarily on controlling mosquitoes. Despite huge efforts having been put into mosquito control, eco-friendly and sustainable mosquito-control strategies are still lacking and urgently demanded. Most mosquito-transmitted pathogens have lost the capacity of de novo nutrition biosynthesis, and rely on their vertebrate and invertebrate hosts for sustenance during the long-term obligate parasitism process. Therefore, a better understanding of the metabolic interactions between mosquitoes and pathogens will contribute to the discovery of novel metabolic targets or regulators that lead to reduced mosquito populations or vector competence. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the effects of mosquito metabolism on the transmission of multiple pathogens. Updating the mosquito fauna occurring in a specific area is crucial, given that certain species serve as vectors capable of transmitting zoonotic arboviruses. This scientific note presents the first records of mosquitoes of the tribe Orthopodomyiini in the Yucatan Peninsula. Immature mosquitoes were collected on 2 occasions inside a large tree hole in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Thirteen adult specimens, reared from the immatures, were obtained and identified as Orthopodomyia kummi based on external characteristics of females and males. This species has been recorded in Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, and marginally in the United States, but its presence in the Yucatan Peninsula had gone unnoticed until now. The knowledge about mosquitoes of the genus Orthopodomyia is limited, and their epidemiological importance remains uncertain. The most widely used attractant to capture adult female mosquitoes is CO 2 . However, there are also baits available on the market that emit a scent resembling human skin. These baits were specifically designed to attract highly anthropophilic species such as Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti. In this study, we compare the effectiveness of CDC traps baited either with CO 2 or with a commercial blend simulating skin odor, BG-Sweetscent, for trapping female mosquitoes during daylight hours in an urban reserve in the City of Buenos Aires. We employed a hurdle generalized linear mixed model to analyze trap capture probability and the number of mosquitoes captured per hour, considering the effects of attractant, mosquito species, and their interaction. Traps baited with CO 2 captured ten mosquito species, while those baited with BG-Sweetscent captured six in overall significantly lower abundance. The odds of capturing mosquitoes were 292% higher for the CO 2 -baited traps than for those baited with BG-Sweetscent. No evidence of a combined effect of attractant type and species on female mosquito captures per hour was found. Results indicated that CDC traps baited with CO 2 were more effective than those baited with BG-Sweetscent in capturing more mosquito species and a higher number of mosquitoes within each species, even if the species captured with CO 2 exhibited a certain level of anthropophilia. The New Jersey Light Trap has been among the earliest trap models used for mosquito surveillance in the United States. This trap was modernized in the 1950s to the miniature CDC light trap, with the addition of CO2 following soon after. The incandescent light has the tendency to attract nontarget insects, as well as losing a substantial portion of their energy as heat. Few studies have delineated whether heat or light in isolation make a difference in field collections using the former traps within the United States. Our study focused on isolating heat and light variables by using incandescent bulbs, light emitting diode (LED) bulbs, and electric heating patches affixed to a base model CO2 trap as designed at the Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District. Sites were selected in the urban and suburban foothills and canyons of the Wasatch Mountain front, industrial areas near the Salt Lake City International Airport, and rural wetlands in the marshes outlying the Great Salt Lake. Five traps were replicated within each sector during the summer and fall summer seasons. Collections were composed of Aedes dorsalis (Meigen), Culex pipiens L., Culex tarsalis Coquillett, and Culiseta inornata (Williston). Composition changes were a result of seasonal, rather than spatial, shifts. The results showed that LED light traps depressed collections of key species. Otherwise, there were negligible differences in collections among incandescent, heat film, and base model traps. Aims: West Nile Virus (WNV) has remained a persistent source of vector-borne disease risk in California since first being identified in the state in 2003. The geographic distribution of WNV activity is relatively widespread, but varies considerably across different regions within the state. Spatial variation in human WNV infection depends upon social-ecological factors that influence mosquito populations and virus transmission dynamics. Measuring changes in spatial patterns over time is necessary for uncovering the underlying regional drivers of disease risk., Methods and Results: In this study, we utilized statewide surveillance data to quantify temporal changes and spatial patterns of WNV activity in California. We obtained annual WNV mosquito surveillance data from 2004 through 2021 from the California Arbovirus Surveillance Program. Geographic coordinates for mosquito pools were analysed using a suite of spatial statistics to identify and classify patterns in WNV activity over time., Conclusions: We detected clear patterns of non-random WNV risk during the study period, including emerging hot spots in the Central Valley and non-random periods of oscillating WNV risk in Southern and Northern California subregions. Background and Objective: No autochthonous human cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) have been reported to date in the European Union (EU). In this study, we assess the likelihood of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) introduction and transmission within the EU and propose outbreak response measures., Risk Assessment: Given the global geographical distribution of JEV, the probability of virus introduction into the EU is currently very low, with viremic bird migration being the most plausible pathway of introduction. However, this likelihood would significantly increase if the virus were to become established in the Middle East, Caucasus, Central Asia or Africa. Considering the environmental conditions that are expected to be conducive for virus circulation, there is a high likelihood of virus transmission within the EU after its introduction in environmentally suitable areas. West Nile Virus (WNV) is an arthropod-borne virus that is spread through mosquito vectors. WNV emerged in the US in 1999 and has since become endemic in the US, causing the most domestically acquired arboviral disease in the country. Mosquito surveillance for WNV is useful to monitor arboviral disease burden over time and across different locations. RT-qPCR is the preferred method for WNV surveillance, but these methods are labor-intensive. The Panther Fusion System has an Open Access feature that allows for laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) to run on a fully automated system for nucleic acid extraction, RT-qPCR, and result generation. This study demonstrates the successful optimization of a WNV multiplex LDT (assay targets: ENV and NS1 genes) for high-throughput environmental surveillance testing of mosquito pool homogenates on the Panther Fusion System. Analytical sensitivity of the assay was 186 and 744 copies/PCR reaction for the ENV and NS1 targets, respectively. To assess the performance of this assay, a total of 80 mosquito pools were tested, including 60 previously tested pools and 20 spiked negative mosquito pools. Among the 60 previously tested specimens, the Panther Fusion WNV LDT demonstrated 100% positive and negative agreement with the CDC West Nile RT-qPCR assay. The Panther Fusion WNV LDT also detected all 20 spiked specimens. Abstract: Japanese encephalitis, caused by the JE virus transmitted by mosquitoes, is the most common type of epidemic encephalitis in Asia. It is endemic in most of South and Southeast Asia, but the number of cases can vary greatly between areas. While many infections do not lead to disease, the symptomatic cases can be very severe and life-threatening. It mainly affects children, whereas adults are generally immune to the disease due to either being infected in childhood or receiving vaccination. However, individuals who are not immune, such as travelers from non-endemic countries, are susceptible to the disease when exposed to the virus for the first time, regardless of age. Without antiviral treatment options, vaccination is the only strategy to establish effective protection against Japanese encephalitis.

This research work was planned to test biosafety of different nanomaterials on the different animals models. These nanoparticles were previously used as potential insecticides of mosquito larvae. The biosafety of these nanoproducts were evaluated on certain organs of non target animals that associated with mosquito breeding sites in Egypt. Animal organs such as the kidneys of rats, toads, and the fish's spleen were used as models to study the biological toxicity of these nanomaterials. After 30 days of the animals receiving the nanomaterials in their water supply, different cell mediated immune cells were assessed in these tissues. Both TNF-α and BAX immuno-expression were also used as immunohistochemical markers. Histopathology was conducted to detect the effect of the tested nanoproducts at the tissue level of the liver and kidneys of both the rats and toads. Green nanoemulsion of the lavender essential oil was relatively more effective, safe, and biodegradable to be used as insecticides against mosquito larvae than the metal-based nanomaterials., (© 2024. Background: Sporozoites (SPZ), the infective form of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, can be inoculated into the human host skin by Anopheline mosquitoes. These SPZ migrate at approximately 1 µm/s to find a blood vessel and travel to the liver where they infect hepatocytes and multiply. In the skin they are still low in number (50-100 SPZ) and vulnerable to immune attack by antibodies and skin macrophages. This is why whole SPZ and SPZ proteins are used as the basis for most malaria vaccines currently deployed and undergoing late clinical testing. Mosquitoes typically inoculate SPZ into a human host between 14 and 25 days after their previous infective blood meal. However, it is unknown whether residing time within the mosquito affects SPZ condition, infectivity or immunogenicity. This study aimed to unravel how the age of P. falciparum SPZ in salivary glands (14, 17, or 20 days post blood meal) affects their infectivity and the ensuing immune responses., Methods: SPZ numbers, viability by live/dead staining, motility using dedicated sporozoite motility orienting and organizing tool software (SMOOT), and infectivity of HC-04.j7 liver cells at 14, 17 and 20 days after mosquito feeding have been investigated. In vitro co-culture assays with SPZ stimulated monocyte-derived macrophages (MoMɸ) and CD8 + T-cells, analysed by flow cytometry, were used to investigate immune responses., Results: SPZ age did not result in different SPZ numbers or viability. However, a markedly different motility pattern, whereby motility decreased from 89% at day 14 to 80% at day 17 and 71% at day 20 was observed (p ≤ 0.0001). Similarly, infectivity of day 20 SPZ dropped to ~ 50% compared with day 14 SPZ (p = 0.004). MoMɸ were better able to take up day 14 SPZ than day 20 SPZ (from 7.6% to 4.1%, p = 0.03) and displayed an increased expression of pro-inflammatory CD80, IL-6 (p = 0.005), regulatory markers PDL1 (p = 0.02), IL-10 (p = 0.009) and cytokines upon phagocytosis of younger SPZ. Interestingly, co-culture of these cells with CD8 + T-cells revealed a decreased expression of activation marker CD137 and cytokine IFNγ compared to their day 20 counterparts. The paper presents an innovative computational framework for predictive solutions for simulating the spread of malaria. The structure incorporates sophisticated computing methods to improve the reliability of predicting malaria outbreaks. The study strives to provide a strong and effective tool for forecasting the propagation of malaria via the use of an AI-based recurrent neural network (RNN). The model is classified into two groups, consisting of humans and mosquitoes. To develop the model, the traditional Ross-Macdonald model is expanded upon, allowing for a more comprehensive analysis of the intricate dynamics at play. To gain a deeper understanding of the extended Ross model, we employ RNN, treating it as an initial value problem involving a system of first-order ordinary differential equations, each representing one of the seven profiles. This method enables us to obtain valuable insights and elucidate the complexities inherent in the propagation of malaria. Mosquitoes and humans constitute the two cohorts encompassed within the exposition of the mathematical dynamical model. Human dynamics are comprised of individuals who are susceptible, exposed, infectious, and in recovery. The mosquito population, on the other hand, is divided into three categories: susceptible, exposed, and infected. For RNN, we used the input of 0 to 300 days with an interval length of 3 days. The evaluation of the precision and accuracy of the methodology is conducted by superimposing the estimated solution onto the numerical solution. In addition, the outcomes obtained from the RNN are examined, including regression analysis, assessment of error autocorrelation, examination of time series response plots, mean square error, error histogram, and absolute error. A reduced mean square error signifies that the model's estimates are more accurate. The result is consistent with acquiring an approximate absolute error close to zero, revealing the efficacy of the suggested strategy. This research presents a novel approach to solving the malaria propagation model using recurrent neural networks. Nanoscale carbon was obtained from six widely used plastics (PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP and PP) via thermal degradation (600 °C) under inert atmosphere. The thermally degraded products were processed through bath sonication followed by lyophilisation and the same was characterized through proximate analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, Transmission electron micrograph (TEM), Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A series of aqueous solution of nanoscale carbon (5-30 mg/L) were prepared and same were used as both mosquito growth inhibitor and larvicidal agent against 3rd and 4th instar larvae of Culex pipiens. The significant percent mortality results were recorded for LDPE (p < 0.007) with average particle size of 3.01 nm and 62.95 W% of carbon and PS (p < 0.002) with average particle size of 12.80 nm and 58.73 W% of carbon against 3rd instar larvae, respectively. Similarly, for 4th instar larvae, both significant pupicidal and adulticidal activity were also recorded for PET (F = 24.0, p < 0.0001 and F = 5.73, p < 0.006), and HDPE (F = 26.0, p < 0.0001) and F = 5.30, p < 0.008). However, significant pupicidal activity were observed for PVC (F = 6.90, p < 0.003), and PS (F = 21.30, p < 0.0001). Histological, bio-chemical and microscopic studies were revealed that nanoscale carbon causes mild to severe damage of external and internal cellular integrity of larvae. However, nanoscale carbon does not exhibit any chromosomal abnormality and anatomical irregularities in Allium cepa and Cicer arietinum, respectively. Similarly, non-significant results with respect to blood cell deformation were also recorded from blood smear of Poecilia reticulata. Background: Culex pipiens pallens and Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus are the dominant species of Culex mosquitoes in China and important disease vectors. Long-term use of insecticides can cause mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) gene of mosquitoes, but little is known about the current status and evolutionary origins of vgsc gene in different geographic populations. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the current status of vgsc genes in Cx. p. pallens and Cx. p. quinquefasciatus in China and to investigate the evolutionary inheritance of neighboring downstream introns of the vgsc gene to determine the impact of insecticides on long-term evolution., Methods: Sampling was conducted from July to September 2021 in representative habitats of 22 provincial-level administrative divisions in China. Genomic DNA was extracted from 1308 mosquitoes, the IIS6 fragment of the vgsc gene on the nerve cell membrane was amplified using polymerase chain reaction, and the sequence was used to evaluate allele frequency and knockdown resistance (kdr) frequency. MEGA 11 was used to construct neighbor-joining (NJ) tree. PopART was used to build a TCS network., Results: There were 6 alleles and 6 genotypes at the L1014 locus, which included the wild-type alleles TTA/L and CTA/L and the mutant alleles TTT/F, TTC/F, TCT/S and TCA/S. The geographic populations with a kdr frequency less than 20.00% were mainly concentrated in the regions north of 38° N, and the geographic populations with a kdr frequency greater than 80.00% were concentrated in the regions south of 30° N. kdr frequency increased with decreasing latitude. And within the same latitude, the frequency of kdr in large cities is relatively high. Mutations were correlated with the number of introns. The mutant allele TCA/S has only one intron, the mutant allele TTT/F has three introns, and the wild-type allele TTA/L has 17 introns., Conclusions: Cx. p. pallens and Cx. p. quinquefasciatus have developed resistance to insecticides in most regions of China. The area is characterized by being humid tropical, with an average temperature of 26ºC and humidity of 92%, while the annual precipitation is approximately 1570 mm 3 . Background: Mosquitoes inhabiting urban green spaces and cemeteries in Europe represent a crucial facet of public health concern and contribute to the ecological balance. As urbanization intensifies, these areas increasingly serve as vital habitats for various mosquito species, fostering breeding grounds and increasing the risk of disease transmission., Methods: A study was conducted in the three main cities (inland, coastal, and estuarine) of the Basque Country, northern Spain, to investigate the species composition, abundance, dynamic populations, larval habitats, and host preferences of mosquitoes in urban green spaces and cemeteries. CDC traps and dipping were used to collect mosquitoes for 2 years (2019-2020)., Results: A total of 21 mosquito species were identified, with Culex pipiens s.l. being the most abundant and widespread. The three ecological forms of Cx. pipiens were found, and Cx. pipiens pipiens was the most common in both green areas and cemeteries. Morphological identification together with molecular tools identified 65 COI sequences with high homology. The highest species richness was found in the inland city, followed by the coastal city and the estuarine city. Mosquito abundance was significantly higher in green areas compared to cemeteries and in the coastal and estuarine cities compared to the inland city. The investigation of larval breeding sites highlighted the dominance of Cx. pipiens s.l., particularly in semi-artificial ponds, diverse water-holding containers (tyres and buckets) and drainage systems in green areas; in cemeteries, most of the larvae were found in flowerpots and funerary urns. Seasonal activity exhibited variable peaks in mosquito abundance in the different cities, with a notable increase in July or August. Background: Haemagogus janthinomys is a primary sylvan vector of yellow fever virus and the emerging Mayaro virus. However, despite its medical importance, there is a dearth of data on the molecular taxonomy of this mosquito species. Methods: In this study, DNA barcoding analysis was performed on 64 adult female mosquitoes from Trinidad morphologically identified as Hg. janthinomys. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene and ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region of the mosquitoes were PCR amplified and sequenced, and molecular phylogenies inferred. Results: The BLASTN analysis showed that only 20% ( n  = 13/66) of COI sequences had high similarity (>99% identity) to Hg. janthinomys and the remaining sequences had low similarity (<90% identity) to reference GenBank sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of COI sequences revealed the presence of four strongly supported groups, with one distinct clade that did not align with any reference sequences. Corresponding ITS2 sequences for samples in this distinct COI group clustered into three clades. Conclusions: These molecular findings suggest the existence of a putative new Haemagogus mosquito species and underscore the need for further, more in-depth investigations into the taxonomy and classification of the Haemagogus genus.

Adult mosquitoes, sometimes in vast numbers, visit flowers in their search for floral nectar. Mosquitoes are of great medical significance as vectors of many deadly diseases. Mitogenomes have been widely used in phylogenetic studies, but mitogenome knowledge within the family Culicidae is limited, and Culicidae phylogeny is far from resolved. In this study, we surveyed the mitogenomes of 149 Culicidae species, including 7 newly sequenced species. Comparative analysis of 149 mosquito mitogenomes shows gene composition and order to be identical to that of an ancestral insect, and the AT bias, length variation, and codon usage are all consistent with that of other reported Dipteran mitogenomes. Phylogenetic analyses based on the DNA sequences of the 13 protein-coding genes from the 149 species robustly support the monophyly of the subfamily Anophelinae and the tribes Aedini, Culicini, Mansoniini, Sabethini, and Toxorhynchitini. To resolve ambiguous relationships between clades within the subfamily Culicinae, we performed topological tests and show that Aedini is a sister to Culicini and that Uranotaeniini is a sister to (Mansoniini + (Toxorhynchitini + Sabethini)). In addition, we estimated divergence times using a Bayesian relaxation clock based on the sequence data and 3 fossil calibration points. The results show mosquitoes diverged during the Early Jurassic with massive Culicinae radiations during the Cretaceous, coincident with the emergence of angiosperms and the burst of mammals and birds. Mosquitoes are important vectors of various pathogenic viruses. Almost all viruses transmitted by mosquitoes are RNA viruses. Therefore, to detect viral genes, mosquito samples must be kept at low temperatures to prevent RNA degradation. However, prolonged transport from the field to laboratory can pose challenges for temperature control. The aim of this study was to evaluate methods for preserving viral RNA in mosquito bodies at room temperature. Virus-infected mosquito samples were immersed in ethanol, propylene glycol, and a commercially available nucleic acid preservation reagent at room temperature, and viral RNA stability was compared. As a result, for the two RNA viruses (San Gabriel mononegavirus and dengue virus 1) subjected to this experiment, no significant decrease in the viral RNA was observed for at least eight weeks after immersion in the reagents, and the amount of RNA remaining was equivalent to that of samples stored at - 80 °C. Japanese encephalitis virus is mainly prevalent in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Oceania. Through immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry analysis using monoclonal antibodies targeting JEV E protein, we found that mosquito Histone 2A protein could bind to JEV particles. The binding of H2A and JEV was detected in the salivary gland and supernatant of mosquito cells. Furthermore, RNA interference experiments in vitro and in vivo confirmed that H2A protein promotes JEV infection in mosquitoes. In summary, we found that mosquito H2A is a factor that supports JEV infection and can potentially facilitate cross-species transmission of JEV.

The interactions between mosquitoes and plants and, particularly, between mosquitoes and plant sugars from flowers and other structures are often overlooked and are vastly underresearched compared to mosquito-vertebrate or mosquito-pathogen interactions. Given the importance of mosquito nectar-feeding behavior, as well as its impact on vectorial capacity and its implications for vector suppression, a better understanding of mosquito-plant interactions is needed. Direct observation of mosquitoes visiting plants to obtain sugar and other nutrients can be difficult because females may leave flowers to seek a blood meal from the observer, but this can be overcome with the right experimental procedures. Pakistan, a subtropical nation, has seen a rapid rise in Arboviral transmission in the past decade. Environmental hazards such as intense monsoon rains and yearly floods in addition to unsanitary living conditions pose an increased risk of arboviral infections. In recent years, the emergence and spread of West Nile virus (WNV), which can lead to a life-threatening meningoencephalitis, in Pakistan has alarmed the health care authorities of an impending outbreak. Background: The Magude Project assessed the feasibility of eliminating malaria in Magude district, a low transmission setting in southern Mozambique, using a package of interventions, including long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). As the efficacy of LLINs depends in part on their physical integrity, this metric was quantified for Olyset® Nets post mass-distribution, in addition to net use, care and handling practices and other risk factors associated with net physical integrity., Methods: Nets were collected during a cross-sectional net evaluation, nine months after the Magude project commenced, which was 2 years after the nets were distributed by the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP). The physical integrity of the nets was assessed by counting and sizing the holes at different positions on each net. A structured questionnaire was administered to assess how the selected net was used and treated (care, wash and repair). Net bio-efficacy was assessed following the standard World Health Organization (WHO) cone bioassay procedures., Results: Out of the 170 Olyset® Nets included in the analysis, 63.5% had been used the night before. The main reason for not using a net was the notion that there were no mosquitoes present. The average number of people using each net was 1.79. Two thirds of the nets had only been washed once or twice since distribution. Most nets (80.9%) were holed and 18% were torn, but none of the risk factors were significantly associated with net integrity, except for presence of mice in the household. Less than half of the participants noticed holes in holed nets, and of those only 38.6% attempted to repair those. None of the six nets that were tested for bio-efficacy passed the WHO threshold of 80% mosquito mortality., Conclusion: Overall the majority of Olyset® Nets were in serviceable condition two years post-distribution, but their insecticidal effect may have been lost. Background: Mosquito-borne diseases are on the rise. While climatic factors have been linked to disease occurrences, they do not explain the non-random spatial distribution in disease outbreaks. Landscape-related factors, such as vegetation structure, likely play a crucial but hitherto unquantified role., Methods: We explored how three critically important factors that are associated with mosquito-borne disease outbreaks: microclimate, mosquito abundance and bird communities, vary at the landscape scale. We compared the co-occurrence of these three factors in two contrasting habitat types (forest versus grassland) across five rural locations in the central part of the Netherlands between June and September 2021., Results: Our results show that forest patches provide a more sheltered microclimate, and a higher overall abundance of birds. When accounting for differences in landscape characteristics, we also observed that the number of mosquitoes was higher in isolated forest patches., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that, at the landscape scale, variation in tree cover coincides with suitable microclimate and high Culex pipiens and bird abundance. To detect and escape looming threats, night-flying insects must rely on other senses than vision alone. Nocturnal mosquitoes can evade looming objects in the dark, but how they achieve this is still unknown. Here, we show how night-active female malaria mosquitoes escape from rapidly looming objects that simulate defensive actions of blood-hosts. First, we quantified the escape performance of flying mosquitoes from an event-triggered mechanical swatter, showing that mosquitoes use swatter-induced airflow to increase their escape success. Secondly, we used high-speed videography and deep-learning-based tracking to analyze escape flights in detail, showing that mosquitoes use banked turns to evade the threat. By combining escape kinematics data with numerical simulations of attacker-induced airflow and a mechanistic movement model, we unraveled how mosquitoes control these banked evasive maneuvers: they actively steer away from the danger, and then passively travel with the bow wave produced by the attacker. Our results demonstrate that night-flying mosquitoes can detect looming objects when visual cues are minimal, suggesting that they use attacker-induced airflow both to detect the danger and as a fluid medium to move with away from the threat. This shows that escape strategies of flying insects are more complex than previous visually induced escape flight studies suggest. As most insects are of similar or smaller sizes than mosquitoes, comparable escape strategies are expected among millions of flying insect species. Background: Water quality is known to influence the development and survival of larval mosquitoes, which affects mosquito-borne pathogen transmission as a function of the number of mosquitoes that reach adulthood and blood feed. Although water properties are known to affect mosquito development, few studies have investigated the link among soil properties, water quality, and mosquito development. Given the large number of ground-breeding mosquito species, this linkage is a potentially important factor to consider in mosquito ecology. In this study, we explored the effects of different soils on multiple life history parameters of the ground-breeding mosquito species Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae)., Methods: Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae were reared in water combined with different soil substrates (sandy, silt, or clay loam textures) at increasing soil to water volume ratios, with and without the addition of organic matter (fish food). Gravid mosquitoes were offered different soil-water extracts to investigate soil effects on oviposition preference., Results: Without the addition of organic matter, larval survival and development differed significantly among waters with different soil textures and volumes of substrate. Mosquitoes in water with clay loam soil survived longer and developed further than mosquitoes in other soil waters. Larvae survived for longer periods of time with increased volumes of soil substrate. Adding organic matter reduced the differences in larval survival time, development, and pupation among soil-water extracts. Adult female mosquitoes oviposited more frequently in water with clay loam soil, but the addition of organic matter reduced the soil effects on oviposition preference., Conclusions: This study suggests soil composition affects larval mosquito survival and development, as well as the oviposition preference of gravid females. Background: Malaria is an infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Plasmodium. Human-to-human transmission depends on a mosquito vector; thus, the interruption of parasite transmission from humans to mosquitoes is an important approach in the fight against malaria. The parasite stages infectious to mosquitoes are the gametocytes, sexual stages that are ingested by the vector during a blood meal and transform into male and female gametes in the midgut. Immunity against sexual stage antigens expressed by gametocytes, gametes, and the zygote formed after fertilisation can interrupt the parasite sexual cycle in the mosquito. This transmission blocking immunity is mediated by specific antibodies ingested during the mosquito blood feed, inhibiting the parasite development in the midgut. Merozoite thrombospondin related anonymous protein (MTRAP) is a merozoite and gametocyte surface protein essential for gamete egress from erythrocytes and for parasite transmission to mosquitoes., Objectives: Here, we evaluated the potential of the P. berghei MTRAP to elicit antibodies with the ability to inhibit gamete fertilisation in vitro., Methods: We expressed a soluble recombinant PbMTRAP and used it to immunise BALB/c mice. The transmission blocking activity of the anti-rPbMTRAP antibodies was tested through in vivo challenge experiments followed by in vitro conversion assays., Findings: Immunisations with the rPbMTRAP induced a strong antibody response and the antibodies recognised the native protein by Western Blot and IFA. Anti-rPbMTRAP present in the blood stream of immunised mice partially inhibited gamete conversion into ookinetes., Conclusion: Our results indicate that antibodies to PbMTRAP may reduce but are not sufficient to completely block transmission.

Mosquitoes of the genera Aedes, Anopheles and Culex vector a wide range of pathogens seriously affecting humans and livestock on a global scale. Over-reliance on insecticides and repellents has driven research into alternative, naturally-derived compounds to fulfil the same objectives. Steam distilled extracts of four plants with strong, yet attractive, volatile profiles were initially assessed for repellency in a dual-port olfactometer using Aedes aegypti as the model species. Picea sitchensis was found to be the most repellent, proving comparable to leading products when applied at 100% (p = 1.000). Key components of conifer-derived volatile profiles were then screened via electroantennography before those components eliciting an electrophysiological response were assayed individually in the olfactometer; according to WHO protocol. The most promising 5 were selected for reductive analyses to produce an optimised semiochemical blend. This combination, and a further two variations of the blend, were then progressed to a multi-species analysis using the BG-test whereby bite-attempt frequency on hands was assessed under different repellent treatments; assays were compared between Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus. Efficacy was found against all three species, although it was found that Ae. aegypti was the most susceptible to the repellent, with An. gambiae being the least. Here, a novel, naturally-derived blend is presented with weak spatial repellency, as confirmed in laboratory assays. Background: Different mosquito control strategies have been implemented to mitigate or prevent mosquito-related public health situations. Modern mosquito control largely relies on multiple approaches, including targeted, specific treatments. Given this, it is becoming increasingly important to supplement these activities with rapid and mobile diagnostic capacities for mosquito-borne diseases. We aimed to create and test the applicability of a rapid diagnostic system for West Nile virus that can be used under field conditions., Methods: In this pilot study, various types of adult mosquito traps were applied within the regular mosquito monitoring activity framework for mosquito control. Then, the captured specimens were used for the detection of West Nile virus RNA under field conditions with a portable qRT-PCR approach within 3-4 h. Then, positive samples were subjected to confirmatory RT-PCR or NGS sequencing in the laboratory to obtain genome information of the virus. We implemented phylogenetic analysis to characterize circulating strains., Results: A total of 356 mosquito individuals representing 7 species were processed in 54 pools, each containing up to 20 individuals. These pools were tested for the presence of West Nile virus, and two pools tested positive, containing specimens from the Culex pipiens and Anopheles atroparvus mosquito species. As a result of subsequent sequencing, we present the complete genome of West Nile virus and Bagaza virus., Conclusions: The rapid identification of infected mosquitoes is the most important component of quick response adulticide or larvicide treatments to prevent human cases. The conceptual framework of real-time surveillance can be optimized for other pathogens and situations not only in relation to West Nile virus. Background: Maintaining mosquito colonies in the laboratory requires a blood supply so that females' oocytes can mature and oviposition can take place. In this study, a new artificial hematophagy system for colonization and maintenance of Culex quinquefasciatus in the laboratory was developed and tested., Methods: We developed an attractive polymeric biofilm including 25% L-lactic acid for use as a membrane in an artificial hematophagy system and compared the feeding rate of females with Parafilm-M ® . We also evaluated the oviposition rate, larval survival and adult emergence of females fed through the attractive biofilm., Results: The average percentage of female Cx. quinquefasciatus fed through the attractive biofilm was 87%, while only 20% became engorged with Parafilm-M ® (p < 0.0001). Feeding through the attractive biofilm developed in this study produced high levels of evaluated biological parameters; the percentage of egg laying by females that underwent artificial hematophagy through the biofilm was 90%, with an average of 158 eggs per raft. From these eggs, 97% of the larvae hatched, of which 95% reached the pupal stage. The adult emergence rate corresponded to 93% of pupae., Conclusions: Insects fed with attractant through the biofilm system had a higher engorgement rate compared to those fed through Parafilm-M ® . Our study is preliminary and suggests that polymeric biofilm has great potential for artificially feeding mosquitoes in the laboratory. Anthropogenic activities are altering ecosystem stability and climate worldwide, which is disturbing and shifting arbovirus vector distributions. Although the overall geographic range of some epidemiologically important species is recognized, the spatiotemporal variation for other species in the context of climate change remains poorly understood. Here we predict the current potential distribution of 9 species of Culex (Melanoconion) based on an ecological niche modeling (ENM) approach and assess spatiotemporal variation in future climate change in the Neotropics. The most important environmental predictors were the mean temperature of the warmest season (27 °C), precipitation during the driest month (50 mm), and precipitation during the warmest season (>200 mm). The best current model for each species was transferred to the future general circulation model IPSL-CM6A-LR, using 2 shared socioeconomic pathway scenarios (ssp1-2.6, ssp5-8.5). Under both scenarios of climatic change, an expansion of suitable areas can be observed followed by a strong reduction for the medium-long future under the worst scenario. The multivariate environmental similarity surface analysis indicated future novel climates outside the current range. However, none of the species would occur in those areas. Even if many challenges remain in improving methods for forecasting species responses to global climate change and arbovirus transmission, ENM has strong potential to be applied to the geographic characterization of these systems. The Yucatan Peninsula is a biogeographic province of the Neotropical region which is mostly encompassed by the 3 Mexican states of Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán. During the development of the International Joint Laboratory ELDORADO (Ecosystem, bioLogical Diversity, habitat mOdifications and Risk of emerging PAthogens and Diseases in MexicO), a French-Mexican collaboration between the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) and UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) in Mérida, it became evident that many putative mosquito species names recorded in the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula were misidentifications/misinterpretations or from the uncritical repetition of incorrect literature records. To provide a stronger foundation for future studies, the mosquito fauna of the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula is here comprehensively reviewed using current knowledge of taxonomy, ecology, and distribution of species through extensive bibliographic research, and examination of newly collected specimens. As a result, 90 mosquito species classified among 16 genera and 24 subgenera are recognized to occur in the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula, including 1 new peninsula record and 3 new state records., (© The Author(s) 2023. Anopheles sarpangensis Somboon, Namgay & Harbach is described as a new species of the Barbirostris Complex of the subgenus Anopheles Meigen. The adults differ from other species of the complex in having wings with a prehumeral pale spot on the costa, foretarsomere 1 with an apical pale band more than half as long as foretarsomere 5, midtarsomeres 1 and 2, and occasionally 3 and 4, with incomplete apical pale bands, and abdominal sterna with many white scales as in An. campestris Reid, An. saeungae Taai & Harbach, and An. wejchoochotei Taai & Harbach. The pupa and larva are indistinguishable from the pupae and larvae of other species of the complex. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that COI sequences form a clade separate from clades consisting of the sequences of other species of the complex. Mosquito-borne diseases represent a significant threat to human and animal health in the United States. Several viruses, including West Nile, Saint Louis encephalitis, and Eastern equine encephalitis are endemic. In humans, the disease is typically detected during the summer months, but not during the winter months. The ability of these viruses to reemerge year after year is still not fully understood, but typically involves persistence in a reservoir host or vector during periods of low transmission. Mosquito species are known to overwinter at different life stages (adults, larvae, or eggs) in manufactured or natural sites. Gopher tortoise burrows are known to serve as refuge for many vertebrate and invertebrate species in pine savannas. In this study, we surveyed the interior of gopher tortoise burrows for overwintering mosquitoes. We identified 4 species (Anopheles crucians s.l., Culex erraticus, Mansonia dyari, and Uranotaenia sapphirina). Cx. erraticus was the most abundant, and its presence and abundance increased in winter months, implying that this species utilized gopher tortoise burrows for overwintering. Bloodfed Cx. erraticus and An. crucians s.l. females were detected. While An. crucians s.l. fed exclusively on the white-tailed deer, Cx. erraticus had a more diverse host range but fed primarily on the gopher tortoise. Tortoises and other long-lived reptiles like the American alligator have been shown to sustain high viremia following West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) infection and therefore could play a role in the maintenance of these viruses. In addition, Cx. erraticus is naturally infected with WNV and is a known bridge vector for EEEV. Background and Justification: The Republic of Djibouti is located in the Horn of Africa, on the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb detroit, at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. Prior to its independence in 1977, the Republic of Djibouti was known by two names: "Côte française des Somalis" until 1967, then "Territoire Français de Afars et Issas". As part of our doctoral research on the ecology of mosquitoes in Djibouti, we noted a lack of information on the species encountered, and felt it essential to draw up a list of species before embarking on ecological monitoring. The aim of this work is to survey publications on mosquitoes in Djibouti and to synthesize data from this scientific literature in order to update the national inventory of Culicidae., Materials and Methods: An exhaustive search of electronic bibliographic databases (PubMed, Scopus, HAL Open Archive, Science Direct and Google Scholar) was carried out. Reference lists were filtered to access additional articles in order to obtain more data. Two keywords were used: "Djibouti" and "French Territory of Afars and Issas". A selection of scientific publications on Djibouti mosquitoes and/or diseases transmitted by mosquito vectors was made. Researches were conducted in articles selected. The names of the species listed were checked and validated by referring to the site Mosquito Taxonomic Inventory., Results: A total of 13 studies, published between 1970 and 2023, were found. Over the years, the composition of the Culicidae fauna has become well known. In part, the movement of people traveling to and from neighboring countries has been linked to the detection of new species and the reappearance of mosquito species in Djibouti. Numerous studies have been carried out over the years, including purely taxonomic studies and others focusing on the incrimination of mosquito vectors and the characterization of the pathogens they transmit. A total of 37 species, belonging to two subfamilies (Anophelinae and Culicinae), of mosquitoes divided between 7 genera (Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, Culiseta, Lutzia, Mimomyia and Uranotaenia) have been mentioned across the country. The number of species per genus is distributed as follows: 5 species of Aedes including 1 subspecies, 14 species of Anopheles including two subspecies, 12 species of Culex including 1 subspecies, 1 species for each of the genera Culiseta and Lutzia and finally 2 species respectively for the genera Mimomiya and Uranotaenia. Five species have been incriminated as vectors of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, West Nile virus and chikungunya. Others are known for their potential role in pathogen transmission, including Zika and Rift Valley virus., Discussion - Conclusion: The bibliographical research enabled us to summarize the research carried out over more than half a century in the history of Djibouti, and to update the inventory of the country's mosquitoes, which now includes 37 species. Species names were reviewed and updated, and the case of Anopheles gambiae was also addressed. Two species mentioned as part of the Culicidae fauna of Djibouti appeared to be doubtful and are up for discussion. These results provide a useful information base for defining vector control priorities in Djibouti. They will also inform, guide and facilitate future consultations of our database. Culicids in Argentinean Patagonia are characterized by low species diversity and adaptation to extreme environmental conditions, yet few studies have been conducted in the region. To further assess the occurrence of Culicidae in Western Patagonia, and in particular the presence of Culex pipiens bioforms at the southernmost extent of their distribution, immature and adult specimens were collected aboveground across various land uses located in shrubland, steppe, and deciduous forest between 38.96 and 46.55°S. Mosquitoes were reported at 35 of the 105 inspected sites. Five species from the genus Culex were identified, all of which were present in the steppe and the forest, while only Cx. apicinus and members of the Cx. pipiens complex were collected in the shrubland. Within the latter, a total of 150 specimens were molecularly identified by PCR amplification of Ace-2 and CQ11 loci. The first-to-date occurrence of bioform pipiens in South America is reported, along with the first records of Cx. quinquefasciatus signatures in Patagonia. In addition, the distribution of Cx. acharistus and Cx. dolosus as south as Santa Cruz province is expanded, and the first record of Cx. eduardoi in Río Negro province is provided. Immature specimens of Cx. pipiens were conspicuous in human-made aquatic habitats (both containers and in the ground), while Cx. acharistus was more prominent in artificial containers and Cx. eduardoi was mainly in ground habitats, either natural or human-made. These findings provide valuable insights into the distribution and ecological roles of these mosquito species in a region of extreme environmental conditions., (© 2024.
