Some aspects of the life and work of Dr. Claudio Julio Puente Fonseca, Second Degree Specialist in Pediatric Surgery, Associate and Consultant Professor in Santiago Medical Sciences University, are mentioned in this work. During several years he was the Provincial Group Head of the Speciality. His achievements in assistance, teaching, contributions to the correct use of Spanish and of the medical terminology were relevant for his pupils and colleagues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work aimed at widen the biographical data of the eminent Cuban scientist Antonio María Béguez César and to spread not very well-known aspects of his prolific existence. The personal files of Béguez López family and the index of authors and matters of the Pediatrics Cuban Society Bulletin and the Pediatrics Cuban Magazine were consulted, where his active bibliography is consigned; also, documents of that time were analyzed and testimonies of family, colleagues and friends of the distinguished pediatrician from Santiago were considered. The work is part of the investigative project "Strategy to increase the visibility of the pediatrician Dr. Antonio María Béguez César scientific finding" that reveals the discoverer of "the family malignant chronic neutropenia with atypical granulations of the leukocytic cells", clinical entity inscribed among the ten landmarks of the Cuban immunology that has been erroneously spread in the scientificmedical world as Chediak-Higashi syndrome. Introducción: Fidel Castro constituye un ejemplo indeleble a seguir por todos los cubanos. Su incansable lucha determinó el desarrollo y consolidación de la Medicina en Cuba. Objetivo: describir la relación existente entre la figura histórica de Fidel Castro Ruz y la medicina revolucionaria cubana. Método: se realizó una revisión bibliográfica y documental de los diferentes artículos publicados relacionados con la figura de Fidel Castro Ruz y su relación con el desarrollo de la Medicina cubana actual. Se utilizaron métodos de análisis-síntesis, deducción-inducción e histórico-lógico. Conclusiones: el líder indiscutible de la Revolución Fidel Castro Ruz jugó un rol fundamental en el surgimiento y consolidación de la Medicina Revolucionaria, y su presencia desde el inicio significó el cumplimiento de lo propuesto en el programa del Moncada.

Fernando Méndez Capote estuvo implicado en los sucesos del 27 de noviembre de 1871 y fue el más longevo sobreviviente de este brutal evento. Formó parte de la fundación del primer Centro Médico Farmacéutico en la Isla. Realizó la primera ovariotomía de la ciudad de Cárdenas. Participó en el Primer Congreso Médico Regional celebrado en La Habana, y a finales de 1894 fue distinguido como “Hijo Predilecto de Cárdenas”. Fundó en su ciudad natal la primera clínica ginecológica del país. Ocupó en el año 1899 el cargo de alcalde de la cuidad de Cárdenas. En 1917 fue designado para la Secretaría de Salud y Beneficencia de Cuba. Fue Miembro Honorario, de Mérito y vicepresidente de la Academia de Ciencias Médicas, Físicas y Naturales de La Habana. Se trazó como objetivo de la presente investigación reconocer los principales aspectos relacionados con la vida y obra de tan ilustre médico.

The onset of Neurology in Cuba go back to the beginning of the XIX century, but its definition as independent specialty was mainly due to the intense assistance, educational and investigative work of professor José Rafael Estrada González. An important landmark was the creation of the Neurology and Neurosurgery Institute in 1962. In the province of Santiago de Cuba the first neurologists began to work in the 70's and since 1983 the postgrade teaching began. During those years the educational, assistance and investigative work of the specialty has consolidated, fully integrated to all programs and tasks of the health system in the country. En el presente trabajo se mencionan importantes aspectos de la vida y obra del Dr.C. Guillermo Amaro Ivonet; personalidad científica consagrada a la asistencia médica de la población infantil. La influencia de este ilustre pediatra en la formación de los médicos de niños de Santiago de Cuba ha sido encomiable. Su querida ciudad natal y su patria toda, se enorgullecen de haber podido contar con su prodigiosa sapiencia, caballerosidad, humanismo, ética profesional y ayuda médica para los más débiles, por más de 50 años

Se realiza un recorrido histórico sobre los hechos más relevantes del Hospital de Cienfuegos, desde la época de la colonia, la república neocolonial y la etapa revolucionaria hasta nuestros días, con el ánimo de rendir tributo a personas y a hechos que se consideran de interés divulgar, para aportar conocimientos que sirvan, sobre todo, para ilustrar y educar a las generaciones de nuevos profesionales y trabajadores de la institución.

En este artículo se ofrecen evidencias documentales que fundamentan la verdad histórica de la precedencia del Dr. Antonio María Béguez César en el descubrimiento de la neutropenia crónica maligna familiar con granulaciones atípicas de los leucocitos, comúnmente divulgada como síndrome de Chédiak-Higashi; razón por la cual los aportes del médico cubano resultan prácticamente invisibles para la comunidad científica nacional y extranjera, y para el pueblo al que tanto sirvió. El actual documento forma parte del Proyecto Ramal, con el objetivo de proporcionar una mayor visibilidad a la vida y obra del ilustre pediatra santiaguero, quien describió el cuadro clínico de una enfermedad hasta entonces desconocida, pero luego divulgada de muy diversas maneras para confundir a la comunidad científica en cuanto a su legítimo autor. Del mismo modo se presentan fragmentos de la información publicada sobre el hallazgo, así como bibliografía actualizada, novedosa y fidedigna respecto a tan importante y controvertido asunto. Por último, se abordan otros aspectos personales y profesionales del Dr. Béguez César -- considerado como el Padre de la Pediatría en las provincias orientales de Cuba --, cuyos extraordinarios méritos le hacen acreedor de figurar perpetuamente entre las personalidades insignes de la ciencia cubana

In this work some aspects of the purified life history of the Cuban doctor Esteban Roberto Regalado García are mentioned, who on November 27th, 1960 was designated by the students graduated from the third course of Medicine, after January 1st, 1959, to present the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, in a ceremony that took place in the Havana University steps; with a copy of the communication known as "Declaration of principles"; a document with present force and future presage. En el presente artículo se expone brevemente la historia de la salud pública en Cuba, la cual se remonta a la época en que vivieron los primitivos pobladores en la Isla. El estudio se dividió en cinco períodos de la historia cubana: el precolombino, el colonial, el intervencionista, el de la república mediatizada y el revolucionario socialista. El trabajo permitió presentar los aspectos más significativos que caracterizaron la salud pública en Cuba desde el descubrimiento hasta el triunfo revolucionario.In this article we briefly expose the history of the public health in Cuba, going back to the times when the first inhabitants of the island lived here. The research was divided into five periods of the Cuban history: the pre-Columbus one, the colonial one, the period of the American intervention, the republican period and the revolutionary period. The work allowed us to present the most significant aspects characterizing public health in Cuba from the discovery to the revolutionary triumph.

Se realizó una reseña histórica del Centro Médico Farmacéutico, de Cárdenas, fundado en 1882 por el doctor Dionisio José Sáez, siendo este su primer presidente. Este centro fue el primero en Cuba con tales características. Se esbozó el devenir del Centro Médico Farmacéutico, sus principales aportes a la Medicina cubana, sus fundadores y miembros, así como su conversión, en el año de 1926, en el Colegio Médico de Cárdenas, también considerado como primicia médica en Cuba. Se trazó como objetivo reconocer el importante papel que jugó el Colegio Médico de Cárdenas en el desarrollo de la historia de la Medicina en Cuba, así como citar brevemente a los principales miembros del Colegio Médico durante la etapa colonial, neocolonial y el triunfo de la Revolución Cubana.We made a historical review of the Medico Pharmaceutical Center of Cardenas, founded in 1882 by Dr. Dionisio José Sáez, its first president. This center was the first one in Cuba with such characteristics. We outlined the development of the Medico Pharmaceutical College, its main contributions to Cuban medicine, its founders and members, and also its conversion, in 1926, in the Medical College of Cardenas, considered too as a medical first-fruit in Cuba. Recognizing the important role played by the Medical College of Cardenas in the history of the medicine in Cuba was our objective, as soon as briefly citing the main members of the Medical College during the colonial, neocolonial periods and after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.

Todas las ciencias han tenido una historia plagada de personalidades e incidentes, todas han abordado sus principios, leyes y particularidades con un propósito, con sus métodos e ideas. Este trabajo, memoria y tributo, tiene como finalidad dejar testimonio de los inicios y el desarrollo de la Psicología en Cienfuegos, desde la primera graduación de sus profesionales en la Universidad Central de Las Villas, hasta su comienzo en la provincia; abarca el primer periodo de trabajo de los graduados, así como su continuidad desde el año 1966 a 1971 y relaciona las tareas desarrolladas por sus iniciadores y la contribución que estos hicieron a su ciencia y a la sociedad.

With this small historical review we want to acknowledge the work of a group of professors who began teaching at a very young age, since the founding of Higher Medical Teaching in the Medical school Raúl Dorticós Torrado in Cienfuegos, and in the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Service in the University hospital Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima. The first group of Pre and Post Graduated courses began in September, 1st 1982, with the arrival of the first group of fifth year of Medicine from Santa Clara Medical School and the beginning of the residency by Dr. Eduardo Sarmiento Sánchez after an educational accreditation of the Service by a National Commission headed by Professor René Lorie Pérez.

In this work a historic análisis is made about the teaching of Medicine in Cuba, since its beguining back in 1726 until present days, that is why the study has three stages: Colony, Neocolony, and Revolution, with the aim of carrying out a hystorical reflection on the formation of the physician in Cuba. We use history as a methodological criterium, but it is interesting to highlight the evolution of practical and political ideas that mark the tendencies and regularities of the process in question.

Este trabajo es un antecedente importante para la epidemiología hospitalaria, además de curioso por haber sido diseñado por el eminente filósofo y sacerdote, quien aun lejos del ejercicio de la medicina, se preocupaba por el bienestar de sus semejantes que necesitaban un período de hospitalizaciónSummary Comments are made on an article written by Father Félix Varela Morales that was published in the Repertorio Médico Habanero, in 1841, and in which it is explained the design of a system to improve air and its circulation in hospitals. This paper is an important antecedent for hospital epidemiology, besides being curious for having been designed for the outstanding philosopher and priest, who was always worried about the well-being of those needing hospitalization, in spite of the fact that he did not practice medicine.

Dr. Antonio María Béguez César (1895-1975) was a Cuban physician, considered as Father of the Pediatrics in the eastern provincies of his country. He discovered a strange disease in 1933 whose description was spread 10 years later in the Bulletin of the Cuban Society of Pediatrics, as family malignant chronic neutropenia with atypical granulations of the leukocytic cells, although it didn't prevent that another person borrowed the scientific finding that has been known in the medical environment as Chédiak-Higashi syndrome. Although in the first Latin American Day of Hematology Cooperative Studies, taking place in Havana in February, 1973, his finding was recognized, the public silence in this respect remained until the end of last century and first years of the XXI, when already and ever his life and work fully support the long lasting homages that are being devoted to his memory, according to the historical truth and the scientific rigor, and as an example of apology to the physician whose unquestionably own merit was borrowed. The altruistic story of a group of young people that by the time they finished their medicine studies, in 1960, chose for their graduation the name "Las Ardillas" is briefly exposed in this work. From 200 members of that course, graduated in Havana University, 25 came to Santiago de Cuba, and of them, 8 stayed in this city where they have dedicated their lives to the most human of all the tasks. Due to the festivities for the 495 anniversary of Santiago de Cuba foundation, the Municipal Assembly of the People's Power awarded, in solemn session, the distinction of City Illustrious Sons, to these prestigious professionals. "Las Ardillas" were the first to swear, sign and give to the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, their commitment of serving to those most destitute in any place of the Cuban island. El cólera es una enfermedad infectocontagiosa que causa grandes epidemias, evoluciona por pandemias y en lugares donde el saneamiento ambiental básico es deficiente y no se aplican estrategias coherentes de control de la enfermedad puede llegar a convertirse en endémica. Este mal arribó a Cuba en 1833, como parte de la segunda pandemia mundial. Se plantea que su entrada pudo evitarse, pero los intereses económicos y políticos del grupo social en el poder provocaron que se debilitaran las medidas de acordonamiento sanitario y que oficialmente la enfermedad se declarara controlada, mientras que en realidad, la morbilidad y mortalidad se mantuvieron durante más tiempo. Por lo anterior, la presencia del cólera en La Habana tuvo un fuerte impacto demográfico y se estima que el diez por ciento de la población falleció por su causa. El objetivo de esta investigación es documentar la llegada del cólera a Cuba y su impacto demográfico, para lo cual se siguió el método histórico. La técnica utilizada es la revisión documental, mediante la cual se examinaron y transcribieron documentos de archivos; además se analizaron informes y se consideró la literatura científica publicada en la época sobre la epidemia en Cuba y en la región caribeña. Aunque se encontró evidencia del elevado índice de mortalidad causado por este mal, no fue posible establecer una cifra definitiva, pues las fuentes estadísticas son parciales, sin embargo se demuestra que hubo una mayor afectación entre la población negra y la clase pobre.

In this work important aspects of the life and work of DSc Guillermo Amaro Ivonet are mentioned, scientific personality consecrated to the medical care of the children population. The influence of this illustrious pediatrician in the training of pediatric doctors from Santiago de Cuba has been praiseworthy. His dear natal city and his whole homeland are proud of having his prodigious knowledge, chivalry, humanism, professional ethics and medical help for the weakest patients, for more than 50 years. In this work documental evidences are offered which establish the historical truth of Dr. Antonio María Béguez César's precedence in the discovery of the family malignant chronic neutropenia with atypical granulations of leukocytes, commonly known as Chédiak-Higashi syndrome; reason why the Cuban doctor's contributions are practically invisible for the national and foreign scientific community, and for the people to whom he cared so much. The current document is part of the Brunch Project, with the objective of providing a greater visibility to the life and work of the illustrious Santiago pediatrician who described the clinical pattern of an unknown disease, but then revealed in very diverse ways to confuse the scientific community as for its legitimate author. In the same way fragments of the information published on the discovery are presented, as well as updated, novel and trustworthy literature regarding such an important and controversial matter. Lastly, other personal and professional aspects of Dr. Béguez César are approached - considered as the Father of Pediatrics in the eastern provinces in Cuba--whose extraordinary merits make him worthy of perpetually being among the famous personalities of the Cuban science. The evolution of neurology in Cuba was considered in stages related with the general historical development of public health, and was divided regarding various aspects: the development of remarkable neuroscientific's, the foundation of neurological institutions, the formation and distributions of neurologist, the introduction of modern services, the main neurological health problems, etc. The main achievements of Cuban neurology were stated, without obviation of lacks and challenges. Introduction: Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, also known as "El Padre de la Patria", wrote accurate notes in his campaign diary and personal letters about a recurrent headache he used to suffer. By means of these notes a clinical history was deduced which included: location of pain, starting way, intensity, duration, frequency, other related symptoms and evolution through time during five years. Development: Céspedes suffered from nearly three episodes of a gradual starting headache each month, which developed in minutes to hours and lasted for a few hours to one day. The pain was variable in its intensity, sometimes unilateral, with nausea as accompany symptom and related to stress, sleeping problems, under nourishment and tobacco abstinence. Usually, it also induced the necessity of rest. Conclusion: It was certainly a chronic disease which appears to be common migraine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El doctor Carlos J. Finlay como Jefe del Departamento de Sanidad en Cuba, dedicó tiempo y esfuerzos a la Higiene Escolar. Reglamentó las inspecciones escolares, junto con la Comisión de Enfermedades Infecciosas por él creada, estimuló las conferencias sobre tuberculosis en las escuelas, apoyó las clases de desarrollo físico y garantizó el desayuno a los niños asistentes, luchó por la aplicación de las vacunas conocidas en la época, dirigió y coordinó las Ordenanzas Sanitarias, que pasan a ser el Primer Código Sanitario de Cuba, que entre sus muchos aspectos reglamentaba el suministro de agua, el expendio de alimentos y los requisitos higiénicos para escuelas y colegios, todo lo cual estaba al nivel de los más avanzados conocimientos de su tiempo en materia de Higiene Escolar. Por todo lo cual, no se puede hablar de Higiene Escolar en Cuba sin hacer recordación de quien fuera uno de sus promotores, Finlay.Dr. Carlos J. Finlay, acting as Head of the Sanitation Department of Cuba, devoted time and efforts to the school hygiene. He instructed the school surveys together with the Infectious Disease Commission created by him, encouraged the giving of lectures on tuberculosis at schools; supported the physical education classes and guaranted the breakfast for children attending the school. Finlay also strove for the administration of the vaccines known at the time; directed and arranged the Sanitary Ordinances, the first Sanitary Code of Cuba that regulated, among other things, water supply, food sale and the hygiene requirements for schools and colleges, all of which was considered to be among the most advanced knowledge at that age in terms of school hygiene. Therefore, Cuban scool hygiene can not be dealt with without making reference to one of its greatest fosterers: Dr. Finlay.

Objective: To evoke some remarkable aspects of Professor Carlos Manuel Ramírez Corría life (February 24 of 1903- March 27 of 1977) Development: Professor Carlos Manuel Ramírez Corría, the first president of Cuban Society of Neurology and Neurosurgery, generate various projects related with family, sciences, education, social development and politics. He guided Cuban neurosurgery to creep, and in 1947 it began to run with the foundation of the first neurosurgery service in the "Calixto García" Hospital. Also he promotes stereotaxic, neuroendoscopy, reduced access surgery, and models for neurosurgery training. Conclusions: A teacher like Ramírez Corría must live between us because we repeat the anecdotes related with him and the influence in our capacity of thinking, in our perspective of life, in the way of our work. Objective: Our interest is to investigate through the history of our specialty by the review of bibliographical sources and documents in prestigious provincial, national and international institutions related fundamentally to the neurosciences. Development: Skull trepanation is the most ancient surgical procedure that we know. The first skull trepanations were found in Peru 500 or more years B. C. Since then there's a long way about neurosurgical report cases in the history of humankind. In Cuba since the first half of the XIX century began to appear articles about patient with neurological pathologies, but it was not until 1891 that the fact of a neurological procedure was published in the Cuban medical press as a remarkable deed. We searched about the first work of scientific character, appeared in the Cuban medical literature dealing with a procedure on the brain. His author is Dr. Manuel Moreno de La Torre and the clinical discussion of the case, and the details of surgical procedure are in volume 17 of the magazine "Crónica Médico-Quirúrgica de la Habana" of 1891 under the title· "Abceso cerebral, trepanación, curación, recidiva y muerte". Conclusions: We hope that our investigation will be a source of motivation for doctors and historians to go deep in the roots of each of the medical specialties, a lovely and instructive way to respect our predecessors. José Joaquín Navarro Villar fue un médico homeópata y patriota cubano del siglo XIX. Su vida estuvo vinculada a la lucha por la independencia de Cuba, a la vez que realizó un importante aporte a la materia médica homeopática al introducir dos nuevos medicamentos: Comocladia dentata y Tarentula cubensis. En el presente trabajo, se hizo referencia a algunos de los principales aspectos de su vida, incluyendo su vinculación con las luchas independentistas y sus aportaciones a la homeopatía.José Joaquín Navarro Villar was a Cuban homeopathic physician and patriot of the XIX century. His life was related with the struggles for Cuban independency, and he also made an important contribution to the Homeopathic Materia Medica when he introduced two new medicines, Comocladia dentata y la Tarentula cubensis. In the current communication we make reference to some of the main aspects of his life, including his connections with the independent struggles and his contributions to Homeopathy.

El cólera es una enfermedad infecciosa y extremadamente contagiosa. La primera irrupción epidémica en Cuba ocurrió en 1833, y provocó más de 30 000 defunciones; la segunda, en marzo de 1850; y la tercera, en octubre de 1867. Sobre su decurso por Cuba, los estragos producidos y los aportes de médicos y estudiosos del tema trató este trabajo, que no aporta nada nuevo a los apuntes bibliográficos e históricos existentes, pero que rememora lo sufrido en la Isla en el siglo XIX, producto a esta enfermedad, así como la magnitud de la epidemia, que propició la reestructuración de la organización de la salud pública colonial y demostró el trabajo desplegado por los médicos de la época, en aras de controlar y evitar la diseminación de la misma.The cholera is an infectious and extremely contagious disease. This work deals with the course of the disease, the ravages it produced and the contributions of physicians and scientific to this theme, bringing nothing new to the existent historical and bibliographic works, but remembering what the citizens of the Island suffered in the XIX century as a result of this disease, and also the magnitude of the epidemics, propitiating the reorganization of the colonial public health and highlighting the job of the physicians to control and avoid the disease spreading.

En conmemoración al 177 aniversario del natalicio del Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Barres, sin lugar a dudas, el más grande médico y científico cubano, se realizó una breve revisión histórica, con el objetivo de exponer el sentimiento de compañerismo y amistad que le profesara el Dr. Juan Guiteras Gener, quien dedicó, además, una gran parte de su vida y obra a reivindicar la gloria de Finlay, y a defender la teoría por él elaborada, la cual fue posteriormente conceptualizada en la expresión sintética de finlaísmo. Recordando algunos de los pasajes más fecundos del ilustre médico matancero, cuyo nombre lleva con orgullo la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de la provincia, y a quien se le hace justicia y tributo de honor al denominarlo el fundador del finlaísmo entre sus compatriotas.Commemorating the 177 anniversary of Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Barres, without any doubts the biggest Cuban physician and scientific, we made a brief historical review, with the objective of exposing the sense of comradeship and friendship professed to him by Dr Juan Guiteras Gener, who also dedicated great part of his life and work to vindicate Finlay's glory, and to defend the theory he elaborated, and was later conceptualized in the synthetic expression of finlayism. We remember some of the most prolific passages of the illustrious Matanzas physician, whose name carries the Medicine Faculty of the provincial Medical Sciences University, and whom we make justice and rend honor when calling him the founder of finlayism among his fellow countrymen.

En este trabajo se hace una referencia a la vida y obra del doctor matancero Armando Carnot Veunles, graduado en el año 1905 como Cirujano Dental, y en 1907 como Doctor en Medicina. Su labor médica se destacó fundamentalmente por la ayuda y atención a varios gremios de trabajadores de la ciudad de Matanzas y a la clase humilde de la sociedad. Por tal motivo fue conocido como el "Médico de los Pobres".This work refers to the life and work of the Matanzas physician Armando Carnot Veulen, graduated in 1905 as Dental Surgeon, and in 1907 as Doctor in Medicine. His medical work was mainly distinguished by helping and caring several labor unions of Matanzas and the low classes of the society. For that reason he was known as the Physician of the Poors.

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal en la Facultad de Medicina No.1 de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Santiago de Cuba, en diciembre de 2009, con vista a precisar cuánto conocían 60 estudiantes que cursaban el primer año de la carrera de medicina, acerca de la historia local, particularmente sobre la vida y obra de Gloria Cuadras de la Cruz, combatiente de la clandestinidad en el territorio. Los resultados revelaron un predominio de la función instructiva y la necesidad de fortalecer la labor educativa relacionada con los antecedentes históricos de la realidad revolucionaria actual.A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out at the Faculty I from the University of Medical Sciences in Santiago de Cuba, in December, 2009 with the purpose of determining what did 60 first year-students of the medicine career know about the local history, particularly about the life and work of Gloria Cuadras de la Cruz, an underground combatant in the territory. Results revealed a prevalence of the instructive function and the necessity to strengthen the educational work related to the historical causes of the current revolutionary reality.

Se exponen los antecedentes históricos del surgimiento de la economía de la salud, con énfasis en el logro de una adecuada correlación entre economía y salud, lo cual resultaba un absurdo en tiempos pasados. También se realiza una periodización de esta rama en Cuba hasta los momentos actuales, así como un análisis de las principales reformas del sector sanitario en el ámbito internacional.Historical background of the emergence of the health economy are exposed, emphasizing the achievement of an appropriate correlation between economy and health, which was an absurdity in past times. It is also carried out a periodization of this branch in Cuba up to date, as well as an analysis of main reforms of the health sector in the international sphere.

Próximamente, en agosto, conmemoramos el Aniversario 108 del natalicio del profesor Pedro Kourí Esmeja (1900-1964). Imaginar la Parasitología sin sus aportes científicos es tanto o más que un imposible. Su contribución al desarrollo de la Medicina y a la enseñanza de la Parasitología en Cuba, y su colaboración con múltiples universidades al nivel internacional, hacen que su nombre sea imprescindible mencionarlo cuando se habla de las Ciencias Médicas. Un lugar muy significativo ocupó la Universidad de La Habana en la vida de Pedro Kourí, en el multifacético quehacer que lo caracterizó. En esta nota histórica, queremos homenajear su trabajo y dedicación, destacar su consagración al estudio y la enseñanza, que hacen de él una de las figuras cimeras de la Medicina Cubana del siglo XX.Next August we will be celebrating the 108th anniversary of Professor Pedro Kouri Esmeja (1900-1964). To imagine parasitological science without his scientific thoughts is impossible. His contribution to the development of Medicine to the teachings of Parasitological sciences in Cuba, and his many international collaborations, make a must to mention his name when talking about medical sciences in Cuba. An important place in Pedro Kouri’s life occupied The Havana University in the multifaceted way he reached. In this historical note we want to pay a tribute to his work and dedication, to demonstrate his consecration to studies and teaching which make of him one of the most important representatives of Cuban medicine in the XX th Century.

Como resultado de búsqueda y recuperación de información registrada en documentos de archivos, libros, revistas y otras fuentes, se confeccionó una obra de referencia, donde se registran pequeñas biografías de 19 camagüeyanos que se desempeñaron como médicos cirujanos, médicos y cirujanos romancistas en los siglos XVIII y XIX. Se dan a conocer los antecedentes que sirvieron de motivación a la realización del estudio y se explica el radio de acción, en el aspecto asistencial, de los que ostentaban estas categorías profesionales. Los datos obtenidos a partir de las fuentes consultadas, fueron el punto de partida para la confección de un material que informa el quehacer de los profesionales de la salud de la región camagüeyana en esa época y que se espera sea de interés y utilidad a los interesados en el temaAs a result of the search and collection of information registered in documents, books, magazines and other sources, a reference paper that presents the biographies of 19 Camagüeyan medical surgeons, doctors and surgeons that lived in the XVIII and XIX centuries was made. The antecedents that served as motivation to the realization of the study are made known and the action radius is explained, taking into account their role in medical assistance. This comprises all those that had the above-mentioned professional categories. The data obtained from the sources consulted, constituted the starting point for the making of a material that informs about Camagüeyan health professionals of that time. It is also expected that this scientific paper is of interest and utility for those interested in this topic

Una búsqueda en la historia de las publicaciones de la provincia de Camagüey, fundamentalmente revistas y periódicos que incluyeron artículos de carácter científico entre las décadas del treinta y el cincuenta del siglo XX, es propósito esencial de este trabajo. El sondeo realizado permitió la valoración de la figura de la primera doctora camagüeyana en Medicina Gertrudis Aguilera Céspedes (Tula) y su actuación descollante en este período. Para ello se revisaron los documentos que atesoran la Sala de Fondos Raros y Valiosos de la Biblioteca Provincial “Julio Antonio Mella”, el Departamento de Investigaciones del Museo Provincial “Ignacio Agramonte” y bibliotecas particulares de algunos médicos y profesionales del territorio. La búsqueda condujo a la demostración del impacto que en el orden científico representó esta galena y además, una contribución para preservar la memoria cultural de nuestra ciudadA search in the Camagüey´s publications, mainly articles with scientific purposes during the thirty's up to the fifty's in the XX Century, is covered under the scope of this work. The study was carried out to value the figure of the first female doctor in Medicine Gertrudis Aguilera Cespedes (Tula) and her outstanding performance at that time. Some journals and documents from different libraries were revised. The search led to the demonstration of the impact that Tula Aguilera represented for this scientific field, at the same time this is a contribution to preserve the cultural memory of Camagüey city
