Fast and heavy inorganic scintillators with suitable radiation tolerance are required to face the challenges presented at future hadron colliders of high energy and intensity. Up to 5 GGy and 5 × 1018 neq/cm2 of one-MeV-equivalent neutron fluence is expected by the forward calorimeter at the Future Hadron Circular Collider. This paper reports the results of an investigation of proton- and neutron-induced radiation damage in various fast and heavy inorganic scintillators, such as LYSO:Ce crystals, LuAG:Ce ceramics, and BaF2 crystals. The experiments were carried out at the Blue Room with 800 MeV proton fluence up to 3.0 × 1015 p/cm2 and at the East Port with one MeV equivalent neutron fluence up to 9.2 × 1015 neq/cm2, respectively, at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Experiments were also carried out at the CERN PS-IRRAD proton facility with 24 GeV proton fluence up to 8.2 × 1015 p/cm2. Research and development will continue to develop LuAG:Ce ceramics and BaF2:Y crystals with improved optical quality, F/T ratio, and radiation hardness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In spin noise spectroscopy, the magnetic susceptibility spectrum is known to be provided by the spin-system untouched by any external perturbation, or, better to say, disturbed only by its thermal bath. We propose a new version of spin noise spectroscopy, with the detected magnetization (Faraday-rotation) noise being "stimulated" by an external fluctuating magnetic field with a quasiwhite spectrum. An experimental study of the stimulated spin noise performed on a BaF 2 : U 3 + crystal in a longitudinal magnetic field has revealed specific features of this approach and allowed us to identify the Van-Vleck and population-related contributions to the AC susceptibility of the system and to discover unusual magnetic-field dependence of the longitudinal spin relaxation rate in low magnetic fields. It is shown that spectra of the stimulated and spontaneous spin noise, being both closely related to the spin-system magnetic susceptibility, are still essentially different. Distinctions between the two types of the spin-noise spectra and two approaches to spin noise spectroscopy are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A cross polarized wave (XPW) generation experiment with double BaF2 crystals in air was demonstrated with 120 µJ input pulse. A circular aperture was used to truncate the near field profile of the input beam and remove the outer part of the beam, and circularly symmetric beam profiles were generated at the BaF2 crystal positions. The measured focal spot size was close to the diffraction limit, and the energy stability of XPW was improved from ∼1.89% (without the aperture) to ∼0.67% (with the aperture). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a study of upconversion luminescence in BaF2–HoF3 crystals in the visible spectral region under excitation to the 5I5 level of Ho3+ ions by laser radiation with a wavelength of 890 nm. For these excitation conditions, we propose mechanisms responsible for upconversion luminescence from the 5F3, 5S2(5F4) and 5F5 levels of Ho3+ ions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Processes of photo-induced electron transfer from a bivalent acceptor lanthanide (Eu, Sm, and Yb) onto a trivalent donor lanthanide (Nd, Sm, Dy, Tm, and Yb) and the inverse thermally activated transfer are studied in barium fluoride crystals. At room temperature, photoinduced electron transfer is accompanied by oncoming displacement of the interstitial charge-compensating fluoride ion. On photoquenching at low temperatures, a bivalent donor lanthanide remains next to the interstitial fluoride ion, which causes a redshift of its 4f–5d absorption bands. The shift increases as the lanthanide size decreases (as in the series Nd, Sm, Dy, Tm, and Yb). A detailed analysis of the mechanisms of photo and thermal electron transfers between the different lanthanide centers in BaF2 crystals is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of nonempirical quantum chemical calculations of CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2 crystals that were activated by In3+ and Ga3+ ions have been presented. The calculations were performed in the framework of density functional theory using the VASP software complex. The estimation of the width of the band gap of defect-free crystals have been carried out by different methods and the influence of impurity ions on the band gap width has been estimated as well as the possibility of getting rid of shallow traps by introducing an impurity of indium or gallium has been investigated. The influence of erbium ion concentration on the optical properties of BaF2:ErF3 crystals was investigated. Four ErF3 concentration (0.05, 0.08, 0.15 and 0.5 mol% ErF3)-doped BaF2 crystals were obtained using the Bridgman technique. Room temperature optical absorption in the 250–850 nm spectral range was measured, and the photoluminescence (PL) and decay times were also investigated. The Judd–Ofelt (JO) approximation was used, taking into account four absorption peaks (at 377, 519, 653 and 802 nm). The JO intensity parameters, Ωt (t = 2, 4, 6), were calculated. The influence of the ErF3 concentration on the JO parameters, branching ratio, radiative transition probability and radiative lifetime were studied. The obtained results were compared with measured values and with those reported in the literature. Under excitation at 380 nm, the well-known green (539 nm) and red (668 nm) emissions were obtained. The calculated and experimental radiative lifetimes were in millisecond range for green and red emissions. The intensity of the PL spectra varied with the Er3+ ion concentration. The emission intensity increased linearly or exponentially, depending on the ErF3 concentration. Under excitation at 290 nm, separate to the green and red emissions, a new UV emission band (at 321 nm) was obtained.
