Crystal size distributions (CSD) of olivine were obtained for 17 samples of plagiodunite and Pl‑bearing dunite from the central part of the Yoko-Dovyren massif, northern Baikal region, Russia. Three types of CSD were identified: loglinear, bimodal, and lognormal. Combining these data with the results of petrological reconstructions, which earlier revealed two main types of the Dovyren magmas (using the method of geochemical thermometry), we proposed a basic scenario of interaction between magmatic suspensions of different temperature to explain the diversity of the CSD. The intratelluric olivine transported by magmas of different temperature, which had not subjected to abrupt cooling or heating in the chamber, retained an original loglinear CSD. For some portions of the hottest magma (∼1290°C), it is assumed that the original olivine evolved into a bimodal CSD due to accelerated crystallization at faster cooling of the high-temperature injections contacting relatively cold crystal mush (∼1190°C). An interpretation of the lognormal CSD suggests that part of the olivine crystals composing the protocumulate systems efficiently interacted with the pore melt infiltrating upward during the compaction of the underlying crystal mush. This led to cycles of partial dissolution and regrowth of the olivine grains resulting in a final lognormal CSD. The infiltrating hot melt, which was undersaturated with immiscible sulfide liquid, could dissolve sulfides preexisting in the low-temperature mush. This produced dunites with lognormal CSD relatively depleted in sulfur and chalcophile elements. This paper presents the results of petrographical, mineralogical, geochemical, and isotope-geochemical studies of granophyres and host ferrogabbros, quartz ferromonzogabbros, quartz monzodiorites, and quartz monzonites in the Mesoproterozoic Valaam sill in the Ladoga Graben on the Karelian Craton. The sill is poorly layered: the ferrogabbros compose the lower part of the sill, the middle part consists of quartz gabbro-monzonites and quartz monzonites, while graphic leucogranites (granophyres) form a dense network of veins mainly in the upper part of the sill. Geochemical features of ferrogabbro, iron-rich composition of olivine and pyroxene, and low Ca composition of plagioclase indicate the evolution along the Fenner trend. The granophyres have petro- and geochemical characteristics of anorogenic alkaline granites, with negative Eu/Eu* = 0.15–0.49 and REE distribution patterns similar to those of granophyres of layered intrusions. All rocks of the sill have close Sr isotopic composition (87Sr/86Sr)T = 0.7043–0.7066, and εNd values ranging from −9.6 to −11.2. Model calculations show that fractional crystallization can lead the initial ferrogabbro melt into the immiscibility field. Ilmenite–magnetite–silicate microstructures have been identified in the ferrogabbro and ferromontzogabbro from the sill; similar microstructures in layered intrusions are considered as evidence for the immiscibility of Fe-rich and Si-rich liquids (Holness et al., 2011; Dong et al., 2013). The segregation of the high-silica melt may have occurred in an intermediate crustal chamber at around 350 MPa and 960oC; magma was supplied as crystalline mush at the sill emplacement level at around 70 MPa and acidic melt migrated through it. This melt underwent fractional crystallization and interacted with host minerals. At the level of sill emplacement, it crystallized under supercooling into granophyre aggregates. The example of the Valaam sill shows that when the Fenner fractionation reaches the final composition–-ferrogabbro, its further evolution with a conjugate decrease in SiO2 and Fe contents can be related to the incomplete separation and mixing of Fe-rich melts and immiscibly split felsic melt. The surface gap of tephriphonolite compositions in the Passa Quatro alkaline complex, in SE Brazil, is attributed to non-buoyancy of these high viscosity intermediate compositions during magmatic fractional crystallization at different depths. Thermodynamic and Rayleigh models for three alkaline suites of a strongly silica-undersaturated series were integrated to demonstrate that parental (basanite, nephelinite and alkaline basalt) and residual (phonolites) magmas are cogenetic by fractional crystallization at pressures of 10 kbar and 5 kbar, i.e. at magma chambers located above and below the Conrad discontinuity within the Upper Cretaceous-Palaeogene 40 km-thick continental crust in SE Brazil. The fractional crystallization of the parental magmas produced an ultramafic residual solid (wehrlite, olivine-bearing clinopyroxenite and clinopyroxenite) and residual liquids (evolved basanite and alkaline basalt, and phonotephrite). The latter moved up and built magma chambers at lower depths in the continental crust where those magmas initially crystallized clinopyroxenite extracts and high viscosity residual liquid that was entrapped and prevented to ascent towards the surface. Then, an abrupt change in the extract mineralogy produced a feldspathic-rich extract (leucocratic leucite monzosyenite, mesocratic syenite or leucocratic monzodiorite) and a residual phonolitic liquid with low viscosity. Following the feldspar crystallization, the magma viscosity decreased, acquiring adequate buoyancy that resulted in shallow-crust magma chambers in which phonolite diversification took place. These processes occurred due to the existence of a transcrustal, plumbing architecture where the high viscosity intermediate tephriphonolites were prevented to reach shallower depths, resulting in the Daly gap observed in the Passa Quatro Alkaline Complex. Fluorite-dominated rocks are occasionally found in association with carbonatites, but their geologic and petrologic relations are rarely reported. The Dunkeldyk area of the Pamir mountains in south-eastern Tajikistan contains dikes of distinctive rocks composed of calcite, fluorite, celestine-barite, sulfides, apatite, with minor quartz, biotite, and REE fluorcarbonates. The dikes have sharp contacts with the host (meta-)sedimentary rocks and layering with ribbons, ranging from fluorite-bearing calcite carbonatites to fluoritites (rocks with >50% fluorite). The fluoritites are characterized by high Ca, F, Ba, Sr, REE, and S coupled with anomalously low O. The geologic relations and textures suggest a magmatic origin of the dikes from melts close to calcite–fluorite eutectic that experienced nucleation-controlled differentiation during the crystallization of dikes and the formation of fluoritite cumulates in larger intrusions. The Dunkeldyk dikes demonstrate that sizable geological bodies of fluorite-dominated rocks could form from carbonate–fluoride melts originating from the differentiation of alkaline silicate magmas. Petrographic, geochemical, and isotope–geochemical studies of the Mesoproterozoic volcanic association (lava flows and the Valaam sill) in the Ladoga graben in the suture zone of the Karelian craton and Svekofennian orogenic complex are conducted. Ferrobasites of close composition and geological position in lava flows and the sill have different Nd isotopic compositions, differing by 5 units of εNd(t): = –4...–5 in ferrobasalts of lava flows and a very low-radiogenic Nd isotopic composition in mafic rocks of the sill (εNd(t) to –11 for ferrogabbros), and identical to the isotopic composition of its acidic rocks (εNd(t) to –11 for granophyres). It is shown that in the crust, which is heterogeneous in age, the process of fractional crystallization along the tholeiitic trend combined with assimilation of melts from wall rocks of magma chambers could have been an effective mechanism for forming such "paradoxical" features of the Nd isotopic composition. The isotopic composition of sill rocks indicates the likely occurrence of Mesoarchean blocks in the lower crust of the Ladoga graben region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Silicic magmas are the most viscous of all magmas, however some granitic plutons display remarkably homogeneous compositions, which contradicts the hypothesis that mechanical mixing is the main homogenizing process in the magma chamber. Thus much remains controversial about the mechanisms responsible for the homogeneities of silicic plutons. Here, we present textural observations, elemental mapping, and in situ elemental and Nd‐O isotopic data of apatites from the compositionally homogeneous Late Permian Yuanyang A‐type granitic pluton (SW Yunnan, South China). Apatite grains display oscillatory chemical zonation and resorption‐precipitation texture, suggesting incremental growth dominated by co‐genetic magma batches injection. The intra‐/inter‐grain core to rim elemental and Nd‐O isotopic variations imply crystal transfer and crystallization from different melt domains within the crystal mush. We propose that rejuvenation events associated with hotter cogenetic intermediate magma batch injection has induced crystal mush reactivation and convective stirring in silicic magma chambers, thereby homogenizing the entire reservoir. However, some silicic magma bodies have homogeneous compositions and structures, such as the Late Permian Yuanyang A‐type granites (YAGs) in southwestern South China, and the actual homogenizing process in silicic magma chamber is still unclear. Accessory apatite is ubiquitous in felsic plutons, whose growth zoning could reflect magma chamber evolution. Apatite grains collected from the YAGs show complex resorption‐precipitation texture. Their core‐rim oscillatory elemental and Nd‐O isotopic variations suggest compositional perturbations of ambient magma, probably caused by the injection/mixing of multiple magma pulses. Accordingly, we propose that hot magma recharge could reactivate the crystal‐mush, causing magma convection and stirring that gradually homogenized the silicic magma chamber. Decompression-induced crystallization is an important process that controls the behavior of volcanic eruptions because it strongly affects magma rheology and degassing behavior in the shallow parts of volcanic conduits. Several decompression experiments have been performed to understand and model the crystallization processes; however, the effect of superheating (i.e., heating above the liquidus temperature for a definite period of time) before decompression has not been elucidated, despite the proposal of its importance in previous cooling experiments. As the superheating influences the number of pre-existing crystals and melt homogeneity, it is expected to control decompression-induced crystallization. In this study, we investigated the effects of pre-existing crystals and melt homogeneity on crystallization during the decompression of rhyodacitic magma at a temperature of 900 °C. The magma studied herein has a liquidus temperature of ~920 °C. Five starting materials were prepared via heating at different superliquidus temperatures (940, 970, 1050, and 1300 °C) and a sub-liquidus temperature (900 °C) using an internally heated pressure vessel and a cold-seal pressure vessel, respectively. Decompression experiments using these starting materials were conducted from 130 to 30 MPa at decompression rates of 5, 20, and 100 MPa h–1. When the melt was completely homogenized (at 1050 and 1300 °C), no crystals were formed at 100 MPa h–1 and the small amounts of crystals heterogeneously formed along the capsule wall were found at 5 and 20 MPa h–1. At the same decompression rate, the number density of plagioclase formed during decompression increased as the superheating temperature decreased from 970 to 900 °C, despite the higher number densities of pre-existing crystals before decompression in the samples with lower superheating. Such finding indicates that nucleation occurs easily when the number density is initially high. This result is inconsistent with the idea that nucleation occurs when supersaturation is sufficient to overcome the energy barrier for nucleation, and the growth of pre-existing crystals decreases supersaturation. In contrast, the results of our experiments can be explained by considering that higher superheating results in a more homogeneous melt structure with few pre-crystal clusters, which are growth sites, and ultimately the suppression of nucleation. Based on these results, we conclude that pre-existing crystals and melt homogeneity strongly affect the crystal texture formed by decompression. For application to natural systems, the high number density of microlites found in natural samples may be due to heterogeneous nucleation caused by the presence of pre-crystal clusters and other mechanisms. Furthermore, the superheating of magma in a reservoir caused by the injection of high-temperature mafic magma may influence the crystal texture during magma ascent and, hence, control the explosivity of the eruption. Halogens are powerful tracers for the accretion of Earth's volatiles. Their sensitivity to Earth's differentiation, such as core formation, magma ocean crystallization, and planetary evaporation allows us to track such major events and the origin of Earth's building blocks. Here we examine the role of magma ocean crystallization in fractionating F/Cl ratio of the BSE by experimentally determining the partitioning behavior of F and Cl between silicate melt and crystallized minerals. Previous experimental data, due to technical challenges, are only available at pressures <25 GPa. To simulate relevant conditions for deep magma oceans, we perform laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments to determine partition coefficients of F and Cl between bridgmanite and silicate melt at temperatures of ∼4000–4500 K and pressures of 33–55 GPa. Our data show that F and Cl are both strongly favored in silicate melt, with partition coefficients of F and Cl in the range of 0.12–0.16 and 0.007–0.017, respectively. Given plausible magma ocean scenarios, our results indicate that F and Cl are not significantly fractionated during crystallization of a deep magma ocean. Neglecting other potential processes that may fractionate F and Cl, the F/Cl ratio in the BSE should reflect that of Earth's building blocks. The processes that control the crystallization of magmas, namely nucleation and growth, remain poorly constrained. Classical nucleation theory (CNT) has so far not provided a unified framework to explain crystal number density in laboratory experiments and the field. We use numerical experiments to study the influence of different cooling rates and CNT parameters on the crystal number density measured under constrained conditions in laboratory experiments. With varying the magnitude of pre‐exponential factor (J0) of nucleation rate, which represents the number of cluster as heterogeneous nucleation sites, we find that the cooling rate exponent (ξ) of the crystal number density varies from 3/2 to −1, depending on the magnitude of J0, cooling rate and surface tension. Using the regime maps of ξ as functions of J0 and surface tension, we can successfully interpret the diversity of cooling rate exponents reported by laboratory experiments in terms of J0 and surface tension. For extreme case of a negative cooling rate exponent ξ = −1, we propose a new crystallization model with constant rates of nucleation and crystallization, which reproduces a log‐linear crystal size distribution. In this condition, it is interesting that the crystal growth rate is inversely proportional to time, even if the diffusion‐limited growth is inversely proportional to the square root of time. For the case study of zoning profiles in microlites formed by decompression‐induced crystallization during the Shinmoedake 2011 subplinian eruptions, the comparison between theoretical predictions and natural volcanic products supports that our model is well applicable to magma ascent processes. Plain Language Summary: Crystallization of magmas denotes the formation of crystals in cooling magmas owing to heat loss during their ascension to the Earth surface or to the decompression and vesiculation occurring during an eruption. Since it strongly depends on cooling rate, the crystal number density is the most relevant textural index of the final products of the ascending magmas, the erupted rocks. Continuous efforts have been made in theory, laboratory experiments and observation of natural rock samples to understand how the cooling rate of magmas controls the texture of the erupted materials. Yet the role that different factors play on the texture of rocks during crystallization remains poorly constrained. For instance, the crystal number density has been observed to increase with cooling rate in some laboratory experiments and show no dependence or even decrease in others. The model proposed here identifies the nucleation rate as the main parameter controlling the formation of crystals. This study provides a consistent framework to relate the crystal number densities measured in laboratory experiments and observed in natural samples to their cooling conditions. Ca-bearing nepheline found in the Kajishiyama basanite, Tsuyama Basin, southwest Japan, was investigated to clarify its genesis in silica-undersaturated magmas. The basanite contains olivine and augite as phenocrysts and microphenocrysts, with Ca-bearing nepheline, olivine, augite, ulvöspinel, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, apatite and zeolites in the groundmass. Zeolites are more abundant in coarser-grained samples. The whole-rock composition of the basanite is characterised by low SiO2 and P2O5 contents and high total Fe, MgO, Na2O, K2O, Ba and Sr contents. The Ca-bearing nepheline, ~20 μm in size, occurs in the mesostasis of the Kajishiyama basanite and contains up to 2.31 wt.% CaO and 16.75 wt.% Na2O, in contrast to nepheline from the Hamada nephelinite, southwest Japan. The approximate compositional formula of the Kajishiyama nepheline with the highest Ca content is (Ca0.467Ba0.013Na5.286K0.919□Total1.385)Σ8.070(Si0.912Al6.980Cr3+0.003Fe3+0.067 Mg0.017)Σ7.979Si8.000O32; i.e. Ne65.50Ks11.39Qxs11.22CaNe11.89. Basanites are defined as being nepheline-normative, however they are high in normative plagioclase, the amount of which increases with fractionation of the magma. Nepheline crystallised after plagioclase, at the last stage of magmatic solidification is enriched in Ca. Such Ca-rich nepheline only forms from a magma which is high in normative plagioclase, as is the case in the Kajishiyama basanite. In contrast, Ca-poor nepheline is precipitated from nephelinitic magmas that crystallise melilite instead of plagioclase, even when Ca contents are high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently reported major element, trace element, and volatile compositions of dacites erupted from Hekla Volcano, Iceland are inconsistent with an anatectic origin. In contrast, all of the data are consistent with dacitic melts being derived by modest amounts of crystallization of an anhydrous assemblage from an andesitic melt. Models that apply straightforward Gd, Yb, Th, and U concentrations, instead of ratios, to the problem show that the crystallization hypothesis remains valid, especially when uncertainties are propagated. We constrain the magma sources of representative post‐collisional ore‐associated and barren suites in the Sanjiang metallogenic belt, Southwest China. The ore‐associated suites generally have higher Mg# and Cr and Ni contents than the crustal melts. Also, they show wide ranges of whole‐rock Nd and zircon Hf isotopes that are similar to the subduction‐modified mantle‐derived alkaline volcanic rocks in the region. Combing with the geochemical model, we suggest that the ore‐associated suites dominantly originated from partial melts of subduction‐metasomatised mantle by fractional crystallisation. In contrast, the barren suites are mainly characterised by low Mg# and Cr and Ni contents that are comparable to the crustal melts and they have enriched whole‐rock Nd and zircon Hf isotopes, indicating a metasomatised lower crustal origin. The different magma sources play an important role in controlling the fertility of contemporary ore‐associated and barren magmatic suites during post‐collisional porphyry ore formation. Arc magmatism is fundamental to the generation of new continental or island arc crust. However, the mechanisms that add to the chemical complexity of natural calc-alkaline magmas ranging from basaltic to rhyolitic compositions are debated. Differentiation mechanisms currently discussed include magma mixing, assimilation, crustal melting, or (fractional) crystallisation. In this contribution, the differentiation of arc magmas by decompression-driven crystallisation is investigated. We performed a set of equilibrium crystallisation experiments at variable crustal pressures (200–800 MPa) on a hydrous high-Al basalt (3.5 wt.% of H2O in the starting material) with run temperatures varying from near-liquidus conditions (1110 °C) to 900 °C. Oxygen fugacity was buffered at moderately oxidising conditions close to the NNO equilibrium. Combining these novel experiments with previous polybaric fractional crystallisation experiments (Marxer et al., Contrib Mineral Petrol 177:3, 2022) we demonstrate the effects of pressure on the crystallisation behaviour of calc-alkaline magmas with respect to liquid and cumulate lines of descent, mineral chemistry, and phase proportions. Decompression shifts the olivine-clinopyroxene cotectic curve towards melt compositions with higher normative clinopyroxene and enlarges the stability field of plagioclase. This exerts a key control on the alumina saturation index of residual liquids. We argue that near-adiabatic (or near-isothermal) decompression accompanied by dissolution of clinopyroxene entrained during residual melt extraction in the lower crust keeps arc magmas metaluminous during crystallisation-driven differentiation thereby closely reproducing the compositional spread observed for natural arc rocks. The origin of intermediate to felsic potassic magmas is debated, and not much is known about the volatile content of potassic magmas associated with porphyry Cu (Au, Mo) deposits. To better understand the liquid line of decent of mafic potassic magmas and the behavior of volatiles during magma differentiation, we performed 19 experiments at 1.0 GPa and 1150 °C to 850 °C using piston cylinder presses. We developed a new experimental technique that involves a capsule liner made of single-crystal zircon to prevent the loss of Fe and S in the starting material to the noble metal capsule. The starting material is a high-Mg, basaltic trachyandesite (52 wt% SiO2, 12 wt% MgO, 1.9 wt% Na2O and 5.3 wt% K2O) from the Sanjiang region in southwestern China, doped with geologically realistic amounts of volatiles (i.e. 4.0 wt% H2O, 0.34 wt% CO2, 0.27 wt% Cl and 0.25 wt% S). The addition of 0.25 wt% S in the form of anhydrite internally buffered the experiments at an oxygen fugacity of 2.0 ± 0.5 log units above the fayalite–magnetite–quartz buffer, which is similar to the redox state of the Sanjiang variously evolved potassic magmas. The experimentally produced silicate melts match well with the Sanjiang intermediate to felsic magmas in terms of major, minor and trace element compositions, and also with regard to the S and Cl contents. The sequence of crystallizing minerals (olivine + clinopyroxene –> biotite ± orthopyroxene –> apatite –> K-feldspar) also fits with the one observed in the Sanjiang mafic to intermediate magmas. These results suggest that the Sanjiang intermediate to felsic magmas, including the porphyry Cu (Au, Mo)-forming magmas, can form solely by differentiation of potassic mafic magmas without any involvement of old crustal material. During experimental differentiation at 1.0 GPa, the S content of the evolving silicate melt first increased until ~57 wt% melt SiO2, and then decreased in response to precipitation of sulfides, sulfate melt and/or anhydrite, whereas the H2O and Cl contents of the evolving silicate melt increased exponentially until saturation in a CO2-rich fluid was reached at 60 to 65 wt% melt SiO2 and ~ 8 wt% melt H2O. During further magma differentiation the H2O and Cl contents of the evolving silicate melt remained constant until ~70 wt% melt SiO2, after which point the Cl content of the silicate melt decreased due to increased partitioning of Cl into the fluid phase ± increased fluid/melt ratio. Based on these experimental results and petrographic and geochemical evidence from natural samples, the Sanjiang porphyry Cu (Au, Mo)-forming magmas (65–70 wt% SiO2) are interpreted to have formed through differentiation of primitive, mantle-derived, potassic magmas in the lower crust (≥1.0 GPa), and to have ascended ±directly from the lower crust to shallow crustal levels. They likely contained 8 to 13 wt% H2O, 0.37 to 0.90 wt% Cl and 0.07–0.29 wt% S. This case study on the magma evolution in the Sanjiang region may have implications for the origin and nature of intermediate to felsic potassic magmas in various tectonic settings. Arc magmas, the building blocks of continental crust, are depleted in total iron (Fe), have higher ratios of oxidized Fe to total Fe (Fe3+/∑Fe), and record higher oxygen fugacities (fO2’s) compared with magmas erupted at mid-ocean ridges. Garnet crystallization could explain these observations if garnet removes substantial amounts of Fe2+, but not Fe3+, from magma, yet this model for continental crust generation has never been tested experimentally. Analysis of garnets and melts in laboratory experiments show that the compatibilities of Fe2+ and Fe3+ in garnet are of similar magnitudes. Our results indicate that fractional crystallization of garnet-bearing cumulates will remove 20% of total Fe from primary arc basalts but negligibly alter the Fe3+/∑Fe ratio and fO2 of the melt. Garnet crystallization is unlikely to be responsible for the relatively oxidized nature of basaltic arc magmas or the Fe-depletion trend observed in continental crust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New geochemical data, including Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes for whole-rock and groundmass samples, are reported for edifice-forming eruptives at Tongariro volcano, New Zealand, which span its ~ 350 ka to late Holocene history. Tongariro eruptives are medium-K basaltic-andesites to dacites (53.0–66.2 wt% SiO2) that evolved via assimilation-fractional crystallisation (AFC) processes partly or mostly in the uppermost 15 km of the crust. When ordered chronologically using a high-resolution 40Ar/39Ar-dated eruptive stratigraphy, the compositional data show systematic 10–130 kyr cycles. Mafic replenishment events inferred from MgO values occurred at ~ 230, ~ 151, ~ 88 and ~ 56 ka and in the late Holocene, with high-MgO flank vents erupting at ~ 160, ~ 117, ~ 35 and ~ 17.5 ka. Cycles in Sm/Nd, 87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd and Pb isotopic ratios, which are decoupled from MgO, K2O and Rb/Sr cycles, indicate periods of prolonged crustal residence of magmas from ~ 230 to ~ 100 ka and ~ 95 to ~ 30 ka. AFC modelling shows that intermediate and silicic melt compositions, with r-values between 0.1 and 1, are needed to reproduce Tongariro compositional arrays. AFC models also indicate that ~ 20% of the average Tongariro magma comprises assimilated (meta)sedimentary basement material. Locally, Tongariro and adjacent Ruapehu volcanoes attain their most crust-like 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd compositions at ~ 100 and ~ 30 ka, paralleling with zircon model-age crystallisation modes at the rhyolitic Taupō volcano ~ 50 km to the NNE. These coincidences suggest that the timing and tempo of magma assembly processes at all three volcanoes were contemporaneous and may have been tectonically influenced since at least 200 ka. During the differentiation of arc magmas, fractionating liquids follow a series of cotectics, where the co‐crystallization of multiple minerals control the melt compositional trajectories, commonly referred to as liquid lines of descent (LLD). These cotectics are sensitive to intensive properties, including fractionation pressure and melt H2O concentration, and changes in these variables produce systematic differences in the LLDs of arc lavas. Based on a compilation of experimental studies, we develop two major element proxies that exploit differences in LLDs to constrain the fractionation conditions of arc magmas. Near‐primary fractionating magmas evolve along the olivine‐clinopyroxene cotectic, which is pressure‐sensitive. We use this sensitivity to develop a proxy for early fractionation pressure based on the normative mineral compositions of melts with 8 ± 1 wt.% MgO. Fractionation in more evolved magmas is controlled by the clinopyroxene‐plagioclase cotectic, which is strongly sensitive to magmatic H2O contents. We use this relationship to develop an H2O proxy that is calibrated to the normative mineral components of melts with 2–4 wt.% MgO. These two proxies provide new tools for estimating the variations in pressure and temperature between magmatic systems. We applied these proxies to compiled major element data and phenocryst assemblages from modern volcanic arcs and show that in island arcs early fractionation is relatively shallow and magmas are dominantly H2O‐poor, while continental arcs are characterized by more hydrous and deeper early fractionation. These differences likely reflect variations in the relative contributions of decompression and flux melting in combination with distinct upper plate controls on arc melt generation. Plain Language Summary: Within volcanic arcs, magmas evolve from silica‐poor basalts to more silica‐rich compositions. This process is dominantly controlled by the minerals that crystallize from the magmas and generates characteristic changes in magma compositions that can be measured in erupted lavas. The crystallizing minerals and evolution in magma composition are sensitive to changes in the conditions at which magmas crystalize including the amount of water dissolved in the magma and the depth of crystallization within the crust. We develop two new methods that use changes in magma composition to understand how these conditions vary between different volcanic arcs. We find that arcs built on continental crust typically erupt lavas that began to crystallize at greater depths and are more water‐rich, while arcs built on oceanic crust primarily erupt water‐poor lavas that began to crystallize at shallower depths. The processes of crystallization differentiation, retrograde isotopic exchange, and autometamorphism are considered with reference to the Eocene granites of the Raumid massif, which consists of eight intrusive phases and serves as an example of a "natural laboratory". The work is based on oxygen isotope, petrographic, and geochemical study of representative samples from each intrusive phase of the massif. The isotopic and geochemical studies were carried out for all rock-forming minerals (Qz, Pl, Kfs, Bt) and their altered varieties. Based on geochemical features, the Raumid granites correspond both to A-type granites and to highly fractionated I-type granites. Our results show that the rocks of the Raumid massif are not the geochemical analog of the Eocene granitoids from the Qiangtang terrane of the Central Tibet or the Vanj complex, as it previously assumed (Chapman et al., 2018). We estimated that differentiation of felsic melts of the Raumid pluton occurred at T = 750–800°C, and P = 4.5–7.8 kbar and was mainly controlled by Pl crystallization. The melts were intruded into the hypabyssal zone in at least two stages: early (γ1–γ3) and late (γ4–γ8), although it is possible that the rocks of the γ7 and γ8 phases formed an additional separate stage. The closure temperature of the oxygen isotopic system of quartz (TQz) ranges from 420 to 610°C. The effect of the multiple intrusions of the melts on the TQz and apparent cooling rates is considered. The study of altered and unaltered minerals showed that autometamorphism partially overlapped with the retrograde oxygen isotope exchange in the cooling rock. The modelled δ18О values during Pl and Kfs alteration describes well the observed isotope data when the crystallization takes place at limited content of water fluid (W/M = 0.3–0.05) which could release during the Raumid's magmas crystallization. Extensional tectonics are marked by shallow magma crystallization depths, whereas compressional tectonics are associated with deeper crystallization depths. This implies that variations in crystallization depths can be used to track changes in Earth’s dominant tectonic regimes through time. We therefore developed a new “pressure of crystallization” proxy based on the variation of the 176Lu/177Hf ratio in zircon. This ratio is controlled by zircon fractionation and residual garnet, and it can be used to monitor the evolution of a crystallizing magma ascending within the crust. The secular evolution of the 176Lu/177Hf ratio in zircon is characterized by cyclical oscillations that are broadly in tune with the δ18O record in zircon and with periods of continental collision and supercontinent amalgamation. The apparent mean depth of crystallization of zircon-bearing igneous rocks has decreased with time over the last ∼3.0 b.y. This can be linked to shallowing of the primary crystallization depths and/ or to the effect of time-integrated erosion in the geologic record. Prior to ca. 3.0 Ga, crystallization depth maxima and oscillations in apparent depth are less clear, perhaps suggesting that the nature of tectonic interactions was different in the Mesoarchean and earlier. The Bushveld Complex of South Africa is underlain by a fine-grained sill complex which most workers interpret to represent the quenched parent magmas to the intrusion. The sills have unusually high Pt contents (up to ~ 25 ppb) and Pt/Pd ratios (average 1.50) exceeding those in most other mantle magmas globally. Unusually high Pt/Pd is also found in many Bushveld cumulates. Understanding the origin of the high Pt/Pd is important for exploration, in view of the contrasting monetary value of the metals, but also for unravelling the petrogenesis of the intrusion. Here, we review existing platinum-group element (PGE) data and present the first radiogenic W isotope data on a Bushveld rock, to evaluate a range of potential models, including PGE fractionation prior to final magma emplacement and within the Bushveld magma chamber, magma derivation from the sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM), contamination of Bushveld magma with Pt-rich continental crust, and a meteoritic component in the mantle source to the magmas or in the crust with which the magmas interacted. We identify three key processes causing fractionation of metals prior to final magma emplacement and within the Bushveld chamber, namely crystallisation of Pt alloys, partial melting of cumulus sulfides triggered by flux of volatiles followed by sulfide melt percolation, and mobilisation of PGE by percolation of volatiles through the cumulate pile. The currently available W and Ru isotope data are inconsistent with derivation of the Bushveld magmas from mantle or crustal sources containing an enhanced meteoritic component relative to normal post-Hadean mantle. Abstract—The effect of sulfide sulfur on the crystallization of ultramafic–mafic–intermediate magmatic systems is considered in order to assess its scale and direction during the crystallization of rock-forming phases. The study carried out a theoretical analysis of the effect of sulfur on the activity of the components of the silicate melt according to the Korzhinskii's principle of acid–base interaction. To test the theoretical constructions, published experimental data analyzed to select data allowing a direct comparison of sulfur-saturated and sulfur-free runs. Despite the very limited number of such experiments, they all fit well with theoretically predicted trends. It has been established that the addition of sulfur to the system moderately reduces the liquidus temperature of rock-forming minerals within 20–30°C, and significantly affects their composition. In particular, chrome spinel is enriched in chromium by 10–12 mol % and complementary depleted in aluminum. The composition of plagioclase is enriched in the anorthite component by 3 mol % in dacites and 8 mol % in andesites; this effect was not established in basalts, but its strengthening can be expected. Olivine and orthopyroxene demonstrate an insignificant increase in magnesian content, but the field of their coexistence is significantly reduced in favor of orthopyroxene, which should inevitably lead to a change in their cotectic and peritectic proportions. Natural observations that can be interpreted as the result of the sulfur effect are taken from publications. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that sulfur significantly affects the crystallization of silicate magmas. It follows that the petrological dependences calibrated for sulfur-free experiments should be applied with caution to the interpretation of sulfur-bearing systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New experiments on the strongly peraluminous, Li-, P- and F-rich Beauvoir granite (Massif Central, France) provide a basis for understanding crystallization and chemical fractionation in Variscan rare metal magmas. Crystallization experiments were performed on two natural granite compositions under H2O-saturated conditions at 100, 200, and 300 MPa, from 540°C to 700°C and between ~NNO + 3 and NNO-1.4. Experimental charges were examined by SEM and their products (glasses and crystals) analyzed for major elements by EMPA. Trace element concentrations in selected glasses were determined by LA ICP-MS. Despite experimental durations commonly exceeding 1000 h and some up to 4000 h, kinetic problems were encountered in particular in the 100 MPa charges whereas, at 200 and 300 MPa, results consistent with previous melting experiments were obtained. Beauvoir melts crystallize quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar and mica as major phases. At NNO-1.4, mica is a biotite, whereas it is a Li-mica between ~NNO+3 and NNO-1. Apatite, Fe-Ti oxides, either hematite or magnetite, topaz, amblygonite, cassiterite and columbite-tantalite appear as accessory phases between ~NNO + 3 and NNO + 1. Experimental plagioclases are albitic (An <4.5 mol%) and more Ca and K-rich than natural albites in the granite whereas experimental K-feldspars are more sodic (Ab <45 mol%) than the natural crystals. The less evolved starting melt crystallized Li phengites whereas the most evolved yielded Li-, F-rich micas near the polylithionite-zinnwaldite series, similar to natural micas in the granite. Equilibrium crystallization increases A/CNK, F and P and concentrates Li, Be, B, Rb, Cs, W, U in the melt. Nb and Ta are also enriched, their behavior being controlled by the solubility of columbite-tantalite in the melt. Other elements are either unchanged (Mn, Zn, Ti) or depleted (Sr, Pb) during magmatic fractionation. Sn is concentrated in Li-mica and hematite, and it behaves compatibly at high fO2. Beauvoir melts crystallize at very low temperatures, below 670°C for the two compositions studied and solidus temperatures, determined from previous melting experiments and confirmed by the new crystallization experiments, are near 550°C. The experiments demonstrate that most of the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics that make the Beauvoir granite distinctive result from magmatic rather than hydrothermal post-magmatic processes. Albitic plagioclase, Li-mica, topaz, and amblygonite are of magmatic origin. Glass major element compositions suggest that the two granite samples represent crystallized liquids. Trace element fractionations for most elements at Beauvoir can be accounted for by magmatic crystallization–differentiation processes. Implications for the mineralogy, fO2, volatile concentrations, crystallization and conditions of emplacement, fractionation mechanisms and origin of the Beauvoir granite are discussed. Accretion of terrestrial planets involved partial or global melting events such as magma oceans or magma ponds. Mars experienced large-scale differentiation very early in its history, as shown by its 146Sm-142Nd and 182Hf-182W record. The broad variations in ε142Nd and ε142W of SNC meteorites highlight the presence of mantle sources that must have remained isolated, at least partly, after the crystallization of a global magma ocean. In this study, we have investigated whether the crystallization of the martian magma ocean could have generated mantle reservoirs characterized by different silicon isotope signatures, as the fractionation of Si isotopes between minerals and melts is known to depend on pressure. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate whether there were any relationships between magma ocean crystallisation and possible variations in the Si isotope record of SNC meteorites. High resolution silicon isotope measurements were performed on twelve meteorites from the Shergottite, Nakhlite and Chassignite groups using a Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS in dry plasma mode. The δ30Si values are in good agreement with previous studies but display a narrower range of variations with a mean value at −0.46 ‰ ± 0.07 (2SD). A magma ocean crystallization model shows that the range of δ30Si in SNCs is consistent with that generated by magma ocean crystallisation. In particular, there is a correlation between calculated 147Sm/144Nd for the moderately depleted mantle sources with δ30Si values; this correlation is consistent with the crystallization model if one includes trapped melt in the cumulates. In contrast, enriched shergottites displayed a very homogenous composition in Sm/Nd ratios, despite significant variability in δ30Si. This observation could be related to either fluid-rock interactions or redox effect during magma differentiation. The evolution of Earth's atmospheric O 2 levels on long timescales is modulated in part by the composition of magmatic gases, specifically their oxidation state and speciation. Here, we examine how magma differentiation affects the oxygen fugacity and composition of magmatic gases. Variations in temperature, pressure, composition, and redox conditions of evolving magmatic systems result in complexities, which have not been fully treated previously. Taking all these variables into account, we develop a multipronged approach to a comprehensive understanding on the role of magmatic gases on atmospheric oxygenation. This includes a compilation of petrological observations on the redox systematics of mid-ocean ridge basalts, a geochemical model for magma crystallization in oxygen-closed systems with variable initial redox conditions, and a thermodynamic framework for gas–melt systems with multi-component C-H-O-S volatiles. By considering magmatic differentiation at variable depths, we show that magma crystallization progressively changes the redox state of residual melts and coexisting gases due to differences in iron speciation between the melt and cumulate minerals. In thick crusts, high pressures of magma differentiation suppress magnetite saturation but promote garnet crystallization, increasing magmatic oxygen fugacity by ∼4–8 orders of magnitude and thereby resulting in oxidized gases. In thin crusts, the prevalence of magnetite prevents significant oxidation of the magma, yielding reduced gas emission. Hence, magmatic gases from thick crusts are much less effective O 2 sinks, which does not appear to be affected by gas decompressional transport or polybaric degassing from the deep crustal magmatic zone to the atmosphere. Depending on how crustal thickness during active magmatism varies with time, magmatic gases may play an important role in modulating atmospheric O 2 levels on million-year timescales. Rapid growth of continental crust in the late Archean appears to have been associated with the first evidence for significant crustal thickening during magmatism. Similar to the other areas of the Late Cenozoic volcanic province of Central Asia, the Udokan volcanic plateau (UVP) was formed in the time span between the Middle Miocene and the Pleistocene. Its rocks are highly alkaline and vary from alkaline picrobasalts and basanites to alkaline trachytes. The compositional variations of the rocks were controlled by two differentiation trends, which corresponded to different generation conditions of the parental magmas. The rocks with low SiO2 contents (<45 wt %) were formed by melts of low degrees of melting, whose melts were derived under elevated pressures and temperatures. The formation of the rocks with 45–61 wt % SiO2 was associated with the differentiation of basalt melts, which were derived at shallower depths and at lower temperatures. The geochemical characteristics of the UVP basaltoids make them similar to OIB-type basalts. They are also close in Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic composition, corresponding to the parameters of the moderately depleted mantle, which is close to the composition of oceanic basalt sources corresponding to the mantle of deep mantle plumes. The corresponding mantle component is present in the sources of other volcanic regions of the Late Cenozoic intraplate volcanic province in Central Asia, which indicates that the material of a lower mantle plume was involved in the formation of these regions. Large silicic eruptions can be preceded by small eruptions of different styles and volumes. The Holocene Llao Rock, Cleetwood, and climactic eruptions of Mt. Mazama, OR, USA, were sourced from the same magma and followed this pattern. The Llao Rock and Cleetwood eruptions are both relatively small, have pyroclasts with microlites and a wide range of vesicularities, and each consisted of an explosive phase followed by an effusive phase. The climactic eruption had no effusive phase and created highly vesicular pyroclasts with no microlites. We analyzed microlite crystallization using phase equilibria and decompression experiments. Comparing the results to the pyroclasts from the Llao Rock and Cleetwood eruptions, we find that the differences between the small and climactic eruptions are likely caused by different magma ascent dynamics. Our experiments show that plagioclase and pyroxene microlites crystallize only during decompressions that are most likely too slow to result in explosive eruptions. The Llao Rock magma likely stalled at shallow depths before continuing fast ascent, which allowed for microlite crystallization that might have also caused explosive eruptions. The Cleetwood magma likely took two separate ascent paths, a majority fraction that ascended quickly from high pressure without stalling and a minority fraction that stalled at shallow depths before continuing ascent along with the majority fraction. These ascent dynamics of the Llao Rock and Cleetwood magmas led to the creation of obsidian pyroclasts from sidewall sintering of fragmented majority-fraction ash. The climactic magma did not stall at shallow depths and instead ascended from depth quickly to the surface, creating the conditions necessary for caldera collapse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sanukitoid rocks make up a complete magmatic series with distinct geochemical characteristics of TTG suites and granitoids from modern magmatic arcs and are regarded as markers of the transition from typically Archean geodynamics to modern plate tectonics. Although most known sanukitoid suites formed during the Neoarchean and Mesoarchean, numerous papers have characterized Paleoproterozoic magmatic arc granitoid rocks showing affinity with the sanukitoid series. This work presents new data from field, lithogeochemistry, zircon U-Pb geochronology, and Sm-Nd and Sr isotopic studies on granodioritic granulites with sanukitoid signatures from the Juiz de Fora Complex (JFC), one of the Paleoproterozoic tectonic components of the Minas-Bahia Orogenic System (MBOS), southern São Francisco Paleocontinent (southeastern Brazil). These rocks crystallized at -2175 Ma and present values of εNdt between -4.0 and +0.5, TDM between 2.57 and 2.12 Ga, and 87Sr/86Sri between 0.6937 and 0.7137. We interpret these rocks as the result of crystallization of magmas from a hybrid mantle source extensively contaminated by crustal material during protracted subduction. In southeastern São Francisco Paleocontinent, the association of sanukitoid rocks with other mag- matic arc rocks points to a complex and prolonged Rhyacian accretionary system similar to modern plate tectonics. Indirect calculation of magma crystallization temperatures is an important subject for geologists to know the petrogenesis of igneous rocks. During magma evolution from generation to crystallization, several processes control the behavior of elements. In this research, we obtained two new methods for the thermometry of magma by using high field strength elements (HFSEs; Zr, Hf, Ce, Y, and Ti) abundances in igneous rocks. The first was T(K) = −15,993/(lnCZr + lnCHf − 21.668), where CZr and CHf are the bulk-rock Zr and Hf contents in ppm, and T is the temperature in Kelvin. This equation was specially formulated to address metaluminous to peraluminous rocks with M < 2 [(Na + K + 2Ca)/(Al × Si)] (cation ratio) and SiO2 > 63 wt.%. The second was T(K) = −20,914/(ln(CHf + CY + CCe) + (ln(CZr/TiO2) − 31.153). CHf, CY, and CCe, and CZr are Hf, Y, Ce, and Zr contents (ppm) in the whole rocks. The second equation is more suitable for peralkaline to alkaline rocks with M > 2 and a wide range of SiO2. Both equations are applicable for temperatures from 750 °C to 1400 °C. These two equations are simple and robust thermometry methods and predict similar values in the range of TZr thermometry, which has previously been suggested for magma crystallization temperature. Volatile-bearing minerals, such as apatite, Ca 5 (PO 4) 3 (OH,F,Cl), can record changes in dissolved magmatic volatile species during differentiation and, unlike melt inclusions, are sensitive to the presence of an exsolved fluid phase. Populations of apatite crystals from an individual sample can therefore be used to define the progressive volatile evolution of melt ± fluid during magma differentiation. Despite the importance of fluid chemistry in mineralisation processes, this approach remains relatively underdeveloped for porphyry mineralisation scenarios. Here, we present a model, including a standalone MATLAB app, for melt + apatite ± fluid fractionation that incorporates non-ideal, temperature-dependent K D s for OH-Cl-F exchange and permits an analysis of uncertainty arising from non-unique parameter combinations. We apply the model to apatite from the Fe-Cu-Au Corrocohuayco porphyry-skarn system and analyse differences in volatile saturation state and fluid salinity between different units. We find that there is little difference in the overall fluid salinity, and thus the fluid copper loads, but that the more primitive unit (i.e. the gabbrodiorites) reached fluid saturation much later (after around 50% crystallisation) than the more evolved units, implying that the melt volatile concentration recorded by the apatites in the gabbrodiorites is not representative of the initial magma volatile budget. Elucidating the origin, composition and physical properties of primary kimberlite melts is crucial to our understanding of their source, petrogenesis, ascent mechanisms and ultimately the origin of diamonds. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of olivine, which is one of the most abundant minerals in kimberlites with xenocrystic, metamorphic (mantle) and magmatic origins. Olivine is one of the earliest minerals to crystallise in kimberlite magmas, and the presence of ubiquitous zoning (e.g. cores, internal zones, transitional zones, rims, rinds, outmost rinds) and different generations (i.e. primary, pseudosecondary and secondary) of crystal/melt/fluid inclusions in euhedral olivine grains has been shown to provide fundamental insights into the composition and evolution of kimberlite melts. In this contribution, we review and evaluate the following: (1) the widely accepted notion that kimberlite olivine has two distinct origins—xenocrystic and magmatic. We present detailed electron microprobeX-ray element maps of well-preserved and zoned euhedral olivine microcrysts from the Koala and Mark (Lac de Gras, Canada) and Udachnaya-East (Siberia, Russia) kimberlites to show that the cores of olivine occasionally adopt euhedral shapes, which is commonly defined by the distribution of Ni. We present a scenario in which mantle olivine was recrystallised by the early (or proto-) kimberlite melt/fluid infiltrating through the lithospheric mantle to form euhedral 'pyrocrysts' (i.e. olivine that formed via re-crystallisation in the mantle in the presence of a melt), which in turn become cores for the subsequent crystallisation of magmatic olivine during kimberlite magma ascent and emplacement. (2) The evolution of ideas using different geochemical, petrological, experimental and melt inclusion approaches to constrain the composition of the primary/parental kimberlite melt. Based on our assessment of available data, in particular using melt inclusions, we propose that kimberlites originated from melts that were initially Si-poor, and Na-K-F-Cl-P-S-bearing and Ca-Mg-carbonate-rich. With this model composition for the primary/parental kimberlite melt considered, we emphasise the implications for the evolution of olivine and its role in the kimberlite petrogenesis. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive model outlining the key stages involved in the petrogenesis of kimberlites, ranging from the generation of the proto kimberlite melt in the mantle, its interaction with mantle silicates during ascent, the role of liquid immiscibility in driving magma differentiation and CO2 degassing and its emplacement and modification in the crust. The majority of basaltic magmas stall in the Earth's crust as a result of the rheological evolution caused by crystallization during transport. However, the relationships between crystallinity, rheology and eruptibility remain uncertain because it is difficult to observe dynamic magma crystallization in real time. Here, we present in-situ 4D data for crystal growth kinetics and the textural evolution of pyroxene during crystallization of trachybasaltic magmas in high-temperature experiments under water-saturated conditions at crustal pressures. We observe dendritic growth of pyroxene on initially euhedral cores, and a surprisingly rapid increase in crystal fraction and aspect ratio at undercooling ≥30 °C. Rapid dendritic crystallization favours a rheological transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian behaviour within minutes. We use a numerical model to quantify the impact of rapid dendritic crystallization on basaltic dike propagation, and demonstrate its dramatic effect on magma mobility and eruptibility. Our results provide insights into the processes that control whether intrusions lead to eruption or not. In situ 4D experiments at high temperature and moderate pressure reveal that rapid dendritic crystallization in hydrous basaltic magmas promotes a rheological transition within minutes, controlling magma mobility within the Earth's crust. We developed a model of feldspar nucleation delay during decompression in water-saturated rhyolite based on classical nucleation theory (CNT). With the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters proposed in this study, the model agrees with the experimental results of this study to within a factor of two. To account for the variety of conditions encountered by magma during ascent, we propose expanding the model, developed in this study for isothermal decompression, to a wider range of pressures and temperatures (i.e. non-isothermal conditions). We present new measurements of feldspar growth rates during decompression in water-saturated rhyolite, emphasizing the importance of accurately calculating the nucleation delay in order to estimate growth rates. Using these data, we propose a method for estimating the ascent rate of water-saturated rhyolite based on the nucleation delay of feldspar microlites. The findings of this study hold the promise of a better understanding of volcanic timescales during magma ascent in the conduit, as well as the possibility of extending our model to more complicated scenarios with changing pressure and temperature. This study presents the results of high pressure and temperature experiments to investigate the mineral–melt trace element partitioning behaviour for minerals predicted to have formed during the crystallisation of the Lunar Magma Ocean (LMO). The focus of this work has been particularly on determining partition coefficients for parent–daughter pairs of radiogenic elements, for LMO-relevant temperatures, pressures and compositions. The new experimental data are compared with previous studies for the same minerals and elements in order to establish best estimates for the partition coefficient of each element for evolving compositions of minerals as predicted in recent studies modelling LMO crystallisation. These estimates are used to calculate evolving parent–daughter ratios in the LMO residual melt and crystallising minerals for the four main long-lived radiogenic isotope systems that have been studied in lunar samples (Rb–Sr, Sm–Nd, Lu–Hf and U–Pb). The calculated 87Rb/86Sr, 147Sm/144Nd, and 176Lu/177Hf ratios are consistent with predictions for the mantle sources of lunar basalts and evolved lithologies. In contrast, it is difficult to explain the wide range of 238U/204Pb source ratios predicted from the Pb isotopic compositions of basaltic lunar samples. Potential explanations for this observation are discussed, with the conclusion that the Moon most likely experienced a significant loss of volatiles (including Pb), towards the end of LMO crystallisation, resulting in the dramatic U–Pb fractionation evidenced by recent sample analyses. Petrological and geochemical features of gabbros and fine-grained mafic rocks (mafic microgranular enclaves; MMEs) in the Inagawa Granite of the Ryoke Plutonic Complex were investigated to assess the interactions between coexisting mafic and silicic magmas, and the petrogenetic relationships between the MMEs and surrounding gabbros. The MMEs exhibit mingling textures that imply the coexistence of mafic and silicic magmas that did not undergo complete mixing, but the geochemical compositions of the MMEs require substantial hybridization and homogenization. The gabbroic rocks exhibit disequilibrium textures and mineral compositions, such as quartz–hornblende ocellar textures and patchy plagioclase crystals with bimodal anorthite contents. These textures and compositions record an abrupt decrease in crystallization temperature and mechanical mixing between crystallizing gabbroic mush and silicic (granitic) melt. Geochemical variations of the gabbroic rocks can be explained by hybridization and fractional crystallization (HFC) processes between crystallizing gabbroic mush and granitic melt. Extrapolation of the mixing trend to a basaltic composition suggests that the primitive mafic end-member was a low-K basaltic magma. Given that HFC yields magnesian andesite by the addition of a small amount of silicic melt to a primitive mafic end-member, the compositional modification of mafic magmas by magma mixing might be an essential process in the formation of andesitic magma in arc crust. Volcanic rocks commonly display complex textures acquired both in the magma reservoir and during ascent to the surface. While variations in mineral compositions, sizes and number densities are routinely analysed to reconstruct pre-eruptive magmatic histories, crystal shapes are often assumed to be constant, despite experimental evidence for the sensitivity of crystal habit to magmatic conditions. Here, we develop a new program (ShapeCalc) to calculate 3D shapes from 2D crystal intersection data and apply it to study variations of crystal shape with size for plagioclase microlites (l < 100 µm) in intermediate volcanic rocks. The smallest crystals tend to exhibit prismatic 3D shapes, whereas larger crystals (l > 5–10 µm) show progressively more tabular habits. Crystal growth modelling and experimental constraints indicate that this trend reflects shape evolution during plagioclase growth, with initial growth as prismatic rods and subsequent preferential overgrowth of the intermediate dimension to form tabular shapes. Because overgrowth of very small crystals can strongly affect the external morphology, plagioclase microlite shapes are dependent on the available growth volume per crystal, which decreases during decompression-driven crystallisation as crystal number density increases. Our proposed growth model suggests that the range of crystal shapes developed in a magma is controlled by the temporal evolution of undercooling and total crystal numbers, i.e., distinct cooling/decompression paths. For example, in cases of slow to moderate magma ascent rates and quasi-continuous nucleation, early-formed crystals grow larger and develop tabular shapes, whereas late-stage nucleation produces smaller, prismatic crystals. In contrast, rapid magma ascent may suppress nucleation entirely or, if stalled at shallow depth, may produce a single nucleation burst associated with tabular crystal shapes. Eleven isobaric experimental series simulate the fractional crystallization of 1,150 km deep lunar magma ocean. Crystallization begins at 1,850°C with olivine (to 32 per cent solidified, pcs), followed at 1,600°C by olivine + opx ± Cr‐spinel (to 62 pcs), at 1,210°C cpx + plagioclase ± olivine ± Ti‐spinel (to 97 pcs) and at 1,060°C quartz + cpx + plagioclase + Ti‐spinel, leaving 1.8 wt% residual magma that crystallizes minor K‐feldspar and apatite in addition. Melt compositions remain near 45 wt% SiO2, while FeO increases from 11 to 26 wt%, TiO2 peaks at 4 wt% at Ti‐spinel saturation. The available experimental liquid lines of descent yield an overall fractional crystallization sequence of olivine→opx→cpx + plagioclase→quartz→FeTi‐oxide. Plagioclase appears concomitantly with cpx, a result of the low magma ocean floor pressures (≤1 GPa) after 66%–76% of olivine + opx‐fractionation. A few wt% of FeTi‐oxides form mostly once the quartz + plagioclase + cpx‐cotectic is reached, cumulate densities remain ≤3,740 kg/m3. Scaled to a full magma ocean, plagioclase appears at 210–120 km depth, mainly as a function of bulk Al2O3. As buoyancy driven plagioclase‐cpx separation is likely limited, these depths may correspond to the primordial lunar crustal thickness. Allowing for complete plagioclase flotation to the quartz + plagioclase + cpx + FeTi‐oxide ± olivine cotectic yields 95–70 km primordial crust of anorthosite and quartz‐gabbro, far in excess of the 35–50 km observed. This supports an overturn of primordial layers, remelting of dense gabbroic cumulates in the harzburgitic cumulate mantle leading to further mixing and differentiation. We posit that such complex density induced convection led to a lunar marble cake mantle with primitive and fairly evolved reprocessed cumulates next to each other. A series of crystallization experiments have been carried out by using natural Emeishan Ti-rich hydrous basalts as starting materials at a pressure of 0.5 GPa and temperatures of 800–1 000 °C to constrain the origin of Fe−Ti−V oxide ore deposits. Our experimental results demonstrate that the sandwich- and trellis-type ilmenite lamellae in titanomagnetite of layered intrusions can be formed by the reaction of earlier crystallized ilmenite and the evolved parental magma. During evolution of parental basaltic magma, the Fe−Ti oxide should be composed of titanomagnetite+ilmenite in the earlier stage, but changed to titanomagnetite+titanomagnetite-ilmenite intergrowth±ilmenite at the later stage. Accordingly, the Panzhihua Fe−Ti oxide ores, which are mainly composed of titanomagnetite, should be formed earlier than the adjacent gabbro, in which titanomagnetite-ilmenite intergrowth is the major form of the Fe-Ti oxide. Based on a relevant geochronological U-Pb zircon dataset (n = 47) from a sample (PBL-109) of the Cerro Punta Blanca pluton (CPB), which is part of a calc-alkaline suite, we corroborate the development of protracted magmatic activity with three major crystallization events for this Permian magmatism: 278 ± 1, 283 ± 2, and 289 ± 2 Ma, which outcrop in the Cordón del Portillo, Cordillera Frontal (CF) of Argentina. These ages can be assigned to the lower section of the magmatic record of the Choiyoi magmatism (ca., 290-265 Ma), while the age of 289 Ma represents the oldest known age for the Choiyoi, indicating the start of this magmatism during the Artinskiense. Considering these geochronological data, we postulate the presence of a deep mush reservoir where protracted magmatic activity permitted the prolonged crystallization of antecrysts (ca. 283–289 Ma). Migration of the parental magma from the mush reservoir zone occurred near the time of emplacement and culminated in the formation of an ephemeral magma chamber at shallow levels, where zircon autocrysts crystallized (ca. 278 Ma). Age spectra reported within individual samples support the idea of massive magma migration when conditions were favorable (e.g., thermally matured crust). In this view, the studied "older" Choiyoi magmatism represents a continuous magmatic event lasting 11 Ma and corresponds to a single magmatic episode rather than different periods of magmatic activity and subsequent emplacements. A later alkali-calcic magmatic event is recorded at 265 ± 4 Ma from a sample of the Cerro Bayo pluton (MH-0113), which could represent the end of the lower section of the Choiyoi magmatism. Whole-rock Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr, and Lu-Hf data in zircon, along with ages reported for the studied igneous and inherited zircon from the CPB; together with isotopic data and ages from the detrital zircon found in the Carboniferous accretionary complex of Chile, indicate that the source of the Permian parental magma in this region was a heterogeneous continental crust mainly formed by Devonian and Carboniferous rocks, related probably to a magmatic arc. • Liquidus phase relations in a hydrous silicate system were determined at 24 GPa. • Melts are neutrally buoyant at 24 GPa before ∼98% crystallization of a magma ocean. • A transient melt-rich layer may form atop the lower mantle in a mushy magma ocean. The solidification of a deep magma ocean occurred early in Earth's history. Although the initial amount of H 2 O in Earth's magma ocean is predicted to be low (e.g., <3000 ppm), as an incompatible element it becomes highly enriched (e.g. >10 wt%) in the final few percent of crystallization. In order to understand how a hydrous magma ocean would crystallize at the top of the lower mantle, we determined liquidus phase relations in the MgO-FeO-CaO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -H 2 O system at 24 GPa. We find that the bridgmanite (brg) + stishovite (st) + melt and bridgmanite (brg) + ferropericlase (fp) + melt cotectic boundary curves trend to Mg-rich melt compositions with decreasing temperature and extend to very high H 2 O contents (∼80 mol% H 2 O). The brg+st+melt curve is a subtraction curve at < ∼18 mol% H 2 O and a reaction curve at higher H 2 O contents, whereas the brg+fp+melt is a subtraction curve throughout its length. The density of melts along the two cotectics leads to neutral buoyancy with respect to shallow lower mantle and transition zone minerals at H 2 O contents up to ∼25 mol%. A transient melt-rich layer can form at the top of the lower mantle during late-stage crystallization in a mushy magma ocean when melt percolation dominates. The petrogenesis of intermediate-silicic rocks with high Sr/Y ratios that are closely associated with porphyry Cu-Au mineralization and TTGs remains uncertain. This study presents new geochronological and geochemical data for high Sr/Y granodiorites and associated mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) from the Late Devonian–early Carboniferous Suanjingzi batholith in the Beishan orogen, NW China. The MMEs, dioritic and fine-grained, share mineral assemblages with their hosts but contain more amphibole. Similarities in ages and Sr-Nd-O isotopes between the MMEs and their hosts indicate that they share a common magma source. Our geochemical studies and quantitative modeling imply that upper crustal fractional crystallization of water-rich magma, represented by the associated MMEs, played a crucial role in forming the Late Devonian–early Carboniferous high Sr/Y rocks in central Beishan. High H 2 O contents promote amphibole crystallization and delay plagioclase appearance, giving rise to higher Sr and lower Y contents in evolved magma. Additionally, titanite fractionation can contribute to high Sr/Y ratios by decreasing Y contents. The MMEs, the best available proxy for the parental magma, originated from the partial melting of a mantle wedge metasomatized by subduction fluids. This study emphasizes the significance of upper crustal fractional crystallization of water-rich magma in forming high Sr/Y rocks. The possible increment caused by amphibole-dominated fractionation within the upper crustal level should be considered when employing Sr/Y ratios to quantify crustal thickness. Cathodoluminescence (CL) characterization combined with titanium concentration of quartz crystals in granite is a prevalent tool for elucidating the crystal growth of quartz in granitic magmas. The CL pattern yields to the internal structure, and the titanium concentration allows crystallization temperature determination based on TitaniQ geothermometry. Using two approaches, 1) observations of quartz crystals using thin sections and 2) observations based on multiple sections of separated quartz, we identified the overall characteristics of quartz crystals within a magma chamber and the 3D internal structure and growth characteristics of quartz grains. Thin section observations allow for the characterization of quartz containing zircon inclusions, indicating that zircon crystallization was followed by quartz crystallization; therefore, the onset of quartz crystallization occurred later than the onset of zircon crystallization in the cooling magma chamber. Such petrological restrictions permit allow for suitable geothermometer use and appropriate TiO 2 activity estimation, and thus, accurate quartz crystallization temperature determination. Observations using multiple sections of separated quartz crystals provide 3D internal structures and true onset parts within the grains. Progressive variation in local activities of TiO 2 in the concentration boundary layer at the growing quartz crystal interface in the magma chamber can be evaluated using a combination of the crystallization temperature and variations in titanium concentration within the grain, yielding a sequential crystallization model of oscillatory zoning quartz with local activities of TiO 2 in the cooling magma chamber. Water degassing plays a major role in magma transport and eruption by increasing liquidus temperatures, bubble and crystal volume fractions, and strongly affecting the viscosity of bulk magma. High spatial resolution textural analysis detailing the dynamics of bubble and crystal growth is key to unravelling the swift changes in magma crystallinity and gas content that affect the conditions of magma flow, fragmentation, and eruption. Ex situ observation of samples from a previous experimental study of magma degassing reveals that vesicles are surrounded by chemically heterogeneous residual glass that may be produced by newly formed minerals that are not observable at the microscale. Here, we present new in situ high-temperature (500–1100 °C), time-elapsed (every ~ 20 min at 200–800 °C, ~ 10 min at 900–1000 °C, and ~ 5 min at 1100 °C) observations of degassing of synthesised, hydrous (4.2 wt.% H2O) dacite glasses using scanning transmission electron microscopy at 0.4 nm resolution. The experiments reproduce degassing of a silicic melt by high-temperature heated stage mounted in the analytical instrument. We monitor the dynamics of nucleation and growth of nanobubbles that experience coalescence and formation of microbubbles and trigger the nucleation and growth of nanolites of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, Fe-Ti oxides, and quartz, at the expense of the residual melt. The ability to image degassing and crystallisation at nanoscale reveals a sequence of complex physical and chemical changes of the residual melt and shows that the kinetics of crystallisation in silicic melts is modulated by the melt's ability to exsolve fluids that help form mineral nuclei and nanolites. Finally, we highlight that the competition between gas retention and crystallisation is initiated at the nanoscale and may anticipate the role of microlites in controlling rates of magma ascent in a volcanic conduit and modulating the style of the consequent volcanic eruption. This work proposes a new method to probe the hidden magmatic evolution of quiescent Andean volcanoes from the Pb isotope composition of gases. The method is based on an assimilation-fractional crystallisation-degassing model linking the Pb isotope composition of gases with the SiO2 content of their magmatic source. The model is applied to El Misti volcano that threatens Arequipa, the second most densely populated city of Peru. Gas condensates and Pb-rich solid deposits (PbS, PbCl2, PbSO4) collected in 2018 in the bottom of El Misti crater at 260–150°C fumarole vents were used to reconstruct the mean composition of degassing magmas (60.8–61.8 wt% SiO2). These compositions are slightly more evolved than the lavas from the last AD 1440–1470 eruption, suggesting either the secular differentiation of the main magma reservoir, or the contribution of more evolved magmas to volcanic gases. On the other hand, the slight but significant difference between the instantaneous composition recorded in gas condensates and the time-integrated composition recorded in solid deposits points to the degassing of less evolved magmas over the last decades. This trend is ascribed to a recent recharge of El Misti reservoir with hot mafic magmas, in agreement with the evolution of fumarolic deposit mineralogy in the last half a century. The Pb isotope composition of gas appears to be a promising tool for probing the hidden magmatic evolution of quiescent volcanoes where assimilation-fractional crystallisation operates. Magmas with matrix glass compositions ranging from basalt to dacite erupted from a series of 24 fissures in the first 2 weeks of the 2018 Lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) eruption of Kīlauea Volcano. Eruption styles ranged from low spattering and fountaining to strombolian activity. Major element trajectories in matrix glasses and melt inclusions hosted by olivine, pyroxene and plagioclase are consistent with variable amounts of fractional crystallization, with incompatible elements (e.g., Cl, F, and H2O) becoming enriched by 4–5 times as melt MgO contents evolve from 6 to 0.5 wt%. The high viscosity and high H2O contents (∼2 wt%) of the dacitic melts erupting at Fissure 17 account for the explosive Strombolian behavior exhibited by this fissure, in contrast to the low fountaining and spattering observed at fissures erupting basaltic to basaltic‐andesite melts. Saturation pressures calculated from melt inclusion CO2‐H2O contents indicate that the magma reservoir(s) supplying these fissures was located at ∼2–3 km depth, which is in agreement with the depth of a dacitic magma body intercepted during drilling in 2005 (∼2.5 km) and a seismically imaged low Vp/Vs anomaly (∼2 km depth). Nb/Y ratios in erupted products are similar to lavas erupted between 1955 and 1960, indicating that melts were stored and underwent variable amounts of crystallization in the LERZ for >60 years before being remobilized by a dike intrusion in 2018. We demonstrate that extensive fractional crystallization generates viscous and volatile‐rich magma with potential for hazardous explosive eruptions, which may be lurking undetected at many ocean island volcanoes. Plain Language Summary: During the first 2 weeks of the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai'i, a wide variety of magma compositions were erupted from 24 separate fissures. Of particular interest is the magma erupted at Fissure 17, which was much more explosive than nearby fissures, throwing large pieces of molten rock several 100 m into the air, causing a serious injury. The explosivity of volcanic eruptions is partially controlled by the viscosity of the magma (how easily it can flow), and partially by the amount of dissolved H2O and CO2 (which exsolve like bubbles in a carbonated beverage as the melt ascends to the surface). We show that melts erupted at Fissure 17 were significantly more viscous and H2O‐rich than the melts erupted more passively at nearby fissures. These two factors account for the explosive eruptive style of this fissure. Using the relationship between the amount of dissolved H2O and CO2 and pressure, we show that erupted magmas were stored at ∼2 km depth below the surface since at least 1955–1960 CE. This review highlights the rheological and phase proportions variation induced by cooling events from superliquidus temperature (melt) to subliquidus temperatures. It provides a comprehensive view of the rheological response of magmatic systems undergoing dynamic cooling and shear deformation. The two main parameters which are of importance to model the rheological properties of such crystallizing systems and which are simultaneously poorly investigated so far are crystallization and strain rates. The response to relatively high deformation rates results in shear thinning behavior in partly crystallized systems under variable shear rate and it should be considered in magmatic processes. Due to the sluggish crystallization of SiO2-rich melts, data are mainly available for mafic systems, which does not allow a general reappraisal. An attempt to model available literature data for less evolved systems in dynamic scenarios and a comparison withMELTS algorithm approach (thermodynamic equilibriumconditions) is provided. Since there are difficulties in comparing experimental data gained using different methodologies, we focus mainly on data obtained with the concentric cylinder technique. Understanding the origins of major and trace element variations and the isotopic character of granite samples in terms of sources and magmatic processes is, arguably, the core of granite petrology. It is central to attempts to place these rocks in the context of broader geologic processes and continent evolution. For the granites of the Lachlan and New England Fold Belts (LFB and NEFB) of Australia there has been great debate between competing petrogenetic models. The open-system view is that the isotopic variability and within-suite compositional trends can be accounted for by magma mixing, assimilation and fractional crystallisation (FC). In contrast, the restite unmixing model views the isotope compositions of diverse granites as a feature inherited from individual protoliths that underwent partial melting to produce magmas entraining varying proportions of residual material in a felsic melt. Reconciling all aspects of the geochemical data in a mixing model is contingent on a plausible fractionation regime to produce the observed consistently linear (or near-linear) trends on Harker diagrams; however, published FC models lack phase equilibria constraints on the liquidus assemblage and do not account for the likely changes in trace element partitioning across the modelled compositional range. The Magma Chamber Simulator (MCS) can be used to model fractional crystallisation alone (FC) or with assimilation (AFC), constraining phase equilibria and accounting for the thermal budget. Here, this tool was used to conduct a case study of the I-type Jindabyne Suite of granites from the LFB, testing whether thermodynamically feasible geochemical trends matching the observed linear variations can arise through FC (with or without assimilation of supracrustal material). The results of 112 MCS models show: (1) that major element liquid lines of descent (LLDs) may be sensibly linear over limited compositional ranges, (2) that the involvement of assimilation extends the range in which trends are relatively simple and near-linear, and (3) that, despite these observations, neither FC nor AFC are able to correctly reproduce the geochemical evolution of the I-type Jindabyne Suite granitoids as an LLD (contrary to existing models)—instead, these processes persistently produce curved and kinked trends. The output of these simulations were further refined to explore models in which: (1) crystal-bearing magmas evolve via FC or AFC (with chemical isolation assumed to be achieved through crystal zoning) and undergo varying degrees of melt-crystal segregation at different stages to produce the sample compositions, and (2) in situ crystallisation occurs via FC within the crystallisation zone, driving the evolution of a liquid resident magma, which the samples represent. These models are able to reproduce the Jindabyne Suite trends reasonably well. The modelling implies that FC, or some variant thereof, is a viable explanation for the linear trends in Jindabyne; however, tendency for grossly non-linear LLDs highlights that it should not be assumed that FC can generally explain linear trends in granites without careful modelling such as shown here. Crystallisation-driven differentiation is one fundamental mechanism proposed to control the compositional evolution of magmas. In this experimental study, we simulated polybaric fractional crystallisation of mantle-derived arc magmas. Various pressure–temperature trajectories were explored to cover a range of potential magma ascent paths and to investigate the role of decompression on phase equilibria and liquid lines of descent (LLD). Fractional crystallisation was approached in a step-wise manner by repetitively synthesising new starting materials chemically corresponding to liquids formed in previous runs. Experiments were performed at temperatures ranging from 1140 to 870 °C with 30 °C steps, and pressure was varied between 0.8 and 0.2 GPa with 0.2 GPa steps. For most fractionation paths, oxygen fugacity (fO2) was buffered close to the Ni-NiO equilibrium (NNO). An additional fractionation series was conducted at fO2 corresponding to the Re-ReO2 buffer (RRO ≈ NNO+2). High-pressure experiments (0.4–0.8 GPa) were run in piston cylinder apparatus while 0.2 GPa runs were conducted in externally heated pressure vessels. Resulting liquid lines of descent follow calc-alkaline differentiation trends where the onset of pronounced silica enrichment coincides with the saturation of amphibole and/or Fe–Ti–oxide. Both pressure and fO2 exert crucial control on the stability fields of olivine, pyroxene, amphibole, plagioclase, and Fe–Ti–oxide phases and on the differentiation behaviour of arc magmas. Key observations are a shift of the olivine–clinopyroxene cotectic towards more clinopyroxene-rich liquid composition, an expansion of the plagioclase stability field and a decrease of amphibole stability with decreasing pressure. Decompression-dominated ascent trajectories result in liquid lines of descent approaching the metaluminous compositional range observed for typical arc volcanic rocks, while differentiation trends obtained for cooling-dominated trajectories evolve to peraluminous compositions, similar to isobaric liquid lines of descent at elevated pressures. Experiments buffered at RRO provide a closer match with natural calc-alkaline differentiation trends compared to fO2 conditions close to NNO. We conclude that decompression-dominated fractionation at oxidising conditions represents one possible scenario for arc magma differentiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-Mg diorites with high Sr/Y ratios are commonly associated with metal mineralization. But their petrogenesis still remains controversial. Here we present a case study of the Early Cretaceous high-Mg dioritic intrusions (Fushan intrusive complex) in the Handan-Xingtai district, central North China Craton (NCC). Samples from the Fushan Complex (123 ± 1 Ma) have SiO2 of 53.3–62.6 wt%, relatively variable K2O of 0.5–3.6 wt%, and high Mg# values (44–63). They show enrichment in light rare earth elements and depletion in heavy rare earth elements and high field strength elements, with high Sr/Y ratios and insignificant Eu anomalies, similar to those of adakitic rocks. For the Sr-Nd isotopes, they have whole-rock initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios and εNd(t = 123 Ma) values ranging from 0.706564 to 0.707546 and from −16.1 to −12.8, respectively, which are distinct from those in the lower continental crust but similar to those in the contemporaneous mafic rocks in the study area. Because of these characteristics, together with their zircon δ18O values of 6.6 ‰ ± 0.4 ‰ , we suggest that the Fushan high-Mg dioritic complex was most likely formed by factional crystallization of mantle-derived basaltic magma. The high Sr/Y ratios could be achieved by the fractionation of amphibole crystals plus significant volumes of feldspars from a mafic magma. We suggest that late Mesozoic strong lithospheric extension and thinning, caused by the subduction of the paleo-Pacific slab in the east of the NCC, might have triggered the melting of the metasomatic lithospheric mantle to generate these intrusive complexes in the Handan-Xingtai district.
