Abstract

A literary criticism of the book "The Crying of Lot 49," by Thomas Pynchon, is presented. The author considers the genre of profanated romance and focuses on the romantic quest of the main protagonist Oedipus Maas. Emphasis is given to the character's acceptance of death as an integral part of life and is related to the theories of psychologist Sigmund Freud on the death instinct as a source of human motivation.
