We had previously revised the systematics of four species of Macrobrachium Spence Bate, 1868 from the Pacific coast of Mexico, including the Baja California Peninsula (BCP): M. americanum Spence Bate, 1868 , M. digueti (Bouvier, 1895), M. hobbsi Nates & Villalobos in Villalobos Hiriart & Nates Rodríguez, 1990 , and M. occidentale Holthuis, 1950. Genetic analyses of the mitochondrial markers 16S ribosomal RNA (16S) and cytochrome oxidase I (COI) of individuals of these morphological species from BCP have shown that, even facing the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortés) as an apparent marine ecological barrier, they are conspecific to their respective genetic lineages (species) found from the Pacific slope of mainland Mexico. We discuss the systematics of the fifth species of Macrobrachium from the Mexican Pacific slope, M. tenellum (Smith, 1871) to test the hypothesis that individuals of the putative M. tenellum from BCP belong to the same species from the Pacific slope of mainland Mexico. We revised the morphological characters of taxonomic importance using material obtained in the field and voucher material deposited in Mexican scientific collections, and performed molecular genetic analyses with newly generated fragments of the mitochondrial markers 16S and COI. We conclude, as in our previous studies on Macrobrachium species of the region, that the examined specimens of the putative M. tenellum from BCP belong to the same species found on the Pacific slope of mainland Mexico, and that oceanic dispersal is responsible for the distribution of the species of Macrobrachium in the peninsula rather than by vicariant events. The brine shrimp Artemia is one of the most studied animals in the world. A large part of the knowledge of this crustacean is based on cysts harvested from two main sources; the Great Salt Lake, UT (GSL), and the San Francisco Bay salterns, CA (SFB), USA. Artemia populations from these habitats are recognized to belong to a single zygogenetic species, Artemia franciscana Kellogg, 1906. However, the GSL Artemia has been in doubt for more than a century about the existence of parthenogenetic reproduction. By using morphological, reproductive, and molecular analyses, we report that commercial GSL cyst lots contained two different brine shrimp species; a parthenogenetic (60%) and a zygogenetic (A. franciscana) (40%). From this finding, at least three hypotheses can be drawn. The parthenogenetic Artemia is native of GSL, or it was introduced to GSL, or foreign parthenogenetic cysts were mixed with A. franciscana cysts and canned for commercial distribution. Researchers using brine shrimp cysts from GSL should therefore pay careful attention to the correct identity of the species under study. Cuitzeo is the second largest lake in México (ca. 425 km²). Indigenous people collect clam shrimp (locally known as ‘conchilla’) and sell them dry as pets' food; the income is important for the local economy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a clam shrimp fishery. Two conchilla species co-occur: Eocyzicus digueti (Richard) and Leptestheria compleximanus (Packard). They were restricted to the saline, soda-alkaline, and temporally astatic W and NW portions of the lake. E. digueti constituted 70% of the total clam shrimp abundance, and L. compleximanus the remainder. Populations were dominated by juveniles, followed by females and males, with sex ratios (male:female) of 1:1.2 to 1:1.4. E. digueti was larger (3–11 mm) than L. compleximanus (3–8.5 mm), and males were larger than females in both species. There were highly significant correlations between carapace size and the number of growth lines and carapace size and the number of eggs. Although previously reported from México, both species are new records for Lake Cuitzeo and for Michoacán state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
