Background/objectives: Texture-modified diets (TMDs) may affect nutritional status and sarcopenia in patients after stroke. This study aimed to investigate the association of food texture levels consumed by patients after stroke with the prevalence of malnutrition and sarcopenia.Subjects/methods: This was a two-center cross-sectional study. A total of 443 patients aged ≥65 years undergoing post-stroke rehabilitation and with oral intake in rehabilitation wards in Shizuoka prefecture and Okinawa prefecture, Japan, were included in the analysis. Food textures were categorized according to the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) framework. Malnutrition was diagnosed according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition and sarcopenia was assess by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 criteria. The Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to examine the prevalence of malnutrition and sarcopenia by consumption of lower food texture levels.Results: Malnutrition and sarcopenia were diagnosed in 245 (55.3%) and 275 (62.1%) participants, respectively. Consumption of lower food texture levels was associated with a higher prevalence of malnutrition and severe malnutrition (P < 0.001 for both). In addition, consumption of lower food texture levels was associated with a higher prevalence of probable sarcopenia and sarcopenia (P < 0.001 for both). On multivariate analysis, significant associations were observed between IDDSI levels 5 (P < 0.001) and 4 (P = 0.009) and malnutrition, and between IDDSI levels 6 (P = 0.015), 5 (P = 0.033), and 4 (P = 0.015) and sarcopenia.Conclusions: In patients with stroke, consumption of lower food texture levels categorized by the IDDSI framework was associated with a higher prevalence of malnutrition and sarcopenia. Background: Diet-induced inflammation may be associated with sarcopenia; however, few reports have examined this relationship. Aim: To examine the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and sarcopenia in older adults who visited a frailty clinic in Japan. Methods: This cross-sectional study used outpatient data from the Frailty Registry Study. The DII is an index of diet-induced inflammation, and a dietary assessment was performed using a brief self-administered diet history questionnaire to calculate the DII score. We classified DII scores by quartiles (Q1–Q4), and sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 consensus. Logistic regression analyses for sarcopenia were performed. Age, sex, comorbidities, and physical activity were entered as confounding factors (Model 1) and Models 2, 3, and 4 with BMI, protein intake, and energy intake added to Model 1. Results: We included 304 patients in the analysis (mean age, 77.6 ± 6.3 years; female, 67.4%). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 14.5%. Logistic regression analyses showed that DII scores were significantly associated with sarcopenia in Model 1 and 2 (Model 1, reference: Q1, Q4: OR 3.10, P = 0.020; Model 2, Q4: OR 3.40, P = 0,022) but not in Model 3 and 4. Discussion: Diet-induced inflammation is associated with a higher likelihood of sarcopenia; however, this association disappeared after confounding for protein and energy intake. Background: Osteosarcopenia is a newly described, aging-associated condition. Social frailty is an important condition whose prevalence may have risen by physical distancing during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. However, the relationship between these two remains unclear. Aims: To examine the association between osteosarcopenia and social frailty. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using data from outpatients visiting general geriatric hospital frailty clinics. Bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle mass were measured using dual X-ray absorptiometry. Osteoporosis was defined as a BMD of < 70% of the young adult mean, according to the Japan Osteoporosis Society. Sarcopenia was diagnosed as per the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 recommendation. Osteosarcopenia was defined as the co-existence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia. We defined social frailty using a questionnaire comprising four items: general resources, social resources, social behavior, and basic social needs. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed with social frailty status and osteosarcopenia as the dependent and independent variables, respectively. Results: We included 495 patients (mean age = 76.5 ± 7.2 years) in the analysis; of these, 58.2% were robust and 17.2%, 13.5%, and 11.1% had osteoporosis alone, sarcopenia alone, and osteosarcopenia, respectively. Social frailty prevalence increased stepwise from 8.0% in robust patients to 11.8%, 17.9%, and 29.1% among those with osteoporosis alone, sarcopenia alone, and osteosarcopenia, respectively (P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that only osteosarcopenia was significantly associated with social frailty (pooled odds ratio: 2.117; 95% confidence interval: 1.104–4.213). Objectives: According to the recently proposed diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic dysphagia, sarcopenic dysphagia can be classified as probable or possible based on tongue pressure. However, it is unclear whether patients with probable and possible sarcopenic dysphagia have different characteristics. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether patients with possible and probable sarcopenic dysphagia have different clinical characteristics. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: A rehabilitation hospital. PARTICIPANTS: In total, 129 patients aged ≥65 years with sarcopenic dysphagia were included. Methods: A tongue pressure of <20 kPa was indicative of probable sarcopenic dysphagia, and a tongue pressure of ≥20 kPa was indicative of possible sarcopenic dysphagia. Kuchi-Kara Taberu (KT) index scores were compared between the probable or possible sarcopenic dysphagia groups. Results: According to the tongue pressure, 76 and 53 patients were classified into the probable and possible sarcopenic dysphagia groups, respectively. In multiple linear regression analysis, the presence of probable sarcopenic dysphagia was independently associated with the total KT index score (standardized coefficient: −0.313, regression coefficient: −4.500, 95% confidence interval [CI], −6.920 to −2.080, P < 0.001). The presence of probable sarcopenic dysphagia was independently associated with some subitems of the KT index (willingness to eat, cognitive function while eating, oral preparatory and propulsive phase, severity of pharyngeal dysphagia, eating behavior, and daily living activities). Conclusions: Patients with probable sarcopenic dysphagia were characterized by poor overall eating-related conditions, especially poor swallowing ability, ability to perform activities of daily living, and nutritional status. This study examined the diagnostic concordance and characteristics of the oral frailty five-item checklist (OF-5) and oral hypofunction (OHF). In this extensive cross-sectional study, older adults were enrolled at a research hospital frailty clinic between July 2021 and July 2023. The diagnosis of OF-5 and OHF was conducted using the proposed assessment methods. The concordance rate of these criteria was determined by evaluating each patient and calculating the number of patients meeting each diagnosis's criteria. Patients who tested negative for the OF-5 and OHF criteria and those who met only one criterion were included in the OF-5 and OHF characteristic analysis. A total of 248 patients were included in the analysis (mean age 77.6 ± 6.8 years; 36.7 % men). Among the patients, 114 (46.0 %) and 116 (46.8 %) met the OF-5 and OHF criteria, respectively. Furthermore, 78 (31.5 %) participants met both the OF-5 and OHF criteria, whereas 96 (38.7 %) did not meet either criterion. Moreover, 36 (14.5 %) and 38 (15.3 %) patients tested exclusively positive for OF-5 and OHF, respectively. The OF-5-positive and OHF-negative group showed an older age, lower Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form score, and higher fall risk than the OF-5-negative and OHF-negative group. However, no significant differences were observed between the OF-5-negative and OHF-positive and OF-5-negative and OHF-negative groups. The concordance rate of OF-5 and OHF diagnoses was 70.2 %. Aim: The recently proposed Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria may accurately reflect the nutritional status of older adults because they use information such as reduced muscle mass and chronic and acute disease to diagnose malnutrition. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of malnutrition in older adults assessed by the GLIM and the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) diagnostic criteria for malnutrition (DCM) in post‐acute geriatric care. Methods: This cross‐sectional study included older patients admitted to rehabilitation care units. Malnutrition was evaluated using GLIM‐DCM and ESPEN‐DCM using a two‐step process (initial screening and subsequent steps). The prevalence and differences observed between GLIM‐DCM and ESPEN‐DCM were reported, and the determinants of each criterion were identified. Results: This study included 335 older patients (mean ± SD, age 80.0 ± 7.5 years; 54.0% women). The prevalence of older patients diagnosed with GLIM‐DCM and ESPEN‐DCM was 66.9% and 59.1%, respectively, and the agreement between ESPEN‐DCM and GLIM‐DCM was 80.9%. The results of multivariate analyses showed that all items of the phenotypic and etiologic criteria were independent determinants for GLIM‐DCM, whereas disease burden/inflammation (P = 0.996), included in the etiologic criteria of GLIM‐DCM, were not determinants of ESPEN‐DCM. Conclusion: This study reported the prevalence of malnutrition according to GLIM‐DCM and the differences in the characteristics of patients diagnosed with malnutrition based on GLIM‐DCM and those diagnosed based on ESPEN‐DCM in geriatric rehabilitation care units. Object: The SARC-F questionnaire is a sarcopenia screening tool. However, the validity of the SARC-F score ≥4 (SARC-F≥4) for the evaluation of sarcopenia in the hospital setting has not been investigated. This study investigated the validity of SARC-F≥4 as a screening tool for sarcopenia among hospitalized older adults. Design: Cross-sectional retrospective study. Setting: A university hospital. Participants: This study included older adult patients (age ≥65 years) who were hospitalized at, and subsequently discharged from, the hospital between April and September 2019 and underwent a nutritional assessment by the nutrition support team during their hospitalization. Measurements: SARC-F was recorded at the time of admission, and the criteria specified by the Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia in 2019 (AWGS 2019) were applied to diagnose sarcopenia and possible sarcopenia. Appendicular muscle mass was estimated through validated equations, and three different models were developed for sarcopenia diagnosis. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive/negative likelihood ratios were calculated to analyze the accuracy of the SARC-F≥4 for sarcopenia and possible sarcopenia. Receiver-operating characteristic analyses were conducted to calculate the area under the curve (AUC). Results: In total, 1,689 patients (mean age: 77.2±13 years; male: 54.4%) were analyzed, and 636 patients (37.7%) had SARC-F≥4. Patients with SARC-F≥4 had a statistically significant higher prevalence of AWGS 2019-defined sarcopenia than patients with SARC-F <4 in the models (65.4–78.9% vs 40.9–15.2%, p<0.001). The sensitivity, specificity, and positive/negative likelihood ratios of SARC-F≥4 for sarcopenia and possible sarcopenia were 49.1–51.3%, 73.9–81.2%, and 1.88–2.72/0.60–0.69 and 48.0%, 84.5%, and 3.11/0.62, respectively. The AUC for sarcopenia and possible sarcopenia were 0.644–0.695 and 0.708, respectively. The AUC of SARC-F for possible sarcopenia was equivalent to or larger than that for sarcopenia (DeLong test p=0.438, 0.088, and <0.001 vs the three models). Conclusions: SARC-F≥4 is suitable as a screening tool for sarcopenia in hospitalized older adults. Aim: The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) can predict nutritional risk. However, just a few studies have validated the optimal cut‐off value of GNRI for nutrition screening in older patients. Hence, this study aimed to determine the optimal value of GNRI to screen the risk of malnutrition among older patients. Methods: This retrospective cross‐sectional study was carried out with 5867 consecutive older adult patients who were admitted to an academic hospital in Japan. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were carried out to obtain the optimal cut‐off value of GNRI, and the results were compared against the Mini Nutritional Assessment – Short Form and Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool. The validation of the obtained cut‐off value was examined on the concordance rate of malnutrition diagnosis based on the European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism criteria. Results: The mean age of the patients was 76.0 ± 7.0 years. The optimal cut‐off value of GNRI for Mini Nutritional Assessment – Short Form ≤11 points was 95.92 (area under the curve 0.827 [0.817–0.838], P < 0.001), and that for Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool ≥1 point was 95.95 (area under the curve 0.788 [0.776–0.799], P < 0.001). By adapting GNRI <96 points as an initial screening cut‐off in the European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism‐defined malnutrition process, the concordance rates of comparisons were 98.5% and 98.5% for Mini Nutritional Assessment – Short Form‐based and MUST‐based diagnosis, respectively. Background Higher intake of fruits and vegetables is associated with reduced risk of specific types of cancer and of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the protective role of the vitamins contained in fruits and vegetables on CVD is controversial. This discrepancy can raise the question of the effects of antioxidants in vitamins on CVD. Recently, we reported that higher vegetable intake was significantly associated with the decreased DNA methylation level of ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), a gene associated with HDL-cholesterol metabolism. Objective We investigated whether ABCA1 DNA methylation mediates an effect of dietary vitamin intake on lipid profiles, an important risk factor for CVD, in a Japanese population. Methods A total of 225 individuals (108 men and 117 women) with no clinical history and no drug use for dyslipidemia participated in this cross-sectional study. We used the pyrosequencing method to measure the ABCA1 DNA methylation levels at 8 CpG sites, and we used mean DNA methylation level in statistical analysis. Dietary vitamin intake was assessed with the FFQ and adjusted for the residual method. Results In women, higher dietary vitamin intake [vitamin A, β-carotene, folic acid, vitamin C (VC), vitamin D, and vitamin E] was significantly associated with lower mean ABCA1 DNA methylation levels (P  = 0.004, 0.03, 0.005, 0.001, 0.03, and 0.04, respectively). In addition, in women, we found a significant inverse association between mean ABCA1 DNA methylation and HDL cholesterol (P  = 0.04) but not for other lipid indexes. Mediation analysis showed a significant indirect effect of VC intake on HDL cholesterol through ABCA1 DNA methylation level in women (P  = 0.04). Conclusions Although this study does not prove causality, the results suggest that ABCA1 DNA methylation mediates the protective effect of VC on HDL cholesterol in women, which could offer a novel biological mechanism in CVD prevention. Aim: Calf circumference, which is a known simple indicator of muscle mass, increases during edema. However, the extent to which edema increases calf circumference in older adults is unclear. Methods: This retrospective cross‐sectional study included patients aged ≥65 years whose nutritional status was assessed by nutrition support teams. Two different types of matching models in each sex were created according to the presence of edema on the right lower limb. All models were adjusted by age, body height, handgrip strength and performance status. Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on both reduced calf circumference and decline of handgrip strength. The prevalence of sarcopenia was estimated before and after adjustment for increment of calf circumference. Results: In total, 2101 patients were included. Multifactor matching models showed that the mean difference in calf circumference between pairs was 1.6 cm (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.1–2.1, P < 0.001) for women and 2.1 cm (95% CI 1.6–2.7, P < 0.001) for men. The propensity score matching model similarly showed a mean difference of 1.6 cm (95% CI 1.1–2.1, P < 0.001) for women and 2.0 cm (95% CI 1.5–2.6, P < 0.001) for men. The prevalence of sarcopenia before and after adjusting for an edema‐related increase in calf circumference was 42.6%/48.6% for women and 35.3%/38.5%–38.7% for men. Conclusions: Edema in the lower limb increased the calf circumference by approximately 2 cm. When using calf circumference to assess muscle mass in patients with edema, the increase in circumference should be subtracted from the baseline circumference for an accurate assessment. The article analyzes Japanese outpatients aged 65 years and above to investigate the ability of the QMCOO (Questionnaire for Medical Checkup of Old-Old) to identify physical frailty. It informs that the QMCOO, the standard procedure in the medical checkup of older Japanese adults in the latter stages of life, aims to evaluate the general health status of older adults. It concludes that the QMCOO had good screening ability for physical frailty among older Japanese outpatients.

Aim: The relationship between oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) and sarcopenia is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the prevalence of sarcopenia in older dental clinic outpatients and its relationship with OHRQoL and oral health status. Methods: This cross‐sectional study used data from consecutive dental clinic outpatients aged ≥65 years. The Oral Health Impact Profile‐14 was used for the evaluation of OHRQoL, and the Oral Health Assessment Tool was used to assess oral health status. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. Uni‐ and multivariable analyses were carried out to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and Oral Health Impact Profile‐14 and Oral Health Assessment Tool scores. Results: This study involved 279 patients (173 women, 106 men) with a mean age of 76 ± 7.5 years. The sarcopenia prevalence rate was 30.2%, and patients with sarcopenia had significantly poorer OHRQoL and oral health status than did patients without sarcopenia. Furthermore, sarcopenia was independently associated with Oral Health Impact Profile‐14 and Oral Health Assessment Tool scores even after adjusting for confounding factors, such as age, sex, nutritional status, activities of daily living, dysphagia, comorbidities, polypharmacy and clinical dental findings. Conclusions: Sarcopenia was associated with OHRQoL and oral health status in older dental clinic outpatients. The prevalence of sarcopenia in older outpatients visiting the dental clinic was relatively high. Aim: Older adults often present with several comorbidities, including sarcopenia. However, the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associations with other comorbidities in hospitalized older adults are unknown. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia, and its associations with other comorbidities in hospitalized older adults. Methods: The present cross-sectional study included 619 patients admitted to a geriatric hospital. The prevalence of comorbidities in the presence and absence of sarcopenia, nutritional status (according to body mass index and the Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form), and activities of daily living (according to the Barthel Index) were assessed. Sarcopenia was defined as skeletal muscle loss evaluated by both bioelectrical impedance and handgrip strength analyses. Results: Of the 619 participants (mean age 83.0 ± 8.2 years), 417 (67.4%) and 87 (14.1%) had definitive and possible sarcopenia, respectively. The prevalence rates of cognitive impairment and stroke were significantly higher in patients with definitive sarcopenia and those with possible sarcopenia than in those without sarcopenia (cognitive impairment 54.4%, 70.1% and 20.9%, respectively, P < 0.001; stroke 31.2%, 48.3% and 19.1%, respectively, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that cognitive impairment was independently associated with sarcopenia after adjusting for age, sex, the Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form score, Barthel Index and primary disease (adjusted odds ratio 1.98, 95% confidence interval 1.06–3.71; P = 0.032). Conclusions: Sarcopenia might be highly prevalent among hospitalized older adults. Furthermore, cognitive impairment might be an independent explanatory variable of sarcopenia. Objectives To verify the reliability and validity and develop an English version of an instrument (Kuchi-Kara Taberu Index ( KT Index)) to comprehensively assess and intervene in problems with eating and swallowing. Design Multicenter cross-sectional study. Setting Nursing homes. Participants Individuals aged 65 and older (mean age 88.3 ± 6.8; 80.0% female) who had lived in a nursing home for longer than 1 month (N = 115). Measurements The KT index consisted of 13 items: desire to eat, overall condition, respiratory condition, oral condition, cognitive function while eating, oral preparatory and propulsive phases, dysphagia severity, position and endurance while eating, eating, daily life, food intake level, food modification, and nutrition. Weighted kappa coefficients, Cronbach alpha, and Spearman rank correlation coefficients were determined. Results Weighted kappa values in the inter- and intrarater reliability tests ranged from 0.54 to 0.96 and 0.68 to 0.98, respectively. Cronbach alpha was 0.892. Spearman rank correlation coefficients (r) between the total KT index and external criteria were determined (Functional Oral Intake Scale, r = 0.790; Barthel Index, r = 0.830; Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form, r = 0.582; Cognitive Performance Scale, r = −0.673; all P < .001). Similar correlations were observed when some items related to each external criterion were removed from the total KT index. Translation-retranslation procedures were conducted to develop an English version of the KT index. Conclusion The study provided evidence of the reliability and validity of the KT index and developed an English version. The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019) proposed a simple assessment of sarcopenia called "possible sarcopenia" for the purpose of early detection and intervention of sarcopenia. The purpose of this study was to report the accuracy of possible sarcopenia against definitive sarcopenia and the characteristics of false-negative cases. This was a cross-sectional study using a research registry with outpatients aged ≥65 years who visited a frailty clinic at a geriatric hospital. The diagnosis of possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia was performed according to the AWGS 2019 criteria, using calf circumference (CC) for case-finding. The accuracy of the diagnosis of sarcopenia in participants with possible sarcopenia was evaluated by calculating sensitivity, specificity, and F-value. Of the 349 patients (mean age, 78.0±6.0 years; 63% women) analyzed, 86 (24.6%) revealed possible sarcopenia. Possible sarcopenia predicted sarcopenia with a sensitivity of 0.893 and 0.921, specificity of 0.990 and 0.870, and F-values of 0.926 and 0.714 for men and women, respectively. When either the grip strength test or 5-time chair stand test result was examined, the sensitivity of possible sarcopenia to predict sarcopenia decreased, whereas the specificity remained at 0.990–1.000 in men and 0.890–0.940 in women. An extremely decreased CC was identified as a significant characteristic of patients with sarcopenia not detected in the simplified assessment. This cross-sectional study enrolled consecutive patients with stroke, aged 65 years and older, admitted to a convalescent rehabilitation ward. Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the AWGS 2019 criteria. We drew a receiving operating characteristic curve to assess the ability of CC to predict sarcopenia diagnosis. Subsequently, we estimated the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F-value, and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of the considered cut-off values. We enrolled 256 patients (43 % women) (mean age, 76.6 ± 7.5 years). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 63.7 %. Among men who presented with CC < 34 cm (the AWGS-recommended cut-off value), sensitivity and specificity were 85 % and 66 %, respectively. Concurrently, estimates of accuracy, F-value, and MCC were the highest at cut-off value <34 cm. Among women, at <33 cm of the AWGS-recommended cut-off value, the sensitivity and specificity were 91 % and 28 %, respectively. At cut-off value <32 cm, sensitivity was maintained at 80 %, while specificity increased to 56 %; suggesting that this cut-off value might be a useful indicator for the case-finding of sarcopenia. This study aimed to clarify the association between texture-modified diets and poor appetite in older adults, as it is not fully understood. Cross-sectional study. We included 208 inpatients who were aged ≥65 years (mean age 78.9 ± 7.6 years, 57.7% female) and admitted to a rehabilitation unit with stroke, musculoskeletal disease, or hospital-associated deconditioning covered by the Japanese insurance system, between January 2019 and January 2020. Participants were divided into 2 groups according to their food texture level: International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) levels 3 to 5 for the texture-modified diet group and levels 6 and 7 for the normal diet group. Appetite was assessed using the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire for the Japanese elderly, and a score ≤14 was defined as poor appetite. The relationship between IDDSI levels and poor appetite was analyzed using the Cochrane-Armitage trend test. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between the consumption of texture-modified diets and poor appetite. Statistical significance was set at P <.05. The numbers of participants on modified diets according to the IDDSI framework were as follows: 4, 11, 41, 76, and 76 in levels 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, respectively. In total, 152 and 56 patients were classified into the regular diet group and texture-modified diet group, respectively. A significantly higher prevalence of poor appetite was observed with the consumption of texture-modified diets (P <.001 for trend). Logistic regression analysis showed that poor appetite was independently associated with the consumption of texture-modified diets (odds ratio 3.443, P =.011). These findings indicate that the consumption of texture-modified diets is associated with poor appetite. Further studies are required to verify whether a multimodal approach involving improvement in the appearance, taste, flavor, and nutrients of the food can improve poor appetite. Background and Objectives: The rates of sarcopenia and cachexia evaluations by different occupational groups at different settings are unclear. The objectives are to evaluate and compare the relative use of sarcopenia and cachexia evaluations among dietitians and associated healthcare professionals in a diverse range of settings.Methods and Study Design: Participants were 4,621 members from the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Nutrition. Settings included acute general wards, convalescent rehabilitation wards, long-term care wards, homecare service, and other settings. A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate assessments for sarcopenia and cachexia among dietitians and other professionals. Multiple comparisons based on Bonferroni method and logistic regression analysis were used.Results: 718 (15.5%) answered the questionnaire. Data from 683 valid questionnaires were analyzed. Muscle strength, muscle mass, physical function, and cachexia were assessed by 53.4%, 51.1%, 53.4%, and 17.4% of dietitians. At convalescent rehabilitation wards, these rates were 81.8%, 62.0%, 82.5%, and 14.0%. The use of muscle strength and physical function evaluations was significantly lower among dietitians than among physical therapists and occupational therapists. The use of muscle mass and cachexia evaluations was not significantly different among the occupations. The use of muscle mass and strength evaluations was significantly higher in convalescent rehabilitation wards than in acute general wards, long-term care wards and facilities, and other settings, but not in homecare services. Cachexia evaluations were not significantly different between all settings.Conclusions: Raising the awareness of cachexia and sarcopenia among dietitians is a key issue, which should be addressed. Osteosarcopenia and cognitive frailty are both risk factors for falls and fractures. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between osteosarcopenia and cognitive frailty. This was a cross-sectional secondary data analysis of the Frailty Registry Study with outpatients aged ≥65 years who visited a frailty clinic at a geriatric hospital. Osteoporosis was defined as a bone mineral density < 70% of the young adult mean. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria. Cognitive frailty was defined as the coexistence of physical frailty and mild cognitive impairment. Physical frailty was evaluated according to Japanese Cardiovascular Health Study criteria, whereas mild cognitive impairment was defined as a Mini-Mental State Examination score ≥ 24 points and a score ≤ 25 points on the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. We performed multivariable logistic regression analysis to investigate the association between osteosarcopenia and cognitive frailty. The data of 432 patients were analysed. The prevalence of osteosarcopenia and cognitive frailty was 10.2% and 20.8%, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed that osteosarcopenia was independently associated with cognitive frailty with a higher odds ratio than osteoporosis or sarcopenia alone. Lost points in visuospatial abilities/executive functions and orientation were significantly associated with osteosarcopenia. Combination of osteoporosis and sarcopenia is more likely to be associated with physical and cognitive decline than osteoporosis and sarcopenia alone.
