Background: The main purposes of the nursing profession are to protect and improve health and to prevent and heal diseases. It is crucial to investigate the factors that can influence nurses' ability to enhance their performance in their professional lives and conduct the nursing care process more qualitatively and effectively. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between emotional intelligence and compassionate communication in nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 140 nurses working in various units of the public hospital in Kilis, Turkey. Data were collected through a demographic information form, Emotional Intelligence Scale, and Compassionate Communication Scale. Results: It was determined that nurses' emotional intelligence and compassionate communication were above average. A significant association was found between nurses' emotional intelligence and compassionate communication (F = 16.08, P <.001) and emotional intelligence explains 10% of the variance in compassionate communication (R = 0.323, R 2 = 0.104). Conclusions: Emotional intelligence and compassionate communication should be taken into consideration so that nurses can recognize and understand patients' emotions, alleviate their hurt, and deliver delicate, kind, and compassionate care. Simple Summary: This pilot study aims to identify the physical, mental, social, psychological, and health needs encountered by cancer survivors in order to propose and facilitate appropriate and tailored responses. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first multidimensional studies investigating this topic in Italy. Data show that the quality of life of cancer survivors is affected by cancer and its treatment, reporting more frailties than the general population, especially those over 65 years old. These findings could help develop multidisciplinary planning of survivorship care for the transition of patients from oncological management to primary healthcare. Background: Understanding the specific needs of cancer survivors is essential for healthcare policy. In Italy, dedicated studies are lacking, so we aimed to investigate the physical, mental, social, and health difficulties encountered by these patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on breast or colorectal cancer survivors (people 5+ years free from it and its treatments) using an ad hoc survey including validated questionnaires (Grauer–Palombi, SF-36, PREDIMED). Participants were recruited within the Oncology Unit of the "Policlinico Tor Vergata", Italy. Results: A total of 62 patients (80.6% females; years range: 37–87) agreed to be interviewed. A profile of cancer survivors was drafted: an overaged person with multiple co-morbidities, not well-nourished, adhering to the Mediterranean diet, reporting critical conditions as for physical and functional status. The mean number of co-morbidities was 3.6 ± 2.4 SD, with a statistically significant difference between age groups (under and over 65). Compared to the general population, the sample showed more frailties, especially when >65. The risk of having multimorbidity (four or more co-morbidities) significantly increased in those over 65 (OR: 4.72; CI: 1.43–15.59). Conclusion: There is an urgent need for survivorship care planning for the patient-centered continuum of care. Background: Psychological distress can cause burnout, which affects mental and physical well‐being. It is important to identify factors associated with psychological distress and physical discomfort and how nurses deal with these problems. Aim: The aim was to investigate distress, burnout and coping among community nurses (CN) and hospital nurses (HN). Approach and Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, 409 nurses completed three questionnaires: Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and Ways of Coping (WOC). Findings: Participants younger than 40 demonstrated significantly more distress and burnout than those older than 40 years. Participants who had moderate and high distress on the PSS were significantly more at risk for experiencing personal, work‐related and patient‐related burnout. A significant positive correlation was found between distress and behavioural escape‐avoidance, cognitive escape‐avoidance and distancing. Significant positive correlations were also seen between all the subscales of the CBI and behavioural escape‐avoidance, cognitive escape‐avoidance and distancing. Positive significant correlation was also obtained between staff resources and distress and personal‐related and work‐related burnout. Negative correlation was demonstrated between staff resources and patient‐related burnout. Participants with longer work experience were less likely to report moderate or high distress, and those who scored higher on personal burnout and behavioural escape‐avoidance were more likely to have moderate or high distress. Conclusion: The results of this study call for increased attention to the younger generation in the nursing profession. The results also validate the need to investigate further the correlation between distress, burnout and coping and how these issues might influence each other among nurses working in the community and hospitals. Findings should be taken with precaution, they do not describe in detail what underlying factors contribute to distress and discomfort found in this study, they do, however, indicate certain coping strategies nurses use to deal with distress and burnout. Background: Considering that few studies have investigated the differences in clinical, laboratory, and imaging symptoms of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during different peaks of the disease in Iran, the present study compares the patients who were admitted to the COVID-19 departments of Imam Reza Hospital during the first, second, and third peaks of the disease. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data were collected by reviewing the files of patients with a definite diagnosis of COVID- 19 based on the RT-PCR test in Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad. The patients were divided into three groups based on the time of admission: The first peak from March 2020 to June 2020, the second peak from July to September 2020, and the third peak from October to December 2020. The variables evaluated in this study included demographic information, clinical signs and symptoms, and laboratory and radiological findings. Descriptive qualitative data were reported using frequency tables, while quantitative descriptive data were reported using measures of central tendency and dispersion. A comparison of qualitative data among the three peaks was conducted using the chi-square test, while for quantitative data, the ANOVA test was used followed by appropriate post-hoc tests. Results: A total of 561 patients with an average age of 58.90 ± 16.80 years were included in the study, of which 336 (59.9%) were male. Regarding underlying diseases, significant differences were found in age (P < 0.001), smoking (P < 0.001), diabetes (P = 0.003), high blood pressure (P < 0.001), asthma (P = 0.025), and ischemic heart disease (P < 0.001). For vital signs, significant differences were observed in heart rate (P < 0.001), respiration rate (P < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.010), and SPO2 (P < 0.001). In clinical characteristics, significant differences were found in fever (P < 0.001), nausea (P = 0.011), vomiting (P = 0.031), headache (P < 0.001), weakness (P < 0.001), and sore throat (P < 0.001). In laboratory characteristics, significant differences were observed in white blood cell (WBC) count (P = 0.024), neutrophil percentage (P < 0.001), lymphocyte percentage (P < 0.001), and C-reactive protein (CRP) (P = 0.001). The CT score values of the patients were significantly different between the three peaks. Patient mortality was significantly different across the three peaks. Less than 15% of hospitalized patients died in the first peak, while over 24% died in the second peak and nearly 40% of inpatients died in the third peak. In our study, the first and third surges and the second and third surges had different mortalities. Conclusions: The third and first peaks had the highest and lowest mortality rates, respectively. Underlying diseases and unstable vital signs were more common in the second and third peaks. Patients in the second peak had significantly higher CT scores compared to the other peaks. Background: Anaemia is a global public health issue that impacts individuals of all ages in both developed and developing countries. Anaemia is common in patients with diabetes mellitus; however, it is often undiagnosed and untreated. The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus admitting to a medical unit at National Hospital Kandy. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients admitted to a medical ward at National Hospital Kandy (NHK). They were assessed with a pre-tested, interviewer-administered, structured questionnaire using consecutive sampling method. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS 26. Results: Total 252 patients with diabetes were included. The prevalence of anaemia in patients with T2DM was 31.3%. The corresponding values for males and females were 34.2% and 65.8% respectively. Independent predictors for anaemia among diabetic patients were older age, female gender, poor glycemic control, diabetes duration > 5 years, diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, stage ≥ 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and usage of aspirin. These were significantly associated with the prevalence anemia among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender, age ≥ 65 years, diabetic duration > 5 years, poor glycaemic control, stage ≥ 3 CKD, diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy were associated with greater odds for the presence of anaemia. Conclusion: We found that 31.3% T2DM patients in a medical ward at NHK had previously undiagnosed anaemia. Anaemia screening during diabetes diagnosis, maintaining glycaemic control and raising patient awareness can reduce anaemia prevalence, improve patient quality of life and potentially reduce microvascular complications. Background: Promoting patient participation stands as a global priority in nursing care. Currently, there is a lack of a standardized tool to assess the culture of patient participation from the perspective of nurses in China. Aims: To translate and examine the validity and reliability of the Patient Participation Culture Tool for healthcare workers (PaCT-HCW) on general hospital wards in Chinese nursing context. Methods: A cross-sectional research study was conducted among 812 nurses. Brislin's recommendations were adhered to during the translation of the scale. Validity was assessed using construct validity, content validity, and face validity. Split-half reliability, test–retest reliability, and internal consistency reliability were used to evaluate dependability. The study was guided and reported following the STROBE checklist and recommendations for reporting the results of studies of instrument and scale development and testing. Results: The Chinese version of PaCT-HCW (the PaCT-HCW-C) exhibits good face validity and content validity. A rigorous exploratory factor analyse verified a six-factor (competence, support, perceived lack of time, information sharing and dialogue, response to questions and acceptance of a new role) scale structure with a cumulative variance contribution of the factors with 44 items of 68.840%. With a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.962, split-half reliability of 0.866, and intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.989, the instrument demonstrates great reliability. Confirmatory factor analysis results validated the consistency of the six factors with the structure of the PaCT-HCW-C scale. Conclusions: The 44-item PaCT-HCW-C is a valid and reliable instrument with satisfactory psychometric properties. It could serve as a tool for assessing the effectiveness of international programs aimed at fostering patient participation from the perspective of nurses, while also providing insights from China's practical experiences. Background: Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Dyspnea, affecting up to 60% of cancer patients, exacerbates physical and psychological distress, reducing quality of life. This study aims to explore the relationship between dyspnea and factors such as age, sex, clinical diagnosis, and treatment lines in cancer patients, with the goal of improving understanding and management of this debilitating symptom to enhance patient care and quality of life. Methods: This study employed an observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive approach to investigate patients with oncological disease at the University Hospital of Salamanca between March 2021 and April 2024. A convenience sample was selected, including patients over 18 years old with a pathological diagnosis of cancer, experiencing any degree of dyspnea, and who consented to participate by signing the informed consent. Exclusion criteria included lack of consent and clinical conditions that prevented an interview. The studied variables encompass sociodemographic (age, gender, diagnosis, tumor stage, number of treatment lines) and clinical aspects (daily activities, degree of dyspnea, functional capacity, physical performance), evaluated using the Barthel Index, the mMRC Dyspnea Scale, the ECOG Scale, and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Data were collected through semistructured interviews and medical records, and analyzed using specialized software. This research has ethical approval CEiM Code 2023 12 1472, Reference 2024/01. Results: The mean age was 66.82 years. Lung cancer was predominant (60.2%), with most patients in stage 3 (65.7%) and receiving three treatment lines (68.7%). Higher age, advanced disease stage, and more treatment lines correlated with lower Barthel and SPPB scores, and higher ECOG and mMRC scores, indicating worse functionality, physical performance, and greater dyspnea. No significant correlations were found between gender or pathological diagnosis and the studied variables. Conclusions: Advanced age, higher disease stage, and more treatment lines are associated with decreased functionality, poorer physical performance, and increased dyspnea in cancer patients. Gender and specific cancer diagnosis do not significantly affect these relationships. Addressing dyspnea is crucial to improving the quality of life and physical performance in this population. Background: Cytotoxic medicine contamination of preparation and administration areas of oncology healthcare facilities poses a risk to staff facing repeated low‐level exposure over time. The use of closed‐system transfer devices (CSTDs) during preparation and administration of cytotoxic products may reduce the levels of contamination. The primary aim was to determine the levels of cytotoxic medicine contamination in preparation and administration areas of hospitals that use CSTDs compared to those that do not. Aim: The primary aim was to determine the levels of cytotoxic medicine contamination in preparation and administration areas of hospitals that use CSTDs compared to those that do not. Method: A retrospective, cross‐sectional study across four Australian hospitals was conducted. Cytotoxic medicine contamination was determined via surface wipe sampling on six specified surfaces. The samples were tested for cyclophosphamide, docetaxel, etoposide, ifosfamide, irinotecan, methotrexate, paclitaxel, pemetrexed, topotecan, and vinblastine. This project was exempt due to the local policy requirements that constitute research by the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Human Research Ethics Committee (Reference no: ETH01899). The justification for this ethics exemption was as follows: this was a study involving sample testing only and did not include human participants or participation. Results: Environmental contamination with cytotoxic medications was observed at all hospitals, regardless of the CSTD used. Of the 24 samples tested, the agent most frequently seen was ifosfamide with 29% (n = 7), followed by cyclophosphamide 13% (n = 3), and methotrexate 8% (n = 2). There was no statistically significant difference between hospitals that used CSTDs compared to hospitals that did not (25% vs 42%, p = 0.67). Contamination was more extensive in preparation areas than administration areas, and was observed on the biological safety cabinets (BSC) worktop, packaging bench, and floor in front of the BSCs. Conclusion: All sites had contamination present for cytotoxic medicines. There was no statistically significant difference in the proportion of contaminated surfaces between sites that used CSTDs versus sites where CSTDs were not used. Aim: This study examines the intricate language and communication patterns of nurse‐to‐nurse handoffs across three units with varying patient acuity levels and nurse–patient ratios, seeking to identify linguistic factors that may affect the quality of information transfer and patient outcomes. Design: A mixed‐methods cross‐sectional design. Methods: This study used the Nurse‐to‐Nurse Transition of Care Communication Model to explore the content and meaning of language in nursing handoffs within a large academic medical centre. Data were collected on three units through digital audio recordings of 20 handoffs between June and September 2022, which were transcribed and analysed using the Linguistic Inquiry Word Count programme. Trustworthiness was established by adhering to COREQ and STROBE guidelines for qualitative and quantitative research, respectively. Results: Analysis revealed a preference for casual, narrative language across all units, with ICU nurses demonstrating a higher confidence and leadership in communication. Cognitive processes such as insight and causation were found to be underrepresented, indicating a potential area for miscommunication. Communication motives driven by affiliation were more pronounced in ICU settings, suggesting a strong collaborative nature. No significant differences were observed among the units post multiple testing adjustments. Speech dysfluencies were most pronounced in ICU handoffs, reflecting possible stress and cognitive overload. Conclusion: The study highlights the need for improved communication strategies such as interventions to enhance language clarity and incorporating technological tools into handoff processes to mitigate potential miscommunications and errors. The findings advance nursing science by highlighting the critical role of nuanced language in varied‐acuity hospital settings and the necessity for structured nurse education in handoff communication and standardized handoff procedures. The study aim was to determine the risk of Manual patient handling (MPH) in Shahroud public hospitals, Iran. A cross-sectional study was performed in Imam Hossein (IHospital) and Bahar (BHospital) with 21 wards. MPH risk assessment was performed using MAPO (Movement and Assistance of Hospital Patient) index. The ratio of operator to disabled patient (NC/Op and PC/Op), lifting, minor aid, wheelchair, environmental, and training factor are evaluated to calculate MAPO index. Among studied wards 57%, 33.3%, and 9.5%, respectively, were in the high, moderate, and low risk exposure level. The maximum MAPO score were 16.7 in CCU of IHospital. Emergency ward of BHospital had the highest score of 9.8 and PC/OP ratio 17.5. The most risk factors were minor aid (90.5%), lifting factor (71.4%), and PC/OP (66.7%). Using humor as a caregiving strategy can help professionals perceive daily and work-related events from a more optimistic and light-hearted perspective. The main objective of this study was to analyze humor styles among health care professionals. A cross-sectional and correlational design was employed. Data were collected using the Humor Styles Questionnaire, which measures four humor styles: affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating humor. Health care professionals scored higher in positive humor than negative humor. Age exhibited a negative correlation with positive humor. Significant differences were observed between marital status and affiliative and self-enhancing humor, professional category and hospital unit with aggressive humor, shift work and self-enhancing humor, and type of contract and experience with affiliative humor. Health care professionals employ various humor styles based on their social and work contexts. Background: In 2020, the prevalence of cancer rose to 844,778 cases among the population aged 0–19 years. Approximately 90% of individuals under 18 years of age reside in low- and middle-income countries, where cancer survivors report adverse outcomes that negatively impact their general health, emotional state, and external factors such as academic performance due to the effect of these outcomes on executive functions. The Wisconsin Cart Sorting Test (WCST) is the gold standard for evaluating executive functioning. Therefore, this article (1) reports the performance of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) in oncopediatric patients from Cali, Colombia; (2) indicates the reliability of the WCST; (3) describes the association between cancer type and executive functioning in patients; (4) describes the differences between patients with various executive deficits and their executive total scores; and (5) describes the association between cancer type and the presence of brain deficits based on the WCST. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 24 oncopediatric patients were interviewed and evaluated via the WCST. Results: The mean age was 12.08 years (SD 3.98); 20.8% of the patients were women, 70.8% had a primary diagnosis of leukemia, 8% exhibited acquired brain deficits, and more than 75% displayed adequate functional indicators of executive functions. Robust statistics were employed to explore the differences between the types of diagnosis and performance in executive functions, and no statistically significant differences were found (p = 0.156). We found that the WCST has a reliable Cronbach's α of 0.804. Oncopediatric patients without brain deficits presented strong results in terms of executive functions (p = 0.002), with a moderate effect size (0.727). Conclusions: The WCST is reliable for discriminating executive functioning among pediatric cancer patients. This descriptive study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the attitudes of nurses working at a university hospital towards older people and their compassion levels. The sample of the study comprised 432 nurses working at a university hospital. The data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the University of California at Los Angeles Geriatrics Attitudes Scale, and the Compassion Scale. In the analysis of the data, frequencies, percentages, arithmetic mean values, tests for the significance of the difference between two mean values, the Kruskal-Wallis test, and Pearson's correlation test were used. The attitudes of the participants towards older adults were positive (47.18 ± 6.40), and their compassion levels were high (4.08 ± 0.41). There was a significant positive correlation between the participants' mean scores on the University of California at Los Angeles Geriatrics Attitudes Scale and the Compassion Scale (r = 0.313). The participants had positive attitudes towards elderly individuals and high compassion levels. As the participants' compassion levels increased, so did their mean University of California at Los Angeles Geriatrics Attitudes Scale scores. Gender, length of service, working unit, status of living with an older person, and compassion were identified as predictors of University of California at Los Angeles Geriatrics Attitudes Scale scores. The use of methods likely to increase compassion in nurses' education and professional life may increase their perception of attitudes towards older age and thus ensure that older people receive quality healthcare. Background: Falls are themost frequent accident experienced by inpatients in hospitals. As falls affect patient outcomes, high fall risk factors should be studied to prevent falls and improve patient safety. However, the relationship between hospital unit characteristics and fall risk has never been assessed. Purpose: This studywas designed to identify the unit characteristics significantly related to fall risk. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the medical records of patients hospitalized in a Japanese academic hospital between 2018 and 2019. This study quantified unit activities and utilizedDiagnosis Procedure Combination data to examine unit characteristics related to falls based on unit day. Results: Data on 16,307 patients were included in the analysis, and 355 unit days were certified as fall events. Based on patient condition and medical treatment, the results identified antineoplastic injections, radiation therapy, aseptic treatment room, and functional status of partly assisted transfers,meals, and oral care as unit characteristics associated with increased fall events. Decreased nursing time per patient at night (odds ratio [OR] = 0.75, p = .04) and higher numbers of partially assisted transfer patients were also identified as unit characteristics associated with higher fall incidence rates (OR = 5.56, p = .01). Conclusions: The results of this study are expected to assist nurses to predict falls based on unit characteristics; reducing nursing time in the units was found to be a factor associated with higher fall risk. Nursemanagersmust understand the unit-related fall risk factors, appropriately assign nurse staffing numbers, and demonstrate nursing leadership to prevent falls in their units. Aim: Stress negatively affects students' health, self-esteem, and clinical performance. Although stress has been analyzed on a long-term basis and many clinical stressors are known, some of the factors potentially triggering stress have not been adequately studied, and the results are not consistent. Our research focused on an assessment of the stress intensity that nursing and midwifery students experience and the impact of ward type, difficulty in providing nursing care, and previous experience on perceptions of stress. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The study sample (n = 258) consisted of 65.5% nursing and 34.5% midwifery students who had completed their clinical training in basal pediatric (36.5%), surgical (27.5%), and medical (36.0%) wards. We analyzed stress intensity (0-10), perception of the difficulty in providing nursing care from the student's perspective (0-10), and their previous experience. Results: Across the entire group of students, the stress intensity was 3.84 (SD = 2.71). Students providing care in pediatric wards (M = 4.72) experienced the highest stress intensity, especially when compared to students in medical wards (M = 2.69), (p < 0.001). The provision of care is most demanding in pediatric wards (M = 4.91) compared to surgical (M = 2.97) and medical wards (M = 3.08), (p < 0.001). Difficulty in providing care is significantly associated with stress intensity (r = 0.548). Previous clinical experience reduces the perception of stress. However, we found a significant decrease only in surgical and medical wards. Conclusion: To reduce the perception of stress in pediatric wards, attention needs to be paid to the quality of pre-clinical training focused on pediatric patient care. Sleep problems are common in children with cerebral palsy (CWCP). However, the effect of sleep problems in CWCP on caregivers has not been well studied. We aimed to describe the sleep problems in CWCP and their caregivers, and explore the effect of the children's sleep on the caregivers' sleep. This cross-sectional, mixed-methods research was conducted at a pediatric neurology clinic in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used for assessing sleep problems of the children and their caregivers, respectively. We held three focused group discussions (FGDs) involving 18 caregivers using a pretested FGD guide. We analyzed the quantitative data using Stata-15 software, while qualitative data were transcribed and managed using ATLAS.ti Software. We studied 71 CWCP–caregiver dyads and 69 age- and sex-matched controls. There was a male preponderance for CWCP (M:F = 1.09:1) and female preponderance for caregivers (89.5%). Sleep disturbances (SDSC > 40) occurred in 34% of CP children and poor sleep quality was seen in 39% of caregivers. When compared with age- and sex-matched typically developing peers, there was a statistically significant higher sleep disturbance in CWCP (p = 0.009). Sleep difficulties in the CWCP comprise sleep–wake transition disorders (45.0%), difficulty initiating sleep (43.3%), and sleep breathing disorders (37.5%). Caregivers experienced short sleep duration. One mother said: "It affects my sleep, health, and work. It affects everything about me." Patient safety culture is relevant both in the delivery of care and in the training of nursing staff, its purpose being to prevent and reduce risks associated with health care. This research aims to evaluate patient safety culture from the perspective of the nursing teams in a highly complex public hospital in the city of Valparaíso, Chile. A cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach applying descriptive, bivariate, and inferential statistical analysis was conducted on 259 nurses and nursing assistants from 13 adult medical–surgical units of the Carlos Van Buren hospital. The participants were obtained through a non-probabilistic convenience sample, answering the hospital survey on Patient Safety Culture version 2.0 (HSOPS 2.0), adapted to the Chilean population. The best-evaluated dimension was communication and receptivity; the worst was the support administrators provide for patient safety. This study identified the weaknesses and strengths of the hospital, the most worrying weakness being the shortage of human capital, material, and financial resources necessary to improve patient safety. (1) Background: Job satisfaction and professional burnout directly impact human life, depending on various professional, non-professional, and private determinants. Nurses, in particular, are highly susceptible to experiencing professional burnout, which, when combined with job satisfaction, significantly affects the quality of their services. This study aimed to assess the level of job satisfaction and job burnout among nurses working in urology departments, as well as the impact of sociodemographic factors. (2) Methods: The study involved 130 nurses working in urology departments in Poland. Researchers conducted an anonymous questionnaire comprising a sociodemographic section and two standardized questionnaires: the Link Burnout Questionnaire (LBQ) and the Scale of Job Satisfaction (SSP). (3) Results: The study group demonstrated an average level of job satisfaction (17.23 points) and an average level of professional burnout, indicating potential symptoms of professional burnout such as psychophysical exhaustion (22.29 points), lack of commitment to patient relationships (20.02 points), feelings of professional ineffectiveness (17.37 points), and disappointment (19.66 points). (4) Conclusions: The levels of job satisfaction and professional burnout among nurses in urology departments are comparable to those in other departments and countries. Background: Palliative care, which aims to alleviate physical and emotional distress from cancer, is underutilized in many African healthcare systems. Therefore, there is a lack of data on the need and utilization of palliative care services among women with breast cancer in Ethiopia. Objectives: The goal of this study was to identify the level of need and utilization of palliative care services and identify associated factors among women in an oncology department of Hawassa comprehensive and specialized hospitals. Design: Hospital-based cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 121 women age ⩾18 years old with breast cancer participated from 1 August to 30 October 2021. A hospital-based consecutive sampling technique was used. Data regarding the need and utilization of palliative care services were collected via questionnaire and interview, entered using EpiData 4.6.0.6, and analyzed by SPSS version 25. Variables with p < 0.25 were considered for multivariate analysis, and those with p < 0.05 indicate an association with palliative care utilization. Result: Seventy-two (59.5%) had worse utilization of palliative care services, with higher odds in rural areas (adjusted odds ratio = 11.82). Conclusion: The study findings indicated that more than half of the study participants had worse utilization of palliative care services, with rural living being a contributing factor. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between various factors and self-perceived transformational leadership among a sample of Filipino nurse managers (NMs). BACKGROUND: Transformational leadership plays a crucial role in promoting positive outcomes in healthcare settings, particularly for NMs. Understanding the factors that influence NMs' self-perceived transformational leadership is essential for improving leadership practices and enhancing organizational effectiveness. METHODS: A cross-sectional research design was used to collect data from 260 NMs using standardized measures. RESULTS: Employment status, the number of units managed, the type of hospital employment, psychological distress, and job satisfaction were factors that significantly influenced their leadership perceptions. CONCLUSION: By addressing the identified factors, nursing organizations can create an environment that promotes effective leadership practices, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes, staff satisfaction, and overall organizational performance. Background. Thrombocytopenia is the second most common hematological disorder in pregnancy after anemia worldwide and affects 7-8% of all pregnancies. Pregnant women with thrombocytopenia have complications of excessive bleeding during or after childbirth, exudation at the cesarean section, and neonatal thrombocytopenia. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of thrombocytopenia and its associated factors among pregnant women attending the Antenatal Care Service Unit of Wachemo University Nigist Ellen Mohammed Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Hosanna, Southern Ethiopia. Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 1 to August 30, 2022, involving 209 consecutive pregnant women who came to the hospital during the study period for antenatal care follow-up. Sociodemographic, reproductive, and other clinical data were collected using a structured questionnaire. A four-milliliter venous blood specimen was collected for complete blood analysis and peripheral blood smear. The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistical analysis and bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. A P value ≤0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results. The overall magnitude of thrombocytopenia among pregnant women was 14.8% (95% CI: 10, 19.6). The prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe thrombocytopenia was 77.4%, 16.1%, and 6.5%, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that rural residence (AOR = 2.6 and 95% CI = 1.02, 7.12), cigarette smoking (AOR = 8.4 and 95% CI = 1.86, 38), anemia (AOR = 8.3 and 95% CI = 2.7, 25.6), and alcohol consumption (AOR = 8.2 and 95% CI = 2.17–31) were significantly independent factors associated with the development of thrombocytopenia. Conclusion. The magnitude of thrombocytopenia in this study was 14.8%. Rural residence, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and anemia were significantly associated with thrombocytopenia. This study was conducted to determine the spiritual care needs of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. A cross-sectional descriptive design was used to analyze a total of 104 patients at a university hospital in Turkey. The data were collected using the Spiritual Care Needs Scale. The mean age of the patients participating in the study was 61.0 (10.2). It was determined that 31.7% of the patients stated that the concepts of spirituality and spiritual care are related to religion and worship. As a result, it was found that the patients receiving chemotherapy had high-spiritual care needs. The dimensions in which the spiritual needs of the patients were remarkably high were belief and spiritual practices, being in peace and security, the love and support of their relatives and being informed about health. The spiritual care need score of the patients increased significantly with marital status (p = 0.001), having children (p = 0.002), having a chronic disease (p = 0.04) and having an undergraduate/graduate level education (p = 0.01). Nurses should be aware of patient's spiritual needs, plan patient-specific spiritual care practices, conduct more studies on the effects of spiritual care on the patient and family and create guidelines for spiritual care practices in patients receiving chemotherapy in Turkey. Background: Missed nursing care (MNC) negatively impacts the quality of patient care. There may be a relationship between the nursing practice environment (NPE) and MNC; however, this relationship has not been examined in developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Purpose: To determine the relationship between the NPE and MNC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 300 participants was conducted in 4 teaching hospitals in Iran. Data were collected using a demographic and clinical form, the Nursing Professional Practice Environment Questionnaire, and MISSCARE survey and analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results: The hypothesized model was well fit, showing that 1 unit improvement of the NPE domains of patient-centered care , effective leadership , and policy transparency decreased MNC by 0.18, 0.12, and 0.05, respectively. Conclusion: The model confirmed the association between the dimensions of the NPE and MNC. These findings can assist health policymakers and nursing managers in improving the NPE. Background: The use of traditional and complementary medicine (TCM) by cancer patients remains common in several countries especially in the Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the reasons for use are complex and change with time and geographic location, they may vary from therapy to therapy, and they are different from one individual to another. The use of TCM has been associated with active coping behaviour and a way through which patients take control of their own health. However, cancer patients do not disclose their use of TCM to the attending healthcare professionals and therefore the effects of these medicines on the patients may not be ascertained. Aim: To investigate the use of traditional and complementary medicines among patients diagnosed with cancer. Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted at Senkatana Oncology clinic in May to June 2023. Cancer patients underwent standardized, quantitative interviews using structured questionnaires about their use of TCM. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Logistic regression analysis was also used to identify factors associated with satisfaction with the performance of TCM. Results: All interviewed patients (n = 50, 100%) reported to be using TCM. Patients consisted of 24 females (48%) and 26 males (52%) in the age range 14 to 82 years old. The majority of the study population was in the age group 35–44 years old. The most prevalent cancer among participating males was prostate cancer and among females was cervical cancer. Biological products use was the most prominent with the highest average percentage usage (14.7%). The majority of patients (66%, n = 33) indicated that they just wanted to try everything that could help. Patients (n = 47, 94%) further reported that they had been using complementary medicine during the same period as they were using conventional treatment so that both may work to help each other. Neither gender nor age predicted satisfaction with the performance of traditional and complementary medicine. Conclusions: It is concluded that all interviewed cancer patients use TCM. Patients indicated that one of the reasons for using TCM was that they wanted to try everything that could help in their cancer care. Patients further reported that they did not inform their oncologist of their concurrent use of TCM because they had been advised not to use other medicines besides what they are given at the clinic. Objective: This study aimed to assess the burden and psychosocial impact of spinal cord injury on the immediate caregivers at a tertiary health facility in Benin City, Edo State. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross‑sectional survey design was adopted among 73 family caregivers in the neurological ward of a tertiary health facility using a structured questionnaire as instrument of data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression. Results: Findings revealed that an overall mean of 2.73 indicates that the burden on the caregivers was moderate with a moderate psychological impact (m = 2.88) and a high sociological impact (m = 3.12). Factors affecting the caregiving provided by immediate caregivers include social and household responsibilities (94.5%), financial situation (89.0%), family support (83.6%), and health status of the caregiver (80.8%). Age (odds ratio [OR] = 5.67, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.23–27.17, P = 0.027), education (OR = 3.75, 95% CI: 1.05–13.39, P = 0.041), and “others” (spouses, siblings, friends, or extended family members) (OR = 3.167, 95% CI: 1.583–6.337, P = 0.001) were predictors for high psychological impact while education (OR = 0.074; 95% CI: 0.015–0.370, P = 0.001) and caregiving role (OR = 3.167; 95% CI: 0. 1.583–6.337, P = 0.001) high sociological impact. Conclusion: Majority of the caregivers experience moderate burden, moderate psychological impact, and high sociological impact. Understanding these factors is essential for developing targeted interventions and support services to address the unique needs of caregivers and mitigate the burden of caregiving on their psychosocial health. Background: We aimed to identify the factors affecting the inhospital Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to investigate the effect of the time of in-hospital CPR on its immediate outcome in pediatric patients. Methods: This retrospective study investigated CPR events performed at a teaching hospital in Tehran, Iran, from March 2018 to March 2019. After obtaining the necessary academic and ethical approvals, the pertinent data were transcribed from patient records and analyzed. No identifying data about patients or their families were extracted. Results: Chi-square test showed a significant difference in the occurrence of CPR on two-hour time blocks (p=0.041), with dips at 0-2 a.m. and 12-2 p.m. and heights at 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. (representing 5, 6, 17 and 17 CPR events, respectively). The occurrence of CPR during the night shift was significantly less than in the morning and evening shifts (p=0.000 and 0.005 respectively). Of 161 subjects with a known immediate outcome of CPR, 86 (53.4%) survived, and 75 (46.6%) died. The outcome was significantly less favorable in the evening shift compared to the morning shift (p=0.028), but no significant differences in the outcome were found between morning and night shifts (p=0.163), evening and night shifts (p=0.256), day and night (p=0.637) or workdays and weekends (p=0.925). Conclusion: We found a significantly higher occurrence of CPR at 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at the beginning and end of the evening shift and a higher rate of post-CPR death in this shift. Background. Nurses are one of the largest and costliest groups in healthcare organizations; therefore, it is important to comprehend their scope of practice. Aim. To contribute to the improvement of nursing resource management in medical-surgical and Intensive Care Units by identifying factors that influence the scope of nursing practice. The hypothesis was that the activities carried out by nurses in medical-surgical units and intensive care units are influenced by individual and job-related factors, with job characteristics having an additive and moderating effect on individual characteristics. Materials and Methods. Cross-sectional correlational design to test the relationship between the individual and job characteristics on the nursing scope of practice measured by the Actual Scope of Nursing Practice (ASCOP) questionnaire. The sample consisted of 270 nurses. Linear mixed effects models analysis (LME) was used with the aleatory effect of the intensive care unit (ICU). Results. Belonging to the ICU decreased the scope of practice of nurses. We found a statistically significant effect of psychological demand, practice environment, role ambiguity, and growth need strength on the scope of nursing practice. The models explained a variance up to 24%. Conclusions. Although the survey results revealed the existence of broader scope of practice levels in Spanish hospital units than in the original Canadian study, the use of scope of nursing practice remains suboptimal. Higher levels on the psychological demand, the practice environment and in the individual growth need strength were related with a broader scope of practice. Otherwise, role ambiguity negatively affected the scope of practice. Implications for Nursing Management. This article provides an analysis of the impact of individual and job-related characteristics on the nursing scope of practice. Bladder and bowel poststroke dysfunctions negatively impact patients' health. Stroke-related characteristics associated to these dysfunctions are poorly known. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of new-onset poststroke bladder and bowel dysfunctions, characterize their associated factors, and describe the dysfunctions' clinical approach. Cross-sectional study including 157 patients admitted to a single hospital's stroke unit with a first-ever stroke, during 3 months. An 18-item questionnaire was applied to assess dysfunctions pre and poststroke. The McNemar test was used to compare pre and poststroke prevalence. A logistic regression was used to estimate associations (OR, 95% CI) between individual characteristics and new-onset dysfunctions. We had 113 (72%) respondents. There was a significant increase in the prevalence of bladder and bowel dysfunctions poststroke (p < 0.001). Higher stroke severity was significantly associated with both new-onset poststroke bladder and bowel dysfunctions (OR = 15.00, 95% CI [4.92,45.76] and OR = 5.87,95%CI [2.14,16.12], respectively). Total anterior circulation strokes, cardioembolic strokes, and lower functionality at discharge were also significantly associated with both dysfunctions. Thirteen patients (11.5%) reported that health professionals addressed these dysfunctions. Poststroke bladder and bowel dysfunctions are highly prevalent. Being aware of their epidemiology helps draw attention to patients at higher risk of developing these dysfunctions, enhancing the rehabilitation process. Poststroke bladder and bowel dysfunctions are highly prevalent and under-recognised consequences of stroke. Being aware of their epidemiology and associated factors may help identify patients at higher risk of developing these dysfunctions. Background: Chemosensory changes that occur during chemotherapy can significantly impact food enjoyment, quality of life and recovery. Aim: To investigate chemosensory changes reported by oncology patients during chemotherapy. Methods: A mixed-method cross-sectional study design was used to explore 100 cancer patients' experiences of chemosensory changes during chemotherapy. All patients completed a questionnaire assessing their taste and smell preferences. A purposive sample of 30 patients underwent a semi-structured interview to elicit their thoughts on their experienced chemosensory changes. Descriptive statistics and themes were examined. Findings: The mean age of the sample was 50.56 years, and the majority of participants were female. The most stated taste alteration was bitter, while altered food preferences were also commonly experienced. Furthermore, most patients experienced unpleasant odours around food, while some experienced these odours even when food was not present. Overall, five themes were identified: changes in taste, changes in smell, changes in social life, altered comfort and food preferences. Conclusion: Chemosensory changes related to cancer and its treatment impact a person's nutrient intake, food-related behaviours, quality of life and treatment response. Patients who experience chemotherapy-associated chemosensory changes require specialised nutritional therapy to increase their eating-related pleasure. Background: Inpatient hyperglycaemia is common and associated with poor outcomes such as increased mortality and prolonged hospital stay. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of inpatient hyperglycaemia and glycaemic control in Putrajaya Hospital, Malaysia. Secondary objectives were to compare the length of stay (LOS), 30-day readmission rate, and death between controlled and uncontrolled glycaemic groups. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 1 July and 31 December 2019 among patients in medical wards who had a blood glucose (BG) level of > 7.8 mmol/L and stayed in the wards for ≥ 24 h. We retrieved information on demographics, diabetes history and BG profiles. The definition of controlled glycaemic status is when ≥ 80% of BG readings were between 4.0 mmol/L and 10.0 mmol/L during the hospital stay. Results: The prevalence of inpatient hyperglycaemia was 55.2%. There were 841 patients who met the eligibility criteria; their mean age was 60 (13.8) years old. Most (79.4%) of the patients were Malay and 53.9% were male. There were 452 (53.7%) patients in the uncontrolled group. They were younger and admitted with more kidney complications compared to those in the controlled group. The median LOS for both groups was 3 (2) days. The uncontrolled group showed a higher percentage of readmission within 30 days (7.5% versus 4.6 %) and death during admission (3.3% versus 1.6 %) (P = 0.100 and P = 0.082). Conclusion: The prevalence of inpatient hyperglycaemia was high. More than half of them had uncontrolled BG. Both groups had a similar average length of stay. INTRODUCTION Smoking prevalence is high in China, and healthcare workers are important for tobacco control. This study aimed to determine the smoking status, cognition of tobacco hazards, and smoking cessation-related knowledge among respiratory healthcare workers, and to explore their ability to provide smoking cessation assistance. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 among 1028 respiratory healthcare workers from 89 hospitals in Fujian Province, China. A self-designed electronic questionnaire was used to collect data on smoking status, knowledge of smoking hazards, and smoking cessation knowledge. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all questions. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between awareness of the tobacco control goals of Healthy China 2030 and demographic characteristics. RESULTS Among the healthcare workers surveyed, 3.4% were smokers, all of whom were male. Most respondents (99.4%) were aware of smoking as a cause of lung cancer, but awareness of smoking as a cause of non-respiratory cancer was lower. The awareness rate of smoking cessation support was high (>90%), but only 40.0% of participants were aware of the Healthy China 2030 tobacco control targets. Male (HR=2.16; 95% CI: 1.69-2.80) and participation in the cessation clinic (HR=1.47; 95% CI: 1.10-1.96) were associated with higher awareness of the targets. CONCLUSIONS Respiratory healthcare workers in Fujian Province demonstrated a high level of awareness regarding behavioral and pharmacotherapy support for smoking cessation. In order to enable healthcare workers to play a more active role in tobacco control, there is a need to increase public awareness of smoking cessation services in Fujian Province. BACKGROUND: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) plays an important role in avoiding endotracheal intubation during myasthenic crisis, yet there are few published data concerning long-term home NIV in stable out-patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of NIV in a cohort of subjects with stable MG and to analyze contributing factors that could predict the need of NIV. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study that included subjects diagnosed with MG managed in the respiratory care unit over the previous year. Subjects underwent clinical analysis including demographic, clinical, and functional respiratory data. RESULTS: Of the 50 subjects included, 35 (70%) were positive for nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antibodies, and 68% had a diagnosis of generalized MG. Bulbar symptoms developed in 16 (32%), and 10 (20%) subjects needed long-term home NIV. The only variable predicting the need for longterm NIV was MG severity measured with Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA), mainly grades IIB (odds ratio 0.14 [95% CI 0.02--0.85], P 5 .03) and IIIB (odds ratio 0.02 [95% CI 0.01--0.34], P 5 .01). CONCLUSIONS: Home NIV was needed in a substantial percentage of medically stable subjects with MG, mainly in those with generalized type and with oropharyngeal and/or respiratory muscle involvement (MGFA grades IIB and IIIB). Background: As red henna interferes with the working principles of pulse oximetry, it affects peripheral oxygen saturation readings. This study was conducted to determine the effect of henna on the pulse oximetry of sick children admitted to the emergency department (ED). Subjects and Methods: This was a prospective observational study on 100 sick children admitted to ED. The red henna was applied on the right index finger and right toe, while the left index finger and left toe served as control. SpO2 readings for the upper limbs and lower limbs were recorded simultaneously and compared. Results: The median (interquartile range) age was 4.0 (2.0--8.6) years. There was no significant difference between SpO2 (95.9±4.2 vs. 95.4±4.4) for the upper limb finger (t = 1.147, P = 0.254) and Spo2 (95.3% ±4.9% vs. 95.7% ±3.9%) for lower limb finger (t = 0.954, P = 0.342) with henna and their corresponding pair without henna. However, the SpO2 of children with hypoxia (92.12% ±5.6% vs. 86.88% ±9.6%) for upper limb finger (92.00% ±5.7% vs. 88.41% ±5.5%) and for the toe was significantly higher on digits with henna compared with their pairs without henna (t = 3.167, P = 0.006 upper limb pair; t = 6.351, P = 0.013 for lower limb pair). Conclusions: Red henna application does not significantly affect the reading of pulse oximetry among children without hypoxia but significantly overestimates the oximetry reading in hypoxic children. Background: Nursing, between healthcare professions, is the most at risk of violence and aggression. Most healthcare organizations rely on training as the primary strategy for the prevention of violence. Very little is known about the key factors for prevention against nurses: staff education, training and risk assessment. Objectives: The aim is to verify if the number of observed episodes of violence and aggression in renal units are associated with structural and prevention managerial strategies. Design: An observational, cross‐sectional study. Participants: They were part of a convention sample of participants in the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/European Renal Care Association Conference of 2019, who understood the English Language and had a smartphone or tablet. Measurements: The tool used was a questionnaire developed by Zampieron in 2010, with closed questions, focused on violence and aggression's prevention and management. Conclusions: In conclusion our study found that organizational and managerial strategies to address violence and aggression are highly correlated with observed violence in unit. Nurses are encouraged to become proactive by participating in prevention committees and policies, attending prevention training offered by unit, and reporting all incidents including those witnessed. Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the impact of delirium knowledge and delirium nursing confidence on delirium nursing practice among nurses working in an integrated nursing and caring services ward. Methods: This descriptive study included 102 registered nurses with a minimum of 6 months of professional experience from the integrated nursing and caring services ward of a university hospital in Uijeongbu City. Data were collected from May 10, 2023 to July 5, 2023 and were subjected to independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 27.0 program. Results: Delirium nursing knowledge was positively correlated with delirium nursing confidence (r=.25, p=.01). Delirium nursing confidence was positively correlated with delirium nursing performance (r=.41, p<.001). Factors influencing delirium nursing performance were delirium nursing confidence (β=.32, p=.001), marital status (β=.21, p=.016), and delirium education experience (β=-.19, p=.032). The model used in this study explained 27% of the variance in delirium nursing performance (adjusted R2 =0.27, F=8.46, p<.001). Conclusion: This study identified factors that influence delirium nursing performance of nurses in an integrated nursing and caring services ward in a university hospital. Based on the findings, delirium nursing education programs should include strategies that can improve delirium nursing confidence. Further research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of developing a delirium nursing practice improvement program and guideline that reflects the characteristics of integrated nursing and caring services wards. Background: With the rapid growth of an aging global population and proportion, the prevalence of frailty is constantly increasing. Therefore, finding a frailty assessment tool suitable for clinical application by physicians has become the primary link in the comprehensive management of frailty in elderly patients. This study used the (fr) AGILE scale to investigate the frailty status of elderly patients from internal medicine wards and identified relevant factors that affect the severity of frailty. Method: In this study, 408 elderly inpatients in internal medicine departments of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from May 2021 to August 2022 were enrolled as research subjects, and a cross-sectional observational study was conducted. Researchers evaluated the frailty based on the (fr)AGILE scale score. The general condition, past medical history, physical examination, laboratory examination, nutrition control score, intervention and treatment measures and other elderly patient information was collected. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relevant factors that affect the severity of frailty and hospitalization costs. Results: According to the (fr)AGILE scale score, the elderly patients were divided into groups to determine whether they were frail and the severity of the frailty. Among them, 164 patients were in the prefrailty stage, which accounted for 40.2%. There were 188 cases of mild frailty that accounted for 46.1%, and 56 cases of moderate to severe frailty that accounted for 13.7%. Decreased grip strength, elevated white blood cell levels, and low sodium and potassium are independent risk factors affecting the severity of frailty. As the severity of frailty increases, the proportion of sodium, potassium, albumin supplementation as well as anti-infection gradually increases. Conclusion: Frailty is a common elderly syndrome with a high incidence among elderly patients in internal medicine departments. The main manifestations of frailty vary with different severity levels. Inflammation, anemia, and poor nutritional status can lead to an increase in the severity of frailty as well as blood hypercoagulability, myocardial damage, and additional supportive interventions. Introduction: Preoperative education is an essential nursing task that can be affected by the nurses' perception. Patients may be receiving insufficient vital information before surgery. However, the essential information that should be provided to patients undergoing surgery is not fully addressed. Objective: To assess the essential elements of preoperative information as perceived by the surgical nurses. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A convenience sample of 224 registered nurses who were working at surgical units was recruited from two hospitals. A preoperative teaching questionnaire was used. Results: Details about the operation (4.39 ± 0.61) and preoperative preparation (4.36 ± 0.61) were the most important domains of preoperative education as perceived by nurses. The results show significant differences between the perceived and actual preoperative educational practice across all domains except the preoperative preparation. Conclusions: The delivery of preoperative education could be affected by nurses' perceptions. Background: The fear of taking away hope hinders clinicians' willingness to share serious news with patients with advanced disease. Unrealistic illness expectations, on the other hand, can complicate decision making and end-of-life care outcomes. Exploration of the association between hope and illness expectations can support clinicians in better communication with their patients. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore whether realistic illness expectations are associated with reduced hope in people with advanced cancer. Design: This is a cross-sectional secondary analysis of baseline data from a primary palliative care cluster-randomized trial CONNECT (data collected from July 2016 to October 2020). Hope was measured by Herth Hope Index. Illness expectations were measured by assessing patients' understanding of their treatment goals, life expectancy, and terminal illness acknowledgement. Multivariable regression was performed, adjusting for demographical and clinical confounders. Setting/participants: Adult patients with advanced solid cancers recruited across 17 oncology clinics. Results: Data from 672 patients were included in the study, with mean age of 69.3 years (±10.2), 53.6% were female. Proportion of patients indicating realistic expectations varied based on which question was asked from 10% to 46%. Median level of hope was 39 (IQR = 36–43). Multivariate non-inferiority regression did not find any significant differences in hope between patients with more and less realistic illness expectations. Conclusions: Our results suggest that hope can be sustained while holding both realistic and unrealistic illness expectations. Background: Interruptions have been reported to contribute to clinical errors and procedural failures. Objective: To analyze the interruptions experienced by nurses during the preparation and administration of high-risk medications. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in an intensive care and inpatient unit. The interruptions experienced by nurses during the medication process were observed through two checklists. The sample was selected by convenience in April-May 2019. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze quantitative data in IBM SPSS Statistics software, version 24.0, while content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Results: In 193 medication processes, there were 137 interruptions. Other members of the healthcare team initiated most interruptions through conversations. These interruptions were mostly negative and occurred during the preparation phase. The multitasking strategy was used to manage them. Conclusion: Interruptions during the medication process were primarily associated with professional and social communications. Purpose: The study aims to report various ocular manifestations among renal transplant recipients. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted on renal transplant patients, with at least 4 months of posttransplant duration, attending a nephrology clinic. A comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation was performed to record various ocular manifestations. The statistical association between ocular findings and pretransplant as well as posttransplant duration was assessed. Results: One hundred and twenty-three eyes of 62 patients, with a mean age of 37.6 ± 8.2 years and functional graft, were included in the study. Diabetic nephropathy was found to be the most common underlying cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and renal transplant. Hypertensive retinopathy (37.4%) was found to be the most frequent ophthalmic manifestation, followed by diabetic retinopathy (24.39%), dry eye (22.76%), cataract (18.69%), and change in refractive error (17.89%). The occurrence of hypertensive retinopathy and refractive power change was found to be significantly associated with pretransplant dialysis duration. In contrast, concerning the posttransplant period, the frequency of all the major ocular manifestations, except the dry eye, was observed to be statistically significant. Conclusion: Patients with ESRD and renal transplant should be advised to undergo regular comprehensive eye examinations. Many ocular manifestations are preventable and/or treatable, thus interdisciplinary partnership between nephrologists and ophthalmologists is warranted to improve vision and quality of life in transplant recipients. Background: Our understanding of how highly reliable care delivery is brought about remains elusive, in part, because there is limited evidence regarding the organizational practices that enable safety organizing—the behaviors and processes underlying high reliability. Purpose: Because safety organizing relies on discretionary effort and lowering barriers to sharing expertise and discussing threats to safety and errors, we investigate three pay practices and their effects on information sharing and, in turn, safety organizing. Specifically, we examine average pay level, minimum pay rates, and pay dispersion on nursing units and their relationship with information sharing and safety organizing. Method: Cross-sectional analyses of survey data from 1,461 registered nurses in 45 nursing units in three Midwestern hospitals on safety organizing linked to administrative data on pay practices from the organization's human resource systems. Pay data and survey responses were aggregated to the nursing unit level. PROCESS and structural equation modeling were used to simultaneously test for direct and indirect effects of pay variables on information sharing and safety organizing. Results: PROCESS and Mplus path analysis indicated that paying a higher minimum rate in the unit and having lower pay dispersion have indirect, desirable associations with safety organizing through information sharing. Conclusion: Pay practices can help organizations enhance safety organizing. In particular, higher pay rates for the lowest level nurses and lower pay dispersion among nurses are associated with unit-level information sharing and safety organizing. Practice Implications: Having pay practices associated with lower within-unit variation and higher pay for the lowest paid members of a unit may be viable strategies for greater information sharing and safety organizing. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the risk of malnutrition in cancer chemotherapy patients and identify the associated factors. Materials and Methods: It is a cross-sectional study. Purposive sampling was used to collect data from a tertiary care cancer centre. The study collected data from 101 participants and used a malnutrition screening tool (MST) to assess the risk of malnutrition. Results: The majority of participants in the study were female (61.4%) and in the 3rd or 4th stage of cancer (57.4% and 41.6%, respectively). Of the participants, 63.4% experienced weight loss without trying chemotherapy, and 60.4% were at risk for malnutrition. Cancer stage was associated with malnutrition risk, but other clinical variables were not. Conclusion: Malnutrition is a significant issue among cancer chemotherapy patients in the study's population. The findings of this study can be used to develop interventions to prevent and manage malnutrition in patients with cancer and improve the effectiveness of cancer treatment in the Indian population. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly challenged global healthcare systems, particularly impacting the psychological health of nurses. This study examines the psychosocial impact and work-related stressors faced by Filipino nurses during the COVID-19 crisis. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used to gather data from May 2021 to May 2022. Participants included registered nurses recruited from across the Philippines, focusing on their exposure to work-related stressors, burnout, job satisfaction, and coping activities. The survey included validated items that measured work related variables (e.g., job responsibilities, workload) and personal stress management strategies. Descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, frequencies, and percentages) were calculated to interpret the continuous and categorical variables. Results: A total of 2,229 nurses participated in the survey. Findings indicate that 78.9% of nurses experienced increased workloads, and 36% were assigned to units outside their expertise. Despite the high stress and burnout rates (30.4% reported symptoms), 56.4% of nurses intended to stay in their positions. The most common coping strategies were use of social media (53.7%) and connecting with friends and family (51.5%). Conclusion: Filipino nurses displayed considerable resilience despite facing severe work-related stressors and psychological strains during the pandemic. The study highlights significant stressors such as increased workload, role shifts, and the lack of clear workplace goals, contributing to burnout and reduced job satisfaction. This study underscores the need for enhanced support systems and policies to safeguard nurses' well-being, recommending more robust mental health services, adequate staffing, and the provision of necessary resources and training to prepare nurses for future health crises better. Background Improving retention of nurses working in critical care is an urgent priority. Ideas on how to do this abound, but actual data are inconclusive. One common theory is that simply increasing nurse resiliency will minimize turnover. Objective To determine whether knowledge and application of compassionate self-care practices can significantly improve nurses' professional quality of life and thereby promote their retention. Methods This pilot study had a mixed-methods design. A training program in self-care techniques was implemented in a level IV trauma care secondary hospital, with data collected before and after the intervention by means of written surveys. Study participants were 40 nursing professionals working in an intensive care unit and a medical/surgical unit. The underlying theory was Jean Watson's framework of human caring. Results The study results showed that, although the participants evaluated the training program positively and reported improved work-life balance, they did not experience a statistically significant change in professional quality of life from before the intervention to after the intervention. Conclusions The study findings are consistent with current literature indicating that prevention of compassion fatigue and burnout cannot be achieved by the efforts of individuals alone but requires collaboration between professionals and their institutions, with special attention to 3 elements: (1) a healthy work environment, (2) organizational support, and (3) nurse resiliency. Purpose: The Oral Mucositis Daily Questionnaire (OMDQ) can be used in pediatric cancer patients. This study aimed to investigate the Turkish validity and reliability of the OMDQ in children aged 8 - 18 years diagnosed with cancer at two university hospital pediatric hematology/oncology clinics. Material and Methods: Children's International Mucositis Evaluation Scale (ChIMES) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Mucositis Grading Scale were used in parallel form reliability. Thirty children with oral mucositis were included in the study at the inter-rater and test-retest reliability on the 14th and 15th days of chemotherapy treatment. Ninety-two children were included for the construct validity. Kappa Compliance Analysis, Spearman's correlation coefficient, and Cronbach's alpha were evaluated. Results: The content validity index was calculated for the scores given by the experts and the items were changed between .90 and 1.00. On the 14th and 15th days of chemotherapy treatment, the correlation values for each item of OMDQ were found to be over .64. In the construct validity, the patient's mean age was 11.7±3.3, and 46.7% diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Cronbach Alpha value of OMDQ was .92. The OMDQ items showed a positive correlation with each other except for diarrhea questions. According to the WHO Oral Mucositis Grading Scale, 55.4% of the patients had grade 1 mucositis. The similar items of OMDQ and ChIMES had a positive significant relationship (p < .001). Conclusion: The Turkish version of the OMDQ was a valid and reliable instrument in children aged 8 - 18 years diagnosed with cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
