This study evaluates the potential use of discarded plasterboard paper as fibers from buildings to reinforce concrete. Various concentrations of wastepaper fibers (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% by weight of the binder) were investigated in this research. To mitigate the water absorption effect of the paper fibers, metakaolin was employed as a partial cement replacement. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of the wastepaper fiber enhances the mechanical and durability performance of the concrete. The optimal fiber proportion was identified as 1%, leading to a 29% increase in the compressive strength, a 38% increase in the splitting tensile strength, a 12% decrease in the water absorption, and a 23% decrease in the drying shrinkage with respect to the concrete containing 20% metakaolin. However, exceeding this optimal fiber content results in decreased mechanical and durability properties due to the fiber agglomeration and non-uniform fiber distribution within the concrete matrix. Based on the microstructural analysis, the improved performance of the concrete is ascribed to decreased porosity, more refined pore structure, and reduced propagation of microcracks within the concrete matrix in the presence of wastepaper fiber. According to the results, concrete containing 20% metakaolin and 1% wastepaper fiber exhibits durability and mechanical properties comparable to those of the traditional concrete. This finding highlights the significant promise of reducing dependency on conventional cement and incorporating suitable recycled materials, such as discarded plasterboard, and secondary by-products like metakaolin. Cracking in concrete box girder bridges will have a significant impact on the safety and durability of the structure, and many box girder bridges which are in service have undergone varying degrees of cracking. Currently, the safety design of actual bridge projects place an emphasis on the stress or the load value of a cross section at the limit value specified in the code for safety control. This design method assumes that the member itself is of uniform and continuous material and is internally undamaged. However, the bridge structure is more or less cracked to varying degrees during the period from casting to construction to operation of the concrete members. In this paper, a finite element computational model of a three-span prestressed concrete box girder bridge with existing cracks is established based on the fracture mechanics theory, and the critical parameters of crack extension are introduced to evaluate the extension state of cracks. At the same time, the extended stability of the existing cracks of the box girder bridge is analyzed by considering the temperature effect, vehicle loading, and prestressing loss, and the sensitivity of crack extension under each working condition is investigated. The results show that, with the increase in crack length and depth, the crack expansion is promoted, but the effect is relatively small, and the maximum stress intensity factor is only 6.48 MPa mm1/2. Under the multi-factor coupling effect, the cracks show a composite crack expansion dominated by type I cracks, the longitudinal cracks of the existing base plate are in a stable state, the maximum value of the crack expansion critical parameter of the vertical cracks of the webs reaches 1.087, and there is a tendency to expand locally. The maximum value of the critical parameter for crack extension of the vertical crack in the web plate reaches 1.087, and there is a tendency towards local expansion. The crack extension evaluation criteria proposed in this paper have a certain reference value for crack extension research on similar concrete box girder bridges and provide a scientific basis for the optimized design of similar bridges. The range of sensor technologies for structural health monitoring (SHM) systems is expanding as the need for ongoing structural monitoring increases. In such a case, damage to the monitored structure elements is detected using an integrated network of sensors operating in real-time or periodically in frequent time stamps. This paper briefly introduces a new type of sensor, called a Customized Crack Propagation Sensor (CCPS), which is an alternative for crack gauges, but with enhanced functional features and customizability. Due to those characteristics, it is necessary to develop a family of computer-aided supporting models for rapid prototyping and analysis of the new designs of sensors of various shapes and configurations, which this paper presents by use of simulation tools. For a prototyping of the sensor lay out, an algorithm is elaborated, based on an application created in LabVIEW 2022 software, which generates two spreadsheets formatted by the requirements of Autodesk Inventor 2014 and COMSOL Multiphysics 5.6 software, based on data entered by the user. As a result, a tailored-in-shape CCPS layout is prepared. A parametric model of the sensor is prepared in Autodesk Inventor software, which automatically changes its geometric dimensions after changing data in an MS Excel spreadsheet. Then, the generated layout is analyzed to obtain electromechanical characteristics for defined CCPS geometry and materials used in the COMSOL Multiphysics software. Another application is devoted to purely mechanical analysis. The graphical user interface (GUI) add-on based on the Abaqus 2018 software engine is prepared for advanced mechanical analysis simulations of sensor materials in selected loading scenarios. The GUI is used for entering material libraries and the selection of loading conditions and a type of specimen, while the results of the numerical analysis are delivered through Abaqus. The main advantage of the developed GUI is the capacity for personnel inexperienced in using the Abaqus environment to perform analysis. Some results of simulation tests carried out in both COMSOL Multiphysics as well as Abaqus software are delivered in this paper, using a predefined parametric sensor model. For example, using a rigid epoxy resin for an insulating layer shows a negligible difference in the level of strain compared to the structure during a simulated tensile test, specifically in the tested layer thickness range of up to 0.3 mm. However, during bending tests, an approx. 17% change in principal strain level can be observed through the top to bottom edge of the epoxy resin layer. The adopted methodology for carrying out simulation studies assumes the parallel use of a set of various computer-aided tools. This approach allows for taking advantage of individual software environments, which allows for expanding the scope of analyses and using the developed models and applications in further research activities. In hydraulic fracturing tests, the initial crack length and the compressibility of the injection system have a significant effect on the initiation and propagation of the fracture. Numerical or theoretical models that ignore the compressibility of the injection system are unable to accurately predict fracture behavior. In this paper, a 2D analytical/numerical model based on linear elastic fracture mechanics is presented for the initiation and propagation of hydraulic fracturing from two transversely symmetrical cracks in a borehole wall. It is assumed that the fracture is driven by compressible inviscid fluid in a permeable medium. To solve the problem, the governing equations are made dimensionless and the problem is solved in the compressibility–toughness-dominated propagation regime. According to the results, the initial crack length and the compressibility of the injection system have a significant effect on fracture initiation behavior. When the initial flaw length is small or compressibility effects are important, the initiation of the fracture is accompanied by instability and the occurrence of a sudden decrease in borehole pressure and a sudden increase in crack length. If the initial crack length is large or the compressibility effects are negligible, the crack propagation is stable. The leak-off coefficient has no effect on the pressure level required for crack propagation, but with an increase in leak-off, more time is required to reach the conditions for crack propagation. In supporting the stable operation of high-penetration renewable energy grids, flywheel energy storage systems undergo frequent charge–discharge cycles, resulting in significant stress fluctuations in the rotor core. This paper investigates the fatigue life of flywheel energy storage rotors fabricated from 30Cr2Ni4MoV alloy steel, attempting to elucidate the material's mechanical properties, crack propagation behavior, and impact of internal defects on fatigue life. Tensile tests reveal that the material exhibited high yield (992 MPa) and tensile strengths (1130 MPa). The Paris formula is used to model crack growth rates, ending in good agreement with the experimental data. Fatigue tests at various stress conditions highlight the material's significant variability in fatigue life and emphasize the need for reliable design approaches. This paper also demonstrates that internal defect size and location critically affect fatigue life, calling for improvements in forging inspection standards. Overall, the present study provides a comprehensive analysis of 30Cr2Ni4MoV steel's suitability for flywheel rotors, balancing safety, and operational efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structural changes that are induced by the initiation and the propagation of a crack in a lowdensity paper (LDP) were studied using single edgenotched fracture tests that were imaged under an optical microscope or in laboratory or synchrotron X-ray microtomographs. The two-dimensional optical images were used to analyse the links between the mesoscale structural variations of LDP and the crack path. Medium-resolution X-ray three-dimensional images were used to analyse the variations in the thickness and local porosity of samples as well as their displacement field that were induced by the LDP fracture. High-resolution three-dimensional images showed that these mesostructural variations were accompanied by complex fibre and bond deformation mechanisms that were, for the first time, in situ imaged. These mechanisms occurred in the fracture process zone that developed ahead of the crack tip before the crack path became distinct and visible. They were at the origin of the aforementioned thickness variations that developed more particularly along the crack path. They eventually led to fibre-fibre bond detachment phenomena and crack propagation through the fibrous network. The traditional finite element method (FEM) has limitations in accurately modeling crack propagation. Peridynamics, a nonlocal extension of the classical continuum theory, provides an alternative approach to remedy the limitations of the FEM but with a higher computational cost. In this paper, a peridynamic bond-based fatigue damage model is developed and incorporated into a commercial finite-element software (ABAQUS 2017) via user subroutines. Model-predicted results including the crack path spatial position and the damage accumulation rate were validated against empirical data. The predicted crack growth as a function of loading cycle and crack trajectory showed good agreement with the experimental data over 200,000 loading cycles. Therefore, the integration of the peridynamic bond-based fatigue damage model into existing FEM software provides an economical means to simulate complex fracture behaviors, such as crack growth, in a compact tension specimen examined in this paper. This paper presents a comprehensive finite element analysis (FEA) of pre-stressed Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) girders, showcasing intricate structural behaviors under various loading conditions. Utilizing advanced finite element modeling techniques, the study accurately simulates the flexural response of UHPC girders, integrating experimental results from large-scale laboratory tests conducted by researchers at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. This paper shows the effectiveness of simulating pre-stressing forces via initial equivalent temperature load with relatively accurate stress and strain predictions. The paper also delves into the moment–deflection relationships at critical stages, such as first concrete crack appearance, yielding, and strain localization, to capture the non-linear behavior of UHPC girders under pre-stressed conditions. Additionally, crack propagations were characterized by investigating the damage in tension (DAMAGET) plots. In summary, the results of the finite element model agree well with the experimental observations. Moreover, this study not only demonstrates the effectiveness of FEA in accurately simulating the complex structural behaviors of UHPC girders but also highlights its broader applicability to the design and analysis of other girder types, offering valuable insights compared to ordinary concrete beams. Freeze–thaw failure of frozen rock slope often occurs during engineering construction and mining in cold area, which poses a great threat to engineering construction and people's life safety. The properties of rock mass in cold region will change with the periodic change of temperature, which makes it difficult to accurately evaluate the stability of slope under the action of freeze–thaw cycle by conventional methods. Based on field investigation and literature review, this paper discusses the characteristics of frozen rock mass and the failure mechanism of frozen rock slope, and gives the types and failure modes of frozen rock slope. Then, the research status of frozen rock slope is analyzed. It is pointed out that the failure of frozen rock slope is the result of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling. It is considered that freeze–thaw cycle, rainfall infiltration and fracture propagation have significant effects on the stability of frozen rock slope, and numerical simulation is used to demonstrate. The research shows that the safety factor of frozen rock slope changes dynamically with the surface temperature, and the safety factor of slope decreases year by year with the increase of freeze–thaw cycles, and the fracture expansion will significantly reduce the safety factor. Based on the above knowledge, a time-varying evaluation method of frozen rock slope stability based on THM coupling theory is proposed. The concept of volume fracturing has revolutionized the conventional limits of low permeability, expanded the effective resource space, and significantly enhanced oil well production in tight oil reservoir development. This paper elucidates the mechanism of volume fracturing technology for tight sandstone reservoirs by considering multiple factors such as the initiation range of multi-fractures, influence of far-well horizontal principal stress on fracture initiation and propagation, degree of natural fractures development, and mechanical parameters of reservoir rock. Through simulation based on the mechanical parameters of reservoir rock, a comparative analysis was conducted between the model-calculated rock fracture pressure value and measured data from fracturing construction wells in the study area. The results revealed that there was a discrepancy within 10% between the model calculations and actual data. By simulating the effects of different injection volumes of fracturing fluid, pumping rates, and perforation methods on the fracture geometry, optimal design parameters for volume fracturing technology were obtained. Additionally, we propose optimization ideas and suggestions for construction parameters applicable to field operations. The simulation results indicate that a minimum recommended fluid volume scale exceeding 1800 m3 is advised for the reservoir. Based on frictional calculations, it is recommended to have an on-site construction rate not less than 18.0 m3/min along with 36–48 holes/section for perforation purposes. The numerical simulation research presented in this paper provides a theoretical reference basis and practical guidance for the application of fracturing network technology in tight sandstone reservoirs.
