This study is focused on identification of factors affecting the effectiveness of pandemic distance learning both on the side of students and teachers. The attention is devoted also to prevalence and perceived usefulness of the individual distance learning approaches and activities. We recruited 35 teachers of Czech language, German language, geography, mathematics, physics (seven per each subject). Questionnaires for teachers and students were developed on the basis of focus groups held with the teachers and an extensive literature search. 70 classes (two per each teacher) and more than 1400 students participated in the research. We found that preference to the online communication and attitudes towards distance learning among students are predictors of the effectiveness of distance learning. Sufficiently developed executive functions were also important for its managing. The perceived usefulness of individual activities by teachers and students strongly correlated with the prevalence of these activities during distance learning and the conventional approaches such as explanation of the learning content by teacher with shared screen were assessed as more useful than activities requiring higher level of activization of students (e.g. long-term project, group presentation). The findings presented here are a starting point for more in-depth going data analysis leading at the end to an onlineavailable screening tool which should help teachers to identify students who are in danger of lowered effectiveness during the distance learning.

Značná pozornost byla věnována nucenému přechodu na distanční vzdělávání v důsledku pandemie COVID-19. Některé aspekty této problematiky, které jsou pro praxi velmi důležité, jsou však stále nedostatečně prozkoumány. Cílem této studie je popsat vývoj on-line dostupného screeningového nástroje, který by mohl učitelům pomoci identifikovat studenty ohrožené sníženou efektivitou při distančním vzdělávání a také zvolit vhodný způsob výuky pro danou třídu. Byl proveden komplexní výzkum, kterého se zúčastnilo 35 učitelů českého jazyka, německého jazyka, matematiky, fyziky a zeměpisu a více než 1400 jejich studentů ze 70 tříd. V prvním kroku jsme identifikovali, které z více než 100 potenciálně relevantních proměnných mají prediktivní hodnotu pro efektivitu distančního vzdělávání. Následně byla vyvinuta řada multilineárních regresních modelů umožňujících kvantifikovat vliv jednotlivých proměnných na efektivitu a vnímanou užitečnost distančního vzdělávání. Moderační analýza byla použita k modelování toho, jak vhodné jsou synchronní a asynchronní aktivity založené na aktivním učení pro třídy s různými charakteristikami. Na základě výsledků modelů se vyvíjí jednoduchý screeningový nástroj, který učitelům pomůže přizpůsobit jejich přístup a strategii. Significant attention has been devoted to the forced switch to distance learning as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, some aspects of this issue that are very important for practice are still understudied. The aim of this study is to describe the development of an online-available screening tool which could help the teachers to identify the students at risk of lowered effectiveness during the distance learning and also to select an appropriate teaching approach for the given class. A complex survey involving 35 teachers of Czech language, German language, Mathematics, Physics and Geography, and more than 1400 of their students from 70 classes, was carried out. In the first step, we identified which out of the more than 100 potentially relevant variables have predictive value for the effectiveness of distance learning. Subsequently, a series of multilinear regression models enabling to quantify the impact of the individual variables on effectiveness and perceived usefulness of distance learning were developed. Moderation analysis was also used to model how suitable synchronous and asynchronous activities based on active learning are for classes with different characteristics. Based on the results of the models, a simple screening tool helping teachers to tailor their approach and strategy is being developed.

Probíhající pandemie covid-19 ovlivňuje od jara 2020 významným způsobem vzdělávání po celém světě, a to především z důvodu nucených uzávěr školy a následného přechodu na distanční výuku. Cílem prezentované přehledové studie je shrnout aktuální poznatky ohledně efektivity této distanční výuky globálně a specificky v kontextu České republiky. Některé metodologické aspekty problematiky související hlavně s klíčovým konceptem učebních ztrát (learning loss) jsou diskutovány s ohledem na dřívější výzkum o efektivitě distančního vzdělávání před pandemií. V závěrečné části je představen náš přístup k výzkumu tohoto fenoménu založený na komplexní evaluaci. V ní bereme v úvahu to, jak vnímají efektivitu různých forem distanční výuky učitelé a žáci, stejně jako specifika různých předmětů (český jazyk, fyzika, matematika, německý jazyk a zeměpis). The aim of the presented review study is to summarize recent findings regarding effectiveness of such distance learning worldwide and specifically in the Czech Republic. Some methodological issues connected mainly with the key concept of learning loss are discussed with respect to previous research on effectiveness of distance learning before pandemic. Our research approach to this topic is based on complex evaluation and takes into account the effectiveness of different forms of distance learning as perceived by both teachers and learners. We also take into consideration specifics of various subjects (Czech language, German language, geography, mathematics, and physics).
