The China Surgery and Anaesthesia Cohort (CSAC) study was launched in July 2020 and is an ongoing prospective cohort study recruiting patients aged 40-65 years who underwent elective surgeries with general anaesthesia across four medical centres in China. The general objective of the CSAC study is to improve our understanding of the complex interaction between environmental and genetic components as well as to determine their effects on a wide range of interested surgery/anaesthesia-related outcomes. To achieve this goal, we collected enriched phenotypic data, e.g., sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, perioperative neuropsychological changes, anaesthesia- and surgery-related complications, and medical conditions, at recruitment, as well as through both active (at 1, 3, 7 days and 1, 3, 6, 12 months after surgery) and passive (for more than 1 year after surgery) follow-up assessments. We also obtained omics data from blood samples. In addition, COVID-19-related information was collected from all participants since January 2023, immediately after COVID-19 restrictions were eased in China. As of July 18, 2023, 12,766 participants (mean age = 52.40 years, 57.93% were female) completed baseline data collection (response rate = 94.68%), among which approximately 70% donated blood and hair samples. The follow-up rates within 12 months after surgery were > 92%. Our initial analyses have demonstrated the incidence of and risk factors for chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) among middle-aged Chinese individuals, which may prompt further mechanistic exploration and facilitate the development of effective interventions for preventing those conditions. The rapid advancement of modern technology has significantly driven progress in various IT-related activities, resulting in a substantial increase in internet penetration rates, particularly among college students. The utilization of the internet has become one of the most essential tools in our modern society. However, internet addiction (IA) has emerged as a serious concern, particularly among college students, adversely affecting academic performance and having significant psychological and psychiatric implications. The aim of the current study was to determine the impact of physical exercise, gender and academic year on IA among college students. In the present study, we investigated internet usage, engagement in sports activities, and academic performance among college students from Western, Middle, and Eastern regions of Chinese universities. It's noteworthy that most of the respondents were freshmen. Our findings indicate that freshmen students were more susceptible to experiencing IA. Approximately 75% of students engaged in leisure sports activities, revealing an inverse correlation between sports activity and IA. This correlation aligns with the level of sports involvement, emphasizing the potential benefits of physical activity in mitigating IA. However, our study did not uncover any correlation between geographic location and the occurrence of IA, nor did it find differences between medical and non-medical students. Furthermore, our study revealed no significant variations in IA among students from different ethnic backgrounds. The underlying mechanism of IA is being currently determined. Background: To combat/control the COVID-19 pandemic, a complete lockdown was implemented in China for almost 6 months during 2020., Purpose: To determine the impact of a long-term lockdown on the academic performance of first-year nursing students via mandatory online learning, and to determine the benefits of online teaching., Methods: The recruitment and academic performance of 1st-year nursing students were assessed between 2019 [prior to COVID-19, n = 195, (146 women)] and 2020 [during COVID-19, n = 180 (142 women)]. The independent sample t test or Mann-Whitney test was applied for a comparison between these two groups., Results: There was no significant difference in student recruitment between 2019 and 2020. The overall performance of the first-year students improved in the Biochemistry, Immunopathology, Traditional Chinese Medicine Nursing and Combined Nursing courses via mandatory online teaching in 2020 compared with traditional teaching in 2019., Conclusion: Suspension of in-class learning but continuing education virtually online has occurred without negatively impacting academic performance, thus academic goals are more than achievable in a complete lockdown situation. This study offers firm evidence to forge a path for developments in teaching methods to better incorporate virtual learning and technology in order to adapt to fast-changing environments. Serious concerns have been raised about the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on population psychological well-being. However, limited data exist on the long-term effects of the pandemic on incident psychiatric morbidities among individuals with varying exposure to the pandemic. Leveraging prospective data from the community-based UK Biobank cohort, we included 308,400 participants free of diagnosis of anxiety or depression, as well as 213,757 participants free of anxiolytics or antidepressants prescriptions, to explore the trends in incident diagnoses and drug prescriptions for anxiety and depression from 16 March 2020 to 31 August 2021, compared to the pre-pandemic period (i.e., 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2019) and across populations with different exposure statuses (i.e., not tested for COVID-19, tested negative and tested positive). The age- and sex-standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated by month which indicated an increase in incident diagnoses of anxiety or depression among individuals who were tested for COVID-19 (tested negative: SIR 3.05 [95% confidence interval 2.88-3.22]; tested positive: 2.03 [1.76-2.34]), especially during the first six months of the pandemic (i.e., March-September 2020). Similar increases were also observed for incident prescriptions of anxiolytics or antidepressants (tested negative: 1.56 [1.47-1.67]; tested positive: 1.41 [1.22-1.62]). In contrast, individuals not tested for COVID-19 had consistently lower incidence rates of both diagnoses of anxiety or depression (0.70 [0.67-0.72]) and prescriptions of respective psychotropic medications (0.70 [0.68-0.72]) during the pandemic period. These data suggest a distinct rise in health care needs for anxiety and depression among individuals tested for COVID-19, regardless of the test result, in contrast to a reduction in health care consumption for these disorders among individuals not tested for and, presumably, not directly exposed to the disease., (© 2023. Objective: To assess the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on cardiovascular disease (CVD) related mortality and hospitalisation., Design: Community-based prospective cohort study., Setting: The UK Biobank., Participants: 421 372 UK Biobank participants who were registered in England and alive as of 1 January 2020., Primary and Secondary Outcome Measures: The primary outcome of interest was CVD-related death, which was defined as death with CVD as a cause in the death register. We retrieved information on hospitalisations with CVD as the primary diagnosis from the UK Biobank hospital inpatient data. The study period was 1 January 2020 to June 30 2020, and we used the same calendar period of the three preceding years as the reference period. In order to control for seasonal variations and ageing of the study population, standardised mortality/incidence ratios (SMRs/SIRs) with 95% CIs were used to estimate the relative risk of CVD outcomes during the study period, compared with the reference period., Results: We observed a distinct increase in CVD-related deaths in March and April 2020, compared with the corresponding months of the three preceding years. The observed number of CVD-related deaths (n=218) was almost double in April, compared with the expected number (n=120) (SMR=1.82, 95% CI 1.58 to 2.07). In addition, we observed a significant decline in CVD-related hospitalisations from March onwards, with the lowest SIR observed in April (0.45, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.49)., Conclusions: There was a distinct increase in the number of CVD-related deaths in the UK Biobank population at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. The shortage of medical resources for hospital care and stress reactions to the pandemic might have partially contributed to the excess CVD-related mortality, underscoring the need of sufficient healthcare resources and improved instructions to the public about seeking healthcare in a timely way., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared., (© Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2021. Assessing pulmonary lesions using computed tomography (CT) images is of great significance to the severity diagnosis and treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-infected patients. Such assessment mainly depends on radiologists' subjective judgment, which is inefficient and presents difficulty for those with low levels of experience, especially in rural areas. This work focuses on developing a radiomics signature to quantitatively analyze whether COVID-19-infected pulmonary lesions are mild (Grade I) or moderate/severe (Grade II). We retrospectively analyzed 1160 COVID-19-infected pulmonary lesions from 16 hospitals. First, texture features were extracted from the pulmonary lesion regions of CT images. Then, feature preselection was performed and a radiomics signature was built using a stepwise logistic regression. The stepwise logistic regression also calculated the correlation between the radiomics signature and the grade of a pulmonary lesion. Finally, a logistic regression model was trained to classify the grades of pulmonary lesions. Given a significance level of α = 0.001, the stepwise logistic regression achieved an R (multiple correlation coefficient) of 0.70, which is much larger than R α  = 0.18 (the critical value of R). In the classification, the logistic regression model achieved an AUC of 0.87 on an independent test set. Overall, the radiomics signature is significantly correlated with the grade of a pulmonary lesion in COVID-19 infection. The classification model is interpretable and can assist radiologists in quickly and efficiently diagnosing pulmonary lesions. This work aims to develop a CT-based radiomics signature to quantitatively analyze whether COVID-19-infected pulmonary lesions are mild (Grade I) or moderate/severe (Grade II). The logistic regression model established based on this radiomics signature can assist radiologists to quickly and efficiently diagnose the grades of pulmonary lesions. The model calculates a radiomics score for a lesion and is interpretable and appropriate for clinical use.

Aims: To investigate the eosinophil cell (EC) expression in peripheral blood of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) and its clinical significance of diagnosis and prognosis., Methods: 95 patients, whose nucleic acid test of SARS-CoV-2 was positive to make a definite diagnosis of COVID-19, were selected as the study group. They were admitted at the Chengdu Public Health Clinical Medical Center from January 21 to March 2, 2020. Another 95 healthy subjects and 95 non-infectious fever patients during the same period were selected as the control group. The BC-6900 blood cell analyzer was used to continuously observe and detect ECs in 95 patients with COVID-19 and the control group. The differences in expression levels of ECs in peripheral blood were analyzed., Results: ECs were significantly decreased in 95 (75.8%) COVID-19 patients (P < .01). The absolute EC count IQR was 0.01 × 10⁹/L (0 × 10⁹/L - 0.04 × 10⁹/L), and the EC percentage IQR was 0.3% (0.1% - 0.8%). As the patients' condition improved, the ECs returned to normal, but for those without improvement, ECs continued to decline., Conclusions: ECs decreased remarkably in patients with COVID-19, and gradually returned to normal after the improvement of the patients' condition, while EC continued to decrease in patients without improvement. It is suggested that ECs have certain clinical significance in the diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19, and may be a useful index in the early warning of acute infectious diseases., (© 2020 The Authors.
