Background: Chagas Disease (CD) can cause Chagas cardiomyopathy. The new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) also affects the cardiovascular system and may worsen Chagas cardiomyopathy. However, the cardiac evolution of patients with CD infected by COVID-19 is not known. Thus, the objective of this study is to assess, within one year, whether there was cardiac progression after COVID-19 in CD., Methods: Longitudinal study with CD patients. The outcome was cardiac progression, defined as the appearance of new major changes in the current ECG compared to the previous ECG considered from the comparison of electrocardiograms (ECGs) performed with an interval of one year. Positive Anti-SARS-CoV2 Serology was the independent variable of interest. For each analysis, a final multiple model was constructed, adjusted for sociodemographic, clinical, and pandemic-related characteristics., Results: Of the 404 individuals included, 22.8 % had positive serology for COVID-19 and 10.9 % had cardiac progression. In the final model, positive serology for COVID-19 was the only factor associated with cardiac progression in the group as a whole (OR = 2.65; 95 % CI = 1.27-5.53) and for new-onset cardiomyopathy in the group with normal previous ECG (OR = 3.50; 95 % CI = 1.21-10.13)., Conclusion: Our study shows an association between COVID-19 and progression of Chagas cardiomyopathy, evaluated by repeated ECGs, suggesting that COVID-19 accelerated the natural history of CD., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Introduction: Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) affected the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and its impact on well-being is not sufficiently understood yet. The worsening of HRQoL and symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, depression, chronic Headache, Myalgia, ageusia, olfactory disorders, and cognitive impairment can be seen in people of different ages and genders after COVID-19 infection, even mild infections without hospitalization. These issues generate a disease burden that can reduce work skills and cause social, psychological, and neuropsychiatric challenges., Objective: To evaluate the HRQoL of patients affected by COVID-19, the domains most affected, and their relationship with fatigue, anxiety, depression, chronic Headache and Myalgia, ageusia, olfactory disorders, and cognitive impairment., Methods: An analytical transverse was conducted with 143 patients after COVID-19 infection. The patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMS) were collected by the 36-item Short Form survey (SF-36), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Mini-Mental State Examination-2 (MMSE-2), Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and a questionnaire regarding symptoms such as chronic Headache, myalgia, and olfactory disorders. Spearman's correlation test was used to correlate the performance of the patients on different PROMS., Results: Fatigue, depression, and anxiety were negatively correlated with all the SF-36 domains, and patients with subjective cognitive complaints had low scores in all SF-36 domains. Furthermore, those with chronic Headaches had low scores in physical functioning, role-physical functioning, and vitality. Regarding myalgia complaints, the worst scores were observed in the physical functioning and vitality domains. Patients with ageusia had low scores in general health perceptions, and those with olfactory dysfunction had low scores in the vitality and mental health domains., Conclusions: Although the acute phase of COVID-19 has resolved, knowledge about HRQoL after this period is essential since many individual and collective changes have been taking place until today-patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations that persisted after the acute phase showed lower overall quality of life., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no competing interests., (Copyright © 2024. Objective: To assess maternal mortality (MM) in Brazilian Black, Pardo, and White women., Methods: We evaluated the maternal mortality rate (MMR) using data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health public databases from 2017 to 2022. We compared MMR among Black, Pardo, and White women according to the region of the country, age, and cause. For statistical analysis, the Q2 test prevalence ratio (PR) and confidence interval (CI) were calculated., Results: From 2017 to 2022, the general MMR was 68.0/100,000 live births (LB). The MMR was almost twice as high among Black women compared to White (125.81 vs 64.15, PR = 1.96, 95%CI:1.84-2.08) and Pardo women (125.8 vs 64.0, PR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.85-2.09). MMR was higher among Black women in all geographical regions, and the Southeast region reached the highest difference among Black and White women (115.5 versus 60.8, PR = 2.48, 95%CI: 2.03-3.03). During the covid-19 pandemic, MMR increased in all groups of women (Black 144.1, Pardo 74.8 and White 80.5/100.000 LB), and the differences between Black and White (PR = 1.79, 95%CI: 1.64-1.95) and Black and Pardo (PR = 1.92, 95%CI: 1.77-2.09) remained. MMR was significantly higher among Black women than among White or Pardo women in all age ranges and for all causes., Conclusion: Black women presented higher MMR in all years, in all geographic regions, age groups, and causes. In Brazil, Black skin color is a key MM determinant. Reducing MM requires reducing racial disparities.

Objective: To describe situations of violence against women in the Covid-19 pandemic reported in the media., Method: Documentary, qualitative research, in a virtual environment, carried out with 39 reports published in the newspaper O Globo and the Universo On-line portal, between March 2020 and July 2021, in Salvador - BA. Data organization followed the steps of content analysis, with a discussion based on the scientific literature., Results: In the analysis process, four core meanings were organized: social isolation denounces situations of domestic violence; Economic crisis and closed doors: justify more violence?; Tools available for ending violence against women: what changes with the pandemic?; The gender and color of violence in the pandemic., Final Considerations: The media released alarming data on the intensification and susceptibility of women to different types and situations of violence, especially during social isolation, in the Covid-19 pandemic.

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze cognitive impairment associated with long-term coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) syndrome and its correlation with anxiety, depression, and fatigue in patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 127 patients with COVID-19. Tests to screen for neuropsychiatric symptoms included the Fatigue Severity Scale, Mini-Mental State Exam 2 (MMSE-2), Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale., Results: In cognitive tests, SDMT was abnormal in 22%, being more sensitive than MMSE-2 to detect cognitive changes. Furthermore, although manifestations such as fatigue, depression, and anxiety were frequent in the post-COVID-19 phase, these 3 conditions, known to contribute to cognitive impairment, were slightly correlated with worse performance on the rapid screening tests., Conclusions: In patients with mild COVID-19 and cognitive complaints, SDMT helped to confirm disturbances in the attention domain and processing speed., (© The Author(s) 2022. Individuals affected by COVID-19 have an alteration in autonomic balance, associated with impaired cardiac parasympathetic modulation and, consequently, a decrease in heart rate variability (HRV). This study examines the inter- and intrarater reliability of HRV) parameters derived from short-term recordings in individuals post-COVID. Sixty-nine participants of both genders post-COVID were included. The RR interval, the time elapsed between two successive R-waves of the QRS signal on the electrocardiogram (RRi), were recorded during a 10 min period in a supine position using a portable heart rate monitor (Polar ® V800 model). The data were transferred into Kubios ® HRV standard analysis software and analyzed within the stable sessions containing 256 sequential RRi. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) ranged from 0.920 to 1.000 according to the intrarater analysis by Researcher 01 and 0.959 to 0.999 according to the intrarater by Researcher 02. The interrater ICC ranged from 0.912 to 0.998. The coefficient of variation was up to 9.23 for Researcher 01 intrarater analysis, 6.96 for Researcher 02 intrarater analysis and 8.83 for interrater analysis. The measurement of HRV in post-COVID-19 individuals is reliable and presents a small amount of error inherent to the method, supporting its use in the clinical environment and in scientific research.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 is closely associated with multimorbidities. This study aimed to review the clinical and functional conditions of patients who recovered from COVID-19. Additionally, identify the relationship with risk factors and comorbidities. Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) was more frequently observed in patients with severe COVID-19. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the comorbidities that has contributed the most to the increase in the number of hospitalizations due to complications and the number of deaths due to infection by COVID-19. Obesity has been shown to be a risk factor for hospitalization in patients with COVID-19 under 60 years of age. Most survivors of COVID-19 suffer primarily from muscle fatigue or weakness. In addition, patients who were more seriously ill during their hospital stay have greater impairment of functional capacity, pulmonary diffusion and fatigue symptoms, and are the main target population for long-term recovery interventions. To optimize the post-hospitalization rehabilitation of patients after discharge from COVID-19, the need for multidisciplinary work in rehabilitation, the reinforcement of public policies to ensure equity in access to the public health system and training should be considered of the health team in view of the new demands and realities generated by COVID-19.

Olfactory dysfunction is reported frequently in patients with coronavirus disease 2019. However, an effective treatment for this dysfunction is unknown. The present study evaluated carbamazepine as a treatment option for olfactory dysfunction based on its use in cases of neuralgia, especially of the V cranial nerve. The study included 10 patients with coronavirus disease with olfactory complaints who were part of a cohort of 172 coronavirus disease patients monitored for late neurological manifestations. Carbamazepine was administered for 11 weeks. The adverse effects reported were drowsiness (9/10) and dizziness (2/10); 9 of the 10 patients reported improved olfactory function after carbamazepine treatment. While the role of carbamazepine in the control of post-coronavirus disease olfactory dysfunction could not be confirmed in this study, the satisfactory response observed in most patients in this series suggests that further studies are warranted., (© 2022. Underlying mechanisms on the association between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and neurologic complications are still poorly understood. Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been linked to the SARS-CoV-2 infection as the result of dysregulated immune response with damage in neuronal tissues. In the current report, we present the first pediatric case of GBS with detection of SARS-CoV-2 in the cerebrospinal fluid (CFS). Background: There is growing concern about individuals reported to suffer repeat COVID-19 disease episodes, these in a small number of cases characterised as de novo infections with distinct sequences, indicative of insufficient protective immunity even in the short term., Methods: Observational case series and case-control studies reporting 33 cases of recurrent, symptomatic, qRT-PCR positive COVID-19. Recurrent disease was defined as symptomatic recurrence after symptom-free clinical recovery, with release from isolation >14 days from the beginning of symptoms confirmed by qRT-PCR. The case control study-design compared this group of patients with a control group of 62 patients randomly selected from the same COVID-19 database., Results: Of 33 recurrent COVID-19 patients, 26 were female and 30 were HCW. Mean time to recurrence was 50.5 days which was associated with being a HCW (OR 36.4 (p <0.0001)), and blood type A (OR 4.8 (p = 0.002)). SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were signifcantly lower in recurrent patients after initial COVID-19  (2.4 ± 0.610; p<0.0001) and after recurrence (6.4 ± 11.34; p = 0.007).  Virus genome sequencing identified reinfection by a different isolate in one patient., Conclusions: This is the first detailed case series showing COVID-19 recurrence with qRT-PCR positivity. For one individual detection of phylogenetically distinct genomic sequences in the first and second episodes confirmed bona fide renfection, but in most cases the data do not formally distinguish between reinfection and re-emergence of a chronic infection reservoir.
