Vaccines are the most effective tool against COVID-19 and are generally safe. Very rare and heterogeneous cases of acute liver injury associated to all types of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines have been reported, mostly with autoimmune features. Epidemiological studies used heterogeneous diagnostic criteria and included different populations. Immunological studies in selected cases of acute liver injury linked to mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccines suggest that it has a unique pathophysiology, the vaccine-encoded spike protein playing a central role in triggering the aberrant immune response. In most series, liver injury was observed more often following the second vaccine dose. Latency from vaccination to the diagnosis of hepatitis was 1-147 days after the last vaccine dose. Raised immunoglobulin G levels and positive anti-nuclear and/or anti-smooth muscle antibodies are frequent. The vast majority of reported cases have been treated with corticosteroids, mostly associated with azathioprine. Outcome is generally favourable, but cases requiring liver transplantation or causing death have been reported. The heterogeneous clinical entity of acute liver injury linked to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines includes patients requiring long-term immunosuppression, similarly to autoimmune hepatitis, and patients with self-limiting liver damage, possibly representing a unique form of autoimmune-like hepatitis, which we suggest being referred to as SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-associated liver injury (SVALI). Background: The World Health Organization is committed to strengthening access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention and its integration into primary care services. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the delivery of primary care, including HIV-related services. To determine the extent of this disruption, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the changes in access to PrEP services during the pandemic and the reasons for these changes., Methods: A search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Embase, PsycINFO, and Cinahl for studies published between January 2020 and January 2023. Selected articles described self-reported disruptions to PrEP service access associated with the COVID-19 pandemic or its responses. Pooled effect sizes were computed using a random-effects model., Results: Thirteen studies involving 12,652 PrEP users were included in our analysis. The proportion of participants reporting a disruption in access to PrEP services during the COVID-19 pandemic ranged from 3% to 56%, with a pooled proportion of 21% (95% confidence intervals: 8% to 38%). Social restrictions, financial constraints, and limited health insurance coverage were key factors affecting access to PrEP services during the pandemic., Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis to quantify the extent of disruptions to accessing PrEP services because of the COVID-19 pandemic. To increase the ability of primary care services to maintain PrEP services during public health crises, a mixture of strategies is worth considering. SARS-CoV-2 mediated infection instigated a scary pandemic state since 2019. They created havoc comprising death, imbalanced social structures, and a wrecked global economy. During infection, the inflammation and associated cytokine storm generate a critical pathological situation in the human body, especially in the lungs. By the passage of time of infection, inflammatory disorders, and multiple organ damage happen which might lead to death, if not treated properly. Until now, many pathological parameters have been used to understand the progress of the severity of COVID-19 but with limited success. Bioactive lipid mediators have the potential of initiating and resolving inflammation in any disease. The connection between lipid storm and inflammatory states of SARS-CoV-2 infection has surfaced and got importance to understand and mitigate the pathological states of COVID-19. As the role of eicosanoids in COVID-19 infection is not well defined, available information regarding this issue has been accumulated to address the possible network of eicosanoids related to the initiation of inflammation, promotion of cytokine storm, and resolution of inflammation, and highlight possible strategies for treatment and drug discovery related to SARS-CoV-2 infection in this study. Understanding the involvement of eicosanoids in exploration of cellular events provoked by SARS-CoV-2 infection has been summarized as an important factor to deescalate any upcoming catastrophe imposed by the lethal variants of this micro-monster. The COVID-19 pandemic has induced significant impairments, including sleep disturbances. The present study aimed to explore the impact of fear in relation to stress on sleep disorders among Italian adults and older participants in the second phase of the EPICOVID19 web-based survey (January-February 2021). Sleep disturbances during the pandemic were evaluated using the Jenkins Sleep Scale, perceived stress through the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale and fear of contagion and about economic and job situation with four ad hoc items. The strength of the pathways between stress, sleep disturbances and fear was explored using structural equation modelling, hypothesising that stress was related to sleep disturbances and that fear was associated with both stress and sleep problems. Out of 41,473 participants (74.7% women; mean age 49.7 ± 13.1 years), 8.1% reported sleep disturbances and were more frequently women, employed in a work category at risk of infection or unemployed, and showed higher deprivation scores. Considering an a priori hypotheses model defining sleep and stress scores as endogenous variables and fear as an exogenous variable, we found that fear was associated with sleep problems and stress, and stress was associated with sleep problems; almost half of the total impact of fear on sleep quality was mediated by stress. The impact of stress on sleep quality was more evident in the younger age group, among individuals with a lower socioeconomic status and healthcare workers. Objective: This study was undertaken to characterize changes in health care utilization and mortality for people with epilepsy (PWE) during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: We performed a retrospective study using linked, individual-level, population-scale anonymized health data from the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage databank. We identified PWE living in Wales during the study "pandemic period" (January 1, 2020-June 30, 2021) and during a "prepandemic" period (January 1, 2016-December 31, 2019). We compared prepandemic health care utilization, status epilepticus, and mortality rates with corresponding pandemic rates for PWE and people without epilepsy (PWOE). We performed subgroup analyses on children (<18 years old), older people (>65 years old), those with intellectual disability, and those living in the most deprived areas. We used Poisson models to calculate adjusted rate ratios (RRs)., Results: We identified 27 279 PWE who had significantly higher rates of hospital (50.3 visits/1000 patient months), emergency department (55.7), and outpatient attendance (172.4) when compared to PWOE (corresponding figures: 25.7, 25.2, and 87.0) in the prepandemic period. Hospital and epilepsy-related hospital admissions, and emergency department and outpatient attendances all reduced significantly for PWE (and all subgroups) during the pandemic period. RRs [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] for pandemic versus prepandemic periods were .70 [.69-.72], .77 [.73-.81], .78 [.77-.79], and .80 [.79-.81]. The corresponding rates also reduced for PWOE. New epilepsy diagnosis rates decreased during the pandemic compared with the prepandemic period (2.3/100 000/month cf. 3.1/100 000/month, RR = .73, 95% CI = .68-.78). Both all-cause deaths and deaths with epilepsy recorded on the death certificate increased for PWE during the pandemic (RR = 1.07, 95% CI = .997-1.145 and RR = 2.44, 95% CI = 2.12-2.81). When removing COVID deaths, RRs were .88 (95% CI = .81-.95) and 1.29 (95% CI = 1.08-1.53). Status epilepticus rates did not change significantly during the pandemic (RR = .95, 95% CI = .78-1.15)., Significance: All-cause non-COVID deaths did not increase but non-COVID deaths associated with epilepsy did increase for PWE during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a relatively uncommon but severe pediatric complication, is associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A variety of treatment approaches, including intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIGs), glucocorticoids (GCs) and biologic agents, such as anakinra and infliximab, have been described for the management of COVID-19-related MIS-C. Anticoagulant therapy is also important. However, a well-developed treatment system has not been established, and many issues remain controversial. Several recently published articles related to the treatment of MIS-C have been released. Hence, in this review, we identified relevant articles published recently and summarized the treatment of MIS-C more comprehensively and systematically., Data Sources: We reviewed the literature on the treatment of MIS-C through 20 September 2023. The PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched with the combination of the terms "multisystem inflammatory syndrome", "MIS-C", "PIMS-TS", "therapy", "treatment", "drug", "IVIG", "GCs", "intravenous immunoglobulin", "corticosteroids", "biological agent", and "aspirin"., Results: The severity of MIS-C varies, and different treatment schemes should be used according to the specific condition. Ongoing research and data collection are vital to better understand the pathophysiology and optimal management of MIS-C., Conclusions: MIS-C is a disease involving multiple systems and has great heterogeneity. With the accumulation of additional experience, we have garnered fresh insights into its treatment strategies. However, there remains a critical need for greater standardization in treatment protocols, alongside the pressing necessity for more robust and meticulously conducted studies to deepen our understanding of these protocols. Adults with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) have increased risk of severe clinical presentation during COVID-19 infection, while children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have the same mild clinical course as their healthy peers, especially those with optimal glycemic control. The present review focuses on the necessity of COVID-19 vaccination among children and adolescents with T1D, and also in their non-diabetic peers. The efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines are also discussed, as well as their various side-effects, ranging from common mild to very rare and serious ones. Furthermore, the results of COVID-19 vaccination of adolescents with and without T1D are reported, as well as the efficacy and concerns about childhood vaccination. It is concluded that patients with DM of all age groups should maintain optimal diabetic control in order to avoid glycemic deterioration during COVID-19 infection. Furthermore, despite the very rare and serious complications of COVID-19 vaccines, vaccination against COVID-19 is recommended for children and adolescents with T1D to prevent glycemic deterioration and rare but serious complications of COVID-19 infection., (© 2023. Telehealth services, specifically telemedicine audio-video and audio-only patient encounters, expanded dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic through temporary waivers and flexibilities tied to the public health emergency. Early studies demonstrate significant potential to advance the quintuple aim (patient experience, health outcomes, cost, clinician well-being, and equity). Supported well, telemedicine can particularly improve patient satisfaction, health outcomes, and equity. Implemented poorly, telemedicine can facilitate unsafe care, worsen disparities, and waste resources. Without further action from lawmakers and agencies, payment will end for many telemedicine services currently used by millions of Americans at the end of 2024. Policymakers, health systems, clinicians, and educators must decide how to support, implement, and sustain telemedicine, and long-term studies and clinical practice guidelines are emerging to provide direction. In this position statement, we use clinical vignettes to review relevant literature and highlight where key actions are needed. These include areas where telemedicine must be expanded (e.g., to support chronic disease management) and where guidelines are needed (e.g., to prevent inequitable offering of telemedicine services and prevent unsafe or low-value care). We provide policy, clinical practice, and education recommendations for telemedicine on behalf of the Society of General Internal Medicine. Policy recommendations include ending geographic and site restrictions, expanding the definition of telemedicine to include audio-only services, establishing appropriate telemedicine service codes, and expanding broadband access to all Americans. Clinical practice recommendations include ensuring appropriate telemedicine use (for limited acute care situations or in conjunction with in-person services to extend longitudinal care relationships), that the choice of modality be done through patient-clinician shared decision-making, and that health systems design telemedicine services through community partnerships to ensure equitable implementation. Education recommendations include developing telemedicine-specific educational strategies for trainees that align with accreditation body competencies and providing educators with protected time and faculty development resources., (© 2023. To investigate the relationship between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and the risk of mortality among coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients based on adjusted effect estimate by a quantitative meta-analysis. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled effect size (ES) with corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). I 2 statistic, sensitivity analysis, Begg's test, meta-regression and subgroup analyses were also conducted. This meta-analysis presented that HIV infection was associated with a significantly higher risk of COVID-19 mortality based on 40 studies reporting risk factors-adjusted effects with 131,907,981 cases (pooled ES 1.43, 95% CI 1.25-1.63). Subgroup analyses by male proportion and setting yielded consistent results on the significant association between HIV infection and the increased risk of COVID-19 mortality. Allowing for the existence of heterogeneity, further meta-regression and subgroup analyses were conducted to seek the possible source of heterogeneity. None of factors might be possible reasons for heterogeneity in the further analyses. Sensitivity analysis indicated the robustness of this meta-analysis. The Begg's test manifested that there was no publication bias (P = 0.2734). Our findings demonstrated that HIV infection was independently associated with a significantly increased risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients. Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a global public health crisis and profoundly impacted acute treatment delivery. This study conducted long-term evaluations of the impact of the pandemic on acute stroke management., Methods: Data from a university-owned medical facility in Tokyo, Japan, were retrospectively analyzed. The number of hospital admissions for stroke and time metrics in the management of patients with acute ischemic stroke were evaluated. A year-over-year comparison was conducted using data from April 2019 to December 2021 to assess the impact of the pandemic., Results: The year-over-year comparison demonstrated that the number of admissions of patients with stroke and patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA), and thrombectomy during the pandemic remained comparable to the pre-COVID data. However, we found a decrease in the number of admissions of patients with stroke alerts and stroke when hospital cluster infection occurred at this facility and when the region hosted the Tokyo Olympics games during the surge of infection. The door-to-computed tomography time in 2021 was affected. This is plausibly due to the reorganization of in-hospital stroke care pathways after hospital cluster infection. However, no significant difference was observed in the onset-to-door, door-to-MRI, door-to-needle, or door-to-groin puncture times., Conclusions: We did not observe long-term detrimental effects of the pandemic at this site. The past several decades have witnessed the emergence and re-emergence of many infectious viral agents, flaviviruses, influenza, filoviruses, alphaviruses, and coronaviruses since the advent of human deficiency virus (HIV). Some of them even become serious threats to public health and have raised major global health concerns. Several different medicinal compounds such as anti-viral, anti-malarial, and anti-inflammatory agents, are under investigation for the treatment of these viral diseases. These therapies are effective improving recovery rates and overall survival of patients but are unable to heal lung damage caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Therefore, there is a critical need to identify effective treatments to combat this unmet clinical need. Due to its antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, stem cell therapy is considered a novel approach to regenerate damaged lungs and reduce inflammation. Stem cell therapy uses a heterogeneous subset of regenerative cells that can be harvested from various adult tissue types and is gaining popularity due to its prodigious regenerative potential as well as immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. These cells retain expression of cluster of differentiation markers (CD markers), interferon-stimulated gene (ISG), reduce expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and, show a rapid proliferation rate, which makes them an attractive tool for cellular therapies and to treat various inflammatory and viral-induced injuries. COVID-19 has disrupted sexual behaviour and access to health systems. We adapted regular HIV behavioural surveillance of gay and bisexual men (GBM) in Australia in response to COVID-19, assessed the impact on the profile of the sample, the participants' HIV-related behaviour, and whether COVID-19 may have accentuated existing disparities in the Australian HIV epidemic. Data collected from five states during July 2017-June 2021 were included (N = 31,460). The emphasis on online recruitment after COVID-19 led to smaller sample sizes, greater geographic reach, and a higher proportion of bisexual-identifying participants. Most participants (88.1%) reported physical distancing and 52.1% had fewer sex partners due to COVID-19. In the COVID-19-affected rounds (July 2020-June 2021), the number of male partners, recent HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use all fell, and HIV risk among the smaller group of participants who reported casual sex increased. COVID-related changes were generally more pronounced among GBM aged under 25 years, participants from suburbs with fewer gay residents, and bisexual men. Minority groups may face additional barriers to vaccination. In April-June 2021, we assessed the level of COVID-19 vaccination and willingness to be vaccinated in a national, online survey of 1280 gay and bisexual men in Australia. Over a quarter of the sample (28.0%) had been partially or fully vaccinated, and 80.0% of the unvaccinated were willing to be vaccinated. Vaccination was independently associated with older age, being university educated, and HIV status (with HIV-positive participants being more likely and untested participants less likely to be vaccinated). Willingness to be vaccinated was independently associated with living in a capital city and being university educated. Those who had lost income or their job due to COVID-19 were less willing to be vaccinated. During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the COVIDiSTRESS Consortium launched an open-access global survey to understand and improve individuals' experiences related to the crisis. A year later, we extended this line of research by launching a new survey to address the dynamic landscape of the pandemic. This survey was released with the goal of addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion by working with over 150 researchers across the globe who collected data in 48 languages and dialects across 137 countries. The resulting cleaned dataset described here includes 15,740 of over 20,000 responses. The dataset allows cross-cultural study of psychological wellbeing and behaviours a year into the pandemic. It includes measures of stress, resilience, vaccine attitudes, trust in government and scientists, compliance, and information acquisition and misperceptions regarding COVID-19. Open-access raw and cleaned datasets with computed scores are available. The inflammatory process is a biological response of the organism to remove injurious stimuli and initiate homeostasis. It has been recognized as a key player in the most severe forms of SARS-CoV-2, characterized by significantly increased pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, the so-called "cytokine storm" that appears to play a pivotal role in this disease. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to select clinical trials with anti-inflammatory plants and relate the activity of these plants to inflammatory markers of SARS-CoV-2 infection. PRISMA guidelines are followed, and studies of interest are indexed in PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov databases. As a result, 32 clinical trials encompassing 22 plants were selected. The main anti-inflammatory mechanisms described in the studies are the inhibition of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, TNF-a, IFN-γ, and IL-1; decreased CRP and oxidative marker levels; increased endogenous antioxidant levels; modulation of cardiovascular risk markers. The data found are not directly related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, they provide possibilities for new studies as plants have a wide array of phytochemicals, and detecting which ones are responsible for anti-inflammatory effects can provide invaluable contribution to studies aiming to evaluate efficacy in scenarios of SARS-CoV-2 infection., (© 2022. Platelet aggregation has been associated with COVID-19 pathogenesis. In older patients hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, we aimed to investigate the association between aspirin use before admission and the risk of in-hospital all-cause mortality. We performed a retrospective international cohort study in five COVID-19 geriatric units in France and Switzerland. Among 1,357 consecutive hospitalized patients aged 75 or older and testing positive for SARS-CoV-2, we included 1,072 with radiologically confirmed pneumonia. To adjust for confounders, a propensity score for treatment was created, and stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting (SIPTW) was applied. To assess the association between aspirin use and in-hospital 30-day mortality, SIPTW-adjusted Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed. Of the 1047 patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and median age 86 years, 301 (28.7%) were taking aspirin treatment before admission. One hundred forty-seven (34.3%) patients who had taken aspirin died in hospital within 1 month vs 118 patients (30.7%) without aspirin. After SIPTW, aspirin treatment was not significantly associated with lower mortality (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.10 [0.81-1.49], P = .52). Moreover, patients on aspirin had a longer hospital stay and were more frequently transferred to the intensive care unit. We sought to analyze the effect of COVID-19 on telestroke requests and to characterize patients remotely evaluated for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) during this time. This study is a retrospective database review of all telestroke requests at one academic vascular neurology center telestroke network with seven remote sites in the USA between March 15 and April 30, 2020. Data were compared with historical cohort spanning same time frame in 2019 using parametric or nonparametric methods as appropriate. Among telestroke requests, characteristics of age, gender, race/ethnicity, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), primary diagnosis of AIS or transient ischemic attack (TIA), and number of patients receiving intravenous alteplase (IV-rtPA) and endovascular therapy (ET) were recorded. There was a 53% decrease in telestroke evaluation requests in 2020 from 2019 (p < 0.00001). Mean NIHSS in 2020 was 9.1 (SD ± 8.4) and mean NIHSS in 2019 was 7.2 (SD ± 7.3) (p = 0.122). Among patients with primary diagnosis of suspected AIS or TIA, mean age was 60.5 years in 2020 (SD ± 17.5) and mean age of 67.0 years in 2019 (SD ± 16.0) (p = 0.038). A significant lower number of telestroke evaluations were performed with a higher mean NIHSS overall and a lower mean age among AIS/TIA-suspected patients. Higher NIHSS and severity in all telestroke evaluations reflect neurological manifestations of AIS and mimics, possibly influenced by COVID-19. Background: Efficiency of care chain response and hospital reactivity were and are challenged for stroke acute care management during the pandemic period of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in North-Eastern Italy (Veneto, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Trentino-Alto-Adige), counting 7,193,880 inhabitants (ISTAT), with consequences in acute treatment for patients with ischemic stroke., Methods: We conducted a retrospective data collection of patients admitted to stroke units eventually treated with thrombolysis and thrombectomy, ranging from January to May 2020 from the beginning to the end of the main first pandemic period of COVID-19 in Italy. The primary endpoint was the number of patients arriving to these stroke units, and secondary endpoints were the number of thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy. Chi-square analysis was used on all patients; furthermore, patients were divided into two cohorts (pre-lockdown and lockdown periods) and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to test differences on admission and reperfusive therapies., Results: In total, 2536 patients were included in 22 centers. There was a significant decrease of admissions in April compared to January. Furthermore, we observed a significant decrease of thrombectomy during the lockdown period, while thrombolysis rate was unaffected in the same interval across all centers., Conclusions: Our study confirmed a decrease in admission rate of stroke patients in a large area of northern Italy during the lockdown period, especially during the first dramatic phase. Overall, there was no decrease in thrombolysis rate, confirming an effect of emergency care system for stroke patients. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased staffing needs in emergency departments. The question quickly arose as to whether it was appropriate to offer medical students the opportunity to assist this staff. The dilemma stems in part from the potential impact on their psychological well-being as well as their academic and clinical performances. We sought to determine the level of anxiety of medical students during the COVID-19 outbreak, and whether it was higher among the students who chose to return to the clinical setting, especially in first-line units (i.e., emergency departments and resuscitation units). In May 2020, 1180/1502 (78.5%) undergraduate medical students at Strasbourg Medical School (France) completed a questionnaire assessing their anxiety and clinical experience. A 2018 cohort of undergraduate medical students served as the baseline. The 2020 COVID cohort had higher rates of anxiety than the 2018 cohort. This difference was specifically observed in the students who chose not to return to the clinical setting during the crisis (N = 684, 59%). At linear regression, the main factors associated with anxiety were gender (p < 0.005) and perceived clinical activity personal conditions (p < 0.001). Employment site, including COVID first-line units, was not correlated with anxiety. Working in the clinical setting during the COVID-19 outbreak is not a risk factor for anxiety in medical students. Background: REGEN-COV (previously known as REGN-COV2), a combination of the monoclonal antibodies casirivimab and imdevimab, has been shown to markedly reduce the risk of hospitalization or death among high-risk persons with coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Whether subcutaneous REGEN-COV prevents severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and subsequent Covid-19 in persons at high risk for infection because of household exposure to a person with SARS-CoV-2 infection is unknown., Methods: We randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, participants (≥12 years of age) who were enrolled within 96 hours after a household contact received a diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection to receive a total dose of 1200 mg of REGEN-COV or matching placebo administered by means of subcutaneous injection. At the time of randomization, participants were stratified according to the results of the local diagnostic assay for SARS-CoV-2 and according to age. The primary efficacy end point was the development of symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection through day 28 in participants who did not have SARS-CoV-2 infection (as measured by reverse-transcriptase-quantitative polymerase-chain-reaction assay) or previous immunity (seronegativity)., Results: Symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection developed in 11 of 753 participants in the REGEN-COV group (1.5%) and in 59 of 752 participants in the placebo group (7.8%) (relative risk reduction [1 minus the relative risk], 81.4%; P<0.001). In weeks 2 to 4, a total of 2 of 753 participants in the REGEN-COV group (0.3%) and 27 of 752 participants in the placebo group (3.6%) had symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection (relative risk reduction, 92.6%). REGEN-COV also prevented symptomatic and asymptomatic infections overall (relative risk reduction, 66.4%). Among symptomatic infected participants, the median time to resolution of symptoms was 2 weeks shorter with REGEN-COV than with placebo (1.2 weeks and 3.2 weeks, respectively), and the duration of a high viral load (>10 4 copies per milliliter) was shorter (0.4 weeks and 1.3 weeks, respectively). No dose-limiting toxic effects of REGEN-COV were noted., Conclusions: Subcutaneous REGEN-COV prevented symptomatic Covid-19 and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in previously uninfected household contacts of infected persons. Among the participants who became infected, REGEN-COV reduced the duration of symptomatic disease and the duration of a high viral load. The COVID-19 pandemic has been the most significant health crisis in recent global history. Early studies from Wuhan highlighted COVID-19-associated coagulopathy and a significant association with mortality was soon recognised. As research continues across the world, more evidence is emerging of the cross-talk between the innate immune system, coagulation activation and inflammation. Immunothrombosis has been demonstrated to play a key role in the pathophysiology of severe COVID-19, with extracellular histones and neutrophil extracellular traps detected in the plasma and cardiopulmonary tissues of critically ill patients. Targeting the components of immunothrombosis is becoming an important factor in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 infection. Recent studies report outcomes of intermediate and therapeutic anticoagulation in hospitalised patients with varying severities of COVID-19 disease, including optimal dosing and associated bleeding risks. Immunomodulatory therapies, including corticosteroids and IL-6 receptor antagonists, have been demonstrated to significantly reduce mortality in COVID-19 patients. As the pandemic continues, more studies are required to understand the driving factors and upstream mechanisms for coagulopathy and immunothrombosis in COVID-19, and thus potentially develop more targeted therapies for SARS-CoV-2 infection, both in the acute phase and in those who develop longer-term symptom burden., (© 2021 The Authors. Background: Vaccines are needed to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) and to protect persons who are at high risk for complications. The mRNA-1273 vaccine is a lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated mRNA-based vaccine that encodes the prefusion stabilized full-length spike protein of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes Covid-19., Methods: This phase 3 randomized, observer-blinded, placebo-controlled trial was conducted at 99 centers across the United States. Persons at high risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection or its complications were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive two intramuscular injections of mRNA-1273 (100 μg) or placebo 28 days apart. The primary end point was prevention of Covid-19 illness with onset at least 14 days after the second injection in participants who had not previously been infected with SARS-CoV-2., Results: The trial enrolled 30,420 volunteers who were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either vaccine or placebo (15,210 participants in each group). More than 96% of participants received both injections, and 2.2% had evidence (serologic, virologic, or both) of SARS-CoV-2 infection at baseline. Symptomatic Covid-19 illness was confirmed in 185 participants in the placebo group (56.5 per 1000 person-years; 95% confidence interval [CI], 48.7 to 65.3) and in 11 participants in the mRNA-1273 group (3.3 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI, 1.7 to 6.0); vaccine efficacy was 94.1% (95% CI, 89.3 to 96.8%; P<0.001). Efficacy was similar across key secondary analyses, including assessment 14 days after the first dose, analyses that included participants who had evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection at baseline, and analyses in participants 65 years of age or older. Severe Covid-19 occurred in 30 participants, with one fatality; all 30 were in the placebo group. Moderate, transient reactogenicity after vaccination occurred more frequently in the mRNA-1273 group. Serious adverse events were rare, and the incidence was similar in the two groups., Conclusions: The mRNA-1273 vaccine showed 94.1% efficacy at preventing Covid-19 illness, including severe disease. Aside from transient local and systemic reactions, no safety concerns were identified. This N = 173,426 social science dataset was collected through the collaborative COVIDiSTRESS Global Survey - an open science effort to improve understanding of the human experiences of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic between 30th March and 30th May, 2020. The dataset allows a cross-cultural study of psychological and behavioural responses to the Coronavirus pandemic and associated government measures like cancellation of public functions and stay at home orders implemented in many countries. The dataset contains demographic background variables as well as measures of Asian Disease Problem, perceived stress (PSS-10), availability of social provisions (SPS-10), trust in various authorities, trust in governmental measures to contain the virus (OECD trust), personality traits (BFF-15), information behaviours, agreement with the level of government intervention, and compliance with preventive measures, along with a rich pool of exploratory variables and written experiences. A global consortium from 39 countries and regions worked together to build and translate a survey with variables of shared interests, and recruited participants in 47 languages and dialects. Raw plus cleaned data and dynamic visualizations are available.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed enormous challenges to the healthcare systems worldwide, which are mainly shouldered by healthcare workers from all professions. This chapter outlines the potential stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic for health professionals and describes possible consequences for their mental health as well as potential interventions and coping strategies. The chapter is based on preliminary research on the psychosocial implications of the COVID-19 pandemic in health professionals and is complemented by findings from previous outbreaks of high-risk infectious diseases. High proportions of healthcare workers report acute symptoms of anxiety, depression, high psychological stress, and insomnia in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Coping strategies and self-care on an individual level, interventions on an institutional level such as specific training and institutional support, as well as social and psychological support can help to mitigate psychological strain. Further reliable and prospective studies regarding the mental health of health professionals, as well as further measures to protect their short- and long-term mental health, are required.

In the midst of a pandemic like COVID-19, migrant workers are highly vulnerable to the risk of mental health challenges and disorders. This study aimed to examine the variations in mental health and associated factors among migrant workers in Korea during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 830 migrant workers were included in this quantitative population-based study across two distinct COVID-19 periods: 415 from August 15, 2020 to January 20, 2021 (termed "during COVID-19" post-WHO pandemic declaration) and 415 from June 10 to September 18, 2023 (termed "after COVID-19" post-WHO and Korean Government announcement of the end COVID-19 as a global health emergency). The mental health of migrants was assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 for anxiety, and compared between the two defined COVID-19 periods. Migrant workers exhibited higher means of depression (15.99 ± 5.16 vs. 8.78 ± 5.77) and anxiety (11.02 ± 4.45 vs. 6.97 ± 4.42) during the COVID-19 compared to after the COVID-19. The prevalence of severe depression (30.4% vs. 8.2%, p =.038) and severe anxiety (24.1% vs. 5.3%, p =.047) was significantly higher during the COVID-19 than after the pandemic. Changes in the mean depression scores among migrants were significantly influenced by living status (0.12 ± 11.10, p =.030) and employment status (0.44 ± 10.33, p =.043), while changes in mean anxiety scores were influenced by social relief funds (2.88 ± 8.61, p =.046) and employment status (1.13 ± 8.39, p =.012). This study highlights the increased susceptibility of migrant workers to depression and anxiety during COVID-19 compared to after the pandemic. Thus, it is imperative to prioritize the expansion of social support funds, ensure employment stability, and implement regular health check-up services to reduce mental health disorders among migrants. Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality and predominantly caused by five Neisseria meningitidis serogroups (A/B/C/W/Y). Polysaccharide conjugate vaccines induce T-cell-dependent immune responses, are immunogenic in infants and adults, and reduce carriage, and vaccination of age groups associated with high-carriage can provide indirect protection in the unvaccinated (herd immunity). Successful vaccination programs must be tailored to local epidemiology, which varies geographically, temporally, and by age and serogroup. Serogroup A IMD once predominated globally, but has largely disappeared following mass vaccination programs. Serogroup B was a predominant cause of IMD in many global regions from 2010 to 2018, typically affecting younger age groups. Spread of serogroup C clonal complex-11 IMD in the 1990s prompted implementation of MenC vaccine programs in many countries, resulting in declines in prevalence. Serogroup C still caused > 20% of global IMD through the mid-2010s. Serogroup W became a significant contributor to global IMD after Hajj pilgrimage outbreaks in 2000; subsequent increases of endemic disease and outbreaks were reported pre-pandemic in many regions. Serogroup Y emerged in the 1990s as a significant cause of IMD throughout various regions and prevalence had increased or stabilized from 2010 to 2018. Serogroup X is uncommon outside the African meningitis belt, and its prevalence has declined since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Global IMD declines during the pandemic were followed by resurgences generally caused by serogroups that were prevalent pre-pandemic and affecting mainly unvaccinated age groups (particularly adolescents/young adults). Recent IMD epidemiology underscores the importance of vaccinating at-risk age groups against regionally prevalent serogroups; for example, the anti-serogroup X component of the recently prequalified MenACWXY vaccine is likely to provide limited protection outside the African meningitis belt. In other regions, comprehensive vaccination against MenB and MenACWY, which could be streamlined by the recently approved MenABCWY vaccine, seems more appropriate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are often caused by group A Streptococcus (GAS). As the number of invasive GAS infections decreased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic restrictions, this study aimed to compare the occurrence of GAS-NSTIs before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Methods This retrospective cohort study included adult patients with NSTIs admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, from July 2008 to December 2023. NSTI cases were categorized as pre-, during, and postrestrictions. The primary outcome was the proportion of GAS in NSTI, and the exploratory secondary outcome was in-hospital death. A data analysis was conducted using Firth logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, diabetes, and initially affected body region. Results Overall, 74 NSTI cases were identified, with 49 occurring before, 8 during, and 17 after the pandemic restrictions. GAS was isolated in 27 (36%) cases, with 17 (35%) pre- and 10 (59%) postrestrictions, but none during the restrictions. NSTIs caused by other bacteria persisted during the restrictions. The odds of GAS were significantly lower during the restrictions (adjusted odds ratio, 0.02; 95% CI, 0.001–0.81) compared with after, while no significant differences were found between the pre- and postrestriction periods. Conclusions The significant decrease of GAS-NSTIs during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions suggests that isolation measures may have prevented the transmission of GAS, resulting in a decline of GAS-NSTIs while NSTIs caused by bacteria transmitted by alternative routes persisted. Purpose: This study aims to highlight the moderating role of perceived organizational, supervisory and coworker's support in weakening the negative relationship between fear of pandemic (FOP) and employee's engagement in the Asian organizations. Furthermore, this study also aims to explore the role of employees' engagement as an intervening mechanism, which mediates the relationship between FOP and employee's performance in an Asian postpandemic context. Design/methodology/approach: Based on extensive review of recent literature and sound theoretical reasoning, the authors have developed a comprehensive conceptual framework (with related theoretical propositions) which provides clear guidelines as to how Asian Business Managers/organizations can minimize the adverse effect of the employee's fear triggered by the pandemic at the workplace and how provision of effective and timely organizational/interpersonal support (i.e. organizational, managerial and coworkers level support) can help Asian Managers address various workplace challenges created by the pandemic moving forward. This study has further validated the proposed conceptual framework and related theoretical propositions by conducting an in-depth bibliometric analysis and by developing clusters of the co-occurrences based on most recent/ relevant literature published in the area. Findings: This study advances the knowledge in the areas of FOP and organizational support in particular. A comprehensive review of the literature clearly indicates how effective organizational, supervisory and peer support mechanism can help Asian Business Managers in alleviating the negative impact of the FOP on various employee level outcomes such as employees "engagement and performance" and how it can help Asian firms in addressing the associated challenges while working in a postpandemic context. Later on, an in-depth bibliometric analysis of the literature has revealed emerging knowledge patterns in the field and has indicated several key gaps in the existing literature which further confirms the theoretical framework and the propositions related thereto. Originality/value: Though several researchers have previously examined the fear created by COVID-19 at workplace, relatively fewer researchers have tried to link it up with employees' level of involvement/ engagement at workplace. Even fewer researchers have tried to examine the vital role that organizational, managerial and peers support can play in minimizing the adverse effects created by pandemic-induced fears for employees' productivity and performance in an Asian workplace context. Furthermore, hardly any efforts have been made to look at this popular notion of employees' engagement as an intervening mechanism which carries a significant potential to mediate the relationship between FOP and employees' job performance. This study aims to bridge all these gaps by integrating the two main streams of knowledge together, i.e. Four Horsemen of Fear and Organizational Support theory. Based on strong theoretical reasoning, an in-depth review and a bibliometric analysis of the relevant literature, the authors have developed a comprehensive conceptual framework which explains how various levels of support may interact with FOP to predict different levels of employees' engagement in a contemporary Asian workplace and how this in turn may impact employees' job performance while at work. Angiotensin-converting enzymes (ACE) are well-known for their roles in both blood pressure regulation via the renin-angiotensin system as well as functions in fertility, immunity, hematopoiesis, and many others. The two main isoforms of ACE include ACE and ACE-2 (ACE2). Both isoforms have similar structures and mediate numerous effects on the cardiovascular system. Most remarkably, ACE2 serves as an entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2. Understanding the interaction between the virus and ACE2 is vital to combating the disease and preventing a similar pandemic in the future. Noninvasive imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography and single photon emission computed tomography could noninvasively and quantitatively assess in vivo ACE2 expression levels. ACE2-targeted imaging can be used as a valuable tool to better understand the mechanism of the infection process and the potential roles of ACE2 in homeostasis and related diseases. Together, this information can aid in the identification of potential therapeutic drugs for infectious diseases, cancer, and many ACE2-related diseases. The present review summarized the state-of-the-art radiotracers for ACE2 imaging, including their chemical design, pharmacological properties, radiochemistry, as well as preclinical and human molecular imaging findings. Objective: We aimed to investigate the effect of oral anticoagulant (OA) use during coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) on early admission laboratory parameters and/or length of hospital stay in patients receiving chronic OA medication. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included two groups; group 1 (n=62) consisted of OA users, and group 2 (n=75) of age and sexmatched OA non-users at the time of COVID-19 diagnosis. Early admission laboratory measures, numbers of comorbidities, length of hospital stay, and outcomes of patients were recorded and analyzed. Results: Despite higher comorbidities in group 1, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and D-dimer levels were significantly lower than group 2 (p<0.05, all). The mortality rate was higher in group 2 but did not reach statistical significance (p>0.05). Regression analysis showed that OA users (compared to OA non-users) had 0.980 and 0.520 times lower serum CRP and D-dimer levels, respectively. Conclusion: This study showed a beneficial effect of OA use on early admission serum CRP, and D-dimer levels, which are important prognostic predictors of COVID-19. Additionally, OA use is associated with fewer hospital stays for COVID-19 patients. Background: Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, nursing students' contribution to combating this global health crisis is becoming more significant. However, we need a more comprehensive understanding of the psychological impact of this crisis on these students. Therefore, this study holds immense importance as it offers valuable insights into the connection between COVID-19 pandemic fear, coping strategies, and depressive symptoms among nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect and analyze data from 319 undergraduate nursing students. They participated in the study by responding to an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of the Fear of the Coronavirus Questionnaire, Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced, and the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Results: The study revealed that 45.5% of the participants had a severe fear of COVID-19, 21.9% showed severe depressive symptoms, and 64.6% used moderate coping mechanisms. A positive correlation (r = 0.160, p = 0.01) was found between the fear of COVID-19 and depressive symptoms. Interestingly, this correlation turned negative (r = -0.074, p = 0.01) when adaptive coping strategies such as religion, acceptance, planning, positive reframing, instrumental support, emotional support, active coping, and humor were used. However, when participants resorted to maladaptive coping strategies like venting, self-distraction, self-blame, behavioral disengagement, denial, and substance abuse, the correlation between high fear levels and depressive symptoms became positive (r = 0.352, p = 0.01). Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the fear of COVID-19 and depressive symptoms among nursing students are significantly correlated. However, the nature of this correlation is influenced by the type of coping strategies employed. Adaptive coping mechanisms can mitigate the impact of fear on depressive symptoms. In contrast, maladaptive coping can exacerbate the relationship between fear and depressive symptoms. Background: Before the COVID-19 pandemic there has been a constant increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Escherichia coli, the most common cause of urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production in urine and blood E. coli isolates in Finland to improve our understanding on the source attribution of this major multidrug-resistant pathogen. Methods: Susceptibility test results of 564,233 urine (88.3% from females) and 23,860 blood E. coli isolates (58.8% from females) were obtained from the nationwide surveillance database of Finnish clinical microbiology laboratories. Susceptibility testing was performed according to EUCAST guidelines. We compared ESBL-producing E. coli proportions and incidence before (2018–2019), during (2020–2021), and after (2022) the pandemic and stratified these by age groups and sex. Results: The annual number of urine E. coli isolates tested for antimicrobial susceptibility decreased 23.3% during 2018–2022 whereas the number of blood E. coli isolates increased 1.1%. The annual proportion of ESBL-producing E. coli in urine E. coli isolates decreased 28.7% among males, from 6.9% (average during 2018–2019) to 4.9% in 2022, and 28.7% among females, from 3.0 to 2.1%. In blood E. coli isolates, the proportion decreased 32.9% among males, from 9.3 to 6.2%, and 26.6% among females, from 6.2 to 4.6%. A significant decreasing trend was also observed in most age groups, but risk remained highest among persons aged ≥ 60 years. Conclusions: The reduction in the proportions of ESBL-producing E. coli was comprehensive, covering both specimen types, both sexes, and all age groups, showing that the continuously increasing trends could be reversed. Decrease in international travel and antimicrobial use were likely behind this reduction, suggesting that informing travellers about the risk of multidrug-resistant bacteria, hygiene measures, and appropriate antimicrobial use is crucial in prevention. Animal models have been critical in understanding the pathogenesis, transmission, and therapeutic interventions for COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2. The primary challenges include species-specific differences in viral receptor expression, particularly the ACE2 receptor, and immune system responses, which can affect how closely these models mimic human COVID-19 pathology. Additionally, ethical concerns around the use of animals, especially non-human primates, and logistical issues such as high costs, housing requirements, and limited availability of certain models, further complicate research efforts. Transgenic mice expressing human ACE2 (hACE2) are widely used because of their ease of handling and cost-effectiveness. Other animal models include non-human primates, hamsters, cats, and ferrets, which were used to study viral transmission and host-pathogen interactions. The rapid dynamics of the SARSCoV-2 evolution is one of the challenges and the complementary use of multiple models provides a more comprehensive understanding of the disease. Nonetheless, these models have been essential for rapid advancements in COVID-19 vaccine and therapeutic development, offering insights that continue to guide public health strategies. This study aimed to determine the incidence and etiological, seasonal, and genetic characteristics of respiratory viral coinfections involving severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Between October 2020 and January 2024, nasopharyngeal samples were collected from 2277 SARS-CoV-2-positive patients. Two multiplex approaches were used to detect and sequence SARS-CoV-2, influenza A/B viruses, and other seasonal respiratory viruses: multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and multiplex next-generation sequencing. Coinfections of SARS-CoV-2 with other respiratory viruses were detected in 164 (7.2%) patients. The most common co-infecting virus was respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (38 cases, 1.7%), followed by bocavirus (BoV) (1.2%) and rhinovirus (RV) (1.1%). Patients ≤ 16 years of age had the highest rate (15%) of mixed infections. Whole-genome sequencing produced 19 complete genomes of seasonal respiratory viral co-pathogens, which were subjected to phylogenetic and amino acid analyses. The detected influenza viruses were classified into the genetic groups 6B.1A.5a.2a and 6B.1A.5a.2a.1 for A(H1N1)pdm09, 3C.2a1b.2a.2a.1 and 3C.2a.2b for A(H3N2), and V1A.3a.2 for the B/Victoria lineage. The RSV-B sequences belonged to the genetic group GB5.0.5a, with HAdV-C belonging to type 1, BoV to genotype VP1, and PIV3 to lineage 1a(i). Multiple amino acid substitutions were identified, including at the antibody-binding sites. This study provides insights into respiratory viral coinfections involving SARS-CoV-2 and reinforces the importance of genetic characterization of co-pathogens in the development of therapeutic and preventive strategies. As one of the most densely populated countries in the world, Bangladesh has been trying to contain the impact of a pandemic like coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) since March, 2020. Although government announced an array of restricted measures to slow down the diffusion in the beginning of the pandemic, the lockdown has been lifted gradually by reopening all the industries, markets and offices with a notable exception of educational institutes. As the physical geography of Bangladesh is highly variable across the largest delta, the population of different regions and their lifestyle also differ in the country. Thus, to get the real scenario of the current pandemic and a possible second wave of COVID-19 transmission across Bangladesh, it is essential to analyze the transmission dynamics over the individual districts. In this paper, we propose to integrate the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) with classic SIRD model to explain the epidemic evolution of individual districts in the country. We show that UKF-SIRD model results in a robust prediction of the transmission dynamics for 1–4 months. Then we apply the robust UKF-SIRD model over different regions in Bangladesh to estimates the course of the epidemic. Our analysis demonstrates that in addition to the densely populated areas, industrial areas and popular tourist spots will be in the risk of higher COVID-19 transmission if a second wave of COVID-19 occurs in the country. Background: The clinical manifestations and prognosis of hemodialysis patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) during the Omicron wave of the pandemic infection were still unclear. This study investigated the clinical characteristics of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) infected with it. Methods: This retrospective single-center study included 151 patients undergoing MHD. Healthcare workers were selected as control group were assessed from December 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. Clinical data, laboratory test results, treatment protocols, and prognoses were collected and analyzed. Results: The study population included 146 patients with MHD, 93 (63.7%) of whom were infected with SARS-CoV-2. The number of non-severe, severe, and critical cases was 84 (90.3%), 4 (4.3%), and 5 (5.3%), respectively. Six patients (6.5%) died during the study period. The main symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including fever, cough, and fatigue, were less common in patients with MHD than the controls. During SARS-CoV-2 infection, the C-reactive protein (2.9 vs. 11.8 mg/dl, p < 0.0001) and ferritin levels(257.7 vs. 537 ng/l, p < 0.0001) were elevated. The hemoglobin(113vs 111 g/L, p = 0.0001) and albumin levels(39.4 vs. 36.1 g/L, p < 0.0001) decreased. Generally, it took two months for the hemoglobin levels to recover. Positivity rate for SARS-COV-2 serum immunoglobin G (IgG) antibodies and IgG titers were lower in dialysis patients than the controls. Age was positively associated with disease severity, while age and hyponatremia were associated with death. Conclusions: Patients with MHD and COVID-19 were primarily classified as non-severe. SARS-CoV-2 infection would soon lead to the increase of inflammation related acute response protein in dialysis patients, and then lead to the decrease of hemoglobin and albumin. Recent pandemic outbreaks, including the COVID-19 and SARS, have revealed that supply chains (SCs) are unable to respond to such disasters. To mitigate the destructive impacts and improve the performance of SCs, Operations Research (OR) techniques have been applied to address the issues over the last two decades. The objective of this paper is to develop a network data envelopment analysis (NDEA) model to measure the resilience and sustainability of healthcare SCs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. In the proposed NDEA model, for the first time, outputs' weak disposability, chance-constrained programming (CCP), the convexity assumption, and the semi-oriented radial approach are aggregated. Moreover, a modified directional distance function (DDF) measure is developed to measure the overall and divisional efficiency scores. Furthermore, the proposed model can deal with different types of data such as integer-valued data, negative data, stochastic data, ratio data, and undesirable outputs. Also, several useful and interesting properties of the novel efficiency measure are presented. Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is critically affecting not only the physical health but also mental health globally. This study aimed to define the frequency of sleep disorders in COVID-19 positive patients in Aswan University Hospitals, Aswan Governorate, Egypt to clarify the different clinical types of them and to identify factors associated with sleep changes during the COVID-19. Methods: Our study recruited 280 positive COVID-19 patients. Their sleep disorders were diagnosed by using Global Sleep Assessment questionnaire (GSAQ). Their socioeconomic status was determined by using Revised Kuppuswamy Socioeconomic Status Scale (RK SSS). The severity of anxiety symptoms and insomnia were determined by using Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) respectively. Diagnosis of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) was completed according to Restless Leg Syndrome Diagnostic Index (RLS-DI). Results: Sleep disorders were documented in 35.7% of our patients. They were categorized into insomnia (24.6%), RLS (15%) and poor sleep quality (17.4%). Younger age and female sex were the predominate age and sex. Most of them had severe anxiety. Upper class of socioeconomic status was the commonest SES. Most of patients had CORADS I and II respectively. Conclusion: The present study recognized that female gender, younger population, COVID-19 related stressors were the major factors associated with sleep disorder. The most important feature of load forecasting is enabling the building management system to control and manage its loads with available resources ahead of time. The electricity usage in residential buildings has increased during the COVID-19period, as compared to normal times.Therefore,the performance of forecasting methods is impacted, and further tuning of parameters is required to cope with energy consumption changes due to COVID-19. This paper proposes a new adaptive neuro-fuzzy 2 inference system (ANFIS2) for energy usage forecasting in residential buildings for both normal and COVID-19 periods. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) method has been implemented for parameter optimization, and subtractive clustering is used for data training for the proposed ANFIS2 system. Two modifications in terms of input and parameters of ANFIS2 are made to cope with the change in the consumption pattern and reduce the prediction errors during the COVID-19 period. Simulation results obtained by MATLAB software validate the efficacy of the proposed ANFIS2 in residential load forecasting during both normal and COVID-19 periods. Moreover, the performance of the proposed method is better than that of the existing adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), long short-term memory (LSTM), and random forest (RF) approaches. Cancer has been described as a risk factor for greater susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19, mainly for patients with metastatic disease. Conversely, to that reported for most solid and hematological malignancies, the few available clinical studies reported that the infection did not increase the risk of death in renal cancer patients. The expression on proximal tubular renal cells of the key players in cellular viral uptake, ACE2, TMPRSS2, and NRP1, seems to be the mechanism for the direct kidney injury seen in patients with COVID-19. Interestingly, data from The Cancer Genome Atlas and experimental analyses on various renal cancer cell lines demonstrated that the above-reported receptors/cofactors are maintained by renal cancer cells. However, whether SARS-CoV-2 infection directly kills renal cancer cells or generates enhanced immunogenicity is a question worth investigating. In addition, some researchers have further addressed the topic by studying the expression and prognostic significance of gene signatures related to SARS-CoV-2 infection in renal cancer patients. The emerging data highlights the importance of better understanding the existence of a link between renal cancer and COVID-19 since it could lead to the identification of new prognostic factors and the development of new therapeutic targets in the management of renal cancer patients. Advances in microfluidic device miniaturization and system integration contribute to the development of portable, handheld, and smartphone-compatible devices. These advancements in diagnostics have the potential to revolutionize the approach to detect and respond to future pandemics. Accordingly, herein, recent advances in point-of-care testing (POCT) of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using various microdevices, including lateral flow assay strips, vertical flow assay strips, microfluidic channels, and paper-based microfluidic devices, are reviewed. However, visual determination of the diagnostic results using only microdevices leads to many false-negative results due to the limited detection sensitivities of these devices. Several POCT systems comprising microdevices integrated with portable optical readers have been developed to address this issue. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, effective POCT strategies for COVID-19 based on optical detection methods have been established. They can be categorized into fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, and wearable sensing. We introduced next-generation pandemic sensing methods incorporating artificial intelligence that can be used to meet global health needs in the future. Additionally, we have discussed appropriate responses of various testing devices to emerging infectious diseases and prospective preventive measures for the post-pandemic era. Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology, serotype distribution, phenotypical antibiogram, and molecular resistance gene characteristics of invasive Haemophilus influenzae infections in Denmark from 2014 to 2022. Additionally, the potential impact of outdoor temperature and COVID-19 restrictions on the epidemiology of H. influenzae was assessed. Materials and methods: Invasive H. influenzae isolates were received from patients with positive culture results from cerebrospinal fluid, blood, or other sterile sites. Sample data were obtained from the Danish laboratory surveillance system/MiBa database, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on the isolates. The incidence rates and distribution of H. influenzae cases were analyzed, and antibiotic susceptibility were assessed. Results: A total of 1,007 invasive H. influenzae cases were identified, with serotyping conducted for 752 (74.7%) isolates. The median incidence per year of H. influenzae was 2.0 cases per 100,000, with the highest incidence in 2014 and the lowest in 2020. The majority of H. influenzae isolates were non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi), while the most prominent serotypes were serotype f followed by serotype b. Bacteremia cases accounted for the majority (88.6%) of occurrences, although meningitis cases showed an increasing trend during the time period. The age group 85+ exhibited the highest incidence. The implementation of COVID-19 preventive interventions in 2020 resulted in a significant reduction in H. influenzae incidence, which returned to pre-COVID levels in 2021. A negative correlation was observed between monthly H. influenzae cases and outdoor temperature. An overall level of genetic beta-lactamase resistance of 26.3% was observed divided into 10.6% beta-lactamase-positive ampicillin-resistant (gBLPAR), 13.6% beta-lactamase-negative ampicillin-resistant (gBLNAR) and 2.1% beta-lactamase-positive amoxicillin clavulanate-resistant (gBLPACR). Other non-beta-lactam resistance traits were detected in 7.6% of isolates (primarily aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes). Conclusion: The overall incidence of H. influenzae in Denmark returned to stable levels after the COVID-19 epidemic, with NTHi strains dominating. The COVID-19 preventive interventions led to a major reduction in incidence. A significant negative correlation between the incidence of H. influenzae and temperature was observed.
