Abstract

SQM-ISS is a detector that will search from the International Space Station for massive particles possibly present among the cosmic rays. Among them, we mention strange quark matter, Q-Balls, lumps of fermionic exotic compact stars, Primordial Black Holes, mirror matter, Fermi balls, etc. These compact, dense objects would be much heavier than normal nuclei, have velocities of galaxy-bound systems, and would be deeply penetrating. The detector is based on a stack of scintillator and piezoelectric elements which can provide information on both the charge state and mass, with the additional timing information allowing to determine the speed of the particle, searching for particles with velocities of the order of galactic rotation speed (v ≲ 250 km/s). Abstract

To take up the challenge of understanding the origin of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), new observational means appear necessary. The JEM-EUSO Collaboration has undertaken to open the space road to UHECR studies. For more than a decade, it has been developing a realistic program to measure the UHECRs from space with unprecedented aperture, together with complementary scientific objectives in a broader multidisciplinary context. Several intermediate missions have already been completed (on the ground: EUSO-TA; under stratospheric ballons: EUSO-Balloon and EUSO-SPB1; in space: TUS, and on-board the ISS: MINI-EUSO), and others are in preparation for flight (EUSO-SPB2), under review (K-EUSO: currently on hold), or proposed for the next decade (POEMMA). We report on the general status of the JEM-EUSO program, underlining that its technology has now reached operational maturity, and is ready for actual cosmic-ray shower detection from above. Abstract

Mini-EUSO is a telescope launched on board the International Space Station in 2019 and currently located in the Russian section of the station. Main scientific objectives of the mission are the search for nuclearites and Strange Quark Matter, the study of atmospheric phenomena such as Transient Luminous Events, meteors and meteoroids, the observation of sea bioluminescence and of artificial satellites and man-made space debris. It is also capable of observing Extensive Air Showers generated by Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays with an energy above 1021 eV and detect artificial showers generated with lasers from the ground. Mini-EUSO can map the night-time Earth in the UV range (290 - 430 nm), with a spatial resolution of about 6.3 km and a temporal resolution of 2.5 μs, observing our planet through a nadir-facing UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module. The instrument, launched on 2019/08/22 from the Baikonur cosmodrome, is based on an optical system employing two Fresnel lenses and a focal surface composed of 36 Multi-Anode Photomultiplier tubes, 64 channels each, for a total of 2304 channels with single photon counting sensitivity and an overall field of view of 44◦. Mini-EUSO also contains two ancillary cameras to complement measurements in the near infrared and visible ranges. 4. The EUSO program: Imaging of ultra‐high energy cosmic rays by high‐speed UV‐video from space.

Abstract

The Extreme-Energy Cosmic Rays (EECR), with energy above 5∙10 19 eV, are very interesting objects to study that can provide new information about our universe. At the same time EECRs are exceptionally challenging to study because they are so rare. To obtain a reasonably large statistical sample, the JEM-EUSO collaboration aims to place a telescope into space. Various technologies are being developed and studied to achieve this goal. Several pathfinders are used for validation and testing. In particular, during 2017 a long-duration super-pressure balloon flight will observe the first high energy cosmic rays from above using the fluorescence technique, and a small test unit, Mini-EUSO, will be sent to ISS to measure the UV-background from Earth night side.
