Background: The occurrence of root resorption (RR) is an unavoidable result of orthodontic treatment. Finding a straightforward approach to its prevention remains a challenge. It is a tragic occurrence when radiographically detected, even though it is rarely severe. The application of force starts a sequence of biological mechanisms. Although we are well aware of how and when it is provoked, we are unable to foresee what will happen in the end. In the past few years, clear aligner therapy has become very popular. Although not much data has been established describing RR after this treatment. Aim: The following review determines the effect of aligner therapy on the resorption of roots leading to the shortening of root length. Methods: Research publications were searched on search engines such as Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar using terms such as "RR," "risk factors of RR" and "effects of clear aligner therapy on RR." These publications were then collected. Results: For this review, 30 articles were collected and further used to formulate this review. Conclusion: (1) Most affected teeth were the maxillary central and lateral incisors post aligner therapy. (2) Multiple factors that influenced RR were gender, malocclusion, the severity of crowding, type of tooth movement, and close approximation of root toward the cortical plate (3) Clear aligner therapy is comparable to LightForce fixed orthodontics appliances but surpasses heavy-force orthodontic appliances in the terms of the risk associated with developing RR. To ensure successful treatment and to prevent undesired tooth movements, it's essential to manage reciprocal forces effectively. Anchorage control becomes particularly crucial in cases involving extractions, where it can help prevent unwanted tooth movement. However, during treatment, there's a risk of anchorage loss, which can undermine the treatment objectives. Therefore, it's imperative to monitor molar movement and assess for anchorage loss throughout treatment. Research publications were searched on search engines such as Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar, and articles with terms such as "anchorage management, assessment of anchorage loss, anchorage loss, space closure, en masse retraction and canine retraction" were collected. Various methods for evaluating anchorage loss are dental casts, 3-Dimensional assessment and lateral cephalogram superimposition. Dental casts works well for assessing anteroposterior anchorage loss in maxillary first molars. However, their utility in the mandibular arch is limited due to the absence of a stable reference point. Lateral cephalometry faces the challenge of superimposing bilateral structures. The recent introduction of 3D superimposition techniques offers a potential solution for assessing anchorage loss in the vertical dimension using dental casts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Gene therapy deals with the insertion of exogenous genes into a cell to produce the desired therapeutic effect. After the introduction of gene therapy in dentistry, this field is also flourishing rapidly in the branch of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics as it can prevent many prenatal and postnatal dentofacial anomalies which have the genetical etiology. Despite various animal studies showing promising results, a lot more is left to be explored. Aim: This narrative review was conducted to understand the role of gene therapy for various orthodontic procedures and its future scope. Methods: Research publications were searched on search engines such as Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar, and articles with terms such as “gene therapy, orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), condylar growth, and bone repair” were collected. Results: A total of 40 articles were collected and they were further used to formulate this review. Discussion: Gene therapy was found to have a major role in orthodontics, especially for: (i) Modulation in OTM, (ii) Alleviation of orthodontic pain, (iii) Enhancement of bone repair and regeneration, (iv) Improving midface hypoplasia by preventing syndromic craniosynostosis, and (v) Modifying condylar growth. AIMS: The primary purpose of the present trial was to evaluate the effect of low-frequency (30Hz) vibrations on the rate of canine retraction. SETTING AND DESIGN: Single-center, split mouth prospective randomized controlled clinical trial METHODS AND MATERIAL: 100 screened subjects (aged18--25 years) were selected; out of which 30 subjects having Class I bimaxillary protrusion or Class II div 1 malocclusion, requiring upper 1st premolar therapeutic extractions, were selected for the study. A split-mouth study design was prepared for the maxillary arch of each selected individual and was randomly allocated into vibration and nonvibration side (control) groups. A customized vibratory device was fabricated for each subject to deliver low-frequency vibrations (30 Hz). Scanned 3D models were prepared sequentially to assess the amount of tooth movement from baseline (T0),(T1), (T2), (T3), and (T4)-4th month of canine retraction. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Independent "t" test. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant differencein the rate of individual canine retraction among the experimental and control groups when the intergroup comparison was done using independent "t" test at T1-T0, (P = 0.954), T2-T1 (P = 0.244), T3-T2 (P = 0.357), and T4-T3 (P = 0.189). CONCLUSION: The low-frequency vibratory stimulation of 30 Hz using a customized vibratory device did not significantly accelerate the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The purpose of this review article is to discuss the different type of retainers used to stabilize the treatment outcome in different malocclusions. Strategic and through search of the literature from different databases was undertaken using free text and MESH terms. Result: Extensive study of the literature suggests that the duration and type of retention varies for different malocclusion and should be planned at the start of orthodontic treatment, as it plays important role in stabilizing the treatment outcome. Conclusion: Irrespective of the type of appliance used for retention, the patient should be informed and prepared for the long term or indefinite use of retainers and its role in maintaining the treatment results.
