Prisons are stressful environments for both people living and working in them. Extant literature suggests that correctional staff have increased stress levels that lead to compromised physical health, mental health, social relationships, and increased emotional strain. This article reports on a project utilizing a modified Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach to understand the mechanisms that lead to increased stress levels among correctional officers who reported working overtime. The analysis utilizes organizational justice and social comparison frameworks to explore predictors of individual levels of stress among correctional officers working overtime in a Delaware prison. The findings indicate that individual-level stress spreads through perceptions of coworker's stress and is inversely related to perceived levels of organizational justice. This analysis is useful to prison administrators, leadership, in suggesting avenues to improve the climate of correctional environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prison reform in Colorado has been halting, despite political and cultural conditions that are broadly conducive to making meaningful changes to correctional policies and practices. These conditions led to Colorado being chosen for the Prison Research and Innovation Network—a five-state consortium given funding to engineer change in one facility in each state through an action research process using community-based participatory methods. This article describes findings from the action research process in Sterling Correctional Facility—the selected project site in Colorado. The management, the staff, and the people incarcerated in this facility have generally welcomed reform efforts, but change has occurred slowly and with less effect than expected. Using an engaged participant observation approach, along with survey and in-depth interview data collected during the research process, we map the ecology of facility-level change and how local conditions have shaped the pace and reach of innovation efforts. We offer recommendations related to the reality of state-level and facility-level prison reform, especially around the need to deeply understand and be responsive to the cultural, political, and institutional environments in which change is expected to occur. This study was part of a 5-year Prison Research and Innovation Network (PRIN) project to explore the shared perceptions of the prison climate among incarcerated women. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) was used to partner with incarcerated women as equal partners in the project. Focus group interviews were conducted with the incarcerated women in the fall of 2020. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify incarcerated women's perceptions of prison climate in the correctional facility. An item pool was developed from the themes identified, and a new prison climate survey was administered to 436 incarcerated women. Structural equation modeling was conducted to examine the relationship between prison activity, correctional practices, and preparedness for re-entry. The results indicated the importance of prison activities, as incarcerated women who reported that the prison offers sufficient activities were more likely to feel supported and had a more positive view of the board of parole, which were in turn associated with preparedness for re-entry. Policies targeted toward creating prison activities and programs for re-entry should become a priority for prison leadership and the department of corrections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Correctional institutions have historically faced challenges in hiring and maintaining a workforce, which only increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Considerable turnover in staff in recent years has led some states to lower the age of hiring eligibility, which in turn increases the number of new and younger officers on the job. This study explores the challenges and opportunities that the unprecedented change in the workforce in one Midwestern prison has had on workplace morale and strain. This study uses data from semi-structured interviews with a diverse group of correctional employees. We find a considerable disconnect between "new" and "old" correctional officers and offer policy solutions for future staffing practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the feasibility of capturing antimicrobial usage data from prisons for inclusion in the Antimicrobial Use and Resistance in Australia (AURA) surveillance system and to analyse 2021 and 2022 South Australian (SA) usage data for notable trends. Methods: Monthly antimicrobial supply data for eight SA prisons were collected. Antimicrobial volume was converted into the World Health Organization metric, defined daily doses (DDD). Usage rates were calculated relative to prison occupied bed days (OBD). Results: Annual usage of systemic antimicrobials across eight SA prisons totalled 26,448 DDD and 23,526 DDD in 2021 and 2022 respectively. Antibacterials accounted for 80.6% of all antimicrobials dispensed during the study period. The average antibacterial usage rate in female prisons was higher on average than in male prisons. The state-wide systemic antibacterial usage rate in SA prisons declined by 11.3% from 23.8 DDDs/1000 OBD in 2021 to 21.1 DDDs/1000 OBD. Doxycycline, amoxicillin, flucloxacillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, and cefalexin accounted for 72% of the total systemic antibacterial usage rate. Variation in the oral and topical antifungal agents used and the rate of use was observed between prisons. Conclusions: This SA pilot study demonstrates the feasibility of including prisons in routine national antimicrobial surveillance using similar methodology to hospital surveillance. The contributing facilities comprised 6.1% of all Australian prison beds, and extrapolation of the results suggests that the identified gap in surveillance may equate to over 400,000 DDD per annum in prisons nationwide, equating to approximately 5% of hospital inpatient antimicrobial usage. Surveillance of antimicrobial use is a useful tool to identify overuse or inappropriate use and enable targeted interventions to optimise antimicrobial prescribing and reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance. Well-being is defined as the multi-dimensional experience of positive emotions, as well as life satisfaction, autonomy, and purpose. This scoping review examines the impact of musical practices on the well-being of incarcerated individuals and uniquely contributes to the literature by focusing on the relationship between music and power in carceral settings and by expounding on the ways in which musical practices both facilitate and inhibit experiences of well-being. Our review contributes to this body of literature by proposing three distinct ways musical practices may affect well-being: (1) Musical Practices and Psychological Outcomes, (2) Musical Practices and Identity Formation and (3) Musical Practices and Power. Although studies have linked judicial intervention to inmate outcomes, it is unclear how the various reasons for which an institution is under court order predict the likelihood of inmate misbehavior, such as violence and other nonviolent forms of rule breaking. Data from the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities (SISCF) and the 2000 Census of State Correctional Facilities (CSCF) are used to examine how various prison violations affect inmate misconduct. Hierarchical linear models reveal that sweeping litigation and reforms that pose a greater challenge to correctional authority are associated with greater misconduct, while more targeted approaches appear to have a less pronounced or inverse association with misconduct. Background Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health concern, particularly within prison settings, where the confluence of adverse health factors and high-risk behaviors contribute to a heightened risk of transmission. This study delves into the perspectives of medical doctors, regarding the implementation of the 2014 TB protocol in Portugal. Methods The study has a qualitative, descriptive design. Individual semi-structured interviews with medical doctors from TB outpatient centers in Porto and Lisbon were used for data collection. For the analysis thematic analysis method was used. Results The study population comprised 21 medical doctors with the majority being female (61.9%) and 57.1% specializing in pulmonology. The results indicate varied perceptions of the protocol's usefulness, with positive impacts on coordination reported by some participants. Improved communication and evolving collaboration between TB outpatient centers and prisons were highlighted, although challenges in contact tracing and resource constraints were acknowledged. The study also sheds light on the role of nurses in patient education. Conclusion Despite overall positive perceptions, challenges such as sustaining therapy post-symptomatic improvement and delays in diagnostic methods were identified. The findings underscore the importance of continuous collaboration between prisons and TB control programs to address challenges, improve disease control and prevent TB transmission. People with disabilities experience significant health inequalities and inequities compared to people without disabilities. However, there is little evidence on the frequency of health conditions and their association with disability in the prison context. The aim of this study was to compare the proportions and associations between various health conditions and different disability indicators. A secondary analysis of existing data from the Ecuador Prison Census 2022 was conducted. The variable of interest was based on three disability indicators from the six-item Washington Group Short Set on Functioning. A cross-tabulation was carried out to estimate the proportion of prisoners with different disability indicators by gender. These proportions were also calculated for different health conditions. Moreover, we analyzed the association between each of the three disability indicators and the different health conditions using multivariable logistic regression. A total of 30,612 incarcerated persons were included in the analysis, revealing that 8% had disabilities. According to gender, a higher proportion of women had disabilities (10.7% vs. 8.5%), some difficulty functioning (33.8% vs. 28.0%), and multiple disabilities (2.4% vs. 2.0%) compared to men. Furthermore, people with disabilities had a higher proportion of health conditions compared to those without a disability. Strong and very strong evidence of associations were found between different disability indicators and several health conditions, while a lower odds of drug use was observed in people with disabilities and multiple disabilities compared to their counterparts, and no evidence of association was found with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. Our results reflect the health inequalities and inequities experienced by prisoners with disabilities. In the United States, suicide is a leading cause of death in prisons and jails, with incarcerated individuals being nine times more likely to die by suicide than the general population. Identifying vulnerabilities at each stage of custody (prebooking, jail, prison) and factors that increase suicide risk can improve prevention efforts. A hierarchical binary logistic regression was conducted on data from the Texas Justice Initiative's Deaths in Custody Report. Variables included race/ethnicity, sex, age at death, days in custody, classification of crime as violent or nonviolent, and custody type of prebooking, jail, or prison. Among main effects, when compared to suicide rates in prison, jail suicide deaths were over three and a half times more likely (OR = 3.61), and the period of prebooking emerged as a period of staggering risk of suicide death, with suicides being over 5,000% more likely than at other stages of custody (OR = 50.86). When interactions were entered, Latinx individuals were at a particularly increased risk of suicide death (OR = 10.46), likelihood of suicide death decreased with each year of age (OR =.89), nonviolent offenders were just under three and a half times more likely to die by suicide when compared to violent offenders (OR = 3.45), and each stage of custody was shown to affect the relationship between age-related rates of suicide in different ways. Results call for further investigation into suicide among understudied populations in corrections, such as Latinx individuals, juveniles in the prison system, and nonviolent offenders, to identify the groups at the highest risk of premature death in correctional systems. The case fatality rate (CFR) is an important metric in the correctional setting because it permits assessment of the lethality of an infectious agent independent of its underlying variations in transmissibility and incidence. Several studies have reported that incarceration is associated with both increased COVID-19 incidence and mortality. CFR, sometimes referred to as infection fatality rate for COVID-19, was used to compare mortality in a population at two points in time. A retrospective cohort study design was used to assess age-adjusted mortality among people diagnosed with COVID-19 in the Texas prison system and the Texas nonincarcerated population from January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2021. For each 6-month period under study, the Texas prison population had a substantially lower age-adjusted CFR compared with the Texas nonincarcerated population. However, in the absence of information on underlying COVID-19 severity, comorbidities, and other potential confounding factors in these two populations, it is difficult to make strong inferences based on a comparison of their CFRs. Future research, with careful attention to bias and confounding, should examine the specific health system factors that may be used to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with infectious disease outbreaks in prisons. Contraband negatively affects the safety and security of correctional institutions. Extant research has relied on descriptive analyses or limited measures of contraband. Drawing upon established theories of institutional misbehavior—the deprivation model, importation model, and management perspective–the study examines facility-level and correctional population characteristic correlates of contraband in 301 prisons across six U.S. states. Findings confirm the relevance of individually examining risk factors by type of contraband, including drugs, cellphones, weapons, and total contraband. Lower security prisons, prisons providing substance use treatment, and those employing more women staff had fewer contraband drugs, weapons, and cellphones. Background: An ageing prison population with complex health needs combined with punitive sentencing practices means palliative care for incarcerated individuals is increasingly important. However, there is limited evidence regarding the models of care delivery in high-income countries, and their associated challenges and benefits. Aim: To develop a typology of models of palliative care provision for incarcerated individuals, synthesise evidence of their outcomes and describe facilitators of and challenges in delivering different models of palliative and end-of-life care in prisons. Design: Scoping review following Arksey and O'Malley, with narrative synthesis. The protocol was registered prospectively (reviewregistry1260). Data sources: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, the Social Sciences Citation Index and grey literature were searched on 15th March 2023. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used for quality appraisal. Results: A total of 16,865 records were screened; 22 peer-reviewed articles and 18 grey literature sources met the inclusion criteria. Three models were identified: Embedded Hospice, Outsourcing Care and Community Collaboration. The Embedded Hospice model shows potential benefits for patients and prisons. Outsourcing Care may miss opportunities for comprehensive care. Collaborative Care relies on proactive prison-community relationships that could be formalised for improvement. Psychosocial and bereavement needs of those dying in prison and their caregivers lack sufficient documentation. Conclusion: Further research is needed to evaluate prison hospice costs and examine how prison hospices impact compassionate release usage. Beyond the USA, policies might formalise care pathways and recognise best practices. Further investigation to address psychosocial needs of people in prison with life-limiting illnesses and post-death bereavement support is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article contributes to the literature on interreligious engagement in prison from the perspective of Christian religious educational and missional ministry. It uses a case study conducted in the Class IIA Women's Correctional Institution in Semarang, Indonesia. In Indonesia, educational and missional ministry in prisons plays a vital role in supporting prison services. This ministry is understood as part of the Christian mandate to serve those in prison, regardless of their religion. Though spiritual development for Christian inmates is also essential, it is important to consider a comprehensive interreligious engagement programme that includes art, creativity, and imagination, including batik‐making. Using a postcolonial feminist perspective, this article proposes practices relevant to prison ministry, especially for female inmates. The practices are both educational and missional. We call the interconnection between the educational and missional a liberating third space – a space of interreligious engagement that is relevant for female inmates in Indonesia. Demographic shifts toward an older and sicker prison population present challenges for corrections leaders and incarcerated people. The priority of custody and control over care in prisons can deprive people of a modicum of autonomy even about expressing their end-of-life wishes. This study was undertaken to inform best practices and identify essential components of end-of-life care planning (EOLCP) for people who will likely die incarcerated. Individual interviews with formerly incarcerated people (n = 16) provided insights on EOLCP knowledge, perceptions, and future plans as each reflected on experiences while incarcerated. Zoom Video Communications were used for the interviews, and audio recordings were transcribed verbatim, verified, and deidentified prior to thematic analysis. Themes were defined and discussed until consensus was reached between the 2 researchers. End-of-life care planning themes included the following: understanding of and experience with advanced directives/care planning (AD/ACP), defining AD/ACP, timing of AD/ACP accessibility to health care resources, how to approach EOLCP in prison, advantages of EOLCP, and barriers to EOLCP. Formerly incarcerated peoples' knowledge, perceptions, and future plans revealed important considerations when developing a contextually relevant toolkit for EOLCP for people living in prison. There has been an increase in female incarcerated offenders nationally and internationally. Despite this trend, literature and research on female offenders remain limited compared to their male counterparts. Evidence of the relationship between certain personality disorders and offending behaviour has led numerous countries to prioritise identifying and assessing personality disorders among the offender population. Psychopathic personality traits may contribute to women's risk factors for expressing antisocial behaviours, resulting in their potential future incarceration. Thus, a need exists to understand possible factors that may predict the expression of psychopathic traits in females, which may have notable utility among female offenders. This study aimed to investigate possible predictor variables of psychopathy amongst incarcerated female offenders in South Africa. A quantitative research approach, non-experimental research type, and correlational research design were employed. A convenience sampling technique was used. The sample consisted of 139 (N = 139) female offenders housed in two correctional centres in South Africa who voluntarily participated in this study. Correlation analyses and hierarchical regression analysis procedures were conducted to analyse the results. Results indicated (i) a certain combination of predictor variables that statistically and practically significantly explained both primary and secondary psychopathy and (ii) individual predictor variables (e.g., Impulsivity, Simple Tasks, Risk-Seeking, and Self-Centredness) that explained both primary and secondary psychopathy statistically and practically significantly. This study provides valuable information about the possible predictor variables of psychopathy amongst female offenders within the context of South Africa. People in prison often present with histories of trauma that can be difficult to process in the volatile prison environment. This article seeks to advance our understanding of the benefits of art therapy within a multidisciplinary team, and how it can help young men in prison who have experienced trauma. A review of the art therapy-informed interventions offered for trauma stabilisation in a service for young adult men in prison with complex needs is presented. This article discusses a trauma-informed service in the prison and the variety of ways in which art therapy can support people in prison with histories of complex trauma. It explores: the use of art therapy in a group focusing on improving the prison environment; the role of art therapy in supporting trauma stabilisation and the development of 'safe place' processing; and the use of art therapy tools to explore dissociation with service users prior to engaging in trauma therapy. The article highlights the vital role of art therapy as a non-verbal therapy to support young men to heal their past trauma. Reflections are offered on the importance of embedding art therapy within a service's trauma therapy pathway. It is recommended that research into the use of art therapy within prison settings is undertaken which could explore its utility in supporting people to process their trauma. This would provide further evidence for the role that non-verbal therapies may play in healing trauma. This article explores the benefits of art therapy in supporting young men with histories of trauma in prison in a multidisciplinary team. Trauma is a deeply personal and sensitive experience to explore in therapy. It can be very difficult for people in prison with histories of trauma to speak openly about their experiences. This can be made more challenging by the nature of the prison environment which can lead to ongoing traumatisation. The article discusses using art therapy to improve the environment within which the service sits. It explores the role of art therapy in trauma stabilisation as a precursor to engaging in trauma-processing therapies, and the use of visual tools in a trauma psychoeducation group, which were developed by an art psychotherapist. It also discusses the role of visual resources developed by the art psychotherapist to explore dissociation with the young men. The information in the article is helpful for those working with young people involved in the criminal justice system and for those working in prison implementing trauma-informed services and delivering trauma therapy. Background This study aimed to develop and validate a comprehensive tool designed to assess the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of incarcerated women. Methods A methodological study was conducted from January to March 2023 in two female prisons in Tehran and Hamedan, Iran. The participant pool consisted of women who had been incarcerated for a minimum of 6 months and were aged between 15 and 49 years. The instrument development involved two phases. Phase I involved a literature review and interviews with incarcerated women to understand their SRH needs. Phase II assessed psychometric properties to establish the scale's validity and reliability. Results The SRH Needs of Incarcerated Women (SRH-NIW) scale was refined, comprising 37 items across six domains: pregnancy and childbirth services, parenting services, family planning and sexual health services, personal and medical care services, screening services and infection control services. Exploratory factor analysis explained 66.15% of variance. The Content Validity Ratio and Content Validity Index were 0.8 and 0.94, respectively, indicating high content validity. Average Variance Extracted values ranged from 0.592 to 0.698. The whole scale showed a Cronbach's alpha of 0.823, and the Intra-class Correlation Coefficient was 0.879. Conclusion The SRH-NIW scale is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the SRH needs of incarcerated women. Both Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are prevalent in prison settings. Both often go undetected and untreated, while prisoners who already suffered previous trauma may be re-traumatised upon imprisonment. The current study aimed to conduct a national survey of all Welsh prisons to gather information about existing services and treatments for traumatic stress. The survey identified variation within Welsh prisons with regard to NICE-recommended evidence-based therapies. It is therefore recommended that there needs to be development of a pathway of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the prison system which should be achieved through a consensus process of both frontline staff and experts in the field. Due to the selectiveness of criminal systems and the context of social vulnerability, there is a high prevalence of health problems among individuals with a history of incarceration. When there is an insufficient level of health care, prior clinical conditions can worsen, and health education can be a response to this problem. Health education is a process of building health knowledge that is intended to facilitate thematic appropriation by the population that enables people to access, understand, and use health-related information for health improvement. In the context of criminal justice, health education can contribute to the successful transition of people who have experienced prison from their custody to the community setting. This study aimed to identify, synthesize, and critically evaluate peer-reviewed evidence concerning health education initiatives developed during or after incarceration aimed at people released from prison. A narrative review methodology was used to analyze 19 studies about health education interventions for prisoners or people who were arrested. Initiatives were identified in five countries, which showed differences in approaches, with motivational interviewing and group sessions standing out in the studies. All of them were grouped into the following themes: HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, alcohol, opioids and other substances, tuberculosis, and women's health. We have not performed a quality assessment of the studies included (using checklists such as PRISMA, AMSTAR, or SANRA) as this study is a narrative review and was not intended to be a systematic review or meta-analysis. Introduction: This study discusses the experiences of nurses in Spanish prisons during the HIV/AIDS pandemic, emphasizing administrative changes and adaptive measures, such as the creation of the Subdirectorate General of Penitentiary Health. Objective: We describe the experiences of nurses in Spanish penitentiary centers in the face of the HIV/AIDS. Materials and methods: The interpretative and phenomenological approach explored experiences between 1981 and 2023 through focus groups and convenience sampling. Participants were recruited through telephone calls and telematic meetings using Microsoft Teams. Four key themes were identified: the stigmatization of inmates, changes in nursing, the importance of training and resources, and equal treatment between genders. Results: The nursing vision focused on gathering information, providing comprehensive patient support, and sharing personal experiences. Discussion: This research provides a historical perspective on the adaptation of prison nursing to the pandemic, highlighting coping processes and suggesting future lines of research on the experiences of inmates, prison guards, and surveillance officers. Conclusions: We highlight the low media visibility of the pandemic in prisons, underlining the importance of understanding and valuing the nursing experience in prison settings during health crises. This work addresses the treatment that some Argentine prisons give to the bodies that pass through prisons from the perspective of detained women and their relatives. The proposal consists of exploring some stories linked to the ways in which mothers have gone through the deaths of their sons in the context of prison. It explores how violence is produced and reproduced in Argentine prisons and what the role of women is as detainees or family members in dealing with this pain. How is death processed when prison imposes its borders? What are the roles that men and women assume to process this pain? It also explores the specific ways of desubjectivizing pain that prison aims to impose, with the purpose of reflecting on the affective forms that people construct even in these contexts. The article is based on fieldwork begun ten years ago with relatives of detainees. It is a multi-situated ethnography that follows people linked to penal institutions. Purpose: Greener on the Outside for Prisons (GOOP) is a therapeutic horticulture programme targeting the high levels of complex health and social care needs in prisons in England. The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns led to unprecedented disruption in prisons in England. This paper examines the experiences of prisoners both during and post-lockdowns in four prisons, to understand the effects of participation in GOOP on health and wellbeing after the disruption of restrictions, and identify implications for developing this programme further. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on original qualitative data gathered from in-depth narrative-based interviews and focus groups with prisoners and staff in four English prisons. Audio data was transcribed and subject to a thematic analysis, drawing from a realist-informed lens. Findings: Thematic analysis revealed five key themes: reimagining the GOOP context; increasing empathy between participants; building sense of coherence; reconnecting with nature and a joined-up connection with provider services. The main arguments centre on horticulture in prisons remaining under-utilised as a means of promoting good health and wellbeing, although there is enthusiasm from staff to provide green spaces for the most vulnerable prisoners and develop a range of mechanisms to connect people in prison with nature. Originality/value: This paper focuses on new knowledge arising from an unprecedented situation in English prisons, from key stakeholders on the frontline of garden activities. This systematic review investigated the prevalence of prison-based interpersonal harm by type of victimization (physical and sexual) and sex, along with the heterogeneity among studies using meta-regression. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and the Meta-Analysis guidelines, 24 articles met the selection criteria. Study quality was assessed using the Joana Briggs Institute (20.8% deemed low quality, 33.3% moderate, and 45.9% high). Searches were conducted in Criminal Justice Abstracts, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science. The 24 articles comprised 36 separate samples inclusive of 23,967 incarcerated individuals. The random-effects pooled prevalence estimate of prison-based physical victimization was 18.8%, with slightly higher rates for females (20.3%) than males (18.1%). For sexual victimization, the pooled prevalence estimate was 12.4%, with higher rates among females (15.3%) than males (9.7%). For females, younger individuals reported higher rates of physical and sexual victimization and studies using smaller samples had higher rates of physical victimization. Rates of physical and sexual victimization for men were higher if perpetrators included residents and staff, the recall period was since admission, data was collected using self-administered surveys, and in low-quality studies (sexual victimization only). Rates of prison-based interpersonal harm, while high, varied significantly by type of victimization, sex, and study methodology. High heterogeneity will be reduced only if future studies adhere to best methodological practices in defining and collecting data on interpersonal harm and consistently test risk and prevention factors instrumental to prevention efforts. Study limitations include the exclusion of unpublished and non-English-language studies, small sample sizes for female studies, and methodological "noise" within the literature that reduce predictive precision. The architectural heritage directly related to the refugees from Europe who came to the USA as a result of World War II is still an under-researched topic. New post-war arrivals from the displaced persons camps resulted in a sizeable growth of the already well-established Lithuanian community, infusing it with highly educated professionals. This also included many architects who needed to adapt and continue their practice in a different environment while also finding a way to be useful for the objectives of their national group. The aim of this paper is to examine the architectural legacy of the Lithuanian community in the post-war decades in the USA, emphasizing buildings that were designed with a specific aspiration to implement national character. Research finds that buildings built for the Lithuanian community carried a strong symbolical language that was a peculiar, yet enriching case, in regard to the then-dominant mid-century modernist trends. These structures show the determination of the national group to use their built environment as a medium to reinforce their identity and use architecture as a political statement. The paper proposes to interpret this politically motivated and stylistically distinctive architecture as monuments testifying to the political atmosphere of the Cold War. In this article, I adopt the following hypothesis: the prison system in Poland of 1944–1956 was the effect of an imposed legal framework and administrative regulations that demoralized and destroyed the personal value system of the prison staff. I study the behavior of wardens in a situation of constant pressure and ideological control. I ask who were the people who created the prison system in Poland and how the penal system absorbed and shaped them. I use documents from the collection of the Prison Management Department of the Ministry of Public Security and the Central Prison Administration of the Ministry of Interior. I confront the emerging picture of attitudes and behaviors of prison officers with behavioral models developed by Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo based on their experiments conducted in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. In the first section, I present the legal and organizational issues of the prison system and the recruitment process for its employees. Next, I present the scope of professional and ideological formation of new staff and analyze the consequences of such preparation for the functions of a prison officer. In the following paragraphs, I reflect on what strategies of discomfort repression did the officers in Stalinist penal institutions assume. Background: People face numerous barriers to reentry and community integration following incarceration, and these obstacles manifest themselves as barriers to economic stability, housing security, healthcare, community acceptance, and educational attainment, ultimately leading to poor health. This study aims to understand healthcare needs of reentrants post release within the unique political and service context of Miami Dade County, FL, and seeks to uncover the structural facilitators and barriers to sustaining health during reentry. Methods: We report on a subset of data from a larger reentry asset mapping project. We conducted a qualitative thematic analysis based on 12 semi-structured interviews with community stakeholders, including reentrants who were released in the past year (n = 5) and with community providers who have provided support services to returning citizens for at least one year (n = 7). Narratives were coded through an iterative process using NVivo software and were analyzed using the general inductive approach. Results: Three themes emerged from the analysis: (1) social and structural barriers and facilitators to health during reentry, (2) challenges with medical care following release, and (3) long-term impacts of receiving poor healthcare in prison. Reentrants describe the carceral environment as non-conducive to health and cite an urgent need for systemic change within correctional institutions to promote their well-being. Respondents identified substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, trauma informed therapy, and chronic disease management as the primary healthcare needs of reentrants, and cite social support, stable housing, education, and employment as the key social and structural needs upon release. Conclusion: This study identifies prevalent resource gaps in Miami Dade County during reentry. Respondents advocate for more inclusive governmental housing programs, Medicaid expansion, and more holistic reentry programs to support reentrants. The article problematises the assumption that modern society is characterised by institutional differentiation as a unidirectional process. Inspired by Deleuze's sketch of the 'society of control', in this article the authors explore institutional de-differentiation in contemporary society. They illustrate the process of de-differentiation by developments in the penal institution, employing empirical materials from the Norwegian prison system. They show how this institution increasingly integrates (imports) elements from other institutions while expanding (exports) its activities into said institutions, resulting in a blurring of institutional borders. Furthermore, the question of institutional differentiation has been related to the question of social control in modern society. The authors discuss the characteristics of the social order of a de-differentiated society by drawing on Deleuze's social theory and arguing that de-differentiation gives rise to forms of power and social logics no longer restricted by institutional confinements. Escaping war and persecution during the twenty-tens, over two-million displacees made life-risking journeys into Europe. Trauma continued for those who managed to cross borders and reach new havens: grappling with migration systems, searching for decent housing, and striving for social integration. This article presents empirical findings of a multi-modal participatory mapping project conducted with refugees and asylum seekers in Southwest England, and highlights the impact of memory and deep creative mapping on the spatial practice of making-home in forced displacement. The resulting maps embody spaces of recovery; memoryscapes revealing synergies between the constructs of memory and the concept of home in exile. The essay we present in various voices aims to develop a profound ponder that reflects our journey through prisons as higher education teachers. Among our intentions is to systematize the pedagogical practice that we carry out based on the fact that we are not part of a penitentiary-reintegration pedagogy, which is why we are interested in exposing our teaching position from a critical approach towards the penitentiary system and its insistence on overshadowing everything that seeks to subvert or escape punishment as a notion that regulates and constrains subjectivity. Against the grain, we maintain that Education in Contexts of Punitive Confinement promotes spaces for dialogue that open processes of human dignity, recognizing subjects beyond the figure of the criminal. This is how we consider it relevant to analyze our teaching experience in prison, highlighting that it is part of a collaborative process where ethical and political positions also promote questioning the paradoxes entailed by the aspiration to make the right to education effective in confinement. How do objects narrate the past, the everyday, and interrogate im/possible futures? How do they undo our 'ideas of home'? What affects do they gather and what subjectivities and different forms of intimacy do they call into conversation? This compendium article brings a visual artist together with nine early career academics researching and archiving fragments from homes in Egypt, Sudan, and Palestine (and their global connections). In doing so the piece offers different practices of narrating and visualising stories of and from home. The article moves from bridges and infrastructure to food and clothes and walls. Through attending to these fragments, the authors invoke questions about the ways in which objects archive colonialism, resistance, revolts, neoliberalism, consumerism, dispersion, migration, and exile. At the core of the article is the visual artist Azza Ezzat's creative interpretation of these nine stories, with a visual rendition that asks how fragments of home become interwoven aesthetically. Purpose: People in prisons have a high prevalence of poly-traumatisation throughout their life span. The behavioural and emotional sequalae of trauma are likely to be managed across the whole organisation. However, there is still a lack of clarity about the key components of a trauma-informed approach within the custodial context. This study aimed to gather in-depth knowledge of staff views on the components of an optimal trauma pathway in a prison and the organisational factors that influence its implementation. Design/methodology/Approach: The authors' research design is qualitative, involving in-depth, semi-structured interviews with eight members of staff from different professional backgrounds at a single prison in the UK that houses sentenced and remand prisoners. Data was analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings: Three super-ordinate themes were identified within the data. Firstly, components of a trauma-informed pathway included sub-themes of asking about what has happened and knowing how to respond; providing specialist approaches; enabling residents to cope; screening and detection; and a compassionate relational approach. Secondly, organisational factors were associated with sub-themes of culture and leadership, resources and systems and processes. Thirdly, staff factors were associated with sub-themes of skills development and training, staff well-being and support and staff attitudes. Practical implications: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD in prisons are under-detected, and there are complex psychosocial factors within prisons that mediate the effectiveness of psychological therapies. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study represents the first exploration of staff perspectives on the components of a trauma-informed pathway within custodial settings. Future directions should involve the piloting and evaluation of the components of the trauma-informed pathway, with a focus on longer-term outcomes and exploration of the organisational factors that impact on effectiveness. This article contributes to two well-worn areas of debate in classical Latin philology, relating to Ovid's Heroides. The first is the question of the authenticity (and, to a lesser extent the correct position) of the letter placed 15th in almost every collection—the so-called Epistula Sapphus (henceforth ES). The secondary question, although perhaps now less fervently debated, is the authenticity of the 'Double Heroides ', placed by those who accept them as letters 16–21. I employ a variety of methods drawn from the domain of computational stylometry to consider the poetics and the lexico-grammatical features of these elegiac poems in the broader context of a corpus of 'shorter' (from 20 to 546 lines) elegiac works from five authors (266 poems in all) representing most of classical elegy. Based on a variety of techniques, every measure gives clear indication that the poetic style of the Heroides is genuinely Ovidian, but distinctive; they can be accurately isolated from Ovid more broadly. The Single and Double Heroides split into two clear groups, with the ES grouped consistently with the single letters. Furthermore, by comparing the style of the letters with the 'early' (although there are complications in this label) works of the Amores and the late works of the Ex Ponto , the evidence supports sequential composition—meaning that the ES is correctly placed—and, further, supports the growing consensus that the double letters were composed significantly later, in exile. Background: Individuals who commit acts of violence in prisons are often placed in highly controlled environments called restrictive housing (i.e., solitary confinement), which can have severe physical and mental health consequences and does not reduce violence. As such, North Carolina prisons have introduced the rehabilitative diversion unit (RDU) to reduce the use of restrictive housing and reduce violence in prison. Methods: We evaluated the effect of the RDU on prison infractions. We compared rates of infractions by type (including violent infractions) among men enrolled in the RDU and men who were eligible for the RDU but placed in restrictive housing for control purposes (RHCP). We also evaluated sustained program impacts by comparing the hazard of first infraction among these same two groups of men after program completion, when they had returned to the general prison population. Finally, we compared the hazard of first promotion to a less restrictive custody level (medium custody) when these men had returned to the general prison population. Results: The primary analytic cohort was made up of 3128 men contributing 897,822 person-days. Adjusted rates of violent infractions were lower in the RDU than in RHCP (adjusted rate ratio: 0.6; 95% CI: 0.4, 1.1). All other categories of infractions, including drug-related infractions, occurred at higher rates during RDU, as compared to RHCP. In analyses of sustained program impacts, for most categories of infractions, there were no differences in the hazard of first infraction post-RDU and post-RHCP. However, the hazard of violent infraction post-RDU was higher (adjusted hazard ratio: 2.1; 95% CI: 1.1, 4.0) than post-RHCP. The hazard of promotion to a less restrictive custody level was higher post-RDU (adjusted hazard ratio: 17.4; 95% CI: 7.2, 42.2) than post-RHCP. Conclusions: We found the RDU program may be effective in reducing violence for men enrolled in the program, but that these benefits were not sustained. Continued programming may be a useful tool to transition men from the programmatically intensive environment of the RDU to the general prison population. Much is not known about education programmes for Nigerian incarcerated individuals. Consequently, different correctional institutions worldwide have different forms of correctional education offered to incarcerated individuals. Nigerian incarcerated individuals perceive that there are implementations of education programmes offered to them. However, little or nothing is known about how incarcerated individuals perceive these education programmes. To this end, this study ascertains the incarcerated individuals' perception of education programmes as well as the expectations of social work profession in ensuring that incarcerated individuals in correctional institutions are provided with quality education. In-depth interviews involving 20 convicted incarcerated individuals from Owerri correctional centre were conducted. Thematic analysis was used in analyzing data generated for the study. Findings show that education programmes are available and essential, but the quality of the programme does not go down well with the incarcerated individuals. It also revealed that incarcerated individuals were not allowed to decide on the type of education programme to be involved in. To this end, their participation in the programme is jeopardized. The findings further revealed that little or nothing is known about social workers in prison education. Therefore, the inclusion of correctional social workers as an integral part of education programmes that aim to reform, rehabilitate and reintegrate incarcerated individuals becomes necessary. Premise of research. During two recent field seasons in the Arctic Archipelago of Canada (Nunavut), assemblages of well-preserved plant macrofossils have been collected at five different sites from the Fosheim Member of the Heiberg Formation, which are here reported. Methodology. The plant fossils are analyzed, described, illustrated, and identified. The assemblage is compared with the other two reports of plant macrofossils from that area, and the overall vegetation of the Fosheim Member of the Heiberg Formation is put in relation to well-known Rhaetian–Hettangian macrofossil assemblages of Greenland, north-central Europe, and central and eastern Asia. Pivotal results. Among the sphenophytes and ferns, Neocalamites lehmannianus , Todites roessertii , Cladophlebis cf. ingens , and Dictyophyllum exile have been encountered; ginkgophytes are represented by three species (Ginkgoites taeniatus , Baiera minuta , and Sphenobaiera spectabilis) and conifers by two Podozamites species (Podozamites schenkii and Podozamites punctatus). For the bennettites, only one species could be identified, but this species (Otozamites micrauritus) was so far unknown from Arctic Canada and described only from the Rhaetian of South Korea. Cycads are absent. Taeniopteris sp. and Desmiophyllum sp. represent two species of so far unknown affinity. Conclusions. An evaluation of the composition of the flora, together with the fossiliferous sedimentary succession, indicates that the plants grew in a variety of exposed and disturbed habitats of wide floodplains within lowland, deltaic, or coastal plain settings or brackish to tidal mudflat areas, in a relatively warm climate with abundant rainfall and well-developed seasons. The age of the fossil-bearing strata is briefly discussed based on the stratigraphic information retrieved from the elsewhere occurrence of the identified taxa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To understand and improve the experiences of Black chaplains, it is essential to consider how they experience and are integrated into their workplaces. This article draws from interviews with ten Black chaplains in the military and prisons. In light of historic, state-sanctioned, discrimination in these institutions, we ask how these chaplains experience their workplaces racially. All experience racial burdens in the workplace as part of being the first or only Black chaplain or in response to overt racial discrimination. They identify few to no formal workplace efforts to support them as Black chaplains and spoke of resistance to informal efforts that have been tried over the years. State and federal workplaces must recognize the racial burdens Black chaplains' experiences and take action to respond to and support these systemic workplace issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Individuals from the community who volunteer within prisons are an understudied population, despite previous research indicating the increase in involvement of the penal voluntary sector and benefits to both prisons and prisoners from effective implementation of volunteer programmes. This study aimed to identify the characteristics, motivations and experiences of individuals who volunteer in prisons. This was a systematic review conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines. Peer-reviewed publications were identified through searchers of five electronic databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus, Applied Social Sciences Index & Abstracts and Social Sciences Database) without date restrictions, supplemented by hand searching and reference checking of retrieved articles. Explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria determined study eligibility. Study quality was appraised using standard tools. A narrative synthesis was conducted, and motivations were organised according to the Volunteer Function Inventory. Eight studies (five qualitative and three quantitative) reported a total of 764 volunteers across five countries. More than half of the included studies investigated individuals providing primarily religious volunteer support; volunteers in these studies were typically middle aged, White and female. Prison volunteers frequently described motivations related to altruistic or humanitarian values, as well as social reasons. Positive experiences of volunteering were related to personal benefits to volunteers. Negative experiences were related to a lack of support and challenges in volunteers' relationships with prison staff. Prison volunteer programmes have the ability to improve the psychological health of prisoners and provide a range of potential benefits to penal systems and volunteers themselves, but research on individuals who volunteer in prisons is limited. Difficulties in the volunteer role could be mitigated by developing formal induction and training packages, promoting closer integration with paid prison staff and providing ongoing supervision. This paper explores the narration of Héctor Llaitul, a historical reference of the Coordinadora Arauco-Malleco, an organization of armed resistance associated with the Mapuche people of southern Chile, regarding the historical facts exposed in La Araucana by Alonso de Ercilla. I establish a relationship between that epic text and Llaitul's principles and thoughts about the military and weichafe ethics in reference to Lautaro (Leftraru). There is an analysis about contradictions and political and identity complexities that Llaitul, along with Jorge Arrate, his co-author in Weichan who interviews him in prison, finds regarding the Araucanian-Mapuche legacy that is declared in the Chilean republican tradition and that actually comes from La Araucana. Social work in prisons is linked to specific tasks regarding the care for the people who are incarcerated. A multi-country qualitative study was set up to explore drug users' and professionals' perceptions of continuity of care in prison and beyond. It has been pointed out that continuity of care is associated with different barriers, especially regarding social work. Nevertheless, good practice examples do exist and could be implemented by social workers. Social workers and opioid users face challenges in the context of imprisonment, so different measures need to be implemented to support opioid users and for social workers to support them. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of women in prisons who have already had an HIV test inside prison and the factors associated with this test. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 1327 women in 15 prisons in 9 states in Brazil. Almost 60% (95% CI: 57.8–63.7) of women have already been tested for HIV in prison. The factors associated with this HIV test were age ≥41 years (OR = 1.9; 95% CI = 1.2–2.9), highest level of education (OR = 1.9; 95% CI = 1.3–2.8), having been arrested 3 or more times (OR = 1.9; 95% CI = 1.3–2.8), having received information about HIV/STI in the lifetime (OR = 1.4; 95% CI = 1.1–1.9) and perceived themselves to be at no risk for HIV infection (OR = 1.7; 95% CI = 1.2–2.5), black or mixed race (OR = 0.7; 95% CI = 0.5–0.9) and having a male sexual partner (OR = 0.6; 95% CI = 0.5–0.9). The Federal Bureau of Prisons clinical skills training development (CSTD) team accomplished the planning, creation, and execution of a first-ever national clinical skills assessment program (CSAP) for nurses and advanced practice providers (APPs). Clinical skills assessment is a part of nurse and APP credentialing and privileging and must be completed for new hires along with continued biennial recredentialing accreditation standards. A training resource manual, discipline-specific skills checklist, pre-/postprogram written examination, and standard operating procedures were created. The CSTD team used commercially available manikins, food items, and easily obtainable office supplies for simulated experiential skills assessments. The CSAP provided a consistent, reproducible, and scalable approach for the orientation, assessment, and, if indicated, remediation for correctional nurses and APPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our aim was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 cases in prison inmates in Spain and the control measures implemented to response to this public health challenge. Retrospective observational study. All COVID-19–confirmed cases reported to the Spanish information system in prisons between March 2020 and June 2022 were analyzed. Prevention plans and protocols established by penitentiary and health authorities were reviewed. Likewise, information on vaccines administered to prison inmates was described. A total of 8500 COVID-19 cases were reported to penitentiary public health surveillance. The overall cumulative incidence (CI) was 2054.18 cases per 10,000 inmate population. By epidemic periods, the average weekly CI was 1.15 per 10,000 inmate population during the first period, 6.91 during the second, 25.18 during the third, 3.53 during the fourth, 23.27 during the fifth, 34.72 during the sixth and 25.68 during the seventh period. The median age of cases was 49.2 years, 69.1% was born in Spain, 64.1% was asymptomatic and 16 cases died. Ninety-four percent were vaccinated. Control measures such as lockdown, suspending visitation rights and confining inmates in their cells were adopted at the beginning of the pandemic. These measures changed in accordance with the COVID-19 situation in the general population with a view to restoring the inmates' rights. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a moderate incidence in Spanish prisons. Hospitalization and CFR were lower than the general population. On June 7th, 2019, Layleen Xtravaganza Cubilette-Polanco, a transgender woman from New York, died at Rikers Island while in solitary confinement. According to officials from the Department of Corrections, Layleen's death was a result of a series of interrelated health problems.. Trans, queer, and gender non-conforming people, especially youth of colour and Black trans women, face heightened rates of homelessness, violent victimisation, barriers to housing, employment, and healthcare. These social conditions are tied to heightened engagement in survival sex work, over-policing, and surveillance of their communities. As a result, Trans and queer people are disproportionately impacted by mass incarceration, and must contend with the nexus of a system that functions on racist and colonial legal construction of gender, making carceral spaces sites of (in)visibility and death. The death of Trans people within these carceral spaces are followed by multiple discursive deaths, including the use of dead names in media, misgendering, and transphobic political debate. This paper aims to highlight and explore carceral settings as sites of death and (in)visbility for Trans and queer people and how reframing allows us to identify how (neo)liberal reforms meant to protect Trans people only entrench mass incarceration in the United States.
