Purpose: The topic of corporate social responsibility is already present in many areas and spheres of economic life. In many cases, it determines the strategies of companies. Therefore, the article aims to examine the development and role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in management and sustainable economy. Emphasis will be placed on an overview of the most important international promotion initiatives. Finally, CSR and its development in Poland were discussed. Design/Methodology/Approach: The article uses the descriptive method. It consisted in the separation and identification of a specific phenomenon, which is the development of corporate social responsibility initiatives. Findings: Our findings suggest that the common element in all definitions is a broad category of stakeholders and the CRS definition determined by the standard quality, the ISO 26000. The important place in CSR idea is currently caring for the natural environment. Practical Implications: Efforts to encourage enterprises to the implementation of CSR principles which it is possible to build a positive image of the company and the trust and loyalty of its stakeholders. Therefore, such initiatives should be supported by government funding schemes and heavily promoted. Communities across Canada rely heavily on natural resources for their livelihoods. One such community in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, has both benefited and suffered, because of its proximity to a pulp and paper mill (currently owned by Northern Pulp). Since production began in 1967, there have been increasing impacts to the local environment and human health. Environmental reports funded by the mill were reviewed and compared against provincial and federal regulatory compliance standards. Reports contrasted starkly to societal perceptions of local impacts and independent studies. Most environmental monitoring reports funded by the mill indicate some levels of compliance in atmospheric and effluent emissions, but when compliance targets were not met, there was a lack of regulatory enforcement. After decades of local pollution impacts and lack of environmental compliance, corporate social responsibility initiatives need implementing for the mill to maintain its social licence to operate.

La Responsabilidad Social (RSE) es una temática que ha adquirido gran interés a finales de los 90 del siglo pasado, esta materia nace a raíz de la crisis financiera, más exactamente después de la crisis de la burbuja tecnológica mejor conocida como el fenómeno “Punto Com”, esta crisis produjo poca credibilidad en las compañías, desequilibró en la legitimación social de grandes firmas. Desde ese momento comenzó la tendencia de relaciones entre la empresa y la sociedad, con un conjunto de requerimientos hacia el comportamiento ético y responsable de las empresas. Así, la cultura de la RSE “empieza a defender la idea de que la contribución al bienestar y a la calidad de vida debe ser la meta de todas las instituciones sociales, por supuesto también de la empresa, sea lucrativa o no, y desde diferentes organismos internacionales y grupos multisectoriales impulsar el desarrollo de estándares, códigos de conducta, directrices, normas y otros instrumentos para facilitar la puesta en marcha de prácticas más honestas, de trasparencia en la gestión o de respeto al medio ambiente, entre otras” (Franch, 2007). Teniendo en cuenta este preámbulo hacia el concepto de RSE en el presente trabajo se desea identificar si este tema está siendo aplicado en los servicios que presta la Empresa Barcelona Activa, la cual está ubicada en Barcelona, una ciudad con 1.601.993 habitantes (Barcelona, 2014), es una de las más pobladas en la Unión Europea, en la actualidad Cataluña es el motor industrial de España con una participación en el PIB del 20% y ¼ de las exportaciones españolas; además que tiene uno de los puertos más importantes del mundo, cuenta con economías de servicios fuertes tales como: energías renovables, educación superior y turismo. Barcelona Activa es una empresa que se dedica desde hace más de 25 años a ejecutar las políticas de promoción económica del ayuntamiento de Barcelona, ofreciendo ayuda a las empresas a crear la iniciativa emprendedora y el empleo, ligado también a mostrar al país como un excelente escenario de la actividad económica y el progreso social. From that moment the trend of relations between the company and society began, with a set of requirements towards ethical and responsible behavior of companies. Thus, the culture of CSR "begins to defend the idea that the contribution to well-being and quality of life should be the goal of all social institutions, of course also of the company, whether profit or not, and from different organizations international and multisectoral groups promote the development of standards, codes of conduct, guidelines, norms and other instruments to facilitate the implementation of more honest practices, transparency in management or respect for the environment, among others ”(Franch, 2007 ). Taking into account this preamble to the concept of CSR in this work, we want to identify if this topic is being applied in the services provided by the Barcelona Activa Company, which is located in Barcelona, ​​a city with 1,601,993 inhabitants (Barcelona, 2014), is one of the most populated in the European Union, Catalonia is currently the industrial engine of Spain with a share in GDP of 20% and ¼ of Spanish exports; In addition to having one of the most important ports in the world, it has strong service economies such as: renewable energy, higher education and tourism. Barcelona Activa is a company that has been dedicated for more than 25 years to executing the economic promotion policies of the Barcelona city council, offering help to companies to create entrepreneurship and employment, also linked to showing the country as an excellent setting of economic activity and social progress.
