Abstract

The article discusses the possibility of a giant super-flare being released by the Sun and temporarily damaging technology on Earth. Details about the Sun's storm cycle and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun which cause the Solar super-storms are presented. The Solar super-storm of 1859 is investigated and the implications of a similar storm happening again are also discussed.

Abstract

The author reflects on the dangers brought by solar storms. He states that solar storms can be terribly disruptive and teaches lessons about how technology is as vulnerable as it is indispensable. He cites that the Sun has spawned 122 X-class flares and a remarkable 11,031 coronal mass ejections since 1996. He asserts that the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration has launched more satellites to study interactions between the sun and the Earth.
