The collector ring (CR) of the proposed GSI project FAIR includes a fast stochastic cooling system for exotic nuclei and antiprotons. To reach a good signal to noise ratio of the pick-up even with a low number of particles, a novel pick-up and kicker electrode system based on slotlines is presented. The sensitivity and noise properties of electrode models are calculated. These are compared with other types of electrodes. Different options for signal processing and layout of a pick-up or kicker with many electrodes for different beam velocities are discussed. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stochastic Cooling is presently used at the existing storage ring ESR as a first stage of cooling for secondary heavy ion beams. In the frame of the FAIR project at GSI, stochastic cooling is planned to play a major role for the preparation of high quality antiproton and rare isotope beams. The paper describes the existing ESR system, the first stage cooling system at the planned Collector Ring, and will also cover first steps toward the design of an antiproton collection system at the planned RESR ring. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
