The Waipaoa River Sedimentary System in New Zealand, a focus site of the MARGINS Source-to-Sink program, contains both a terrestrial and marine component. Poverty Bay serves as the interface between the fluvial and oceanic portions of this dispersal system. This study used a three-dimensional hydrodynamic and sediment-transport numerical model, the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS), coupled to the Simulated WAves Nearshore (SWAN) wave model to investigate sediment-transport dynamics within Poverty Bay and the mechanisms by which sediment travels from the Waipaoa River to the continental shelf. Two sets of model calculations were analyzed; the first represented a winter storm season, January–September, 2006; and the second an approximately 40 year recurrence interval storm that occurred on 21–23 October 2005. Model results indicated that hydrodynamics and sediment-transport pathways within Poverty Bay differed during wet storms that included river runoff and locally generated waves, compared to dry storms driven by oceanic swell. During wet storms the model estimated significant deposition within Poverty Bay, although much of the discharged sediment was exported from the Bay during the discharge pulse. Later resuspension events generated by Southern Ocean swell reworked and modified the initial deposit, providing subsequent pulses of sediment from the Bay to the continental shelf. In this manner, transit through Poverty Bay modified the input fluvial signal, so that the sediment characteristics and timing of export to the continental shelf differed from the Waipaoa River discharge. Abstract: A three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic-sediment transport model for the Texas–Louisiana continental shelf was developed using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and used to represent fluvial sediment transport and deposition for the year 1993. The model included water and sediment discharge from the Mississippi River and Atchafalaya Bay, seabed resuspension, and suspended transport by currents. Input wave properties were provided by the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model so that ROMS could estimate wave-driven bed stresses, critical to shallow-water sediment suspension. The model used temporally variable but spatially uniform winds, spatially variable seabed grain size distributions, and six sediment tracers from rivers and seabed. At the end of the year 1993, much of the modeled fluvial sediment accumulation was localized with deposition focused near sediment sources. Mississippi sediment remained within 20–40km of the Mississippi Delta. Most Atchafalaya sediment remained landward of the 10-m isobath in the inner-most shelf south of Atchafalaya Bay. Atchafalaya sediment displayed an elongated westward dispersal pattern toward the Chenier Plain, reflecting the importance of wave resuspension and perennially westward depth-averaged currents in the shallow waters (<10m). Due to relatively high settling velocities assumed for sediment from the Mississippi River as well as the shallowness of the shelf south of Atchafalaya Bay, most sediment traveled only a short distance before initial deposition. Little fluvial sediment could be transported into the vicinity of the “Dead Zone” (low-oxygen area) within a seasonal–annual timeframe. Near the Mississippi Delta and Atchafalaya Bay, alongshore sediment-transport fluxes always exceeded cross-shore fluxes. Estimated cumulative sediment fluxes next to Atchafalaya Bay were episodic and “stepwise-like” compared to the relatively gradual transport around the Mississippi Delta. During a large storm in March 1993, strong winds helped vertically mix the water column over the entire shelf (up to 100-m isobath), and wave shear stress dominated total bed stress. During fair-weather conditions in May 1993, however, the freshwater plumes spread onto a stratified water column, and combined wave–current shear stress only exceeded the threshold for suspending sediment in the inner-most part of the shelf. Turbidity currents deliver sediment rapidly from the continental shelf to the slope and beyond; and can be triggered by processes such as shelf resuspension during oceanic storms; mass failure of slope deposits due to sediment- and wave-pressure loadings; and localized events that grow into sustained currents via self-amplifying ignition. Because these operate over multiple spatial and temporal scales, ranging from the eddy-scale to continental-scale; coupled numerical models that represent the full transport pathway have proved elusive though individual models have been developed to describe each of these processes. Toward a more holistic tool, a numerical workflow was developed to address pathways for sediment routing from terrestrial and coastal sources, across the continental shelf and ultimately down continental slope canyons of the northern Gulf of Mexico, where offshore infrastructure is susceptible to damage by turbidity currents. Workflow components included: (1) a calibrated simulator for fluvial discharge (Water Balance Model - Sediment; WBMsed); (2) domain grids for seabed sediment textures (dbSEABED); bathymetry, and channelization; (3) a simulator for ocean dynamics and resuspension (the Regional Ocean Modeling System; ROMS); (4) A simulator (HurriSlip) of seafloor failure and flow ignition; and (5) A Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbidity current model (TURBINS). Model simulations explored physical oceanic conditions that might generate turbidity currents, and allowed the workflow to be tested for a year that included two hurricanes. Results showed that extreme storms were especially effective at delivering sediment from coastal source areas to the deep sea, at timescales that ranged from individual wave events (~hours), to the settling lag of fine sediment (~days). Large river deltas serve as globally important archives of terrestrial and shallow marine biogeochemical signatures and because of rapid sedimentation have the potential to impact global biogeochemical cycling. The Ayeyarwady Delta in Myanmar ranks as the world's third largest river delta in terms of sediment supply; however, modern increases in regional anthropogenic impacts risk severe alteration to sediment and TerrOC loads within this major system. By investigating modern sediment and terrestrial organic carbon (TerrOC) accumulation within the offshore Ayeyarwady Delta this study estimates baseline sediment and TerrOC budgets for this understudied mega-delta. Using 210Pb geochronology of 27 sediment cores collected from the continental shelf, we estimate that 405 (+52/-47) Mt of sediment, or ~70‐80% of fluvial sediment discharged from the Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin rivers (the main inputs to the delta), accumulates there annually. Sediment not retained on the shelf is likely partitioned between the Ayeyarwady floodplain, shoreline accretion, and minor deep-sea export. Estimates of TerrOC (based on δ13C mixing models) were coupled with modern sediment accumulation rates to determine an annual burial of 1.93 (+1.09/-0.15) Mt C on the shelf, with TerrOC burial fluxes being highest in the foreset beds of the subaqueous delta, coincident with the area of highest sediment accumulation rate. Based on estimates of the Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin rivers' TerrOC delivery, an apparent ~100% of TerrOC input is preserved on the continental shelf. However, an across shelf trend of increasing TerrOC degradation with distance offshore is also observed, indicating that while the shelf has high apparent TerrOC sequestration, carbon remineralization is also occurring prior to deposition within the subaqueous delta. Based on these conflicting outcomes, we suggest that input of TerrOC from additional sources other than the Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin rivers roughly balance the observed carbon remineralization. Main additional sources of TerrOC include the Sittang and several smaller rivers, and the Ayeyarwady delta plain below the river gauging station. As anthropogenic development within the Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin watersheds continues to increase, these sediment and TerrOC budgets provide a baseline from which future changes within the offshore Ayeyarwady Delta can be monitored. • ~80% of the Ayeyarwady-Thanlwin sediment load is trapped on the continental shelf. • Terrestrial organic carbon (wt%) decreases with increased distance offshore, suggesting significant remineralization. • High apparent terrestrial organic carbon sequestration is attributed to unaccounted inputs, e.g. the Ayeyarwady floodplain. • The subaqueous clinoform is the primary depocenter for Ayeyarwady-Thanlwin sediment and particulate organic carbon. Abstract: Multiple sediment transport and reworking processes influence fine, cm-scale strata formation and long-term accumulation on the Waiapu River shelf, New Zealand. Gravity cores collected during two cruises, in August 2003 and May 2004, were analyzed using 7Be and 210Pb geochronologies, bulk carbon, δ 13C, X-radiographs, and grain-size to investigate sediment mixing and accumulation patterns. The presence of 7Be on the inner- and mid-shelf regions (<~80m) indicated recent (within the last 4–5 months) deposition of fluvial muds, whereas the distribution of excess 210Pb accumulation rates revealed that the middle to outer shelf (50–130 m) acted as fine sediment repositories on longer time scales. Excess 210Pb accumulation rates were high, with an area weighted average of 1.1±0.1 cm/yr and ranging between 0.2 and 3.5 cm/yr, yet were localized such that only an estimated ~23% (ranging between 17 and 38%) of the fluvial load was retained on the shelf between 40 and 200 m depths over the last 80 to 100 yr. Sediments not retained on the shelf were either transported to deeper waters or along the shelf beyond the sampling area. Several cores collected from the high sediment accumulation zone on the middle to outer shelf exhibited non-steady state excess 210Pb profiles, suggesting that multiple transport processes influenced fine-scale strata formation. Layers of low excess 210Pb activity and predominantly terrestrial δ 13C and C/N values were likely formed during floods, when sediments were rapidly deposited and buried on the shelf. These event layers were sufficiently thick (up to ~20 cm), such that all or a portion of the initial flood layer immediately transited through the surface mixing layer, ensuring preservation in the sediment record. Sediments inter-bedded with these event layers reflected a relatively marine source indicating either that they were not deposited rapidly or were significantly bioturbated. A gradient of physical and biological mixing signatures, extending radially from the Waiapu River mouth, suggested that high background accumulation rates and flood deposits negatively impacted the preservation of biological structures and enhanced preservation of event-produced beds. We combine direct observations, longer-term wave data, and model calculations to characterize resuspension and transport of fine-grained, effluent-affected sediment on the Palos Verdes shelf. Near-bed waves, currents, and suspended sediment concentrations were monitored during the winter of 1992–93 with a bottom tripod and current-meter mooring at a 63-m-deep site. Wave conditions that winter were moderate (∼2 year recurrence interval), and mean current was alongshelf to the northwest; currents were not significantly correlated with wave conditions. Seven wave events during the winter (December–March) produced near-bed wave orbital velocities at the study site in excess of 14 cm s−1, the observed threshold for significant resuspension. Three of these events occurred during the bottom tripod deployment and are characterized by the highest persistent suspended sediment concentrations in the tripod record. Suspended sediment flux was alongshelf to the northwest for 5 of the 6 wave events for which current data were available; one event occurred during low southeast currents. Measured suspended sediment concentration and grain size generally agree with values that were calculated using a shelf sediment transport model with no adjustment of parameters from values determined for two muddy sites on the northern California shelf. We extend our seasonal observations to a period of almost 2 decades by applying the observed thresholds for wave-driven resuspension to near-bed wave conditions calculated from NDBC Buoy 46025 surface wave data. An average of 10 resuspension events per year, with an average duration of 1.6 days, were identified at a water depth of 60 m; the number of events dropped to 3 per year at 90 m, beyond the shelf break. For the majority of these events, calculated net suspended sediment flux is toward the northwest (alongshelf) at an average rate of 140 kg m−1 h−1; about a third of the events have net southeastward flux at an average rate of 30 kg m−1 h−1. An ephemeral oceanic-flood deposit adjacent to a well-studied small mountainous river (SMR), the Waipaoa River in northeastern New Zealand, was characterized using multiple proxies, including radioisotopes ( 234 Th, 7 Be, and 210 Pb), bulk organic carbon abundance and isotopic signature (%OC, δ 13 C), as well as a biomarker of terrigenous organic matter (lignin). Field sampling was conducted within two weeks after a 1-in-8 year flood that occurred between January 30 and February 6, 2010. Geochemical analyses indicated that initial deposition of fresh riverine material extended alongshore to the north and south from the river mouth. A comparison of prior- and post-flood 7 Be inventories revealed that flood sediments were widely dispersed between 20 and 70 m water depth, accounting for 50–80% of the estimated flood load. Surface (0–2 cm) isotopic carbon values increased with distance from Poverty Bay, positively correlating with total 210 Pb activities, potentially reflecting increasing marine influence with water depth. Abundances of sedimentary organic carbon (OC) were 0.18–0.76% dry weight, and the total nitrogen varied from 0.02 to 0.13%. Stable isotope signatures of carbon (δ 13 C OC ), nitrogen (δ 15 N), and lignin abundances (λ 6 ) throughout the study area ranged from −23.6 to −27.7‰, 1.9 to 5.3‰, and 0.93 to 9.0 mg 100 mg OC −1 , respectively. The spatial distribution pattern of terrigenous organic matter (OM) abundance and interclass ratios (indicative of freshness of organic matter) varied along and across-shelf. Lignin abundances were high and interclass ratios were low in the southern depocenter and inner shelf areas, suggesting that this zone had recently received vascular-plant enriched OM, minimally altered by shelf-bed mixing processes. In contrast, sediments in the northern depocenter and outer shelf also contained elevated amounts of terrigenous sedimentary OM, but this material was generally lower in lignin abundance and had higher interclass ratios (greater degradation). Collectively, these results suggest that the flood-derived sediment and fresh terrigenous OM were mostly constrained between 20 and 70 m water depth, with enhanced deposition overlapping the tectonic-controlled depocenters located to the northeast and southeast of Poverty Bay.
