Recent observations confirm the Indo-Pacific Little Tern Sternula albifrons sinensis has been extending its breeding range in Western Australia in recent years, following a pattern documented in other tern and noddy species on the western coast of Australia. Nesting Indo-Pacific Little Terns have been recorded annually as far south as North West Cape since 2016. A similar southward shift in breeding range may have occurred during the last interglacial period and it is hypothesised that Little Terns isolated at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands during the following glacial period gave rise to the Australian Fairy Tern Sternula nereis nereis. The Australian Fairy Tern subsequently colonised the continental shelf from Dampier, Western Australia to the south-eastern states and then New Zealand as sea levels rose again during the Holocene. The two former sibling species are now sympatric between Dampier and North West Cape and interbreeding and hybridisation have the potential to occur in that area. Most jurisdictions require populations to be defined at the species or subspecies level in order to be listed and managed as threatened. However, relying on such taxonomic criteria has the potential to obscure the management of threats faced by each inter-breeding population unit. Approaches that identify and protect the sub-structure of superspecies and meta-populations might be more effective in the longer term. This contribution documents a breeding range extension of the Indo-Pacific Little Tern Sternula albifrons sinensis in Western Australia, following a pattern documented in other tern and noddy species. Understanding the temporal‐spatial patterns of modern and relict sediments is of importance for assessing changes in the Quaternary environment and sea‐level. Sedimentological and geochemical data is presented, along with in situ shell‐based accelerator mass spectrometry 14C ages of 30 samples from the surface sediments on the northern shelf of the South China Sea (NSSCS). The authors' data show that the NSSCS surface sediments exhibit considerable diversity in composition. Modern sediments are primarily constrained to the NW inner shelf, which is fed by fluvial sands sourced from Coastal South China river systems and dominated by the Pearl River Estuary delivery. The transport and discharge of the terrestrial sediments to the NSSCS is highly influenced by the Guangdong Longshore Current and its secondary cyclonic eddies. Relict sediments dominated by well‐sorted, medium‐ and coarse‐grained sands were identified in the NW Shenhu and NW Dongsha areas of the outer NSSCS. The sedimentology and geochemistry of the relict sediments imply that they were deposited in a dry and cold environment either during the low sea levels of the late Pleistocene (∼40 ka) or the early Holocene (∼10 ka). To the east, the Taiwan Shoal and vicinity are dominated by a sand mixture, at which the relict sediments were reworked by terrigenous supply and modern hydrodynamic environment due to the compound action of the Guangdong Longshore Current, seasonal cyclones, and Kuroshio Intrusion. The present isobaths of ∼−90 m in the NSSCS might be the reflective of the early Holocene coastal delta or the last glacial maximum shoreline. Plain Language Summary: Reconstructing the temporal‐spatial pattern for relict sediments in shelf environments is an important way of determining the shoreline or coastal delta position during the late glacial period or the early Holocene. The largest and longest zone of the relict sediments has been traditionally suggested to be along the outer shelf of the East Asian continental margin from Malaya to Korea across the NSSCS. However, less attention has been paid to the NSSCS relict sediments despite the fact that much research has documented the sediment supply, Holocene environment, and marine resource surveys. The authors' data revealed the development of the modern sediments in the NW inner shelf and the relict sediments in the NW Shenhu and NW Dongsha areas of the NSSCS outer shelf. The relict sediments were sourced from Coastal South China and SW Taiwan, and have a distinct depositional environment in comparison with that of the modern sediments. The Canadian Arctic Southern Beaufort Sea is characterized by prominent relict submarine permafrost and gas hydrate occurrences formed by subaerial exposure during extensive glaciations in Pliocene and Pleistocene. Submarine permafrost is still responding to the thermal change as a consequence of the marine transgression that followed the last glaciation. Submarine permafrost is still underexplored and is currently the focus of several research projects as its degradation releases greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. In this study, seismic reflection indicators are used to investigate the presence of submarine permafrost and gas hydrates on the outer continental shelf where the base of permafrost is expected to cross‐cut geological layers. To address the challenges of marine seismic data collected in shallow water environments, we utilize a representative synthetic model to assess the data processing and the detection of submarine permafrost and gas hydrate by seismic data. The synthetic model allows us to minimize the misinterpretation of acquisition and processing artifacts. In the field data, we identify features along with characteristics arising from the top and base of submarine permafrost and the base of the gas hydrate stability zone. This work shows the distribution of the present submarine permafrost along the southern Canadian Beaufort Sea region and confirms its extension to the outer continental shelf. It supports the general shape suggested by previous works and previously published numerical models. Plain Language Summary: Submarine permafrost, ground beneath the seafloor that perennially remains below 0°C, is present on the continental shelf of the Canadian Beaufort Sea. During the Late Pleistocene (∼1 Million years ago), the continental shelf was subaerially exposed to the cold Arctic air causing the formation of ice in the ground. This period was followed by a sea level rise that flooded the continental shelf with warmer waters, resulting in an intensive change of the thermal regime. The relict permafrost still reacts to this thermal change and is continuously thawing. Associated with the presence of relict permafrost, extensive gas hydrates exist to >1,000 m below the seafloor. Climate warming threatens both the stability of permafrost and associated gas hydrates. Their thawing and decomposition can cause a release of greenhouse gases which in turn amplifies climate warming. This study uses marine seismic reflection data to identify permafrost and gas hydrate in the southern Canadian Beaufort Sea. We find indicators of the top and base of permafrost and the base of the gas hydrate stability zone in the outer continental shelf area. Our work shows that the permafrost and gas hydrates still extend to the outer continental shelf and thereby supports previously published numerical models. The Pechora Sea is optimally located for studying the coalescence of a glacial and periglacial continental shelf zone in the high Arctic. Here, we present data acquired during cruises of the RV Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov in 2018–2021, revealing the distribution of submarine glacial landforms in the central part of the Pechora shelf area. Based on moraines and the distribution of glacial lineations, the extent of the ice sheet during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is proposed. The crests of the moraine ridges and the slopes of their sides express a variation in morphology, and the ridges combine into irregular complexes. The moraines are primarily composed of coarse cobble-sized material with an addition of coarse sand and other sedimentary fractions. The mapped glacial landforms clearly indicate that an ice sheet extended over the area, while the Pechora basin, at the same time, was comprised of lowland characterized by a cryogenic subaerial landscape. Based on the result from this study, the extent and ice-flow pattern of the Barents-Kara Ice Sheet during the LGM were determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pronounced changes in the deep Atlantic circulation occurred during glacial stages, which affected the global carbon distribution and the biogeochemical cycles of other elements. Previous studies demonstrated that oceanic mercury is sensitive to the same kind of processes that affect the carbon cycle in glacial-interglacial time scales. We used Hg isotopes to elucidate Hg cycling during the last two glacial-interglacial transitions in the subtropical western South Atlantic. Mass-dependent fractionation (MDF, δ202Hg) and mass-independent fractionation (MIF, Δ199Hg) show significant variations and shift toward higher and lower values during the penultimate and Last Glacial Maximum periods, respectively. δ202Hg variability is in-phase with periods of lower atmospheric CO2 and benthic δ13C, suggesting that MDF is affected by the same mechanisms that led to atmospheric CO2 drawdown during glacial stages. In contrast, terrestrial Hg input to our site, boosted by lower sea level and exposure of the continental shelf, dominates the Δ199Hg variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antarctic fjords and coastal bays are excellent traps for sediment and represent key areas for high-resolution investigation of past environmental conditions. Robertson Bay is an understudied coastal area located at the confluence of the Ross Sea and the Southern Ocean. Recently obtained seafloor morphology data indicate the presence of a cross-shelf elongated valley, composed of three minor basins separated by sills and seabed ridges with an arcuate shape. Several cores were collected within the basins, and investigated using a multiproxy approach including sedimentological, chemical, geochemical, and micropaleontological characterization to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental evolution from the last glacial period to present. The ages of two of these cores are constrained using ramped pyrolysis oxidation radiocarbon dating. Four sedimentary facies were recognised from which we developed a sedimentary model covering the last 21,000 years (21 ka BP). Our record provide evidence for a covering ice shelf cover from 21 to 16.5 ka BP, which gradually receded between 16,5 and 11 ka BP due to the progressive intrusion of modified Circumpolar Deep Water, thereby promoting the formation of Ice Shelf Water and High Salinity Shelf Water. From 11 to 5,8 ka BP, the ice shelf continued shrinking and nutrient-rich of modified Circumpolar Deep Water penetration onto the continental shelf progressively favoured diatom blooms and a general increase in primary productivity until 5.8 ka BP. The Late Holocene is characterised by an alternation of prolonged sea ice cover with stratified water column and strong bottom current with prolonged sea-ice free season with the intrusion of modified Circumpolar Deep Water and very slow energy bottom current. • First paleoenvironmental study from the LGM to the present in Robertson Bay. • Strong impact of regional ice sheet recession on environmental conditions and productivity. • Multiproxy approach constrained by Ramped Pyrolysis based age model. • The coastal bay area was studied by sediment cores and geophysical data. Here we present the first compilation of sediment volumes, sedimentation rates, and chronology of Quaternary sediment packages along the entire marine margin of the Eurasian ice sheets (EurIS; British-Irish, Kara-Barents Sea-Svalbard, and Fennoscandian). This compilation allows for a subdivision of the EurIS development into three phases (2.6-1.5 Ma, 1.5-0.78 Ma, and 0.78-0 Ma). At the start of the Quaternary, sedimentation rates increased, relative to pre-Quaternary rates, by an order of magnitude. This abruptness in rate change excludes tectonic raising of landmasses as the main factor, but more likely reflects climate change through increased glacial erosion. The sediment distribution data suggest that the Kara-Barents Sea-Svalbard Ice Sheet (KBSIS) already was quite large at the beginning of the Quaternary, and well before 1.5 Ma it extended to the shelf edge and coalesced with the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (FIS), which prior to 1.5 Ma most likely was located near the coast. Large ice streams and intense glacial erosion characterized the KBSIS in the 1.5-0.78 Ma time period, whereas the FIS at that time extended farther out on the continental shelf. After 0.78 Ma, a north-south change in EurIS development occurred. In the FIS and the British-Irish Ice Sheet (BIIS), large ice streams developed and shelf-edge glaciations occurred nearly 1 m.y. later compared to the KBSIS. The FIS and BIIS also repetitively coalesced in the North Sea. A significant drop in sediment input along the KBSIS marine margin, to the lowest Quaternary level, suggests a less erosive KBSIS. We tested the hypothesis that segregation in wintering areas is associated with population differentiation in a sentinel North Pacific seabird, the rhinoceros auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata). We collected tissue samples for genetic analyses on five breeding colonies in the western Pacific Ocean (Japan) and on 13 colonies in the eastern Pacific Ocean (California to Alaska), and deployed light-level geolocator tags on 12 eastern Pacific colonies to delineate wintering areas. Geolocator tags were deployed previously on one colony in Japan. There was strong genetic differentiation between populations in the eastern vs. western Pacific Ocean, likely due to two factors. First, glaciation over the North Pacific in the late Pleistocene might have forced a southward range shift that historically isolated the eastern and western populations. And second, deep-ocean habitat along the northern continental shelf appears to act as a barrier to movement; abundant on both sides of the North Pacific, the rhinoceros auklet is virtually absent as a breeder in the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea, and no tagged birds crossed the North Pacific in the non-breeding season. While genetic differentiation was strongest between the eastern vs. western Pacific, there was also extensive differentiation within both regional groups. In pairwise comparisons among the eastern Pacific colonies, the standardized measure of genetic differentiation (FꞌST) was negatively correlated with the extent of spatial overlap in wintering areas. That result supports the hypothesis that segregation in the non-breeding season is linked to genetic structure. Philopatry and a neritic foraging habit probably also contribute to the structuring. Widely distributed, vulnerable to anthropogenic stressors, and exhibiting extensive genetic structure, the rhinoceros auklet is fully indicative of the scope of the conservation challenges posed by seabirds. Mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b and d-loop sequences (2,137 bp) in 65 specimens of Sarcocheilichthys sinensis from five populations were identified as two lineages (I and II). The pairwise genetic distance between lineages I and II was 1.94%. SAMOVA analyses suggested that the best grouping occurred at three groups, Yangtze, Qiantang and Minjiang Rivers. High haplotype diversity (0.949) and low nucleotide diversity (θπ = 1.067%) were detected. The results of the neutrality tests, mismatch distribution and approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) did not support demographic expansions. The results of phylogenetic analysis, statistical dispersal-vicariance analysis (S-DIVA), ABC, MIGRATE-N and the time to the most recent common ancestor (TMRCA) indicated two colonization routes. First, before the Wuyi Mountains lifted, S. sinensis dispersed from the Yangtze River to the Minjiang River. The mechanisms controlling changes in atmospheric circulation and rainfall over the Indo‐Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) on glacial‐interglacial timescales remain a subject of considerable debate. Continental shelf exposure, through sea‐level drawdown during glacial periods, has been proposed as an important and possibly dominant control on rainfall intensity over the IPWP and Indian Ocean. However, longer records of hydroclimate change undermine this shelf exposure hypothesis. In particular, trends in some proxy records of rainfall do not track the extent of continental shelf exposure inferred from global benthic oxygen isotope records during Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3). We revisit the hypothesis that continental shelf exposure controls IPWP precipitation using the latest constraints on ice‐age sea level. Recent studies on the timing and magnitude of global mean sea level during mid‐MIS 3 (~45) suggest significantly higher peak sea level relative to previous work. Our gravitationally self‐consistent glacial isostatic adjustment sea‐level reconstructions, which adopt recent constraints on MIS 3 sea level, predict a transition from widely inundated to exposed shelves in the Indo‐Pacific region from mid‐MIS 3 to the beginning of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ~19–26 ka). Over this same time period, proxy records of vegetation and hydrology from central Indonesia suggest a transition from wetter conditions during mid‐MIS 3 to drier conditions during the LGM. Our new calculations thus negate prior criticisms related to the timing and extent of shelf exposure, indicating that shelf exposure may remain an important driver for hydroclimate variability in the IPWP region on glacial‐interglacial timescales. We describe a revised understanding of the extent and dynamics of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet on the continental shelf of northern British Columbia, Canada. During the Local Last Glacial Maximum ice streams occupied two of the three shelf‐crossing troughs in Queen Charlotte Sound (Goose Island Trough and Mitchell's Trough). A 25‐km‐wide outlet glacier – the Hecate Glacier – flowed south in Hecate Strait, parallel to the modern coast. It reached a grounding line at the head of Moresby Trough, beyond which an ice shelf may have extended to the edge of the continental shelf. The southern part of the independent Haida Gwaii Ice Cap formed piedmont lobes dissected by tunnel valleys. An emergent area east of the ice cap corresponds with the 'Hecate Refugium'. Subsequently grounded ice retreated from the shelf troughs. The Hecate Glacier retreated incrementally towards the north. Mainland ice then stabilized along a north–south margin near modern coasts, marked by submarine moraines in the Chatham Sound region and elsewhere. This margin was probably contemporaneous with the margin at Mt. Buxton in the south of the study area, dated at c. 17.6 to 16.6 ka (Darvill et al. 2018). Off southern Haida Gwaii, following a retreat, a glacier margin was established east of Juan Perez Sound, proximal to a sandur plain graded to a water level of −150 m. Proglacial lakes to the north of here were the likely source for an outburst flood that created gravel bedforms and an area of sea‐floor scour. In a final phase, diminished mainland ice was confined to fjords, and retreat inland is marked by a succession of submarine moraines, beginning with a moraine at the Douglas Channel sill. In this study a 165–265 m-thick siliciclastic-carbonate (mixed) base-of-slope succession within the Ediacaran Isaac Formation (hereafter termed FIC) in the deep-marine Windermere Supergroup (WSG), southern Canadian Cordillera was analyzed. Excellent outcrop exposure at three study areas (Castle Creek, Hill Section and Milk River), spaced over a distance of 20 km parallel to depositional dip provided the opportunity to observe the stratigraphic and inorganic carbon (δ13C carb) isotopic evolution of an ancient mixed, passive margin deep-water system. Based on detailed sedimentological analysis six stratal elements make-up the FIC (channel complexes, levees, siliciclastic-to-carbonate tripartite deposits, scour dominated units, debrites and slides). Within these strata the most voluminous carbonate phase (C1) represents neomorphism of primary aragonite on the slope and during early burial, and thus preserves the primary shallow-marine isotopic signature even after downslope transport. At the base of the FIC δ13C carb is negative (−5.2‰) and then progressively increases to 2–3‰ in the middle of the succession, after which it plateaus for about 65 m before declining to a nadir of −6.3‰ at its top. Coincident with these isotopic changes are systematic changes in the architecture and mineralogical composition of the component stratal elements that makeup the FIC, which collectively suggest long-term transgressive followed by regressive conditions that quite possibly are tied to rising and then falling sea-level, and accordingly the state of the continental shelf carbonate factory. Additionally, the upward change in δ13C carb closely resembles the trend reported in the upper June beds-Gametrail Formation of the WSG in the northern Canadian Cordillera, but the interpreted association of the latter with the Shuram-Wonoka anomaly (570–551 Ma) makes its correlation with the FIC unlikely. Instead, the FIC excursion potentially correlates with the EN2 excursion in the Doushantuo Formation of South China (and its potential global correlatives), which has been interpreted to be associated with the Gaskiers glaciation (580 Ma). This suggests that the FIC might be a stratigraphic and δ13C carb record of conditions that prevailed in the deep sea preceding the Gaskiers, which previously has been unreported from strata of the WSG. Temperature reconstructions from Greenland ice-sheet (GrIS) ice cores indicate the occurrence of more than 20 abrupt warmings during the last glacial period (LGP) known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events. Although their ultimate cause is still debated, evidence from both proxy data and modelling studies robustly links these to reorganisations of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). During the LGP, the GrIS expanded as far as the continental shelf break and was thus more directly exposed to oceanic changes than in the present. Therefore oceanic temperature fluctuations on millennial timescales could have had a non-negligible impact on the GrIS. Here we assess the effect of millennial-scale oceanic variability on the GrIS evolution from the last interglacial to the present day. To do so, we use a three-dimensional hybrid ice-sheet–shelf model forced by subsurface oceanic temperature fluctuations, assumed to increase during D-O stadials and decrease during D-O interstadials. Since in our model the atmospheric forcing follows orbital variations only, the increase in total melting at millennial timescales is a direct result of an increase in basal melting. We show that the GrIS evolution during the LGP could have been strongly influenced by oceanic changes on millennial timescales, leading to oceanically induced ice-volume contributions above 1 m sea level equivalent (SLE). Also, our results suggest that the increased flux of GrIS icebergs as inferred from North Atlantic proxy records could have been triggered, or intensified, by peaks in melting at the base of the ice shelves resulting from increasing subsurface oceanic temperatures during D-O stadials. Several regions across the GrIS could thus have been responsible for ice mass discharge during D-O events, opening the possibility of a non-negligible role of the GrIS in oceanic reorganisations throughout the LGP. The continental shelf of central-east Greenland is shaped by several glacially carved transverse troughs that form the oceanward extension of the major fjord systems. The evolution of these troughs through time, and their relation with the large-scale glaciation of the Northern Hemisphere, is poorly understood. In this study seismostratigraphic analyses have been carried out to determine the morphological and structural development of this important sector of the East Greenland glaciated margin. The age of major stratigraphic discontinuities has been constrained by a direct tie to ODP site 987 drilled in the Greenland Sea basin plain off Scoresby Sund fan system. The areal distribution and internal facies of the identified seismic units reveal the large-scale depositional pattern formed by ice-streams draining a major part of the central-east Greenland ice sheet. Initial sedimentation along the margin was, however, mainly controlled by tectonic processes related to the margin construction, continental uplift, and fluvial processes. From late Miocene to present, progradational and erosional patterns point to repeated glacial advances across the shelf. The evolution of depo-centres suggests that ice sheet advances over the continental shelf have occurred since late Miocene, about 2 Myr earlier than previously assumed. This cross-shelf glaciation is more pronounced during late Miocene and early Pliocene along Blosseville Kyst and around the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary off Scoresby Sund; indicating a northward migration of the glacial advance. The two main periods of glaciation were separated by a major retreat of the ice sheet to an inland position during middle Pliocene. Mounded-wavy deposits interpreted as current-related deposits suggest the presence of changing along-slope current dynamics in concert with the development of the modern North Atlantic oceanographic pattern. Ice streams in the Pine Island-Thwaites region of West Antarctica currently dominate contributions to sea level rise from the Antarctic ice sheet. Predictions of future ice-mass loss from this area rely on physical models that are validated with geological constraints on past extent, thickness and timing of ice cover. However, terrestrial records of ice sheet history from the region remain sparse, resulting in significant model uncertainties. We report glacial-geological evidence for the duration and timing of the last glaciation of Hunt Bluff, in the central Amundsen Sea Embayment. A multi-nuclide approach was used, measuring cosmogenic 10 Be and in situ 14 C in bedrock surfaces and a perched erratic cobble. Bedrock 10 Be ages (118–144 ka) reflect multiple periods of exposure and ice-cover, not continuous exposure since the last interglacial as had previously been hypothesized. In situ 14 C dating suggests that the last glaciation of Hunt Bluff did not start until 21.1 ± 5.8 ka – probably during the Last Glacial Maximum – and finished by 9.6 ± 0.9 ka, at the same time as ice sheet retreat from the continental shelf was complete. Thickening of ice at Hunt Bluff most likely post-dated the maximum extent of grounded ice on the outer continental shelf. Flow re-organisation provides a possible explanation for this, with the date for onset of ice-cover at Hunt Bluff providing a minimum age for the timing of convergence of the Dotson and Getz tributaries to form a single palaeo-ice stream. Knowledge of the sedimentary provenance and age of loess deposits can help reconstruct windblown dust activity in the source regions. However, we lack firm evidence to unravel the loess provenance on the offshore islands of China. In this study, we used geochemistry, micropaleontology, and optically stimulated luminescence dating to constrain the sedimentary provenance and age of the Shengshan Island loess on the continental shelf of the East China Sea (ECS). The sedimentary age of the Shengshan Island loess ranges from 75.9 ± 7.5 ka to 39.6 ± 3.4 ka, corresponding to low sea-level stands during the Last Glaciation. The zircon U Pb age spectrum of the Shengshan Island loess reveals a 96 Ma age peak, attributed to a source from the nearby granites, while the remaining age components are contributed by the Yangtze River sediments. The element characteristics of size-fractioned samples indicate that the Shengshan Island loess originates from the Yangtze River sediments, the surrounding granites, and dust from the Asian interior. The presence of the spores of the freshwater alga Concentricystes supports the conclusion that the Yangtze River sediments are the major source of the Shengshan Island loess. Thus, the Shengshan Island loess is dominantly derived from proximal dust activity with a minor proportion of the fine fraction derived long-distance dust transport. The local dust emissions from the Yangtze River sediments are directly driven by low sea levels and an arid environment on the continental shelf of the ECS during the Last Glaciation. Precise knowledge about the extent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; c. 26.5–19 cal. ka BP) is important in order to 1) improve paleo-ice sheet reconstructions, 2) provide a robust empirical framework for calibrating paleo-ice sheet models, and 3) locate potential shelf refugia for Antarctic benthos during the last glacial period. However, reliable reconstructions are still lacking for many WAIS sectors, particularly for key areas on the outer continental shelf, where the LGM-ice sheet is assumed to have terminated. In many areas of the outer continental shelf around Antarctica, direct geological data for the presence or absence of grounded ice during the LGM is lacking because of post-LGM iceberg scouring. This also applies to most of the outer continental shelf in the Amundsen Sea. Here we present detailed marine geophysical and new geological data documenting a sequence of glaciomarine sediments up to ~12 m thick within the deep outer portion of Abbot Trough, a palaeo-ice stream trough on the outer shelf of the Amundsen Sea Embayment. The upper 2–3 meters of this sediment drape contain calcareous foraminifera of Holocene and (pre-)LGM age and, in combination with palaeomagnetic age constraints, indicate that continuous glaciomarine deposition persisted here since well before the LGM, possibly even since the last interglacial period. Our data therefore indicate that the LGM grounding line, whose exact location was previously uncertain, did not reach the shelf edge everywhere in the Amundsen Sea. The LGM grounding line position coincides with the crest of a distinct grounding-zone wedge ~100 km inland from the continental shelf edge. Thus, an area of ≥6000 km2 remained free of grounded ice through the last glacial cycle, requiring the LGM grounding line position to be re-located in this sector, and suggesting a new site at which Antarctic shelf benthos may have survived the last glacial period. About 16% of the Greenland Ice Sheet drains in the area of the Northeast Greenland shelf between 76°N and 80.5°N via marine terminating glaciers. Most of it is via the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream, the largest ice stream of Greenland. During ice ages, the ice sheet extended onto the continental shelf and modern-day cross-shelf troughs were filled by ice streams. In this study, high-resolution hydro-acoustic data acquired during three decades of research were jointly investigated to reveal the past glacial conditions. Our data shows that Westwind Trough and Norske Trough were filled by fast flowing ice streams that extended to the shelf edge during the last glacial maximum. In between the cross-shelf troughs, ice domes resided on shallow banks that may have contributed about a decimetre to global sea level. Most probably these ice domes initiated fast ice flow through sinks in the inter-trough area. In Westwind Trough, ice sheet retreat to the inner shelf after the last glacial maximum was intermittent. In contrast, in Norske Trough the ice sheet retreat appears relatively rapid with no evidences for phases of grounding line stabilization. Probably during the Younger Dryas, the ice sheet readvanced to a mid-shelf position in both troughs documented by grounding zone wedges. During this time, a thick ice shelf was present in Norske Trough releasing tabular icebergs. Ice sheet retreat from the mid-shelf to the coastline during Holocene deglaciation was rapid. Aim High-latitude biodiversity distributions can preserve signals of the timing and geography of past glaciations, and as such ground truth ice-sheet models. Discrete polar archipelagos offer the fewest confounding factors for testing historic ice position records in extant biodiversity. At South Georgia, two competing geological hypotheses suggest that either the Last Glacial Maximum ( LGM) ice was extensive, nearly covering the continental shelf (H1 Big ice) or restricted to the inner fjords (H2 Little ice). We examined the past configuration of the South Georgia ice cap using seabed biodiversity. Location South Georgia, Southern Ocean. Methods We used a bespoke camera lander ( SUCS) and Agassiz trawl deployments across 'big ice' and 'little ice' hypothesized positions of LGM grounded ice around the South Georgia continental shelf. We investigated faunal assemblage structure and richness, especially of brooders, and modelled low dispersal taxa, for example, those with limited pelagic larvae (bryozoans and sponges). Results We found a striking 'line' of major richness discontinuity, with significantly higher richness, especially of brooders and low dispersal model taxa, mainly conforming to the 'big ice' hypothesized position. What few bryozoans and sponges occurred inside this line were a subset of those outside. Main conclusions Benthic biodiversity is consistent with extensive LGM grounded ice advancing to near the shelf break in most, but not all locations around South Georgia's shelf, for example, the eastern shelf area. We suggest that most of the shelf is still undergoing recolonization from when grounded ice covered the shelf ~20 kyr ago. Our alternative hypothesis of LGM ice position, H3 'Limited-Extensive ice', best fitted our data and is easily further testable, but if verified, shows that shelf recolonization following glaciation is much slower than previously thought. This contrasts with surprisingly rapid colonization of continental shelves after ice-shelf collapses, but these are not grounded, which may be crucial to polar recolonization rates. The study area is situated on the eastern slope of the Middle Urals, at an elevation of 250–300 m above sea level, in pine forests of the southern taiga subzone. The modern climate is temperate continental. In order to assess the Holocene environmental dynamics, a study of peat bog deposits by means of palynological and paleobotanical analyses, coupled with radiocarbon dating is undertaken. The article presents the results of a multi-proxy study of five sections of Shigirskiy and Gorbunovskiy peat bogs, the former post-glacial lakes changed into peat bogs during the Holocene. The study is coupled with archaeological investigations of the cultural layers in peat and sapropel, which represent the traces of settlements on the banks and islands. A total of 179 samples are subjected to palynological and botanical analyses and the radiocarbon dates are obtained on 29 samples of peat and sapropel. The peat bog stratigraphy, sedimentation processes, environmental dynamics and ancient human activities are characterized for the period from the end of Late Glacial throughout the Holocene. The three periods of the most significant climatic changes are established for the study area. 1) The warming and beginning of the spread of arboreal vegetation at the boundary between the Late Glacial and Eraly Holocene about 11 thousands calendar years ago, or 11 ka; 2) the substantial warming between 9.3 and 8.6 ka resulted in the wide spread of pine and formation of mixed forests with broad-leaved trees; 3) an abrupt decrease of spruce and broad-leaved arboreal plants in forest communities, indicating a dry cooling at about 4.2–3.8 ka. Those periods are related to the changes of archaeological epochs. The other three periods of climate aridification are established by the decreasing spruce frequencies in the pollen spectra and the transition from sapropel to peat due to lowering water levels in the lakes at about 8.3–7.8, 6.2–5.8, and 5.4 ka. The formation of cultural layers was related to the dry periods and the reduced levels of ground waters, which promoted the human use of the peatlands. The results are presented as a table summarizing the environmental dynamics over the background of the calendar age of deposits and are correlated to the Blytt-Sernander periodization of the Holocene in Northern Eurasia modified by Khotinsky (1977) and the formal tripartite subdivision of the Holocene (Walker et al., 2012). The southern Red Sea is affected by intense interactions between monsoon and sea level changes in a semi-closed environment. Still, the impacts on the wide shelves remain poorly documented. We investigate the seafloor environmental conditions on the southern Red Sea shelf over the last 30 ka through sedimentological (visual inspection, granulometry, bulk density), geochemical (organic carbon, calcium carbonate and nitrogen content) and micropaleontological (benthic foraminifera) observations in a previously dated sediment core (FA09) from the Farasan Islands Archipelago. Glacial sediments exhibit high density and low carbonate contents, whereas post-glacial sediments reflect increased biogenic productivity. Seafloor oxygenation was limited in most of the glacial interval, along with hypersaline conditions. During the maximum sea level lowstand, an enhanced presence of eutrophic-indicator benthic assemblages likely reflects efficient organic matter preservation induced by weak water ventilation. Our proxies combined with a previous surface-water productivity reconstruction reveals a coupling between organic matter flux to the seafloor and surface productivity levels in the southern Red Sea shelf, particularly pronounced during periods of enhanced summer monsoon. This pattern is often accompanied by a decrease in seafloor oxygenation. In contrast, well oxygenated and more oligotrophic seafloor conditions are recorded around the time of Heinrich Stadial 2, when previous work indicates a reduction in summer monsoon intensity and surface productivity levels. A drastic decrease of benthic foraminifera along with increased organic carbon contents in late glacial and late Holocene reflect oxygen-depleted seafloor conditions that we attribute to expansion of an intensified southern Red Sea oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). • Biogenic productivity increase and sediment density drop mark the Holocene transition. • Organic matter inputs on the seafloor correlate well with surface productivity. • Low oxygen and high salinity seafloor conditions prevailed during the glacial period. • Well-oxygenated and oligotrophic seafloor conditions occurred at HS2. • Intensified OMZ led to benthic faunal minimization at late glacial and late Holocene. We investigated whether shelf-depth changes would have influenced Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) response to climate forcing using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM). The simulations confirm that this would have indeed been the case. For the last-glacial-cycle (LGC) type forcing we prescribed, a modern-like polar AIS surrounded by shallow and intermediate bathymetries experiences rapid grounding-line advance early during the transition from interglacial to glacial forcing. This is in contrast to our baseline simulation of AIS response on the currently overdeepened bathymetry, which showed the expected gradual advance of grounding lines to the same climatic forcing. In the simulation, the more-positive mass balance for the shallower bathymetry is primarily a result of significantly lower calving fluxes from smaller-area ice shelves. On the basis of these results, we suggest that shelf bathymetry is an important boundary condition that should be considered when reconstructing AIS behavior since at least the middle Miocene. We note that caution should be used when applying these concepts because the particular way in which AIS mass balance is altered by shelf depth depends on how the changes in accumulation and ablation at the marine terminations combine with accumulation and ablation on land. The Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) advanced onto the continental shelf during the last glacial period. While deglacial records for when the GrIS withdrew onto the modern coastline are relatively abundant, the timing of early GrIS retreat on the shelf is poorly constrained. Here we use planktic foraminiferal δ 18 O, sediment grain size, sedimentation rates, and 14 C ages in southeastern Davis Strait core HU87033-008 to develop an early deglaciation chronology of the southwestern GrIS while on the continental shelf. Sedimentation rates, and especially silt and clay fractions, are high between ∼20.5 and ∼17.1 ka, suggesting that the southwestern GrIS margin was near or at the shelf break, where it released subglacially derived sediment-laden meltwater. A peak in sedimentation rates of ∼110 cm ka −1 between ∼19.3 ka and ∼18.6 ka, combined with an initial decrease in planktic δ 18 O of ∼0.5 per mil, suggests an early deglacial pull back of the GrIS margin from the shelf break with a concurrent increase in surface ocean meltwater discharge. A subsequent planktic δ 18 O decrease of ∼1.0 per mil combined with a drop in silt and clay sedimentation rates at 18–17 ka likely record further GrIS retreat inland from the shelf break. Terrestrial 10 Be surface exposure ages indicate that the GrIS margin remained on the continental shelf until ∼11 ka, yet the cause of this subsequent ice-margin stability on the inner shelf is not known. Our new records provide the first evidence that the southwestern GrIS margin may have begun to deglaciate at the same time as other Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. As Labrador Sea water temperatures likely remained near glacial values until ∼15 ka, we suggest that initial southwestern GrIS retreat was in response to rising global sea level from retreat of other ice sheets and/or the initial deglacial rise in boreal summer insolation. Reconstructing the advance and retreat of past ice sheets provides important long-term context for recent change(s) and enables us to better understand ice sheet responses to forcing mechanisms and external boundary conditions that regulate grounding line retreat. This study applies various radiocarbon dating techniques, guided by a detailed sedimentological analyses, to reconstruct the glacial history of Anvers-Hugo Trough (AHT), one of the largest bathymetric troughs on the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) shelf. Existing records from AHT indicate that the expanded Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet (APIS) advanced to, or close to, the continental shelf edge during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 23-19 cal kyr BP [ = calibrated kiloyears before present]), with deglaciation of the outer shelf after ∼16.3 cal kyr BP. Our new chronological data show that the APIS had retreated to the middle shelf by ∼15.7 cal kyr BP. Over this 600-year interval, two large grounding-zone wedges (GZW) were deposited across the middle (GZW2) and inner shelf (GZW3), suggesting that their formation occurred on centennial rather than millennial timescales. Expanded sequences of sub-ice shelf sediments occur seaward of the inner GZW3, which suggests that the grounding line remained stationary for a prolonged period over the middle shelf. Grounding-line retreat rates indicate faster retreat across the outer to middle shelf compared to retreat across the middle to inner shelf. We suggest that variable retreat rates relate to the broad-scale morphology of the trough, which is characterised by a relatively smooth, retrograde seabed on the outer to middle shelf and rugged morphology with a locally landward shallowing bed and deep basin on the inner shelf. A slowdown in retreat rate could also have been promoted by convergent ice flow over the inner shelf and the availability of pinning points associated with bathymetric highs around Anvers Island and Hugo Island. • The deglacial history of Anvers-Hugo Trough is revealed by marine geological and geophysical data. • Application of multiple 14C dating methods allows reliable dating of ice sheet retreat. • Grounded ice had retreated to the mid-shelf by ∼15.7 cal kyr BP. • Retreat rates are controlled by the broad-scale morphology of the shelf. Until recently, the British- Irish Ice Sheet ( BIIS) was thought to have reached no farther than a mid-continental shelf position in the Hebrides Sector, NW Britain, during the last glaciation (traditional model). However, recent discovery of widespread shelf-edge moraines in this sector has led to a suggestion of much more extensive ice ( Atlantic Shelf model). The position of the St Kilda archipelago, approximately mid-way between the Outer Hebrides and the continental shelf edge, makes it ideal as an onshore location to test which of the two competing models is more viable. To this end, we (i) reassessed the characteristics, stratigraphy and morphology of the Quaternary sediments exposed on the largest island ( Hirta), and (ii) applied time-dependent 2 D numerical modelling of possible glacier formation on Hirta. Instead of three glaciations (as previously suggested), we identified evidence of only two, including one of entirely local derivation. The numerical model supports the view that this glaciation was in the form of two short glaciers occupying the two valleys that dominate Hirta. The good state of preservation of the glacial sediments and associated moraine of this local glaciation indicate relatively recent formation. In view of the low inferred equilibrium line altitude of the glacier associated with the best morphological evidence (∼120 m), considerable thickness of slope deposits outside the glacial limits and evidence of only one rather than two tills, a Late Devensian rather than Younger Dryas age is preferred for this glaciation. Re-examination of the submarine moraine pattern from available bathymetry suggests that the ice sheet was forced to flow around St Kilda, implying that the ice was of insufficient thickness to overrun the islands. Accepting this leaves open the possibility that a St Kilda nunatak supported local ice while the ice sheet extended to the continental shelf edge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic susceptibility (MS) is routinely used as a proxy for terrigenous material input to Antarctic continental margin sediments. Variations in terrigenous input on glacial-interglacial timescales in this setting are related to a range of environmental changes; including to the cryosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. However, the exact environmental factors and depositional processes that control MS values in sedimentary cores from the Antarctic continental margin remains unresolved. Here, we explore in detail sedimentary physical characteristics and MS values of core BS17-GC01 collected from Bellingshausen Sea continental rise, to understand how depositional process have varied during the late Quaternary. We found that input of terrigenous material increased markedly during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 2 and 4, compared to deposition during the adjacent interstadial and Holocene times. Variation in the bulk MS values were associated with changes in grain size. Size specific mass-normalized MS measurements show the fine fraction (<16 μm) has the highest MS values, followed by the coarse silt fraction (16–63 μm). However, because coarse silt is the predominant grain size, the increased bulk MS during MIS 2 and 4 are mainly driven by changes in this fraction. We propose that the coarse silt with high bulk MS values observed in glacial sediments were transported to the site as iceberg rafted debris, originating from the Bellingshausen Sea shelf region. In contrast, grains >1 mm – a commonly applied proxy for glacial transport in this setting – were observed during MIS 1 and 3 only. We conclude these contrasting signatures of iceberg rafted debris in this Bellingshausen Sea core arise from changes in the to the erosive dynamics of the adjacent ice shelf and continental shelf on glacial/interglacial timescales. • The MS in the Bellingshausen Sea co-varied with Antarctic ice core dust record. • The correlations of MS and dust record can be used for obtaining chronological points. • The MS is controlled by source/transport mechanism changes resulting in grain size change. • MS increases during MIS 2 and 4 are ascribed to increased coarse silt having high MS. • The coarse silt fraction during glacial periods was transported by icebergs. The continental slope of the Canadian Beaufort Sea presents an exceptional opportunity to study the relationship between the fluid venting and the formation of mass-transport deposits. The continental shelf was emergent and partially ice-free during the last glaciation and is underlain by widespread permafrost. Water-column backscatter has shown the locations of more than 40 active gas vents along seaward margin of the subsea permafrost at the shelf break and upper slope. New multibeam bathymetry and subbottom profiler data show shallow potentially late Holocene failures and mass-transport deposits on the upper slope. Upslope from a prominent headscarp, undulating seabed with apparent growth faults overlies an acoustically incoherent to stratified horizon at 50 m sub-bottom interpreted as a decollement surface over which progressive creep has occurred. Similar creep is present in places on the upper slope and in places seems to have evolved into small translational slides, involving more compacted sediment buried > 25 m, or into muddy debris flows where sediments buried < 25 m have failed. Much of the slope failed during a regional retrogressive event, the Ikit slump, likely initiated on steep channel walls on the lower slope. Characteristic ridge and trough morphology resulting from retrogressive spreading or rotational slumping are preserved on gradients < 2° on the upper slope, but appear to have been completely evacuated on gradients of 3° on the mid slope, where muddy debris-flow deposits are found. Correlations between radiocarbon dated cores and sub-bottom profiles show that the retrogressive failure occurred in the last 1000 years. This study implies that Holocene shelf break and upper slope stability in the Beaufort Sea are strongly linked to the dynamics of the permafrost and the presence of weak, gas-rich sediments. Evidence of at least three Early to Middle Pleistocene glaciations is recorded in the stratigraphic exposures near the outer limit of glaciation in southern Patagonia. At Cabo Vírgenes, at the mouth of the Strait of Magellan, up to 70 m of till, gravel, sand, and stony silt were deposited in a grounding-line environment at the front of the Magellan lobe along a front several tens of kilometres wide. Accommodation space for the sediments was produced by glacio-isostatic depression resulting from the advance of the Magellan lobe to the Atlantic coast. At that time, the 'moat' in which the sediments accumulated may have been seaward of the modern Atlantic shoreline because the continental shelf is shallow and sea level was much lower than it is today. The sediments at Cabo Vírgenes are normally magnetized, carry no reversed overprints, and thus probably date to the Brunhes Chron (<0.774 Ma). Seacliff exposures south of the Strait of Magellan along the Atlantic coast of northern Tierra de Fuego expose two tills separated by glaciofluvial sediments. Although not dated, the tills record two advances of the Magellan lobe onto the Atlantic continental shelf. The location of the exposures relative to Cabo Vírgenes indicates that the upper of the two tills may correlate with the Cabo Vírgenes drift. The Tres de Enero highway cut, 90 km northwest of Cabo Vírgenes, exposes lodgement tills deposited during the Great Patagonian glaciation (GPG) – two stacked, normally magnetized tills overlie a reversely magnetized till. Truncated sand wedges separate each of the three tills, indicating that the tills record three separate Early to Middle Pleistocene glaciations. The younger of the two normally magnetized tills, and perhaps both, were deposited in the Brunhes Chron; the lowest, reversely magnetized till records extensive glaciation late during the Matuyama Chron (2.608–0.780 Ma). At Bella Vista in the Río Gallegos valley, a 0.89-Ma-old basalt flow caps a thick unit of normally magnetized glaciofluvial gravel, which was probably deposited during the Jaramillo Subchron (1.075–0.991 Ma), but certainly not later. Sediments at Tres de Enero and Bella Vista show that the GPG is not a single event as originally thought, but rather at least three glaciations, perhaps spanning several hundred thousand years. • Seacliffs expose two tills separated by outwash, indicative of two advances of the Magellan lobe onto the Atlantic shelf. • A road cut south of Rio Gallegos exposes Great Patagonian (GPG) tills. • The GPG is a multi-phased, rather than a single, glacial event, possibly spanning several hundred thousand years. Palaeoshorelines and associated palaeo-coastal features are studied to reconstruct past sea level, climate, and depositional environments. Their identification typically depends on direct field observations and is therefore challenging in the marine environment, where the interpretation mostly relies on sparse geophysical data. This review presents, based on 118 published case studies, a summary of morphological evidence that can be used to identify submerged relict coastal features worldwide, using only geophysical data. Four coastal feature categories that can be used as palaeoshoreline indicators were identified: (1) beach ridges of wind and wave origin; (2) shoreface strata; (3) marine terraces; and (4) coral-reef terraces. In light of this proposed classification, an area of ~200,000 km2 was investigated along the Rowley Shelf (North West Shelf, Australia), a carbonate-dominated platform, based on the integration of high-resolution bathymetry (i.e., seismic-derived bathymetry, satellite-derived bathymetry, multibeam echosounder bathymetry, spot depth soundings) and 2D reflection seismic lines. Relict features were discriminated from modern bedforms using five criteria: (1) stratigraphic position; (2) emersion features; (3) similarity with modern and published analogues; (4) integration of modern ocean conditions; and (5) evidence of early cementation. In total, over 500 submerged relict coastal features were identified, making this review the most comprehensive catalogue published to date. Relict features are concentrated over specific depths, referred to as modal sea-level depths (MSLDs), which correspond to depths where the relative sea level remained stable over long periods of time. Nine MSLDs are observed at 20, 35, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 105 and 125 m below sea level. Each MSLD is the result of the accumulation of coastal features through multiple glacial/ interglacial cycles. Most of the features may nevertheless be related to the last glacial sea-level fall and were likely formed between Marine Isotopes Stages (MIS) 5 and 2. The analysis of the submerged coastal features indicates that the overall shelf morphology is controlled by the distribution of these features, and that, while in a carbonate province, their formation is related to wind, tide, fluvial and wave processes. The higher concentration of relict fluvial-influenced features at shallower depths and of relict tide-influenced features at greater depths suggest that fluvial runoffs were limited during glacial periods. This, in turn, supports the hypothesis of a prevalent dry climate during glacial periods and in contrast, of a humid climate during interglacial periods. Finally, the study reveals that most modern coral reefs of the Rowley Shelf are growing on top of relict coastal features and that seabed ridges previously interpreted as drowned coral reefs are, in fact, likely to be relict coastal features formed through clastic processes. Results from this study will support the identification of submerged palaeoshorelines on continental shelves around the globe and highlight the influence of associated relict coastal features on shelf morphologies. The long-term behavior of the East and West Antarctic Ice Sheets, and their respective responses to forcing provide essential context for assessment of modern dynamic changes in ice-flow regimes and ice-sheet and shelf margins. The western Ross Sea discharges ice from both the East and West Antarctic Ice Sheets, and the paleoglacial record from this region is therefore valuable in unraveling their long-term behavior. New, high-resolution multibeam bathymetric data reveal snapshots of well-preserved glacial landforms on the seafloor around Ross Island and McMurdo Sound. Glacial lineations, grounding zone wedges, draped recessional moraines, and meltwater channels record a series of different ice-flow events in the region, contradictions between which require major phases of ice-flow reorganization. From the glacial geomorphology, we reconstruct a four-stage model of ice-flow evolution for the last glacial cycle, consisting of: (1) northeastward flow into the Ross Sea from McMurdo Sound; (2) westward flow from the Ross Sea, around Ross Island, and onto the Victoria Land coast and coastal seafloor trough; (3) a deglacial phase of ice-sheet thinning, minor shifts in flow, and grounding line retreat into McMurdo Sound; and (4) grounding line pinning on Ross Island during regional retreat, uncoupling of a remnant Ross Island ice cap, and local oscillation of Victoria Land outlet glaciers. We find that East Antarctic Ice Sheet ice discharge had a strong influence on ice-flow geometry in this part of the Ross Sea during the last glacial stage, but that it was not necessarily in phase with the behavior of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. It is similarly evident that the ice streams that drained the Ross Sea over the continental shelf at the Last Glacial Maximum did not all operate synchronously, and exerted different drawdown power at different times. Finally, we conclude that Ross Island acts as an important pinning point in the Ross Sea ice-sheet--shelf system, stabilizing grounding line retreat and encouraging lasting ice-shelf development. The narrow, oceanic current-swept shelf of the Durban Bluff is characterised by Pleistocene aeolianites deposited unconformably onto a Cretaceous sequence. Subsequent beachrocks were deposited on and erosional features cut into the aeolianites, tracking a series of palaeocoastlines that extend from the supratidal zone to the outer continental shelf and record sea level fluctuations from the Last Interglacial to the present. High-resolution boomer seismics reveal a detailed sequence stratigraphy for the late Cretaceous drift sequence (Early Santonian to Late Maastrichtian) followed by a likely Miocene/Pliocene sequence preserved on the shelf edge, the first record of these deposits from the Durban continental shelf. Seven seismic units are recognised (Units A to G), bounded by regional sequence boundaries, maximum flooding surfaces and wave ravinement surfaces. Mapping of the Bluff Ridge and adjoining Blood Reef by geophysical surveys and scuba diving enabled subdivision of the Quaternary deposits into three aeolianite units and 13 beachrock units. Calcareous nannoplankton preserved in the aeolianite units indicate a late Pleistocene to Holocene age (Zone NN21, maximally 290 ka) for the deposits and the presence of reworked Miocene forms provides further support for the existence of Neogene on the shelf edge. A new Infared Stimulated Luminescence age of 60 ka obtained from offshore aeolianite indicates dune-building during the Marine Isotope Stage 4 glacial period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Throughout the last 1.1 million years repeated glaciations have modified the southern Fennoscandian landscape and the neighbouring continental shelf into their present form. The glacigenic erosion products derived from the Fennoscandian landmasses were transported to the northern North Sea and the SE Nordic Seas continental margin. The prominent sub-marine Norwegian Channel trough, along the south coast of Norway, was the main transport route for the erosion products between 1.1 and 0.0 Ma. Most of these erosion products were deposited in the North Sea Fan, which reaches a maximum thickness of 1500 m and has nearly 40 000 km3 of sediments. About 90% of the North Sea Fan sediments have been deposited during the last 500 000 years, in a time period when fast-moving ice streams occupied the Norwegian Channel during each glacial stage. Back-stripping the sediment volumes in the northern North Sea and SE Nordic Seas sink areas, including the North Sea Fan, to their assumed Fennoscandian source area gives an average vertical erosion of 164 m for the 1.1-0.0 Ma time period. The average 1.1-0.0 Ma erosion rate in the Fennoscandian source area is estimated to be 0.15 mm a−1. We suggest, however, that large variations in erosion rates have existed through time and that the most intense Fennoscandian landscape denudation occurred during the time period of repeated shelf edge ice advances, namely from Marine Isotope Stage 12 ( c. 0.5 Ma) onwards. Abstract: We summarize 121 14C and in-situ cosmogenic (10Be and 36Cl) ages that constrain fluctuations of the Irish Ice Sheet (IIS) since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) that can be linked to abrupt climate changes in the North Atlantic region. These data provide a robust means to date ice-sheet fluctuations because similar-age events can be identified from widely spaced sites, they are constrained by stratigraphy, and they can be related to large changes in the configuration of a dynamic ice sheet. The following events are recognized. (1) AMS 14C ages and 10Be and 36Cl ages as well as offshore data suggest that the last maximum advance of the IIS occurred between ∼27 and 23 cal ka. (2) Deglaciation began on the western continental shelf and in the Irish Sea Basin at ∼23 cal ka. Dated sites from around Ireland constrain subsequent widespread retreat of ice-sheet margins from the shelf onto Irish coastlines during the Cooley Point Interstadial ≥20 cal ka. AMS 14C ages suggest that the Cooley Point Interstadial continued until ≤18.2 cal ka B.P. During this interstadial, retreat of the ice-sheet margin into the northern Irish Sea Basin indicates that the IIS may have lost up to two-thirds of its mass. (3) Dated sites from northwestern and eastern Ireland indicate that the Cooley Point Interstadial was terminated by ice readvance during the Clogher Head Stadial at ∼18.2 cal ka. (4) The Linns Interstadial was a brief interval (≥17.0–≥16.5 cal ka) of ice recession following the Clogher Head Stadial that is identified from raised marine sediments in eastern and northern Ireland and cosmogenic ages elsewhere in Ireland. (5) The IIS subsequently readvanced during the Killard Point Stadial, reaching its maximum extent ∼16.5 cal ka, indicating that the readvance began sometime earlier. (6) Widespread retreat of the IIS began by ∼15.5 cal ka during the Rough Island Interstadial. Abstract: The continental margin offshore of western Ireland offers an opportunity to study the effects of glacial forcing on the morphology and sediment architecture of a mid-latitude margin. High resolution multibeam bathymetry and backscatter data, combined with shallow seismic and TOBI deep-towed side-scan sonar profiles, provide the basis for this study and allow a detailed geomorphological interpretation of the northwest Irish continental margin. Several features, including submarine mass failures, canyon systems and escarpments, are identified in the Rockall Trough for the first time. A new physiographic classification of the Irish margin is proposed and linked to the impact of glaciations along the margin. Correlation of the position and dimensions of moraines on the continental shelf with the level of canyon evolution suggests that the sediment and meltwater delivered by the British–Irish Ice Sheet played a fundamental role in shaping the margin including the upslope development of some of the canyon systems. The glacial influence is also suggested by the variable extent and backscatter signal of sedimentary lobes associated with the canyons. These lobes provide an indirect measurement of the amount of glaciogenic sediment delivered by the ice sheet into the Rockall Trough during the last glacial maximum. None of the sedimentary lobes demonstrates notable relief, indicating that the amount of glaciogenic sediment delivered by the British–Irish Ice Sheet into the Rockall Trough was limited. Their southward disappearance suggests a more restricted BIIS, which did not reach the shelf edge south of 54°23′ N. The various slope styles observed on the Irish margin represent snapshots of the progressive stages of slope development for a glacially-influenced passive margin and may provide a predictive model for the evolution of other such margins. The southwestern Barents Sea has experienced profound erosion during the last ~2.7 m.y. that has resulted in the development of a characteristic glacial morphology of the continental shelf and deposition of a several-kilometer-thick sediment fan along the western margin prograding into the deep sea. In the period from ca. 2.7 to 1.5 Ma, proglacial processes, including fluvial and glaciofluvial erosion, dominated. For this period, the total average erosion of the shelf was 170-230 m, the average erosion rate was 0.15-0.2 mm/yr, and the average sedimentation rates on the fan were 16-22 cm/k.y. Subglacial erosion affected an area of ~575,000 km² during the period from ca. 1.5 to 0.7 Ma. Total average erosion is estimated at 330-420 m for this interval, and the average erosion rate was 0.4-0.5 mm/yr. Average sedimentation rates were 50-64 cm/k.y. During the last ~0.7 m.y., glacial erosion mainly has occurred beneath fast-flowing paleo-ice streams topographically confined to troughs (~200,000 km²). The total average erosion is estimated at 440-530 m, average erosion rate is 0.6--0.8 mm/yr, and average sedimentation rate on the continental slope is 18-22 cm/k.y. The amount of erosion was mainly determined by the duration of the glaciations and the location, velocity, and basal properties of the ice streams. In total, glacial erosion of the troughs has been relatively high throughout the last ~2.7 m.y. at ~1000-1100 m. For the banks, erosion is inferred to have increased from ca. 2.7 Ma to a peak between 1.5 and 0.7 Ma. Subsequently, little erosion occurred in these areas, which implies a total of 500-650 m of erosion. Compared with other high-latitude areas, our rates are among the highest so far reported. The Cenozoic glacial history of East Antarctica is recorded in part by the stratigraphy of the Prydz Bay-Lambert Graben region. The glacigene strata and associated erosion surfaces record at least 10 intervals of glacial advance (with accompanying erosion and sediment compaction), and more than 17 intervals of glacial retreat (enabling open marine deposition in Prydz Bay and the Lambert Graben). The number of glacial advances and retreats is considerably less than would be expected from Milankovitch frequencies due to the incomplete stratigraphic record. Large advances of the Lambert Glacier caused progradation of the continental shelf edge. At times of extreme glacial retreat, marine conditions reached >450 km inland from the modern ice shelf edge. This review presents a partial reconstruction of Cenozoic glacial extent within Prydz Bay and the Lambert Graben that can be compared to eustatic sea-level records from the southern Australian continental margin. Abstract: Throughout the Pleistocene the sedimentary environment on the SE Nordic Seas continental slope/outer shelf, off western Norway, has been strongly controlled by variability in the Norwegian Atlantic Current (NwAC), glaciations of the shelf areas and sea level changes. Acoustic and core data from the southern Vøring Plateau show a Pleistocene sequence characterised by hemipelagic sediments interfingered by diamictons on the upper slope. The area of the 7.25 14C ka BP Storegga Slide shows evidence of a long history of Pleistocene mega-slides. During the last interglacial, and most likely also during previous interglacials, the slide region has been the locus of rapid deposition between water depths of 800 and 1200 m, as a result of NwAC winnowing along the upper slope. The North Sea Fan region is strongly influenced by glacigenic debris flows (GDFs) deposited during glacial advances reaching the shelf edge, when the Norwegian Channel was occupied by the Norwegian Channel Ice Stream. It appears that GDF activity was initiated at ca. Marine Isotope Stage 12. Interbedded between the debris flow sequences, mega-slide events such as the Møre and Tampen slides have been identified. During glaciations, when the entire SE Nordic Seas continental shelf was covered by extensive grounded ice sheets, basal till were transported to the shelf edge from where subsequent mass movement occurred. During late glaciation/early deglaciation meltwater plumes were released at the time of disintegration of ice streams in the Norwegian Channel, as is evidenced from the last deglaciation of the margin at ca. 15 14C ka BP. The plume material was transported northwards by currents, before rapidly deposited as a thick package within the Storegga Slide area and on the south Vøring Plateau. Based on identification and dating of iceberg scourings, glacial erosion surfaces and delta deposits on the shelf, subsidence rates between 0.7 and 1.2 m/ky have been calculated for the last ca. 250 ka. A new fossil paracypridine ostracod, Tasmanocypris lochardi sp.nov. is described from late Miocene shallow marine strata of southeastern Australia. It has morphological features similar to a number of modern southern Australian and southwest African Tasmanocypris species, here termed the dartnalli -group. This species group was likely present in early Cenozoic temperate, shallow seas around Antarctica. The first appearance of Tasmanocypris lochardi in late Miocene marine strata of the Bass Strait hinterland of SE Australia, equates to a late Miocene (9–7 Ma) intensification and northward latitudinal shift of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Late Miocene occurrences of Tasmanocypris lochardi in southeast Australia were likely associated with temperate eastward flows of the ACC north of the Subantarctic Front. During the early Pliocene, the warm Zeehan Current (aka Leeuwin Current) replaced the ACC as the dominant easterly flowing current across Bass Strait, and this 4.4 Ma palaeoceanographical event correlates with the temporary, but widespread disappearance of T. lochardi from southeast Australian marine waters. However, the presence of refugia populations of T. lochardi along the east Australian continental shelf between 4.4 and 3.4 Ma, likely enabled the brief re-establishment of T. lochardi in the east of Bass Strait during the late Pliocene (3.2–3.0 Ma). We present PATICE, a GIS database of Patagonian glacial geomorphology and recalibrated chronological data. PATICE includes 58,823 landforms and 1,669 geochronological ages, and extends from 38°S to 55°S in southern South America. We use these data to generate new empirical reconstructions of the Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) and subsequent ice masses and ice-dammed palaeolakes at 35 ka, 30 ka, 25 ka, 20 ka, 15 ka, 13 ka (synchronous with the Antarctic Cold Reversal), 10 ka, 5 ka, 0.2 ka and 2011 AD. At 35 ka, the PIS covered of 492.6 x103 km2, had a sea level equivalent of ~1,496 mm, was 350 km wide and 2090 km long, and was grounded on the Pacific continental shelf edge. Outlet glacier lobes remained topographically confined and the largest generated the suites of subglacial streamlined bedforms characteristic of ice streams. The PIS reached its maximum extent by 33 – 28 ka from 38°S to 48°S, and earlier, around 47 ka from 48°S southwards. Net retreat from maximum positions began by 25 ka, with ice-marginal stabilisation then at 21 – 18 ka, which was then followed by rapid, irreversible deglaciation. By 15 ka, the PIS had separated into disparate ice masses, draining into large ice-dammed lakes along the eastern margin, which strongly influenced rates of recession. Glacial readvances or stabilisations occurred at least at 14 – 13 ka, 11 ka, 6 – 5 ka, 2 – 1 ka, and 0.5 – 0.2 ka. Background: Pallenopsis patagonica (Hoek, 1881) is a morphologically and genetically variable sea spider species whose taxonomic classification is challenging. Currently, it is considered as a species complex including several genetic lineages, many of which have not been formally described as species. Members of this species complex occur on the Patagonian and Antarctic continental shelves as well as around sub-Antarctic islands. These habitats have been strongly influenced by historical large-scale glaciations and previous studies suggested that communities were limited to very few refugia during glacial maxima. Therefore, allopatric speciation in these independent refugia is regarded as a common mechanism leading to high biodiversity of marine benthic taxa in the high-latitude Southern Hemisphere. However, other mechanisms such as ecological speciation have rarely been considered or tested. Therefore, we conducted an integrative morphological and genetic study on the P. patagonica species complex to i) resolve species diversity using a target hybrid enrichment approach to obtain multiple genomic markers, ii) find morphological characters and analyze morphometric measurements to distinguish species, and iii) investigate the speciation processes that led to multiple lineages within the species complex. Results: Phylogenomic results support most of the previously reported lineages within the P. patagonica species complex and morphological data show that several lineages are distinct species with diagnostic characters. Two lineages are proposed as new species, P. aulaeturcarum sp. nov. Dömel & Melzer, 2019 and P. obstaculumsuperavit sp. nov. Dömel, 2019, respectively. However, not all lineages could be distinguished morphologically and thus likely represent cryptic species that can only be identified with genetic tools. Further, morphometric data of 135 measurements showed a high amount of variability within and between species without clear support of adaptive divergence in sympatry. Conclusions: We generated an unprecedented molecular data set for members of the P. patagonica sea spider species complex with a target hybrid enrichment approach, which we combined with extensive morphological and morphometric analyses to investigate the taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography of this group. The extensive data set enabled us to delineate species boundaries, on the basis of which we formally described two new species. Its submarine base and exposure to warm shelf waters makes the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) highly vulnerable to climatic and oceanographic changes. Modelling infers that the WAIS has likely had a very dynamic history throughout the Neogene to the present. A complete collapse of the WAIS would result in a global sea level rise of 3.3 to 4.3 m, yet there is large uncertainty on predicting its future behavior and its role in sea level rise. Geological data on the past behavior of the WAIS are relatively sparsely and unequally distributed, in particular records of time intervals with climatic conditions similar to those expected for the near and distant future. Reconstructions and quantifications of partial or complete WAIS collapses in the past are therefore urgently needed for constraining and testing ice sheet models that aim to project future WAIS behavior.JOIDES Resolution departed from Punta Arenas in mid-January 2019 for IODP Expedition 379 to drill sites on the continental shelf and rise of the Amundsen Sea Embayment (ASE), where records are expected to represent dynamical advance and retreat processes of the central part of the WAIS. This embayment is of particular significance for studying WAIS dynamics as this sector currently experiences the largest ice mass loss in Antarctica, driven by ocean heat transport to the cavities of the main outlet glaciers. The plan was to drill a series of sites on the shelf where seismic data reveal seaward-dipping sedimentary sequences that span from the preglacial depositional phase to the most recent glacial periods. Deep-water sites on the continental rise were selected for recovering continuous records of glacially transported sediments and detailed archives of climatic and oceanographic changes throughout glacial–interglacial cycles.In this presentation, we will provide on-hand information of the recently completed drilling operation in a notoriously ice-infested environment as well as first preliminary drilling results with regard to our objectives of reconstructing the onset of glaciation in the greenhouse to icehouse transition, processes of dynamic ice sheet behavior during the Neogene and Quaternary, and ocean conditions associated with the glacial cycles. Over the past 34 Million years, the Antarctic continental shelf has gradually deepened due to ice sheet loading, thermal subsidence, and erosion from repeated glaciations. The deepening that is recorded in the sedimentary deposits around the Antarctic margin indicates that after the mid-Miocene Climate Optimum (≈15 Ma), Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) dynamical response to climate conditions changed. We explore end-members for maximum AIS extent, based on ice-sheet simulations of a late-Pleistocene and a mid-Miocene glaciation. Fundamental dynamical differences emerge as a consequence of atmospheric forcing, eustatic sea level and continental shelf evolution. We show that the AIS contributed to the amplification of its own sensitivity to ocean forcing by gradually expanding and eroding the continental shelf, that probably changed its tipping points through time. The lack of past topographic and bathymetric reconstructions implies that so far, we still have an incomplete understanding of AIS fast response to past warm climate conditions, which is crucial to constrain its future evolution.
