Glacio-eustatic cycles lead to changes in sedimentation on all types of continental margins. There is, however, a paucity of sedimentation rate data over eustatic sea-level cycles in active subduction zones. During International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 375, coring of the upper ∼110 m of the northern Hikurangi Trough Site U1520 recovered a turbidite-dominated succession deposited during the last ∼45 kyrs (Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 1–3). We present an age model integrating radiocarbon dates, tephrochronology, and δ18O stratigraphy, to evaluate the bed recurrence interval (RI) and sediment accumulation rate (SAR). Our analyses indicate mean bed RI varies from ∼322 yrs in MIS1, ∼49 yrs in MIS2, and ∼231 yrs in MIS3. Large (6-fold) and abrupt variations in SAR are recorded across MIS transitions, with rates of up to ∼10 m/kyr occurring during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and <1 m/kyr during MIS1 and 3. The pronounced variability in SAR, with extremely high rates during the LGM, even for a subduction zone, are the result of changes in regional sediment supply associated with climate-driven changes in terrestrial catchment erosion, and critical thresholds of eustatic sea-level change altering the degree of sediment bypassing the continental shelf and slope via submarine canyon systems. During the formation and evolution of the South China Sea, a series of multiscale submarine geomorphologies have been produced in the continental margin. The obvious submarine canyons and channels are widely distributed in the continental shelf and slope of the South China Sea. In the Taixinan Basin, several submarine canyons and channels termed as the Taixinan canyon‐channel system (TCCS) are distributed between the active and passive continental margins. Based on acquired ship‐borne multi‐beam bathymetry data in this study and the global GEBCO 2023 bathymetric dataset, we identify and define nine submarine canyons and seven submarine channels in the Taixinan Basin. The TCCS consists of the Dongsha, Taiwan, Jiulong, West Penghu, Penghu, Kaoping, Shoushan, Kaohsiung and the Fangliao canyons and submarine channels. The detailed geomorphological features of different submarine canyons and channels within the TCCS are analysed and summarized using multi‐beam bathymetry data and seismic reflection profiles across canyons. Based on the slope variations of the continental margin and the effects of turbidity currents and bottom currents on canyon, we propose a three‐stage evolutionary model of the TCCS. In the initial formation stage of canyon, the initial erosional grooves were created by tectonic activity on the continental slope and it represents the foundation of submarine canyons. During the growth and development stage, the submarine canyons are further evolved and the canyons began to deepen and widen from the continental slope to the deep‐water areas. It shows the weak erosion and sediment infilling within the canyons in this stage. On the northern continental slope of the South China Sea, continuous transportation and erosion of sediments led to the initial formation of grooves and it becomes the embryonic stage of submarine channels. The present stage of the TCCS was formed when the initial grooves on the continental slope have further developed and rebuilt under the erosion by the turbidity current and the scouring by the bottom current. In the last stage, the intense erosion by the turbidity current is supported by sediment waves around the submarine canyons and the migration of canyons is suggested by the cyclic steps formed within some canyons. The southeastern Australian margin hosts a series of submarine canyons. Although the origin and evolution of canyons within the northwestern segment of the margin is relatively well studied, their quantitative morphology, interaction with longshore drift currents and slope failure remain poorly understood in the southeastern region. In this study, high-resolution bathymetry and 3D seismic reflection datasets revealed five main submarine canyons present in the central offshore Otway Basin. The canyons have V-shaped, evolving to U-shaped morphology downslope with sedimentary infill characterized by medium–high amplitudes, recognizable stratal pattern and localized chaotic seismic reflections. Analysis reveals these canyons were initiated by retrogressive slope failure on the continental slope, that once the shelf edge was reached and subsequently incised, development of the canyon heads was influenced by the shelf parallel Zeehan Current, active on the continental shelf of the region. The heads of the shelf-incised canyons preferentially migrate northwestward and were infilled by laterally accreting sedimentary packages characterized by southeast dipping seismic reflections. These indicate an early erosive phase followed by a period of deposition, a result of the prevalent eastward flowing Zeehan Current. These results have important implications for understanding of the mechanisms that control initiation and development of submarine canyons, and their morphology, both offshore southeastern Australia, and similar settings on continental margins worldwide. The results of geochemical and Nd isotopic studies of rocks and U–Th–Pb (LA-ICP-MS) geochronological and Hf isotopic studies of detrital zircon from metaterrigenous rocks of the Kodar Group of the Udokan Complex (Aldan Shield) are presented. It is established that the age of rocks of the Kodar Group is 1.99–1.91 Ga, whereas the age of rocks of the Chinei and Kemen groups of the Udokan Complex is 1.90–1.87 Ga (Kovach et al., 2018, 2023a). This allows us to raise the issue of recognition of the Kodar Group as an independent stratigraphic subdivision. The terrigenous rocks of the group were sourced from the Archean igneous and metamorphic rock of the Chara–Olekma Geoblock and probably the Kalar and Kurulta blocks of the Stanovoi suture zone, as well as the Paleoproterozoic (2.04–1.99, 2.08, 2.20, and 2.30 Ga) complexes of active continental margins or ensialic island arcs in the western–northwestern and southern (in the present-day coordinates) frame of the Chara–Olekma Geoblock, which are unidentified in the region at the current erosion level. Erosion of rocks of magmatic arcs and the continental slope led to the deposition of rocks of the Kodar Group in a retroarc foreland basin, whereas further collapse of the orogen and the formation of an intracontinental extension basin were responsible for the deposition of terrigenous rocks of the Chinei and Kemen groups. The obtained data indicate widespread previously unidentified Paleoproterozoic continental crust formation at about 2.04–1.97 Ga in the western part of the Aldan Shield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The principal basins on the Mozambique continental margin are the Mozambique and Rovuma, on the passive continental margin with complex tectonic history, following after the East African Rift System in the Triassic. Although the first gas fields in the coastal zone of the Indian Ocean in southeast Mozambique are appeared yet in the 1960s, only in 2010, did Mozambique achieve a new status as a major world hydrocarbon player—with the discovery of a number of large gas fields in the northeast of the country, in deep-water regions of the Indian Ocean, and in the Rovuma Basin. More than 20 recently discovered gas fields are located in deep-water regions and on the continental slope of the Indian Ocean at depths of 468–2610 m. It is noteworthy that the pays of the same age, the deeper they are buried beneath the water column, the greater their volume of hydrocarbon reserves. A similar trend may help in the case of targeted oil and gas exploration. The prospects of liquid hydrocarbon discoveries are possible in the Madagascar channel behind the Davie Ridge and in deep-water parts on the slopes of the Mozambique continental margin. A comprehensive analysis of geological and geophysical data characterizing the structure of the eastern continental margin of India and the adjacent part of the bottom of the Bay of Bengal has been carried out. According to the structural and tectonic features, three sectors are distinguished: southern, central, and northern, the natural boundaries between which are the fault zones of the Makhanadi and Godavari–Krishna aulacogens. In the central sector, the pericontinental East Indian Plateau adjoins the continental slope. In 2003, the R/V Mezen acquired deep seismic sounding data on two profiles in this region. These data and their geological interpretation made it possible to identify "reduced" continental crust, characterized by reduced thickness of the upper, middle, and lower layers. A conclusion is drawn about the continental nature of the East Indian Plateau and northern part of the 85° Ridge adjacent to it. The light sialic and effusive rocks that form the top of the ridge give a negative gravimetric anomaly in the free-air reduction, which is its distinguishing feature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Submarine geohazards significantly threaten human economic activities and essential infrastructure. Based on multi‐beam data and high‐resolution 2D seismic data, two types of submarine geohazards are identified: direct and indirect geohazards on the northwestern continental slope and the Xisha Uplift of the South China Sea (SCS). Direct geohazards include submarine landslides and active faults, while indirect geohazards include buried channels, submarine canyons, pockmarks, volcanoes and magma diapirs. This study comprehensively analyzes geomorphological features, including their characteristics, genesis and distribution. Statistical analysis reveals that the gradient of the Xisha Uplift slope is steeper than the shelf break, making it a more unstable region. However, assessing disaster potential indicates that submarine geohazards at the shelf break pose a greater threat than those at the Xisha Uplift. Many factors, including tectonic activity, sediment supply and relative sea‐level changes, influence submarine geohazards' formation. These hazards do not occur in isolation but often interact with one another. Through interactions with the continental margins, incident low‐mode internal tides (ITs) can be reflected, scattered to high modes, transmitted onto the shelf and dissipated. We investigate the fate of remotely generated mode‐1 ITs in the U.S. West Coast (USWC) continental margin using two 4‐km horizontal resolution regional simulations. These 1‐year long simulations have realistic stratification, and atmospheric, tidal, and sub‐tidal forcings. In addition, one of these simulations has remote internal wave (IW) forcing at the open boundaries while the other does not. To compute the IT reflectivity of the USWC margin, we separate the IT energy fluxes into onshore and offshore propagating components using a Discrete Fourier Transform in space and time. Overall, ∼20% of the remote mode‐1 semidiurnal IT energy fluxes reflect off the USWC margin, 40% is scattered to modes 2–5, and 7% is transmitted onto the shelf while the remaining is dissipated on the continental slope. Furthermore, our results reveal that differences in stratification, slope criticality, topographic roughness and angle of incidence cause these fractions to vary spatially and temporally along the USWC margin. However, there is no clear seasonal variability in these estimates. Remote IWs enhance the advection and diffusion of heat in the continental margin, resulting in cooling at the surface and warming at depth, and a reduction in the thermocline stratification. These results suggest that low‐mode ITs can cause water mass transformation in continental margins that are far away from their generation sites. Plain Language Summary: Ocean dynamics that exist over a wide range of spatial scales, such as the internal tides (ITs), are best resolved in numerical simulations with fine grid spacings. To accomplish this, model solutions are downscaled by nesting domains with increasingly higher resolution. However, the long propagation distances of low‐mode ITs away from their generation sites necessitate their inclusion at the open boundaries of regional simulations. Here, we show that these remotely generated ITs, for example, from Hawaii, modulate turbulence in the U.S. West Coast (USWC) continental margin. Approximately 80% of the remote mode‐1 semidiurnal IT energy is available for mixing in the USWC margin. In the absence of an accurate IT forcing at the open boundaries of coastal regional models, IT mixing may be underestimated. Submarine landslides are significant geohazards, capable of displacing large volumes of sediment from continental margins to deposit mass transport complexes (MTCs) and generate offshore tsunamis. However, the reactivation of MTCs after their initial failure has long been overlooked. By analyzing high-quality three-dimensional seismic reflection data and seismic attribute maps, as well as comparing the geometry of different MTCs, we investigate the development of long-term slope instability and its hazardous consequences on the northwest flank of the Storegga Slide on the Norwegian margin. Our results demonstrate that the reactivation of MTCs can deform both their inner structure and overlying strata, promoting the formation of sinuous channels and local slope failures on the seafloor. These findings further reveal the MTCs that are underconsolidated or comprise slide blocks may remain unstable for a long time after their initial failure, particularly when affected by slope undercutting and a corresponding reduction in lateral support. Accurate parameterizations of eddy fluxes across prograde, buoyant shelf and slope currents are crucial to faithful predictions of the heat transfer and water mass transformations in high-latitude ocean environments in ocean climate models. In this work we evaluate several parameterization schemes of eddy buoyancy fluxes in predicting the mean state of prograde current systems using a set of coarse-resolution noneddying simulations, the solutions of which are compared against those of fine-resolution eddy-resolving simulations with nearly identical model configurations. It is found that coarse-resolution simulations employing the energetically constrained GEOMETRIC parameterization can accurately reconstruct the prograde mean flow state, provided that the suppression of eddy buoyancy diffusivity over the continental slope is accounted for. The prognostic subgrid-scale eddy energy budget in the GEOMETRIC parameterization scheme effectively captures the varying trend of the domain-wide eddy energy level in response to environmental changes, even though the energy budget is not specifically designed for a sloping-bottomed ocean. Local errors of the predicted eddy energy are present but do not compromise the predictive skill of the GEOMETRIC parameterization for prograde current systems. This work lays a foundation for improving the representation of prograde current systems in coarse-resolution ocean climate models. Significance Statement: The objective of this study is to evaluate different methods for predicting ocean volume transports caused by ocean mesoscale eddies across continental margins. This is important because these transports play a critical role in exchanges between coastal seas and open oceans, but cannot be resolved or well represented in ocean climate simulations. This study emphasizes the importance of accounting for the influence of sloping seafloors in controlling the eddy transport across the continental slope. Results of modern studies of the earth's crust based on the gravitational data of the GOCE satellite have been used for the first time in a comparative metallogenic analysis of the geodynamic settings of the formation of polymetallic deposits in the folded frame of the Siberian and East European platforms. It is shown that deposits of the sedimentary exhalative deposits (SEDEX) type are more often located in the earth's crust with the dominating development of the lower "basaltic" layer. Pyrite copper and lead–zinc volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, as well as some manifestations of the SEDEX type, occur in supra-subduction island-arc and accretionary settings in the crust with the dominating development of the middle "granitic" layer. Pb-Zn ores of the Mississippi Valley type (MVT) are localized in deep pericratonic sedimentary oil and gas basins on the shelf and continental slope, with no spatial relationship to the stratification of the earth's crust. The Ag polymetallic mineralization of Taimyr and the Western Verkhoyansk region are confined to deep pericratonic rift troughs on the passive continental margin. They have a similar ore-bearing environment and can be combined into a single silver polymetallic Taimyr–Western Verkhoyansk belt. The results confirm the prospects of Pb-Zn deposits in Central and Eastern Taimyr and also in the Saurey ore region (Polar Urals), indicating the need for their further research. It is well known that strong low-mode internal tides generated in Luzon Strait propagate westward to impinge continental slopes in the northeastern South China Sea (SCS). The reflection and scattering of these internal tides including diurnal and semidiurnal components on the slopes are quantitatively investigated using two sets of mooring data and a linear internal tide model with realistic topography and stratification. Flux reflections computed from mooring data collected on the continental slopes are consistent with the linear model. Based on the results of the observations and simulations, a map of low-mode internal tide reflection and scattering coefficients along the continental margin in the northeastern SCS is revealed. On average, diurnal internal tides lose 38% of their energy to high modes (≥mode 4) that are assumed to dissipate on the slopes, transmit 28% onto the continental shelf, and reflect 31% back to the deep ocean. On the contrary, most of the semidiurnal energy (89%) transmits onto the continental shelf, and only 11% is scattered to high modes (7%) and reflected back to the deep ocean (4%). For diurnal internal tides, a large fraction of energy that is scattered to high modes and reflected back to the deep sea can be attributed to the critical–supercritical slopes, while the weak reflection for the semidiurnal energy is due to the subcritical slopes. These quantitative descriptions for evolutions of low-mode internal tides incident to the slopes provide an energy budget map on the continental slopes in the northeastern SCS. We have analyzed the MZ6 onshore‐offshore wide‐angle seismic profile of the MOZ3‐5 survey to investigate the crustal structure of the South Mozambique passive margin. The NNW‐SSE, 625 km‐long profile runs across the Mozambique coastal plain (MCP), the Continental Shelf and Slope, the Almirante Leite Ridge (ALR), the North Natal Valley (NNV), the Ariel Graben and the Dana Plateau of the Mozambique Ridge. Forward modeling through combined interpretation of the multichannel seismic, the main reflected and refracted phases of the wide‐angle, drill hole data and bathymetric data reveal: (a) a sedimentary cover poorly compacted up to 3 km‐thick, intruded by magmatic dykes that reach the seafloor at the ALR forming 0.5 to 5 km‐wide corrugated mounts, (b) between 2 and 7 km, thick magmatic or volcano‐clastic deposits are observed both at the MCP and NNV, forming a 40 km‐wide terrace at the center of MZ6 and southward‐dipping reflectors in the southern part interpreted as the Pre‐Neocomian Formation contemporary of the Karroo and/or Bombeni‐Movene magmatic events reached in several wells, (c) onshore, the 3‐layered crust reaches 39 km thickness, gradually thinning to ∼27 km at the southern end of MZ6. In the deepest layer, velocities exceed 7.15 km/s, reaching at its base 7.55 km/s at the vertical of the ALR. (d) the seismic Moho is marked by a strong reflection on the wide‐angle data. These results suggests that the basement is composed of slightly thinned and altered continental crust, most likely intruded by several phases of intense magmatism. The dispersion of the pieces, linked to the closure and disappearance of the Thetys paleo‐ocean, gave the birth of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. In detail, the initial position of each piece of this jigsaw is of great importance as it has an impact on our understanding of the genesis of the continental passive margins, the role of tectonic inheritance, the pre‐rift and post‐rift evolution of the topography dynamic (vertical movement) and of the geodynamic of the plates (horizontal movement). Nevertheless, in the Western Indian Ocean, the initial pre‐beak‐up position of Antarctica plate respect to Africa plate is still under debate, mainly due to the lack of deep geophysical data. In 2016, an academic‐industrial collaboration succeeded in acquiring deep information along seven seismic profiles crossing the North Natal Valley (NNV) off the coast of Mozambique. The results falsify the presence of an oceanic crust in that area and thus most of the plate reconstruction models. The NNV presents a thick continental crust intrudedded by several phases of intense magmatism, with at its top, a volcano‐clastic pre‐Neocomian Fm contemporary of the crustal thinning and subsequent spreading between Africa and Patagonia plates. Active continental margins are tectonic sites with complex sedimentary processes. Tectono–sedimentary interactions occur over geological time and determine the modern morphology of the margin. However, such interactions have been poorly documented in high‐latitude regions. This study focuses on deep‐water sedimentary systems on the South Shetland convergent margin, which is the only remaining active continental margin in Antarctica. Numerous gullies, 20 canyons and three contourite drifts are identified by interpreting bathymetry, oceanography and reflection seismic data. Heavy mineral contents of a gravity core, located at a downslope elongated mounded drift, show the asynchronous interplay of downslope and alongslope processes. The rest of the margin is dominated by turbidity currents. Variations in the slope gradient control thalweg profiles and sinuosity of canyons. Tectonic‐related morphology restricts the distribution of contourite drifts. Earthquakes triggered by underplating and tectonic compression may induce slope instability at the lower flank of the plastered drift. Tectonic uplift influences the amount of sediments transported by ice sheets and controls the shelf stacking pattern. The mixed turbidite–contourite system transitions to separated canyon and drift systems from passive to active continental margins under the influence of the tectonic‐related morphology. A systematic comparison has been made among several convergent margins with similar tectonic settings. Results suggest that submarine canyons on these shelf‐slope systems have similar morphological features and are comparable in size. Coarse sediment input and steep continental slopes (mean slope 7 to 10°) control the canyon morphology on these margins. Therefore, this research has important implications for furthering the current understanding of sedimentary systems on high‐latitude convergent margins and tectono–sedimentary interactions. Antarctic Bottom Water is primarily formed via overflows of dense shelf water (DSW) around the Antarctic continental margins. The dynamics of these overflows therefore influence the global abyssal stratification and circulation. Previous studies indicate that dense overflows can be unstable, energizing topographic Rossby waves (TRW) over the continental slope. However, it remains unclear how the wavelength and frequency of the TRWs are related to the properties of the overflowing DSW and other environmental conditions, and how the TRW properties influence the downslope transport of DSW. This study uses idealized high-resolution numerical simulations to investigate the dynamics of overflow-forced TRWs and the associated downslope transport of DSW. It is shown that the propagation of TRWs is constrained by the geostrophic along-slope flow speed of the DSW and by the dynamics of linear plane waves, allowing the wavelength and frequency of the waves to be predicted a priori. The rate of downslope DSW transport depends nonmonotonically on the slope steepness: steep slopes approximately suppress TRW formation, resulting in steady, frictionally dominated DSW descent. For slopes of intermediate steepness, the overflow becomes unstable and generates TRWs, accompanied by interfacial form stresses that drive DSW downslope relatively rapidly. For gentle slopes, the TRWs lead to the formation of coherent eddies that inhibit downslope DSW transport. These findings may explain the variable properties of TRWs observed in oceanic overflows, and they imply that the rate at which DSW descends to the abyssal ocean depends sensitively on the manifestation of TRWs and/or nonlinear eddies over the continental slope. Benthic samples collected from depths ranging between 686 and 2410 m along the Brazilian continental upper slope from Rio de Janeiro State to Santa Catarina State (23°S to 27°S) yielded a wealth of tanaidacean material, including two new species of Stenotanais. This is the first described species of the family Akanthophoreidae from Brazilian waters. Stenotanais leonardoi sp. nov. has a combination of unique characters including the uropod basal article longer than the pleotelson and the exopod somewhat wider than the endopod, longer than the endopod article-1 (0.7 times endopod length) and supporting two flat and wide terminal setae. Stenotanais uropedon sp. nov. is recognisable by its oar-shaped uropod endopod, with article-2 large, broad and flattened and the short exopod, only 0.3 times the endopod length. An identification key to the species of Stenotanais is given. These two species bring the total number of described akanthophoreids to 56 species and that of all tanaidaceans in Brazilian waters to 66 species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work presents the results of long-term deep-water observations carried out in the southwestern Adriatic margin. Hydrodynamics and thermohaline measurements were carried out in the last 100 m of the water column using two long-term moorings placed at two different locations along the western sector of the Adriatic continental margin (open slope vs. submarine canyon). The observations, carried out over a period of almost 10 years, made it possible to define the intra- and interannual deep-water dynamics, which are mainly influenced by the passage of cold, dense water. The hydrodynamic field is influenced by seasonal behavior and varies from year to year, with no clear temporal trend or periodicity. Thermohaline properties follow hydrodynamics but also show a climatological trend toward higher temperatures and salinity. The combination and variability of preconditioning factors explains the interannual variability in dense water passage at the mooring sites triggering the formation of dense water in the northern Adriatic. The impulsive nature of the dense water flow, which is difficult to capture with sporadic oceanographic surveys, and its linkage with the large-scale atmospheric circulation make continuous monitoring essential to answer open questions about cascading processes and deep-water dynamics under a global change scenario. The geodynamic response of continental margins to erosion may reveal current and past changes in the location of the continental slope. We model the three‐dimensional isostatic response to erosion along the retreating Beringian Margin to test the hypothesis that the margin and its canyons were dominantly eroded during the Pleistocene. Our results predict 900 m of flexural uplift, though evidence for this magnitude of uplift is not observed in Pleistocene and younger deposits, suggesting a substantial amount of margin erosion occurred pre‐Pleistocene. Uplift of this magnitude may be represented by a Late Miocene unconformity across the Bering Shelf and upwarped subsurface units at the base of the Beringian Margin. The distribution of uplift from varying canyon incision and margin retreat scenarios has implications for the extent of geodynamic response during erosional periods. Plain Language Summary: Reconstructing the balance between erosion and deposition along continental margins necessitates constraining multiple variables such as sedimentation rates, tectonic subsidence, isostatic compensation, and compaction. However, reconstructing this balance along erosion‐dominated margins is hindered by the inherent removal (from eroding areas) and access challenges (deep‐water, where eroded materials deposit) to geologic records of erosion. We use geodynamics to link erosion and the resulting rebound of the crust to constrain the magnitude and timing of continental margin retreat. We model the isostatic response to a range of submarine erosion scenarios along the Beringian Margin, which are hypothesized to have formed primarily during the Pleistocene. Our results show that the magnitude of uplift predicted by the mass of sediment removed along the Beringian is too substantial to have entirely occurred since the Pleistocene, suggesting the canyons are older than previously thought. Geophysical subsurface data may instead favor isostatic upwarping that began as early as the Miocene suggesting that margin retreat and canyon incision along the deeply incised Beringian Margin has been ongoing for several millions of years. Continental margins usually have a high degree of environmental heterogeneity, which, in turn, promotes high benthic biodiversity. The South-Southeast regions concentrate the most well-mapped areas of the Brazilian continental margin regarding seafloor geomorphology and physical oceanography. However, the structure of the soft-sediment benthic fauna of the continental slope is still unknown. Characterization and understanding of the Brazilian continental slope biota are imperative since human activities are increasing in the last decades, especially after the discovery of the pre-salt reservoir in Santos Basin. In this study, we aimed to establish a baseline of the spatial distribution of the benthic macrofaunal communities regarding their latitudinal and bathymetric patterns in the Santos Basin to support future environmental monitoring activities in the region. As part of the Santos Project - The Santos Basin Regional Environmental Characterization (PCR-BS) - coordinated by CENPES/PETROBRAS, a benthic oceanographic cruise was carried out in 2019. Sediment samples were collected using a GOMEX-type box corer in 47 stations distributed in eight transects (4002,400 m depth range). In total, 12 additional stations (1,300-2,200 m) were defined to cover an area where oil and gas are exploited. Our results showed that macrofaunal assemblages of the Santos Basin present strong depth zonation related to changes in organic matter input, as well as to temperature, carbonate, and grain size. At local scale, the northern sector stood out for having a higher abundance of macrofauna in the upper slope (400 m) and it probably reflects the oceanographic processes and the organic enrichment caused by the upwelling events that occur at Cabo Frio region. The zonation pattern and the dominance of some polychaete, peracarid crustacean, and bivalve families were similar to other SE Brazilian continental margins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Canada ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 2003. With that ratification is an obligation to submit data and information to the U.N. pertaining to the limits of the country's extended continental shelf (ECS); the portion of the juridical continental shelf that extends beyond 200 nautical miles. A team of Canadian scientists, managers, and legal experts that included representation from three Federal Departments (Natural Resources Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Global Affairs Canada) with additional support from other departments, spent 13 years compiling and acquiring data to provide the scientific evidence to support delineation of Canada's seaward most maritime limit. The submission has the potential to provide Canada with 2.4 million km2 of additional submarine landmass in the Atlantic and the Arctic oceans over which Canada exercises sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring and exploiting its natural resources. Specific information such as the tectonic framework of the continental margin, the geomorphology of the margin and in particular the continental slope, the geologic nature of adjoined ridges, rises, and plateaux, and sediment thickness within adjacent basins are examples of fundamental pieces of geoscientific information needed to substantiate Canada's outermost maritime limits. This paper highlights a number of segments of Canada's continental margins to showcase this scientific evidence and how it is applied in the UNCLOS context. In doing so, the paper demonstrates the geologic complexity of Canada's margins as illustrated in scientific publications that have resulted from these new data collections, while at the same time presenting new scientific evidence and interpretations. This collection of data and information provides a wealth of new knowledge in Canada's offshore regions. The massive data compilation in the Atlantic led to conception of continental margins, in a source-to-sink scenario, as having an equilibrium base level or graded form, comparable to river systems. Departures from this shape relate to the interplay of sedimentary processes and in particular to those processes that do not fit the source-to-sink paradigm. For example, a significant part of the Atlantic margin is shown to be heavily influenced by along-slope geostrophic currents that generated massive contourite drift deposits. These deposits reflect lateral transport of sediment that had a significant impact on the morphology of the margin. The role of mass transport processes in shaping continental margins is also highlighted, and in particular the collapses of entire segments of the margin were observed. The prominent role mass failure processes play in delivering sediment to the adjacent abyssal plain is also critical in the ECS context. These observations challenge the entrenched notion of a continental margin comprising a shelf, slope, and rise and in particular the concept of the "continental rise". Prior to 2006, regions of the Arctic Ocean seaward of the Canadian landmass had fewer than 5000 km of seismic reflection data. The massive efforts of Arctic coastal States to map their margins for ECS purposes have led to a leap in technological advances to acquire data in ice-covered seas and have led to a wealth of new geoscientific knowledge. Perhaps foremost amongst this knowledge is demonstration that Canada Basin is indeed a fully developed ocean basin, albeit significantly infilled with sediment. Based on this knowledge and identification of related structures, new realistic tectonic scenarios for opening of the Amerasia Basin are proposed that include a significant component of transform or strike-slip motions. With seismic velocity and rock sample information, the continental nature of Alpha and Mendeleev ridges has been substantiated. Even bathymetric data were lacking in the Arctic and new editions of seafloor maps now support grids of 500 m spacing; although some regions remain sparse. Once thought to be relatively stagnant, sedimentary processes such as found in many ocean basins were discovered in the Arctic Ocean. Evidence of geostrophic currents, sediment mass failures, and deep-sea turbidity current channels were found to be ubiquitous, even in the deepest parts of the Arctic's basins. The Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) is the main component of the deep limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Off northeast Brazil, the DWBC breaks up into southwestward‐propagating anticyclones. In this study, we investigate the breakup mechanism with hydrographic observations, eddy‐resolving numerical model outputs, and theory. Here, we present a quasi‐synoptic map of geostrophic velocities and stream function at the DWBC core level between 2.5°S and 11°S. We observe, in horizontal distributions of velocities, that the DWBC breakup site is linked to a topographic feature of the Brazilian continental margin centered at 8°S: the Pernambuco Plateau (PP). Moreover, both observations and model outputs hint at a possible DWBC separation near the PP preceding anticyclone genesis. We test, with three different theories from the literature, whether or not the DWBC separates at 8°S. The results of the tests converge to indicate that the DWBC undergoes a local and intermittent inertial separation while contouring the PP. Downstream of its separation at the plateau, the DWBC sheds eddies similarly to previously reported laboratory experiments. In addition, a regional analysis of energy transfer shows that barotropic instability significantly contributes to the anticyclones growth between 8°S and 13°S. Analysis of the energy budget and separation of waters related to the AMOC pathways into the basin interior provide a better understanding for later studies about heat fluxes and ventilation in the deep tropical South Atlantic. Among many properties, these waters transport energy from the Northern to the Southern Hemisphere, thousands of meters below the surface. Along the deep ocean off northeast Brazil, this current breaks up into large whirlpools of water that rotate counterclockwise while propagating southwestward. These whirlpools in the ocean are know as eddies. We observe that the eddy formation is linked to a feature of the Brazilian continental margin: the Pernambuco Plateau (PP). Moreover, both shipboard data and numerical model outputs hint at a possible separation of the deep current near the PP prior to the eddy formation. We test the separation with theories and the results converge to indicate that the deep current undergoes a local separation off the continental slope while contouring the PP. In addition, we present that the eddies grow by feeding off the energy from the deep current. The local separation and regional energy exchange along this deep current contribute to further discussions about the pathways of the AMOC and heat fluxes in the South Atlantic. Depth‐averaged eddy buoyancy diffusivities across continental shelves and slopes are investigated using a suite of eddy‐resolving, process‐oriented simulations of prograde frontal currents characterized by isopycnals tilted in the opposite direction to the seafloor, a flow regime commonly found along continental margins under downwelling‐favorable winds or occupied by buoyant boundary currents. The diagnosed cross‐slope eddy diffusivity varies by up to three orders of magnitude, decaying from O104m2/s $\mathcal{O}\left(1{0}^{4}\hspace*{.5em}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}/\mathrm{s}\right)$ in the relatively flat‐bottomed region to O10m2/s $\mathcal{O}\left(10\hspace*{.5em}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}/\mathrm{s}\right)$ over the steep continental slope, consistent with previously reported suppression effects of steep topography on baroclinic eddy fluxes. To theoretically constrain the simulated cross‐slope eddy fluxes, we examine extant scalings for eddy buoyancy diffusivities across prograde shelf/slope fronts and in flat‐bottomed oceans. Among all tested scalings, the GEOMETRIC framework developed by D. P. Marshall et al. (2012, https://doi.org/10.1175/JPO-D-11-048.1) and a parametrically similar Eady scale‐based scaling proposed by Jansen et al. (2015, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocemod.2015.05.007) most accurately reproduce the diagnosed eddy diffusivities across the entire shelf‐to‐open‐ocean analysis regions in our simulations. This result relies upon the incorporation of the topographic suppression effects on eddy fluxes, quantified via analytical functions of the slope Burger number, into the scaling prefactor coefficients. The predictive skills of the GEOMETRIC and Eady scale‐based scalings are shown to be insensitive to the presence of along‐slope topographic corrugations. This work lays a foundation for parameterizing eddy buoyancy fluxes across large‐scale prograde shelf/slope fronts in coarse‐resolution ocean models. However, these models are limited in accuracy because they cannot resolve all crucial processes in the climate system due to computational resource limitations. One such process is the oceanic "mesoscale" turbulence (swirling ocean flows that are tens to hundreds of kilometers wide) across continental margins. These flows impact coastal circulation and ecosystems by mediating material exchanges between coastal and open‐ocean environments. By running computer simulations that can explicitly resolve mesoscale turbulence, we show that heat transport by mesoscale flows becomes less efficient over continental margins than that in the open ocean, due to the presence of the sloping seafloor. After taking this reduced efficiency into account, we are able to predict the heat transport by mesoscale flows across continental margins by adapting established theories for the open‐ocean environment. This work provides a basis for improving the performance of climate models, especially near coastal regions. The results of modern studies of the lithosphere based on the GOCE satellite gravity data were used for the first time for a comparative metallogenic analysis of the geodynamic settings of the formation of Pb–Zn deposits in the folded frame of the Siberian platform. Sedimentary-exhalative polymetallic deposits (Baikal and Taimyr systems) are most often found in the areas with predominant development of the lower "basalt" layer of the Earth's crust. Pyrite copper and lead–zinc deposits are mainly characteristic of suprasubduction island-arc and accretionary settings on the consolidated crust with the predominant development of the middle "granite" layer (Yenisei Ridge). The MVT-type lead–zinc ores, which are closely associated with pericratonic deep sedimentary petroleum basins on the shelf and the continental slope do not obviously have a spatial relationship with the stratification of the Earth's crust. The similarity between the geodynamic settings of the formation of the silver-polymetallic deposits in Southern Taimyr and Western Verkhoyansk confined to the pericratonic rift troughs on the passive continental margin is revealed, which makes it possible to combine them into single silver-polymetallic Taimyr—Western Verkhoyansk belt. The dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) have profound implications for the evolution of the Antarctic continental margin, global ocean currents, and climate changes. Marine sediments from the Antarctic continental margins recorded the history of the advance and retreat of the AIS. In this study, we present an integrated analysis of the sedimentary characteristics of the Early Miocene to Late Miocene of the Ross Sea by using 2D seismic reflection data and cores from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 374 Sites U1521, U1522, and U1524. The characteristics of the seismic facies and sediments show that the expansion and grounding of the ice sheets across the continental shelf significantly influenced the depositional processes, leading to increased glacial erosion, the formation of prograding wedges, mass transport deposits (MTDs), and mixed (turbidite-contourite) depositional systems since the Early Miocene. The seaward migration of the continental shelf edge and the steepening of the continental slope were mainly influenced by the glaciation of extreme expansion of the AIS. Marked increases in the prograding wedge and MTD are associated with extensive sediment reworking and deposition at the grounding zones and along the continental slope as a result of ice sheet expansion. The development of the mixed (turbidite-contourite) depositional systems was the result of extensive sediment reworking and deposition by gravity flows and bottom currents on the continental slope and the rise. Submarine canyons are the key structures of the transitional area between the deep ocean floor and continental shelf known as the continental slope. They are important submarine features with high ecological, economic, and scientific value. With continual improvements to global and regional marine bathymetry products, digital bathymetric analysis (DBA) techniques must evolve to support ongoing marine geological research and to advance international bathymetric feature catalogs and mapping products. This study aims to further advance the delineation of submarine canyons and associated sea channels using DBA and the recent open-access GEBCO_2019 global bathymetry grid with 15 arc-second resolution, for a small study region in the southern Celtic Sea. A modified semi-automated delineation method is presented based on combining hydrological network analysis and the topographic position index (TPI), a commonly used parameter available in conventional digital terrain analysis toolsets. For the case-study area of interest, 96 submarine canyons were identified, with higher morphological detail than the previous ETOPO1 and SRTM30_PLUS based studies, which identified 81 and 52 submarine canyons, respectively for the same area of interest. The improvements include an increased number of vertices and limbs per canyon, increased positional precision for canyon starting points and endpoints, and the ability to identify associated sea channels. The results also highlight the importance of pre-processing and parameter localization to effectively exploit higher-resolution bathymetric data, which should also improve scale adaptability for application in different types of continental margins and with high-resolution bathymetry products. Debris avalanche deposits are developed on slopes in various environments, including submarine volcanoes, continental volcanoes, continental slopes, and mountain ranges. In contrast, research is relatively scarce on the coarse-grained subaqueous debris avalanche deposits formed by the collapse of steep basin margins in continental small rift basins, which are controlled by tectonics. Through the interpretation of satellite imagery, field investigations, and the study of the morphological characteristics and internal structures of sediments, a massive debris avalanche event during the Early Cretaceous, Xiguayuan Formation of the Luanping Basin at the northern edge of the Yanshan tectonic belt on the North China Block, named the Wangying Debris Avalanche Deposit (WYDAD), has been identified and analyzed for its kinematics, dynamics, and long-runout mechanisms. The study reveals that based on sedimentology, internal structures, and basal characteristics, five different types of sedimentary morphologies can be identified from the source zone to the distal zone: convergent ridges and grooves (longitudinal expansion and lateral compression), transverse ridges and grooves (compression), longitudinal ridges and grooves (shearing and stretching), arcuate ridges and grooves (compression), and mixed sediments (radial extension). The grain size of coarse-grained debris avalanche deposits decreases with increasing transport distance and fragmentation due to jigsaw cracking, while matrix content increases. Additionally, the entrainment of fine-grained substrate and the mixing of lake waters during the transport of debris avalanches often evolve into secondary debris flows or high-density turbidity currents. Debris avalanches are likely primarily controlled by regional tectonic activity and volcanic action. Compared to subaerial debris avalanche deposits, the subaqueous WYDAD exhibits characteristics such as low fragmentation, smooth underwater terrain due to water resistance and buoyancy, and higher fluidity. The mechanism for the long-distance, high-speed transport of the WYDAD is explained by "hydroplaning" and high pore pressure generated by non-draining shear. This study provides insights into the transport processes of coarse-grained subaqueous debris avalanche deposits in continental rift basins. Clinoforms are ubiquitous depositional surfaces in sedimentary systems. The quintessential shape, with a flat or gentle topset, sloping foreset, and gentle to flat bottomset, is recognizable in the smallest ripple to the kilometer high edges of the continents. Essentially the shape is one which develops with differential sedimentation away from a sedimentary source. Systematic decay of transport competence and/or sediment amount from a site favouring deposition, generates differential loading of a typically lens-shaped sedimentary body. The lithology, grain size, water depth, hydrodynamic factors, transport mechanisms, antecedent topography, relative sea level and sediment rate all interact to create different sizes, slopes and shapes. Meanwhile there are several fundamental similarities between clinoforms, even with the smallest bedwave features (ripples and dunes), despite forming under very different depositional conditions. All clinoforms are to some extent governed by accommodation and energy limiting factors (water agitation and/or flow regime), which controls their height, and by proxy influences slope angle. Lithology exerts a fundamental control, slopes can build to angle of repose, which is higher for coarser non-cohesive sediment, while cohesive sediment develops gentler slopes, and also fail at lower angles. Sediment at angle of repose create steep linear slopes, or slope segments, but conversely linear slopes on continental margins are extremely low angle, probably reflecting high sediment with little along-slope contrast and mud-dominance. Meanwhile clinothems of similar lithology display a wide range of foreset angles, indicating numerous additional controls. Sedimentation rate appears to exert significant control on slope steepness, with limited sedimentation promoting steeper slopes related to basinward thinning deposits. The observation of steeper slopes with greater depth is a response to deepening environments generating the effect of comparatively less sedimentation. Processes are important in controlling slope angle as tidal and wave reworking, debris flows, and overpressure and slope failure, typically create lower angles. Turbidity currents meanwhile are part of a dynamic depositional system which can both steepen or lower a slope. There are four basic clinoform shapes: concave, linear, convex, and sigmoidal. These develop in response to variations in sedimentation along the profile driven by erosion/bypass/factors limiting deposition/accumulation/waning sediment supply. Curvature tends to be an indication of along-slope contrast, such as between erosional and deposition, sandier and muddier lithology or higher and lower sedimentation. Sigmoidal clinothems, associated with more accommodation and higher trajectories, are typically shorter and steeper than concave clinothems. Decaying shear-zone agitation and/or reworking and erosion shapes the rounded rollover. Decaying sediment amount and carrying capacity shapes the ensuing curvature. Concave slopes, lacking topsets and associated with sharp rollovers and low angle trajectories, are often longer with lower angle than sigmoidal forms. Their formation is likely closely linked to increased lower slope accumulation through slope failure, bypass, and/or turbidity currents, but can also be from increased suspension-dominated deposition in smaller clinoforms. In this ripples differ, as the concave to sigmoidal transition is associated with higher energy and erosion rounding the crest, and unlike larger clinoforms, the concave is often steeper than the sigmoidal. This paper presents a detailed description of the lithostratigraphy of mostly contouritic deposits from the Piedra Buena Terrace (PBT), collected at water depth of 2–2.5 km. It is based upon a multi-proxy investigation of five gravity cores, including visual description and scanning, grain size distributions, microfossils and sand fraction study, supported by the analysis of high-resolution sub-bottom profiles. Two older seismic units were identified in addition to those previously described in the area. The defined lithostratigraphic units were correlated to the upper seismic units, while the age of the younger units was confirmed using AMS-14C dating. In terms of the sedimentary facies, the dark quartz-glauconitic sands, which seem to be a fingerprint of the Piedra Buena Terrace, were investigated by applying the X-ray diffraction and performing grain SEM - SE images. The sandy facies correspond to sea-level low-stands during cold glacials (MIS 2 and MIS 4), when glauconite and terrigenous material were transported from the emerged shelf down and along the Patagonian continental slope by vigorous bottom currents. The latter is confirmed by an occurrence of parts of bi-gradational sequences reported from the grain-size distributions in lithostratigraphic units 2 and 4. Units 1 and 3, represented by mostly hemipelagic calcareous ooze, were formed during warm high sea-level stages (MIS 1 and 3). Unlike Unit 1, Unit 3 also demonstrates clear contourite features, similar to Units 2 and 4. They include common bioturbation, occurrence of mottles, lenses, irregular thin layers of sand, erosional boundaries and hiatuses between and within the units, good sorting of fine sands, and microfossil reworking. Together with our previous data from canyons on the Perito Moreno Terrace and the Ameghino segment, supported by available publications from the PBT and Mar del Plata areas, this study demonstrates that the Patagonian Continental Margin could be used as a natural laboratory to investigate and better understand contourite systems. • Massive quartz-glauconite sands discovered on the PBT. • Detailed litho- and chronostratigraphy provided for ∼70 ka. • Contourite sediments identified between ∼70 and ∼14ka. • More developped glauconitization phase during glacials. • New seismic units and unconformities identified in the PBT. Paleozoic (Silurian and Devonian) cherts from Western Bulgaria occur in three tectonic units: Svoge, Lyubash-Golo Bardo and Morava. The SiO2 content in these rocks varies from 76.06% to 96.02%. The silica source and depositional settings of the cherts have been interpreted based on the received geochemical major element data. The calculated Si/(Si+Fe+Al+Ca) ratio and Al-Fe-Mn diagram plotting at non-hydrothermal field suggest that most of silica in the cherts is biogenic or both biogenic and terrigenous in origin. On the other hand, all studied siliceous samples plot into the field of the continental margin sediment environments on the Fe2O3/TiO2 vs. Al2O3/(Al2O3+Fe2O3) diagram. Shallow seabed depressions attributed to focused fluid seepage, known as pockmarks, have been documented in all continental margins. In this study, we demonstrate how pockmark formation can be the result of a combination of multiple factors—fluid type, overpressures, seafloor sediment type, stratigraphy and bottom currents. We integrate multibeam echosounder and seismic reflection data, sediment cores and pore water samples, with numerical models of groundwater and gas hydrates, from the Canterbury Margin (off New Zealand). More than 6800 surface pockmarks, reaching densities of 100 per km2, and an undefined number of buried pockmarks, are identified in the middle to outer shelf and lower continental slope. Fluid conduits across the shelf and slope include shallow to deep chimneys/pipes. Methane with a biogenic and/or thermogenic origin is the main fluid forming flow and escape features, although saline and freshened groundwaters may also be seeping across the slope. The main drivers of fluid flow and seepage are overpressure across the slope generated by sediment loading and thin sediment overburden above the overpressured interval in the outer shelf. Other processes (e.g. methane generation and flow, a reduction in hydrostatic pressure due to sea‐level lowering) may also account for fluid flow and seepage features, particularly across the shelf. Submarine mega‐slides involving hundreds of cubic kilometers of slope material pose a major threat due to their potential to destroy offshore infrastructure and trigger devastating tsunamis. The Sahara Slide Complex affected about 50,000 km2 of the northwestern (NW) African continental margin. Previous studies focused either on its distal depositional zone or the uppermost headwall area, but failed in reconstructing the succession of individual slide events within the entire headwall area. New hydroacoustic data reveal a complex slide morphology including three main acoustic facies, large scale slide blocks, linear troughs, multiple glide planes and three major headwall scarps (the upper, southern and lower headwall). The evacuated slide scar hosts chaotic slide deposits that cover stratified sediments in the upper and southern headwall area, but are vertically stacked onto older slide deposits in the lower headwall area. Based on these observations, and dating of recently collected sediment samples, we reconstructed the history of slope failures that led to the formation of the structurally and morphologically complex headwall area of the Sahara Slide. Slope instability initiated when the lower headwall failed at ∼60 kyr, followed by the failure of the northeastern upper headwall at ∼14 kyr. Around 6 kyr, a major slide within the upper headwall area took place, followed by a series of smaller events within the southern and most‐proximal upper headwall area. The youngest of these slides occurred around 2 kyr. This scenario suggests a long‐lasting history of successive slope failures for the Sahara Slide Complex along the NW African continental slope. The Sahara Slide Complex is a submarine landslide that affected an area of about 50,000 km2 offshore the coast of northwestern Africa. It is important to know the mechanisms and the geological framework of the Sahara Slide Complex to better understand the risk of such large landslides to coastal populations and infrastructure. Therefore, we collected data for imaging the seafloor, understanding the structure below the seafloor and reconstructing ages of individual slide bodies. Three areas with submarine landslides were found in the headwall area of the Sahara Slide Complex. We observed landslide material and lined troughs on the seafloor. Our data show a long history of unstable slopes in the Sahara slide Complex area: it began around 60,000 years BP at the lower headwall, followed by the northeastern part of the upper headwall area at 14,000 years BP. The main slide of the upper headwall area occurred at 6,000 years BP. Slides in the southern headwall area and shallowest part of the upper headwall area appeared with the youngest slide at 2,000 years BP. The frontal emplacement of the submarine and sublacustrine mass-transport complexes (MTCs) are subdivided into the frontally emergent and confined types. However, it remains unclear what factors control the variability of the frontal emplacement of submarine MTCs. High-resolution 2D and 3D seismic data are utilized to investigate the variability of four MTCs_1–4. The results show that (1) Four MTCs_1–4 herein in the lower slope are subdivided into frontally emergent MTCs_1 and 2 and frontally confined MTCs_3 and 4 (2) The magnitude (e.g., length, width, area and volume); of (frontally) emergent MTCs_1 and 2 is larger than that of confined MTCs_3 and 4; (3) Their flow directions and sources are variable; (4) Height drop (HD) and depth of the basal shear surface (DB) of emergent and confined MTCs_1–4 are greatly variable. Their HDs and DBs as controlling factors present/determine their gravitational potential energy, and HD/DB ratio controls their emplacement type (frontal emergence or confinement). High gravitational potential energy (mainly determined by high HD) of the sliding mass enables landslides to ramp out on the coeval seafloor, resulting in the creation of the gentle and/or moderate fontal ramps. Low potential energy (mainly presented by large DB) of the sliding mass prevents landslides from overrunning the undeformed downslope strata, forming the steep frontal ramps. Scales of sedimentation accumulation rate, slope gradient and earthquakes as possible triggering factors affect variability of MTCs_1–4. The sources of emergent MTCs_1 and 2 are from the continental margin slope. Confined MTC_3 comes from the upper slope of the northern flank of the Xisha uplift and confined MTC_4 derives from a point source (local lower slope). The variability of their gravitational potential energy, mainly depending on variable HDs and DBs, predominantly determines the emplacement variability of submarine MTCs and eventually affects their variable evolutions. This work presents the first known application of a new approach to tsunami modelling, by linking a discrete cellular automata (CA) dynamic model of a submarine landslide to an off-the-shelf tsunami modelling package. This has the advantage of simulating the temporal evolution of the submarine landslide rather than as a single rigid sliding mass. We first tested that the coupled model was able to satisfactorily reproduce observed tsunami wave heights resulting from the flank collapse of the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait (Indonesia) in December 2018, before applying it to a speculative area of interest on the North Borneo (Continental) Shelf (NBS). The NBS has one of the thickest near-shore clastic sediment wedges known globally (12 km thickness) and a very long pre-history of submarine landsliding. We modelled a small slide (5 km3 volume) because this is far more likely to occur than a recurrence of the gigantic Brunei slide (1200 km3 volume). Results indicate that a 5 km3 submarine landslide generates multiple tsunami waves, the largest of which reached 8 m at the coast of nearby Balabac Island (The Philippines). Small tsunami waves also arrived on the central Vietnam coast, more than 900 km distant. A larger potential failure on the NBS therefore appears capable of causing a tsunami with greater runup heights, which could pose a risk to much of central and southern Vietnam, northern Borneo (Sabah, Brunei) and Palawan. Finally, we note that the South China Sea is fringed by a necklace of other thick offshore clastic sediment accumulations, most notably on the southern China continental margin, offshore southern Taiwan, and offshore central Vietnam. Submarine landslides are a ubiquitous geohazard in the marine environment and occur at multiple scales. Increasing efforts have been made during the last decade to catalogue and categorise submarine landslides in comprehensive databases, aiming to better understand their preconditioning and trigger factors. Using the recently compiled, open-access MAGICLAND dataset, we investigate the distribution and morphometric trends of submarine landslides observed in seven distinct geomorphologic domains offshore west and southwest Iberia. Higher densities of submarine landslides occur on the proximal regions of the south and southwestern margins of the study area. These regions are located adjacent to or coincident with higher density areas and clusters of earthquake epicentres. Submarine canyons are another major location for collapses which are particularly abundant at canyon mouths. However, significant numbers occur within all domains with pronounced relief, including distal regions hundreds of kilometres away from the foot of the continental slope. Landslide size range is inversely proportional to their spacing and frequency, a tendency observed within each domain on the whole study area. Positive correlations were obtained between the parameters analysed, but relationships between unidimensional parameters such as length and width exhibit lower correlation coefficients. Correlations between 2D and 3D parameters such as area and volume are stronger, supporting similar findings by other studies. The relationships obtained are, however, variable across domains, and the correlation values are influenced by the seafloor geomorphology. This work brings new insights on submarine landslide distribution in the understudied west and southwest Iberian continental margin, complements previous inventories made for nearby regions, and provides valuable data with wider applications for submarine landslide databases. Tropical marginal seas host important sedimentary archives that may be exploited to reveal past changes in continental erosion, chemical weathering, and ocean dynamics. However, these records can be challenging to interpret due to the complex interactions between climate and particulate transport across ocean margins. For the southern South China Sea over the last 90 Kyr, we observe a contrasting temporal relationship between the deposition of clay minerals and magnetic minerals, which were associated with two different hydrodynamic modes. Fine‐grained clay minerals can be carried in suspension by ocean currents, leading to a rapid response to regional climate‐driven inputs. In contrast, changes in magnetic mineralogy were linked to glacial‐interglacial sea level variability, from which we infer a control by bedload transport and resuspension. Overall, this study indicates that the transfer pathways and mechanisms imparted by varying hydrodynamic conditions exert a substantial influence on the distribution of terrigenous material in continental margin sediments. This depositional framework must be considered when interpreting the timing of changes in weathering and erosion proxies hosted in sediment records from marginal seas. Specifically, fine‐grained clay minerals may reveal a rapid response to continental weathering changes, whereas the magnetic records are influenced by the transport of denser coarser‐grained minerals under the influence of sea level change. Approximately 11 400 h of acoustic recordings from two sites off the Oregon coast have been evaluated to characterize and model the frequency and wind dependence of wind noise in the northeast Pacific continental margin. Acoustic data are provided by two bottom-mounted broadband hydrophones (64 kHz sampling frequency) deployed at depths of 81 and 581 m at the continental shelf and slope, respectively. To describe the spectral level versus frequency relation, separate linear models for the 0.2–3 kHz and 3–25 kHz frequency range are fitted to the data. While spectral slopes for the 0.2–3 kHz range generally decrease with increasing wind speed, slopes remain constant (shallow location) or increase with increasing wind speed (deep location) above 3 kHz. The latter is in strong contrast to results from previous studies. The relation between spectral level and wind speed is described by a piecewise linear model where spectral levels are approximately constant below a critical wind speed v c and increase linearly with logarithmic wind speed above v c . A Bottom Simulating Reflection (BSR) has been identified using 3D seismic data from the Cameroon continental slope margin. The BSR covers an area of c. 350 km2 in water depths ranging between 940 m to 1,750 m across an area characterized by high- and low-gradient slopes, gullies, scours, and fans. The thickness of the Gas Hydrate Stability Zone (GHSZ) is ~100 - 250 m, assuming an average velocity of 1,800 m/s. Pockmarks are intensively developed across the slope and most of them are observed in the BSR area. Geothermal estimation is based on hydrate stability conditions for pure methane - seawater system, hydrostatic pressure model, and a range of P-wave velocity models for the GHSZ, ranging from 1,600 -1,800 to 2,000 - 2,200 m/s. Geothermal gradient is calculated showing the range and distribution of thermal gradients in the BSR area from 0.046 oC/m to 0.094 oC/m with assumed GHSZ velocity of 1,800 m/s. Thermal gradient anomalies have been observed in association with gullies, vertically stacked channels and in some individual pockmarks. The highest anomalies of 0.08 oC/m - 0.094 oC/m are found in the depression areas of pockmark trains, within seafloor gullies. The northern margin of the South China Sea (SCS) is often regarded as a magmapoor passive continental margin. Magmatic activities occurred after the cessation of seafloor spreading were founded mainly over the Continent-Ocean Transition (COT) zone. Intrusive rocks are observed in the Luzon-Ryukyu Transform Plate Boundary (LRTPB) dividing Southwest Taiwan Basin (SWTB) and Pearl River Mouth Basin (PRMB) north of the COT and their evolution mechanisms are not very well-studied. Here, detailed structural and geophysical features of a large-scale anomaly (LSA) is revealed from high-resolution multi-channel seismic (MCS) profiles over the LRTPB dividing the SWTB and the PRMB. After velocity estimation, AVO analysis, and geological interpretation for the LSA, we suggest that the LSA is an intrusive igneous rock and further classified as a laccolith. The coexistence of the laccolith and surrounding sills over the LRTPB shows that the north limit of magmatism is further north than the COT zone. The elongated shape of the laccolith is accordant to the NW directional LRTPB, indicating that magmatic activities of study region maybe controlled by the faulting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large scale studies of underwater noise during rain are important for assessing the ocean environment and enabling remote sensing of rain rates over the open ocean. In this study, approximately 3.5 yrs of acoustical and meteorological data recorded at the northeast Pacific continental margin are evaluated. The acoustic data are recorded at a sampling rate of 64 kHz and depths of 81 and 581 m at the continental shelf and slope, respectively. Rain rates and wind speeds are provided by surface buoys located in the vicinity of each hydrophone. Average power spectra have been computed for different rain rates and wind speeds, and linear and nonlinear regression have been performed. The main findings are (1) the linear regression slopes highly depends on the frequency range, rain rate, wind speed, and measurement depth; (2) noise levels during rain between 200 Hz and 10 kHz significantly increase with increasing wind speed; and (3) the highest correlation between the spectral level and rain rate occurs at 13 kHz, thus, coinciding with the spectral peak due to small raindrops. The results of this study indicate that previously proposed algorithms for estimating rain rates from acoustic data are not universally applicable but rather have to be adapted for different locations. Gas hydrates from the continental margin settings are mostly confined to continental slopes. The free gas occurring below the gas hydrate laden sediments play a crucial role in the submarine slope failures and can potentially trigger the submarine landslides. The present study is carried out to investigate such a scenario in the shale dominated Krishna–Godavari (KG) basin having proven gas hydrate deposits. Shale reservoirs are less permeable compared to sandstone reservoirs and as such, the free gas that is locked in the pore spaces of shales would eventually create hydro fractures or faults to escape from the pore spaces. This overpressure from the gas zone will find a pathway to reach the shallower depths. In the present study, two faults are identified of which, one is acting as a potential pathway for overpressures to travel through it, while the other is found to be critically pressurized due to the gas zone below it. The calculated gas column height is ~51 m and any further increase in the gas column height would create a fault slip and cause the mechanical failure of the sediments, creating another potential pathway. We infer that these faults are acting as a migration pathway in our study area and the advection of fluid/gas from the gas zone via the pathway might have played a major role in creating a slope break above the fault. Mesoscale eddy mixing profoundly modulates the ocean tracer budgets, and is typically parameterized via the isopycnal eddy diffusivity in ocean climate models. However, relatively little is known about the magnitude/structure of isopycnal eddy diffusivity across continental slopes, which hinders the understanding and prediction of shelf‐open ocean exchanges. In this study, we quantify the isopycnal eddy diffusivity in a suite of eddy‐resolving, process‐oriented simulations of mesoscale turbulence over continental slopes under upwelling‐favorable winds, a configuration that commonly arises around the margins of subtropical gyres. Cross‐shore eddy diffusivity is found to be suppressed in the upper open ocean occupied by strong alongshore flows, but enhanced at depths where alongshore flows are weakened, a finding that is consistent with the enhancement of eddy mixing near the steering level. Over continental slopes, eddy diffusivity also strengthens at mid‐depths, but almost vanishes near the seafloor. To theoretically constrain the simulated eddy fluxes, we examine the scaling of eddy diffusivity proposed by Ferrari and Nikurashin (2010, https://doi.org/10.1175/2010JPO4278.1), which accounts for the suppression of eddy mixing induced by the relative propagation of eddies to the mean flow. We show that, apart from the mean‐flow suppression effect, the eddy anisotropy effect induced by steep topography shapes both the horizontal and vertical structures of cross‐shore eddy diffusivity. Finally, we propose prospective closures of the eddy propagation speed and eddy anisotropy effect over continental slopes using the large‐scale flow and bathymetric quantities. This work offers a basis upon which a "slope‐aware" parameterization of mesoscale eddy mixing can be developed. Across continental margins, turbulent eddies drive the exchanges between shelf seas and open ocean, which modulate the coastal water properties and sea level, upon which human habitation depends the most. Understanding the impact of eddies on shelf‐ocean exchanges in a changing climate is therefore critical, and would typically rely on predictive ocean climate models. However, owing to limited computer powers, even state‐of‐the‐art ocean climate models must adopt a grid spacing that is too coarse to resolve turbulent eddies across continental margins. Instead, these models rely on parameterization schemes that infer eddy effects from the large‐scale, explicitly resolved flow properties. This work investigated the utility of a parameterization developed based on open ocean turbulent properties in quantifying eddy tracer fluxes across continental margins, following which further refinements of the parameterization have been made. Our results show that, apart from previously considered ingredients, the tendency of steep topography across continental margins to "squeeze" the eddy shapes must be incorporated into this parameterization. There remains a limited understanding of the controls of pre-existing structures on the architecture of deep-water progradational sequences. In the Northern Taranaki Basin (NTB), New Zealand, Pliocene post-extensional sedimentary sequences overlie Miocene back-arc volcaniclastic units. We utilize seismic reflection datasets to investigate the relationships between the buried back-arc mound-shaped structures, and the spatio-temporal changes in clinoform architecture and the associated progradational system elements within the overlying continental slope margin sequences. Our results reveal the following: (a) buried mound-shaped structures in the northern domain of the study area, overlain by younging progression of shelf-to-basin prograding clinoforms; (b) folding of the deeper clinoforms that systematically decrease in magnitude with shallowing depth from the top of the seamounts; (c) overall, the N-S-trending continental slope margin evolves from a highly curvilinear/angular trend in the deeper clinoforms (Units 1 and 2) into a rectilinear geometry within the shallower post-extensional intervals (Unit 3 and shallower); (d) Units 1 and 2 characterized by dominance of stacked offlap breaks and over-steepened (7-10°) clinoform foreset slopes in the northern domain, and dominance of gently dipping foreset slopes (<6°) in the south; (e) Unit 3 shows very low (<5°) and intermediate (5-7°) foreset slopes across the entire survey; (f) in the northern domain, differential loading by prograding sequences about the buried seamounts and horst-graben structures induced a differential compaction of the deeper units, which influenced a temporal pinning of the prograding slope margin in pre-Unit 2 times and (g) wide, closely spaced channel incision into over-steepened slopes dominate the deeper prograding sequence in the northern domain, whereas narrower, straighter channels dominate the south. We show that the buried pre-existing structures constitute rigid buttresses that modulated the syn-depositional topography and post-depositional architecture of the prograding sequences in the NTB. Living (rose Bengal stained) benthic foraminiferal faunas, grain size, geochemical parameters (total organic matter, chlorophyll-a, pheophytin-a, molecular markers, and vertical flux of particulate organic matter) were investigated in 14 stations in two submarine canyons Almirante Câmara and Grussaí considered mature and immature, respectively, and on the adjacent continental slope, from 400 to 1300 m water depth, in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Samples were retrieved during two campaigns, in the austral winter 2008 and the austral summer 2009. The density, richness, and species composition of the benthic foraminiferal fauna decrease with depth in the canyons and along the adjacent slope transects, reflecting the availability and quality of sedimentary organic matter. Both canyons act as traps of labile organic matter, mainly towards the head of the Almirante Câmara canyon, promoting high specimen density, species richness, and the occurrence of species indicative of pulses of phytodetritus (e.g., Bolivina pacifica , Nonionella opima , and Nonionella stella). Towards the deeper regions of Almirante Câmara canyon and in the adjacent slope area, the lower abundance, diversity, and richness reflect more oligotrophic conditions and an adverse environment in terms of easily metabolizable organic matter. The Brazilian Continental Margin (BEM) deep-water regions contain important geological features, although the area is poorly explored beyond the continental shelf-break. The main objective of this study is to seismically characterize syn- and post-rift sequences and certain seamounts that are part of the Fernando de Noronha Ridge (FNR) in deep-water basins and are off of the shore of northeastern Brazil. We used 2D post-stack high-resolution seismic sections to distinguish syn-rift, post-rift, and drift tectono-depositional phases. Three seismic horizons (R1 to R3) could represent, respectively, the following: an acoustic basement top, a rift top, and a highstand system tract (drift). The syn-rift stage is marked by discontinuous parallel reflectors with low amplitude and low frequency, which are offset by normal faults in half-grabens. The post-rift and drift stages are characterized by continuous parallel reflectors with low to high amplitude and frequency. Chaotic seismic reflections within the seamounts indicate their volcanic origins. Volcanic intrusions affected syn-rift, post-rift, and drift sequences and partially confine the deep-water basin deposition. The magmatic event occurred once the preexistent material and the sediment deposited after the seamount rises were partially confined by the continental slope and the seamounts. Seismic stratigraphy interpretation and its correlation with volcanic activities indicate a relative chronological control relating the emplacement of the seamounts to the Early Eocene to Late Miocene. Volcanic episodes seem to have created volcanoclastic deposits marked by a disorganized/chaotic seismic pattern with few continuous reflectors, indicating interbedded magma flows with sedimentary material. Although seismic activity in Brazil is low to moderate, some earthquakes with damage potential occurred in the past. Engineering structures located along the coast and those installed in deep waters need to comply with safety requirements. In addition, there is a need to address the public interest regarding the effects of seismically-induced landslides. Therefore, a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment was carried out for the offshore south/southeast regions of Brazil, in order to estimate potential levels of ground motion. A historical and recent instrumental seismicity catalog for this region has been compiled. A stochastic attenuation relation with different seismic source models and recurrence parameters was used in a hazard analysis with the CRISIS 2012 software. To capture the epistemic and aleatoric uncertainties in the hazard calculations, a logic tree approach was adopted, considering different seismic zone models, seismic activity parameters, and scaling factors in the Ground Motion Prediction Equation. It was verified that the Peak Ground Accelerations are mostly less than 2.0% g in the continental portion of the region (for 10% exceedance probability in 50 years). At a particular point of interest located offshore in the continental slope of the study area, the seismic hazard is also low, with the maximum acceleration for the probability of exceedance of 10% and 2% in 50 years reaching mean values of 3.2% and 19.1% g, respectively, for very hard rock conditions. The landward wall of the New Britain Trench (NBT) is an active continental margin. Unlike passive margins, it lacks a continental rise and the abyssal plain, and has a steep continental slope ending in an oceanic trench. Although the trench systems are receiving more and more attentions, our understanding of the microbiology of the NBT and its trench walls is limited. In this study, we collected a 70 cm gravity core (4524 m depth) and a 30 cm box core (4130 m depth) from the western and eastern landward walls of the NBT, respectively. Diversity and composition of microbial communities were investigated at high resolution in 2 cm depth intervals. In two cores, obvious vertical transitions from the aerobic to anaerobic but distinct dominant anaerobic microbes were observed. In the eastern trench wall, anaerobic fermenters, such as Anaerolineales and Alphaproteobacteria, were dominant, but the western contained abundant Dehalococcoidia, and Gammaproteobacteria, such as Alteromonadales and Oceanospirillales. Combined with the results of higher bacteria abundance and probable shallower aerobic active zone in the eastern core, such patterns of species composition might be related with richer input of labile allochthonous terrestrial organic matter by mass wasting processes in the steeper eastern wall. Our analysis also revealed highly diversified Dehalococcoidia including some new phylotypes, extending the current understandings on Dehalococcoidia diversity. This study fills the gap of benthic microbial study in the NBT, and highlights the need of multi-point sampling in trench studies for the great geographical variations along the trench wall. Activities by coastal States in relation to the exploration and exploitation of non-living natural resources (namely hydrocarbons and deep-sea minerals) on the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles (M) from their territorial sea baselines are reviewed. Geological conditions dictate such that hydrocarbons are likely to occur where there are thick accumulations of sediments (at least 2-3 km is needed for organic matter to generate significant amounts of hydrocarbons), whereas deep-sea minerals are found on or beneath the seabed of the deep oceans, which are generally "starved" of sediment. Thus, in general, sites for hydrocarbon exploration and for deep-sea mineral exploration are unlikely to overlap. On a 'normal' geological shelf with an average width of say -60-100 km, hydrocarbon exploration is carried out generally within the 200 M limit of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the coastal State. Within the last decade, however, necessitated by depleting resources in the shallow waters of the shelf and slope, exploration has gradually moved from the geological shelf (water depth typically < 200 m) further out into deeper waters, and in some cases, beyond the 200 M limit. Thus far, only in a few places is oil and gas exploration being carried out on the continental shelf beyond 200 M. Examples include Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Argentina and Canada. Such activities mainly involve geological and geophysical investigations and assessment of the hydrocarbon potential, while some have resulted in commercial production. Besides the conventional hydrocarbons (oil and gas), continental margin sediments may also host significant accumulations of gas hydrates, which are regarded as a potentially important energy resource of the future. Along nonpolar continental margins, gas hydrates are generally found beneath the continental slope and the continental rise, i.e. beyond the continental shelf proper, in water depths typically greater than 500 m but still mainly within 200 M of the territorial sea baselines. Where the continental margin is exceptionally wide, however, gas hydrates may occur in areas beyond the 200 M limit, on the extended continental shelf. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both the shelf-edge trajectories and slope morphology are indicative of deep-water sedimentation, but previous studies are relatively independent from each other in the two dimensions. An integrated investigation can enhance the understanding of deep-water sedimentary systems and enrich reservoir prediction methods. Based on the bathymetry data and seismic data published, this study identified ten slope areas at the continental margin of East Africa and classified the clinoforms into three types: concave-up, sigmoidal and planar. Combined with the distribution of main modern rivers in East Africa, nine modern source-to-sink systems were identified and the catchment area is positively correlated with the size of the shelf-edge delta. It is found that the slope morphology of East Africa is closely related to the geological setting, sediment supply and sediment transport pathway in submarine canyon of passive continental margin. When the sediment supply is stable, the concave-up slopes are dominated by the river-associated and shelf-incising canyons and the sigmoidal slopes are determined by the headless canyons. There exists a strong coupling relationship between the shelf-edge trajectories and slope morphology. In general, concave-up slopes correspond to descending trend, flat and low-angle ascending trend shelf-edge trajectories and high-quality reservoirs developed on the basin floor under the influence of river-associated and shelf-incising canyons which have bright prospects for oil and gas exploration. Additionally, sigmoidal slopes usually correspond to descending trend, flat and low-angle ascending trend shelf-edge trajectories at times of relative sea-level fall and the reservoirs mostly developed on the upper slope under the influence of headless canyons. Moreover, the planar slopes correspond to high-angle ascending trend trajectories which are hardly potential for exploration. This study focuses on gas bubble emissions across ~ 1800 km2 of the southeastern continental slope of the Crimean Peninsula in the Eastern Black Sea basin. In total, about 3500 gas emissions were mapped as so-called flares in single- and multibeam echosounder imaginary. Flares generally emanate from the seafloor, with a few exceptions, where water depths are less than 700 m, which represents the upper limit of the gas hydrate stability zone in this region. Methane in shallow sediments below 700 m is transferred to methane hydrate, and the migration of free gas into the water column is therefore inhibited in most cases. This study illustrates further that flare occurrence is linked to morpho-structural margin characteristics. Two morphologically different margin segments are distinguished, and flare distributions were found to relate to differing morphological structures along these segments. In the western province, where the upper continental margin is steep and incised by gullies, flares occur mainly along downslope-oriented ridge crests. In the eastern province, representing a part of the Don-Kuban paleo-fan, the slope is influenced by extensive mass wasting. Gas emissions in this area were mainly detected aligned along scarps of submarine landslides and related to sediment failures. Almost all flares disappear in the acoustic records of the water column below a water depth of ~ 100 m suggesting that the gas bubbles dissolve within the water body of the Black Sea and contribute to its methane inventory and the anoxic water column. Well‐exposed, vertically dipping, glacially polished outcrops of the Neoproterozoic Windermere Supergroup in the southern Canadian Cordillera include basin‐floor deposits of the Upper Kaza Group overlain by slope channel complexes of the Isaac Formation. Within the 2·5 km thick Kaza and Isaac succession is an up to 360 m thick interval composed of diverse deep‐water stratal elements including scour and interscour deposits, distributary channels, fine‐grained turbidites, terminal splays, mass‐transport deposits, erosional and levéed channels and avulsion splays, which collectively were formed during the development of an ancient passive‐margin channel‐lobe system. The proportion and vertical and lateral arrangement of stratal elements reveal three distinct complexes. The lower complex, consisting mostly of distributary channels and small and large scours, is interpreted to represent the detachment of lobes from an upflow levéed channel, wherein a well‐developed channel‐lobe transition zone was formed by efficient, siliciclastic flows during a period of sustained transport bypass and limited deposition coincident with the onset of falling relative sea level. The middle, comparatively thicker and more sandstone‐rich complex, comprises distributary channel fills, fine‐grained turbidites and lesser terminal splays that are interspersed with small scours, capped by a slope levéed channel filled with coarser‐grained siliciclastic sediment. The abundance of basin‐floor elements suggests negligible separation between the levéed channel and lobe, and therefore a poorly‐developed channel‐lobe transition zone, resulting from inefficient, siliciclastic‐rich depositional flows that became dominant during lowstand and/or ensuing transgression. The stratal makeup of the upper complex resembles the lower detached complex, suggesting a return to efficient flows, and an abrupt change to mixed carbonate–siliciclastic sediments associated with highstand conditions. Accordingly, the stratigraphic architecture and stacking pattern of the Kaza–Isaac interval, which relate to the formation of multiple channel‐lobe transition zones, were controlled by temporal changes in sediment supply and flow characteristics during the long‐term progradation of the Laurentian continental margin.
