The continental crust of Iran is dominated by abundant calc-alkaline and alkaline plutonic and volcanic rocks and by rifted basins filled with mostly terrigenous sedimentary rocks that formed at a Late Ediacaran to Cambrian extensional convergent plate margin along the northern margin of Gondwana. Here we present new zircon U–Pb age, geochemical, and isotopic data from plutonic (granite-granodiorite) and metamorphic (gneiss) rocks in the Kariznou region of NE Iran to provide insights into the nature of the Cadomian convergent margin of Iran. Geochemical data indicate calc-alkaline signatures, characterized by strong depletions in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti and arc-like trace element patterns. New zircon U–Pb ages show that calc-alkaline granitoids and granitic gneiss formed at ~564 to 537 Ma and 538 Ma, respectively. Bulk rock Sr-Nd isotopic data of calc-alkaline rocks have εNd(t) = –5.42 to −5.53 and −6.93 to −7.43 for granite and gneiss, respectively. The gneisses show stronger interaction with and/or re-melting of older continental crust than do granitic rocks. We interpret Kariznou magmatic rocks as forming in association with strong extension accompanied by crustal assimilation. Extension initiated ~570 Ma with the deposition of Late Ediacaran sediments, and magmatism began at 545–535 Ma, generating calc-alkaline magmas. The tectonomagmatic evolution of the Kariznou region encapsulates the prolonged transition of Cadomian Iran from a strongly extensional convergent margin, possibly as a result of oblique oceanic subduction and slab roll-back of the subducting Proto-Tethys oceanic lithosphere, culminating in the formation of an Early Palaeozoic passive margin on the northern side of Gondwana. Broadly similar Early to Middle Jurassic stratigraphic sequences including bimodal igneous rocks of the Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone of Iran and the Sakarya Zone of Turkey suggest that these formed in a common tectonic setting in an extensional basin that evolved from a terrestrial magmatic rift to a marine shelf and passive continental margin. Whole‐rock chemistry and Sr–Nd isotope signatures indicate derivation of mafic melts from partial melting of the subcontinental lithosphere. Decompression associated with extension led to 5%–30% partial melting of spinel–garnet lherzolite with minor involvement of continental crust, producing tholeiitic to transitional basaltic magma. Extensional basins inverted during the Mid‐Late Jurassic. The compositional similarity between high‐Mg andesite‐dacite from accretionary orogens and bulk continental crust (CC) provides an opportunity to unravel the CC formation paradox. Compositional data from a global compilation of Quaternary magmatic arcs indicate the presence of low‐Mg series (LMS) and high‐Mg series (HMS). The LMS show trends of crystal fractionation and can be subdivided into high Ba/Th and high La/Sm groups, which likely originate from fluid‐ and sediment melt‐modified mantle wedge, respectively. In contrast, the HMS have variably mixed compositions (e.g., high Mg#, Ba/Th, and La/Sm) and can be explained by partial melting of mélange diapirs rising into the mantle wedge, which are mixtures of subducted sediment, eroded arc crust or CC, buoyant oceanic crust, and peridotite. We, therefore, propose a two‐step process for creating CC involving extraction of LMS from the mantle followed by re‐melting of recycled LMS in the mantle to generate HMS and thus CC. Plain Language Summary: Continental crust (CC) is extracted from the mantle primarily by subduction‐related magmatism in accretionary orogens. However, igneous rocks sourced from the mantle have low SiO2 (basalt), whereas average CC has high SiO2 (andesite) and high MgO. To resolve this paradox, we analyzed Quaternary subduction‐related igneous rocks worldwide and find that they can be divided into low‐Mg series (LMS) and high‐Mg series (HMS). We compare existing compositional data for LMS and HMS and find that LMS are dominated by basalt whereas HMS are dominated by andesite and similar to the average CC. Petrogenetic analyses reveal that LMS likely originate from the mantle and represent primitive CC, whereas HMS likely originate from recycled crustal materials in the mantle and represent mature CC. We propose a two‐step process for creating CC, involving extraction of LMS from the mantle followed by re‐melting of recycled LMS to generate HMS and thus CC. Deposits of semi-gemstones tourmaline, beryl, and garnet associated with Jurassic granites are found in the northern Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone (SaSZ) of western Iran, defining a belt that can be traced for about 400 km. Granitic magmas strongly interacted with or were derived from melts of continental crust and/or sediments. Based on morphologies, size, mineral assemblage, and contact relationships with host granite and associated metamorphic aureoles, these deposits are categorized into six types: (1) garnet in skarns, (2) tourmaline, beryl, and garnet in pegmatite and aplitic dikes, (3) disseminations and patches of tourmaline in leucogranites, (4) quartz-tourmaline veins in granite, (5) tourmaline and garnet in metamorphic aureoles, and (6) tourmaline orbicules in aplite. Tourmalines are mostly schorl and dravite, and garnets are mostly almandine, spessartine, and grossular. Tourmaline, beryl, and garnet from pegmatites in the contact aureole of Jurassic granites reflect segregations of Be, B, Mn, and Al bearing melts from the Jurassic peraluminous granites. Quartz-tourmaline veins and hydrothermal garnets in skarns reflect fluids exsolved from the surrounding metasediment and pegmatite melt. In contrast, tourmaline patches and orbicules developed from boron-rich aqueous fluids exsolved from cooling granitic magma. Distribution of semi-gemstones in the SaSZ shows that these are mostly related to pegmatites associated with Jurassic granitic intrusions. Mineral equilibrium considerations indicate that SaSZ semi-gemstones crystallized at P = 3.5–7.5 kbar (11.5–25 km deep) and temperatures of 550–650°C. SaSZ pegmatites fall in the muscovite (MS) and MS-rare element classes. They are Lithium Cesium Tantalum (LCT)-type pegmatites. Fluids responsible for gem mineralization were exsolved from cooling granite bodies and released by metamorphosed sediments. Iran is a remarkable geoscientific laboratory where the full range of processes that form and modify the continental crust can be studied. Iran's crustal nucleus formed as a magmatic arc above an S-dipping subduction zone on the northern margin of Gondwana 600–500 Ma. This nucleus rifted and drifted north to be accreted to SW Eurasia ∼250 Ma. A new, N-dipping subduction zone formed ∼100 Ma along ∼3,000 km of the SW Eurasian margin, including Iran's southern flank; this is when most of Iran's many ophiolites formed. Iran evolved as an extensional continental arc in Paleogene time (66–23 Ma) and began colliding with Arabia ∼25 Ma. Today, Iran is an example of a convergent plate margin in the early stages of continent-continent collision, with a waning magmatic arc behind (north of) a large and growing accretionary prism, the Zagros Fold-and-Thrust Belt. Iran's crustal evolution resulted in both significant economic resources and earthquake hazards. Iran is a natural laboratory for studying how convergent plate margins form, evolve, and behave during the early stages of continental collision. Iran formed in the past 600 million years, originating on the northern flank of Gondwana, rifting away, and accreting to SW Eurasia. Iran is actively deforming as a result of collision with the Arabian plate, but earthquakes do not outline the position of the subducting slab. China covers approximately 10 million km 2 and its crust has a complicated evolution of amalgamation, igneous activity, and sedimentation. Many studies address various aspects of China's crust, but few provide a simple geological and geophysical overview that is accessible to students and non-specialists; Filling this void is the objective of this review. China is characterized by thick (40–75 km) crust in the west due to Cenozoic collision with India and thin (30–40 km thick) crust in the east due to E–W Mesozoic-Cenozoic backarc extension. In contrast, overall crustal fabric trends E–W, defined by ophiolite belts and ultra-high pressure metamorphic rocks. This crustal fabric indicates that China has grown like a sandwich, with crust progressively added through Phanerozoic time by closing various E–W oriented Tethys oceans and seaways. In map view, China consists of five E–W trending tiers. Tier 1 is defined by the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) along the northern margin of China, which consists of the Xing'an-Mongolia orogenic belt in the NE and the Tianshan Orogen in the NW. The CAOB formed during ~1000 Ma to ~250 Ma and is an accretionary orogen of mostly Paleozoic age that formed through closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and collision between the Siberian Craton and Archean-Paleoproterozoic crust to the south, which constitutes Tier 2. The CAOB has a strong aeromagnetic signature. Sediments from the Amur River show detrital U-Pb zircon age peaks at 2.8–2.3 Ga, 1.8 Ga, 450–250 Ma, and 200–100 Ma, which is expected for erosion of the Xing'an-Mongolia belt. Tier 1 igneous rocks are mainly Paleozoic except in the NE (Xing'an-Mongolia orogenic belt) and reflect subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and associated accretion events, whereas Paleozoic CAOB crust in the east is overprinted by Jurassic and Cretaceous igneous rocks related to subduction of ancient Pacific basin oceanic lithosphere. Tier 2 includes the North China Craton (NCC) to the east and Tarim Craton to the west. The NCC contains the oldest rocks in China and is dominated by Archean and Paleoproterozoic ages. The extent of Archean rocks in the NCC may have been overestimated, as suggested by detrital zircons from the Yellow River, which flows across the craton, showing age peaks at 2.5–2.2 Ga, ~1.9 Ga, 500–400 Ma, and 300–200 Ma. The Tarim Craton is dominated by Palaeoproterozoic- Mesoproterozoic metamorphic strata along with a significant proportion of Neoproterozoic (~0.8 Ga) rocks. U-Pb ages for detrital zircons from Tarim River sediments reflect this basement geology, with strong peaks of Early and Late Paleozoic age, less abundant Neoproterozoic ages, and scattered ages back to the Archean. The NCC also was affected by abundant Mesozoic igneous activity with voluminous Early Cretaceous rocks that are associated with lithospheric thinning and decratonization. Tier 3 – also known as the Central China Orogen - is composed of the Sulu-Dabie-Qinling-Kunlun Orogen and records closing of an arm of Prototethys during the Ordovician to Silurian and Paleotethys during the Triassic. Tier 3 contains one of Earth's three giant ultra-high pressure (UHP) terranes with well-documented peak metamorphism of 650–850 °C and 4 GPa, indicating that some of these rocks were deeply subducted and then exhumed from depths of over 120 km in Triassic time. Tier 3 magmatism occurred in two episodes, early-middle Paleozoic and Triassic. Tier 4 contains blocks rifted from Gondwana, which include the Songpan-Ganzi, Qiangtang, and Lhasa terranes of Tibet in the west and the South China Block in the east. These terranes are marked by broad magnetic anomalies with a NE-SW trend along the Pacific margin, and a broad N–S trending anomaly between Tibet and South China. The South China Block is made up of Proterozoic and minor Archean crust of the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks, which collided at 1.0–0.8 Ga to form the Jiangnan Orogen and the South China Block. Age spectra for detrital zircons from the Yangtze and Pearl Rivers shows major peaks at ~1.8 Ga, 900–800 Ma, ~400 Ma, and 300–150 Ma, which is consistent with the age of South China Block crust. Early-Middle Paleozoic igneous rocks are also found in South China. Mesozoic igneous rocks are widespread in both South China and Tibet and are related to subduction of the Paleo-Pacific and Tethyan oceanic plates, respectively. The accretion of Tibetan terranes to southern Eurasia occurred in the Mesozoic before collision with India at ~55 Ma. Tier 5 is represented by the island of Taiwan on the SE margin of China and marks where China crust continues to grow. Whether or not magmatic arcs evolve compositionally with time and the processes responsible remain controversial. Resolution of this question requires the reconstruction of arc geochemical evolution at the level of a discrete arc system. Here, we address this problem using the well-studied Central American Volcanic Arc System (CAVAS) as an example. Geochemical and isotopic data were compiled for 1031 samples of lavas and intrusive rocks from the ~1100 km-long segment of oceanic CAVAS (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua) built on thickened oceanic crust over its 75 million year lifespan. We used available age constraints to subdivide this data set into six magmatic phases: 75–39 Ma (Phase I or PI); 35–16 Ma (PII); 16–6 Ma (PIII); 6–3 Ma (PIV); 5.9–0.01 Ma (PVa arc alkaline and PVb adakitic); and 2.6–0 Ma (PVI, Quaternary to modern magmatism, predominantly ≪ 1 Ma). To correct for magmatic fractionation, selected major and trace element abundances were linearly regressed to 55 wt.% SiO2. The most striking observation is the overall evolution of the CAVAS to more incompatible element enriched and ultimately continental-like compositions with time, although magmatic evolution took on a more regional character in the youngest rocks, with magmatic rocks of Nicaragua becoming increasingly distinguishable from those of Costa Rica and Panama with time. Models entailing progressive arc magmatic enrichment are generally supported by the CAVAS record. Progressive enrichment of the oceanic CAVAS with time reflects changes in mantle wedge composition and decreased melting due to arc crust thickening, which was kick-started by the involvement of enriched plume mantle in the formation of the CAVAS. Progressive crustal thickening and associated changes in the sub-arc thermal regime resulted in decreasing degrees of partial melting over time, which allowed for progressive enrichment of the CAVAS and ultimately the production of continental-like crust in Panama and Costa Rica by ~16–10 Ma. Abstract: The Arabian Plate originated ∼25Ma ago by rifting of NE Africa to form the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea. It is one of the smaller and younger of the Earth''s lithospheric plates. The upper part of its crust consists of crystalline Precambrian basement, Phanerozoic sedimentary cover as much as 10km thick, and Cenozoic flood basalt (harrat). The distribution of these rocks and variations in elevation across the Plate cause a pronounced geologic and topographic asymmetry, with extensive basement exposures (the Arabian Shield) and elevations of as much as 3000m in the west, and a Phanerozoic succession (Arabian Platform) that thickens, and a surface that descends to sea level, eastward between the Shield and the northeastern margin of the Plate. This tilt in the Plate is partly the result of marginal uplift during rifting in the south and west, and loading during collision with, and subduction beneath, the Eurasian Plate in the northeast. But a variety of evidence suggests that the asymmetry also reflects a fundamental crustal and mantle heterogeneity in the Plate that dates from Neoproterozoic time when the crust formed. The bulk of the Plate''s upper crystalline crust is Neoproterozoic in age (1000–540Ma) reflecting, in the west, a 300-million year process of continental crustal growth between ∼850 and 550Ma represented by amalgamated juvenile magmatic arcs, post-amalgamation sedimentary and volcanic basins, and granitoid intrusions that make up as much as 50% of the Shield''s surface. Locally, Archean and Paleoproterozoic rocks are structurally intercalated with the juvenile Neoproterozoic rocks in the southern and eastern parts of the Shield. The geologic dataset for the age, composition, and origin of the upper crust of the Plate in the east is smaller than the database for the Shield, and conclusions made about the crust in the east are correspondingly less definitive. In the absence of exposures, furthermore, nothing is known by direct observation about the composition of the crust north of the Shield. Nonetheless, available data indicate a geologic history for eastern Arabian crust different to that in the west. The Neoproterozic crust (∼815–785Ma) is somewhat older than in the bulk of the Arabian Shield, and igneous and metamorphic activity was largely finished by 750Ma. Thereafter, the eastern part of the Plate became the site of virtually continuous sedimentation from 725Ma on and into the Phanerozoic. This implies that a relatively strong lithosphere was in place beneath eastern Arabia by 700Ma in contrast to a lithospheric instability that persisted to ∼550Ma in the west. Lithospheric differentiation is further indicated by the Phanerozoic depositional history with steady subsidence and accumulation of a sedimentary succession 5–14km thick in the east and a consistent high-stand and thin to no Phanerozoic accumulation over the Shield. Geophysical data likewise indicate east–west lithospheric differentiation. Overall, the crustal thickness of the Plate (depth to the Moho) is ∼40km, but there is a tendency for the crust to thicken eastward by as much as 10% from 35–40km beneath the Shield to 40–45km beneath eastern Arabia. The crust also becomes structurally more complex with as many as 5 seismically recognized layers in the east compared to 3 layers in the west. A coincident increase in velocity is noted in the upper-crust layers. Complementary changes are evidenced in some models of the Arabian Plate continental upper mantle, indicating eastward thickening of the lithospheric mantle from ∼80km beneath the Shield to ∼120km beneath the Platform, which corresponds to an overall lithospheric thickening (crust and upper mantle) from ∼120km to ∼160km eastward. The locus of these changes coincides with a prominent magnetic anomaly (Central Arabian Magnetic Anomaly, CAMA) in the extreme eastern part of the Arabian Shield that extends north across the north-central part of the Arabian Plate. The CAMA also coincides with a major structural boundary separating a region of northerly and northwesterly basement trends in the west from a region of northerly and northeasterly trends in the northeastern part of the Plate, and with the transition from high-stand buoyant Shield to subsided Platform. Its coincidence with geophysically indicated changes in the lower crust and mantle structure suggests that a fundamental lithospheric boundary is present in the central part of the Arabian Plate. The ages and isotopic characteristics of xenoliths brought to the surface in Cenozoic basalt eruptions indicate that the lower crust and upper mantle are largely juvenile Neoproterozoic additions, meaning that the lower crust and upper mantle formed about the same time as the upper crust. This implies that the lithospheric boundary in the central part of the Arabian Plate dates from Neoproterozoic time. We conclude that lithospheric differentiation across the Arabian Plate is long lived and has controlled much of the Phanerozoic sedimentary history of the Plate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The behavior of the solid Earth system is often overlooked when the causes of major Neoproteozoic (1000–542 Ma) climate and biosphere events are discussed although ∼20% of the present continental crust formed or was remobilized during this time. Processes responsible for forming and deforming the continental crust during Neoproterozoic time were similar to those of the modern Earth and took place mostly but not entirely at convergent margin settings. Crustal growth and reworking occurred within the context of a supercontinent cycle, from breakup of Rodinia beginning ∼830 Ma to formation of a new supercontinent Greater Gondwana or Pannotia, ∼600 Ma. Neoproterozoic crust formation and deformation was heterogeneous in space and time, and was concentrated in Africa, Eurasia, and South America during the last 300 million years of Neoproterozoic time. In contrast, the solid Earth system was relatively quiescent during the Tonian period (1000–850 Ma). The vigor of Cryogenian and Ediacaran tectonic and magmatic processes and the similar timing of these events and development of Neoproterozoic glaciations and metazoa suggest that climate change and perhaps increasing biological complexity was strongly affected by the solid Earth system. Late Paleocene adakitic granitoids are rare in Iran except in the northwest. We focused on the adakitic Saqqez-Takab pluton, which occupies an area of ~600 km2. New U-Pb zircon dating yield crystallization ages of 58–56 Ma (Thanetian). These granitoids comprises granite, quartz monzonite and monzogranite with granular to mylonitic textures. They have high SiO 2 abundances (59.1–78.6 wt%), high ratios of Sr/Y (50–490) and La/Yb ratios (19–237), along with high Ba (779–2466 ppm) and light rare earth element contents (e.g., La = 11–70 ppm). Saqqez-Takab granitoids have compositions that are similar to high-silica adakites, including low Mg- number (Mg# < 0.5), TiO 2 (<0.93 wt%), Cr (<38 ppm) and Ni (<55 ppm). K 2 O/Na 2 O ratios of these granitoids are high (>0.7), resembling K-rich adakitic granitoids. Initial ratios of 87Sr/86Sr and ε Nd (t) vary from 0.7044 to 0.7053 and −2.8 to +2.0 respectively. These isotopic signatures differ from those of typical subducting slab-derived adakites (O-type adakite) with high positive ε Nd (t) and from collision-related adakites (C-type adakite) with negative ε Nd (t). The geochemical and isotopic characteristics of Saqqez-Takab granitoids are most consistent with magma being produced by amphibole-dominated fractionation of hydrous melts of subcontinental lithospheric mantle accompanied by minor assimilation of lower mafic calc alkaline continental crust. Distribution of similar-ages adakites in the NW Iran and E Pontides of Turkey suggests that these melts formed similarly. Upwelling of hot asthenosphere due to Neotethys slab rollback led to partial melting of lower continental crust calc alkaline mafic rocks and/or amphibole fractionation from mafic magma produced K-rich adakitic rocks in eastern Turkey and NW Iran during the late Paleocene. • High-K adakitic granites from NW Iran have zircon U-Pb ages of 58–57 Ma. • Partial melting of subcontinental lithosphere was the source of mafic precursors. • Amphibole fractionation played the main role in generating Paleocene adakites. • These adakites were produced in continental crust of normal thickness. It is important to understand the Jurassic tectonic setting of SW Eurasia, and the igneous rocks of the Sanandaj-Sirjan zone in SW Iran provide critical evidence. Bimodal volcanic and hypabyssal rocks exposed around Songhor in the central part of the Sanandaj-Sirjan zone have zircon U-Pb crystallization ages of 156 Ma for felsic and 153 to 146 Ma for mafic rocks. Felsic volcanic and subvolcanic rocks with affinity to A-type granite have high SiO 2 (62.6 to 73.9 wt%) and total alkalis (K 2 O + Na 2 O = 5.1–9.8 wt%), low MgO (0.1–3.1 wt%) and slightly positive εNd(t) (+0.6 to +3.8) and moderate 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios (0.7041 to 0.7061). The mafic rocks (basalt and micro gabbro/dolerite) with lower contents of SiO 2 (47.0 to 54.6 wt%), high MgO (4.1 to 10.7 wt%) with variable Na 2 O (2.0–5.9 wt%) and K 2 O (0.1–2.6 wt%) can be divided into two groups based on TiO 2 contents: 1) low-Ti and 2) high-Ti. The low-Ti group has 0.14 to 0.62 wt% TiO 2 with εNd(t) = +3.2 to +5.8 and 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7032–0.7059. The high-Ti basalts have 1.4–1.6 wt% TiO 2 with εNd(t) = +1.2 to +4.2 and 87Sr/86Sr(i) =0.7039 to 0.7057. The low-Ti suite is less fractionated, with Mg# between 55 and 74 compared to 43 to 63 for the high-Ti suite. Felsic rocks may have formed by remelting of underplated mafic rocks which were derived from subcontinental lithospheric mantle along with minor assimilation of continental crust in the early stage of extension. Thinning of continental lithosphere continued with increasing partial melting to produce high-Ti mafic melts early and low-Ti mafic melts in the late stage. Similar Sr-Nd isotope ratios for the mafic and felsic rocks with an 8–10 Ma interval between these two groups hint at gradual thinning of the continental lithosphere. This is consistent with formation of transitional crust of a passive continental margin between Neo-Tethys and Iran continental crust in Jurassic time. The continental crust of NW Iran is intruded by Late Cretaceous I-type granites and gabbro-diorites as well as Paleocene A-type granites. SIMS and LA-ICPMS U-Pb analyses of zircons yield ages of 100–92 Ma (Late Cretaceous) for I-type granites and gabbro-diorites and 61–63 Ma (Paleocene) for A-type granites. Late Cretaceous gabbro-diorites (including mafic microgranular enclaves; MMEs) from NW Iran show variably evolved signatures. They show depletion in Nb and Ta on N-MORB-normalized trace-element spider-diagrams and have high Th/Yb ratios, suggesting their precursor magmas were generated in a subduction-related environment. Gabbro-diorites have variable zircon εHf(t) values of +1.2 to +8, δ18O of 6.4 to 7.4‰ and bulk rock εNd(t) of −1.4 to ~ +4.9. The geochemical and isotopic data attest to melting of subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) to generate near-primitive gabbros with radiogenic Nd isotopes (εNd(t) = ~ +4.9) and high Nb/Ta and Zr/Hf ratios, similar to mantle melts (Nb/Ta ~ 17 and Zr/Hf ~ 38). These mafic melts underwent further fractionation and mixing with crustal melts to generate Late Cretaceous evolved gabbro-diorites. Geochemical data for I-type granites indicate both Nb-Ta negative and positive anomalies along with enrichment in light REEs. These rocks are peraluminous and have variable bulk-rock εNd(t) (−1.4 to +1.3), zircon εHf(t) (+2.8 to +10.4) and δ18O (4.7–7.3‰) values, but radiogenic bulk rock Pb isotopes. The geochemical and isotopic signatures of these granites suggest interaction of mantle-derived mafic magmas (similar to near-primitive Oshnavieh gabbros) with middle-upper crust through assimilation-fractional crystallization (AFC) to produce Late Cretaceous I-type granites. Paleocene A-type granites have distinctive geochemical features compared to I-type granitoids, including enrichment in Nb-Ta, high bulk rock εNd(t) (+3.3 to +3.9) and zircon εHf(t) (+5.1 − +9.9) values. Alkaline granites are ferroan; they have low MgO, CaO, Sr, Ba and Eu concentrations and high total Fe 2 O 3 , K 2 O, Na 2 O, Al 2 O 3 , Ga, Zr, Nb-Ta, Th and rare earth element (REE) abundances and Ga/Al ratios. These rocks might be related to fractionation of a melt derived from a sub-continental lithospheric mantle, but which interacted with asthenosphere-derived melts. We suggest that subduction initiation and the resultant slab roll-back caused extreme extension in the overlying Iranian plate, induced convection in the mantle wedge and led to the decompression melting of SCLM. Rising mantle-derived magmas assimilated middle-upper crustal rocks. Fractionating mantle-derived magmas and contamination with crustal components produced evolved gabbro-diorites and I-type granites. In contrast, asthenospheric upwelling during the Paleocene provided heat for melting and interaction with SCLM to generate the precursor melts to the A-type granites. • There are Late Cretaceous granitoids and Paleocene A-type granites in NW Iran. • Different mechanisms are suggested for genesis of granitoids and A-type granites. • Subduction initiation and extension generated granitoids during the Late Cretaceous.
