125 children under the age of 12 years were patch tested over a period of 7 years. 60 (48%) of the children had I or more positive (+ve) reactions, of which 92% (55/60) were considered relevant. This article discusses medical cases related to allergic contact dermatitis from toxicodendron succedaneum. More than 140 cases of phytodermatitis were reviewed. Although in most instances toxicodendron succedaneum was considered most likely responsible, definite identification was made in only 92 patients. Younger patients presented with facial dermatitis, reflecting contact while playing under trees. Allergy to anacardiacease shrubs and trees is well recognized. Toxicodendron succedaneum causes more than 2 million cases of allergic contact dermatitis in the U.S. every year.

The article presents information on cases of allergic contact dermatitis in families. Contact dermatitis occurring simultaneously in more than one member of a family has rarely been reported. This article reports about four families in whom allergic contact dermatitis developed in more than one family member at the same time. All four cases presented with allergic contact dermatitis from Toxicodendron succedaneum. The first case is of a family were, three siblings, aged seven to nine years, were trampolining under a Rhus tree in the garden. Within two days, all three presented with periorbital oedema and streaky vesicle formation on the face, requiring systemic corticosteroids.

This article focuses on the case study of two persons, who had developed contact dermatitis to a skin adhesive spray. A 47 year-old man was admitted for bone grafting and plating of a fracture of the humerus. Steri-strips were applied to keep the skin edges opposed, and a skin adhesive spray was also used. After 3 days, the patient had developed several tense bullae along and underneath the Steri-strips. In another case a 56 year old man was admitted for arthroplasty of his right hip. Four days following the operation, he complained of pruritus at the operation site.

The role of allergic contact dermatitis in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus⁄lichenoid reactions remains under controversy. The standard European, dental, organic mercurial and food batteries were applied to 53 patients with biopsy proven, symptomatic oral lichen planus between 1983 and 1988. There were 89 positive reactions in 39 patients. The patch test reactions were thought to be relevant in 21 patients only. Thus, it was concluded that the aetiology of oral lichen planus is still unknown but contact allergy may well play a significant role in its pathogenesis.

This article reports that the value of carba-mix as a contact allergen in the European standard battery has come under question. Researchers have analysed, retrospectively, the data from 5986 patients to determine the usefulness of carba-mix as an indicator of rubber sensitivity. Had carba-mix been excluded from the standard battery, 83 cases of contact dermatitis to rubber compounds would have been missed. Only 124 patients were carba-mix positive and negative to thiuram-mix or mercapto-mix or both. Of these, 69 were male and 55 female, mean age 46 years. The site of the contact dermatitis was the hands, face, and feet with one-fifth of patients presenting with a generalized eczema.

Emulsifiers are an uncommon cause of allergic contact dermatitis.These emulsifiers are often a combination of cetyl and stearyl alcohol which are also known as cetostearyl alcohol or Lanette O. Medicament allergies in patients with chronic leg ulcers is well recognized. In the past, topical antibiotics. rubber additives and wool alcohols have been the most common reported allergens. This article presents an abstract for the paper "Allergic Contact Dermatitis Reactions to Latex Examination Gloves," by J. Garioch, P. Todd, M. Rademaker and A. Forsyth. Forty-two patients referred to the Contact Dermatitis Investigation unit for investigation of hand dermatitis were patch tested with the standard European battery and our glove battery. Of the 42 patients, 30 were medical or dental personnel whilst the remaining 12 had a miscellany of occupations, which required them to wear such gloves for protection. Eight of the medical or dental personnel reacted to one or more of the latex gloves and, of these patients, seven were also found to be rubber sensitive.
