Private home dining (PHD) is gaining popularity around the world. The PHD is an example of a sharing economy in which guests enter the homes of amateur chefs for a shared experiential meal. This paper explores the social and spatial dimensions of PHD in Singapore from the perspectives of hosts and guests. For the hosts, PHD events mean opening their home to the public and in the process, taking on new roles as cook, guide and cultural ambassador. From the guests' perspective, dining in a novel environment brings new experiences, exposing them to new people, knowledge and skills. A mixed-methods approach comprising mainly interviews and participant observations was adopted in this research. The findings reveal that PHD transforms home spaces yet retains the essence of home; compels members of a household to perform multiple roles simultaneously; facilitates the process of home-making; and encourages guests to actively engage as co-producers of their own cultural and culinary experiences. The aim of this article is to analyse how, during the period of 1937 to 1961, different Mexican governments used the cultural and ancestral dimension of maize, overcoming the controversies around its nutritional quality and utilising the benefits of agricultural research, to incentivise its production and consumption among the population, as well as its exportation to other countries, with the goal of turning it into a commodity that would incorporate the rural population into the national economy. For this reason, it was important to design campaigns to promote this grain in various media, seeking to exalt the idea of the ancestral food that was the basis of the Mexican diet and a symbol of Mexican culture. This analysis was constructed using contemporary newspapers and other publications of the period mentioned, as well as works that have addressed the topic of maize cultivation and consumption. The article seeks to deepen our understanding of the changes in the Mexican diet, the practices of production, and the sociocultural significance of maize as from the mid-twentieth century. SUSTAINABILITY , *YOUNG adults , *SUSTAINABLE consumption , *CONSUMPTION (Economics) , *STORAGE , *DISINVESTMENT - Abstract
Storage plays an important role in domestic practices as a banal yet essential means of practically accomplishing 'living together' and caring for people and material 'stuff'. However, storage and stored things also occupy a provocative and paradoxical place in debates around the sustainability of household consumption. Driven by renewed popular and scholarly attention to 'decluttering' and eschewing anything that does not 'spark joy', this paper considers the emotional and practical implications of generosity – as both concept and practice – in articulating the sustainability potential in storage and stored things. In so doing we problematise assumptions about 'clutter' as unsustainable. Drawing on vignettes from two projects concerned with material consumption in young adulthood, and drawing on – but going beyond – extant framings of geographies of care, we illustrate how shifting spatial and temporal ambivalences of storage mediate opportunities to engage in and with different scales of generosity. We argue that spatialities of storage are often less about deferring acts of divestment than they are a space in which to situate materialisations of significant emotional, care-ful(l) connections. We reflect on the implications of storage for sustainable consumption in the home and suggest how future work drawing on geographies of generosity might enrich our understanding. COVID-19 pandemic , *INFRASTRUCTURE (Economics) , *PROTEST movements , *SARS-CoV-2 , *CIVIL society , *LINDENS - Abstract
The Sars-CoV-2 virus and the related public health measures have triggered a break in everyday life. Despite growing global protest movements against these health measures, 'solidarity' was called for by civil society groups, affected businesses, and politicians as an intuitive mode of action in this crisis. Writing from Germany, we explore how in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis a specific discourse of solidarity and locality blossomed; namely a call to solidarity-based consumption. Using documentary photography, we discuss the shifts in the attribution of meaning and discourses through which consumption has been framed by small-shop owners in Linden, Hannover, Germany. In the paper, we explore the local geographies of boycotting and specifically the ways calls for boycotting are articulated by shop owners in the neighbourhood. We find that these calls became entangled with a specific neighbourhood identity. Through our photographic documentation we also find that purchases at local stores are now framed as a necessary act of local support. Finally, we reflect on the limitations of consumption as a strategy to overcome crisis and express solidarity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twenty-eight years after the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster recommended that all football grounds in the top two divisions in England and Wales should become all-seated, the UK government, in 2018, announced a review into the safety of modern standing areas and whether developments in stadium safety might justify changing the all-seating legislation to permit Safe Standing. These events are the outcome of a 30-year social movement in which a critical mass of supporters, through the relational networks they formed, have built collective action. Drawing upon both archival and fieldwork research to analyse the longer-term impact which all-seated stadia have had on football supporters' consumption of the game in England, the article uses relational sociology to tell the story of the movement, and studies the working tactics and structure of a small network mobilizing across the political and discursive fields of contention post-Hillsborough. It argues that whilst now a more effective movement with technological and political capital, Safe Standing continues to raise important questions around the historical views on football fans as somehow deviant and reinforces the long-term impact and legacy of Hillsborough on supporters' modern cultural consumption of the game by moving within the parameters of the all-seating legislation. SOCIAL evolution , *HAPPINESS , *PSYCHOANALYSIS , *CARTOGRAPHY , *NEOLIBERALISM , *PSYCHOLOGY - Abstract
This theoretical essay deals with the imperative of happiness in contemporary times, contemplating the current historical moment of the pandemic crisis. Therefore, the interface between psychology and other areas of knowledge, such as social sciences, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, is sought for the necessary intelligibility to apprehend the study. Initially, we intended to carry out a brief review of the conceptions of happiness throughout history, reflecting on how cultural transformations allowed happiness to be shifted from the field of dreams to the duty one. Subsequently, it is proposed to address the place that happiness, transformed into an imperative, occupies in contemporary times, crossed by the neoliberal capitalist discourse and through the arguments of the consumption and performance society. Finally, it is suggested that contemporary social cartography, under the aegis of neoliberalism and its reflections on culture, focuses on subjectivation processes in the form of illness. SUSTAINABLE consumption , *SUSTAINABILITY , *SOCIAL stratification , *SOCIAL mobility , *INFRASTRUCTURE policy , *QUALITY of life - Abstract
As India, a country with a complex relationship with cleanliness, modernizes rapidly, urban infrastructures are increasing even faster than the growing population. This paper explores the relationships between access to infrastructures, social mobility and resource consumption in everyday lives through the case of cleanliness in Mysore, Southern India. We draw on interviews with 28 Mysoreans about cleanliness perceptions and practices. Analysing cleanliness across class, caste and gender reveals that in the globalizing cleanliness cultures of Mysore those who are precarious and have less access to hygiene infrastructures, tend to have to clean more but don't resist expectations. We argue that, as cleanliness contours citizenship claims, the 'great unwashed' are excluded from participating in society. We question whether infrastructures and policies purported to increase the quality of life and provide basic human rights through increasing cleanliness, actually inadvertently contribute to deepening social stratification. - Abstract
This paper presents the narrative of vice-chief Meireles Karitiana, with the participation of chief-shaman Cizino Karitiana, who discusses the Karitiana people's origin myth, particularly in relation to the tension between God and Orá, his brother - a tension between good and evil. The paper describes what can be understood of ancestral life, and the value of connecting life and earth today, especially the forest. It highlights some aspects of the myth related particularly to consumption, domination, anthropocentricity, and the transcendent emergence of a third energy from the tension between the 'good' God and his 'bad' brother; this is related to Jungian thinking. COMMON decency , *URBAN geography , *YOUNG women , *BRAND name products , *TEENAGE girls - Abstract
Advancing an emergent scholarship on brands as having spatial and scalar effects, this paper examines the brand as an assemblage. In doing so, it focuses on youth engagement with the brandedness of motorbikes in the South Indian city of Chennai to examine in particular how brand assemblages shape gendered engagements with risk in Indian cities. Scooters and Motorbikes are important markers of 'youth' and middle classness in urban South Asia, representing freedom, mobility and fun. The Scooter has further been celebrated for putting women – literally and otherwise – in the driver's seat: creating the possibility for transgression and rebellion. This article complicates this narrative, by positioning scooters and motorbikes instead as sites upon which 'respectable' femininities are calibrated and articulated through young women's engagement with brands. In doing so, it unpacks the ways in which brand assemblages enliven the agency of commodities and participate in the disciplinary processes that shape gendered urban geographies of risk and respectability. This study critically examines how development interventions are imagined for singular places and subjects through a political process of product scripting that reconfigures the socio-technical meaning of second-hand objects from unwanted commodities to solutions that are appropriate for sub-Saharan Africa. Tracing the flow of second-hand goods demonstrates how development subjects are imagined to be adult, economically productive, rural beings. The paper finds that the second-hand mountain bicycle is inserted into an imagined place with a predetermined purpose that does not attend to alternative and heterogeneous urban and rural identities and needs. The paper highlights the compromises undertaken in designing development interventions as they are entangled with processes of waste recycling, commodification and philanthropy. SARDINES , *CITY dwellers - Abstract
Many cities have tried to reinvent themselves, but what role can new material and symbolic traditions play in urban transformations? Here we interrogate how ideology can be spread through a new tactile motif. Geographical work has focused on state-led, event and architecture-based development projects that drive change in the city. We suggest that the aesthetic, the sensory and the behavioural can also be fields through which urban change is driven. In Lisbon the sardine has emerged as a moniker for the city. An informal coalition of state and non-state interests have deployed the sardine to interpellate urban subjectivity, effecting processes of consumption and specifically touristification in the city. Building on the idea of interpellation we argue that both sardine symbols and actual sardines have hailed subjects in the city and the behaviours of residents and tourists have modified in response. Although the sardine is not the prime mover in urban transformation, our fieldwork shows how the affects of a new icon produce effects through invented traditions, street festivals and the tourist economy. - Abstract
Recognizing the conditions of polarization of the current media market, salient features of the cognitive processing of textual political information of conjunctural importance (real press news from contrasting ideological sources) are addressed. By applying an inter-subject experimental design of random groups (with an independent variable that assumes four levels) without a control group, the effects of ideologically biased journalistic treatment on information processing of local audiences are analyzed. Likewise, the modulating role of variables as 'need for cognition' and 'ideological self-placement' is valued. Among the main results, a pro-attitudinal pattern and a longer exposure time to non-family sources are confirmed, together with a connection between perception of bias, assessment of the topic and opinion about the source, variable by according to participants' self-positioning, among other factors that show a selective logic of self-referential and defensive consumption. The publication of Look at the lights, my love constitutes both a pause and a digression within Annie Ernaux’s work. The analysis of the notes she took during her visits to the hypermarket Auchan represents a sort of temporary epilogue to her journaux extimes and encourages to think about the text’s nature and its consideration beyond literature. Once we have assessed its possibilities as a research material for social sciences and, above all, for sociology, we will focus on the relationship between the organisation of shopping spaces and marketing strategies. Furthermore, we will pay attention to the socio-economic influence on the consumption process, which helps in forging new ties between clients and cities.

The retail recession has left a legacy of vacant shops on many shopping streets, with closures having significant consequences for local populations. But several new 'pop-up' formats are bucking this trend by bringing community-oriented forms of consumption back to the High Street. The micropub is a notable example, a small-scale venue selling real ale that has taken over a vacant shop premise, usually in smaller and struggling town centres. The rapid take-up of the micropub concept has attracted considerable attention, suggesting a model for retail regeneration based on community-mindedness and a close relationship between owner and customer. Based on ethnographic research in micropubs, alongside interviews with landlords, this paper suggests that their success is dependent upon the enthusiasm of landlords and customers alike, with such 'cultures of enthusiasm' encouraged via the nostalgic motifs of craft, tradition and Britishness that inform the curation of these seemingly 'authentic' spaces. The paper concludes that the micropub offers a form of socially-connective consumption highly valued by some, but stresses that there are clear limits to the ability of such spaces to be 'community fixers' given enthusiasm for real ale remains a distinctly white, male, and middle-aged pursuit. Abstract In times of pandemic, cities and national territories show changes in the organization of economic activities and in the consumption practices of the population. ABSTRACT: This research aims to verify the relationship between the discrimination perceived by LCBTQIA+ consumers and the emotional consequences (frustration and helplessness) of discriminatory consumption processes. This proposal is relevant since it entails an advance in the literature about consumers' perceived discrimination by outlining a new perspective to address this issue, considering the lack of Brazilian studies on the discrimination perceived by the LCBTQIA+ community, which is a worldwide phenomenon. Methodologically, this is a quantitative study based on an online survey to 210 participants from Brazil, selected through non-probabilistic sampling. Results show distinct levels of perceived discrimination by the studied population, particularly those classified as low or with no intensity in explicit discrimination and in service discrimination, as well as those classified as medium, low or no perceived intensity in subtle discrimination. Our findings reveal an average correlation with consumers' feelings of frustration and helplessness, although it is not possible to state that discrimination induces such feelings. The construct with the highest intensity of perceived discrimination is included in the dimension of discrimination at the service level. Some practical implications and research paths for future studies in the context of consumer discrimination are also exposed in this work.

Honey is the most widespread bee product in the world. Consumption-centered research supports the honey market, subsidizing marketing strategies focused on consumer’s profile. The present manuscript was aimed at providing a bibliometric analysis and a systematic review of scientific production on honey consumption. The data comprise periodical articles indexed in the Web of Science - Clarivate Analytics, processed in the VOSviewer software. A total of 472 articles with the radicals honey* consum* in the bibliometric analysis were identified. The manuscripts come from 68 countries, published between 1958 and 2018, with the largest number of publications in 2016 (52). Of the 472 articles initially retrieved, the reading of titles and abstracts revealed 22 specific papers about honey consumption. These articles comprise 14 countries. Their objectives included: to characterize the profile of the consumers, reasons that lead to the purchase and consumption of honey, perceptions about the market price, socioeconomic effects on the consumption pattern, among other aspects. However, the low number of articles identified in the systematic review reveals a gap still present in the literature on honey consumption. Despite the large number of articles originally identified at WoS database, the systematic revision revealed out the scarcity of publications directly dealing with honey consumption in their objectives, the number of which has been increasing from 2006 onwards. The results also showed that most research on honey consumption were based on quantitative methods, especially the use of face-toface interview for data collection, which reveals a potential for further studies focused on these approaches. Poland and the United States stood out with the major countries with articles on honey consumption, although the lack of such studies for countries with large honey production (such as China, Iran and Turkey). Finally, regarding to the country of origin of the authors, a low internationalization of scientific literature on this research issue was also observed. In this paper, we examine the social geographies of people with intellectual disabilities. We focus particular attention on the significance of shopping and spaces of consumption as they relate to questions social inclusion and belonging in the lives of PWID. The focus on consumption offers a useful counterpoint to a prevailing policy emphasis on social inclusion through productive activities. The paper also contributes to the literature on intellectual disability within social and health geography, shedding light on the varied socio-spatial experiences of people beyond the confines of community-care facilities and other separate spaces. Our analysis draws on data collected from a participatory research project in Toronto (Canada). The project involved a small but diverse group of people with intellectual disabilities, who led academic researchers on a series of excursions designed to explore those places and routes that make up their everyday social geographies. Shopping emerged as a significant but often ambivalent theme in the context of these geographies, and the analysis demonstrates the complex interplay of autonomy and control, pleasure and restraint, care and support that shape people's experiences of consumption. We conclude by discussing the significance of these findings for notions of social inclusion and belonging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Increased consumption of goods and services has contributed to environmental crises. Responsible consumption movements and the factors that contribute to the formation of pro-environmental behaviors have emerged in the Global North. Few studies have advanced in identifying the factors that aff ect the appropriation of pro-environmental practices in the Global South, specifi cally in cities of countries with emerging economies and fast urbanization. Through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation conducted with 34 families from diff erent socioeconomic categories in Medellin, Colombia, we addressed the following questions: Do environmental concerns infl uence consumption and waste practices? What factors aff ect the appropriation of environmental practices? Although diff erent factors limit responsible consumption, the results of this study show that pro-environmental practices related to consumption and waste contribute to the formation of pro-environment citizenships.

Introduzione Nel 1943 il docente di Princeton David Mitrany pubblicava un pamphlet dal titolo decisamente immodesto: “A working peace system: an argument for the functional development of international organization”.

As the legalization of cannabis is recent in Canada, autism stakeholders are concerned about the substance use of autistic adults who are at higher risk of developing addiction. Self-medication of anxiety and social inclusion difficulties can encourage cannabis use. The purpose of this study is to describe s ubstance use habits (tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, other drugs) and their consequences for persons diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) aged 16 to 30. An online questionnaire was completed by 65 adolescents and adults (mean age = 21.4 years) with ASD (32 men and 33 women). Substance use was measured using the adapted version 3.3 of the DEP-ADO questionnaire (Germain et al., 2016). Significantly, 24 persons with ASD (12 men and 12 women) report having consumed nothing (alcohol, tobacco and drugs) in the past 12 months. Persons with ASD who use cannabis report more frequent (daily) use and other drugs. However, the severity of their use is similar to that of their non-autistic peers. In addition, the prevalence of problematic use is very low in the autistic population (7.7%). The main consequences reported concern loss of money, health problems and risky behavior. Girls with ASD say they experience more consequences for risky behaviors related to their psychoactive substance use (PAS).

- Abstract
Consumption has changed in intensity, content and status, making the world conform to it, and associating itself with differentiation processes. We start from this presupposition without ignoring the problems it causes, like alienation. We see shopping malls as strategic to understanding the production of urban spaces in Brazilian middle-sized cities. Our perspective of analysis is that of the everyday, with attention to special practices of different users, and their relations with the producing agents of shopping malls. This implies taking into consideration the symbolic dimensions of consumption (active and collective behavior, system of values, roles of integration and of social control), as well as of shopping malls, supposedly converted into contemporary public spaces. This is directly related with the capacity of shopping malls to habour a strong social control in their interiors, while still producing the sensation of freedom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the turn of the xixth and xxth centuries, whereas meat consumption was supported by mainstream medicine and becoming widespread in Western societies, the French and Belgian vegetarian movement evolving in vegetarian circles led by physicians and hygienists was trying to prove scientifically the physical and ethical benefits of a vegetarian diet. This paper deals with the methods that were chosen to offer scientific evidence, in spite of the controversial nature of such results, by focusing on three inquiries whose authors, whether men or women, diverge in their dealings with the scientific field and the vegetarian movement.
