With the economic restructuring during the 1980s and 1990s in Hong Kong, most manufacturing plants were relocated to China and many industrial buildings were left neglected or vacant. At the same time, owing to limited land supply, a shortage of affordable housing has been a problem in Hong Kong for many years. Adaptive reuse of industrial buildings may be a way of solving this problem. However, adaptive reuse is not an easy decision because there are many factors affecting adaptive reuse. Therefore, this paper examines the current situation of adaptive reuse of industrial buildings in Hong Kong and identifies a list of factors affecting the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings. Six factors are considered Critical Success Factors (CSFs). Based on a Principal Component Analysis, 33 factors are grouped into eight principal components, namely, sustainability, economics and finance, the market, changeability, location and neighborhood, culture and public interests, legal and regulatory matters, and the physical condition of the building. The identified CSFs and principal factors provide a useful reference for various stakeholders to have a clear understanding of the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings in Hong Kong, especially for the government to review current policies of adaptive reuse.

Purpose: Key performance indicators (KPIs) play a pivotal role in evaluating the level of success of an organization in achieving its business objectives. The objective of the current research is to identify and prioritize effective KPIs in branding products and construction projects, which contribute to the success of construction companies in a competitive environment. Design/methodology/approach: The present research is of an inferential, descriptive and survey nature. In this study, we identified the influential key performance indicators of construction companies in branding products and construction projects for success in a competitive environment through a literature review and expert opinions. The data were collected using a questionnaire, and a combination of the one-sample t-test method with a 95% confidence level and the fuzzy multiple attribute decision-making (FMADM) method was employed for analysis. Findings: The results indicate that the most influential key performance indicators for construction companies in branding products and construction projects for success in a competitive environment are, in order of significance, the following indices: "Marketing and Advertising," "Financial," "Creativity," "Technical and Operational" and "Social and Political." Originality/value: The present research examines the importance of branding construction products and projects for the success of construction companies by improving their business objectives and utilizing key performance indicators throughout the product lifecycle (production and construction). The construction industry is complex and suffers from considerable challenges related to Project Delivery Systems (PDS) most notably cost overruns and delays. Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) has gained traction in recent years and is lauded to be an effective mechanism to overcome many of these challenges. However, implementing IPD in practice is not an easy endeavor, and there is a need to understand the motivation to adopt it as well as to understand the key challenges and critical success factors for its effective implementation. This exploratory study aims to address this deficit. We capture real-world data from professionals in the Irish construction industry to understand current practices and analyze the perceived challenges and critical success factors for the successful implementation of IPD. Our findings reveal a significant lack of awareness among participants regarding IPD and very low levels of implementation. Issues such as lack of trust, fear of litigation and reluctance to change are the major barriers to implementation. Critical success factors for successful implementation center on establishing integrated systems such as BIM and ensuring that information, process knowledge and organizational teams are integrated. The construction industry still faces various challenges in some developing countries, and one of the problems is the procurement of goods and services. The allocation of public procurement funds is significant to the national GDP. It is essential to conduct comprehensive research on government procurement in the construction industry in Indonesia due to the rapid growth of the construction industry in the last decade. This research focuses on the procurement of construction goods and services in the Ministry of Public Works and Housing by looking at the perception of the government as the project owner. This research aims to identify a model of critical success factors to improve public procurement performance in the construction industry from the government's perspective. The research method includes two stages, namely, the development of critical success, which consists of crucial factors and indicators that affect the performance of public procurement in the construction industry. It is a literature study of relevant previous research results from various countries that affect these critical success factors. Then, the second stage is a survey of experts' perceptions through questionnaires. The questionnaire data analysis used SEM-PLS software to quantify the relationship model of critical success factors to improve the performance of government procurement of goods and services in the construction industry. Data processing results include: business process factors affect 97.1%, regulatory factors affect 90.1%, information system factors affect 63.1%, human resource factors affect 56.1%, organizational factors affect 46.1%, and monitoring and evaluation factors affect 38%. In addition to the tools and techniques available, project risk management also depends on the attitudes of people in an organisation, how the available tools are used, and how the procedures are followed. Therefore, efforts to improve the project risk management capacity of organisations may fail if the diversity of people (characters, traits etc.) involved is neglected. Based on this argument, the aim of this study is to demonstrate that companies can improve project risk management using the perspectives of their key experts. In this context, an approach was proposed based on Q-Methodology and a case study has been conducted in a construction company in the Netherlands. The quantitative output obtained through Q-Methodology application was evaluated in conjunction with the qualitative data gathered from interviews conducted with the managers of different units within the company. As a result of this evaluation, three common perspectives were identified among the respondents under the names of 'Experience and Belief', 'Procedures and Management' and 'Culture and Communication', respectively. Then, a number of recommendations were made to the company. First, customized management approaches that integrate and balance the identified perspectives should be adopted. Second, a mature organisational risk management culture should be promoted. Project charters that specifically target risk management culture in projects can be used for this purpose. Third, risk management should be integrated into other activities, making it a normal part of employees' daily work. Finally, but not exclusively, the employees should be instructed on the use of risk registers and guidance should be put in place on how often they are expected to update the risk registers. This study demonstrates the benefit of considering employee diversity and leveraging perspectives in unlocking the potential of construction companies in terms of project risk management. The rapid advancement of digital technology has enabled digital transformation across various sectors, including construction. The construction industry has long been associated with conventional, labor-intensive practices that can adversely influence the entire construction process. However, this culture is changing as key players in the sector are progressively identifying and embracing the vast opportunities and associated benefits of using digital tools and technologies to improve the performance and outcomes of the overall project lifecycle. To this end, this study uses the Delphi technique to identify 70 factors that contribute to the digital transformation of the construction industry, categorizing them into five groups: management, design, technology, policy, and infrastructure. Delphi analysis is used to examine the critical success factors for digital transformation identified in the literature and rate their importance during the preconstruction, construction, and facility management phases. Furthermore, this research results in the introduction of the Digital Transformation Level of Readiness Framework (DTRLF) to help facility management firms, clients, organizations, contractors, and designers comprehend the implementation of digital transformation within their respective domains and support decision-makers in establishing action to adapt related technologies in their respected project phases. Public private partnerships (PPPs) have become increasingly common as a result of states' shifting roles in infrastructure services from service providers and operators to policymakers and regulators. PPPs have been established as a prominent technique of public service procurement in both developed and developing countries. PPPs give the parties the opportunity to split the costs and risks of providing a public service or building a public infrastructure. Successful project management is crucial, especially in light of PPP projects' size and complexity. This study investigates the critical success factors (CSFs) of PPP investments in developing countries. In this regard, 23 CSFs were selected based on a thorough literature review, and a questionnaire survey was run to examine the impact of those factors on PPP performance. The information is gathered from 82 different companies in Türkiye that represent both the public and private sectors. The statistical analysis results show that favorable legal framework, detailed and clear project identification, and extensive cost-benefit assessment are the most significant drivers of success. Additionally, factor analysis is used on the data to investigate and identify underlying correlations between the factors, as well as to categorize them into fewer, more focused, and more thorough factors. The results of factor analysis suggest five dimensions; namely project finance, project management, operational factors, procurement, and organizational factors. The study's findings are anticipated to benefit both the public sector in its focus on legal concerns to permit better operation and the contractors in its examination of their capacity to manage big projects more effectively. Purpose: The Singapore construction sector is promoting performance improvement by implementing collaborative contracting (CC). For CC's successful implementation, there is a need to sieve out the critical success factors (CSFs). Hence, this paper aims to explore factors influencing the adoption of CC and investigate the potential performance improvement by implementing CC. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the literature review, 23 CSFs were identified and packaged to a questionnaire to evaluate the CSF's priority as well as CC's potential impact on the project performance. After prior validation, 165 potential respondents were drawn from survey list by using simple random sampling. Finally, 31 valid responses were received. Findings: The survey result showed that the top five CSFs are mutual trust, all parties to commit fully, openness between parties, commitment to a win–win attitude and resource availability. The majority of respondents hold that CC implementation would improve overall project performance, decision effectiveness, cost, time, quality and risk performance. Research limitations/implications: Directors, project managers, contractor managers and site engineers have different perceptions of CSFs. Also rather than meeting the same requirements in the implementation of CC, there are differences among projects with different values. Originality/value: This study provides an in-depth understanding of the CSFs for industry practitioners adopting CC and CC's potential impact on project performance. Technological development has placed pressure on construction industry. Reviewing its activities due to an increase in a globally competitive market has manifested from the construction environment's changing need to meet customer satisfaction. These pose challenges to many construction industries in developing countries to improve the quality of the product produced to meet the customer's needs. The study aims to examine the impact of information technology (IT) application on value re-engineering (VRE) implementation that gives rise to customer value addition, through enhanced profitability performance and cost reduction for the construction industry to offer benefits for customers to achieve satisfaction. Using purposive sampling techniques, the subjectivist methodology was utilised to establish critical success factors in 40 purposefully sampled building construction operators within Abuja, Nigeria. The result further revealed that quality design and collaborative working among the VRE practitioners help the customer to derive the benefit of waste reduction by achieving a value-added perspective using high technology that influences both design and construction operations for the project. Early dissemination of information and design adequacy reduces pressure on both materials and labour scarcity. Finally, there is a significant need for the construction process to be re-engineered through the utility of change enablers and the introduction of assistive technologies like IT as drivers of VRE implementation on value addition that give rise to customer-derived benefits. This study focuses on entrepreneurs associated with construction-based renewable energy projects located in Pakistan. The objectives of this research to identify the critical factors that affect the success of entrepreneurs. We used three dimensions of critical success factors such as government support (GS), access to finance (AF), and personality traits (PTs). This study consists of four important direct and indirect relationships. First, we examine the direct relationship between critical success factors (CSFs) and the success of entrepreneurs. Second, we investigate the direct relationship between CSFs and supportive leadership (SL). Third, we also examine the indirect relationship of supportive leadership between CSFs and the success of entrepreneurs. Fourth, we test the direct relationship between supportive leadership and the success of entrepreneurs. In this study, we collected data from 255 entrepreneurs using convenience sampling techniques associated with construction-based renewable energy projects in Pakistan. A five-point Likert scale is used for data collection through a research questionnaire. The direct and indirect path analyses were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results of this study conclude. First, in the direct relationship, all the critical success factors, i.e., personality traits, access to finance, and government support, positively and significantly impact entrepreneurs' success. Second, the results confirmed that all critical success factors positively correlate with supportive leadership. Third, the results also revealed that supportive leadership significantly and positively mediates the relationship between the three CSFs and the success of entrepreneurs. Fourth, the outcomes also demonstrate that supportive leadership positively affects the success of entrepreneurs. Energy management in the construction supply chain is considered an important instrument to reduce the environmental impacts of the construction industry. Sustainable construction through energy conservation is not well accepted in developing countries. Very few studies considered energy-efficient supply chain (EESC), but such studies are scarce in developing countries. Therefore, it is necessary to explore factors contributing to success in the adoption of EESC practices in construction projects. This study aims to analyze critical success factors (CSFs) for EESC in the construction sector of Pakistan. By integrating the Delphi method, ISM, and MICMAC, this study introduced a novel framework to analyze CSFs for EESC. Initially, CSFs were searched from previous literature and screened out with the Delphi method. Later, CSFs were analyzed and classified through ISM and MICMAC. Results show that top-management support, international pressure for EESC, and environmental policy pressure are the most important factors that contribute to the success of EESC adoption. Further, Risk identification and management, awareness of EESC, sustainable Strategic planning, research and development activities, competitive advantage, green manufacturing, and supplier management are the least important factors regarding EESC adoption in the construction industry of Pakistan. These results will contribute by supporting managers to take necessary measures for the effective progress of EESC adoption. Architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is currently in a transition process that deeply affects the long-established way of collaboration and building information modelling (BIM) is at the centre of this transition. Achieving the smooth integration of BIM in construction projects requires companies to spend great effort and resources. In that sense, it is crucial to generate a comprehensive list of critical success factors (CSFs) of BIM adoption. This study aims to systematically identify the CSFs of BIM implementation in the construction phase and evaluate their effectiveness on real projects for Turkish construction industry. Within this context, an extensive literature review was conducted and CSFs were identified. The number of times each factor had been cited in the literature was recorded as the frequency. A comprehensive framework with 6 components was utilized including drivers, inputs, enablers, barriers, benefits and impacts. The identified CSFs were assigned to relevant components based on their contents. In an attempt to distinguish the responsibilities of the industry, firms, and project teams; each factor was categorized into three levels of influences (industry-, firm-, and projectlevel). A case study was employed to examine the effectiveness of each factor in practice through conducting interviews with the practitioners of 18 different construction projects. The interviewees were asked to specify the effectiveness of each factor in a 1-5 Likert Scale based on their experience in that particular project. This study is expected to promote BIM implementation in the construction industry and inform the industry professionals about the most significant factors to focus on. Lean implementation aims to maximize customer satisfaction while minimizing waste. However, the Lean philosophy has not yet been well understood in the construction industry due to complex and dynamic nature of construction projects. Even though Lean efforts in construction have recently gained popularity, there are still problems with the implementation processes. Therefore, it is essential to identify critical success factors (CSFs) in Lean implementation for conducting projects more effectively. Due to lack of studies in revealing CSFs in Lean implementation and the need for an up-to-date Lean implementation roadmap, this article provides an extensive set of CSFs for construction practitioners to benefit in their projects. Within this context, 27 variables were identified through an in-depth literature review. Moreover, a survey is designed and given to Lean practitioners to rank the variables based on their importance. The findings of the survey indicate that management commitment is ranked as the most important driver of Lean implementation, whereas the supportive nature of governmental regulations in Lean is ranked as the least important. A factor analysis of CSFs result in six factor groups, namely motivational factors, project factors, strategic and policy factors, company factors, technical factors, and workforce and resource factors. This pilot study follows up on Construction Workers' Views on Hight School Education as a Barrier to Success in Their Field, IVETA Volume 26, Number 3 (2021). This research asks construction workers, all self-identified themselves as being either apprenticeship coordinators, trainers, or mentors of new workers in their industries, in the greater St. Louis, MO (USA) area. The conversations asked three questions; "Did High School Prepare you for Success in the Field of Construction" "What High Schools Are Doing Well" and "What do High Schools Need to Start Doing or Do Differently?" conversations followed. Purpose: This research aims to examine the practice of design for safety (DfS) in the construction industry of Saudi Arabia. Design/methodology/approach: The study has adopted a mixed-method approach through the use of questionnaire surveys administered to professionals in architecture and engineering firms, as well as follow-up interviews with selected participants. The participants consisted of architects, structural engineers and electromechanical engineers. The study investigated dimensions related to knowledge and awareness, attitude toward DfS implementation and critical success factors for DfS implementation. These various dimensions have been assessed accordingly through the mean ratings in the relevant section of this paper. The thematic responses obtained from the follow-up interviews have been summarized and presented. Findings: The findings from this study reveal a high level of awareness of DfS in Saudi Arabia. It also revealed that the most influential critical success factors are legislation and awareness of stakeholders, whereas the major barrier is the fear of cost overruns by the clients and their representatives. Originality/value: The design stage of construction projects is crucial to enhancing the safety performance of projects through effective control of hazardous situations. The concept of DfS is, however, immature in many countries, such as Saudi Arabia, due to lack of awareness, enabling policies and other barriers. The value of this study is that it shows the current level of knowledge and practice of DfS in architecture and engineering firms in Saudi Arabia and consequently triggers the interest of stakeholders in its adoption and implementation. The interventions of decision support tools and techniques are necessary for making decisions on complex issues that involve numerous parameters. In the construction industry, the identified barriers that affect the implementation of decision support tools revolve around the issues of scarce information, diverse project characteristics, bureaucracy, and low precision of statistical decision models. This study aimed to design a decision support tool for the assessment of the suitability of a design-build method (hereafter DST-DB), which can efficiently assist practitioners in the adoption (or rejection) of the design-build method with greater convenience. The selection factors were identified by compiling and validating key design-build selection factors of critical success factors (CSFs) and design-build-drivers (DBDs) through an extensive literature review and consulting with industry experts, resulting in the development of DST-DB. The obtained results showed the influence of DST-DB on the practitioners' perceptions of a design-build method, where DST-DB recorded significantly higher usability, likelihood, precision, confidence, and satisfaction rate than the conventional approach (multicriteria decision analysis) of decision-making in the construction industry. There have been many other decision support studies over the years, but the current study served as one of the first decision support studies for design-build construction projects in the construction industry, which offered appreciative insights into the importance of adopting CSFs and DBDs in decision support tools (DST-DB). Purpose: Studies on total quality management (TQM) implementation among construction enterprises in Nigeria have used few TQM constructs and variables and yielded fragmented results. This study adopts comprehensive TQM constructs and variables for comparison with the previous studies to establish the critical variables for effective TQM practices in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach: Data collection from a stratified sample of Nigerian construction practitioners with practical or theoretical knowledge of TQM, using web-based questionnaires consisting of twelve validated TQM implementation constructs and 65 variables. 72 home and overseas practicing professionals participated (21% response rate) using nonprobability sampling techniques. Following acceptable Cronbach's alpha reliability values equal to 0.7, the author/s rank-ordered the twelve TQM constructs and 65 TQM variables. Then, they computed the z-scores and the percentiles to identify the TQM critical variables – 75th percentiles and above, contrasted with the threshold normalized values equal to 0.5. Furthermore, Pareto analysis determined the 20% "vital many" responsible for 80% of the problem. Findings: Customer focus, top management commitment and supplier quality management were the top-25% constructs, while employee involvement, statistical process control and design quality management were the bottom-25% constructs. Thirteen TQM critical variables emerged from the top-25% constructs. Practical implications: Top management to involve employees to be customer-focused and driven toward suppliers' quality management system. Priority should be given to implementing the critical variables advanced in this study. Despite being the world's most significant contributor to the global Gross Domestic Product, the construction industry has untapped potential in its productivity, with frequent project delays and conflicts. Thus, a growing number of contractors implement visual Lean tools, such as the Last Planner® System (LPS). The paper explores the essential visual Lean planning elements to increase the cohesion between planning and production in construction projects through a project case study and lessons learned in the industry. The research indicates that look‐ahead plans, soundness checks, early phase planning, BIM models, and applying visual Lean planning in both the design and production phases are critical success factors when using the LPS. One of significant advancement of techniques in the construction industry is off-site construction (OSC) technique that has existed for long but only recently gaining leverage from the advances in manufacturing. OSC carries much potential and even termed as the modern method of construction. OSC has been identified as an effective solution to address speed expectations and quality issues facing the global construction industry. Particular to the housing sectors such as in Western Australia (WA), implementing OSC holds significant potentials but has also been considered risky by local builders, hence its lower uptake in WA. However, risks are often double-edged and rewards may be waiting for builders willing to take on the risks and become the main OSC providers. This paper presents the findings from a research project aiming to explore OSC adoption as a potential source of competitive advantage through the first mover advantage (FMA). The data collection was designed to capture potentials of gaining competitive advantage based on the existing characteristics of the sector. While confirming the potential of OSC adoption as a source of competitiveness, findings also revealed the barriers and enablers in adopting OSC in WA followed by identifying the critical success factors of OSC adoption in WA to gain competitive advantage. Findings from the data analysis were then aggregated to form a holistic framework showing the interconnectedness between differentiation/focus, cost leadership and FMA. Purpose: This study aims to lay the groundwork for the potential application of value management (VM) in construction projects. This paper presents a critical review on the status of VM in a developing country and highlights the role of perceptions on critical success factors (CSFs) for the phases of VM studies, as the participants in a VM study should consider CSFs tailored to the local context. Design/methodology/approach: A series of interviews and a questionnaire were conducted to understand the drivers, perceptions, barriers, and CSFs of VM in the Jordanian construction industry. Although descriptive statistics were used to analyze the status of VM, a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was adopted to highlight the interrelationships between perceptions and the CSFs of the three phases of VM (i.e. pre-workshop, workshop, and implementation). Findings: The descriptive analysis revealed conflicting viewpoints for perceptions and drivers. Most practitioners acknowledged little awareness of VM phases, and the SEM results indicated that perceptions of VM, in terms of its capacity in improving the scope and objectives of the project, and reducing overall costs, most strongly influenced the CSFs of the implementation phase in terms of support and clear plan for implementation, and had the least influence on the pre-workshop phase. Further, the perceptions had a moderate effect on the CSFs of the workshop phase and it tended to be positive, highlighting the importance of function analysis in this phase. Originality/value: This is the first study to reveal the status of VM in Jordan in terms of adoption, drivers, perceptions, barriers and CSFs; no prior studies have investigated how perceptions can affect the CSFs of each phase of VM and the endorsement of VM by the construction industry. Many critical success factors (CSFs) have been identified and tested over the years to aid resource-constrained project managers in delivering successful building construction projects. Human- or team-related success factors, in particular, have received more attention lately due to the benefits of effective collaboration among designers, contractors, and specialty trades. However, as a management tool, CSFs were never intended to be static. Recent technological and contracting advancements are changing the way that project delivery teams interact, and previously identified success factors may be less applicable to contemporary projects. The purpose of this research was to identify current team-related success factors through a thematic analysis of interviews conducted with project leaders on nine highly successful and seven highly unsuccessful projects, as defined by their cost and schedule performance. Specific examples from each interview were coded into 32 general statements. Commonalities in these statements were then developed using specific case contexts into nine subthemes and four overarching key themes. The key themes, which characterize success factors arising within the team, included: removing barriers to communication, developing a relational project culture, understanding the owner's role, and promoting autonomy. When compared to prior research, these results provide insight into how team-related success factors in the construction industry have evolved over time and establish a direction for building effective project delivery teams in the future. Purpose: This paper aims to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) that affect the implementation of total quality management (TQM) and to investigate, from the perspective of Brazil, the latent factors for TQM implementation in the construction industry. Design/methodology/approach: The methodology consists of two methods. First, a literature review was conducted to identify CSFs for TQM implementation. Then, empirical research was conducted from a survey questionnaire applied to 130 professionals who have experience in the Brazilian construction industry. SPSS version-25 was used for data analysis, using descriptive statistics, and, finally, principal component analysis for identifying the latent factors. Findings: The study findings portray convergences regarding the practitioners' perception in the light of the 20 critical factors identified in the literature, which can serve to make construction professionals aware of the key factors to TQM implementation. In addition, two latent factors, quality practices and human factor were identified, and they can assist the leaders and decision-makers for the implementation of TQM in the construction industry of a developing country. Purpose: The construction organisations in developing countries are lagging in digital technology usage; hence, they are still characterised by poor project delivery and technological backwardness. To checkmate this problem, partnering with other organisations was proposed, while critical factors needed for successful digital partnering of construction organisations were assessed. Design/methodology/approach: The study adopted a qualitative research approach. Delphi method was used to get experts' opinion on some identified factors necessary for successful digital partnering. The experts for the study were selected using defined criteria, and a combination of interquartile deviation, Kendall's coefficient of concordance and chi-square was used to achieve robust consensus among respondents. Mann–Whitney U test was also used to ascertain the difference in perception of experts. Findings: The findings revealed trust in digital partners, top management support and digital partner selection as the three key success factors for partnering. Other factors that can be considered alongside these main factors are the creation of a common goal, a long-term commitment, effective communication, proper conflict resolution and structured as well as continuous digital training, workshops and meetings. Practical implications: Instead of going through the digitalisation journey alone, construction organisations, particularly in a developing country like South Africa, stand a better chance of surviving the dynamic construction and digital environment by partnering with other organisations within and outside the industry. Carefully selecting the right partner, trusting in their capability and ensuring constant commitment is necessary for the success of the process. Collaboration is key to the success of construction project delivery. Several researchers have realised the importance of collaboration for health and safety (H&S) performance. The construction industry (CI) is affected by poor H&S performance exacerbated by lack of collaboration. The purpose of the article is to conduct a systematic literature review to identify factors of collaboration that will improve H&S performance in CI. A literature review method was adopted; identification test method was used to identify collaboration factors. Using Scopus and Google Scholar, a total of 758 papers were identified. 57 papers were found to be relevant for review through content analysis and were analysed in terms of source and year of publication, research method, country of origin, and research focus. The review identified 11 critical success factors of collaboration: trust, culture, commitment, communication, clear roles and responsibilities, resource/information sharing, mutual goals, conflict resolution, early involvement of key participants, competence, and continual improvement. These factors can influence H&S performance in construction projects. Focusing on these factors can facilitate collaboration, thus improving H&S performance. The limitation of this article is that the literature review covered a period between 2010 to 2019. Searches in other search engines might have provided additional information on collaboration. The findings of this study make way for future research into the impact of collaboration on H&S performance and provide an understanding that H&S performance can be improved by adopting collaboration. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for implementing lean construction and consequently to improve performance levels in the construction industry in the context of Saudi Arabia. There is currently no framework for implementing lean construction specifically tailored to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) construction industry. Existing lean construction frameworks are focussed on other countries and are less applicable in the KSA due to differences in socio-cultural and operational contexts. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs the interpretive structural modelling (ISM) technique for data collection and analysis. First, following a survey of 282 construction professionals, 12 critical success factors (CSFs) for implementing lean construction in the KSA construction industry were identified by Sarhan et al. (2016). Second, 16 of these professionals who have 15 years or more experience were exclusively selected to examine the contextual relationship among the 12 CSFs. A row and column questionnaire was used for a pairwise comparison of the CSFs. A matrix of cross-impact multiplications (MICMAC) was applied to analyse the questionnaire data to develop an ISM model that can serve as a framework for implementing lean construction. Third, the framework was subjected to further validation by interviewing five experts to check for conceptual inconsistencies and to confirm the applicability of the framework in the context of the KSA construction industry. Findings: The findings reveal that the CSFs are divided into four clusters: autonomous, linkage, dependent and driving clusters. Additionally, the findings reveal seven hierarchies of inter-relationships among the CSFs. The order of practical application of the CSFs descends from the seventh hierarchy to the first hierarchy. Originality/value: The new framework is a significant advancement over existing lean construction frameworks as it employs an ISM technique to specify the hierarchical relationships among the different factors that contribute to the successful implementation of lean construction. The primary value of this study is the development of a new framework that reflects the socio-cultural and operational contexts in the KSA construction industry and can guide the successful implementation of lean construction. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) to implement integrated project delivery (IPD) systems in the Korean construction industry. Design/methodology/approach: This study categorized potential CSFs and analyzed them using factor analysis and multiple regression analysis to choose the best ones based on responses from Korean construction experts. The drive toward implementing an industrialized building system (IBS) in Malaysia is in line with Malaysia's Construction Industry Transformation Plan 2016–2020, which seeks to increase more than double the construction industry's productivity. IBS is able to accelerate the construction timeline, provide a safer working environment on site, produce a higher quality of construction, and save costs. Although the introduction of IBS in Malaysia is not new, its acceptance has not been extensive, and IBS implementation is still slow. Thus, to support the successful implementation of IBS, it is vital to determine the factors that influence the achievement of this aspiration. Therefore, this study aims to identify and evaluate the critical success factors (CSFs) that contribute to the smooth implementation of the IBS dimensions within the context of the Malaysian construction industry. By doing so, the uptake of IBS can be accelerated. In order to consolidate the set of candidate success factors, these CSFs were identified from the literature review and confirmed through a self-administered survey questionnaire. Then, the value of importance of each CSF was calculated in a second survey. Based on the factor analysis, 15 CSFs were identified and grouped into five major elements: strategy, sources of funding, process, people, and enabler, with each factor comprising its own set of components. Purpose: Building information modeling (BIM) is recognized as a major innovation in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Understanding the factors that influence the AEC's adoption of BIM will benefit the research and practice of BIM. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach: This study provides empirical evidence for the accumulated knowledge of BIM adoption by examining the context of Chinese construction industry. Based on the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework in the innovation diffusion literature, the authors develop a research model that integrates the critical success factors related to the technology of BIM, the construction company and the environment in Chinese construction industry. The authors collected two different data sets from engineering consulting firms and construction firms in China, and conducted rigorous analyses using a sophisticated statistical approach. Findings: The authors found that the relative advantage of BIM was a major factor that enabled BIM adoption, while the complexity of BIM was an inhibiter. In addition, management support was also a significant antecedent of BIM adoption. However, organizational readiness was significant for engineering consulting firms but not for construction firms. Surprisingly, the authors did not find consistent significant impacts of any environmental factors. Last, younger firms were more likely to adopt BIM. Originality/value: One of the first to apply the TOE framework to integrate three groups of factors that may explain BIM adoption in China. Such a comprehensive framework provides a much broader perspective of BIM adoption to evaluate the impacts of different antecedent factors. Purpose: Some initiatives have been proposed and implemented to facilitate successful project delivery and improve coordination and collaboration in the design, construction and management phases of project development. Building information modeling (BIM) is one of those initiatives that, though recent, however, have made a significant impact on the construction industry in some countries. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach: This paper aims to explore the critical success factors for BIM implementation in the architecture, engineering and construction industry of Hong Kong through a mixed research method (structured empirical questionnaire survey and expert interviews). Findings: The most influential success factor relates to the client's acceptance with BIM projects, proper organizational structure to support a BIM system within the company and financial aid from the government to set up the BIM system. The expert interviewees also stressed the need for willingness from project staff members to learn and utilize BIM. Practical implications: This study has contributed to the establishment of more practical and effective strategies for ensuring full adoption of BIM in Hong Kong. Practical recommendations for enhancing BIM adoption in the construction industry were highlighted. In recent years, blockchain technology has attracted momentous attention in the construction industry. However, a state-of-the-art review of critical success factors (CSFs) for implementing blockchain technology in the construction industry is unexplored. In addition, there is no stage framework or a common set of CSFs for blockchain technology in the extant literature. Therefore, this review study aims to develop a stage framework and identify a common set of CSFs for successful blockchain technology implementation by analyzing published articles related to the studied domain. This review study adopted a systematic literature review and a science mapping approach to objectively identify a common set of CSFs, research gaps, and future research directions. Focusing on 78 journal articles retrieved from the Scopus database, influential journals, keywords, countries/regions, and documents in the domain of CSFs for blockchain technology in construction were analyzed. The results revealed that countries like China, USA, UK, and Australia have made the most contributions to this domain. Of the 22 CSFs, five main common sets for blockchain technology were (1) decentralized system (protocol), (2) transparency in data information for construction lifecycle processes, (3) ensuring data immutability, (4) increasing data security and reliability, and (5) providing full traceability of prefabrication. In the stage framework of CSFs for blockchain technology, some CSFs play an essential role throughout the entire construction life cycle processes (e.g., CSF#1 decentralized system and CSF#2 transparency in data information for construction life cycle processes). Four key research gaps and future research directions are proposed. They include (1) digital innovation, (2) smart contracts and information management, (3) intelligent construction, and (4) data analytics methods and techniques. Overall, the findings and checklist of CSFs for blockchain technology would be beneficial for successful exploration and practice in this field. Purpose: The decentralisation of information and high rate of mobile content access in the construction industry provides an ideal scenario for improvement of processes via the implementation of the paradigm of the Internet of Things (IoT). Smart devices are considered as the objects interconnected in the IoT; therefore, they play a fundamental role in the implementation of digital solutions during the execution of construction projects. The purpose of this paper is to assess the critical factors for a successful implementation of smart devices in the construction industry. Design/methodology/approach: An empirical study was performed in the Dominican Republic. This country, located at the heart of the Caribbean, presents an economy that strongly relies on the construction industry. Following a systematic approach, a qualitative data collection and analysis was performed based on semi-structured interviews and content analysis to professionals of construction companies in the Dominican Republic, enquiring the concept of smart devices and critical success factors for implementing the devices in the industry. Findings: The key success factors obtained from the contestants were leadership, technology awareness, company size, usability of proposed solution, cost of implementation and interoperability. Originality/value: This paper provides information to clients of the construction sector regarding the benefits of embedding smart devices into their business activities. Furthermore, this study provides a better understanding of the key factors to be considered by construction organisations when embedding smart devices into their projects. This study also provides recommendations for distinct stakeholders of the construction sector, such as policy makers, clients and technology consultants. Policy makers should especially consider factors such as technology awareness and leadership to develop the right policies for the integration of the IoT in construction projects. Architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) organizations must adopt building information modeling (BIM) technology, define workflows, and develop internal policies to deliver BIM projects successfully. AECO projects are known as BIM projects when BIMis used during such projects. Organizations must identify project objectives, critical success factors (CSFs), and operational critical success factors (OCSFs); set performance measures; and perform assessments to verify if they are progressing toward success. OCSFs are the factors that can drive the CSFs such that operational issues are well resolved by the project stakeholders. There are several BIM standards and guidelines to appropriately diffuse BIM technology and workflows. However, there are few holistic approaches to identify OCSFs. To meet this necessity, a step-by-step procedure is proposed with an empirical approach to define project objectives, CSFs, and OCSFs. The framework of influencing factors (IFs) is developed by organizing the wide range of IFs from the literature. As a case study, the proposed approach is used to identify OCSFs for Taiwanese BIM projects. It is not only generally applicable to identify OCSFs in other countries, but also capable of helping a small team of BIM experts to identify OCSFs. Purpose Kaizen in construction is a new paradigm stemming out of lean production systems. Construction companies in developing economies, such as Nigeria, have a task to innovate to liquidate in certain cases. With the aid of kaizen, which encompasses the benefit of stakeholder relationship improvement and management, profitability enhancement and delivery of projects to satisfied clients, construction companies can realise expected growth. An exploration of the critical success factors (CSF) and associated drivers within the limits of the scope is essential. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approach Exploratory factor analysis statistical tests categorised the CSF identified in the literature review section. A detailed sampling approach extracted 135 questionnaires under the five-point Likert scale format from a larger population in Nigeria. An exploration of important drivers and iteration of eigenvalues combined with asymptotic significance of the drivers provided the CSF and significant drivers.Findings Construction management function, operational efficiency, construction business ethics and construction cost management were the CSF established from the exploratory factor analysis tests. It was confirmed that kaizen can be adopted in Nigerian construction companies with reflections on the principal drivers for the CSF.Research limitations/implications The exploration of the CSF and drivers associated with kaizen implementation can be applied to other developing countries with considerations of implementation in terms of cost and time.Originality/value The identification of CSF provides ample opportunity for consideration of kaizen in construction companies. There is an extensive number of factors that influence the success and failure of projects, however, literature lacks an inclusive categorization of them especially in construction. This paper aims to identify critical success factors (CSFs) of project management and categorize them into five criteria groups: (1) project, (2) project management, (3) organization, (4) external environment and (5) sustainability. To determine the interdependence and weight of the CSFs, data was gathered from 26 Australian project managers from the construction industry. The contribution of the paper is in identifying cause and effect criteria of CSFs and in identifying their weights. Using the fuzzy decision making and evaluation laboratory (fuzzy DEMATEL) method it is shown that the organization, external environment and sustainability are “cause” criteria, while project and project management are identified as “effects”. The fuzzy analytic network process (fuzzy ANP) is used to weigh the sub-criteria by considering the interdependence of the main criteria. The findings revealed that the highest weights are assigned to top management and sponsor support ( s ), stakeholder expectations ( w 45 = 0.050 ) and end users imposed restrictions ( w 41 = 0.039 ), respectively. In this study, a questionnaire survey was developed in order to investigate the application of TQM in Turkish construction industry and identify the critical success factors, barriers, and benefits of this application. The questionnaire was completed by 32 firms. The results of the study revealed that there are short comings in TQM application in Turkish construction industry especially in relation to top management commitment and leadership; the greatest benefit of TQM to the firms is 'increased customer satisfaction'. Although building information modelling (BIM) has been implemented in building projects in Singapore, barriers such as the duplicate efforts for designers and contractors to create models appear to exist. Thus, BIM implementation needs to be enhanced. The objectives are to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) for enhancing BIM implementation and investigate the interrelationships among these CSFs. 32 success factors were identified through a literature review and a questionnaire survey was conducted. The results indicated that 15 CSFs were identified and grouped into integration and accuracy of models (IAM), commitment and training from the management (CTM), and advantages and support of implementation (ASI) through factor analysis. The results from structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis revealed that CTM resulted in IAM and from ASI, while ASI facilitated IAM. The proposed framework indicating the CSFs and the intergroup relationships provides an in-depth understanding of BIM implementation and can help firms to commit on their part of project-wide BIM adoption and associated advantages. Purpose Although scientific research community has shown considerable interest in identifying critical success factors (CSFs) for public-private partnership (PPP) projects, yet effort at assessing and compare CSFs within similar PPP infrastructure projects received scant attention. The purpose of this paper is to identify, assess, and compare the CSFs in PPP transport infrastructure projects.Design/methodology/approach The study adopted literature review and three PPP case studies including structured interviews and review of documentary reports in each case study. The outcome of literature review provided a total list of 26 identified success factors, which was used to design a case study protocol using failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) technique. FMEA was conducted on each 26 identified success factor to assess their criticality in the three PPP case studies.Findings The results of FMEA revealed a total of ten CSFs in the concession of the road; four CSFs in the concession of the airport; and eight CSFs in the concession of the seaport. Also, the cross-case analysis showed the three prevalent CSFs, this includes government involvement by providing guarantees, political support, and project economic viability.Practical implications The study findings including lessons learnt in each case study would positively influence policy development towards PPP transport infrastructure projects and the manner in which partners (i.e. public and private sector) go about the development of PPP transport projects.Originality/value This research would help PPP stakeholders to focus their attention and priorities in managing the identified CSFs in achieving long-term success in PPP transport infrastructure projects implementation. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the similarities and differences of critical success factors (CSFs) for public-private partnership (PPP) projects in developing and developed countries, using Ghana and Hong Kong as examples.Design/methodology/approach An empirical questionnaire survey was conducted with experienced PPP practitioners in Ghana and Hong Kong. Survey responses were analysed using Kendall’s concordance analysis, mean score ranking, quartile groupings analysis and Mann-Whitney U test.Findings The results indicate that a favourable legal and regulatory framework is very critical in both jurisdictions. Further, technology transfer, technological innovation, public/community participation and coordination and government providing financial support are of low importance in both jurisdictions. The non-parametric test shows that 16 CSFs are of different importance in Ghana and Hong Kong. Specifically, CSFs related to the socio-political and economic conditions of PPP projects are very critical in Ghana, whereas CSFs directly related to the organisation and relationship of PPP projects are very critical in Hong Kong.Originality/value The outputs of this study add to the international best practice framework for successful PPP implementation. Further, international private investors and governments who are yet to adopt the PPP concept would be considerably informed of the investment strategies to employ when engaging in PPP arrangements.
