Despite a slower economy in 2002, these projects together represent over $3.5 billion in value, which is a jump of over $152 million over last year. After losing out to New Mexico last year, Nevada once again claims the top spot for mega-projects in 2002, with over $1.7 billion of construction in the top 15 projects alone. Arizona's 15 largest projects reeled in a staggering $1.4 billion in construction costs. A large number of publicly funded projects helped buoy the top end of the market, with several jail projects and freeways. The only downbeat note was New Mexico's 62 percent drop in its ten largest projects, from over $1 billion in 2001 to just $386 million in 2002. The drop would've been even more drastic had it not been for nine of the 10 projects having public funds backing them.
