This document is a special issue of the Heat Transfer Engineering Journal, dedicated to the research studies presented at the International Conference on Thermal Analysis of Energy Systems. The conference, organized by the Heat Pump Research Institute in India and the Department of Mechanics at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Kazakhstan, took place virtually in December 2021. Out of over 100 papers presented, eight were selected for this special issue, covering topics such as thermodynamic analysis of thermal systems, heat exchangers, and heat transfer enhancement studies. The papers were reviewed by experts in the field and revised accordingly. The document expresses gratitude to the editor, authors, and conference co-organizers, and announces that the next conference is planned for June 2024. This editorial provides an overview of a special issue dedicated to the 9th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, and Thermodynamics—HEFAT2012—hosted on Malta. All papers for this conference were peer reviewed and 270 papers were accepted. Of these, 10 of the best papers were selected for this issue and peer reviewed for a second time according to journal standards. The 10 papers focus on the characteristics of oxyfuel and air-fuel combustion in an industrial water tube boiler, numerical and optical analysis of a weather-adaptable solar reactor, the mitigation of crystallization fouling using projectiles in tubular heat exchangers, the mitigation of crystallization fouling in a single heated tube using projectiles of different sizes and hardness, a framework for the analysis of thermal losses in reciprocating compressors and expanders, an annular impinging jet controlled by radial synthetic jets, multi-effect plants and ionic liquids for improved absorption chillers, the effect of climatic parameters on the heat transfer mechanisms in a solar distillation still, empirical correlations for slightly decaying grid turbulence, and pool boiling on modified surfaces using R-123. The author discusses the 17th Heat Transfer Photogallery for the 2013 Summer Heat Transfer Conference (SHTC) held in Minneapolis, Minnesota from July 14-19, 2013 and 2013 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exhibition (IMECE) held in San Diego, California from November 15-21, 2013.

It is our pleasure to present this special issue ofHeat Transfer Engineeringwith a selection of papers presented at the 4th International Symposium on Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation, ISHTEC2012, held January 6–9, 2012, in Guangzhou, China. The conference was sponsored by the Key Laboratory of Enhanced Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation of Education of Ministry of China. More than 160 delegates including 42 foreign delegates from 16 countries came to the conference and there were more than 140 papers presented at the conference. The topics covered a wide variety of fields from new heat transfer theories, to micro heat transfer, to enhanced heat transfer technologies and the heat transfer problems in energy use systems. This special issue is a selection of the best 21 papers presented at the conference, including 2 review papers and 19 full-length research papers. The analysis of these papers showed that there are new trends in recent years in heat transfer and energy conservation: (1) New heat transfer theories are actively proposed to optimize heat transfer problems. (2) New alternative energy use technologies are being extensively investigated to meet the desire for a low carbon society. (3) Even for the seemingly traditional processes and equipment, new phenomena and findings are continuously disclosed, during which computational fluid dynamics has been more and more relied on. This lecture is dedicated to the memory of Professor Eddie Leonardi, formerly International Heat Transfer Conference (IHTC-13) Secretary, who tragically died at an early age on December 14, 2008. Eddie Leonardi had a large range of research interests: he worked in both computational fluid dynamics/heat transfer and refrigeration and airconditioning for over 25 years. However starting from his Ph.D. 'A numerical study of the effects of fluid properties on natural convection' awarded in 1984, one of his main passions has been natural convection and therefore the focus of this lecture will be on what Eddie Leonardi has achieved in numerical and experimental investigations of laminar natural convective flows. A number of examples will be presented which illustrate important difficulties of numerical calculations and experimental comparisons. Eddie Leonardi demonstrated that variable properties have important effects and significant differences occur when different fluids are used, so that dimensionless formulation is not appropriate when dealing with flows of fluids with significant changes in transport properties. Difficulties in comparing numerical solutions with either numerically generated data or experimental results will be discussed with reference to two-dimensional natural convection and three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection. For a number of years Eddie Leonardi was involved in a joint US-French-Australian research program--the MEPHISTO experiment on crystal growth--and studied the effects of convection on solidification and melting under microgravity conditions. Some results of this research will be described. Finally, some results of experimental and numerical studies of natural convection for building integrated photovoltaic (B1PV) applications in which Eddie Leonardi had been working in the last few years will be also presented. Radiant floor heating has received increasing attention due to its diverse advantages, especially the energy saving as compared to the conventional dwelling heating system. This paper presents a numerical investigation of airflow and heat transfer in the slot-vented room with the radiant floor heating unit. Combination of fluid convection and thermal radiation has been implemented through the thermal boundary conditions. Spatial distributions of indoor air temperature and velocity, as well as the heat transfer rates along the radiant floor and the outer wall, have been presented and analyzed covering the domains from complete natural convection to forced convection dominated flows. The numerical results demonstrate that the levels of average temperature in the room with lateral slot-ventilation are higher than those without slot-ventilation, but lower than those in the room with ceiling slot-ventilation. Overall, the slot-ventilation room with radiant floor heating unit could offer better indoor air quality through increasing the indoor air temperature and fresh air exchanging rate simultaneously. Concerning the airborne pollutant transports and moisture condensations, the performance of radiant floor heating unit will be further optimized in our future researches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Based on a revised version of RELAP5, which can be used for super-critical pressure calculation, a model of mixed spectrum SCWR (SCWR-M) system is established. To analyze the transient behavior of SCWR-M and develop mitigation measures during loss of flow accident (LOFA), some important parameters, e.g. reactor coolant pump (RCP) coast-down time, Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) upper water volume and safety injection flow, etc., are chosen for the parametric analysis. The results achieved so far indicate that the SCWR-M system design is feasible and promising. Three important mitigation measures for LOFA of SCWR-M are derived from the results: RCP coast-down time of more than 15s, RPV upper water volume of more than 27m3, and safety injection of more than 5% of the system design flow. Information about the Second International Workshop on Heat Transfer Advances for Energy Conservation and Pollution Control held at the Xi'an Garden Hotel in Xi'an, China from October 18-21, 2013 is presented. The event was participated by hundreds of researchers from different countries worldwide who participated in discussions and listened to the message of speakers about the processes of heat transfer, energy shortages as well as environmental pollution.

Abstract: To form a licensing basis for a new methodology for a fuel channel safety analysis code for CANDU-6 nuclear reactor, a CATHENA model for a post-blowdown fuel channel analysis has been developed, and tested for a high temperature thermal–chemical experiment CS28-1 [Lei, Q.M., 1993. Post-test analysis of the 28-element high-temperature thermal–chemical experiment CS28-1. In: 4th International Conference on Simulation Methods in Nuclear Engineering, Montreal, PQ, 1993]. Pursuant to the objective of this investigation, the current study has focused on understanding the involved phenomena, their interrelations, and how to maintain a good accuracy of the temperature and H2 generation rate prediction without losing the important physics of the involved phenomena. The transient simulation results for the fuel element simulators (FESs) for the three fuel rings and the pressure tube were reasonably good as proven by the simulation results. This is thought to be due to success in reproducing the initial steady state condition well, and due to the detailed modeling features of CATHENA code for the coupled conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer in a complex fuel bundle geometry. However, one problem still remained unresolved, i.e. the inability to accurately predict the pressure tube temperature at the initial steady state condition, and an adjustment of the CO2 gap conductivity necessary to match the measured pressure tube temperatures. However, this raises a question as to how the transient FES and the pressure tube temperature can be predicted so well in spite of an insufficient justification for using the “non-participating medium assumption” for the CO2 gas gap. Through this study and the affiliated previous study for the steady state, it was found that the radiation heat transfer model of CATHENA among the FESs of the three rings and the pressure tube as well as the exothermic metal–water reaction model based on the Urbanic–Heidrick correlation are reasonably accurate and sound. Also it was found that an accurate prediction of the initial condition of the experiment is very important for an accurate prediction of the whole transient as it serves as the starting point for the transient. Abstract: A US National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop entitled “Frontiers in Transport Phenomena Research and Education: Energy Systems, Biological Systems, Security, Information Technology, and Nanotechnology” was held in May of 2007 at the University of Connecticut. The workshop provided a venue for researchers, educators and policy-makers to identify frontier challenges and associated opportunities in heat and mass transfer. Approximately 300 invited participants from academia, business and government from the US and abroad attended. Based upon the final recommendations on the topical matter of the workshop, several trends become apparent. A strong interest in sustainable energy is evident. A continued need to understand the coupling between broad length (and time) scales persists, but the emerging need to better understand transport phenomena at the macro/mega scale has evolved. The need to develop new metrology techniques to collect and archive reliable property data persists. Societal sustainability received major attention in two of the reports. Matters involving innovation, entrepreneurship, and globalization of the engineering profession have emerged, and the responsibility to improve the technical literacy of the public-at-large is discussed. Integration of research thrusts and education activities is highlighted throughout. Specific recommendations, made by the panelists with input from the international heat transfer community and directed to the National Science Foundation, are included in several reports. Abstract: This special issue presents the results of the Sandia organized Model Validation Challenge Workshop, held May 2006. The workshop brought together researchers from different fields to present various approaches to model validation, and focused on the methodological elements of model validation rather than on model building. Three problems were defined in the disciplines of structural statics, structural dynamics, and heat transfer, all with a uniform structure. The workshop was specifically designed to investigate the relative merits of different approaches to hierarchal model validation through application to these problems. This paper describes a hierarchal approach in the challenge problems, presents the uniform conceptual framework that was used for the challenge problem definitions, and provides an overview of the organization of this special issue. Abstract: A lattice Boltzmann algorithm for fluid–solid conjugate heat transfer is developed. A new generalized heat generation implement is presented and a “half lattice division” treatment for the fluid–solid interaction and energy transport is proposed, which insures the temperature and heat flux continuities at the interface. The new scheme agrees well with the classical CFD method for predictions of flow and heat transfer in a heated thick-wall microchannel with less mesh number and less computational costs. Abstract: A series of tests have been carried out with a miniature loop heat pipe (mLHP), which has been developed for consumer electronics cooling, for horizontal and four vertical orientations under different sink temperatures. The mLHP has a cylindrical evaporator of 5 mm outer diameter and 29 mm length. The steady-state operating characteristics are similar for different orientations except for the orientation where the evaporator is above the compensation chamber. At an evaporator temperature of 75 °C, an evaporator heat load up to 70 W can be reached with thermal resistance of about 0.2 °C/W. The transient behavior of the mLHP is studied in detail. In general, the mLHP can be started up with very low power input (5 W). Big temperature oscillations in the liquid line were found in many cases, however, the temperature oscillations in the evaporator are minimum. The orientations greatly influence the operating characteristics of the mLHP. At least for the horizontal orientation, the overall performance of the tested mLHP is satisfying. Abstract: La Soufrière (1467 m) is the active island arc volcano of Guadeloupe Island in the Lesser Antilles arc. Its historical eruptions are more or less violent phreatic outbursts the last of which, in 1976–1977, led to the evacuation of nearly 70000 persons. The subsurface structure of the volcano consists of calderas, craters, and avalanche amphitheatres nested within the composite pile of eruptive products. Since the last magmatic eruption, dated ca. 1440 AD, the four phreatic eruptions have developed radial fractures on Soufrière dome favouring the development of a huge active hydrothermal system emphasized by a tropical environment. After the eruptions, the thermal state and the stable ground water flow are completely disorganised during several years during which the slow mineralization of rocks is becoming again preponderant. Sealing of fractures and decay of rocks permeability act as a cap for upward thermal transfers. Therefore Soufrière dome operates as a valve, resealing the hydrothermal system underlying the volcano thus providing over pressurization that could lead to the next phreatic eruption. In 1992 new small seismic swarms have appeared. Several of them are recorded every year while the emission of acid gas slowly increases. In order to recognise the superficial electrical resistive and conductive zones (less than 100 m depth) as well as the cavities on Soufrière volcano, we have made Very Low Frequency (VLF) surveys in 2000. Electrical conductive zones are clearly associated with major radial faults starting from the summit in which the hydrothermal activity takes place. In the continuation of these active hydrothermal fractures hot springs are located down slope. Conversely some of the resistive zones are associated with inactive clayed and sealed or opened faults. The distribution of the conductive zones allows detailing the state of the superficial part of the hydrothermal system of La Soufrière. The distribution of vertical clayed zones associated with major faults supposes Soufrière dome constituted of more or less consolidated blocks joined side by side and lying on the hydrothermally floor of crater Amic. Abstract: In the finite volume approach for incompressible flow and heat transfer, the discretization of the convection term and the treatment of the coupling between velocity and pressure are the two major issues affecting solution stability, accuracy and convergence rate. In this review paper, some recent advances made in the CFD/NHT & Enhanced Heat Transfer Center of Xi''an Jiaotong University, China, are presented and their applications in the study of heat transfer enhancement are also briefly summarized. Abstract: Exact numerical solutions, essentially free of empiricism were obtained for fully developed turbulent forced convention in concentric circular annuli with uniform heating on the inner wall and no heat transfer the through the outer wall. The numerically computed values of Nu are represented almost exactly as a function of Nu 0, Nu 1, Nu ∞, and Pr t/Pr. Here, Nu 0 and Nu ∞ are the limiting and asymptotic solutions for Pr =0 and Pr →∞ respectively, and Nu 1 is the special solution for Pr = Pr t ≈0.8673. The predicted values for all Re, all Pr, and all aspect ratios are in agreement with the experimental data within their scatter. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this paper the author develops an algorithm on the basis of heat and thermodynamics theory, to predict data for film condensation on horizontal integral—fin tubes for R32/R134a and R32/R125 mixtures in 25/75, 50/50 per cent compositions by mass correspondingly. Emphasis is focused on the presentation of thermophysical properties of the blends involved in the process considered, i.e. liquid density, viscosity, surface tension, thermal conductivity and latent heat of vaporization. The main point of this work is to define with computational techniques the blend with the most favourable composition, as an environmentally acceptable solution for R22 replacement in some shell-side condensers. The Joint 18th International Heat Pipe Conference (IHPC) and the 12th International Heat Pipe Symposium (IHPS) was held at Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel in Jeju Korea during June 12-16, 2016. The joint conference organized by Heat Pipe Committee of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) combines two historical triennial gatherings into one massive conference. More than 240 participants, sponsors, and exhibitors attended the conference from 24 countries around the world. The article provides information on some of the papers presented at the conference on Process Integration, Modeling and Optimization for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction, which was first organized under the CHISA Congress umbrella in 1998. In his paper, Igor Bulatov has further developed an existing methodology for an optimized grassroots design of plate fin heat exchanger networks to be able to retrofit existing HENs of this type. In one of the study, the authors presented an application of a modern advanced modeling approach, Computational Fluid Dynamics, to the optimization of flow in an exhaust duct combined with utility water heater.
