Many health sciences librarians as well as other professionals attend conferences on a regular basis. This study sought to link an innovative peer review process of presented research papers to long-term conference outcomes in the peer-reviewed professional journal literature. An evidence-based conference included a proof-of-concept study to gauge the long-term outcomes from research papers presented during the program. Real-time peer review recommendations from the conference were linked to final versions of articles published in the peer-reviewed literature. The real-time peer review feedback served as the basis for further mentoring to guide prospective authors toward publishing their research results. These efforts resulted in the publication of two of the four research papers in the peer-viewed literature. A third presented paper appeared in a blog because the authors wanted to disseminate their findings more quickly than through the journal literature. The presenters of the fourth paper never published their study. Real-time peer review from this study can be adapted to other professional conferences that include presented research papers. This special collection of papers had its genesis at the IEEE Computer Society Workshop on Software Testing and Test Documentation held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during December 18-20, 1978. This collection is devoted to selected papers on program testing that were presented at the Workshop. The thrust is towards approaches that can support the heuristic components of testing. There is increasing recognition that it is unlikely there will be a grand theory of testing which will lead to fully automated testing systems. Instead the tester will be called upon to use his intuition and problem-dependent knowledge in a discipline manner to test for a variety of specified error types. But it is crucial that this less ambitious, heuristic activity be nevertheless firmly embedded in an underlying framework which is logical, rigorous and well-understood.

This paper reflects on the 30th anniversary of the African Geographical Review (AGR) by looking at the history and future of the journal. It originated in a panel discussion organized by the current editors of the AGR at the 2010 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) in Seattle. It synthesizes presentations made by participants of the panel including William Moseley, Florence Margai, Isaac Luginaah, Maano Ramutsindela, Padraig Carmody, Kefa Otiso, Bakama BakamaNume, and Ian Yeboah among others. The paper demonstrates how the East African Geographical Review (EAGR), a regional journal serving the East African region from 1963 to 1996, has grown into the mouthpiece of the Africa Specialty Group (ASG) of the AAG. The role of individual agency and the tenacity of the editors of the journal since its arrival in the United States have been central in growing it into the ASG's mouth piece. We anticipate that when the next stocktaking of the AGR occurs, the AGR will be a leading global geography journal on Africa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Aims This paper describes alcohol industry involvement in the 2010 annual conference proceedings of the National Conference of State Liquor Administrators (NCSLA) in the United States. Design The author attended the conference, observed conference attendees and panelists and identified key themes in the panel sessions. Setting The NCSLA Annual Meeting took place 20-24 June 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Participants NCSLA meeting attendees and panelists were professionals from state alcohol control systems; federal government agencies; and companies representing the alcohol industry. Measurements The total number of conference attendees and participants were counted as well as the number of attendees and participants from regulator, industry and public health sectors. Findings More than two-thirds (72.2%) of the 187 conference attendees were from alcohol producers, importers, wholesalers, retailers or their attorneys. Nearly two-thirds (65.0%) of the 40 panelists were from the alcohol industry. The author of this paper was the only attendee, and the only panelist, representing public health policy. Conclusions The National Conference of State Liquor Administrators in the United States is dominated by the private, global companies that produce, import, distribute and sell alcohol, highlighting a lack of public health considerations within the Association's liquor control agenda. The Allied Social Science Associations is a marketing name for an annual three-day, citywide conference of about 9,000 economists that is organized, managed, and controlled by the American Economic Association (AEA). AEA invites the participation of about 50 additional (i.e., allied) economics-related societies that organize the scholarly content of a portion of the ASSA meetings. It is this broader meeting that operates under the ASSA flag. Although the AEA has met periodically with other social science associations since the 19
th century, the current format dates back to the 1960s. The convention rotates among approximately 10 large U.S. cities. A centralized staff at AEA headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee has managed the convention since 1986. The ASSA name was first used on the conference program in 1952. This monograph is a pioneer venture, the first publication in which both professional historians and child developmentalists focus on the history of child development and in which historians gear their work to an audience of developmentalists. The monograph is one result of the decision of the U.S. Society for Research in Child Development to make the history of the society, of child development research, of the family, and of childhood the theme of its fiftieth anniversary meeting, held in Detroit, Michigan on April 2 1-24, 1983.

The article presents information about plans of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) this year. Two items may be of prime interest in this year's council affairs. The highlight of the annual meeting was a paper by George Homans on the relationship between the social sciences and the humanities. It was generally felt that this session did much to create a better understanding between these two sectors of the academic community. The ACLS Committee on the Secondary Schools has commissioned background papers from scholars in each of the disciplines and areas concerned with the teaching of social studies, and the paper on sociology is being written by Gresham Sykes. Grant and fellowship programs of interest to members of the Association are intended primarily to provide uninterrupted free time for scholarly activity. Travel Grants to international congresses and conferences are presently available only for meetings to be held after July 11, 1962. Since the ACLS will rely upon the Association for recommendations for all congresses and conferences which are primarily sociological in nature, inquiries of this nature should be addressed to the executive office.

This article presents the highlights of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) Ninth International Congress, held in Chicago, Illinois from August 30 to September 2, 1992. The congress theme was An International Commitment to Prevent Child Abuse. The host organization was the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse based in Chicago. The congress had over 1700 participants from nearly 80 different countries including over 40 developing countries. A majority of participants were from outside the U.S. and for many this was their first experience of an international congress. Rather than attempt to summarize the contents of a congress than in addition to plenary sessions included over 450 papers, a masterclass, research briefings, discussion groups, an exhibition, theatrical productions and social events, three individuals share with us some of their impressions of Chicago 1992. The ISPCAN 9th International Congress was preceded by a Pre-Congress Seminar which was held on the four days prior to the congress. About 100 participants attended at the University of Chicago's campus.

Based on an address given at the April 1995 INFORMS meeting in Los Angeles, this paper's purpose is to suggest the opportunities that the Pacific Rim will bring to OR/MS and INFORMS. It first looks at the two important needs in the profession: to improve the scope of its communications with the public and to expand the context in which OR/MS work is done. After describing some of the radically unfamiliar and different conditions affecting enterprises on the Pacific Rim and suggesting their important challenges, the paper describes some influences acting to inhibit the free growth of the profession and its contributions to society. It closes by suggesting how meeting the challenges of the Pacific Rim cannot only help solve the problems this new context poses, but also help prepare the profession for its larger international future.
