The author discusses the challenges facing health services and their staff across Europe. She informs that although at the conferences many innovative oral presentations demonstrating how high quality patient-centred care is being implemented are presented, many of these projects are not shared with others once the conference is over. She states that she wants to support such authors who do not have the time or experience to write their project up as a full paper for publication.

Information about several papers discussed at Second Global Conference on Contraception and Sexual and Reproductive Health and the 14th congress of the European Society for Contraception and Reproductive Health (ESC) held from 4-7 May 2016, at Basel, Switzerland is presented. Topics include reproductive health care and cultural and political issues of reproduction. The author reflects on ESC congress. The aim of the present paper is to present the message transmitted by the Presidential Lecture given during the first congress of arthroscopy organised in Romania, in March 2016, by the Romanian Society of Arthroscopy and Sports Trauma (SRATS). The goal was to present the evolution of medical care in Romania over the years, with the remarkable progress made in the first half of the twentieth century and the current status of arthroscopic surgery as seen from the point of view of medical professionals, as well as from a governmental point of view. The EuroSpine 2006 meeting will be held in Istanbul, Turkey from September 20-23, 2006. The 10th International ARGOS Symposium will be held on January 26-27, 2006 in Paris, France. The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Cervical Spine Research Society will be held Berlin, Germany on May 17-19, 2006. The 2nd International Football and Sport Medicine Conference 2006 will be held on March 3-4, 2006 in Dusseldorf, Germany. The 33rd annual meeting of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine on June 13-17, 2006 in Bergen, Norway.

Background: COVID-19 has reinforced the centrality of health workers at the core of a well performing and resilient health system. It has concomitantly exposed the risks of staffing and skills shortages and the importance of protecting the health workforce. This paper focuses on highlighting some of the lessons learnt, challenges and future needs of the health workforce in Europe in the context of COVID-19. Methods: We use secondary sources and expert information. Results: During the pandemic innovative and flexible approaches were implemented to meet increasing demand for health workers and new skills and responsibilities were adopted over a short period of time. We have seen the rapid adaptation and use of new technologies to deliver care. The pandemic has underlined the importance of valuing, protecting and caring for our health workforce and the need to invest appropriately and adequately in the health workforce to have sufficient, capable and wellmotivated health workers. Some of the main challenges that lie ahead of us include the imperative for better investment, to need to improve recruitment and retraining whilst better retaining health workers, a focus on domestic sustainability, redeploying and developing new skills and competences among health workers, enabling more effective multi-professional collaboration and team work, improving the quality of education and training, increasing the public health focus and promoting ethical and sustainable international recruitment of health workers. Conclusions: The WHO European Region through its European Programme of Work 2020-2025 is fully committed to support countries in their efforts to continue to respond to COVID-19 and whilst addressing upcoming health workforce challenges. The article discusses the 15th International Philosophy of Nursing (IPONS) Conference held on 25–28 August 2011, at the West Park Centre in Dundee, Scotland. Several speakers at the conference included professor Sam Porter, Queen's University, Belfast, Peter Allmark, of Sheffield Hallam University and Robert Newsom from Guildford Technical Community College in North Carolina. Several papers presented at the conference focused on the theme of 'Healthcare and the Politics of Austerity.'

Information on the topics discussed during the Tufts Center of the Study of Drug Development's (Tufts CSDD) biennial international symposium on pharmaceuticals and healthcare policy held in July 2005 in France is presented. The event focuses on health reform efforts in the U.S. and Europe. The symposium intends to determine areas of transcontinental convergence and divergence, and to search for common ground.

We present a report on the recent symposium on dementia and depression in older adults, held in Ohrid, Macedonia and discuss the urgent need for development of psychogeriatric and affiliated services in the Southeast European region. The limited epidemiological data from nine countries in this region suggest high variability of prevalence rates for mental health problems in older adults (>65 years of age). At the moment, there are over 520,000 older adults in the region living with dementia alone. The prevalence rates for dementia (%) are either similar to those of the developed countries (9-9.6% in build-up northern Greece and Albania, respectively) or substantially lower (3.6-4% in rural northern Greece and Montenegro, respectively). The latter may be due to either cultural diversity or lack of adequate medical health service provision and expertise to recognize and diagnose dementia. Indeed, there is a lack of organized specialized services for older adults with mental health problem in the region. The symposium raised the awareness of this problem in the region and called for networking between isolated individuals working in this field to improve the current situation and facilitate further development of adequate clinical services to meet the growing needs of the older adults in the countries of the Southeast Europe. The International Compression Club (ICC) is a partnership between academics, clinicians and industry focused upon understanding the role of compression in the management of different clinical conditions. The ICC meet regularly and from these meetings have produced a series of eight consensus publications upon topics ranging from evidence-based compression to compression trials for arm lymphoedema. All of the current consensus documents can be accessed on the ICC website (http://www.icc-compressionclub.com/index.php). In May 2011, the ICC met in Brussels during the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) annual conference. With almost 50 members in attendance, the day-long ICC meeting challenged a series of dogmas and myths that exist when considering compression therapies. In preparation for a discussion on beliefs surrounding compression, a forum was established on the ICC website where presenters were able to display a summary of their thoughts upon each dogma to be discussed during the meeting. Members of the ICC could then provide comments on each topic thereby widening the discussion to the entire membership of the ICC rather than simply those who were attending the EWMA conference. This article presents an extended report of the issues that were discussed, with each dogma covered in a separate section. The ICC discussed 12 'dogmas' with areas 1 through 7 dedicated to materials and application techniques used to apply compression with the remaining topics (8 through 12) related to the indications for using compression. The article presents updates related to cyberpsychology in Europe. The web site curetogether.com permits the users to anonymously track different health measures including symptoms, treatment plans and medication schedules and share it to other individuals with the same conditions. It highlights several upcoming meetings including "Medicine Meets Virtual Reality 2011," "Computer-Human Interaction Conference," and HCI International 2011."

Across Europe, the role of the welfare state is constantly being questioned and even eroded. At the same time, funding sources for post-graduate medical education and training are under attack as regulators review the working relationships between physicians and industry. Both of these issues have profound consequences for cardiologists and their patients, and were, therefore, chosen as the themes of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) 2014 Spring Summit held at Heart House, Sophia Antipolis, 25-26 March 2014. The meeting noted that some of the changes are already affecting patient care standards and that this is exacerbated by a reduction in research and education programmes. The principle conclusion was that EHRA must find better means of engagement with the authorities across Europe to ensure that its views are considered and that ethical patient care is preserved. Participants were particularly alarmed by the example from Sweden in which future healthcare planning appears to exclude the views of physicians, although this is not yet the case in other countries. The demand for greater transparency in relationships between physicians and industry was also discussed. Although intended to eliminate corruption, concern was expressed that such moves would cause long-term damage to education and research, threatening the future of congresses, whose role in these areas appears underestimated by the authorities. The articles in this supplement were developed from a recent pan-European conference entitled ‘HIV in Europe 2007: Working together for optimal testing and earlier care’, which took place on 26–27 November in Brussels, Belgium. The conference, organized by a multidisciplinary group of experts representing advocacy, clinical and policy areas of the HIV field, was convened in an effort to gain a common understanding on the role of HIV testing and counselling in optimizing diagnosis and the need for earlier care. Key topics discussed at the conference and described in the following articles include: current barriers to HIV testing across Europe, trends in the epidemiology of HIV in the region, problems associated with undiagnosed infection and the psychosocial barriers impacting on testing. The supplement also provides a summary of the World Health Organization's recommendations for HIV testing in Europe and an outline of an indicator disease-guided approach to HIV testing proposed by a committee of experts from the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS). We hope that consideration of the issues discussed in this supplement will help to shift the HIV field closer towards our ultimate goal: provision of optimal HIV testing and earlier care across the whole of the European region.
