The article presents summaries of papers delivered at the 125th annual meeting of the American Statistical Association. The meeting took place on September 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the paper "On the Construction of Stochastic Working Life Tables," by Haskel Benishay, stochastic working life tables are constructed and evaluated. The essence of the construction of stochastic rather than the traditionally deterministic working life tables is in the utilization of the realistic assumptions that the number of births, the number of entries into the labor force, the duration of life, and the duration of working life, are random variables. The end result is a working life table with a double entry in each cell rather than the single traditional one. The implications of this approach for the evaluation of fluctuations in various subcomponents of the labor force are evaluated. Another paper "Measuring Elasticities of Air Travel," by Samuel L. Brown, summarizes research on the response of demand for air travel to differences of fares, incomes, and elapsed travel time. There are three kinds of studies. Multiple regression studies of time series of air traffic, fares and income in the national domestic market yield short-period fare elasticities and income-elasticities. A quarterly first-difference model stands well the usual statistical tests.

Background: Speaking invitations are used by faculty promotion committees as evidence of external recognition. However, women are underrepresented as speakers at specialty society conferences despite the rise in women physicians. The purpose of this study was to estimate to what extent the gender of session conveners is associated with the gender distribution of invited speakers at SAGES meetings. Methods: A retrospective audit of annual SAGES meeting programs during 2009-2018 was performed. All invited panel speakers, defined as faculty delivering a prepared oral presentation in a session under the organization of one or more chairs, were identified. The gender of speakers and chairs/co-chairs was determined. Hands-on courses, paper sessions, military symposia, mock trials, and jeopardy sessions were excluded. We compared the proportion of all-male panels in sessions with all-male conveners versus sessions with at least one woman convener. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square and t tests. Results: There were 3405 speakers and 459 panels identified. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 2836 invited speakers on 402 panels were analyzed. Women represented 15% of all speakers, increasing from 9 to 19% (2009 to 2018). This reflects the rise in the proportion of women overall members (11% in 2010 to 19% in 2018). The proportion of panels with at least one woman convener increased from 12 to 58%. All-male panels represented 40% of all panels (n = 163) and their proportion significantly decreased over time from 50 to 31% (p trend < 0.000). Sessions with all-male conveners had 52% all-male panels, while sessions with at least one woman convener had 19% all-male panels (p < 0.001).Conclusion: The proportion of women invited speakers at the annual SAGES meeting has significantly increased over time. All-male convener sessions were more likely to convene all-male speaker panels. Including a woman chair/co-chair increased the number of women speakers and is a successful strategy to achieve gender balance in conference planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

CONFERENCES & conventions ,SOCIOLOGY ,ANNUAL meetings ,MEMBERSHIP - Abstract
The article presents several official reports and proceedings of various societies of the U.S., published in the December 1940 issue of the journal "American Sociological Review." The report of the "American Sociological Society," provides a very good answer to the question of what is possible in the way of making a living by taking sociology. The census of membership has revealed that sociologists who are members of the Society are employed in nearly 250 different types of occupations. Alfred McClung Lee, chairman of "Committee on Public Relations," is anxious that all papers to be given at the annual meetings should be in his hands. The Committee needs these papers early in order to aid newsmen in the proper selection and presentation of material and thus lessen the danger that the society and persons on the program may be presented to the public in a bad light because of hasty, ill-considered or out-of-context reporting. The press is only too happy to cooperate in this matter, but it cannot be done to the best advantage unless the Committee can get copies of the papers early. Every paper read at annual meetings becomes the property of the society, chairmen of divisions and sections should so inform the participants on their programs and collect and turn over to the secretary or editor all papers presented.

This paper was presented in a special session in the American Anthropology Association's 108th Annual Meeting in December 2009 in honor of Dr. Antonio Lauria-Perricelli. It is a research study that explored how a moral panic discourse in the 1970s shaped a public perception of the lower Bronx in New York City, and it examined how media stereotypes of blighted neighborhoods in the Bronx were reworked in social actors' perceptions of local poverty, race, and crime. The Bronx' mediated reputation was analyzed in the context of recent reforms in community policing. These reforms influenced a local discourse on social control and city authority that was infused with media stereotypes of Bronx residents. This article presents an account of a the annual U.S.-based Socialist Scholars Conference which was attended by the author. There were speakers from a wide range of age group. The topics discussed were on several issues such as where does a Socialists heart go these days, if not to the workers of his own country? Well, to the African-Americans, to the native poor and to the peasants of distant lands. Running pervasively through almost all of the nine weekend panels was the theme of search for a new constituency; and if Marx's invidious characterization of both the lumpenproletariat and the peasantry was all but unanimously rejected. it was obviously not so much for "scientific" as for emotional reasons.

This article provides an overview of the issue which gives emphasis on both the plenary and the presidential addresses presented at the 1985 annual meeting of the Mid-South Sociological Association held in Little Rock, Arkansas. The success of the meeting was made even more so by these two extremely timely and thought provoking papers from Bill Catton and Marsha McGee. Both not only reflect the introspective nature of sociology and sociologists at this time, but also provide direction for the discipline. Hence, it is hoped that the quality of both the 1985 plenary address and the 1985 presidential address serves as an encouragement to those who would like to attend the 1986 annual meeting in Jackson, Mississippi.

This article presents proceedings of the 108th annual meeting of the American Economic Association (AEA) held in San Francisco, California from January 5-7, 1996. The John Bates Clark Medal for 1995 is awarded to the economist David Card in recognition of these impressive achievements. Card has largely defined and developed the currently dominant methodology in applied labor economics. This approach sets out a testable hypothesis, searches for exogenous variation in the key determinants, and leads to the labor and time-intensive development of an appropriate data base. He has successfully applied this methodology to the most important issues in labor economics, and his research papers have achieved the status of standard references in many areas. The one hundred and eighth annual meeting of AEA was called to order by President Victor Fuchs on January 6, 1996. The first item on the agenda to be considered was minutes of the previous annual meeting as published in Papers and Proceedings issue of the journal "The American Economic Review."

CONFERENCES & conventions ,MEETINGS ,ACCOUNTING ,FINANCIAL statements ,ANNUAL meetings - Abstract
The article focuses on the twenty-sixth annual convention of the American Accounting Association that was held in New York from December 29 to 30, 1941. The first session started on December 29, 1941. The topic for the first session was related to accounting principles underlying corporate financial statements. Some of the papers discussed were — "The Cost Principles," by Walter A. Staub, "The Revenue and Income Principles," by James L. Dobr and "The Capital Principle," by Samuel J. Broad. The second session was held on the same day. Six years ago in this city at the twentieth annual meeting of the American Association of University Instructors in accounting the association was reconstituted as the American Accounting Association. At that time many felt that what was accomplished at that meeting was only a streamlining of name and only a few recognized the change as particularly significant. For some years prior to 1936 a small group of members were attempting to awaken the association to its opportunity to render a real service.
