Abstract: Significantly enhanced catalytic activity of a nanocomposite composed of conducting polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with graphene oxide (GO) was achieved through a simple electrochemical reduction process. The nanocomposite (PEDOT/GO) was electrodeposited on an electrode and followed by electrochemical reduction, and the obtained reduced nanocomposite (PEDOT/RGO) modified electrode exhibited lowered electrochemical impedance and excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of dopamine. Based on the excellent catalytic property of PEDOT/RGO, an electrochemical sensor capable of sensitive and selective detection of DA was developed. The fabricated sensor can detect DA in a wide linear range from 0.1 to 175μM, with a detection limit of 39nM, and it is free from common interferences such as uric acid and ascorbic acid. Abstract: A highly stable and sensitive electrochemical sensor for the detection of dopamine (DA) was developed based on the electrodeposited conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), doped with pure carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The PEDOT/CNT nanocomposite was deposited on the carbon paste electrode through the electrochemical polymerization of PEDOT in the presence of CNTs as the only dopant. The electrochemical properties of the PEDOT/CNT film on the carbon paste electrode were characterized using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The PEDOT/CNT film showed high electrocatalytic activity toward the redox reaction of DA, and the redox peak current of DA at the PEDOT/CNT modified electrode was related to the DA concentration. A sensitive DA sensor was developed based on this excellent catalytic property, with a linear range from 0.1 to 20μM, and a detection limit of 20nM. This sensor is easy to fabricate, very stable and reusable, and free of interference from ascorbic acid (present at a concentration 1000 times higher than that of DA), all of which makes it a promising technology for DA sensing. Abstract: A sensitive amperometric sensor for the selective detection of hydroquinone in cosmetics was developed based on the excellent electrocatalytic property of carbon nanotube (CNT) doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) conducting polymer toward the oxidation of hydroquinone. The oxidation potential of hydroquinone on the PEDOT/CNT modified carbon paste electrode was much lower than that on the bare electrode, and the charge transfer rate constant for the oxidation of hydroquinone was significantly increased from 0.45 to 1.84s−1 after the modification with PEDOT/CNT. Under optimal conditions, the differential pulse voltammetry current of the sensor was linear with hydroquinone concentration across a 1.1–125μM range and associated with a detection limit of 0.3μM. Significantly, the detection limit is comparable or better than many current electrochemical hydroquinone assays, and the sensor is potentially much cheaper and easier for fabrication. The sensor was capable not only of comfortably quantifying hydroquinone in the presence of common interferences but also doing this in real cosmetics samples with satisfying accuracy. An electrochemical sensor for paracetamol is described that consists of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) that was modified with the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with MnO2 nanoflowers. The hydrothermally synthesized MnO2 nanoflowers possess a large surface area and can be doped into PEDOT through electrochemical deposition to form a conducting polymer nanocomposite. The nanoflowers are shown to be uniformly distributed within the nanocomposite as revealed by elemental mapping analysis. The nanocomposite displays excellent catalytic activity toward the electrochemical oxidation of paracetamol. The modified GCE, best operated at a working potential of around 0.37 V (vs. SCE) has a linear response in 0.06 to 435 μM paracetamol concentration range and a very low limit of detection (31 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3). The sensor exhibits excellent reproducibility and stability, and satisfying accuracy for paracetamol detection in pharmaceutical samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Free-standing NG/PEDOT hybrids film with better hydrophilicity, conductivity, and good electrochemical capacitance is gained. • The hybrids film serves as electroactive material, current collector, and mechanical support simultaneously for fabricating flexible supercapacitor. • The supercapacitor shows high specific capacitance, flexibility, and outstanding stability. • The NG/PEDOT hybrids-based sensor presents high sensitivity for dopamine detection. Nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) materials are highly desired for supercapacitors and sensors. Herein, we report nitrogen-doped graphene and conducting polymer PEDOT hybrids for the study of flexible supercapacitor and electrochemical sensor. Free-standing NG/PEDOT hybrids film electrodes were prepared by a flow-directed self-assembly strategy. Nitrogen doping validly exploit graphene's utilization by preventing graphene sheets' stacking and introducing pseudocapacitance. The PEDOT component not only improves the hybrids' conductivity and decreases NG's stacking, but also plays the role of binders to induce the hybrids to be free-standing film through simple vacuum filtration. The doping of nitrogen atoms and PEDOT endow the hybrids film with superior hydrophilicity, high conductivity, as well as good electrochemical capacitance (536 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1). The hybrids films are simultaneously used as electrode materials, current collector, and mechanical support to fabricate flexible supercapacitor with the specific capacitance of 206 F g−1 at 0.25 A g−1. Moreover, the NG/PEDOT hybrids present giant potential in the electrochemical sensor area on account of its superior catalytic properties, hydrophilicity, and conductivity. The NG/PEDOT hybrids modified electrode presents high sensitivity (0.9 μA mM−1 cm−2), with a linear range from 0.2 μM to 90 μM, a detection limit of 54 nM (S/N=3) for dopamine detection.
