INTRODUCCIÓN El sobrepeso adulto e infantil se han convertido en una pandemia en las últimas décadas, en particular en los países occidentales. Esta tesis tiene dos objetivos principales: En primer lugar confirmar como las actitudes parentales influyen en sus comportamientos y estos en los de los hijos y como están relacionados con el sobrepeso. En segundo lugar averiguar que mensajes son más eficientes a la hora de convencer a los padres de la importancia de favorecer hábitos saludables para sus hijos. En concreto como incrementar el consumo de frutas y verduras. Realizamos dos estudios. En el estudio 1 abordamos los antecedentes de sobrepeso infantil y se propone un modelo. Nos centraremos en todas aquellas conductas de niños realizadas en casa y con la influencia parental: dormir, horas de TV vistas y cenas realizadas en casa. Proponemos un modelo y unas hipótesis. Las actitudes parentales influyen en sus comportamientos y estos en los comportamientos infantiles y esto en su sobrepeso. Metodología. Se utilizó una encuesta a los padres con un diseño transversal. Los encuestados fueron los padres de los niños que asisten a la escuela primaria en la Región de Murcia. Tuvieron que responder acerca de sus actitudes y comportamientos hacia hábitos saludables y los de su hijo/a mayor. Se pidió peso y altura de padre o madre y niño Resultados estudio 1. Las actitudes parentales positivas respecto al sueño y las normas familiares influyen en las horas que duerme el niño. Cuanto más duerme menos sobrepeso tiene. Las actitudes parentales positivas hacia la TV hacen que haya más televisiones en casa este factor incrementa las horas que ve el niño la TV. Cuanto más TV ve el niño más sobrepeso tiene. Las actitudes positivas respecto a dar de comer al hijo influyen en que haya un ambiente alimentario sano en casa, este influye en lo sano que come el hijo, cuanto más sano come el hijo menos sobrepeso tiene. ESTUDIO 2 Nuestro objetivo es encontrar un mensaje persuasivo que aumenta las intenciones de los padres de dar una alimentación más sana a sus hijos. Proponemos un modelo en cual la características de la persona que presenta el mensaje experto/atractivo y el tono del mensaje positivo/negativo y/o emocional/racional tendrán una influencia significativa en la intención parental de incrementar las frutas y verduras que los padres dan a sus hijos. Metodología. Se realiza un diseño experimental 2 (experto vs. atractivo) x 2 (mensaje: emocional vs racional) x 2 (mensaje: positivo vs negativo) entre sujetos. Cada grupo de padres fue expuesto a un anuncio diferente combinando las variables independientes. En total teníamos 8 condiciones experimentales. Un cuestionario auto administrado fue enviado a 1463 direcciones de correo recolectadas de estudio 1. Se abrieron 679 emails de los enviados y el 20% (290 padres) hace clic a través del enlace y completa el cuestionario. Resultados. En términos de incrementar las frutas y verduras que se dan a los hijo encontramos que, los anuncios respaldados por expertos fueron más eficaces que los respaldados por personajes atractivos. Los anuncios con tono positivo fueron más eficaces que los anuncios con tono negativo. Finalmente el tono emocional fue más persuasivo que el racional. Además, se encontró un efecto de interacción altamente significativa entre el tipo de persona que respalda el mensaje y el enfoque (emocional / racional) del mensaje. Esto significa que cuando un mensaje racional es respaldado por una persona atractiva la intención parental de incrementar las frutas y verduras que dan a sus hijos es significativamente menor The overweight adults and children have become a pandemic in recent decades, particularly in Western countries. This dissertation has two main objectives: Firstly to confirm how parental attitudes influence their behaviors and how those behaviors have and influence on their children’s behaviors which may lead to overweight. Secondly to find which messages are more efficient in persuading parents of the importance of promoting children’s healthy habits. Specifically we want to find how to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables. We conducted two studies. In Study 1 we address the antecedents of childhood overweight and a model is proposed. We focus on all those behaviors that children perform at home and can have a parental influence: sleeping, hours of TV watching and dinner at home. We propose a model and some hypotheses. Parental attitudes influence their own behaviors and these behaviors moderate their children’s behaviors witch build their weight. Methodology. A survey of parents was used. Respondents were parents of children attending primary school in the region of Murcia. They had to answer about their attitudes and behaviors toward healthy habits and their eldest child at school. Weight and height of parent and child is asked Study1 results. Positive parental attitudes toward sleep and family norms influence the child sleeping hours. Children who sleep more have less chances of being overweight. Positive parental attitudes toward TV mean homes with more TV sets. This factor increases the hours the child watches TV. Childhood overweight increases with child TV watching. Positive parental attitudes to feed their children influence if there is a healthy food environment at home, this fact influences what child healthy eating habits. These habits lower the chances of the child to be overweight. Study 2. The goal is to find a persuasive message that increases the parental intentions to provide healthier food to their children. We propose a model in which the characteristics of the ad endorser (expert / attractive) and tone of the message (positive / negative) and / or (emotional / rational) will have a significant influence on the parental intention to give more the fruits and vegetables to their children. Methodology. A between subjects experimental design is conducted. 2 (message: positive vs negative) x 2 (expert vs. appeal) x 2 (emotional vs. rational message). Each group of parents was exposed to a different ad combining the independent variables. In total we had 8 experimental conditions. A self-administered questionnaire was sent to 1463 email addresses collected from study of 1. A total 290 parents click through the link and completed the questionnaire. Results. In terms of increasing parental intentions to give more fruits and vegetables to their children we found that expert endorsers were more effective than attractive endorsers. Ads with positive framing were more effective than ads with negative tone. Finally the emotional framing was more persuasive than the rational one. In addition, a highly significant interaction effect between the type of endorser who supports the message (expert / attractive) and the (emotional / rational) framing was found. This means that when a rational message is backed by an attractive endorser parental intention to increase the fruits and vegetables given their children is significantly lower than in other situations.
