Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for 0 νββ decay that has been able to reach the one-tonne mass scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK and in April 2021 released its 3 rd result of the search for 0 νββ, corresponding to a tonne-year of TeO 2 exposure. This is the largest amount of data ever acquired with a solid state detector and the most sensitive measurement of 0 νββ decay in 130Te ever conducted. We present the current status of CUORE search for 0 νββ with the updated statistics of one tonne-yr. We finally give an update of the CUORE background model and the measurement of the 130Te 2 νββ decay half-life and decay to excited states of 130Xe , studies performed using an exposure of 300.7 kg yr.

Abstract

The CUORE experiment is a ton-scale array of TeO 2 cryogenic bolometers located at the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), in Italy. The CUORE detector consists of 988 crystals operated as source and detector at a base temperature of ∼ 10 mK. Such cryogenic temperature is reached and maintained by means of a custom built cryogen-free dilution cryostat, designed with the aim of minimizing the vibrational noise and the environmental radioactivity. The primary goal of CUORE is the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te , but thanks to its large target mass and ultra-low background it is suitable for the study of other rare processes as well, such as the neutrinoless double beta decay of 128Te. This tellurium isotope is an attractive candidate for the search of this process, due to its high natural isotopic abundance of 31.75%. The transition energy at (866.7 ± 0.7) keV lies in a highly populated region of the energy spectrum, dominated by the contribution of the two-neutrino double beta decay of 130Te. As the first ton-scale infrastructure operating cryogenic TeO 2 bolometers in stable conditions, CUORE is able to achieve a factor > 10 higher sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay of this isotope with respect to past direct experiments.

Abstract

We present the application of a simplified thermal model for the description of the response function of low-temperature calorimeters consisting of $$\hbox {TeO}_2$$ TeO 2 crystals read-out by NTD thermistors operated at temperatures $$T \sim 10$$ T ∼ 10 mK. Relying on both the analysis of the NTD load curves (from which we measured the main thermal conductances of the system) (Biassoni et al. in J Low Temp Phys 206:80–96, 2022) and on the analysis of the shape of thermal pulses acquired at different temperatures, we identified and quantified the physical parameters that determine the characteristic time constants of the pulses. In particular, we identified three different contributions to the heat capacity of the detector: the crystal phonon system (scaling as $$T^3$$ T 3 ), the NTD electron system (scaling as T) and a term related to the metalization process of the NTD electrodes (scaling as $$T^{-2}$$ T - 2 ).

Abstract

In this paper, we present the application of a simplified thermal model in order to extract some of the fundamental parameters needed to understand the response function of low-temperature calorimeters consisting of TeO 2 crystals read-out by neutron transmutation doped (NTD) thermistors operated at temperatures T∼ 10 mK. To this aim, four detectors were hosted in two different holders, one made of copper and the other made of Stratasys VeroClear TM, a 3D-printed plastic material very similar to acrylic. The static characterization of the detectors through the analysis of their load curves at different temperatures, guided by the thermal model, enabled the identification of the main thermal link to the heat sink of the two systems: the glue between the crystal and the copper frame (scaling as T3) for the detectors in the copper holder, and the NTD gold read-out wires (scaling as T2.5) for the detectors in the plastic holder. As a subdominant contribution, we could also extract the electron–phonon decoupling characteristic of our NTDs, described by a thermal conductance scaling as T4.
