We present results of a Raman scattering study of the Kagome ferromagnet Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, with a focus on electronic and phononic excitations and their interplay. In addition, the electronic band structure is analyzed theoretically, enabling a semi-quantitative explanation of the spectra. A prominent feature in the electronic spectra is a redistribution of spectral weight from low to high energies starting at the Curie temperature Tc. The Raman intensity is suppressed below approximately 1000cm$^{-1}$ and increases above to a peak at 2000 cm$^{-1}$ in all symmetries. Two Raman active phonon modes are identified in A$_{1g}$ and E$_g$ symmetry. The A$_{1g}$ phonon couples strongly to the electronic continuum as indicated by the asymmetric Fano-type line shape. The asymmetry depends non-monotonically on temperature and is maximal close to the magnetic transition. In the limit $T\to 0$ the phonon is nearly symmetric. The evolution of the coupling strength and the electronic continuum as a function of temperature is attributed to a band splitting induced by the ferromagnetic phase transition which substantially reduces the DOS towards $T=0$. The $3d_{z^2}$ electrons of the Co atoms in the crystal field modulated by the A$_{1g}$ phonon are implied to be a critical component contributing to the strong electron-phonon coupling of that phonon. These results allow a comprehensive understanding of the bulk band structure evolution as a function of temperature in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, offering key insights for further studies of the driving force behind the long-range magnetic order and novel topological states in this compound., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We report the magneto-transport measurements of thin film devices of the topological Weyl semimetal WTe2 with the applied current along and vertical to the in-plane directions. The device is composed of a Van der Waals thin film of WTe2 sandwiched between top and bottom Au electrodes.At low temperatures, we found a large unsaturated in-plane magnetoresistance and a saturated out-of-plane magnetoresistance when the external magnetic fields are applied perpendicular to the plane. By analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, one oscillation peak is found in the out-of-plane magnetoresistance, in contrast to four oscillation peaks in the in-plane magnetoresistance.Our work provides new insight into the origin of the unsaturated magnetoresistance in WTe2 and may inspire non-planar engineering to reach higher integration in spintronics.

Excitonic insulators are usually considered to form via the condensation of a soft charge mode of bound electron-hole pairs. This, however, presumes that the soft exciton is of spin-singlet character. Early theoretical considerations have also predicted a very distinct scenario, in which the condensation of magnetic excitons results in an antiferromagnetic excitonic insulator state. Here we report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of Sr3Ir2O7. By isolating the longitudinal component of the spectra, we identify a magnetic mode that is well-defined at the magnetic and structural Brillouin zone centers, but which merges with the electronic continuum in between these high-symmetry points and which decays upon heating concurrent with a decrease in the material's resistivity. We show that a bilayer Hubbard model, in which electron-hole pairs are bound by exchange interactions, consistently explains all the electronic and magnetic properties of Sr3Ir2O7 indicating that this material is a realization of the long-predicted antiferromagnetic excitonic insulators phase., Comment: accepted in Nature Communications; 6 pages main materials

HoSbTe was predicted to be a weak topological insulator, whose spin-orbit coupling (SOC) gaps are reported to be as large as hundreds of meV. Utilizing infrared spectroscopy, we find that the compound is of metallic nature from 350 K down to 10 K. Particularly, both of its itinerant carrier density and scattering rate are demonstrated to decrease with temperature cooling, which is responsible for the appearance of a broad hump feature in the temperature dependent resistivity around 200 K. More importantly, we reveal the appearance of a charge density wave (CDW) gap in addition to the SOC related gap. The energy scale of the CDW gap is identified to be 364 meV at 10 K, which shift to 252 meV at 350 K. The coexistence of CDW and SOC gaps in the same compound paves a new avenue to explore more intriguing physics.

As exemplified by the growing interest in the quantum anomalous Hall effect, the research on topology as an organizing principle of quantum matter is greatly enriched from the interplay with magnetism. In this vein, we present a combined electrical and thermoelectrical transport study on the magnetic Weyl semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$. Unconventional contribution to the anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst effects were observed both above and below the magnetic transition temperature of EuCd$_2$As$_2$, indicating the existence of significant Berry curvature. EuCd$_2$As$_2$ represents a rare case in which this unconventional transverse transport emerges both above and below the magnetic transition temperature in the same material. The transport properties evolve with temperature and field in the antiferromagnetic phase in a different manner than in the paramagnetic phase, suggesting different mechanisms to their origin. Our results indicate EuCd$_2$As$_2$ is a fertile playground for investigating the interplay between magnetism and topology, and potentially a plethora of topologically nontrivial phases rooted in this interplay.

Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles can arise in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) in which the energy bands are nondegenerate, resulting from inversion or time-reversal symmetry breaking. Nevertheless, experimental evidence for magnetically induced WSMs is scarce. Here, using photoemission spectroscopy, we observe that the degeneracy of Bloch bands is already lifted in the paramagnetic phase of EuCd$_2$As$_2$. We attribute this effect to the itinerant electrons experiencing quasistatic and quasi-long-range ferromagnetic fluctuations. Moreover, the spin nondegenerate band structure harbors a pair of ideal Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. Hence, we show that long-range magnetic order and the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry are not an essential requirement for WSM states in centrosymmetric systems, and that WSM states can emerge in a wider range of condensed-matter systems than previously thought., Comment: 34 pages,12 figures

We report an experimental study of the magnetic order and electronic structure and transport of the layered pnictide EuMnSb$_2$, performed using neutron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and magnetotransport measurements. We find that the Eu and Mn sublattices display antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Eu} = 21(1)$ K and $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Mn} = 350(2)$ K respectively. The former can be described by an A-type AFM structure with the Eu spins aligned along the $c$ axis (an in-plane direction), whereas the latter has a C-type AFM structure with Mn moments along the $a$--axis (perpendicular to the layers). The ARPES spectra reveal Dirac-like linearly dispersing bands near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, our magnetotransport measurements show strongly anisotropic magnetoresistance, and indicate that the Eu sublattice is intimately coupled to conduction electron states near the Dirac point.

Topological semimetals with different types of band crossings provide a rich platform to realize novel fermionic excitations, known as topological fermions. In particular, some fermionic excitations can be direct analogues of elementary particles in quantum field theory when both obey the same laws of physics in the low-energy limit. Examples include Dirac and Weyl fermions, whose solid-state realizations have provided new insights into long-sought phenomena in high-energy physics. Recently, theorists predicted new types of fermionic excitations in condensed-matter systems without any high-energy counterpart, and their existence is protected by crystalline symmetries. By studying the topology of the electronic structure in PdBiSe using density functional theory calculations and bulk-sensitive soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate a coexistence of four different types of topological fermions: Weyl, Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl, double class-II three-component, and charge-2 fourfold fermions. Our discovery provides a remarkable platform to realize multiple novel fermions in a single solid, charting the way forward to studies of their potentially exotic properties as well as their interplay.

Although superconductivity in the vicinity of antiferromagnetic (AFM) instability has been extensively explored in the last three decades or so, superconductivity in compounds with a background of ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations is still rare. We report 75As nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements on the A2Cr3As3 family, which is the first group of Cr-based superconductors at ambient pressure, with A being alkali elements. From the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1), we find that by changing A in the order of A=Na, Na0.75K0.25, K, and Rb, the system is tuned to approach a FM quantum critical point (QCP). This may be ascribed to the Cr2-As2-Cr2 bond angle that decreases towards 90 degrees, which enhances the FM interaction via the Cr2-As2-Cr2 path. Upon moving away from the QCP, the superconducting transition temperature Tsc increases progressively up to 8.0 K in Na2Cr3As3, which is in sharp contrast to the AFM case where Tsc usually shows a maximum around a QCP. The 1/T1 decreases rapidly below Tsc with no Hebel-Slichter peak, and ubiquitously follows a T5 variation below a characteristic temperature T*=0.6 Tsc, which indicates the existence of point nodes in the superconducting gap function commonly in the family. These results suggest that the A2Cr3As3 family is a possible solid-state analog of superfluid 3He., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Connate topological superconductor (TSC) combines topological surface states with nodeless superconductivity in a single material, achieving effective $p$-wave pairing without interface complication. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and $in$-$situ$ molecular beam epitaxy, we studied the momentum-resolved superconductivity in $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ film. We found that the superconducting gap of topological surface state ($\Delta_{TSS} \sim$ 3.8 meV) is anomalously enhanced from its bulk value ($\Delta_b \sim$ 0.8 meV). The ratio of $2\Delta_{TSS}/k_BT_c \sim14.2$, is substantially larger than the BCS value. By measuring $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ bulk single crystal as a comparison, we clearly observed the upward-shift of chemical potential in the film. In addition, a concomitant increasing of surface weight on the topological surface state was revealed by our first principle calculation, suggesting that the Dirac-fermion-mediated parity mixing may cause this anomalous superconducting enhancement. Our results establish $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ film as a unique case of connate TSCs with a highly enhanced topological superconducting gap, which may stabilize Majorana zero modes at a higher temperature., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

The n-type HgCr2Se4 exhibits a sharp semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) in resistivity accompanying the ferromagnetic order at TC = 106 K. Here, we investigate the effects of pressure and magnetic field on the concomitant SMT and ferromagnetic order by measuring resistivity, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, as well as single-crystal neutron diffraction under various pressures up to 8 GPa and magnetic fields up to 8 T. Our results demonstrate that the ferromagnetic metallic ground state of n-type HgCr2Se4 is destabilized and gradually replaced by an antiferromagnetic, most likely a spiral magnetic, and insulating ground state upon the application of high pressure. On the other hand, the application of external magnetic fields can restore the ferromagnetic metallic state again at high pressures, resulting in a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) as high as ~ 3 * 10^11 % under 5 T and 2 K at 4 GPa. The present study demonstrates that n-type HgCr2Se4 is located at a peculiar critical point where the balance of competion between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions can be easily tipped by the external stimuli, providing a new platform for achieving CMR in a single-valent system., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The similarities to cuprates make iridates an interesting potential platform for investigating superconductivity. Equally attractive are their puzzling complex intrinsic interactions. Here, we report an ultrafast optical spectroscopy investigation of a coherent phonon mode in Sr3Ir2O7, a bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite iridate. An anomaly in the A1g optical phonon ({\nu} = 4.4 THz) is unambiguously observed below the N\'eel temperature (TN), which we attribute to pseudospin-lattice coupling (PLC). Significantly, we find that PLC is the dominant interaction at low temperature, and we directly measure the PLC coefficient to be {\lambda} = 150 +/- 20 cm-1, which is two orders of magnitude higher than that in manganites (< 2.4 cm-1) and comparable to that in CuO (50 cm-1, the strongest PLC or spin-lattice coupling (SLC) previously known). Moreover, we find that the strong PLC induces an anisotropic negative thermal expansion. Our findings highlight the key role of PLC in iridates and uncovers another intriguing similarity to cuprates.

Weyl semimetals exhibit exceptional quantum electronic transport due to the presence of topologically-protected band crossings called Weyl nodes. The nodes come in pairs with opposite chirality, but their number and location in momentum space is otherwise material specific. Following the initial discoveries there is now a need for better material realizations, ideally comprising a single pair of Weyl nodes located at or very close to the Fermi level and in an energy window free from other overlapping bands. Here we propose the layered intermetallic EuCd$_2$As$_2$ to be such a system. We show that Weyl nodes in EuCd$_2$As$_2$ are magnetically-induced via exchange coupling, emerging when the Eu spins are aligned by a small external magnetic field. The identification of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ as a model magnetic Weyl semimetal, evidenced here by ab initio calculations, photoemission spectroscopy, quantum oscillations and anomalous Hall transport measurements, opens the door to fundamental tests of Weyl physics.

We present AC and DC magnetometry, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of the pyrochlore osmate Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$. We observe a non-zero effective moment governed by $\sqrt{f}\mu_{\rm{eff}} = 0.417(1)\,\mu_{\rm{B}}$ where $f$ is the fraction of Os sites which exhibit a spin, and spin freezing at temperature $T_{\rm f} \simeq 5\,$K, consistent with previous results. The field dependence of magnetisation data shows that the paramagnetic moment is most likely due to large moments $\mu_{\rm eff} \simeq 3\,\mu_{\rm B}$ on only a small fraction $f \simeq 0.02$ of Os sites. Comparison of single-ion energy level calculations with the RIXS data yields a non-magnetic $J_{\rm eff} = 0$ ground state on the Os$^{4+}$ sites. The spin-orbit interaction, Hund's coupling and trigonal distortion of OsO$_{6}$ octahedra are all important in modelling the experimentally observed spectra. We are able to rule out impurity effects, leaving disorder-related effects such as oxygen non-stoichiometry or site interchange between Os and Y ions as the most plausible explanation for the magnetic response in this material.

We use time-domain terahertz spectroscopy to measure the low energy conductivity and magnons in RuCl$_3$ under external magnetic field. At zero field, an oscillation with a frequency of 0.62 THz is clearly observed in time-domain spectrum below T$_N$, which is identified as a magnon excitation in the magnetic order state. The magnon excitation is not affected by the external magnetic field $\textbf{H}_{DC}$ when it is applied along the c-axis, but is clearly suppressed when $\textbf{H}_{DC}$ is applied within ab plane. More interestingly, when the magnetic component of THz wave $\textbf{h}(t)$ is perpendicular to the applied in-plane magnetic field, we observe another coherent oscillation at slightly higher energy scale at the field above 2 T, which is eventually suppressed for $H_{DC}>$5 T. The measurement seems to indicate that the in-plane magnetic field can lift the degeneracy of two branches of low energy magnons at $\Gamma$ point. The low energy optical conductivity calculated from the measured transmission spectrum is dominated by a broad continuum contribution, which is not affected by changing either temperature or external magnetic field. The continuum is likely to be related to the fractional spin excitation due to dominated Kitaev interaction in the material., Comment: 6 pages

We use resonant elastic x-ray scattering to determine the evolution of magnetic order in EuCd$_2$As$_2$ below $T_\textrm{N}=9.5$\,K, as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. We find an A-type antiferromagneticstructure with in-plane magnetic moments, and observe dramatic magnetoresistive effects associated with field-induced changes in the magnetic structure and domain populations. Our \textit{ab initio} electronic structure calculations indicate that the Dirac dispersion found in the nonmagnetic Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ is also present in EuCd$_2$As$_2$, but is gapped for $T < T_\textrm{N}$ due to the breaking of $C_3$ symmetry by the magnetic structure., Comment: Supplemental information attached to preprint

The electronic ground state of Ca3LiOsO6 was recently considered within an intermediate coupling regime that revealed J=3/2 spin-orbit entangled magnetic moments. Through inelastic neutron scattering and density functional theory we investigate the magnetic interactions and probe how the magnetism is influenced by the change in hierarchy of interactions as we move from Ca3LiOsO6 (5d3) to Ca3LiRuO6 (4d3). An alteration of the spin-gap and ordered local moment is observed, however the magnetic structure, Neel temperature and exchange interactions are unaltered. To explain this behavior it is necessary to include both spin-orbit coupling and hybridization, indicating the importance of an intermediate coupling approach when describing 5$d$ oxides.

NaOsO$_{\text{3}}$ undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 410 K, concomitant with the onset of antiferromagnetic order. The excitation spectra have been investigated through the MIT by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Os L$_{\text{3}}$ edge. Low resolution ($\Delta E \sim$ 300 meV) measurements over a wide range of energies reveal that local electronic excitations do not change appreciably through the MIT. This is consistent with a picture in which structural distortions do not drive the MIT. In contrast, high resolution ($\Delta E \sim $ 56 meV) measurements show that the well-defined, low energy magnons in the insulating state weaken and dampen upon approaching the metallic state. Concomitantly, a broad continuum of excitations develops which is well described by the magnetic fluctuations of a nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid. By revealing the continuous evolution of the magnetic quasiparticle spectrum as it changes its character from itinerant to localized, our results provide unprecedented insight into the nature of the MIT in \naoso. In particular, the presence of weak correlations in the paramagnetic phase implies a degree of departure from the ideal Slater limit., Comment: Joint submission with Physical Review Letters [Phys. NaOsO3 hosts a rare manifestation of a metal-insulator transition driven by magnetic correlations, placing the magnetic exchange interactions in a central role. We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to directly probe these magnetic exchange interactions. A dispersive and strongly gapped (58 meV) excitation is observed indicating appreciable spin-orbit coupling in this 5d3 system. The excitation is well described within a minimal model Hamiltonian with strong anisotropy and Heisenberg exchange (J1=J2=13.9 meV). The observed behavior places NaOsO3 on the boundary between localized and itinerant magnetism.

We performed a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the electronic band structure of LaOFeAs single crystals. We found that samples cleaved at low temperature show an unstable and highly complicated band structure, whereas samples cleaved at high temperature exhibit a stable and clearer electronic structure. Using \emph{in-situ} surface doping with K and supported by first-principles calculations, we identify both surface and bulk bands. We present anisotropic transport and optical spectroscopy studies on EuCd_2As_2. The measurements reveal that EuCd_2As_2 is a low carrier density semimetal with moderate anisotropic resistivity ratio. The charge carriers experience very strong scattering from Eu magnetic moments, resulting in a Kondo-like increase of resistivity at low temperature. Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature at $T_N$= 9.5 K, the resistivity drops sharply due to the reduced scattering from the ordered Eu moments. Nevertheless, the anisotropic ratio of $\rho_c/\rho_{ab}$ keeps increasing, suggesting that the antiferromagnetic coupling is along the c-axis. The optical spectroscopy measurement further reveals, besides an overdamped reflectance plasma edge at low energy, a strong coupling between phonon and electronic continuum. Our study suggests that EuCd_2As_2 is a promising candidate displaying intriguing interplay among charge, magnetism and the underlying crystal lattice., Comment: 6 pages

We performed a Raman scattering study of Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O. We identified a symmetry breaking structural transition at around $T_s = 150$ K, which matches a large bump in the electrical resistivity. Several new peaks are detected below that transition. Combined with first-principles calculations, our polarization-dependent measurements suggest a charge instability driven lattice distortion along one of the Ti-O bonds that breaks the 4-fold symmetry and more than doubles the unit cell., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We systematically measured the Hall effect in the extremely large magnetoresistance semimetal WTe$_2$. By carefully fitting the Hall resistivity to a two-band model, the temperature dependencies of the carrier density and mobility for both electron- and hole-type carriers were determined. We observed a sudden increase of the hole density below $\sim$160~K, which is likely associated with the temperature-induced Lifshitz transition reported by a previous photoemission study. In addition, a more pronounced reduction in electron density occurs below 50~K, giving rise to comparable electron and hole densities at low temperature. Our observations indicate a possible electronic structure change below 50~K, which might be the direct driving force of the electron-hole ``compensation'' and the extremely large magnetoresistance as well. The newly discovered superconductors A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs), with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure have attracted considerable interest. The crystal structure consists of double-walled tubes of [Cr3As3]^(2-) that extend along the c-axis. Previously we reported measurements of the change in London penetration depth of polycrystalline samples of K2Cr3As3 using a tunnel diode oscillator based technique, which show a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures, giving evidence for line nodes in the superconducting gap. Here we report similar measurements of the penetration depth for polycrystalline Rb2Cr3As3 and several single crystals of K2Cr3As3, prepared by two different research groups. The single crystal measurements show similar behavior to polycrystalline samples down to 0.9-1.2 K, where a downturn is observed in the frequency shift for all single crystal samples. These results give further evidence for nodal superconductivity in K2Cr3As3, which indicates that the superconducting pairing state is unconventional. The different low temperature behavior observed in samples which have deteriorated after being exposed to air, emphasises that it is necessary to properly handle the samples prior to being measured because the A2Cr3As3 compounds are extremely air sensitive and evidence for nodal superconductivity from penetration depth measurements is only observed in the samples which display a sharp superconducting transition. Ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy is used to track carrier dynamics in the large magnetoresistance material WTe$_{2}$. Our experiments reveal a fast relaxation process occurring on a sub-picosecond time scale that is caused by electron-phonon thermalization, allowing us to extract the electron-phonon coupling constant. An additional slower relaxation process, occurring on a time scale of $\sim$5-15 picoseconds, is attributed to phonon-assisted electron-hole recombination. As the temperature decreases from 300 K, the timescale governing this process increases due to the reduction of the phonon population. However, below $\sim$50 K, an unusual decrease of the recombination time sets in, most likely due to a change in the electronic structure that has been linked to the large magnetoresistance observed in this material., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We performed a polarized Raman scattering study of quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. We detect two A$_1^\prime$ phonons and three E$^\prime$ phonons. One of the A$_1^\prime$ modes exhibits a nearly temperature-independent Fano lineshape. Based on our first-principles calculations, we ascribe this mode to the in-phase vibrations of Cr atoms within one layer. This observation strongly suggests that the magnetic fluctuations in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ are coupled to the electronic structure \emph{via} the lattice., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

RuP single crystals of MnP-type orthorhombic structure were synthesized by the Sn flux method. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the compound experiences two structural phase transitions, which are further confirmed by enormous anomalies shown in temperature-dependent resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Particularly, the resistivity drops monotonically upon temperature cooling below the second transition, indicating that the material shows metallic behavior, in sharp contrast with the insulating ground state of polycrystalline samples. Optical conductivity measurements were also performed in order to unravel the mechanism of these two transitions. The measurement revealed a sudden reconstruction of band structure over a broad energy scale and a significant removal of conducting carriers below the first phase transition, while a charge-density-wave-like energy gap opens below the second phase transition., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Enhanced coupling of material properties offers new fundamental insights and routes to multifunctional devices. In this context 5d oxides provide new paradigms of cooperative interactions driving novel emergent behavior. This is exemplified in 5d osmates that host a metal-insulator transition (MIT) driven by magnetic order. Here we consider the most robust case, the 5d perovskite NaOsO3, and reveal a giant coupling between spin and phonon through a frequency shift of {\Delta}{\omega}=40 cm-1, the largest measured in any material. We identify the dominant octahedral breathing mode and show isosymmetry with spin ordering which induces dynamic charge disproportionation that sheds new light on the MIT. The occurrence of the dramatic spin-phonon-electronic coupling in NaOsO3 is due to a property common to all 5d materials: the large spatial extent of the 5d ion. This allows magnetism to couple to phonons on an unprecedented scale and consequently offers multiple new routes to enhanced coupled phenomena.

We report the crystal growth of a new compound, Yb3Os4Ge13, by using a Bi-flux method. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that it crystallizes in the quasi-skutterudite-type caged structure with a cubic space group of Pm-3n (No. 223). Magnetic measurements reveal almost fully localized Yb f-moments above 120 K. The resistivity exhibits a crossover from metallic to insulating behavior with a logarithmic increase below ~ 40 K. The specific heat coefficient shows a rapid upturn below ~5 K and exceeds 2 J mol-1 K-2 at 2 K. Our experimental analysis and electronic band structure calculations demonstrate that Yb3Os4Ge13 exhibits the Kondo effect due to strong hybridization of the localized Yb f-moments with the p-electrons of the surrounding Ge-cages., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We report an optical spectroscopy study on the single crystal of Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O, a sister compound of superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O. The study reveals unexpectedly two density wave phase transitions. The first transition at 320 K results in the formation of a large energy gap and removes most part of the Fermi surfaces. But the compound remains metallic with residual itinerant carriers. Below 42 K, another density wave phase transition with smaller energy gap scale occurs and drives the compound into semiconducting ground state. We report powder and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements of the magnetic order in AMnBi2 (A = Sr and Ca), two layered manganese pnictides with anisotropic Dirac fermions on a Bi square net. Both materials are found to order at TN approx 300 K in k = 0 antiferromagnetic structures, with ordered Mn moments at T = 10 K of approximately 3.8 muB aligned along the c axis. The magnetic structures are Neel-type within the Mn--Bi layers but the inter-layer ordering is different, being antiferromagnetic in SrMnBi2 and ferromagnetic in CaMnBi2. This allows a mean-field coupling of the magnetic order to Bi electrons in CaMnBi2 but not in SrMnBi2. We find clear evidence that magnetic order influences electrical transport. First principles calculations explain the experimental observations and suggest that the mechanism for different inter-layer ordering in the two compounds is the competition between the anteiferromagnetic superexchange and ferromagnetic double exchange carried by itinerant Bi electrons., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review B. We performed optical spectroscopy measurement on single crystals of Na$_2$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O, which is the parent compound for the newly discovered Ti-based superconductors. The study reveals significant spectral change across the phase transition at 114 K and formation of a density-wave type energy gap. The opening of the gap removes most part of the free carrier spectral weight and causes a dramatic reduction of the carrier scattering rate. The ratio of 2$\Delta/k_BT_s\approx$14 is considerably larger than the mean-field value based on the weak-coupling BCS theory. We present the specific heat, magnetization, optical spectroscopy measurements and the firstprinciple calculations on the Weberite structure Ca2Os2O7 single crystal/polycrystalline sample. The Ca2Os2O7 shows a Curie-Weiss nature at high temperature and goes into a ferrimagnetic insulating state at 327 K on cooling. A \lambda-like peak is observed at 327 K in the specific heat implying a second-order phase transition. The vanishing electronic specific heat at low temperature suggests a full energy gap. At high temperature above the transition, small amount of itinerant carriers with short life time \tau are observed, which is gapped at 20 K with a direct gap of 0:24 eV . Our first principle calculations indicate that the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) correlation with intermediate Coulomb repulsion U could effectively split Os(4b) t2g bands and push them away from Fermi level(EF). On the other hand, a non-collinear magnetic interaction is needed to push the Os(4c) bands away from EF, which could be induced by Os(4c)-Os(4c) frustration. Therefore, AFM correlation, Coulomb repulsion U and non-collinear interaction all play important roles for the insulating ground state in Ca2Os2O7., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We present a neutron and x-ray scattering investigation of Ca$_3$LiOsO$_6$, a material predicted to host magnetic ordering solely through an extended superexchange pathway involving two anions, an interaction mechanism that has undergone relatively little investigation. This contrasts with the ubiquitous superexchange interaction mechanism involving a single anion that has well defined and long standing rules. Despite the apparent 1D nature and triangular units of magnetic osmium ions the onset of magnetic correlations has been observed at a high temperature of 117 K in bulk measurements. We experimentally determine the magnetically ordered structure and show it to be long range and three dimensional. Our results support the model of extended superexchange interaction.

SrPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type structure were synthesized by self-melting technique. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electrical resistivity, specific heat and optical spectroscopy measurements were conducted to elucidate the properties of SrPt$_2$As$_2$. SrPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals exhibit a superconducting transition at 5.2K, experiencing a structural phase transition well above room temperature (about 455K). The superconducting and structural phase transition temperatures are both reduced by 6% Iridium doping. Both pure SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and the doped single crystals are revealed to be highly metallic with rather high plasma frequencies. In particular, the optical spectroscopy measurement revealed two gap-like suppression features. We elaborated that the one at higher energy scale could be ascribed to the correlation effect, while the other one at lower energy scale is related to the structural phase transition, leading to the removal of a small portion of the Fermi surfaces., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$, a ThCr$_{2}$Si$_{2}$-structure compound, undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at \emph{T$_{N}$}=76K with the magnetic moments being aligned parallel to the \emph{c} axis. Electronic transport measurement reveals that the coupling between conducting carriers and magnetic order in CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is much weaker comparing to the parent compounds of iron pnictide. Applying magnetic field along \emph{c} axis induces two successive spin-flop transitions in its magnetic state. The magnetization saturation behaviors with \emph{\textbf{H}$\parallel$c} and \emph{\textbf{H}$\parallel$ab} at 10K indicate that the antiferromagnetic coupling along \emph{c} direction is very weak. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) is one of the most dramatic manifestations of electron correlations in materials. Various mechanisms producing MITs have been extensively considered, including the Mott (electron localization via Coulomb repulsion), Anderson (localization via disorder) and Peierls (localization via distortion of a periodic 1D lattice). One additional route to a MIT proposed by Slater, in which long-range magnetic order in a three dimensional system drives the MIT, has received relatively little attention. Using neutron and X-ray scattering we show that the MIT in NaOsO3 is coincident with the onset of long-range commensurate three dimensional magnetic order. Whilst candidate materials have been suggested, our experimental methodology allows the first definitive demonstration of the long predicted Slater MIT. We discuss our results in the light of recent reports of a Mott spin-orbit insulating state in other 5d oxides.

We present an optical spectroscopy study on singe crystalline ErTe$_3$, a rare-earth-element tri-telluride which experiences two successive charge density wave (CDW) transitions at T$_{c1}$ = 267 K and T$_{c2}$ = 150 K. Two corresponding gap features, centered at 2770 \cm ($\sim$ 343 meV) and 890 \cm ($\sim$ 110 meV) respectively, are clearly seen in ordered state. A pronounced Drude component, which exists at all measurement temperatures, demonstrates the partial gap character of both CDW orders. About half of the unmodulated Fermi surface (FS) remains in the CDW state at the lowest measurement temperature. $^{75}$As and $^{139}$La NMR and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on Zn-substituted LaFeAsO$_{0.85}$ have been performed to investigate the Zn-impurity effects microscopically. Although superconductivity in LaFeAsO$_{0.85}$ disappears by 3% Zn substitution, we found that NMR/NQR spectra and NMR physical quantities in the normal state are hardly changed, indicating that the crystal structure and electronic states are not modified by Zn substitution. Our results suggest that the suppression of superconductivity by Zn substitution is not due to the change of the normal-state properties, but due to strong non-magnetic pair-breaking effect to superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, This paper was chosen as "Paper of Editors' Suggestion"

A dense phase of a post-layered perovskite Sr3Co2O6 was created by a high-pressure and high-temperature synthetic route and quenched to ambient conditions. The structure of Sr3Co2O6 was determined by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Sr3Co2O6 crystallizes in the K4CdCl6-type structure (an infinite chain-type structure), which is 6% denser than the known, iso-compositional layered perovskite Sr3Co2O7-d (d~1). The K4CdCl6-type Sr3Co2O6 shows complex magnetic behavior reflecting the spin-chain nature as well as the analogue oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6, whose microscopic magnetic origin is still highly debated., Comment: accepted for publication in PRB as a rapid communication

We report an infrared spectroscopy study on K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$, a semiconducting parent compound of the new iron-selenide system. The major spectral features are found to be distinctly different from all other Fe-based superconducting systems. Our measurement revealed two peculiar spectral structures: a double peak structure between 4000-6000 cm$^{-1}$ and abundant phonon modes much more than those expected for a 122 structure. We elaborate that those features could be naturally explained from the blocked antiferromagnetism due to the presence of Fe vacancy ordering as determined by recent neutron diffraction experiments. One of the most important properties of very recently reported FeSe based superconductors is the robustness of their superconductivity under applied magnetic field. The synthesis and control of superconductivity in FeSe based compounds is rather a difficult task. Synthesis and physical property characterization for optimized superconductivity of FeSe1/2Te1/2 at 13 K is reported here. The compound crystallized in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 3.8008(10) and c = 6.0187 (15) A. Magnetization measurements indicated bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 180 Oe. By applying Ginzburg Landau (GL) theory, the Hc2(0) value is estimated to be = 1840 kOe for the 90% of resistive transition. We observed a drastic Tc suppression caused by no more than 3 at.% of Zn doped to the optimized superconductor LaFeAsO0.85 (Tc = 26 K). The electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements suggested that it is likely due to impurity scatterings rather than losing the metallic nature, seeming to support the s+/- pairing model proposed for the Fe pnictide superconductor., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Newly synthesized perovskite NaOsO3 shows Curie-Weiss metallic nature at high temperature and suddenly goes into an antiferromagnetically insulating state at 410 K on cooling. Electronic specific heat at the low temperature limit is absent, indicating that the band gap fully opens. In situ observation in electron microscopy undetected any lattice anomalies in the vicinity of the transition temperature. Na-based osmium oxide pyrochlore was synthesized for the first time by an ion-exchange method. KOs2O6 was used as a host compound. Elelectron probe micro-analysis, synchrotron x-ray diffraction analysis, and thermo-gravimetric analysis confirmed its structure not as the beta-type but as the defect-type pyrochlore. The composition was identified as Na1.4Os2O6.H2O. Electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization measurements of the polycrystalline Na1.4Os2O6.H2O clarified absence of superconductivity above 2 K, being in contrast to what were found for the beta-pyrochlore AOs2O6 (A = Cs, Rb, K). Sommerfeld coefficient of 22 mJ K-2 mol-1 of Na1.4Os2O6.H2O was smallest among those of AOs2O6. The iron oxyarsenide TbFeAsO0.85 was synthesized by a high-pressure method. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was obtained and characterized by measurements of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. The electronic structure of Sr0.35CoO2, structurally analogous to the layered NaxCoO2, has been evaluated using the local spin density approximation (LSDA). We find that evident c-dispersions appear in both the e'g and a1g Co-derived bands, demonstrating the existence of a notable interplanar interaction in Sr0.35CoO2. The LSDA+U calculation reveals that the electronic structure, in particular the band splitting between the spin-up and spin-down electrons, changes evidently along with the increase of the effective on-site Coulomb interaction U. Analysis of theoretical and experimental electron energy-loss spectra (EELS) for the oxygen K-edge and the Co L23-edge suggests that the on-site interaction (U) in Sr0.35CoO2 is less than 3eV which is noticeably weaker than the estimated value (from 5eV to 8eV) in the NaxCoO2 materials., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Raman spectroscopy measurements have been performed on alpha-, beta-, gamma-NaxCoO2 phases differing in their stacking of CoO6 octahedra along the c-axis direction. The results demonstrate that, in general, there are five active phonons for gamma-Na0.75CoO2, two Raman active phonons for alpha-NaCoO2, and four Raman active phonons for beta-NaCoO2. We have also performed Raman scattering measurements on several gamma-(Ca,Sr)xCoO2 (0.15 <= x <= 0.35) samples which show well-defined intercalated Ca/Sr-ordering. The experimental data show that the intercalated cation ordering could result in visible alterations on Raman spectral structures. The observations of the spectral changes along with the variation of the CoO6 stacking, as well as the intercalated Sr/Ca ordering suggest that the interlayer interaction plays an important role for understanding the lattice dynamics in this layered system., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, Physical Review B, in press

Two series of alpha and beta-NaxCoO2 materials have been prepared by means of Na deintercalation from the parent alpha-NaCoO2 and beta-Na0.6CoO2 phases, respectively. The alpha-NaxCoO2 materials undergo a clear phase transition from the hexagonal to the beta-phase like monoclinic structure along with Na deintercalation. Measurements of resistivity and magnetization demonstrated the presence notable charge ordering transitions in both alpha and beta-NaxCoO2 with 0.4 < x < 0.5 below 100K. Bulk Superconductivity has been observed in the hydrated alpha-NaxCoO2.1.3H2O at ~4.5K and in beta-NaxCoO2.1.3H2O at \~4.3K. Intercalation of D2O in alpha and beta-Na0.33CoO2 also yields superconductivity at slightly lower temperatures. It is worthy to note that, despite of the structural difference, the alpha-, beta- and gamma-NaxCoO2 .yH2O materials show up notable commonalities in their essential physical properties, e.g. superconductivity and charge ordering transitions., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

A series of CaxCoO2 (0.15 <= x <= 0.40) materials have been prepared by means of ion exchange reaction from NaxCoO2. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements revealed a rich variety of structural phenomena resulting from cation ordering, structural distortion and twinning. Systematical structural analysis, in combination with the experimental data of NaxCoO2 (0.15 <= x <= 0.8) and SrxCoO2 (1.5 <= x <= 0.4) systems, suggests that there are two common well-defined cation ordered states corresponding respectively to the orthorhombic superstructure at around x = 1/2 and the 31/2a31/2a superstructure at around x = 1/3 in this kind of system. Multiple ordered states, phase separation, and incommensurate structural modulations commonly appear in the materials with 0.33 < x < 0.5. The TEM observations also reveals an additional periodic structural distortion with q2 = a* / 2 in materials for x <= 0.35.
