Understanding the interplay between charge, nematic, and structural ordering tendencies in cuprate superconductors is critical to unraveling their complex phase diagram. Using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray scattering on the (0 0 1) Bragg peak at the Cu $L_3$ and O $K$ resonances, we investigate non-equilibrium dynamics of $Q_a = Q_b = 0$ nematic order and its association with both charge density wave (CDW) order and lattice dynamics in La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. The orbital selectivity of the resonant x-ray scattering cross-section allows nematicity dynamics associated with the planar O 2$p$ and Cu 3$d$ states to be distinguished from the response of anisotropic lattice distortions. A direct time-domain comparison of CDW translational-symmetry breaking and nematic rotational-symmetry breaking reveals that these broken symmetries remain closely linked in the photoexcited state, consistent with the stability of CDW topological defects in the investigated pump fluence regime., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

We use femtosecond resonant soft x-ray scattering to measure the ultrafast optical melting of charge-order correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. By analyzing both the energy-resolved and energy-integrated order parameter dynamics, we find evidence of a short-lived nonequilibrium state, whose features are compatible with a sliding charge density wave coherently set in motion by the pump. This transient state exhibits shifts in both the quasielastic line energy and its wave vector, as expected from a classical Doppler effect. The wave vector change is indeed found to directly follow the pump propagation direction. These results demonstrate the existence of sliding charge order behavior in an unconventional charge density wave system and underscore the power of ultrafast optical excitation as a tool to coherently manipulate electronic condensates., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 39 references

Phase transitions driven by ultrashort laser pulses have attracted interest both for understanding the fundamental physics of phase transitions and for potential new data storage or device applications. In many cases these transitions involve transient states that are different from those seen in equilibrium. To understand the microscopic properties of these states, it is useful to develop elementally selective probing techniques that operate in the time domain. Here we show fs-time-resolved measurements of V Ledge Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) from the insulating phase of the Mott- Hubbard material V2O3 after ultrafast laser excitation. The probed orbital excitations within the d-shell of the V ion show a sub-ps time response, which evolve at later times to a state that appears electronically indistinguishable from the high-temperature metallic state. Charge order is universal among high-T$_c$ cuprates but its relevance to superconductivity is not established. It is widely believed that, while static order competes with superconductivity, dynamic order may be favorable and even contribute to Cooper pairing. We use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering to study the collective dynamics of the charge order in the prototypical cuprate, La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$. We find that, at energy scales $0.4$ meV $ \lesssim \omega \lesssim 2$ meV, the excitations are overdamped and propagate via Brownian-like diffusion. At energy scales below 0.4 meV the charge order exhibits dynamic critical scaling, displaying universal behavior arising from propagation of topological defects. The ability to probe symmetry breaking transitions on their natural time scales is one of the key challenges in nonequilibrium physics. Stripe ordering represents an intriguing type of broken symmetry, where complex interactions result in atomic-scale lines of charge and spin density. Although phonon anomalies and periodic distortions attest the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the formation of stripe phases, a direct time-domain view of vibrational symmetry breaking is lacking. We report experiments that track the transient multi-THz response of the model stripe compound La$_{1.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$NiO$_{4}$, yielding novel insight into its electronic and structural dynamics following an ultrafast optical quench. We find that although electronic carriers are immediately delocalized, the crystal symmetry remains initially frozen - as witnessed by time-delayed suppression of zone-folded Ni-O bending modes acting as a fingerprint of lattice symmetry. Longitudinal and transverse vibrations react with different speeds, indicating a strong directionality and an important role of polar interactions. A major challenge in understanding the cuprate superconductors is to clarify the nature of the fundamental electronic correlations that lead to the pseudogap phenomenon. Here we use ultrashort light pulses to prepare a non-thermal distribution of excitations and capture novel properties that are hidden at equilibrium. Using a broadband (0.5-2 eV) probe we are able to track the dynamics of the dielectric function, unveiling an anomalous decrease of the scattering rate of the charge carriers in a pseudogap-like region of the temperature ($T$) and hole-doping ($p$) phase diagram. In this region, delimited by a well-defined $T^*_{neq}(p)$ line, the photo-excitation process triggers the evolution of antinodal excitations from gapped (localized) to delocalized quasi-particles characterized by a longer lifetime. The novel concept of photo-enhanced antinodal conductivity is naturally explained within the single-band Hubbard model, in which the short-range Coulomb repulsion leads to a k-space differentiation between "nodal" quasiparticles and antinodal excitations., Comment: accepted for publication on Nature Communications

In strongly correlated materials the electronic and optical properties are significantly affected by the coupling of fermionic quasiparticles to different degrees of freedom, such as lattice vibrations and bosonic excitations of electronic origin. Broadband ultrafast spectroscopy is emerging as the premier technique to unravel the subtle interplay between quasiparticles and electronic or phononic collective excitations, by their different characteristic timescales and spectral responses. By investigating the femtosecond dynamics of the optical properties of Y-Bi2212 crystals over the 0.5-2 eV energy range, we disentangle the electronic and phononic contributions to the generalized electron-boson Eliashberg function, showing that the spectral distribution of the electronic excitations, such as spin fluctuations and current loops, and the strength of their interaction with quasiparticles can account for the high critical temperature of the superconducting phase transition. Finally, we discuss how the use of this technique can be extended to the underdoped region of the phase diagram of cuprates, in which a pseudogap in the quasiparticle density of states opens. Unveiling the nature of the bosonic excitations that mediate the formation of Cooper pairs is a key issue for understanding unconventional superconductivity. A fundamen- tal step toward this goal would be to identify the relative weight of the electronic and phononic contributions to the overall frequency (\Omega) dependent bosonic function, \Pi(\Omega). We perform optical spectroscopy on Bi2212 crystals with simultaneous time- and frequency-resolution; this technique allows us to disentangle the electronic and phononic contributions by their different temporal evolution. The strength of the interaction ({\lambda}~1.1) with the electronic excitations and their spectral distribution fully account for the high critical temperature of the superconducting phase transition., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

In strongly-correlated systems the electronic properties at the Fermi energy (EF) are intertwined with those at high energy scales. One of the pivotal challenges in the field of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) is to understand whether and how the high energy scale physics associated with Mott-like excitations (|E-E$_{F}$|>1 eV) is involved in the condensate formation. Here we show the interplay between the many-body high-energy CuO2 excitations at 1.5 and 2 eV and the onset of HTSC. This is revealed by a novel optical pump supercontinuum-probe technique, which provides access to the dynamics of the dielectric function in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{0.92}$Y$_{0.08}$Cu$_2$O$_{8+{\delta}}$ over an extended energy range, after the photoinduced suppression of the superconducting pairing. These results unveil an unconventional mechanism at the base of HTSC both below and above the optimal hole concentration required to attain the maximum critical temperature (T$_c$)., Comment: Text and Supplementary Information

Photoinduced phase transitions from insulating to metallic states, accompanied by structural re-arrangements, have been recently reported in complex transition-metal oxides. However, the optical control of a purely electronic phase transition, where the thermodynamic phase is determined by the distribution of excitations, has remained elusive. Here we report optical control of the electronic phase in an underdoped Bi2212 crystal through impulsive photoinjection of quasiparticles (QP) via ultrashort laser pulses, avoiding significant laser heating. An abrupt transition of the transient optical electronic response is observed at a critical fluence of Ipump=70 uJ/cm^2.
